CHRISTMAS CHEER Neighbourhoods filled with melodious sounds of carol singing, the sweet aroma of cakes and cookies emanating from bakeries, decked up churches and markets filled with Christmas trees, Santa figurines and poinsettia flowers are just some things that announce Christmas is here. One of the most awaited and loved winter festivals, Christmas brings along with it a lot of cheer and hope and also encourages us to experience the joy of giving. While there are many ways to soak in the Yuletide spirit in India, why not plan a Christmas outing to make the festival all the more merrier? So go ahead and indulge in Goa's Portuguese-influenced Christmas meals or tag along with locals at Puducherry's French-style celebrations or shop at Kolkata's well-stocked Christmas markets to experience a different Christmas this year.
31
GOA No place in India is as magical on Christmas as Goa. With Roman Catholics forming a major chunk of the Goa population along with the Portuguese legacy, this beach state celebrates Christmas in the most traditional way. Keeping in tradition with the Portuguese style, Goans decorate their homes with nativity scenes depicting Mother Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The entire city is decorated with poinsettia flowers and lights. One can experience a slice of the local life by attending a midnight mass at one of the stunningly decorated historical churches or visiting one of Goa’s heritage cathedrals. Some famous ones include Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception and Church of St. Francis of Assisi.

To get a taste of the traditional Christmas meal, try the traditional Goan curry, Sorpatel, Chicken Carfeal and Bebinca, the quintessential Goan desert, at any of the restaurants or beach shacks. Also known for its party scene, Goa hosts all-night-long parties organised on the beaches like Anjuna, Mapusa and Candolim along with dance and music festivals.

PUDUCHERRY Christmas in this former French colony is as grand and authentic. A lot of French natives visiting the city during the festival turns it into a 'mini France'. No wonder that Puducherry is a preferred Christmas destination in India. One is spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing which place to head to for the midnight Christmas mass with the city being home to lovely churches that have eye-catching Roman and Gothic architecture and stunning Christmas decorations. This is an activity we suggest one must do for the unique experience it provides. Locals in Puducherry celebrate Christmas with full gusto following all the traditions and rituals, and are quite enthusiastic about doing up their Christmas decorations. Ample time is spent in decorating the Christmas tree, put up peppy lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, flower plants, and holly. The beauty of Puducherry touches your core and celebrating Christmas here is a great choice as apart from enjoying the festivities, one can simply put up his feet and relax at one of the many wonderful beaches. Sri Aurobindo Ashram is another place that attracts followers from all over the world during Christmas.
33
KOLKATA The city of Kolkata has a very enigmatic relationship with Christmas. During the festival, the perfect weather of Kolkata plays a role in setting the mood right for the celebrations.
New Market is the place to shop for Christmas trees and Santa Claus figurines of any size. 34
December 2020
The famous Park Street, usually where all the action takes place, is decked up in Christmas colours with murals showcasing Christmas fables days before the actual festival. The various bakeries lined on the outskirts of the market, which struggle to keep up with the overflowing number of fruit cake orders they receive in Christmas, make some wonderfully delicious cakes. By Christmas eve, people are out there on the streets to celebrate the famed Yuletide spirit by wearing Santa caps.

Kaza Pass, located in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh, provides a perfect sneakpeek into the tribal culture of the Spiti Valley in the Lahaul region. The valley boasts of being a cosy summer home for the local shepherds who throng the grasslands in search for lush pastures and warmer temperatures. Also known as a popular trekking destination for adventure enthusiasts, Hampta Pass is surrounded by the Pir Panjal range, and a little ahead by the more pristine and quiet Chandratal Lake. When visiting here, you

get an opportunity to cross frozen glaciers, voluptuous rivers and trysting landscapes, each of which provides for an exquisite panorama in itself. Ideal Trek Itinerary The trek to Hampta Pass starts from Manali and it takes 5-6 days for the same. Mostly referred to as a beginner’s trek, the first pitstop for the hike is in Jobra village, a picturesque drive from Manali. Meandering through serpentine routes amidst the

mountain ranges, one cannot stop exclaiming at the adrenaline-filled ride through apple orchards, maples, and deodars. The first rest point is near Chika, a quaint campsite beside a moderately silent water body. The second day onwards the trek is full of testing trails and challenging gorges. As you walk over them you can gaze at the pure white snow below, lying in peace; untainted and flawless in its own glory. Balu ka Ghera, which is one of the most intriguing campsites of the second day, gives you the first view of the Herculean Hampta Pass. On the Lahaul side of the valley, Shea Goru is another magnificent spot, full of majestic backdrops and spectacular perspectives. Standing in the centre here, one can undoubtedly witness the permanence of the peak towering all around him, flaunting its mighty enormity and fortitude at its best. Furthermore, from here, one can trek to Chandratal Lake, which is a lake in the Spiti part of the Lahaul and Spiti region and one of the most awaited tour-de-divergences,
39
Best months to visit Hampta Pass is an extremely high altitude trek, about 4270 metres on a range in the Himalayas. Though one can visit this place for six months in a year, the best months to visit can be between June to October.
enroute Spiti. One can also choose to descend from the Lahaul side, plummeting from the ice-peaked mountains to gorgeous rocky trails by the Chandrabhaga river. The View from the Pass The Hampta Pass crossover is very different and unique because of the contrasting view of the dark green meadows behind and the barren brown mountainous topography in the front. It is a beautiful imagery of nature, one side caught up with flowers and pastures while the other side is lined with boulders and ledges. Staring at the polarities between both halves, it is difficult to ignore the strong similarities it strikes to the philosophical portrait of life; the stark differences between joys and sorrows & good and evil. Thus, setting the stage strong for all budding travel writers out there!
Things to experience The shepherds and the local farmers here have a great affinity for folklore and myths. Befriend some of them and spend an evening around the fire, listening to their tales of love and culture, dancing to the tunes of their foottapping numbers, while admiring the silence and reticence of the neighbouring mountains. Also, it is a great opportunity to indulge in their socio-cultural lifestyles for a day, enjoying the perks of living out in the raw wilderness with zero digital footprints and almost no urban interference. There are also various kinds of innovative artistry that can be discovered here, spend a day picking up a skill or two from these local talented entrepreneurs.
Love for food Along the way at certain crossroads you may come across some tiny tea shacks. Do not miss indulging in a piping hot plate of Maggi and some Kulhad wali chai while sitting on the edge of the valley, especially if your visit coincides with that of the sunset. Alternatively, the locals here are extremely hospitable and open their dining rooms to offer simple Himachali meals. Definitely a must try when in the village!

NOISE POLLUTION Noise has become an inescapable part of modern life. Traffic on the road, construction works, railway tracks, machines, people talking on their phones are just some of the noises. Even electrical appliances at home put out a constant beeping sound. Is it just a nuisance, or it has a negative physical and psychological impact on us? Know more about it... 52

around you-the wind, music, phone rings or a clock ticking. But when a sound distracts us, it becomes unwanted noise. Exposure to loud music at music concerts or, more commonly, from personal music devices such as iPods, MP3 players and headphones can cause excessive harm to your ears. These devices deliver very loud levels of sound directly into the ear canal. It may be music you want to listen to, but by turning it up loud you risk immediate or long-term hearing damage. Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise can cause a range of health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity losses in the workplace, communication difficulties and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss.
What actually is noise pollution? The World Health Organisation calls noise pollution “an underestimated threat” that can cause “sleep disturbance, cardiovascular effects, poorer work and school performance, hearing impairment.” In literal terms, an excessive amount of noise or an unpleasant sound that causes a temporary disruption in the natural balance is termed as noise pollution. The cumulative effects of noise pollution can affect our physical and mental health. Growing populations, urbanisation and modern technologies all contribute to increased noise pollution. SOUND VS NOISE There are a range of sounds in the world
IMPACT OF NOISE ON OUR ECOSYSTEM Plants life: Many plants and trees rely on birds and other animals to deliver pollen from one flower or tree to the other, or to disperse their seeds. With increased noise, many animals are changing their behavior and are moving to quieter locales. These disturbances cause cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. Marine Life: The rising level of intense underwater sound produced by oil and gas exploration, shipping traffic and other man-made sources has posed a significant long-term threat to whales, dolphins, fish and other marine species. Animal life: Various animal species are experiencing hearing loss and the reduction of usable habitat that noisy areas may cause, which in the case of endangered species may be part of the path to extinction.

Did you know?
What is sound? Sound is created when a vibrating or aerodynamic source causes waves of acoustic energy to travel through the air.
Did you know?
Sounds can be characterised by their frequency (or pitch) and intensity (or loudness).
DAY TO DAY TIPS TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
An adult with good hearing can hear frequencies in the range 20 to 15,000 Hz, while children may hear frequencies above 20,000 Hz.
We, as responsible citizens, can help create a more peaceful and pleasant urban environment by being considerate and respectful of our surroundings.
The sound pressure level is measured in decibels (dB).
SOLUTION The prevention of noise pollution depends on us. We, as individuals, can help create a more peaceful and pleasant urban environment by being considerate and respectful of our surroundings. We should remain aware of the sounds that we generate. • Try not to create noise or keep it to a minimum. • A simple mechanism to reduce noise pollution in our daily lives is just to close the windows. • To protect your hearing, experts

recommend that music devices should be used for no longer than one hour per day, at a volume level of 60 per cent. • Noise pollution can be reduced through regulation, improved building methods, better product design, noise barriers and better planning. • Planting 'noise buffers' composed of trees and shrubs can reduce noise by five to ten decibels. Above all, we need to recognise that noise pollution is a serious health concern, and should find realistic and sustainable ways to manage and reduce it.

‘The Lal Bagh Palace’
Reviving India’s Heritage One of the key pillars of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) intervention is to work on preserving, promoting, and developing India’s National Heritage Sites. As part of this, IndiGoReach-the CSR arm of IndiGo has joined hands with the World Monument Fund Association of India to carry out ‘Restoration of Historic Interiors of Lal Bagh Palace of Indore. The Lal Bagh Palace or the ‘Red Palace’ is one of India’s finest
neo-classical buildings built by the Holkar dynasty and is one of Madhya Pradesh’s most iconic 19th-century palaces. The project aims at carrying out restoration work of the interiors of the Palace. This will serve as a model for conservation and sustainable management of palaces and would increase the footfall of students, residents, and other tourists visiting Indore.
