Heritage walks

Connect with the history of Amritsar by reliving the sites that matter. A leisurely stroll on the Heritage Street, from the historic Town Hall to the Golden Temple gives you a sneak peek into the grandeur of what Amritsar was. This one-kilometre stretch feels like a walk through an open museum.

A walk from downtown Dhaka to Old Dhaka along narrow streets and amidst tall, crumbling buildings offers a different but beautiful side of the city. The walk covers the french part of Old Dhaka, Spice Market and ends at the boat docks giving glimpses of past and present.

Shopping galore Phulkari embroidered suits and duppatta, patiala salwar, juttis, papads and much more are found in almost all markets of Amritsar. Traditional handicrafts, trendy accessories, jewellery and ornaments are other things to buy.

Traditional Jamdani silk sarees, brass, leather, bamboo products, ceramics, jewellery, and the famous pink pearls are the best shopping items from Dhaka. The Mouchak Market in the Malibagh area is known for chunky and brightly coloured jewellery.

For nature lovers Harike Wetland & Bird Sanctuary is the largest wetland in North India. This man-made wetland spreads into Tarn Taran Sahib, Ferozepur and Kapurthala in Punjab, making it a famous destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.

Baldha Garden, in old Dhaka is a unique creation of late Narendra Narayan Roy, the landlord of Baldha. Established in 1904, the garden with its rich collection of indigenous and exotic plants is one of the most exciting attractions for botanists, naturalists and tourists.

Recommendation: Explore the narrow by lanes of the old Amritsar which were made centuries ago, either by walking or rent a bicycle. In Dhaka, visit a nearby village and see the way of life, including the jute cultivation and pottery making.

Look out for a crispy light batter tempura in sweet sauce and fluffy rice. Tokyo buns Japan was introduced to bread in 1850. Today you would find these devilishly addictive, crunchy deep-fried buns with a mild yet flavourful curry filling abundantly. Visiting Ginza Kimurya, which is traditionally noteworthy for being the first bakery in Tokyo to sell anpan (bread rolls filled with azuki bean paste), is a must for every tourist. Omurice The humble western-style Japanese omelette made with fried rice topped with a lot of ketchup, invented in Ginza in the 1900s, has been raised to an art form in Tokyo with chefs

You would get two varieties: fried rice enfolded in an omelette and sprinkled with ketchup, or fried rice capped with an egg-shaped omelette enveloped with a custard like filling that covers the rice with a lavish creaminess. Karaage An old Japanese culinary practice dating back to 1600, the secret to the karaage’s (fried chicken) triumph is the ideal proportion of crunchiness to a juicy meal. It has to be moist inside and crispy on the outside. There are also a varied choice of finishes: spicy, sweet, fried garlic and soy glazed. let's travel

Travel for food

Food tourism refers to exploring the gastronomic offers of a specific place. This includes food and beverages both. A culinary tour is much more than travelling to eat or drink. The latest trend in this kind of travel is interacting with local people, learning more about the local cuisine and ingredients, visiting farms/wineries and participating in cooking classes.

MANAGE TRASH MAKE A DIFFERENCE Trash management can be defined as the collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage, and other waste products. The entire idea refers to re-using garbage as a valuable resource and given our current environmental scenario, this process is extremely vital for all households and businesses. Words Neel Sen 56

January 2021

Better Environment It eventually leads to a fresher environment and also contributes to the well-being of people. Multiple waste disposal units should be placed in tier-1 and tier-2 cities in a bid to prep up the process of waste disposal. This will also help implement remarkable safety measures in the long run. Reduces Pollution Waste prevention and recycling offer significant potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions like carbon-dioxide, carbon mono-oxide, and methane that are often exuded from accumulated wastes in landfills. Managing waste reduces our reliance on landfills and cuts down many factors that adversely impact our environment.

The rate of waste generation across the world is rising alarmingly. In 2016, the worlds’ cities generated around 2.01 billion tonnes of solid waste, amounting to a footprint of 0.74 kilograms per person per day. With rapid population growth and urbanisation, annual waste generation is expected to increase by 70% per cent (approx 3.40 billion tonnes in 2050). Managing waste properly is essential for building sustainable and livable cities, but it remains a challenge for many developing countries. Over 90 per cent of waste is often disposed in unregulated dumps or openly burned in these countries and residents are severely impacted by this. Such practices create serious health, safety, and environmental consequences. Poorly managed waste serves as a breeding ground for diseases and methane generation. BENEFITS OF TRASH MANAGEMENT Effective waste management is expensive but its benefits are immense. Just take a look:

Conserves Energy Recycling the waste helps conserve energy. Reuse and recycling conserve natural resources including trees, metals and water. When a used paper is recycled to create new paper, the need of cutting trees is significantly minimised. This helps conserve energy while reducing our carbon footprints. Creates Employment Recycling is an eco-friendly practice. Governments offer subsidies to establish recycling units and it helps creating hundreds of jobs. METHODS OF WASTE DISPOSAL Landfills This is a common practice in developing countries. It gives rise to air and water pollution which severely affects the environment and can prove fatal to the lives of humans and animals. Therefore, civil bodies should reconsider the use of landfills. Incineration/Combustion This method lets solid wastes burn at high
