August 19 World Photography Day 2020
Celebrate the beauty in every Frame Since the early 19th century, photography has become an ever-increasing medium of personal expression and appreciation for countless people around the world. The World Photography Day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the world. It is an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography.
The current pandemic has changed the way we look at the world. It has impacted many industries around the world, amongst which aviation has been one of the sectors that has been hit the hardest. Despite opening of the domestic air space, IndiGo is flying only a small percentage of its full fleet.

Dastangoi
The art of Storytelling
Dastangoi is a 13th century oral storytelling art form which was extremely popular during 16-19th century. Twentieth century witnessed the death of this interesting art form due to shrinking audience. Some skilled storytellers and researchers are tirelessly working towards to revive the ancient art form. Read more...
The tradition of Dastangoi can be traced back to the times of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. It later spread to Faizabad, Rampur and Lucknow. In Urdu literature, dastangoi has been set down in writing as a cycle of lengthy tales, called dastans (combining popular fantasies and literary tropes to produce highly readable and entertaining stories). An eminent Urdu Critic Shamsur Rahman Farqui of Allahabad has stated that a dastan is a narrative that is credited for listening, irrespective of whether it is spontaneous or has been composed thoughtfully. In contrast to a novel, the oral storyteller can interact with his audience. The world of dastan is not related to our world but is a realm where there is enchantment, magic and wizardry. WHAT IS A DASTAN? A dastan is an extraordinary creative effort in which attempts are made to reach great heights with the use of language and narration. It is a reflection of life, albeit in an exaggerated and amplified form. The dastan came into existence for recital and hearing. It was primarily performed. In a dastan, the performer is the middleman between the creator of the dastan and the audience.
Dastan narratives do not describe events as they have occurred, rather they remodel the incidents afresh. The geographical features described in a dastan are quite unconventional, unusual and sometimes quite puzzling. The story can start from two places or two countries at the same time and the locales keep changing as the story progresses. The narrator is free to change or add locales and they are not confined to any known map or design.
components. The element of enchantment and magic is given more importance in the Lucknow dastans. All things present in the fantastic world and all affair that may happen are powerful, strong and highhanded, exceedingly splendid This attitude underlines the fiction of oral narration and exceptionally beautiful or ugly. The profusion of incidents in the narratives is a prominent quality of the dastan. Every recitation brings in changes, no matter how small. If nothing else alters, the body language of the narrator – his gestures, eye movements and pauses – keep changing. The inception and resolution of characters in dastan are seldom dramatic, striking or vivid. The brave, the pious and the truthful meet success and evil characters face collapse and downfall. This is the grand design of dastan.
One of the characteristics of the oral dastan is that there is always a profusion of lists of attributes, peculiarities and traits. These have no direct relevance to the story but they add dignity and grandeur to it. ELEMENTS OF A DASTAN The four constituents of the dastan are battle and combat, assembly and entertainment, and craftiness and knavery. The entire story is woven around these

Homar's Illiad and Valmiki's Ramayana were conceived by tellers and singers of tales. The Urdu dastans are a precious heritage and a gem among them is the Dastan-i Amir Hamza, which was composed in 46 volumes. Dastangoi was revived by Mahmood Farooqui in 2005. Since then, he has performed thousands of shows across the world.
THE ARTISTES The narrator of a dastan is called dastango. The dastango derives his inspiration from different streams, uses his genius to remould, creates plots and plots within plots. A good memory was an essential quality of a storyteller, but far more important was his inventiveness, innovation and the resourcefulness of his imagination. The dastango keeps telling the listener what is going to occur and nothing is held back. It is a mark of the consummate skill of the narrator that he is able to present anticipatable incidents in interesting ways.
of reciting dastans has received a fillip with the increasing awareness that Indian performing arts which have sunk into oblivion need to be reorganised, appreciated and revived.
Dastangoi is as much a living tradition convention as any other performing art. Although new dastans are not being written in Urdu, the corpus of classical Urdu literature has thousands of pages of memorable and dramatic pieces full of graphic and intense imagery. And today, the audience comprises a large percentage of non-Urdu speakers, entranced by the dramatic and colourful renditions of the reciters.
In India and also in the Islamic world, there is a strong tradition of remembering texts by rote. There is a custom of memorising works such as the Ramayana, Bhagwad Gita and the Ram Charit Manas, while the Muslims have an established practice of memorising Qur'an. In a similar vein, the dastango kept in mind the bare outline or skeleton of the tale and while reciting it before its audience, he would embellish and clothe the account, using his masterly ingenuity. THE DECLINE AND REVIVAL With the end of the era of nobility, the popularity of the dastan waned. Rise of new avenues of entertainment, such as novels, the theatre and cinema further led to a decline of the dastan. In recent past, the tradition

The foodie tales Goan seafood is praised world over. Do try the famous fish thali in one of its shaks or restaurants. The thali comes with a portion of rice, chapatis, fish curry, a vegetable dish, fried fish and pickle.

Khao Gaeng, or 'cover rice with a topping', is a popular street food in Pattaya. The best part of this dish is that it is always ready to be served. It is served with stir-fried curried rice and vegetables or meat stacked on top.

Interesting lanes
While Goa will entice you with its beaches, bars and street markets, it's important that you take some time out to explore the streets of Goa. Walk around the streets and these larger than life caricatures, murals and other street arts will give you a distinctive feel of the place.
The Walking Street of Pattaya is quite unlike anything else in Thailand. Located at the end of Pattaya’s Beach Road, the road comes alive at night with neon lights, thumping music from different genres, food vendors and street performances.
Shoppers' delight There are few markets in Goa that offer traditional Goan experience, however, the best among them is the Mapusa Market. Here you can buy everything Goan – antiques, pottery, handicrafts, dried and fresh fish, spices, homemade pickles, etc. Don't forget to bargain.
The Pattaya Floating Market consists of four sections, each selling items from the four major parts of Thailand. Eateries, fruit stalls, souvenir shops and some art galleries, everything is available here that a traveller can expect in a market.
For adventure junkies A popular water sport, parasailing in Goa lets you experience the bird’s view of this beautiful tropical land. And the best place that offers the same is Calangute Beach in North Goa. Don't miss the Majestic Fort Aguada while you parasail from here.
Being surround by sea, Pattaya offers a variety of sea adventures. Go cruising around Koh Rin, Koh Khram and Monkey Island and enjoy sunbathing on a desert island, swimming and snorkelling and feeding the friendly macaques, and the fresh sea breeze.
Recommendation: Exploring the beauty of Goa on a bike is an exciting thought. There are various bikes available on hire. In Pattaya, there are over 30 golfing facilities, from simple driving ranges to 18-hole courses.

MANI BHAVAN
Mumbai FACT FILE Gandhi's association with the charkha began in 1917, while he was staying at Mani Bhavan. Martin Luther King Jr. had visited Mani Bhavan in the 1950s and in November 2010, the then US President Barack Obama visited the Gandhi Sangrahalaya.

Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi spent about 17 years (1917-1934) in Mumbai’s Mani Bhavan, a modest two-storied building on the Laburnum Road. A place that became his Bombay headquarters, it belonged to Shri Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, an old friend of Gandhiji. It was from this place that Gandhiji initiated movements like Satyagraha against Rowlatt Act and propagated the causes of Swadeshi, Khadi and HinduMuslim Unity. The building was converted into a museum in 1955. Today, you'll find there various photographs depicting the life of Gandhiji. The second floor still houses the room where Gandhiji used to stay.
A complex of museums inside the sprawling Red Fort in Old Delhi is among the most striking landmarks in the national capital. Inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Mondi on January 2019, the complex houses the Subhas Chandra Bose Museum, the Yaad-e-Jallian Museum, the Museum on 1857 – India's first war on Independence and Drishyakala Museum. While the museums are placed right next to the other, each of them has a unique story to tell. The Subhash Chandra Bose Museum is dedicated to the great leader famous for his slogan Tum Mujhe Khoon Do, Main Tumhe Azadi Dunga (Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom) and the Indian National Army. On display are various artefacts related to Netaji and INA. From INA badges to Netaji's cap and chair, the museum is a book on Netaji's life. The Yaad-e-Jallian Museum is dedicated to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Museum on 1857 – India's first war on Independence showcases the sacrifices made by Indians during the 1857 war. Drishyakala Museum houses artworks from 16th century till India's Independence.

Set up in 1978 by Shri Babubhai Jasbhai Patel, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum in Ahmedabad showcases artefacts and the belongings of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The museum also includes two multimedia halls that shed light on various aspects of his life and work with interactive and experiential exhibits. CELLULAR JAIL AND MUSEUM
Port Blair A must on every traveller's list of places to visit in Andaman, the Cellular Jail in Port Blair reminds us of the days when Indian prisoners, mostly freedom fighters, were detained, tortured and kept in solitary confinements. The cells, a large section of which is still intact, are a stark reminder of what the prisoners had to go through. One block here holds a library on the Indian freedom movement, photo galleries, an art gallery and a Netaji gallery. It also organises a sound and light show in the evening which provides an evocative commentary on the jail and freedom struggle of the nation.
FACT FILE Many notable freedom fighters, including Batukeshwar Dutt, Yogendra Shukla, Sachindra Nath Sanyal, Sohan Singh, and others were imprisoned here.

WATER SUSTAINABILITY Across the globe, increased demand and water mismanagement have put a lot of stress on water resources. As a result, it becomes essential to look at sustainable solutions to have access to clean water. Words Neel Sen
52
August 2020
Water is a natural asset. Limited in supply but fundamental to life on earth. Only 3% of planet's water is freshwater, the rest is frozen in glaciers or hidden too deep underground. With an increase in population and their income levels, the demand for water and water-intensive products such as manufactured goods, meat, and dairy products has risen globally putting stress on the global freshwater resources. Using water in a sustainable manner means easy accessibility of water. Sustainability also means being resilient and adaptable to global warming and extreme weathers that may contribute to issues such as flooding and scarcity. There are many things that can be done to improve water sustainability. Green Solutions One of the main causes of water waste in cities is often poor infrastructure. Shifting to green infrastructure projects is necessary to enhance the biodiversity and ecological resilience. Also, managing rainwater issues as an alternative to traditional methods of piped drainage is the need of the day. Green infrastructure also provides valuable green space and less pollution for the residents of a city.
Rainwater harvesting can be easily practiced in larger urban facilities including sports arenas and official & recreational complexes.
Rainwater Management When it rains, the water that runs off our roofs can be collected, wherever possible, for future reuse. Rainwater harvesting can be easily practiced in larger urban facilities including sports arenas and official & recreational complexes. In many cities, it is worthwhile to collect this water instead of letting it drain. For example, Singapore is currently committing to infrastructure that is designed to capture every drop of rain that falls. Los Angeles is capturing stormwater and using it to recharge drinking water aquifers and the city of Melbourne is piloting a project to capture rainwater from roofs and store it in tanks to be used for toilet flushing and lawn watering.

Did you know?
Glaciers are noted as a vital water source due to their contribution to stream flow. Rising global temperatures have noticeable effects on the rate at which glaciers melt, causing glaciers in general to shrink worldwide. More than one in every six people in the world (around 1.1 billion people) do not have sufficient access to potable water. The world's most water stressed region is the Middle East. Water stress is ever intensifying in regions such as China, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Women-led collectives in villages:
A step towards economic independence IndiGo Shakti is our CSR initiative on women empowerment. It aims at increasing the income generation opportunities for women through onfarm and off-farm initiatives in a few states of rural India. As a part of these interventions, rural women are trained to undertake activities that help them move towards economic independence. Under one such initiative, which we have started in the North-Eastern state of Tripura, we have reached out to 3,000 rural women and are working towards increasing their incomes in their villages. Women
farmers, identified from West Tripura district, are being collectivised into producer’s organisations. They are then trained and engaged in livelihood activities for enhanced production and income. Started in partnership with an organisation named SESTA, this program focuses on the usage of innovative technology in farming, livestock management, orchard development, community awareness, and other interventions that contributes to the economic growth of these valiant women in the villages of India.
