Travel Smart

The roads are always busy. Be cautious when crossing them. Always carry small amounts of local currency, exchanged at authorised centres.

While greeting someone, bow your head slightly and say xin chao, meaning 'Hello' in Vietnamese.

ANOI is an intoxicating mixture of past and present, French and Asian, chaos and calm. No doubt, Vietnam's capital city gives an authentic feel. The French influence can be seen in its many buildings: the Presidential Palace - a mustard yellow building constructed in 1900, with 30 rooms built in the French colonial style; the 1900 Dong Xuan Market, a haven for food, souvenirs, clothes at affordable prices; Saint Joseph Cathedral, built in 1886 in the Gothic style of medieval Europe located in Hanoi Old Quarter; Hotel Sofitel Metropole Legend Hanoi, a historic luxury hotel opened in 1901 with white painted walls, green windows, wooden plank walls and lawns; and the Hanoi Opera House - a smaller version of the Opéra Garnier in Paris built in 1901. Not surprisingly, Hanoi is called the Paris of East Asia. Equally fascinating are its streets. It takes more than average determination to push through the deluge of scooters, to reach the safety of the narrow pavement where pots of boiling hot soup are vying for attention and space. That is the charm of Hanoi – warm and welcoming, chaotic and peppered. Whichever way you choose to see and experience this city, you will realise that there is never enough time to see it all.

A destination by itself, Hanoi's Old Quarter is filled with several buildings that have a life and character of their own. The streets are crammed with craftsmen and souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants, which make a walk through a miniadventure for the senses. This antique quarter represents the soul of the city.

Located within it is the St. Joseph Cathedral, a stunning example of the 19th century Gothic architecture. Trompe-L’oeil Murals (a joint street art venture between South Korea and Vietnam) covers the blank walls between the stone railway arches in Phung Hung Street. The whimsical

The stunning Temple of Literature, a Confucian temple built in 1070, was Vietnam’s first university and housed within are plenty of halls, statues and inscriptions. It is also featured on the back of the 100,000 Vietnamese Dong banknote and is the finest example of Vietnamese architecture.

3D art appears realistic and depicts memories of Hanoi – a street corner, autumn festival, school girls and street vendors come alive beautifully on the walls. Hanoi’s Old Quarter is famous for the legendary Hoan Kiem Lake (also called Lake of Restored Sword), a small body of green water with an old pagoda sitting on a tiny island inside it. A few museums in the city make this an interesting place for history buffs, particularly the Ho Chi Minh museum, a building resembling the lotus flower with many items that shed light on the life of General Ho.

While pandas are Chengdu’s most priced attraction, the city’s laid-back lifestyle and a vibrant nightlife offer a definite change from China's popular cities like Beijing or the most touristy Shanghai. Though, Chengdu is witnessing a rise in hi-tech start-ups and shopping malls are springing up rapidly, yet drinking tea in a relaxed atmosphere can be experienced almost everywhere in the city. Among the many other reasons for this south-western city to top the list of must-visit places in China is the Sichuan Pepper, the archaeologically and historically significant Jinsha site and the world’s tallest stone

The stunning Wenshu Temple, one of the best-preserved Buddhist Temples dating from the Tang dynasty, is a marvellous example of Chengdu’s architecture.

Stunning ancient sites around Chengdu are examples of China's religious and engineering development, reflecting the influence of Buddhism and to a great extent, its agricultural history. Chengdu’s most recent man-made treasures are as fascinating as the ancient ones. Being one of China’s perennially progressive cities, Chengdu is historically a place where many cultures culminated, and hence, its architecture is fused with tradition while being extremely modern. The stunning Wenshu Temple, one of the best-preserved Buddhist Temples, dating from the Tang dynasty, is a marvellous example of Chengdu’s architecture. The uniqueness of architecture can be seen in well-preserved old buildings like the Kang Jihong Mansion built during 1940s or the Heming Teahouse located in People’s Park.

The city itself is in close proximity to a number of natural destinations like Mount Emei Scenic Area that includes the Leshan Giant Buddha, standing at 71m and carved into the red sandstone. The view from Mount Emei, a popular World Heritage Site, is breathtaking. The first Buddhist temple in China was established on the summit of Mount Emei in the 1st century AD. It is one of Buddhism’s most holy sites. Mount Qingcheng, the birthplace of Chinese Taoism

Spicy hotspot

Probably the most famous of the Sichuan cuisine is the hotpot, which involves simmering meats, vegetables and mushrooms in a pot, spiced up by fiery Sichuan pepper, which leaves a tingling taste on your tongue long after the food is eaten. Sichuanese food is the spiciest food in China and is made famous worldwide by Szechuan chicken or Kung Pao chicken (gong bao ji ding). The bold flavours of Sichuanese cuisine owe their uniqueness to generous use of garlic and the very hot Sichuan Pepper. Exploring Jinli Street will bring you in touch with the city’s historic atmosphere and local snacks like sticky rice cakes or spicy chicken on a stick.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding provides the best kept natural environment for pandas and has effectively managed to save them from extinction in the wild. Verdant bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air and natural hill scene are merged ingeniously at the base. This is also home to black-necked cranes, red pandas and other rare wildlife. In recent years, China has adopted Panda Diplomacy, making this cuddly animal a diplomatic tool as much as a tourist attraction. Tip: Go early to watch the pandas feeding on tender bamboo shoots. As the day warms up, they disappear into their (air-conditioned) living quarters.

Rooting for

Named after Rao Jodha of the illustrious Rathore clan, Jodhpur is the capital of the former princely state of Marwar, embedded in the enigmatic exotica of palace-studded Rajasthan. Words Punita Malhotra

42

October 2019

Code-name Blue City, courtesy a bewitching sprawl of blue-painted houses and blue-blooded royal roots that reposition it at par with its more popular siblings, Jaipur and Jaisalmer. Its claim to fame…a historically invincible fort defining its skyline and an enticing walled area under ambitious through Europe. The British adopt it in the facelift. But the most relatable royal rubmid-1800s and ‘horseback hockey’ becomes off? Licence to a lavish lifestyle. Who’s a thing. Soon, America and Argentina game? latch on.

Game to reign

Time your Jodhpur jaunt to coincide with an event that is deeply connected yet diametrically different from its astonishing architecture. It’s part-cultural, partheritage, part-festive, part-fashion, and all sporty. Where food, wine and grapevine are never out-of-bounds. Not to mention, the rare occasion to hang out with celebrities, international models, fashion designers, and even royals. Scene of all the action? The polo ground.

The once-reserved-for royals legacy thrives on home ground in a much faster, friendlier format. The Jodhpur team, captained by Yuvraj Shivraj Singh, has shaken up the Indian and international polo scene. Brace for a personal pinch of pride, while you witness the city celebrate its success story as the birthplace of ‘modern’ polo, by attending one of the local ‘ooh-la-la’ sporting events. Everyone who’s anyone is around. Expect to find corporate patrons, first-generation players and women riders on the four-legged bandwagon.

Hello, hallowed game with heritage hues. Facing first flush with the Mughal import of the ancient Persian game of Chaugan to northern India. Cut to three centuries. Jodhpur and Polo start getting thick. That’s when legendary Sir Pratap Singh forms the first formal team of Jodhpur, which creates waves all

43

The tightly-knit community pulsates with centuriesold baseline spirit and added new wave of eagerbeaver enthusiasm. Infectious atmosphere, hard to resist. Polo continues to define Jodhpur, and part of the tradition is to dress for the occasion. So, smarten up.

Dress for the occasion

What better way to grace a Polo event than in the garb of an urban sophisticate? The inevitable choice would be Jodhpur pants or Jodhpuris, as they are affectionately nicknamed. Naturally…after all it is fashion with a historic twist. A piece of royal heritage, which has revived itself as a quintessential part of the Indian gentleman’s wardrobe. And polo-perfect, considering the sport’s equestrian foundations from the era of Rajput warriors.

In the late 1800, Sir Pratap Singh, Regent of Jodhpur, an avid Polo player, created a new, improved churidar (traditional Indian long pants) by retaining its tight fit from calf to ankle, and flaring it along the thighs and hips for free movement while riding. Drumroll for the brand new breeches, quickly lapped-up by polo teams across India and the world. And beyond….to cavalry, Hollywood, tennis courts, ski slopes, aviation, car racing and even women fashion, starting with the

1920s debut by Coco Chanel. European style with close-fitting ankle-high Jodphur boots, or in an Indian avatar with embroidered leather jootis…both designed to impress. Alternate look? The classic bandhgala, another Jodhpur invention, reincarnated from the achkan, which, in turn, is a blend of the colonial jacket and local angrakha. An epitome of Indo-Western tailored suits for men and women. Versatile. Always in style. Makeover moments ahead. Bustling traditional Sadar Bazaar to freshly reinvented, contemporary Stepwell Square, the shopping expedition will leave you satiated. While on the hunt, give in to the temptation of vibrant tie-and-dye textiles, elaborate lacquerware, precious antiques and charming puppets…go the whole nine yards. Just for kicks, throw in a fun (not-so-effortless) experiment with the safa, 12 metres of fabric tied into a long turban. Refuel with mouth-watering delights like shahi samosa, pyaz ki

In passing The blue colour of the houses of Jodhpur gives the message of equality and stands against discrimination. Mehrangarh Fort offers an adventurous flying fox activity over the walls of the fort. It offers a fantastic view of crossing over huge bastions, walls, and lakes of the fort. Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the largest and most expensive heritage hotels in the world.

kachori, kitti ki chakki, rabri ka laddoo. Before you venture deep into secret passages that lead to the cool waters of the refurbished Toorji Ka Jhalra, a grand 18th century stepwell, 60 feet deep with 400 flight of stairs. Its carved columns, pavilions and zigzagging steps will leave you culturally kindled. No worries…nirvana is near.

Wrapped in culture

Dreams of time travel morph into reality under the shadow of the formidable walls of the Mehrangarh Fort. Its sumptuous silhouettes, framed against the dark skies, whisper sweet-nothings in your ears…or are they tales of valour, adventure and romance? Mark your calendar for winter…this is also the location for an annual, larger-than-life cultural extravaganza, the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), where culture enthusiasts partake in spectacular concerts showcasing a whole range of world music traditions… from belly dancers and sufi singers to classical music and late-night jamming sessions. Is a return to the royal repast on the cards?

CLASS Street art bridging the gap

TO

Revolutionary or non-revolutionary, thought-provoking or simple, serious or hilarious, traditional or modern, street art is changing the face of countless cities. Words Rajesh Das

LONDON

If you admire street art, London will have your heart. Street art can be spotted in its full glory on the streets of London. Their street art scene is so vibrant that tourists make sure to flock the places that are known to be street art hubs. If you wish to spot some phenomenal street art in the capital city of England, you must check out Leake Street Tunnel, Brick Lane, Shoreditch and Hackney Wich, among many other places. There is not even an inch of space in Leake Street tunnel that does not get sprayed by artists day in and day out. A legal place to spray in London, a lot of professional and amateur street artists come here to practice. Hence, the art on its walls here changes overnight as there is someone or the other spraying over it throughout the day.

Brick Lane is another place where you are sure to get stumped by seeing the magnitude and quality of artwork. On the other hand, at Shoreditch, you’ll mostly spot graffiti street art. Last in the list is Hackney Wich, an industrial area that is home to a lot of artists. So, it is obvious that its walls scream creativity and art.

While wall paintings have been part of the event since its launch, it was for the first time in 2018 that professional graffiti artists became a part to create street art in the neighbourhoods of Fort Kochi.

KOCHI

The resplendent coastal city has so much to offer that tourists often leave the city mesmerised with the promise to come back again. Its rich history, culture, food and scenic beauty are indeed its highlights, however, there is one more thing that is surely going to steal your heart and that is its street art. From Kerala Mural paintings to interesting portraits and environment conservation messages to pulling attention to their culture and history, the walls of the city feel nothing short of an art exhibition. Walk past the famous Fort Kochi or just take a stroll on the streets, you will be charmed by its magnificent art scene. It won’t be wrong to say that the unconventional art form has been embraced beautifully by the Venice of the East.

Clearly, the capital city of Saudi Arabia has understood the relevance

modern times and how.

With the motto to beautify Riyadh and send across strong social and environmental messages, the authorities have initiated the campaign ‘Under the Kingdom’s Vision of 2030’ in April this year. The aim of the project is to, “significantly improve the lives of its citizens, transform the city into an attractive destination and make it one of the world’s most livable cities”. These compelling art work on the streets are scattered all over the city. What is noticeable here is that most of Riyadh’s street murals are small in size covering a part of a whole wall instead of covering an entire wall.

DELHI

A mecca of art connoisseurs and artists since time immemorial, Delhi never fails to cast its spell on someone who has a special place for anything artistic in his heart. In the last few years, street artists are constantly adding to the charm of the city with their colourful imagination and strokes. Whether its the life-size mural of Mahatma Gandhi at the Delhi Police Headquarters or the openair public art district of Lodhi Colony, artists are transforming public spaces into creative canvases.

If you happened to be in the city and want to stumble upon some stunning unconventional street art murals, you must check out Hauz Khas Village, Shahpur Jat, Connaught Place, Khirki Extension, and New Delhi Railway Station. Just outside Agrasen ki Baoli, there’s a stretch of wall famous for its dramatic street art. The Arjan Garh metro station is another example where artists have filled the facade with their rendition of birds and animals found in India.

PV Sindhu, since winning the world championship after beating Nozomi Okuhara in straight games in Basel on August 25, 2019, has been the toast of India. From meeting the Prime Minister to being felicitated by all her sponsors, the cameras haven’t stopped rolling since she returned home. But Sindhu, in the midst of all the chaos, continues to sport a smile and absorb it all. She has been there and done that in the aftermath of Rio 2016. The most important competition of your life is less than 12 months away. Now the expectations will skyrocket... I don’t mind expectations. Rather it motivates me. As long as you don’t treat this as pressure you are fine. I have been able to deal with these pressures and don’t see a problem going forward.

It was nice to see you dedicate the trophy to your mother. Fitting tribute for the sacrifices they have put in. Without my parents supporting me, I couldn’t have done a third of what I have. I was thinking what to give her for her birthday and now she says this is the best gift she has ever got. There can’t be a better feeling for me than to see them really happy.

Did you indulge with your favourite biriyani or ice cream after coming back from Basel? Ha ha ha! Because I was able to avoid all my favourites, I managed to do what I did. And you were the one who got me multiple scoops of ice cream on the evening of the Rio medal which I feasted on just outside the Olympic village. Even Gopi Sir had it. But no not much at the moment because a lot of hard work is coming up.

My life had changed when I won the silver medal in Rio and I know what it means to my country to win a second Olympic medal. With my coaches, parents and country backing me, there is no reason why I can’t repeat what I did four years ago and, in fact, go one step ahead. It is my ultimate goal and I will do everything to

The foodie tales Hummus is one of the most famous dishes of the UAE. Made from cooked and mashed chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and salt, history tells us that the earliest known recipes for "hummus bi tahini" are recorded in 13th century cookbooks.

Melodies of some of the greatest artists and nostalgic tunes will be your companion at the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior. Memories of Tansen, one of the nine gems in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, will come alive on stage when some celebrated classical singers will perform for five days amidst the exotic Mughal architecture of Tansen's Tomb.

Standing on top of a hill, the beautiful fortress is one of the most impenetrable forts in India. Visiting the fort is like seeing India of the 6th century, as indicated by the inscriptions found inside the campus.

HISTORY

Hey, early risers, do not miss watching the sunrise in Cappadocia through a hot air balloon flight. The one-hour flight will take you over the fairy chimneys and rock-cut houses of Cappadocia.

ADVENTURE

CAPPADOCIA 82

October 2019

Castle of St. Peter or Bodrum Castle is located on a small rocky peninsula on the south-west coast of Anatolia. The castle is a classic example of Gothic architecture and consists of the French, Spanish, German, Italian and English Towers. If you wish to see approximately 249 architectural elements in one place, then you're at the right place.

Alexander the Great came to invade the city of Bodrum but could not pass through the trench in front of Myndos Gate. The place with such historical importance was the entrance gate to the ancient city of Halicarnassus on the west. It was constructed in 360 BC and has been restored recently.

The beauty of Cappadocia is not just for early risers. Some parts of Cappadocia take on red colour as the sun sets and leave you in an awe. A Quad Biking Tour is the best way to watch the sunset and views of different valleys such as Rose Valley, Red Valley, Swords Valley and the Love Valley.

Famous for its rich culinary culture, Hatay has been designated as a city of gastronomy by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. One of the many famous dishes of the place is the kebabs. They are shaped into giant patties and roasted in wood-burning ovens.

The crispy and cheese-filled dessert is known to have originated in the Palestinian city of Nablus. The dish has stretchy cheese filled between two layers of kadayif filo pastry. It can be best savoured at Cinaralti Kunefe Yusuf Usta in Hatay.

With growing environment consciousness, nowadays Durga Puja pandals have been competing to put up the most unique Pujas both in concept and execution. Words Kavita Chowdhury 84

Green Pandal

As you step into the pandal tucked in a narrow-congested lane close to the Kolkata Airport, you seem to walk inside a dense forest of overarching bamboos and cane. In between this tapestry, the curious visitor notices green paddy shoots and seasonal vegetables growing in abundance! This Durga Puja pandal of Arjunpur’s Aamra Sabai Club, promises to offer an experience quite unlike that of any other Puja in the city. It has gone to great lengths to give the place an organic feel by growing paddy, vegetables and mushroom in overhanging nests within the precinct over the past four months. Only ecofriendly materials like bamboo and cane have been used in diverse ways in this pandal; suspended cotton thread like ropes curtain off one side of it. Again, long suspended bamboo chimes create melodious music every time the visitor touches it, as does the fan like a cascade of cane. Says Asim Waqif, the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi alumnus, the creative director of this unique Puja, “Usually bamboo in Kolkata’s Puja pandals is used for the basic scaffolding and then covered up with cloth. But I have chosen to use bamboo in its raw form, used its diverse textures; the thick Raja variety has been shipped from Assam, the local thin Muli and Bhelko from Bengal has been utilised with basket weaving techniques.” For the Puja’s idol, Vietnamese artist Hoang Quet sets new standards of ecofriendliness by using the wet origami technique to create a unique Goddess made of handmade paper! Says Tamal Dutta one of the organisers, “There is

an element of social messaging through our Puja. We are hoping to impart lessons of sustainability and use of greenery in our daily lives to the community.” Another Puja pandal in the older part of the city, in North Kolkata’s Nalin Sarkar Street, now in its 87th year, has been using vegetable colours for the main Durga idol. Traditional idols use chemical colours and are especially harmful when immersed in the river.
