Derived from Japanese words ori (to fold) and kami (paper), Origami is the art of paper folding to create intricate designs through folding and sculpting techniques. Closely associated with Japanese culture, origami also has roots in China and Europe. In Spain, the practice is called papiroflexia or pajarita. The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, displays ancient origami items of Edo Period (1603 – 1868) of Japan. On November 11, origami fanatics celebrate the birthday of Lillian Oppenheimer, the founder of the first origami group in America.

EUROPE Inside Guangzhou, China’s third largest city, lies Shamian Island. Unexpectedly European and quiet, it finds a place in every wedding photo in the province.

November 2019

Tall man-made waterfalls, ancient mosques and temples, beer museums and sky-scrapers aside, Guangzhou (erstwhile Canton) has its own piece of Europe a short distance away from its famous New Town. Quiet and carfree, this little island connected by bridges is full of former British and French buildings which, after a brief period – people watching. Also, interestingly, of disrepair, have now been restored you will be greeted by another to their glory. sight - that of wedding, modelling or catalogue photoshoots! Historic buildings abound The island is surrounded by the Pearl River on one side and a canal on the other, but despite this, it gives the feeling of being in another world. Walk around Shamian Island to explore the number of incredible structures - old embassy buildings, cathedrals and churches. Lady of Lourdes Chapel, a big French cathedral built in 1892, is particularly fascinating. There is also the British Protestant Church, Christ Church Shameen (built in 1865), which makes for an interesting sight. Curiously, there are plenty of bronze statues scattered around the island. They depict life in the area, past and present. For example, the statue of a small girl standing on tiptoe as she tries to reach the mailbox and another of a woman walking along with a violin with five children in tow are particularly captivating. The more recent attractions include the Victory Hotel, the must-see 'lobby' of the White Swan Hotel and a Starbucks disguised as a fine colonial building.

Historical past

In the earlier days, the island was connected to the mainland by two bridges, which were closed at 10 pm as a security measure. The bridges were guarded by Sikh and Vietnamese police officers. Over the years, trading companies from Europe, the USA and Japan built stone mansions along the waterfront, many of them can be seen even today. After 1949, many of the mansions became government offices or apartment houses, while churches were turned into factories. Today, only the government of Poland has an embassy on the island.

This artificially created island was divided between British and the French in 1859. It housed embassies and played an important role during the first and second opium wars. Before it became an island, it also served as an important trading port during the Song Dynasty.

eum Riyadh is a city steeped in history and culture, and the museums dotting the city offer fitting tributes to its rich heritage.

IndiGo to RIYADH. www.goindigo.in

Words Aftab Husain Kola

At the heart of Arabian Peninsula, Riyadh, capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has grown in leaps and bounds since the 80s. Defying the glitzy skyscrapers that have sprung up at many places, there are still places in this vibrant city where one can enjoy Saudi history. Riyadh’s tryst with its history and heritage through its renovated forts, museums and historic memorabilia is worth the efforts. Justifiably so, the UNESCO had endorsed Riyadh as the Arab Cultural Capital for the millennium year. If one talks of history and heritage, Riyadh’s Al-Masmak district, popular among tourists and residents, and home to Al-Masmak Fort, which is now a museum, is the first that comes to mind.

35

K A S M RT A FO M L HISTORY AHERITAGE&

Al-Masmak Fort Illustrating the story of the Kingdom, Al-Masmak Fort is home to a museum that has become an important historical destination and focal point for state guests as well as foreign visitors and local residents. 'Masmak' in Arabic translates to high, fortified, thick and massive—important qualities for a fort that witnessed King Abdul Aziz’s major initiatives in consolidating the Kingdom. The work on the fortress began in 1865. In 1902, it served as a warehouse for ammunition and weapons and was subsequently converted into a prison before being turned into a heritage landmark in the heart of Riyadh. It was inaugurated in 1995 as the Al-Masmak Historical Museum, which has a wide collection of sepia and new photographs, maps, models, display cabinets, old weapons, traditional and heritage objects.

BYGONE ERA ANTIQUES King Abdul Aziz Historical Center At the core of city's historical spots is a series of buildings interspersed with public spaces and gardens, home to King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives and Murabba Palace, which are prominent landmarks here. At its centre is the Kingdom's flagship museum, the National Museum of Riyadh, where one can feast on a captivating display of Saudi Arabia's culture in past and present forms. The museum showcases different types of antiques, manuscripts, documents and display boards of bygone era. Embracing an area of 17,000 sqm the museum's two-storey building covers 28,000 sqm. The depictions are well scattered over eight exhibition halls—Man and the Universe; Arab Kingdoms; Pre-Islamic Era; Hall of the Prophet’s Mission; Hall of Islam and the Arabian Peninsula; Hall of the First and Second Saudi State; Unification of the Kingdom Hall and Hall of Hajj and two Holy Mosques emphasising the importance of Mecca and Medina.

COLLECTABLES ARTEFACTS

Antiquities Museum Located in King Saud University – the oldest in Saudi Arabia – it highlights cultural and historical artefacts that have been discovered and collected through various excavations conducted by the university. The museum has two main halls: the first focuses on the Faw and Rabdha excavations that took place in Northern and Southern Saudi Arabia in the 1970s and includes artefacts that date back to Roman and Hellenic times, such as statues of Apollo. The second hall houses antiquities, including coins and statues, porcelain, pottery, jewellery, etc.

Saqer-Aljazirah Aviation Museum One of the prominent aerospace museums in the region, it displays an excellent collection of aircraft and memorabilia spanning the entire history of aviation in Saudi Arabia. The museum showcases a collection of model airplanes, collectables, pictures, historical documents and audiovisual installations that explore the country’s aerospace journey. It comprises sections on historical pictures, airbases, Westland Wapiti aircraft, the F-15 aircraft, Typhon, King Faisal Air Academy, space, etc. There is also a special section dedicated to the astronaut Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who was one of the astronauts on board the space shuttle Discovery as part of a NASA mission in 1985.

PORTUGUESE PIONEERS

The finest example of Indo-Dutch architectural fusion lies just outside Chinsurah town, on a field that slopes down from the Grand Trunk Road - the beautiful mausoleum of Susanna Anna Maria. A Dutch beauty of the early 18th century, Susanna is believed to have had seven husbands (though historical records vouch for only two) and also the inspiration behind Ruskin Bond’s famous novel Susanna’s Seven Husbands.

Further down river, the town of Chandannagar was established by the French at the end of the 17th century and led to the town becoming famous for its quaint neighbourhoods, teeming with Gallic pubs. That legacy is still evidenced by the Chandannagore Strand, that runs alongside the Ganga. This beautiful boulevard is home to elegant pastel facades of French-era buildings. The erstwhile French Governor’s residence has now been converted to Institut de Chandernagore that houses a museum and an institute of French studies and a beautiful 19th century French villa now operates as the Chandannagar court. Just in front of the museum, stands the Patal Bari (The Underground House, so named because its lowest floor is submerged in the river), a stately mansion with beautiful wooden sunshades and decorative water outlets. An 18th century zamindar house, Patal Bari has a long file of distinguished visitors including Rabindranath Tagore. The Nobel Laureate poet visited this house often in his early years and mentioned its aesthetic architecture in his writings. Just off the Strand, the late 19th century Sacred Heart Church stands in stolid white splendour, a statue of St. Peter guarding its entrance. So it started like this. Young Bruce Wayne, who is eight to ten years old, and his parents, Thomas and Martha, are crossing an alley in Gotham City. A thug approaches them, asking for valuables. A squabble begins, and both his parents are shot dead. Bruce is traumatised to see his parents fall in front of him. He eventually becomes a vigilante crime fighter, with the ultimate goal to avert any form of injustice to the people of Gotham City. Since then, Batman is an enigma and this comic character has been captured on celluloid with brilliance as well. But what makes the story timeless enough to survive generations? What is it about this character hellbent on avenging the death of his parents night after night that has kept him at the forefront of our pop culture?

As the legend turned 80 this year, we take a look at why we still need Batman and will we be talking about Batman in another 80 years... Words Abhishek Chakraborty

PHENOMENAL CHARACTER Batman is only the second DC superhero to retain the majority of his basic features, the other being the Man of Steel. Since making his first appearance as a socialite turned crime-fighter, Bruce Wayne in Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939, the Dark Knight has stood as a symbol of determination, bravery and justice to fans for 80 years. "At the point when Bill Finger and Bob Kane put down the thought for 1939's Detective Comics #27, they didn’t know they were making a timeless hero who would captivate readers and movie audiences for decades to come,” says Cartoon Network Enterprises. The Case of the Chemical Syndicate proved to be a stellar success and ended up being a smash hit in no time. Two things make for a good hero: recognisable physical traits and the narrative arc of their story—their mythology. And Batman had both the characteristics. “Since a good hero is expected to have experiences of heroism and pain, Batman has always fit the bill with ease. His profound sadness coupled with heartfelt experiences of loss make him a relatable character till date,” adds Cartoon Network Enterprises. The authors of Batman has spent most part of a decade showcasing Batman as a symbol of hope for Gotham citizens. They put him through the ringer, re-opened old wounds and once even killed the hero off at one point just so that he can pick himself up again and

keep fighting. So does this mean that Batman, the character, is solely driven by tragedy? What are the reasons for Batman's immense popularity?

“His honesty and his desire to serve the citizens of Gotham make him a likeable character. Above all, he is adaptable and easy-going that appeals to the youth till date, says Cartoon Network Enterprises, adding, “His demeanour is modern and rational and his use of equipment, like technical gadgets and high-tech cars, appeal to people of this generation. His use of logic and ability to empathise and sympathise enables him to work out the nitty-gritty. He is a superhero without superpowers.”

RELEVANCE People across generations admire the durability of the character through the different eras of comics, from the Golden Age, to the sillier '50s and '60s stories of the Comics Code era, to the current age. But the one thing that has changed with time is the iconography of Batman.

SUPER VILLAIN Among Batman’s greatest super-villains, Joker finds his name at the top! The Joker is the perfect nemesis and Batman counters him with the perfect use of sarcasm and wit. At the same time, Batman has the ability to fight all odds and he has often used his inherent intelligence to perfection. In Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) Batman returns on a horseback to save Gotham with a reformed army of former gang members. He is able to save Gotham from an electromagnetic impulse with exemplar and grace like true superhero.

HIS ALLIES Batman’s heartwarming kindness and spontaneity is visible for everyone to see when he shares a touching Thanksgiving Dinner with none other than Solomon Grundy. Even more astonishing is his tryst with Catwoman. He not only forgives her but also almost marries her in Batman Hush and Batman 50 enabling us to understand that he is a superhero with a heart of gold.

“I must confess that I always yearned to become an actor because I wanted to travel the world. And it was my love for travel that made me move out from a nondescript village in Bihar to Patna, Delhi and then Mumbai. Or I can say that one passion of mine fuelled another, and here I am. I love to see new places, taste new flavours, learn new cultures, meet new people, and enrich my life with all these small joys that come along.

Thankfully, my job allows me to be footloose and fancy-free, and I couldn't ask for more. In all these years, I have had the pleasure of seeing all the places across the globe that I secretly wished to visit one day. Benjamin Disraeli famously said that like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen. I couldn't agree more with him. At times, I travel for business and in between my hectic

NowBoarding work schedule, I try and steal a few days to travel for pleasure too. And those moments are enough to keep me on my toes till I get another opportunity to sneak out and enjoy. I got a taste of the English summer, and its beautiful countryside this year as a significant portion of my film, 83, was shot in the United Kingdom. It was an unforgettable experience. My family – wife Mridula and daughter Aashi - shares my passion for exploring new places, and that I would say is a great advantage.

The English getaway sounds like an exotic vacay, but trust me, I enjoy visiting far-off, and unseen cities, towns and even villages across India as well. The experience brings forth something that I can never discover otherwise. I get to know how other people live, eat and cook. So I earnestly look forward to heading to some faraway place to gather knowledge from people I stumble upon during my journey and stay. That remains a significant takeaway for me. But some places remain my all-time favourite like Leh and Ladakh, villages in and around Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner in Rajasthan, villages of Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala. It has been long since I visited Jaisalmer Fort, popularly known as Sonar Quila, or wandered aimlessly in Kuldhara village in Jaisalmer, or enjoyed a taste of rural life in Sam village, also in Jaisalmer. Other offbeat destinations in Himachal Pradesh that remain memorable for an awesome vacay are Tirthan Valley in the Kullu district where Tirthan river meanders along, and Jibhi, a scenic, unpretentious and old Himalayan village in the Banjar Valley. I choose to visit them over and over again because they they provide solace to my soul, and leave me refreshed and rejuvenated to carry on with the humdrum affairs of my life with greater vigour. LOVE FOR FOOD The other best part of travelling remains food. Once when we were on our way to

Jodhpur from Jaisalmer, I spotted a hut that doubled up as a makeshift roadside eatery catering to the rural populace. I asked the driver to stop the car. He was reluctant though saying we might not like the traditional Rajasthani food served there. I somehow had my way and went inside. The old woman manning the Dhaba said that she had bajre ki roti and Kair Sangri for us, but if we could wait, she would prepare mirchi ki sabji too. Well, I was already salivating at the mere mention of these delicacies. The woman quickly went to her farm, plucked some green chillies, cooked the yummiest chilly curry that I have ever had in my life, dipped hot bajre ki rotis in ghee and served a meal in no time. It was way above our humble expectations, and perhaps the taste still lingers on in my mouth as I recall the food. Such is the power of food that it conjures memories, often good ones that flash before your eyes as you think about what your mother cooked for you or anything that you once relished. For me, it is of the food cooked by my Ma, served with dollops

Food corner In Mumbai, I am always on the lookout for the vegetables that we get in our part of world — nenua (sponge gourd), arbi (colocasia), ole (yam), etc. These are the rare ones to find as there are few takers for them. My all-time comfort food remains litti-chokha, sattu ka paratha, makai-sattu (corn-roasted gram) powder, and chawalteesi (rice and roasted flaxseed powder).

of love and care, and the satiated look on my face and one of satisfaction on Ma's after I polished my plate. I fondly remember the grinding of raw spices — cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilly — on sil-batta back at home that lent food its distinct taste, especially coriander leaf chutney. Long before entering the house, one could smell it. Such was the aroma. I still prefer to go the traditional way creatively. Similarly in acting, if one and not much in favour of readymade overdoes it or leaves it undone by even spices or those ground in mixers for one per cent, then it shows. Like when cooking. While travelling, I often prefer we buy okra, we prepare a mental map local food, be it in India or abroad. Vajrasana, the throne in the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya placed by Emperor Ashoka, is said to be the last thing to be destroyed on Earth, when the world ends.

The Navel of the Buddhist World marks the journey of the enlightenment of the historical Buddha. Along the River Niranjana (Falgu) – Gaya is a footprint. While the Hindus believe that it belongs to Lord Vishnu - the protector where they perform ancestral rites; the Buddhist believe it is the place where Buddha entered Bodh Gaya to initiate his meditative journey to enlightenment. The 7th century Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang mentions that there was a stupa at this location. Next, the main Bodh Gaya Mahabodhi temple complex encloses the sacred Bodhi tree where the Buddha is said to have touched the earth, garnered his energies and proceeded to be enlightened. The highlight of the travel is standing beneath the knowledge tree, where a stone seat (called the diamond seat) represents the navel (centre of the universe). The rectangular Mahabodhi Temple stands east to the tree and layers of narratives abound its history. Images of the Bodhi Tree and the Mahabodhi Temple are seminal representation in the iconography of the Buddhist Art.

Varanasi, situated along the Ganges, developed as an important riverine commercial city. The flow of money inevitably propelled the development of intricate layering of cultural and spiritual impulses and patronage. Lord Buddha was offered a sublime space outside the city called Sarnath where he delivered his first sermon – and the wheel of Buddhist learning turned. Three centuries later, the great Emperor Ashoka built the Dhamek Stupa at the same place to mark the great event. Here the traveller walks the footprints and encounters energies of several monks, scholars who in the past and present walk this territory of monastic learning and meditation. Varanasi and surrounding regions like Sarnath are a testimony of human settlements for centuries. A part of the expressions is a large number of archaeological findings and artifacts. Some masterpieces are found at the Sarnath Museum. The journey is exciting when an Ashokan pillar brings alive the Indian State Symbol of four lions inspired by the life of Lord Buddha. However, the masterpiece is the 5th century Gupta period Buddha. Made of sandstone, the visitor, on entering the long hall, needs to walk with a focus on the lighted face of the teaching Buddha. As one approaches, the Buddha’s statue, its smile, half-opened eyes shower blissful energy. The historical Buddha did not come to Myanmar, but the tale goes that two merchant brothers hearing of a famine in the West travelled to India with a boatload of rice. They met Buddha who presented them with his eight head hair, now preserved as relics in the Naung Daw Gyi Stupa in the pagoda. The pagoda is the national monument and is a world within a world. Savvy escalators, shops and a spread of a variety of shrines transport the pilgrims and visitors to another universe. An array of artwork, precious stones, sounds, smells and movement of worshippers capture the imagination. There are intriguing ritual places like the planetary shrines, associated with directions and weekdays; along with alters for magic and donations.

Taapsee Pannu

sar

is a tour de force in tinseltown. That this jatti is actually a sherni is evident from not just her choice of roles, but also from the way she lives life. As she says in her own words, 'dil khole ke!' (with an open heart). Small wonder that Taapsee Pannu, a Sikh from Delhi 'leaves pieces of her heart behind in Amritsar' whenever she comes back from the city. One of her Instagram posts read, “Dear Ambarsar, Leaving the mannout of my Manmarziyaan with you....take care of it... Love Rumi #ScheduleWrap #AlmostDone #Manmarziyaan #Special” Speaking about her connect with the City of the Pool of Nectar (Amrit: elixir; Sar {short for sarovar/lake}), Taapsee says, "You know I have a debt in Amritsar. For several reasons, my film Running Shaadi was delayed for release and I had a deep desire to visit the holy place of Golden Temple as a wish to have the film see a release. The moment I learnt of the release, I quickly arranged to go to Amritsar to fulfil my wish. And it is not just spirituality or the peace of Amritsar that strikes a chord with Taapsee. The well-read actor says, "Amritsar is significant in the social, political, historical and cultural fabric of India. The largest city in Punjab, it is known for its inhabitants' generosity and joie de vivre. It is also known for the seamless way in which historic landmarks rub shoulders with imposing colonial buildings and gleaming shopping malls." Taapsee, who has shot for several films in the city says, "There are several things to do in this city that was once a significant stop on the Grand Trunk Road Its narrow lanes bustle with life with devotees, travellers, shoppers and food-lovers. Amritsar is a destination that encapsulate eat, pray, love and a lot more." Here is Taapsee's definitive guide to experience the city in the month that celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak…

Experience History…

Start with Spirituality

Amritsar

"The biggest draw of Amritsar is the spectacular Golden Temple! And the best way to experience the aura of the Golden Temple is to not just see it, but partake in the nectar of spirituality and devotion. You must eat at the langar - you can even volunteer in the process!"

86

Shop Till You Drop! "Juttis! Juttis!!! And more juttis!! My recommendation is the Raunak Punjabi Jutti Store at Hall Gate. And also phulkaris! If you really have pigged out, some churan is not an indulgence, it is a necessity! Buy the ajwain-flavoured churan from right outside Harmandir Sahib. I have standing instructions from my mom to not come back from Amritsar without picking up the Amritsari papad, wadiyan and pickles! The best are available at Manjith Mandi." November 2019

Taapsee Pannu plays the role of a 60-yearold dadi in the movie Saand Ki Aankh, released in the last week of October 2019. Live the Foodie Life! "Resisting the local delicacies is a challenge. During my shoots, we visited all famous outlets and thanks to the wonderful people here we have had an opportunity

"It is better to connect with the history of a place by reliving the sites that matter. I love strolling on the Heritage Street, from the historic Town Hall to the Golden Temple - it is a rather nice attempt at recreating the grandeur of what Amritsar was. This one-kilometre stretch feels like a walk through an open museum. Jallianwala Bagh is a must for visitors. I always get goosebumps as soon as I pass through its gates. The 'theatre of war' that takes place every evening at the nearby Wagah Border between India and Pakistan is another experience that shouldn't be missed!"

to have good homemade food, too, when we got tired of eating out. This city truly doesn’t make you miss home. One must try the kundewali lassi - the brass container in which it is served is a foot tall - at the Ahuja Lassi stall, near Durgiana Temple. One bite of the aloo kulcha at Bhrawan Da Dhaba will send you straight to gastronomic heaven. Kanha Sweets on Lawrence Road is the best place to have breakfast of Channa Bhatura.”

The Exhilerating Tabla One of the most complicated yet rhythmic musical instruments to come from India, the tabla has six main gharanas, namely, Delhi, Lucknow, Ajrada, Farukhabad, Benaras and Punjab, the former being the gharana that the great maestro Ustaad Zakir Hussain belongs to.

No trip to Mumbai is complete without giving a try to the famous Bhel-puri. Shop No. 11 at the Chowpatty beach is known for its own variation of the famous snack. For non-vegetarian snacks, BadeMiyan behind Taj hotel in Colaba is the best choice.

IndiGo to Bangkok and Mumbai. www.goindigo.in

Enjoy the ride Right in the heart of Bangkok is Siam Paragon which houses Siam Ocean World, an aquatic wonderland and home to over 30,000 sea creatures. A perfect place to go with family. People who have a thing for adventure can take a dive and swim with the sharks.

Spread over 6,000sqft, Mumbai’s first Children’s Museum opened its gates this year. A museum by children and for children, it hosts special exhibitions and film screenings, apart from storytelling sessions, poetry clubs, panel discussions, and dance & theatre performances at the amphitheatre.

For the night-angels Famous for its nightlife, Mumbai is the city of dreams. A good place to come face to face with movie stars is Prithvi Café at Prithvi Theatre. It always has a good play or two on. Get yourself a cup of tea and catch a glimpse of your favourite Bollywood stars who might give a visit too.

For those who enjoy a ride late in the evening, go-kart is a perfect option. EasyKart Bangkok is the biggest indoor go-kart track in Asia. It is open till midnight and even offers some great food and drink options at its in-house restaurant.

A visual treat Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre is the best place to experience contemporary art, design, music, theatre and film in the city. With over 4,000 sqm of exhibition space, the centre also houses shops, an art library and a couple of cafes serving coffee and snacks.

Home to the Bollywood industry, the city's walls exhibit the love for movies, their posters and iconic characters. A few notable among them are the graffiti of Amitabh Bachchan (from Deewar movie) and Madhubala in Bandra.

Recommendation: Rot Fai Night Market, Bangkok, sells antique furniture, hippie fashion and discontinued toys. Bhaucha Dhakka is the biggest fish market in Mumbai, selling over 2000 metric tons of seafood per day. Grab your catch now!

Green Intentions

STOP OC There is no concrete method to determine the amount of plastic trash in the ocean, but there are estimates that some 244,000 metric tons might be there on the surface, and another 8.5 million metric tons may sink to the sea floor every year. If that trash stays at oceans, it could wind up in a trash hot spot.

POLL

CEAN

LUTION

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) is the largest of the five offshore plastic accumulation zones in the world’s oceans. It is located halfway between Hawaii and California. As per estimation, about 1.15 to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic enters the Pacific Ocean each year from rivers, out of which more than half is less dense than the water and will not sink once it encounters the sea. Due to this the more buoyant and stronger plastics get transported to the ocean by the currents and accumulated in the patch. Once these plastics enter the gyre, they remain there until they degrade into smaller micro-plastics due to the sun, waves and marine life. These microplastics are often mistaken for food by marine animals, which in turn disrupts the entire ecosystem. As of now, the GPGP covers an estimated surface area of 1.6 million sqkm. The Ocean Cleanup, a non-government environmental organisation, is determined to eliminate this danger through its 'one ocean at a time' initiative.

THE SYSTEM Resulting from several research missions, travelling across and above the GPGP, The Ocean Cleanup team compiled an unprecedented amount of data to understand the plastic that persists in this region. The system that has been set up consists of a long floater and a skirt. The floater drifts on the surface of the water and skirt hangs beneath it. The floater

Some of the factors that have been primarily been taken into account while building up this system:

PROTECTING MARINE LIFE The main driving force behind this initiative is to protect the natural environment. Hence, making sure that sea life has been safeguarded is the key element behind this technology. provides buoyancy and the skirt prevents During a period of 116 days, a team debris from escaping underneath and of scientists and experts conducted leads it into the retention system. In order extensive monitoring and observation to prevent the skirt from over-topping and campaigns to find out if the system had stay afloat at the same time, there is a cork any possible environmental impact and line above it. A sea anchor slows down the to further minimise any potential harm to system in order to maintain a difference marine life. with the speed of the plastics, so that they can be retained and captured. Due to the size of the garbage patch, a passive design was decided since active ones would require too much usage of energy. This cleanup system works on the ocean's natural forces instead, like the wind, currents and waves. The electronics used, like the lights and AIS, are all powered by solar energy. While the system has been put to work for only the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, once it has been deployed into every other garbage accumulation zone, along with reduction of usage of plastics at the source, The Ocean Cleanup projects would be able to remove the ocean plastic by 90 per cent by 2040.

WITHSTANDING OCEAN STORMS

One major factor that had to be taken into consideration while building this system was its ability to withstand the forces of the ocean like storms, since the systems will be staying in the patch for a long period of time. Thus, the system has been designed to be flexible enough to follow the waves, and because the system is free-floating, it can drift when subjected to high current speeds.

REDUCTION AT SOURCE

In order to achieve removal of 90 per cent of ocean plastic by 2040, reduction of plastic usage at the source is necessary. Reduced usage of plastic and recycling on land, will lead to lesser plastic disposal into the rivers and seas. Which, in turn, will drastically reduce the size of these garbage patches. The Ocean Cleanup initiative is not only a way to protect and conserve the marine ecosystem, but the ecosystem of the whole planet.

For a better tomorrow This October, the nation came together to celebrate Daan Utsav or The Joy of Giving Week between October 2 to 8, 2019. Our employees, across all airport locations, participated enthusiastically to reach out to people from all walks of life.

They joyfully participated in blood donation camps, spent time with children in schools and orphanages and visited few animal shelters too! In an effort to contribute towards the environment, our employees planted tree saplings and

conducted cleanliness drives in public spaces. And last but not the least, when they purchased eco-friendly products, they were thrilled to know that the proceeds went towards the conservation of the environment.
