Welcome to the first issue of the year of VFS Global COMPASSTM, created exclusively for our customers visiting VFS Global Visa Application Centres. Are you getting ready for the summer holiday season? Travellers from across the world have already begun making plans as they gear up for the peak summer holidays. At VFS Global, the comfort of our customers remains a top priority – our teams worldwide are focused on maintaining heightened service levels during the summer rush and assisting customers with a smooth start to their journeys. Don’t miss top visa application tips on how to beat the peak and enjoy a smooth visa application process, irrespective of which part of the world you are travelling to.

Zubin Karkaria CEO, VFS Global Group

Our cover story features one of India’s most popular actors, Akshay Kumar who is well-known internationally for his blockbuster films, as well for his passion with social issues. Canada, where the actor spent many formative years, is also featured here – the country’s eclectic culture and bountiful natural beauty make it a popular destination especially during the summer months. Do read the interview with the Ambassador of Lithuania to India, His Excellency Mr. Julius Pranevičius, who speaks about the immense tourism potential of his country and elaborates on the many reasons you will enjoy visiting Lithuania. 2020 is also packed with top-tier events such as Expo 2020 Dubai, the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, and the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, giving travellers an opportunity to combine tourism with attending these incredible, once in a way events. Remember, through your travels, it is also important to safeguard your most valuable asset – your personal data. Be sure to go through tips offered by our in-house data protection expert Barry Cook on how you can keep your personal data safe while on the move. We also received an overwhelming response to the travel photo contest we featured in one of our previous issues – we thank our contributors for the beautiful images of tourist spots featured here. Please do feel free to take this issue home for a more leisurely read. I wish you an excellent travel experience – wherever you may be headed!

guide to visa application Travel Tips As every journey begins with VFS Global, here are a few travel-related tips that could be helpful while preparing for your trip:

Don’t Just Scan the Weather When researching your preferred destination, it is important to read up on travel advisories on respective country websites. You will find useful information on what to do in the event of an emergency. Supposedly if you need to be evacuated from the country While risks can be in the form of natural disasters or political unrest, always ensure you follow general safety precautions as well as be mindful of the local cultural sensitivities.

Be Financially Prepared

each vacation or a mountain getaway,

the excitement of going on a holiday is often marred by the stress of last-minute planning amidst the rush of the peak

the date of travel? Just like you apply in advance to watch the latest movie at cinemas, why wait till the last minute when you can apply early?

travel season.

Visa application is an important aspect of this planning, but it doesn’t have to be as stressful as some imagine if you plan well. Keep in mind these handy tips for a smart, stress-free and on-time visa application experience!

Beat the Peak! Be the early bird Did you know that most countries accept visa applications up to 90 days before

Know visa turnaround time It’s peak season and a common concern is wondering how long visa processing will take, especially when your travel dates are nearing. While VFS Global ensures that your official documents are passed on to the concerned consulate/embassy within 24 hours of submission, it is important to know that each country has a different timeline for its visa processing. During peak season, visa processing at Embassy/

Consulate can take longer than the turnaround times mentioned. These timelines are clearly mentioned on the country-specific websites (accessed via www.vfsglobal.com). Apply accordingly and save yourself from the anxiety.

Check the checklist A checklist of the documentation required for visa applications for each country served by VFS Global is available on www. vfsglobal.com. Refer to this and be sure to carry all the requisite documentation to submit along with the duly filled application form. Also, check your passport’s validity.

It is advisable to keep local currency handy for all emergency purposes during your trip. This will also take the stress out of your local market visits where card transactions are not possible. And before you swipe your debit and credit cards, familiarise yourself with your bank’s service charge and mark-up amount on the conversion rate. You can avoid higher currency rates at airports by getting your currency changed from a local bank or authentic moneychanger.

Stay Connected Before embarking on your trip, save all your important phone numbers. Call your network provider to set up roaming to ensure you can communicate if you are out of a Wi-Fi network. Update your banking apps, download translation apps and find out about e-hailing services in your destination country so you can download the app in advance.

Be Ready With Health Documents

Many countries require a valid passport six months beyond your return date.

Check services* that can ease the process From applying for a visa from your location of choice (the Visa At Your Doorstep service) to enjoying personalised assistance while submitting applications (in the Premium Lounge), or walk-in services for those without appointments or formfilling support – optional services, available at an extra fee, can be provided customised to your visa requirement.

For any urgent travel or if you have missed your pre-booked appointment, or simply cannot book an appointment at your preferred date and time, Prime Time Appointment* service allows you to book an appointment outside the normal working hours in select centres.

Track your application Once your application is submitted, you can track the progress through VFS Global’s online tracking service. The status will be updated as and when your passport is ready for collection/delivery.

Health requirements are not to be taken lightly as you don’t want to be turned away at immigration because you’ve flouted a country’s travel health code. To enter certain countries, travellers may need vaccinations or medical requirements for entry.

Be on time

Constantly changing travel requirements may seem cumbersome, but proper research on your destination is never a waste! So what are you waiting for?

are not compelled to subscribe to them. These services do not affect the processing time or

We highly recommend you to reach at least 15 minutes prior to the appointed time to avoid missing your slot.

Please note once your application reaches the Embassy, VFS Global has no influence on its progress and cannot track the status at this stage.

*Please note that services mentioned above are optional and available for an extra fee. Customers decision of your visa, which remains the sole prerogative of the Embassy/ Consulate. *Some of the above-mentioned services may not be offered in some countries, or for specific missions/embassies/consulates. End of acting lesson. What?! “Yeah,” he grins easily. “I’ve never looked back since. I know it might sound cocky, but I don’t need anyone else to tell me I’m a good person. I always try really hard to make sure I am (good) to everyone who crosses my path.” If it had come from any other star, most people would have dismissed it as self-gloating boasts. But with Akshay, you know he walks his talk. Unlike most Bollywood stars he has never shied away from loosening the purse strings while spreading goodwill, or talking about causes close to his heart. From starting a 30-bed hospice for cancer-stricken policemen and contributing `5 million to Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation, to donating `9 million to drought-hit farmers and an additional `5 million to drought-affected people, Akki is even known to have given to charity half of the mind-boggling fee he

earned for endorsing a brand. In a country that is obsessed with Bollywood, where actors are considered as role models, he’s quick to debunk a notion that most stars tend to perpetuate. “Follow your dreams, and not your idols,” he says measuredly. “Even heroes make mistakes.”

QUICK TAKES: Sun or snow? Snow, with bright sunshine. Like in Canada Mountains or beaches? Mountains Relaxation or adventure? A mix of both. For me, adventure is relaxation. But family getaways are mostly relaxed. Countryside or city lights? I like places that have scenic beauty as well as great outdoor sports or activity facilities. This could be in a village, in a city or anywhere else. Wildlife or nightlife? Definitely, wildlife! Nightlife won’t allow me to wake up on time in the mornings and my mornings are very important to me. Shopping: High street, Couture or Bargains? Ask Twinkle that! (Laughs) I find it hard to remember brand names!

that kind of adulation from people, it is a shame if I can’t use it for something more positive. I don’t know if I will be able to inspire people or change thinking, but I can try to tell them ki dekho tumhara hero yeh keh raha hai (See this is what your hero is asking you to do). Maybe a few will actually listen,” says Akshay.

He is also aware that as a public figure, he has responsibilities. “In our vast and diverse country, it is impossible to change everything in just one go. It took years to pile up the garbage, so obviously, nothing can change in one day. What we can do is hope that people become sensitive and intelligent enough to understand this. I do my own work, by putting up small videos, where I ask people to think about our country. I never criticise them. When people think of their family and friends, so why not for their own country? I have a responsibility as a public figure. I think of my growing up years when hamein lagta tha ki hero toh sab kuch kar sakta hai (we felt that a hero can do anything and everything). So if I have Feb-Apr 2020 / 15

Cover story Know Akshay Better According to Forbes, he is the 4th highest paid actor in Bollywood with a worth of $32 million. Wherever he may be, his workout routine is inflexible. He wakes up at 4am every morning to run, practices martial arts and other fitness routine but avoids weightlifting. Akshay Kumar treasures his first watch as well as bike and still has them.

Kashmir - I love the views and the peace and calm at all these places.

What’s your favourite food destination and cuisine?

Japan is on Akshay’s wishlist

In these times of cynicism, he encourages his fans to focus on the positive. “Even when the negative is slapping you in the face, don’t let it affect you. When days are dark, follow the light, don’t fixate on the dark. You find your neighbourhood dirty, try and do something about it. Talking about a problem is just whining. Take charge!” says the action star. But here are a few things about the way Akshay Kumar holidays that will convince you that there is much more to him than being just an action star.

How do you spend your holidays? I try to spend every waking hour with my wife and kids, even substituting as their butler, driver, clown, cook and tour guide sometimes! (laughs) We toured Italy’s mountains and lakes, with the odd waterfall here and there. We then jumped across the pond to New York, our regular holiday destination with best friends and family. The Bhatias/Kumars/Khannas are absolute legends on holiday! We make the most of every day, and don’t sit down until we fall down! And we centre everything around the kids, the happier they are the better the survival rate of each adult will be.

Your idea of a perfect holiday? Thanks to my career, travelling has always been a part of life. Spending time together as a family is my trump card in this notoriously fickle industry. As a family, we spend multiple vacations together every year, including one lengthy summer holiday. I am a big fan of the family vacation. I urge every working person to take time away from their jobs and spend quality time with their families. They are also the most important memories in any household.

What are your favourite destinations? I enjoy mountains and cold climates. New York has always been one of my favourite family holiday destinations, especially during the summer season. We do a lot of family activities there that’s otherwise difficult in India; little joys of life like going to the park with my kids. Canada, of course, because my son and I both love the mountains. In India, it is Goa, Kerala and

If food is a yardstick for choosing a holiday, I will probably never get out of home. Give me a bowl of fresh and hot khichdi and I am the happiest man! Apart from home food, I love Japanese cuisine. Japan is definitely on my wish list; I haven’t been there yet.

Any memorable travel experiences? Several of them! But just randomly, I do remember this big fat Punjabi family holiday in Canada some years ago. We were staying at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler in Vancouver. I found the place very child-friendly — they had no problems with kids running around in their ski boots. The staff brought out hot chocolate with marshmallows for my son while he was paddling in the hot tubs — and he was quite thrilled.

What would you like to say to a first-time traveller? Be adventurous only when you have family or friends with you. Stay safe. That, and also meet as many local people as possible. Live their life and you will have the best holiday.

Which are some destinations that you would like to travel to? The Poles, maybe. Russia too. In India, I would like to explore the eastern part of our country. As told to Aarti Kapur Singh

Olomouc, Czech Republic This tiny charming town in the Czech Republic is still a hidden gem in Central Europe. You can find cobblestones alleys, Baroque churches in almost every corner, fountains and castles in only one place. Some people dare to say it is a small and unknown version of Prague, but both cities are stunning and different. You can rent ATVs from Vazeos to explore the entire island by buggy or go for wine tasting at Santos Winery, Gavalas Winery and Venesantos Winery. So, an easy escape to Nikko, less than two hours north by train, can be a worthy choice. A beautiful, historic and peaceful place, Nikko has an incredible history as it is the location of important Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The town and nearby Lake Chuzenji are part of a national park that is well preserved, with scores of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Lions and cheetahs, too, are back, and in November 2019, 17 black rhinos were relocated to Liwonde from South Africa to encourage population growth. Malawi is also home to the fourth

largest freshwater lake in the world (by volume), Lake Malawi. This lake is home to more species of fish than any other lake in the world.

Medal design for Tokyo 2020 Olmpics

Are there any changes to the Olympics this year? The biggest change to the Olympics 2020 is the addition of the five new sports and the return of baseball (absent in 2016), plus a few new events, like the three-onthree basketball competition. One change that is sure to receive a lot of attention is the adjusted gymnastics team rules: instead of fielding a team of five athletes, each country will be whittled down to four all-around contestants, with two more teammates added to compete only in individual events.

The Tokyo2020 Summer Olympics – July 24 to August 9 – will award medals across 339 events, representing 33 different sports. Five new sports have been introduced – baseball/softball, skate-boarding, surfing, sport climbing and karate, while others, like basketball, see the inclusion of new events within the discipline. Nothing has been dropped since 2016, which also saw the return of golf and rugby.

more fun than television, there can be nothing better than watching an Olympic event live. A platform where athletes showcase the best to excel in every genre, this year the Summer Olympics is being held in Tokyo, Japan. It’s the second time that Tokyo is hosting a Summer Olympics, 56 years after they held it for the first time in 1964.

What’s new about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Medals? The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games made an announcement of being environmentfriendly and being carbon-free. The electronics recycling programme saw them initiate a collection drive of massive numbers of small electronic devices such as used mobile phones to mould the medals this season. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be the first edition of the Summer Olympics to have the involvement of the host city population for the manufacturing of the medals, which used recycled metals in their core.

Official Mascots of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics The official mascots of the Tokyo Summer and Paralympic Games are Miraitowa and Someity, created by Japanese artist Ryo Taniguchi who beat competition from all over the country to have his final designs selected from a field of 2,042 submissions. Miraitowa, the Summer Olympic Games mascot, is designed as a combination

of Ai (Indigo Blue) Ichimatsu pattern of the Tokyo 2020 Emblem, which is a tribute to the modern innovation and respected tradition of the famed Japanese culture. The name ‘Miraitowa’ is derived as a combination of the Japanese word ‘Mirai’, which means ‘Future’, and ‘Towa’ meaning ‘Eternity’. The character is described as being very athletic with a strong sense of justice.

The final design of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics Games medals was finalised after the organising committee launched a nationwide design competition.

Picturesque architecture, gorgeous beach, or lip smacking food – these destinations give a new dimension to a romantic holiday

W

ho does not want a holiday where the sand is swept away from beneath you by the waves that kiss your feet, or one where you are surrounded by natures green canopy while you stand hand-in-hand with your soul mate. From exploring the cultural side of Morocco to hiking and biking in Argentina, couples today are giving new dimensions to a romantic holiday.

Morocco While the city marches to its own beat, Marrakech in Morocco is the go-to destination for couples across the globe. They can pamper each other with gifts from the local markets, spend time at the famous mini Medina or gaze at the gorgeous sunset which outlines the Koutoubia Mosque. Morocco can be best explored while relishing the local delicacies. Besides

at modernist architecture. For couples interested in art, a visit to the renowned Escadaria Selaron is a must as it holds the treasure of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron. These 215 steps, covered in bright tile, is a product of sheer determination by Selarón and a source of inspiration for the neighbourhood.

Italy this Chefchaoun is the location for perfect photographs, experiencing a camel ride in the Sahara at sunset, hiking in the Atlas mountains and bathing in Hammam are meant to be on the to-do list.

Chic villas, divine food, wine and a breathtaking view is what Italy is all about. Venice, Rome, Florence are considered holy places by the lovestrucks. While being in the city of Venice all one could think of romancing the French way while walking over more

than 350 bridges in the city and admire the reflection of the elegant buildings in the water of the canals. Synonymous with the romance of Cleopatra and Ceaser, Rome has many locations where you can enjoy a beautiful day with your loved one. Toss coins together at Trevi Fountain, a romantic carriage ride through the city centre, cruise along the Tiber or tour the Vatican museums, Rome is no short of choices.

Argentina Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, at the tip of Argentina, is the perfect destination for couples who love the outdoors and exploring as it offers plenty

Brazil Brazil is all about fun and carnival but it is also one of the most romantic destinations in the world. For couples, the itinerary should include basking in the sun on the beaches of Fernando de Noronha, getting close to nature while exploring the Amazon, standing hand-in-hand while watching the Iguazu Waterfalls. The globetrotters could check out the cobbled streets traversing the coastal towns or head directly to the famous Bairro of Copacabana of Rio de Janeiro. Other attractions include Christ the Redeemer, a photographers’ delight, a visit to the Cathedral of Brasilia for glancing

of activities to do together. You can opt for a skiing in the woods around the town or experience the thrill of being pulled through the Lenga forest by Siberian huskies. Then there is the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse painted in red and white stripes and perched on an island in the middle of the Beagle Channel. There really is no other lighthouse in the world as this one. Ushuaia is also the place that has been passed through by legends like Charles Darwin, Ferdinand Magellan and Francis Drake. Give yourself some history lesson at the Museum of Tierra del Fuego and know about the explorers, routes they undertook etc.

The Maldives Couple enjoying a camel ride in Morocco

Stretches of white, powdery beaches surrounding crystalline waters, shallow atolls surrounded by the ocean, coral reefs perfect for snorkelling and diving… there’s no end to the must-do sights or attractions in the Maldives. An archipelago that includes over 1,150 islands and sandbanks, the Maldives is widely dispersed but has less than 400,000 permanent inhabitants, making it one of the world’s 25 least inhabited countries. Surf the waves, go snorkel with some of the biggest marine creatures, watch the dolphins as they cross channels from one atoll to another, and make memories. Feb-Apr 2020 / 35

leisure Big Little Lies ( HBO)

Lose track of time …

While on the move Must-watch award-winning shows to help you during those long hours of travelling Words: Vinod Advani

After the unexpected success of Season 1, a follow-up was to be expected by this family drama even though the plotlines here are not as taut and tense as before. The bonus this time is the addition of Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) as the mother-in-law of Celeste (Nicole Kidman), who won’t accept that her dead son was abusive and violent. Still, the viewing quotient of this Golden Globe-nominated series remains high. The characters of Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz remain as flawed as ever, drawing our sympathy. I couldn’t help but think about the lessons that parents must learn about not to mess up their children’s lives. But the question of murder is yet to be answered or solved?

I Love You, Now Die! (HBO/Hotstar) A true-crime story presented by HBO/Hotstar talks about the time where technology has taken over love letters in a relationship. Teenagers Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy met and fell in love in July. They met only five times but exchanged thousands of text messages. Both came from comfortable middle-class backgrounds but had one thing in common: depression. Two years later, in 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy killed himself and Michelle aged 17, was arrested for driving him to suicide. Can one be convicted of manslaughter by simply encouraging someone to kill themself? Can words stand in for actions, even though Carter was not physically present to help Roy?

Rake (Netflix) The world is just catching up with these comical five seasons made in Australia without clichés that animates life’s serious situations. This is wittily written and beautifully portrayed series for the discerning viewer. Right from the first scene, you will fall in love with the main character Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh), a lawyer with no scruples or morals, who can sleep with his best friend’s wife and then wonder what the fuss is all about. Cleaver’s addictive actions create situations that have ripple effects on everyone around him, even potential prime ministers! With not a single dud episode, this is probably one of the binge-worthy TV shows ever.

Unbelievable (Netflix) Eight episodes that weave eight lives damaged by rape gives you an inside on this thrill ride brought to you by Netflix. The first episode of this Golden Globe-nominated series unfolds the story of an orphan young girl named Marie (Kaitlyn Dever) who reports about being raped. But due to intense police questioning, she gets frightened and recants her story pleading saying she made it up. Soon, similar rape incidents of young women in different cities in the USA, start being reported with the rapist using identical methods to perpetrate the crime. Two female detectives (Merritt Wever and Toni Collete) start connecting the dots.

The Crown (Netflix) The fascination with the lives of aristocrats and royals continues unabated globally in this drama series. After the global success of ‘Downtown Abbey’ series, the stakes are stoked with this series for which Olivia Colman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of an older Queen Elizabeth. Gawp at the real-life story of Queen Elizabeth II, still alive, still Queen of Great Britain after 66 years of sitting on the throne. Season 3 is out and is as riveting as the first two seasons. We now begin to understand why Princess Margaret (the Queen’s late sister) lived so recklessly and why Prince Charles never loved the iconic Princess Diana.

MotherFatherSon (BBC) What happens when you have so much power that you can actually replace the Prime Minister of your country? Machiavellian and manipulative Max Finch (Richard Gere) has everyone in his country wired up without anyone suspecting him in this mystery and drama show. Except for his son Caden (Billy Howle) who has been doing his dad’s dirty deeds but has been conditioned since childhood to keep it all zipped up. Caden’s unbearable secrets implode into a stroke through an overdose of cocaine and alcohol. That’s when estranged mum Kate (Helen Mccrory), steps in for son’s rehabilitation and all the demented excesses come tumbling out of Pandora’s box. Feb-Apr 2020 / 37

Cityscape

The reconstruction of the choir started in 1176 and nearly 300 years later, the steeple arose in 1439. Its height of 142m classified Notre-Dame of Strasbourg as the tallest edifice in Christendom up until the 19th century. The richly ornate main facade has three portals dedicated to the life and Passion of Christ. In a frame of stone, delicately ornamented with openwork, blooms a 1318 AD magnificent rose window. Above it, two towers connected by the belfry, constructed only at the end of the 14th century, compose the platform. From this height, after having climbed the 329 stairs, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings. Huff, puff, but what a view!

2000 years of history

Set in the Grand Est region of Europe, Strasbourg excudes youthfulness and energy, which fits perfectly with travellers who have a taste for art and history Words: Vinod Advani

S

trasbourg was born twice! First more than 2000 years ago, as a Roman military outpost called Argentoratum on an island ‘Grande Ile’ on the Ill River. It became a crossroad for tourists travelling between France and Germany and since then its name changed to Strasbourg, meaning ‘a town of crossing streets’. Connected to its surrounding banks by 21 bridges and footbridges, its unique architectural heritage- a product of Latin and Germanic culturesfeatures a high-quality collection of monuments.

On the ground floor, the Museum of Decorative Arts was the former residence of the Prince-Bishops, built

around 1742. It is composed of two sections: the sumptuous apartments of the cardinals, and a panorama of Strasbourg’s decorative arts of the period stretching from 1681 to the middle of the 19th century (world-famous Hannong ceramics, furniture, sculpture and painting, time-pieces, ironwork, pewterware and mesmerising gold and silver work). On the first floor is the Museum of Fine Arts. It features a beautiful collection of Italian, French, Spanish, Flemish and Dutch paintings, ranging in date from the 14th century to 1870. The collection includes works of famous European masters like Giotto, Botticelli, Raphael, Le Correge, El Greco, Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, etc.

Petite France A haven of peace in the heart of the city, this quartier comes alive at night with locals and tourist throbbing pubs and bars. With its narrow roads and half-timbered houses reflected in the gently flowing

canals, this is the most picturesque part of the old town. Most of the houses date back to the 16th and 17th centuries and are generally structured in the same way: above the ground floor are two halftimbered floors with large sloping roofs opening onto lofts where animal hides were dried.

Foie gras and Sauerkraut Foie gras (which was invented in Strasbourg around 1780) and sauerkraut (traditional or with fish) are the two centre-pieces of Alsatian cuisine. Other mouth-watering delicacies include Beckeoffe (a mix of marinated beef, mutton and pork in white wine), the Tarte flambee (thin crust covered with cream, bacon and onions), coq au Riesling, boiled or grilled pork shank, bibeleskas (whipped cream cheese with garlic, onion, parsley and chive seasoning, served with fried potatoes). Enjoy feasting in this gorgeous city.

Petite Venice and traditional half timbered houses

Then came ‘Neustadt’- the new town of Strasbourg, built from nothing between 1871 and 1914 after the Prussian annexation, tripling the city’s surface area. The exceptional quality of the architecture and urban planning integrates beautifully into a set of wide-open views of artfully designed landscaping. Today, the entire area of ‘Strasbourg, Grande Ile and Neustadt’ proudly bears the inscription of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Cathedral Victor Hugo called it ‘a prodigy of the gigantic and of the delicate’. The Strasbourg Cathedral stands on a wide cobblestone square from the Middle Ages. Underneath are the foundations of an old Roman basilica constructed in 1015 which, unfortunately, got burned. Feb-Apr 2020 / 39

Lithuania A nation close to

nature, full of wonders H.E. Mr. Julius Pranevičius, Ambassador of Lithuania to India, speaks at length about the immense tourism potential of his country and elaborates on the many reasons to visit Lithuania. Excerpts of the interview: Do you find Lithuania growing in popularity among Indian travellers? Which are the top favourite tourist attractions?

Lithuanian part of Curonian Spit

In the first half of 2019, the tourism growth was almost 10 per cent. Great progress has been made in attracting tourists from far-away markets mainly from China and Japan. Lithuania is a unique destination, tourists from India now are looking for unique places and find the destination to be a perfect fit for that, hence the potential is very high. Those who wish to explore more are impressed by Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Its historical centre is included in UNESCO World Heritage Site list and its stunning medieval and baroque architecture rivals the sans pareil in Europe. There’s Trakai Castle - a beautiful medieval castle that sits on an island in the centre of Lake Galve. If you need to visit more than just architectures, there’s no better place than the Curonian Spit. This peninsula with amazing sand dunes is located between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian lagoon. It has been listed as a place you must see before you die in the travel book - 1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz and included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in Europe. The Hill of Crosses also leaves a

and Lithuania to a fairy tale, thanks to the abundance of enchanting landscape. The official geographical centre of Europe is 26 kilometres away from the Vilnius which means being here is equivalent to travelling to the centre of the earth. For add on, hot-air balloon ride above Vilnius should be included in this special trip.

H.E. Mr. Julius Pranevičius, Ambassador of Lithuania to India

With a country where there is no hills, our pagan forefathers had to find creative ways to worship gods. Thus, they created their own mountains,‘Hillforts’, 900 of them scattered around the country. Each of them is like a treasury of legends, folk stories and history.

It is important to build on this existing link between our countries with present-day exchanges, cooperation and relationship. Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary was celebrated in Lithuania. His soulmate Hermann Kallenbach was born in our country. There is a monument reminding about their friendship in a small town close . to Baltic Sea, Rusne, which is often visited by tourists from India.

Lithuania is a destination full of beautiful landscapes comprising enchanting castles, dunes, forests, lakes and more. On top of it, the country’s fresh air, clean water, the slow pace of life and friendly people make Lithuania anideal destination for discerning travellers.

for a visa at VFS Global Visa Center in their preferred location. Visa processing will take two weeks maximum, though we encourage everyone to apply as much in advance as possible to ease the planning of the trip. If tourists want to explore more of Europe, it is possible to fly directly to Helsinki and then tour by road or air through the Baltic States ending the trip in Warsaw, from where you can fly back directly to India (or vice versa). You can tick boxes of 5 visited countries in one trip!

A land of stunning architecture and landscapes •

In light of the growing demand of Indian tourists to travel to Lithuania, in 2019, three Visa Application Centres were opened in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru to facilitate the visa application process for tourists. More such centres where citizens can apply for the Lithuanian Schengen visa are planned to open. So, really there are no more reasons to delay the trip to Lithuania, explore and experience all it has to offer yourself!

The Curonian Spit, with its southern part in Russia and the northern in southwestern Lithuania, also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes in Europe. Located in Northern Lithuania, the Hill of Crosses is an awe-inspiring and mysterious site for tourists.

This is my second year in India. I try to use every opportunity to travel and discover new places in India with my family. Though it seems like I have seen a lot, India, being such a diverse country doesn’t fail to astonish me ever. I have three kids and we love being in nature, so whenever possible, we try to leave Delhi to go to the hills for a hike. During winters we like going to the Indian seashore and enjoy tranquility at the beach and lots of fresh seafood. Feb-Apr 2020 / 43

Give For

VFS Global employees from five cities in Canada collected winter coats, clothing, shoes and toys in support of children from Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Good At VFS Global, we believe giving is not about making a donation, but making a difference!

Furthering this thought, our Champions of Change undertook a month-long campaign to work with their local communities in an effort to ‘Give for Good’. VFS Global employees from over 55 cities across the world, engaged in more than 20 initiatives to collect essentials like food, clothing, toiletries, school supplies, etc. for donation and also raised funds for local charities. More than 700 employees from some of these locations volunteered their time at local orphanages, public schools, children’s hospitals and pet shelters clocking over 2500 hours of service serving thousands of beneficiaries across 40 institutions.

In line with the national agenda of ‘Swachh Bharat: Swachh Vidyalaya’, our committed Champions of Change in India took up school transformation drives in public schools across five cities, in an effort to make the campuses more conducive for learning.
