Day May 21, 2021 A pledge to protect An endangered species is an animal or plant that's considered at risk of extinction. Losing even a single species can have disastrous impact on our ecosystem, because the effects will be felt throughout the food chain. From providing cures to deadly diseases to maintaining natural ecosystems, the benefits of preserving threatened and endangered species are invaluable.
These are tough times for all of us; but we are determined to be positive and believe that we will all emerge stronger and more resilient from this crisis. The nation is in throes of this together and IndiGo is determined to provide whatever service our nation requires at this time. We have been working non-stop as we deliver medical supplies, vaccines and oxygen concentrators for the people both via domestic and international cargo flights.
“Happiness. That’s what books smell like. Happiness.” Saran MacLean
To keep ourselves meaningfully engaged, there is no better world than the world of books. Books not only help enrich our minds but also provide a dreamy haven for our minds to wander in the swirls of imagination! They act as a companion that takes you
through challenging times. While the internet and television are useful in their own ways, nothing can compare to the pleasure of a great book. The May-June issue of HELLO 6E is dedicated to books. From exploring Tbilisi, the World Book City for 2021 to enjoying the beauty of some sculptures and murals that are inspired by books, the issue is a beautiful compilation.

The College Street is most famous for its small and big book stores, which gives it the nickname Boi Para (Colony of Books). The milelong avenue is dotted with hundreds of bookstores, big and small, and is also home to India’s biggest publishing houses. It is a half-mile street of bookshops and bookstalls spilling over onto the pavement, carrying first editions, pamphlets, paperbacks in almost every Indian and foreign language. One can buy rare books at throw-away prices at this one of India's largest book market.

The name College Street is derived from the presence of many colleges (Presidency University, The Sanskrit College and University, City College of Commerce & Business Administration to name a few). When these institutions were established in the 19th century, they turned the stretch of road between Mahatma Gandhi Road crossing and Bowbazar crossing into a veritable haven for the city’s intelligentsia.

THE LITERARY
SIDE OF TBILISI
Georgia's Tbilisi is the new World Book Capital of 2021. Around the slogan - 'Ok. So your next book is…?' The programme focuses on the use of modern technologies as powerful tools for the promotion of reading among young people. This would help the country to establish its footprints in the world as the centre of reading and writing. 35
With its exotic alphabet and profound history of literary eloquence, Georgia is focusing with great care on maintaining and nurturing its unique linguistic heritage. Lying on the banks of the Kura River, Tbilisi is known for its distinctive architecture and fascinates the visitors at a first glance. Tbilisi has the image of harmoniously integrated city of ancient and modern and through centuries it has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The plan for a year The programme comprises several important, large-scale and sustainable activities involving libraries and a book festival for children, a stateof-the-art digital project for transforming books into games, and the rebuilding of the first Georgian publishing house. Specifically designed for children, youngsters and readers who have limited access to books, these activities will be driven by innovation. During this period, the city's principal objective is to popularize reading and increase accessibility to books throughout society. There are up to 100 events and projects awaiting Tbilisi visitors and population. These will promote publishing

and library field development, encourage literary processes among children and teens, and popularize reading among adults. There are many events scheduled for children, such as opening a library for children, founding fairytale and illustration festivals, etc. There are also some scientific events planned out: library conferences, research of Georgian publishing fields, literary forum-dialogue with Georgian and foreign publishers, authors, and literary agents. A museum of the repression victims will be opened, and a music printing house from Ilia Chavchavadze's times will be renewed. The honour coincides with the celebration of 130th anniversary of Galaktion Tabidze (a Georgian poet of the twentieth century). This celebration includes multiple activities and events: Tbilisi will host the world's significant authors, publishers, and literary agents. There will be lots of entertaining events, too, such as a flea market of books, literary cosplay, and quests. These will engage as many people as possible.
What's unique The DirectorGeneral of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, named Tbilisi (Georgia) World Book Capital for the year 2021. Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital undertake to promote books and reading and to organize activities over the year.
In 2001, Madrid became the first city to call itself a World Book Capital.

Libraries are some of the most complete and incredible tributes to human knowledge. While it’s the books and facilities that make a library, eye-catching architecture or extravagant interiors make them extra special place to visit.
41
Portugal BIBLIOTECA DO CONVENTO DE MARFA, One of the most significant Enlightenment Libraries in Europe, the library houses some unique and rare examples of the knowledge produced in the West between the 15th and 19th centuries. The convent is lined with more than 40,000 books, arranged and lined up in Rococo style shelves. Natural light floods through the numerous windows lining the hall, causing the rose, gray, and white marble floor to sparkle throughout the day. In 1745, the Pope granted the royal commission permission to house 'forbidden books', which remain a part of the 35,000 leather-bound collection. Considered one of the most beautiful in the world, this library was born in the reign of D. João V, the king who privileged culture and knowledge.

ABBEY LIBRARY OF SAINT GALL,
Switzerland
Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1983, The Abbey Library is a significant medieval monastic library located in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The library collection is the oldest in Switzerland and dates back to around 820 CE. The library holds almost 160,000 volumes, with most available for public use. In addition to older printed books, the collection includes 1650 incunabula (books printed before 1500), and 2100 manuscripts dating back to the 8th through 15th centuries; among the most notable of the latter are items of Irish, Carolingian, and Ottonian production. A virtual library has also been created to provide broader access to the manuscripts: Codices Electronici Sangallenses. Currently, more than 600 manuscripts from the Abbey library of Saint Gall are available in digital format.

Egypt BIBLIOTHECA ALEXANDRINA, 44
A major library and cultural center on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in 2002. The library aims to recapture the spirit and scholarship of the ancient world’s largest and most comprehensive library. The library has shelf space for eight million books, four museums, four art galleries, a planetarium, and a manuscript-restoration laboratory. The complex also houses specialized libraries for maps, multimedia, the blind and visually impaired, young people, and for children. The library's architecture is equally striking. The main reading room stands beneath a 32-meter-high glass-panelled roof, tilted out toward the sea like a sundial, and measuring some 160 m in diameter. The walls are of gray Aswan granite, carved with characters from 120 human scripts.

One of the oldest libraries in Europe, Oxford University’s Bodleian Library is one of the most celebrated in Europe with the Magna Carta and Shakespeare’s First Folio amongst the institution’s 13 million printed items. With over 13 million printed items, it is the second-largest library in Britain after the British Library. In November 2015 its collections topped 12 million items with the acquisition of Shelley's 'Poetical Essay on the Existing State of Things'. Known to Oxford scholars as 'Bodley' or 'the Bod', it is generally used as a reference library. The special collections of the Bodleian Libraries comprise manuscripts and archives, rare books, printed ephemera, maps, music and digitized collections in libraries across Oxford.

Postcards have existed in one form or another since the 1840s, but it wasn't until H L Lipman bought the patent in 1861 that they became commercially available. With the British reign in India, the 1900s to 1930s saw the postcard as a means of communication for Europeans in colonies to connect with their families back home. Reports state that approximately six billion postcards were couriered through the British system between 1902 and 1910.

Some new age entrepreneurs have taken some initiatives to revive this lost tradition, obviously not back to the stature of its past glory but nevertheless. Priced higher than the government issued postcards, these new ones have been carefully packaged and designed to attract the young and uninitiated postcard users. It is this enthusiasm and sincerity in choosing themes for the new age postcard that triggers hope. Old School One of the most recurring themes among postcard publishers is classic literature. It’s a tribute to books and authors that are considered legendary. Penguin has come out with a series of boxed collections of postcards with self explanatory titles, like One Hundred Writers In One Box, One Hundred Book Covers In One Box, Post Cards From The New Yorker, and so on. These cards carry more of the spirit of collectible memorabilia than something you’d actually want to send away. But printed on thick paper, the option always remains open. New Ideas Most postcard makers focus on the tourism arm of travelling when they design their products. Iconic monuments, signature portraits and landscapes are the favourite themes. Today e-postcards have replaced a simple e-mail for a better visual connect. “There is a whole lot of information overload, and to make it

special and personal, it is a good idea to give something unique; after all the idea is to delight someone with your postcard and make it memorable,” a new age online postcard maker asserts. Many enthusiasts, however, like to get their postcards in situ, rather than carry them from home. “I love to travel. And

I like doing it with no strings attached. Postcards are like reminders of my journey, to myself. I always post myself a postcard from a new place I visit, with the date and time. It’s like a time capsule, recording a moment with our own hands and saving it right behind a beautiful picture,” asserts traveller and government employee Ricky Dukpa from the beautiful town of Darjeeling. So, it’s not a bad idea to market these newer options at popular tourist destinations. Even in the midst of efforts of revival, postcards are dwindling between a nostalgic past and an oblivious future. But nobody minds to read a hand-scribbled snail-mail addressed exclusively to them. Then why not begin to send a few to receive those smile-triggering pieces of paper in your real mailboxes!

Collectors' items Delve into the world of deltiology (postcard collecting) which is surprisingly a popular pursuit. Any postally used cards are unique and therefore collectible. They depict art, social history and real life as it was lived. The most collectible cards are originals depicting the Titanic, Art Nouveau, and railway stations.

Duel Action Fasten your seat belts as we take you on a 360 degree ride through two IndiGo destinations. Standing tall in the two secondary colours of IndiGo, there’s Varanasi in one corner and Istanbul in another.
VARANASI
ISTANBUL
Down the history lane Located opposite the Tulsi Ghat, the 17th century Ramnagar Fort and Palace on the eastern banks of the Ganga was built by the Maharaja of Benaras. Carved in red sandstone, the fort houses a temple and a museum with pavilions built in Mughal style and is famous for the 'Durbar hall' dedicated to the public.
Located on the hill atop Istanbul's Old City, the Topkapi Palace was once home to Sultan Mehmet II, who moved to the palace after conquering the city in 1453. Spread over four courtyards and 4,00,000 sqm, the palace buzzes with fountains, opulent pavilions, and a sprawling harem.
The foodie tales When you are visiting Varanasi, make sure you give a try to tamaatar chat at Deena Chaat Bhandar, Dashaswamedh Road. It is a local version of aloo chaat and is made from a mashed mixture of boiled potatoes, tomatoes, onions, green chillies and fresh coriander leaves.

Künefe is a traditional Arab cheese pastry. The Turkish dessert has an amber colour because of the unsalted cheese stuffed in between the two layers of kadayif. The sweet is served warm, soaked in syrup and topped with grounded pistachio.

Shoppers' delight The city of Varanasi is famous world over for its intricate and luxurious Banarsi sarees. You can buy the silk saree anywhere in the city but the best place to pick up an authentic one would be the wholesale shops in Thatheri Bazaar.
Though Istanbul is known for its Grand Bazaar, a little cobble-stoned street near the historic Galata Tower, Serdar-i Ekrem is probably one of Istanbul’s coolest shopping streets. It is filled with quirky shops, designer boutiques, several hotels and excellent restaurants – a perfect shopping stop.
For the night-angels No trip to Varanasi is complete without watching an evening aarti at the Ganges. You can witness the beautiful ritual unfold at the Dashaswamedh Ghat, which is lit at that time with chants, flowers and brass lamps of almost 4.5 kgs.
You are most likely to visit the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque during daylight hours. However, it is best to take a stroll through Sultanahmet during night. The streets are lit after the sunset and you can enjoy the festive atmosphere and beautiful rainbow musical fountains.
For adventure junkies If you are a water baby, you must go on a cruise along the Bosphorus' European & Asian Sides, the Golden Horn, tour near the Black Sea Mouth at Anadolu Kavagi and Poyrazkoy, or to the Princes' Islands. Exploring the majestic city is an exhilarating experience on its own but witnessing it from the sky on a paramotor is what you call mind boggling. When you are in Varanasi, do not miss the chance to view the breathtaking city and the mighty Ganga from the sky. Recommendation: Do make a visit to the deer park in Sarnath. It is about 13 kilometers away from Varanasi. The 1.4 km long Istiklal Avenue is the beating heart of Istanbul and is visited by nearly 3 million people daily.

India is one of the world’s ‘mega diversity’ countries. It is ranked ninth in the world in terms of higher plant species richness. At the ecosystem level, India is also well-endowed, with ten distinct biogeographic zones. But are we on right path to conserve this status or have become blind in the race of modernisation? Explore some facts... India has tremendous biodiversity, genetic as well as of species and ecosystems. It contains over 7 per cent of the world’s biodiversity on 2.5 per cent of the Earth’s surface. This diversity can be attributed to the vast variety of landforms and climates resulting in habitats ranging from tropical to temperate, and from alpine to desert. The number of plant species in India is estimated to be over 45,523 representing about 11.8 per cent of the world’s flora. These include over 17,500 flowering plants of which 4,950 species are endemic to the country. Our globally accepted national ‘hot spots’ are in the forests of the North-East Himalaya and the Western Ghats, which are included in the world’s most bio-rich areas. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are extremely rich in species and many subspecies of different animals and birds have evolved.
Current Scenario The diversity of nature is the result of an evolutionary process that started about two billion years ago. It is, however, being destroyed at an incredible speed, the rain forests are an example of this. The number of species endangered by human activities and the number of natural or semi natural habitats being destroyed, fragmented or changed are constantly growing, which destabilises ecosystems and cause the loss of vital resources. Since 1950, three of four mammal species have been lost and 15-20 plant species have become extinct. Major Threats are: Large-scale development projects such as min ing and dam and road construction. Conversion of biodiversity-rich ecosystems, such as tropical forests to farmlands and industrial and residential sites. P oaching of wildlife and over-harvesting of forest products.
The Project Tiger was started with the financial assistance of WWF in 1973 with 9 Tiger Reserves. Now we have 27 tiger reserves covering a total area of 37,761 km 2. 63
Rays of Hope India has six natural World Heritage Sites having ‘Outstanding Universal Values’ (e.g. Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Nandadevi National Park (including Valley of Flowers), Sundarbans National Park and Western Ghats serial site).
Need of the Day of human species and sustainable For India, conservation of biodiversity is development depend on biodiversity crucial not only because it provides several conservation. Both in-situ and ex-situ goods and services necessary for human conservation have been part of the cultural survival, but also because it is directly traditions in India. By recognizing the role linked with providing livelihoods to and of community in such conservation, these improving socio-economic conditions traditions can be revitalized. for millions of local people, thereby contributing to sustainable development and poverty alleviation. We need to conserve biodiversity keeping in view the direct use values, indirect use values, and intrinsic value of biodiversity. In fact, the very existence
