of Bob Dylan Known for its alluring beauty, rich cultural heritage and delicious cuisine, Almora in Uttarakhand attracted a lot of poets, mystics, bohemian artists and spiritual philosophers. Words Shreya Ganguly

When in the mountains, have you gazed all night at that last blinking light below the peak? Wondering who stays there? Painting stories of mountain leopards in their backyards, have you ever waited for them to switch off their lights before you switched off yours? Sitting around the fireplace, munching those fried snacks and humming our favourite tunes, we all are guilty of having let our imagination run wild at some point of time. Probably one of the few things that we look forward to when in the hills. Perilously hanging on the edge of a ridge, a few hundred houses dotting its perimeters, some distinctly colourful murals on their walls and a few hippies walking along its trails summarises this idyllic hamlet popularly known as Kasar Devi. The settlement gets its name from the Kasar Devi temple, which dates back to the 2nd century BC.

Poetic Connections A popular destination during the Hippie Movement of the 1960s and the 1970s, Crank’s Ridge or the Hippie Hill, which lies a little ahead of the road, attracted a lot of poets, mystics, bohemian artists and spiritual philosophers. It was Timothy Lear, an American advocate for psychedelic drugs, who had credited Kasar Devi for housing a rare cosmic energy. As per his faith in the theory of Van Allen Belt (gaps in the bands of radiation that encircle the Earth), the village is geographically placed in one such spot, therefore deeming it fit for meditation and spiritual stimulation. A theory that you would also like to believe in.

Iconic songwriter and singer Bob Dylan made multiple visits to this part of Kumaon between 1965 and 1972. He first visited the Crank's Ridge area near the Kasar Devi temple of Almora in 1965. During the evening, watch the sun melt in the distant horizon behind the vast permanence of the mountains; the sky mirroring its colours from deep indigo to gold, finally to shades of orange and pink. The ice peaks, reflecting a see-saw of moods, slowly dissolved into the night as fury and wrath crumpled into mere bliss and acceptance. Left behind is only a slender silhouette, of an open-air picture postcard framed with some stories, waiting to be told.

Walking, trekking and hiking from one place to the other is the best way to immerse in the beauty of the Kasar Devi.

Binsar is a protected wildlife sanctuary near Almora. Hitch a ride through pine, oak and rhododendron forests to Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, a few kilometres away from Kasar Devi. Hike up to Zero Point which provides for a spectacular view of the Kedarnath Peak, Shivling, Trisul and Nanda Devi. Disrupted from all forms of technology, time spent in this forest provides for a great rendezvous with a calm mind and tranquility.

Trekking Venture into the hills Trekking helps to discover an area that is remote and not served by motorable road. In India, the history of trekking dates back to ancient times as a number of religious shrine were located in hilly terrain and required trekking for a couple of days in the mountains. Puducherry is one of the only cities in India where the Dutch, Portuguese, British and French colonisers settled and proliferated. This wonderful agglomeration became the headquarters of the French East India Company in 1674. The French influence still lingers in the city where many roads and streets are named after French legends and colonialists. The town planning, including many of the colonial buildings, statues and parks takes you to a modern-day France. There are restaurants and cafes with menus in French language, serving quintessential French cuisine including the delicious quiche and the melt-inthe-mouth ĂŠclair!

Right from the architecture of houses and buildings to signboards, it’s a whole another world in itself.

In and Around Puducherry Pondicherry was planned according to the French grid structure and has perpendicular streets. Right from the architecture of houses and buildings to signboards, which are in both Tamil and French language, it’s a whole another world in itself. The villas are eminently coloured in sunburnt yellow, white and peach and ornate wooden grills of windows and doors contrast beautifully against the white columns. The colourful French houses and graffitis on the roads and the walls make this French quarter more vibrant. The best way to explore this town is on foot or on a bicycle. There are numerous charming heritage buildings that host several museums and memorials. Temples and churches dotting the city are another attraction. The Notre-Dame-des-Anges is one such church with fascinating architecture with its interiors made of eggshells in plaster. Various arts and cultural centres in the city offer some single-session activities, including learning the Tamil language,

The film Life of Pi took Puducherry’s beauty to a huge global audience. The film’s first half was shot in the town where the novel by Yann Martel is actually set. Let rivers flow freely Water is essential for humans and nature to survive. On World Rivers Day (fourth Sunday of September), let us celebrate India's valuable waterways and try to understand why rivers are so important. Words Neel Sen

52

September 2020

Rivers are vital for the existence of life on Earth. The importance of rivers is much than we recognise, ranging from the drinking water to the electricity that we use in our daily lives. Rivers provide excellent habitat and food for many of the earth's organisms and act as drainage channels for surface water. Rivers drain nearly 75% of the earth's land surface. River valleys and plains provide fertile soils. They are an important source of energy and steep rivers are used to build power hydroelectric plants and water turbines. Water also works as a great temperature regulator and keeps the temperature of Earth bearable for the species living on it. But gradually these rivers are turning into pools of sewage, toxic materials and garbage. Rapid industrialisation, population growth, and lack of efficient waste disposal systems have destroyed the sanctity of these rivers. Many of the mighty rivers have been reduced to a trickle. We are on the verge of losing them. Let's have a look at the current situation and the road ahead...

Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense." Mark Angelo

Current Scenario According to a recent assessment by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), there are 351 polluted river stretches in the country with 45 of them being critically polluted. Nearly one-third of the polluted river stretches are in Maharashtra, Assam and Gujarat. Other significant polluted stretches include the Mithi river — Powai to Dharavi; the Godavari — Someshwar to Rahed; the Sabarmati — Kheroj to Vautha; and the Hindon—Saharanpur to Ghaziabad. With nearly 70 per cent of water being contaminated, India is placed 120th amongst 122 countries in the water quality index. Alarming levels of pollutants and sewage waste are discharged into the holy Ganga River every day by over 1100 industrial units and several towns situated on its banks. The 2900-km long river and Assam’s lifeline,

Clean, safe and adequate water resources constitute a vital asset for the survival of living things. perspective. The ministry is working on an ambitious plan to provide piped water connections to every household in India by 2024. Its Namami Ganga project is set to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga. the Brahmaputra is heavily polluted. The Yamuna, which was once the lifeline of Delhi, is choking with heavy metal discharges and peak levels of Coliform, a disease-causing bacteria. The Cauvery, which originates in Karnataka before flowing to Tamil Nadu, has become a sea of sand as its riverbed is heavily encroached on both sides in several stretches. Other major rivers such as Gomti (Lucknow), Musi (Hyderabad), Ulhas (Thane and Raigad districts in Maharashtra), and Cooum river (Chennai) are having the similar fate.

The National Water Policy includes enhanced storage both above and below ground, rainwater harvesting, coupled with equitable and efficient management structures. Its key areas are: • Management of surface water resources, • Management and regulation of ground water resources, • Upgrading storage structures for fresh and drainage system for wastewater, • Conservation of wetland, and • Development of desalination technologies.

According to the Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) report released by the Niti Aayog in 2018, by 2030 the country's water demand is projected to be twice the available supply, implying severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people and an eventual six per cent loss in the country's GDP.

Rivers are regulators of the earth’s carbon cycle. Free-flowing rivers help recharging groundwater, nourishing productive deltas and farmland, and allowing migratory fish populations to thrive. On this Rivers' Day, let us take a pledge to maintain our rivers and watersheds and help them flow freely and cleanly.

Silver lining Clean, safe and adequate water resources constitute a vital asset for the survival of living things and smooth functioning of major systems, and economic development. To achieve this, a new Ministry (Jal Shakti) has been formed by the Union Government, which aims at tackling water issues with a holistic and integrated

Eco-restoration and conservation of

Sikanderpur Pond area

Before

The Sikanderpur Pond has always been a cesspool of sewage, with wastewater coming from the neighbouring areas. It has also been a garbage dumping site covered completely with water hyacinths and other invasive plants. The cleaning work is in progress and over 150

truckloads of plastic waste and garbage have been taken out and sent to other landfill sites. The construction and debris waste on-site will be recycled for restoration. Once completed, the area would be a transformed spot, visually appealing, and ecologically healthy. This project, implemented in partnership with the organisations, I am Gurgaon and SURGE would greatly benefit the neighbouring residents and people commuting to use the nearby metro trains.

After

As part of one of our CSR works on environment, we have undertaken a project on eco-restoration and conservation of the watershed area and water body at Sikanderpur, Gurugram, Haryana.
