Through PURPLE FLOWER Fields of Ladakh

As the summer gradually steps back, rhythms in nature change in the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. The interim twilight period between summer and harsh winters is marked by colours of nature which themselves are poetic measures of transitional time. Interestingly, the dominant colour to watch out for is purple when the beautiful sights of the lush lavender fields of the Nubra Valley in August-September gladden the senses.

32

July-August 2021

The lower region of Nubra Valley is warmer than Leh. The Shyok River and its tributary Nubra makes the valley agriculturally productive. The valley remained an important location in the east-west trade axis, called by the German Geographer Ferdinand von Richtofen in 1877, the Silk Road. Today, the term is used in a more general manner. The mountainous summer and winter routes of the Nubra area have played a vital role in ancient times linking the traders passing through Ladakh. These routes remained open till 1950, but the last major caravan that went this way was in 1939-40. The testimony of the movement of caravans of traders, soldiers, and a whole set of people lies in the living evidence of doublehumped camels, and Mongolian manuscripts in various monasteries in the region.

33

The Fertile Valley Nubra is a high-altitude cold desert with patches of vegetation of willows and poplars, and fields irrigated with the water from the melting glaciers and the rich alluvial deposits of the rivers. The fertile land of the nubra valley, used for the cultivation of grains and fruits, is nurtured by the Shyok and Nubra

Rivers. Popularly called the orchard of Ladakh, Nubra valley offers a graceful view of yellow and pink wild roses in summer and a carpet of wild lavender in the post-monsoon season. The fragrance of wild lavender fills the air and wild roses called Siah (after which the famous Siachen glacier is named) give colour to this otherwise monotone landscape.

What's unique Lavender is a versatile cash crop whose distilled oil has a demand for its aroma value in the markets related to perfumery, flavour, cosmetic industry. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, helps to heal minor burns and in treating anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness.

The Gompa of the village is the best site for watching the gorgeous sunset and is noteworthy for its old frescoes and Buddha's statue.

More than Lavender The trekking to Nubra Valley from Leh is full of beautiful sights including 4,600 - 4,800m high rocks, alpine flora such as mosses and wild mint, barren mountains covered with ice and passing through Khardong La, the highest mountain pass in the world. Diskit is the largest village here, known for its apricots along with the Diskit Gompa, which is more than 350 years old. The beautiful sand dunes of Hunder village have an ethereal beauty that is further enhanced with the excitement of a possibility of spotting the double-humped camels that are found here. The Gompa of the village is the best site for watching the gorgeous sunset and is noteworthy for its old frescoes and Buddha's statue. Beautiful to the core, August and September are months to visit this wonder of nature.

TUSCANY

Did you know? In 1883, a Florence born man named Carlo Collodi had written a book, The Adventures of Pinocchio. A local puppeteer decided to bring the character to life, and a wooden puppet version of Pinocchio was created, long before the story was made into a hit Disney film.

38

July-August 2021

From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces. Seven sites are included by UNESCO on the World Heritage list: not only the historic center of art cities such as Florence and Siena, but also the villages of Pienza and San Gimignano, Piazza del Duomo in Pisa and the incredible landscape of Val d'Orcia that’s the perfect union between nature and human work. You can breathe culture in every corner of Tuscany, rooted in antiquity. Start your journey with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of

art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. In Florence apart from visiting Piazzale Michelangelo, you will find a whole other world to be explored in the Oltrarno. In Tuscany, there are unique museums that house invaluable pieces such as the Uffizi Gallery, a treasure chest of masterpieces, or the Accademia Gallery, where you can admire the majestic David by Michelangelo. The monumental architecture of Siena is awe inspiring. Enjoy a leisurely walking tour and explore the museum at Palazzo and Santa Maria della Scala. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears.

for sustainable tourism

Seychelles has earned its reputation as a relatively unspoiled haven for people and wildlife, but it remains under pressure in a variety of forms, including climate change, insensitive development, and over-exploitation of resources. But as responsible tourism emerges as a big global trend, the Indian Ocean archipelago has hit its stride.

Did you know? Aldabra tortoise is one of the largest species of land tortoises in the world, this giant herbivore was near extinct in 1840, and now thrives thanks to the government’s captive breeding program.

40

July-August 2021

In a bid to achieve a plastic-free Seychelles, the country banned plastic bags and single-use plastics such as cutlery in 2017, and now hoteliers and businesses are set to eliminate the use of plastic by 2020. Although many of Seychelles’ conservation success stories have been an example to the world, and small island restoration efforts have been well rewarded, with the recovery of habitats and some of the most endangered species that depend on them, there is still much to do. Visitors to Seychelles choose the destination solely because of its conservation credentials, but they leave with increased awareness and a new appreciation for the environment.

The former imperial capital of Japan, Kyoto is a living testimony to the grace and fame of its country’s past. Willow-shaded townhouses, mysterious white-faced geisha, immaculate rock gardens, and ancient pagoda temples define its distinctive allure. From its snow-clad Golden Pavilion, cherry blossomladen streets, and vibrant red maples to its samurai swords and feudal ninjas, Kyoto has many as 2000 shrines and Buddhist temples.

KYOTO

For a deep dive into zen, go for a forest bathing experience or opt for walking trails that snake through bright green bamboo soaring up to 1,000 feet in height. The Japanese Tea Ceremony, or 'The Way of Tea', is one of Kyoto’s best-known cultural traditions and can be enjoyed at one of Kyoto’s many traditional teahouses. Kyoto remains the spiritual home of the tea ceremony as well as tea growing. Try a real tea ceremony where the spirit of tea (that is, enjoyment) is emphasized more than the mere rules and forms. One of the best places to enjoy it is En, a small Japanese teahouse in Kyoto near Chion-in Temple.

Did you know? Kyoto has more than 1650 temples, 400 Shinto Shrines, 800 shrines, a castle, three palaces, and countless city parks and gardens!

Cape Town exhibits the pinnacle of natural beauty and tranquillity. The Table Mountain National Park houses the incredible flattopped namesake. With other magnificent landscapes like Company’s Garden, Green Point Urban Park, and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens this forms the city’s playground for adventure and outdoor fun — from hiking to paragliding.

Did you know? The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is nearly a century old. On October 4, 1929, the first Cable Car chugged its way to the top filled with excited visitors. It’s been upgraded a number of times since.

Then there’s Boulder Beach, a great spot to see penguins flocking and for a quick dip in the warm waters yourself. Glen Beach or Long Beach is where you can go to catch some waves and beautiful sunsets too. The rustic, charming, and ultra-luxurious experiences of Cape Town tourism are a drive away. Visit the Winelands for its pretty towns and sprawling plantations. DuelAction

Duel Action Fasten your seat belts as we take you on a 360 degree ride through two IndiGo destinations. Standing tall in the two secondary colours of IndiGo, there’s Shillong in one corner and Hanoi in another.

SHILLONG

HANOI

Artistic traditions Home to multiple venues for live music, Shillong is widely known as the rock capital of India. However, things are changing now as musicians of other genres, like hip hop, funk or blues, have come into the scene. Watching them live across the many city venues is something that you will cherish forever.

Water puppetry is an ancient art form that has long been associated with Hanoi. Considered to be one of the cultural highlights of Northern Vietnam, dating back to 11th century, watching the puppets dance elegantly, controlled by a troupe of eight puppeteers, is a treat to the eyes.

The foodie tales When in Shillong, you should try the authentic momos in one of the old restaurants in Police Bazaar area. Expect meaty fillings in creamy, light shells with spicy chutney to go with it.

Banh Cuon, a combination of ground meat, minced wood ear mushroom, onions, Vietnamese ham (cha lua), is a great option as a light breakfast or midday snack. Try it at one of the local vendors at Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Shoppers' delight

Lewduh market or Bara Bazaar, the oldest and largest traditional market in Meghalaya, has the distinction of being one of rare markets where most of the shops are run by women vendors. This place sells traditional items like handloom products and ethnic food items.

The Weekend Night Market in Hanoi, taking place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is a place to get your hands on fashionable T-shirts, handicrafts, accessories, shoes, sunglasses and souvenirs. The environment is lively and bargaining is a way of life here.

For nature lovers Around 15 kms from the heart of Shillong is Umiam Lake. Also known as Barapani, this lake spreads over 10 sq kms and is wrapped in the beauty of an assortment of tress and azure blue skies. You can spend an entire evening just soaking in the majestic views.

Famous for its outstanding natural beauty, Ba Vi National Park offers a great escape from the city life of Hanoi. The place is full of peaks, viewpoints, natural hot springs, waterfalls and old French colonial churches.

For adventure junkies If you love lush greenery and sublime views, David Scott Trail is the one for you. Named after David Scott, a British administrator who operated in and around the Khasi hills for nearly 30 years, it's a 16-km trek which stretches from Mawphlang to Ladmawphlang.

One of the most famous spots in Vietnam, Halong Bay consists of a series of amazing limestone islands. Soak up the scenery as you cruise around Halong Bay, and see the natural wonders such as Thien Cung cave, Driftwood Island, and Dau Go grotto.

Recommendation: While in Shillong, do not miss Elephant Falls, which is just a few minutes drive from Shillong Peak. In Hanoi, don't miss the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the final resting place of the most iconic and popular leader of Vietnam.

Green Intentions

LET THIS GENTLE GIANT LIVE The elephant is loved, revered and respected by people across India, yet the future of the species is threatened by the escalation of poaching, habitat loss, human-elephant conflict and mistreatment of elephants in captivity. On August 12, 2016, India formally adopted the 'World Elephant Day' to help conserve and protect elephants in India and improve their welfare. Words Neel Sen 60

July-August 2021

The World Elephant Day was launched on August 12, 2012 globally to mobilise attention and support for conservation of Asian and African elephants. Working towards better protection for wild elephants, improving enforcement policies to prevent the illegal poaching and trade of ivory, and conserving elephant habitats, are imperative for saving the elephant. Why They matter India is home to between 50 and 60 per cent of all of Asia’s wild elephants and about 20 per cent of the domesticated elephants. As such, the country is of paramount importance for the survival of the species. The elephant plays a central role in Indian life and has done for many centuries. Elephants are closely associated with religious and cultural heritage, playing an important role in the country’s history. Elephants are not only a cultural icon in India and throughout Asia, they also help to maintain the integrity of their forest and grassland habitats. Ground Reality Elephants are nomadic animals that move through large traditional home ranges to known sources of food and water. Sadly, the forests they once familiar are now converted into tea gardens and paddy fields, or submerged by dams or devastated by mines. Only about five percent of the species’ original habitat remains, and even this is fragmented by highways, railway lines, canals, reservoirs, tourism infrastructure and power transmission lines. With natural habitats shrinking and getting fragmented, man and elephant are thrown into conflict. Poaching is another very serious threat. Elephants are poached for ivory, which is much in demand for artifacts, jewellery and other things. Experts estimate that India has only about 1,200 tuskers (among Asiatic elephants, only males have long tusks and are therefore known as tuskers). Today only about 27,000 wild elephants remain in India, as opposed to a million a decade ago, according to research. There has been a 98 per cent nose-dive in the wild elephant population.

61

Did you know?

The Asian Elephant Elephas maximus was once widely distributed throughout the country, including in states like Punjab and Gujarat. Currently, they are found only in 14 states, in four fragmented populations, in South, North, Central and Northeast India. The elephant has been accorded the highest possible protection under the Indian Wildlife Law through its listing under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 of India. This means that hunting/ trading this species can attract rigorous imprisonment of up to seven years and a minimum fine of Rs 25000. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has listed the Asian Elephant in Appendix I which prohibits all commercial international trade of the species.

62

July-August 2021

Elephants are not only a cultural icon in India and throughout Asia, they also help to maintain the integrity of their forest and grassland habitats. Measures required Today Elephants face an all-encompassing threat such as shrinkage of their forest ranges, habitat defragmentation, poaching for their body parts and captivity, and anthropogenic pressure. Apart from developing a sympathetic approach towards saving this species, we also require: Building protected elephant corridors To reduce negative human-elephant interactions. Creation of ‘no-go’ and ‘slow-go’ zones in the elephant reserves. Greater local community participation in conservation. Strict action against poachers and rule violators. The need of the hour is to first estimate the current population of Asiatic elephants, and then recognise and take effective action against the grave threat these gentle giants face from poaching and loss of habitat.

STATUS Endangered POPULATION 20,000 – 25,000 SCIENTIFIC NAME Elephas maximus indicus HEIGHT 6-11 feet at the shoulder WEIGHT 5 tons LENGTH up to 21 feet HABITATS Subtropical broadleaf forest, tropical broadleaf moist forest, dry forest, grassland Source:www.worldwildlife.org

Empowering women through financial independence Women empowerment is one of the key pillars of IndiGo’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programs. We train women to undertake income generation initiatives in their own village to bring about a change; whether in their own or in their communities' lives. One such project named, WATER (Women collectives led Action Towards Environment Rejuvenation) being implemented in three districts of Jharkhand in collaboration with PRADAN focuses on capacity building of about 37000 women to increase their income through farm and non-farm activities. Women have been collectivised and trained to work on natural resource management

so that they plan their agricultural activities to enhance production. They are also trained to use financial institutions such as banks and leverage existing government schemes. Jogini Devi, Babita, Shaanti, Poorna and many more like them are passionate and determined women who are farmers and entrepreneurs. They overcame various challenges and made sure that they use their talents and skills to the best of their abilities. They are agents of change in true sense and would continue to inspire women and girls in their villages in future.
