An ancient town that rose to become the seat of political and religious power, this beautiful city calls to the soul searcher in explorers. We draw a spiritual roadmap of the city for you. Words Chanchal Ramesh & Shrabasti Anindita Mallik
Located on the banks of the Shipra river, the city of Ujjain is both quirky and curious. It has some of the most well-known temples, hosts a Kumbh Mela, has the most amazing jalebis and bhutte ka kees (a dish made from grated corn) - all of which make it worth exploring every inch of the place. Temple tales The majestic shikhar of the Mahakaleshwar Mahadeo temple dominates the skyline of Ujjain. One look at it and it stirs a deep sense of reverence within. This temple is among the 12 jyotirlingas of Shiva spread across the country. It is the only temple among the 12 in which the idol is dakshin mookhi, facing the South. The temple consists of five levels and the lowest level is underground. The courtyard is dotted with many other temples, and it has a beautiful lake! Devotees shout out the name of Lord Bholenath (Shiva), and some chant as they move around, adding to the vibrancy of this place!
27
Outside the temple, there are bhang (Indian cannabis) vendors. A bhang thandai tastes very nice and is a unique drink to have here, especially as bhang is used as an offering to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple.
Did you know? Enclosing one of the 12 jyotirlingas, or representations of Lord Shiva, the Mahakal or Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the highlights of Ujjain. The daily Bhasm Aarti that commences from 4 am in the garbagriha (inner sanctum) is a ritual that draws devotees and tourists from all walks of life.

If architecture fascinates you, then the popular Chaubis khamba temple is a must-visit. It has 24 pillars, as the name suggests. The temple dates back to the ninth century, and it is dedicated to Badi Mata and Chotti Mata. The entrance is guarded by the deities, Mahamaya and Mahalaya in a graceful form. Inscriptions about these are found on the footsteps of the temple. Take a refreshing break to have a sabudana kichadi, one of the specialities of Ujjain, and then a visit to the rock-cut 11th-century Chintamani Ganesh Temple on the tranquil banks of the Shipra river. The Ganesha here is known as Chintaharan, which means remover of all anxiety.
While moving through the town with its profound aura of spirituality one can’t help but whisper a prayer for peace and well-being. Banking on faith Ujjain has many ancient temples on the banks of the river and in the other parts of the town. POSITIVE SIGNS Symbols are evocative. Symbols are powerful. Symbols are feelings. Just a single glance at them tells us what they convey. In the aftermath of the havoc created by the Covid-19 pandemic, people of the world are trying to draw strength from each other. Different cultures use different symbols to represent hope. We explore 11 such symbols from across the globe. 30
November-December 2021
In these challenging times, the symbols of hope serve as a positive reminder that times will soon change for the better
THE DOVE (Christians) The dove has been associated with love and peace in many different cultures around the world. In ancient Mesopotamia, doves were a prominent symbol of Inanna-Ishtar, the goddess of love, sexuality, and war. The symbol of a dove with an olive branch has been used as a symbol of peace since the early times of Christianity. It has its origins in the Biblical story about Noah’s dove after the great deluge. In this story, Noah sent a white dove to see if there was any land around after the Great Flood. The dove returned with an olive branch in its beak, signifying that there was land somewhere around. This was a moment of relief since Noah had spent a long time on the ark. Since then, a dove with an olive branch in its beak has been considered a symbol of peace.
31
OLIVE BRANCH (Greco-Romans) The olive branch is an accepted symbol of hope and peace. In ancient Greece, an olive branch, the hiketeria, was held while praying. There is an interesting tale about Poseidon and Athena who had a face-off to own the city of Athens. To stake his claim, Poseidon thrust his spear into the Acropolis and opened a well through which seawater gushed out. In return, Athena planted the first olive tree near that well. The gods and goddesses decided that Athena’s gift to the land was better than Poseidon’s and she should be given Athens. According to the Romans, the Roman god of war Mars has another side – Mars Pacifier, who brings peace and was shown on some of the coins with an olive branch in his hand.
WHITE POPPY (Commonwealth Realms) The white poppy as well as the red one are frequently worn during Remembrance Day and other war memorial events in the Commonwealth Realms. The origin can be traced to the 1930s in the UK when there was a widespread fear of a potential war with Europe. They were distributed as an alternative to the red poppy, as a pledge to peace that war must not happen again. Today, white poppies are worn to remember the victims of wars, with the added meaning of hoping for the end of all conflicts.
32
November-December 2021
PEACE SIGN (Worldwide) This widely recognised symbol of peace emerged in Britain in the late 1950s in response to the nuclear programme in the country. It was later adopted in the US by the activists who were opposing the war in Vietnam. Over years, the sign has become a generic symbol to represent peace, and is used by various human rights groups and in contexts much wider than war and nuclear disarmament.
PAX CULTURA (Broken World) The Pax Cultura symbol consists of a white background and three dots enclosed in a circle in amaranth colour. It was created by the Russian artist, cultural activist and philosopher Nicholas Roerich. The artist described the circle as representing the totality of culture, with the three dots being Art, Science, and Religion that embrace human cultural activity. He also described the circle as representing the eternity of time, encompassing the past, present, and future. This emblem has also since been used on peace banners.
BROKEN RIFLE (Worldwide) The broken rifle is a symbol used by War Resisters' International (WRI) and its affiliates. The symbol predates the foundation of WRI in 1921. The first known example of the symbol is in the masthead of the January 1909 issue of De Wapens Neder (Down with Weapons), the monthly paper of the International Antimilitarist Union in the Netherlands. From then on, the image started appearing in many anti-war publications across Europe. Ernst Friedrich, a German who had refused military service, founded the Anti-Kriegs Museum in Berlin, which featured a bas-relief broken rifle over the door. The symbol came to be recognized as it is today, and its use remains widespread.

According to a Japanese legend, anyone who manages to fold a thousand Orizuru (origami cranes) can have one of his/her wishes fulfilled. It is for this reason that Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was struggling with leukemia in the aftermath of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, was trying to do so. She was hoping to fold a thousand cranes so that her wish for surviving through the disease would be granted. However, she succumbed to the illness after folding 644 cranes. Her friends and family folded the rest of the cranes and buried them with her. This story had a powerful impact and the paper crane started being associated with anti-nuclear movements.
MPATAPO (West Africa) Mpatapo is the adinkra symbol of peace. It is considered to be a symbol of reconciliation and peacemaking. Mpatapo represents peace after strife. It is an adinkra symbol that features quite often in Akan art and architecture. It is represented by a knot that has no beginning and no ending and depicts the bond between disputing parties that have reached a peaceful reconciliation. It extends to become a symbol of forgiveness.

YIN AND YANG (China) Yin and Yang is a popular symbol from China. It represents the concept of dualism where two seemingly opposing and contradictory forces actually are interrelated and complementary to each other. The symbol contains white and black in equal parts, showing us that there is no light without darkness. To find harmony, both the forces should be in balance. If one becomes overpowering, then that balance is lost and as a result, there will be negative outcomes.
BI NKA BI (West Africa)
The Yin Yang is also a symbol of balance, contentment and inner peace.
Bi Nka Bi is an adinkra symbol that roughly translates to “Nobody should bite another.” It is a symbol of justice and fairplay and is used to express peace and harmony. It is depicted by the image of two fishes biting each other's tails. This urges caution against provocation and strife and indicates that the outcome of dispute is often harmful in some form or the other to both the parties involved.

Down the history lane St. George's Syro Malabar Forane Church, locally known as Edapally Church is a Catholic pilgrimage church in Edapally, Kochi, India. Thought to have been founded in 593 AD, it is regarded as one of the oldest churches in Kerala. About five million people visit it every year.
Among locals, Wat Wichit Sangkaram is known as Wat Kuan. It is a beautiful edifice worth visiting. Bright colours along with traditional architecture that is still impressive make this place a draw for tourists. Wat Wichit Sangkaram is a perfect example of history and traditions, culture and beliefs. Many religious ceremonies are held here, so you may have the opportunity to see one!
The foodie tales If you're in Kochi, Sri Muruga Café should be on your list. This 15-yearold spot brings together two of Kerala’s greatest loves – pazhampori and beef fry to create a dish that is as delicious as it is unusual. They serve a portion of meat cooked in a thick gravy, topped with onions.

Shoppers' delight The Marine Drive by the backwaters is a shopaholic’s delight! The GCD complex and Bay Pride have an assortment of stores that sell imported electronics, perfumes and clothing. The Flea Market here has a great collection of casual clothing at affordable prices.
Also famous as the Naka Market, Phuket weekend market place is perfect for shopping in Phuket if you do not wish to splurge. It is located along the Chao Fa West Road near the Central Festival Mall and houses a wide array of second copies of mostly every item it sells. And even if you’re out of cash this Phuket market is still worth a visit.
For the night-angels If you are looking for an experience that will leave your spirits high then, Sky Grill Lounge is the place to be. The lounge offers a great food menu and drinks to booze the night away. What makes it special is the fact that it is one of the best rooftop bars offering scenic views of the backwaters.
The coastal location of Phuket has made it an ideal place for sunset bars, with the cliff areas dotted with numerous ones. Of all these, the Wassa Homemade bar at the Patong Bar is the most popular one. Wassa is the ultimate sundowner venue and one of the best options of the night-angels in Phuket.
For adventure junkies Water sports in Kochi takes a rather softer turn with this knee boarding experience. Learn to row as you sit on your knees along with a professional instructor for a total of 45 minutes. This water sport is usually done at high speeds and large waves to give full excitement and dizzy thrills.
Kitesurfing is one of the most daring and challenging water sports in Phuket especially during rains and strong winds. Glide on the blue water on a soft board with a large steerable kite attached to it and ride the waves. While it is amongst the most thrilling ones to be experienced, make sure to kitesurf only with a certified trainer.
Recommendation: Fort Cochin is the place to go looking for some colourful murals. The Thai Amulets Market in Phuket Old Town is the place to buy Buddhist amulets, most of which are blessed by well-regarded monks in Thailand.

WORLD SOIL DAY DECEMBER 5, 2021
KEEP SOIL ALIVE, PROTECT SOIL BIODIVERSITY As many know, around 70 per cent of the earth’s surface is covered with water, while the remaining 30 per cent comprises land. The layer of the earth that is composed of soil and is influenced by the process of soil formation is called the pedosphere. But what exactly is soil and what is soil made of? Read to know more. Words Neel Sen
46
November-December 2021
Soil can be simply defined as a mixture of small rock particles/debris and organic materials/humus, which develop on the earth's surface and support growth of plants. Soil is formed by weathering of rocks. It is composed of different components: 5 percent organic matter, 45 percent minerals, 20-30 percent different gases and 20-30 percent water. Therefore, the soil is known as a heterogeneous body. Plants nurture a whole world of creatures in the soil, which in return feed and protect the plants. This diverse community of living organisms keeps the soil healthy and fertile. This vast world constitutes soil biodiversity and determines the main biogeochemical processes that make life possible. In order to stress the importance of environmental and soil protection, the United Nations celebrates this indispensable natural resource every year with World Soil Day, on December 05.
47
Importance of healthy soil Soil is the basis of food systems as well as the place where all plants for food production grow. Healthy soil provides essential nutrients, water, oxygen and support to the roots, and all these elements favour the growth and development of plants for food production. Another important aspect is that when soil is healthy, it contributes to mitigating climate change by keeping or increasing soil organic carbon. Useful mineral medicines such as calcium, iron, and other substances such as petroleum jelly for cosmetics are extracted from soil. Soil absorbs rainwater. This water is evaporated and released into the air during sunny days, making the atmosphere cooler. Soil Pollution Soil pollution can be broadly classified into two categories: Naturally caused soil pollution Anthropogenic soil pollution (caused by human activity) Almost all cases of soil pollution are anthropogenic in nature. A variety of human activities can lead to the contamination of soil. They are as follows:
48
November-December 2021
Demolition of old buildings contaminating nearby soil with asbestos Usage of lead-based paint during construction activities Spillage of petrol and diesel during transportation Activities associated with metal casting factories (foundries) Underground mining activities Improper disposal of highly toxic industrial/chemical waste can severely polluting soil Use of chemical pesticides in agriculture Sewage produced in urbanised areas Nuclear waste, e-waste, and coal ash Soil pollution harbours a broad spectrum of negative consequences that affect plants, animals, humans, and the ecosystem as a whole. Soil conservation Soil conservation focuses on keeping soil healthy through a combination of practices and techniques. It is the act of preventing soil from being eroded and from losing its fertility because of things like over-usage, acidification, salinisation, or contamination by man-made chemicals. Many crucial changes must be brought about in order to control soil contamination and soil pollution. For example, the use of toxic substances in industrial activities can be avoided wherever suitable alternatives exist. Also, the recycling of waste products will contribute towards a reduction in the soil contamination due to landfills. Promoting healthy agricultural practices such as the use of organic manure and organic farming methods can help reduce the amount of chemical fertilisers used in agricultural soils. Efficient and limited use of chemical pesticides must also be advocated.
