March 14, 2021 Pi Day

A Mathematician’s Delight Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi, also known by the Greek letter 'π', is a constant value used in math that represents the ratio of a circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is just about 3.14….15…9265359… (and so on). It is a coincidence that the day coincides with Albert Einstein’s birthday.

SANTORINI Santorini is one of the most iconic Greek islands to visit. Crumbly cliffs, gorgeous sunsets from Oia or an unforgettable hike to the top of Santorini Volcano, the place is undoubtedly offers some major tourist goals. Its whitewashed buildings, the vast blue sky, the hypnotic mix of blue and black colours of the sea, rooftops of churches, doors of houses, all transport you to a different world. But this iconic look of the place is not intentional rather it is originated from their necessity.

34

March 2021

With little to no wood available, most of the buildings in Santorini are made from volcanic stone. The material works well as an insulator, but its dark colour absorbs the heat, making it really hot to be indoors. Therefor, the buildings were painted white, using a layer of plaster made from limestone, to reflect the harsh sun rays. To toned down its bright colour, a blue-tinted household cleaning powder called 'loulaki' was mixed in it and the solution gets dyed blue. Hence the white and blue landscape that we admire today.

IZAMEL The Yellow City of Mexico offers a stunning visual delight. Most of the building are coloured in bright egg yolk yellow, often trimmed in white. The reason for this pastel hues can be traced back to their ancient tradition. Since 1000 BC, Izamal has been a pilgrimage site where Mayans offer respect to Kinich Kakmo, a sun god. So, if people were to choose a color for their houses, it might make sense to honor the town’s deity. In 1993, when Pope John Paul II was visiting Izamal to perform a mass as part of his tour of Mexico, the town knew it had to spruce up the place. People came up with the idea to paint all the houses, including the convent, in one colour - Yellow the colour of sun, the corn, and then of course the Vatican flag.

35

JAIPUR Jaipur is known as the pink city. Every building within this walled city is painted in terracotta pink colour that gives a uniform colour code to the entire city. The reason for this colour code was the Maharaja of Jaipur. In 1876, the Prince of Wales visited India. Pink is a colour that symbolises hospitality. To welcome his counterpart in

a grand manner, Jaipur's Maharaja, Sawai Ram Singh II decided to renovate the main streets of the city, which were supposed to be visited by the Prince Albert Edward. Maharaja also constructed a lavish concert hall and named it after his prestigious guest, Albert Hall. Today, the exquisite Albert Hall stands amid the scenic Ram Niwas Public Garden.

Every building within this walled city is painted in terracotta pink colour that gives a uniform colour code to the entire city.

The Painted Village

Zalipie is a small village in Poland. The houses, churches, schools, and even the trees of this village are painted with bouquets of brightly colored flowers. The paintings first started in the 1800s when women in the village painted floral displays to cover up the soot caused by smoky stoves. The tradition continues till date.

Agra

March 2021

Agra is an architectural paradise. Its grandeur brings to the vision a sense of immense power, splendour and magnificence. Extensive use of the red sandstone and white marble as building material, techniques of decor, along with sheer scale and grandness in the design are a treat for eyes.

During Akbar's reign, Agra became the repository for all the wealth and talent of Mughal empire in the medieval world. The city manifests Akbar's love for the art and sandstone, in particular, on a monumental scale. The red sandstone buildings, clear blue skies and the greenery around them in itself create a lyrical atmosphere - a poem told through sandstone. Lets explore this further...

39

Did you Know? The external entrance of Sikandara resembles the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri, the city Akbar founded.

Sikandara The red sandstone mausoleum of Emperor Akbar is an architectural splendour with its towering gate, miniscule minarets and manicured gardens. They are constructed mainly from a deep red sandstone, enriched with features in white marble. Akbar's tomb is a blend of styles. The magnificent entrance, use of exquisite patterns, excellent jaali work (intricately perforated decorative stone screens), fine Persian style calligraphy, the charbagh garden layout explains Islamic influence whereas the absence of a dome, use of chhatris, tiers of airy pavilions, reflect a local influence, which are also found in the buildings built by Akbar in Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

40

March 2021

Akbar's tomb is a blend of styles. Sikandara is constructed mainly from a deep red sandstone, enriched with features in white marble.

Red Fort Akbar built his remarkable Red Fort beside the River Yamuna in Agra city. Part fortress, part palace, the fort is adorned with exquisite carvings, lattice and pierced-stone screens, wall paintings, canopied roofs, carved brackets and pilasters, all created within the massive red sandstone walls of the fort. The magnanimous Agra Fort used to be the main residence of the Mughal emperors till 1638. The glorious fort was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the architectural brilliance of the walled fortress. Around 4,000 builders completed the structure in eight continuous years.

Did you Know? Agra and its neighbouring areas are famous for sandstone, a sedimentary rock composed of sand-size grains of mineral, rock, or organic material.

41

Did you Know? Buland Darwaza was built as a victory arch to commemorate Akbar's successful Gujarat campaign.

All the buildings in the royal complex are built of locally sourced red sandstone. Akbar was a great lover of the colour and he built his buildings massively and preferably with sandstone. 42

March 2021

Fatehpur Sikri Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km away from Agra, is a fort on an elevated rocky place. Encircled by stunning gardens, the place has a rich red hue that is eluded from the red sandstone used in its construction. It consists of palaces, public buildings and mosques, as well as living areas for the court, army and servants of the king. All the buildings in the royal or Imperial Complex are built of locally sourced red sandstone. Akbar was a great lover of the colour and he built his buildings massively and preferably with red sandstone. Each building has its own special features or embellishments distinguishing it from the others.

THE GREEN COLOUR OF EARTH The beauty and tranquility of forests all over the world — from tropics to the tundra — inspire all of us. But forest cover is dwindling and threats to the world’s forests are growing.

March 2021

Forests are called the lungs of the environment. They produce oxygen and various other very important natural resources. Increase in population and its demand for food, wood and house is responsible for most of the world’s deforestation. Unsustainable logging, usually resulting from the demand for cheap wood and paper, is responsible for most of the degradation of the world’s forests—the largest threat to the world’s forests. When trees are cut down or burnt they release the carbon back into the atmosphere and it affects our environment.

Corporate Social Responsibility - IndiGoReach Corporate Social Responsibility - IndiGoReach

Preserving Environment The IndiGoReach Way As part of one of our CSR initiatives on Environment, IndiGo Reach, the CSR arm of IndiGo, has collaborated with an organization called Chetanalaya. We have joined hands to work on upcycling of our old seat covers, crew uniforms and other materials and convert them into useful and marketable products such as folders, carry bags, lunch bags, travelling pouches, laptop sleeves, i-pad covers, etc. These products are designed and developed by the women who are engaged in rag picking

in few areas of New Delhi. They are trained and developed as artisans to make quality finished products by the organization. This Upcycling project is creating livelihood opportunities for these artisans who earn a profit by selling the finished products. Additionally, the project is preventing a huge amount of discarded clothes from going into landfills and thus contributing to the recycling initiative that IndiGo is passionate about.
