Banaras: Of Gods, Humans and Stories Written by Nilosree and Irfan Published by Niyogi Books Hardback 240 pages INR 1750

34

September-October 2021

Varanasi A LIVING LANDSCAPE There is a river and there is a city, constructed over centuries. This is Banaras, a city imagined, real and fluid, written about so many times, and yet invigorating and complex enough to probe again.

35

As per the primary narrative, Banaras or Kashi is the city that Lord Shiva created, while he was creating the universe itself; it is his chosen abode on earth. From the sacred texts to the maps of all scales, travel diaries, and pre-colonial and colonial paintings and photographs, Banaras emerges to be a place of many colours and hues, deeply immersed in a particular way of life. Ganga, the sacred river River Ganga is an archetype, a river and beyond. For the believer it is an endless source of sacred water, a purifier, a bountiful mother, an epitome of energy, and also Shakti, the saviour in liquid form. In Kashi Khanda of Skanda Puran, river Ganga as

36

September-October 2021

a goddess is declared as one of the three final givers of blessings, the other two being the Lord Shiva and Kashi, the abode itself. Just as Kashi is the archetype of tirtha...so is the Ganges, the archetype of sacred waters. The ghats of Ganga denote a visual identity of the city. As the river nearly encircles the city, its mere presence heightens the austerity of the location. Standing on the Chausatti ghat on one end or Panchganga ghat on the other, one gets to witness the flowing river that's almost like an ocean, forming its widest sweep. There is no denial of the visual supremacy of the Ganges flowing by Banaras, with the city standing on the riverfront.

Every art, every handcrafted object made in Banaras has a connect or a symbolic reference to what the city is associated to.

The materialistic world of Banaras With Banaras there is both an undeniable spiritual and materialistic connect. It would be engaging to look into the world of handicrafts, Banarasi weaving in particular, wooden toys, minakari and metal craft as well as a peek into the world of musical instruments. Every art, every handcrafted object made in Banaras has a connect or a symbolic reference to what the city is associated to. For example, the bell metal objects and brasswares directly link up to the ritualistic practices or a Banarasi silk that is deeply connected to the local socio-cultural events, like marriages and offerings. For the love of Banaras Banaras is a lifetime of experience, delving into its innermost social fabric. The city has had a sanction to the custom of pleasure. In both realms of popular culture and traditional custom, music and food are deeply intertwined and Banaras is not an exception. Banarasi Paan is existential in nature. It is a life choice, freewheeling, and more about the informed social behaviour. Understanding Banaras is as layered as Banaras itself. It is about the Divine and those who help retain the essence of divinity. It is about life and death and everything in between. A complex entity with a carefully crafted antiquity that runs deep into its veins.

A Letter box makes you nostalgic, bringing back memories of an era of pen and paper, stamps, ink and warmth. With improved means of communication such as Internet, SMS, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms, the importance of letters and letter boxes has dimished. Let us have a quick look of some unique post offices across India. 49

General Post Office, Kolkata

50

September-October 2021

The history of postal services in India dates back to the 18th century when the then Governor General Warren Hastings first introduced the postal service for the public in March 1774 in Kolkata. In 1854, the country became the first one in Asia to issue postage stamps from its post office in Sindh (now in Pakistan). It was the era of half anna stamps, the Indian Post Office Act, and mail deliveries through railway and seaways. Unique Post Offices Currently managing more than one lakh post offices in the country, India Post has become the world’s largest postal network. Established at different points in time, India is home to some of the oldest and unique post offices in the world. Highest: At 15,500 ft in Hikkim district in Himachal Pradesh, the highest post office of India was established in 1983. Nestled near famous travel destinations, Kaza and Spiti, the post office is an instagram-worthy place, attracting hundreds of travellers every year who take pride in getting their picture clicked while sending out letters from the highest Daak Ghar in the country. Oldest: India’s first-ever post office was launched in Kolkata in 1774 by Warren Hastings. On October 2, 1868, the city got its own General Post Office (GPO) which was constructed in four years. The building is adorned with a high white domed roof, 220 feet tall Ionic-Corinthian pillars, with an in-house museum that celebrates a rich collection of old artefacts and stamps.

Did you know? PB No. 9 (Postbox Number 9) has a rare significance in the history of postal services in India. It is the oldest postbox number still active in Kerala and has completed a century now.

Roadside wall boxes first appeared in 1857 as a cheaper alternative to pillar boxes, especially in rural districts.

A post box originally installed in the wall of the Wakefield Post Office is dated 1809 and believed to be the oldest example in Britain. It is now on display at the new Wakefield Museum.

The first post boxes are believed to have been installed in and around Paris in1653. By 1829, post boxes were in use throughout France.

Grandest: The Mumbai GPO established in 1794 by the then Postmaster General, Mr. Charles Elphinstone. Designed in Indo-Saracenic style, it took nine years to build the post office that houses two-spacious floors, a business hall with 101 counter positions, and a central hall that rises to a large dome. Floating: The Dal Lake in Kashmir is home to an intricately designed post office which is known as the floating post office. Constructed on a handmade houseboat, the post office provides regular postal and banking services to around 50,000 residents on the lake. A seal of a man rowing a shikara on the Dal Lake is used on every letter posted from the post office.

WORLD RHINO DAY SEPTEMBER 22, 2021

64

September-October 2021

INTO THE

WILD

Today, only five sub species of the rhino survive in the world. The Greater One-horned Rhino or simply the Indian Rhinoceros is scientifically identified as Rhinoceros unicornis (Linnaeus, 1758) and is found only in the Indian subcontinent. Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, Indian rhinos are possibly the most prehistoric ones.

The Indian rhinoceros helps maintain the health and balance of the ecosystem. Known by the scientific name of Rhinoceros unicornis, these animals are mega-herbivores, part of a small and disappearing group that weigh over 1,000 kilograms and include the elephant and the hippopotamus. These large herbivores are shapers of their landscape and environment. They actively use the wetlands and waterbodies helping towards the natural rejuvenation of the aquatic systems. The Indian rhinoceros is also known to help in seed dispersion, moving large tree seeds from forested areas to grasslands through excreta.

Unlike the critically endangered black rhinos, greater one-horned rhinos are counted in the vulnerable category. Their skin is like a thick armour plate which reminds of dinosaurs. But, it’s the one horn that makes them distinctive and special from other rhino species. At present, these beautiful species can only be found in two places; Kaziranga National Park in Assam, India and Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Threat The Indian rhinos thrive in the grasslands, and changes in these habitats is posing as an inevitable threat. Loss in grassland

65

Did you know?

Habitat degradation caused by human activities and climate change as well as the resulting increase in the floods has limited their ranging areas.

Nearly 85% of the global Indian rhinoceros population is concentrated in Assam, where Kaziranga National Park contains 70% of rhino population. Rhinoceros are excellent swimmers and can run at speeds of up to 55 km/h (34 mph) for short periods. They have excellent senses of hearing and smell, but relatively poor eyesight. It is the only large mammal species in Asia to be down-listed from endangered to vulnerable in the IUCN Red list in 2008.

66

quality mainly due to growth of invasive and natural succession in addition to changes in the water regimes are the main components posing a threat to the habitats of the rhinos. Habitat degradation caused by human activities and climate change as well as the resulting increase in the floods has caused large death of rhinos and has limited their ranging areas which is shrinking. Asian rhinos mainly survive in isolated areas – in small populations that are at greater risk from inbreeding, natural disasters and disease. By the 1900s, only between 100 and 200 rhinos survived in the wild. From there to its current population of approximately 3,500 the world over is a remarkable

September-October 2021

turnaround. A lot of effort was put in by the Governments both in India and Nepal to conserve the species. In India, led by Assam, efforts were put in to revive the population of the species within its declared rhino Protected Areas. Hope In today’s world where a number of wildlife species are on their brink of extinction, we have given ourselves a chance to make sure to not make the Indian rhino species going into the category of endangered again. So, let’s take a pledge to even contribute a small amount of our effort towards this great cause. Just make sure do not let the beautiful greater one-horned rhino species to say bye to this world so soon.

Corporate Social Responsibility - IndiGoReach

Reviving India’s glorious Heritage IndiGoReach, the CSR arm of InterGlobe Aviation ‘IndiGo’ is proud to partner with Aga Khan Foundation and Archaeological Survey of India to restore and preserve the 16th century Mausoleum of Abdur Rahim Khan-I-Khanan in Nizamuddin, New Delhi. Rahim, one of the nine gems (Navratnas) of Mughal Emperor Akbar, built this mausoleum for his wife. He was a beloved poet whose couplets continue to be taught as Rahim Ke Dohe. Since the 19th century, this magnificent monument had been stripped off much of

its beauty and was almost on the verge of collapse. Conservation works here have required work by master craftsmen to restore missing stone and reveal buried decorative patterns. IndiGoReach will continue to support the upkeep and maintenance of the mausoleum and the breathtaking illumination of this prominently located monument. IndiGoReach continues to work on preserving, promoting and developing India's heritage sites.
