In the charming little coastal city of Melaka, south of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the past does not languish in crumbling monuments but is out there – in the narrow little alleys, temples, mosques and forts‌ An intangible aura of mystery clings to Melaka and its origins are as romantic as its present. The city was founded by a Sumatran prince, Parameshwara, in the 15th century and thanks to its strategic location on the Malacca Straits, the pretty little town became the most important port in Southeast Asia. Chinese merchants arrived in the early 1400s, followed by Indian traders of Tamil origin (responsible for Chetty culture). Soon, colonial European powers began to eye the prosperous little port and the Portuguese arrived in search of spices. Then came the Dutch who controlled Melaka for over 300 years and the British took over in 1824. After a few twists and turns in its history, Melaka was integrated with Malaysia on August 31, 1957.

A melting pot of cultures Today, Melaka remains a crucible of Malay culture. Its delightful melange of Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and Islamic architecture has been largely preserved and peopled by the wraiths of the past who seem to strut around as though participating in a stage play. With its abundance of cultures and cuisines, Melaka is one of Malaysia’s most fascinating melting pots…and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has a glitzy 21st century facet, too – of thrusting high rises, luxury hotels and the 110m tall Taming Sari Revolving Tower which affords a panoramic view. The past lurks just round the corner in Melaka - whether it’s the clean 17th century lines of Stadthuys, once the official residence of Dutch governors and now a museum; the ruins of a noble Portuguese fortress; the sixteenth century St Paul’s Church where the remains of St Francis Xavier were enshrined before being shipped to Goa or any of the remnants of a forgotten past like the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia and Dato Shamsuddin Mosque, the oldest in a country in which Islam is the predominant
religion. Stop by the impressive Sultanate Palace, a wood replica of Sultan Mansur Shah’s 15th century palace, and the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum.
Alluring lanes Amble down Jonker Walk, a mosaic of alleys lined with shops spilling with antiques and curios that put a price on an abandoned past. The shops are interspersed with linen-less eateries, a redpillared Chinese prayer hall, a Chinese Medical Therapy Centre, and a Baba Nonya house with intricately carved windows. The secret alleys of the city beckon the visitor and the ideal way is to trundle along in gaily bedecked trishaws reminiscent of preening Las Vegas show girls. The owners will relate tales of love lost and regained of a time when the city brimmed with untold wealth. Another

delve into oft told legend is about St Francis Xavier. On one occasion, during the course of his missionary work, his fragile boat tossed and pitched on a stormy sea like a horse at a rodeo. He dipped his crucifix in the ocean to calm it but lost it in the heaving waves. St Francis prayed intently for the return of the crucifix and the next day, a crab lumbered ashore with the crucifix on his crusty back. “To this day, we can see this species of crab with a cross on its back, he says, his eyes aglow with faith.
Flavourful travel It is over dinner at a Nonya restaurant (Nonya cuisine enjoys nation-wide popularity) where the fare is a mix of Chinese, Malay and a dash of Indian spices that one realises how seamless is the melding of cultures in Melaka. and a wedding bed set the tone for a meal that snares the taste buds and the senses. Their calamari fritters and sambal prawns make for some hefty delectable bites of living history. Indeed, the choice is vast in terms of Nonya restaurants in Melaka, depending on whether you want a classy one in a luxury hotel or where locals slurp their laksa (a spicy noodle soup spiked with chicken, fish and prawn) and relish the flavour. Melaka has more to offer – an atmospheric Chinatown with traditional shop houses whose faded exteriors are an engaging contrast in a country whose cities are shiny and have a newly minted air. Some have been converted into boutiques and cafes, and at night, an atmospheric night market and bars amp up the fun in this city of colonial grandeur.

Handmade, historic & contemporary While haggling over an intricately carved piece of blue pottery in Istanbul's colourful Grand Bazaar, do take out some time to visit the tiny village of Avanos which is the centre of Turkey's pottery business today. Words Sudipto De
Nestled on the banks of Turkey's longest river Kizilirmalk (also known as the Red river), Avanos' status as a pottery stronghold is ably assisted by the presence of red clay along with white clay procured from the three volcanoes: Erciyes, Hasan and Melendiz. These volcanoes have also helped shape the landscape of Cappadocia today, creating the mushroom hills and fairy chimneys that tourists from all over the world flock to see. The landscape, created by millenia of erosion is dotted with caves where paintings from the pre-Christian era still exist. Although the evenings are a photographer’s delight as the last rays of the sun illuminate the landscape, it is the mornings when the city truly comes alive as scores of hot air balloons launch across the valley.

Head to the Kapadokya Seramik, a two-storey workshop located about an hour's drive away from Cappadocia's Kayseri Erkilet Airport where owner Umut Atlandla, whose family has been in this business for over two centuries, welcomes you in. After serving a refreshing cup of thick black Turkish coffee, he launches into a theatrical demonstration of how important pottery was in the era of the Hittites. As it was one of the main professions and economies, young men were supposed to have learnt the art of pottery before asking for any of the ladies hand for marriage. Courtship used to take place over a specially made cup for keeping candies. Umut's younger nephew Emin, it seems, won't have much problem impressing the ladies as he sits over the good old potter's wheel and kick starts it, using his skillful hands to shape the wet clay into a jug. If interested, you can also get on the wheel and try out some pottery. The next part of the process involves the baking of these pottery items before they are embellished with specific designs that denote ancient traditions. There are horses (Cappadocia being known as the land of horses) imprinted on the goblets and chalices, ceramics for by women with natural colours, including family use having the motifs of 'Tree Copper compounds for black, Iron for the of Life' and exquisite teacups adorned reds and browns, Copper for the blues and with pomegranates (traditional signs greens. of fertility in ancient Turkey). Most of this intricate paintwork is done The shop has shelves upon shelves filled with brightly coloured ceramics. But the highest selling item in Umut's underground treasure trove is the 4000-year-old Hittitian Sun wine decanter and these have quite a bit of history attached with them. The Hittite Empire, established around the 17th century BC in Anatolia (present-day Cappadocia), was instrumental in promoting wine across Turkey and making it a profitable industry, even establishing proper laws around its production and sale.
Iznik pottery, the traditional blue pottery, is a type of fritware made from combining quartz sand with ground glass.
As the Hittites worshipped the Sun God and considered wine to be a drink of the Gods, the decanter was shaped like the sun. The jug's shape also has a practical purpose. As most of those being served were kings and

members of the royalty, the ring is passed through the arm and rested on the shoulder before pouring the wine in a bent down position, as Umut demonstrates quite theatrically. Although they are traditionally done up in colours of black and gold with animal motifs and geometrical designs, today fritware made from combing quartz sand with they are made in an array of colours and ground glass. Clouds float over the soaring mountains dressed in dense subtropical foliage. Monsoon rains give birth to new cascades along the winding paths. Deep inside the thick jungle, root bridges connect the fragile banks of rainfed rivers. Nearby, men and women, dressed in colourful attire look for their daily catch of fish in glassy, turquoise blue waters. This is Meghalaya. Wei Saw Dong Falls The 20-minute climb downhill through the forests of Cherrapunji – or, Sohra, as locals call it – makes for an incredibly sublime trail along the semi-paved path to the waterfall. Nature unravels its music along the way, with the sounds of birds chirping, dancing leaves and the faint hiss of the waterfall ahead. The path divides into two. On the left, when the waterfall suddenly appears along the hike, looming over a guardian tree, travellers – standing on a muddy viewpoint – marvel at the spectacular beauty. Turquoise blue water gushes down moss-clad rocky outcrops, creating not one but three tires. Wei means ‘pool’ and saw dong loosely translates to ‘squareshaped’ in local Khasi language. Garbed with boulders, on the right, local villagers have built a 70-90 degree trail with bamboo stalks. It leads to the bottom pool, which marginally appears to be a square. Crystal clear, the blue-green base pool is quite inviting to the naked eye. However, bathing is not advised.
fact File Sohra is the second rainiest place on Earth.

Rainbow Falls When travellers began frequenting the jungles of Meghalaya, it was partly thanks to the Umshiang Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat. Hundreds of years ago, when bamboo bridges were fragile to heavy rains, villagers found a creative solution. Grown along the river banks, the roots of Ficus elastica – Indian rubber fig tree – were twisted, allowing them to grow and merge. Some years later, it created a sturdy bridge. In Nongriat, a parallel second deck was built as an answer to tackle the submerging first layer by the gushing rivers.
fact File When they are grown strong enough, a root bridge can carry the weight of about 50 people at a time.

Vehicles can come up to Tyrna, a locality near Sohra. From Tyrna, 3,500 steps descend to the root bridge. Climb uphill for another hour and a half through an earthy path paved with crippled stones. The roaring sound of the water finally appears as a pearl-white stripe which thunders down the rock to sparkle a warm blue base pool. On a good day, bright sun rays hug the shattered rock and reflect a beautiful rainbow, giving rise to its name – Rainbow Falls.
fact File Weinia Falls Out of the usual tourist trail, this murky cataract of water grabbles down the slippery rocks and step-like structures full of mossy grandeur. During monsoon, the falls come alive, almost ferocious, with a thundering sound and bubbles of water scattering outside to welcome the occasional visitor. Weinia Falls is one of the three falls in Nongkhnum Island. It sits on the northern side.

Day visitors can drive from Shillong, a three-hour drive along the highway, which passes through cloud-hugging mountains and villages nestled in the banks of the Kynshi River. The river bifurcates into the Phanliang River and the Namliang River, creating Nongkhnum Island, which is home to about 14 households. Here, cowboys run past herds of cattle and fishermen flock to the sandbanks to while away the wee hours in the morning. The perennial beauty of Weinia Falls last throughout the year. The autumnal sun appears after October where it creates a rainbow on both sides of the waterfall.
Nongkhnum is the second largest river island in Asia.

Phe Phe Falls A highway from Dawki (a border town near India-Bangladesh border, which is famous for the crystal clear Umngot River) connects you to the state capital Shillong. Along the way are mesmerising views of the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, with golden paddy terraces and carpets of green on rolling hills. Once in a few kilometres, a village market pops up, giving glimpses into the life of the indigenous Jaintia community.

The trek to Phe Phe Falls begins 20 kilometres south of Jowai, the headquarters of West Jaintia Hills. Walking past the bamboo cottages, twirl in a canoe to cross the small stream that flows past the grasslands dotted with purple wildflowers. The 30-minute trail involves the crossing of a shallow stream by foot. The trail offers stunning vistas of the deodar-clad forests and tablelands home to tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes). Krang Suri Falls A detour from the main road, about 10 kilometres south of Phe Phe Falls is Krang Suri Falls. Over the years, its popularity grew bigger, thanks to drone videos and Instagram pictures of the outpouring cascades which give birth to the shimmering blue pool. The trail from the parking lot is 20 minutes long through a quaint stony path. Inch towards the falls to hear the inviting, rumbling sound of the falling water. Dressed in warm blue tones and shades of aqua green, the sight of the base pool is quite tempting. More adventurous souls swim in the shallow pool up to the rocky outcrop, which sits behind the falls – a relaxing place to enjoy the cascading water. Atop the falls are colourful wooden boats to whirl around and soak up the dazzling atmosphere surrounded by greenery. Nearby in the parking lot, local women serve sakin gata – steamed sticky rice cake wrapped in banana leaves. Overnight camping is allowed at the site.

In her 23-year-old life, Dutee Chand has seen it all and has stood up to all the challenges. She is now a symbol of empowerment for women all across India. Clocking 11.22 seconds in the 100m recently, Dutee is prepared to break the 11.15 seconds barrier to reach Tokyo 2020. In this conversation with Boria Majumdar, she shares the way forward for her in the next few months.
GER
Boria - You have recently clocked 11.22 seconds. How determined are you to make it to Tokyo and how important is it for you? Dutee - Tokyo remains my dream and I will do everything I can to make it to the Olympics. If I am able to touch the 11.15 seconds qualification time, it will be my second Olympics after Rio. Every athlete dreams of going to the Olympics. You want to be among the best in the world for only they make it to the Olympics. I
am no different. It is the greatest sports event and to participate in the Olympics in front of a packed stadium is to live a dream. I don’t know if I will make it, but one thing is for certain, there will not be any dearth of effort on my part. Boria - Dutee your life is an extraordinary tale of struggle. How difficult has it been for you and how have you managed to cope with it all? Dutee - Every person has his or her share of challenges in life. I have had mine. Yes, there have been occasions which have been very difficult but never have I given up on things. I have always fought hard for I believe there is justice at the end of it all. In 2014, when I was banned I knew it would be hard for me and I felt very upset and frustrated. But I needed to be patient and kept on fighting. The truth is I never gave up. With the help from family and friends I fought back and eventually won the case at CAS. As far as my relationship is concerned, I have recently spoken about it in Bengaluru. It has been legalised in India and there was no reason for me to keep things hidden from friends and family.

Accolades I hope others who are in a similar relationship feel strong seeing me say it in public and if there are women who need to speak out they should now feel the strength to do so.

Do you now have enough support from the government and from corporate India to train Boria - I had seen you a few years back at for Tokyo? Gopi’s academy in Hyderabad. Music sets the right mood for me
from any genre. Right from classical music (Hindustani, Carnatic or Western), Indian film music, regional language music, Western pop, Rock, Metal, World music, almost any genre, and it works. The only thing that matters is that the tone of the music must match the mood of the scene that I am writing. The lyrics don’t matter, since I zone them out in any case. Once the music sets the mood, and the key to the universe is opened, I can set pen to paper, or less metaphorically, set fingers to the keyboard!
Relationship with music My relationship with music has not been restricted to being only an inspiration to my writing. My marketing team, knowing my passion for music, came up with a brilliant idea for the release of my third book in 2013 (and the last of the Shiva Trilogy, The Oath of the Vayuputras). Vidya Balan
has mesmerised fans in her demure role in Parineeta. Contrary to what many think, Parineeta was not her debut film. Bhalo Theko, a Bengali film, established Vidya's long-lasting bond with Kolkata. One that has led her to, in her own words, "Keep coming back for more!" After these two, she returned later to shoot Kahaani, Te3n and several others. But Vidya will "never have enough of Kolkata. Right from my first feature film, to Pradip Sarkar's Parineeta and even the character of Manjulika in Bhool Bhulaiyaa - all these characters at times make me feel I am a Bengali," she gushes and adds, "whenever I step out of the airport, I feel as if I have lived in Kolkata forever! My family teases me about my loyalty to Kolkata connecting it with my past life. If another film brings me an opportunity to explore another side to Kolkata, I will be back. When I am in Kolkata, I don't miss home that much." In fact, Vidya seems to have what she calls, a 'kismet connection' with Kolkata. "Even before Bhalo Theko, I visited Kolkata for work with director Pradeep Sarkar, who wanted to make a music video with Madhabi Mukherjee and me. That was another experience in itself of interacting with her at her house. The way she spoke Bangla made me pick up my first words of this amazing language," Vidya recalls. In fact, Vidya is often mistaken to be a Bengali. "Everyone speaks to me in Bengali and I show off my Bengali wherever I can as I know songs, rhymes and slangs," she laughs.
She also credits her Bengali friends from the industry for introducing Kolkata to her and says, "From Pradeep da to Goutam da (director of Bhalo Theko, Goutam Haldar), I owe it to them for educating me on every nuance of this city steeped in culture, arts and history. My friend Shantanu Moitra, who randomly sends me Bengali songs. And above all, Sujoy Ghosh, who made me explore Kolkata like never before when we shot Kahaani and Te3n there." Vintage Vibes are so Prominent "When I first came to Kolkata, I remember putting up at Ramakrishna Mission at Golpark. My first interview happened there. No one knew me. Kolkata always opens its heart to me and I am a sucker for love. That hasn't changed. I love it when people say , 'Didi kemon acchhen? Ekta chhobi tulbo.' I am most impressed by Kolkata's ability to marry the past and the present. Look at Park Circus! That place has Flury's alongside the hippest nightclubs! Do not miss the rum balls at Flury's, chai in an earthen cup at Ballygunge Circular Road, Padmapukur, soda at Vivekananda Park. When I drive past these places I feel strange that I was not born here; yet I know each of these places so well. I do think I have an alternative career as a tourist guide in Kolkata!"

"People call it the 'City of Joy', but Kolkata will always be the 'City of Love' for me! One of my favourite things to do is to watch life go by whilst floating on a boat on the Hooghly. I think as a child I used to love Chingari koi bhadke and those lights on Howrah Bridge looked even more ethereal in real life! I think a boat ride on the Hooghly is just so romantic! Especially when you cross Princep Ghat - you are right between the old Howrah Bridge and the new Vidyasagar Setu and wish time would just stop right there! Try and be in Kolkata for at least one day during Pujo. My visit is never complete without visiting Kalighat. I think I was most fascinated by Kumhortuli. December 2019
Though there is no silver bullet which can provide an immediate solution, the situation is not as hopeless as it appears. With the right set of sustained measures, a turnaround in air quality can be achieved in a few years. After harvesting the paddy crop, the farmers in North India burn the residue as it is the cheapest way of clearing the fields quickly so that they can do the sowing for the next crop. Ordering farmers not to burn their crops is easy but is unenforceable. Change in cropping patterns away from paddy, though desirable for sustainable water
People walking the streets with N95 masks on, oddeven scheme coming into action for vehicles, schools shutting down to avoid further trouble....we're talking about that time of the year when air pollution becomes a major topic of discussion. The problem exists throughout the year and the reasons are plenty. All that is required is some administrative measures and small steps by individuals to curtail air pollution. Words Ajay Shankar
use and agriculture, is unlikely to happen in next few years even with the best of efforts. The Supreme Court of India got it right when it talked of paying farmers for the added cost of removing the crop waste from their fields instead of burning it. This is bound to work. The waste can be converted into briquettes that can be used in place of coal in thermal power plants to the extent of 10-20 per cent. If the government decides to purchase all the briquettes for the next four years at an attractive price, then market forces would deliver. Private investors would put up small village-level briquette making plants and would pay farmers an attractive price for the crop waste. The farmer would get some additional income. The thermal plants are using imported coal and would not incur any extra cost by substituting imported coal with briquettes. Expecting Hope A major relief towards this direction is going to be the availability of BS 6 standard fuel across the country from the next year onwards. This is the present European standard and air pollution from automobiles is not a real issue in Europe now. In the next few years, automobile companies would be selling vehicles made for this fuel. The benefit from cleaner fuel would, however, not be felt for many years as the old vehicles would continue to be used. Old commercial vehicles – trucks, buses, tempos, threewheelers and taxis – cause far more pollution than personal vehicles. An option

accelerate the transition. It can be done through internal cross-subsidy by the oil companies, or, by a subsidy from the government. The benefits from lower air pollution and the improved quality of life of women far outweigh the subsidy costs. Once the gas grid covers all urban areas, it would be possible to provide gas for industrial and commercial uses without any restrictions to meet full demand. Such supply needs no subsidies. Then the use of polluting fuels can be banned, and the ban becomes easily enforceable as the alternative clean fuel of gas is readily available. The industrial activity also pollutes the air with the chemicals in the waste it generates. The consumption of industrial goods has the same impact. High numbers of PM2.5 in the air is worse in its effects on health and the chemicals in it are often correlated with a higher incidence of cancer. An audit and mapping of wastes in the industrial clusters in the country would be the starting point for dealing with this problem. It should be started and completed at the earliest. Thereafter, costeffective waste management can be done to ensure that air pollution is reduced to the minimum, if not could be to offer an attractive cash incentive eliminated. Fortunately, the costs for trading in an old commercial vehicle and of waste management have been physically scrapped that. This would expedite declining and are affordable. There is the process of fleet replacement. Initially, all no option but to incur these costs for commercial vehicles of BS 1, 2 and 3 may the health of all. be taken up for scrapping. A man with many hats
Capt. Ashim Mittra joined IndiGo in July 2006 and has been a part of this leading and trendsetting airline since its inception. Starting his aviation career as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Indian Airlines 37 years ago, Capt. Mittra later qualified to become an Airbus 300 Flight Engineer in 1981 and then obtained a Commercial Pilot’s License from the US. He has flown the Boeing 737-200/700/800NG and Airbus A320 and has over 20,000 hours of flying experience. He is also a DGCA Designated Examiner on the Airbus 320. At IndiGo, Capt. Ashim Mittra leads the Flight Operations department with more than 4,000 pilots spread across 11 bases and hundreds of support team members. It is a tough task, but he does it with ease and, of course, an endearing smile. He has inspired pilots at IndiGo to deliver safe, on time and hasslefree experiences to millions of our passengers. His warmth is ever spreading and he makes everyone feel special and included. His guidance, smile and sense of humour keeps his team motivated and running strong. As the Senior Vice President, Flight Operations, he has contributed immensely to overall growth of IndiGo, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and discipline in daily operations. He has the uncanny ability to deliver equally in a meeting room or the cockpit. With great honour we share that on December 09, 2019, Capt. Ashim Mittra will take his last flight as a commercial airline pilot. His legacy will always remain as a deep footprint at IndiGo. If you happen to be on one of his flights this month, do take the opportunity to greet him.
In order to highlight the increasing importance of mountains on a global level, in 2003, the United Nations declared December 11 as International Mountain Day. This was done to address the issue of sustainable mountain development, that was adopted at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. The theme for 2019's International Mountain Day is 'Mountains matter for Youth'.
