Luckily though, Prague also boasts of a lot of secret spots often excluded out of a visitor’s to-do list while in the city.

Alternative Art In the post-communist years, Prague has seen an explosion of expressive and unusual contemporary art to match the free spirits of the times. In the neighbourhood of Smichov, artists have transformed abandoned buildings into multi-purpose art spaces. Try David Cenry’s eclectic Meetfactory, a renovated factory that now hosts projects of all imaginable kinds – whether getting inked in a temporary tattoo

workshop or learning to screen print your own designs, you’re in for an adventure.

Other Smichov venues worth checking out are avant-garde theatre Svandovo Divadlo and the trendy new Radlicka 125, another warehouse that hosts everything from fashion shows to bike-painting lessons.

For a slightly less interactive experience, see what’s on display at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Holesovice, or head to galleryNoD in Old Town for your coffee and culture fix. Kampa Park is home to three bronze babies, and the nearby Kafka Museum has the not-so-child-friendly “Piss” sculpture.

Flea Markets

reserve of Divoká Šárka. Named after a mythic female warrior - Wild Šárka who seduced the warrior Ctirad in order to beat the male tribe – this park is big enough for hiking or biking. Climb some of the small, steep hills to get an amazing view of the valley and city. In winter, hiking and cross country skiing are ideal here and there are no crowds. Blanketed in snow, Divoká Šárka has a fairy-tale-like atmosphere and is quiet and peaceful.

Jazz scene Prague’s Jazz scene is a colourful and varied one but unfortunately not so well known by the city’s visitors. There are several good old jazz clubs that provide live music in a great bohemian atmosphere. Visit Agharta, just off the Old Town Square, for a great ambience

and superb acoustics. The musical style is broad, covering jazz, blues, funk and swing. History lovers should check Reduta, one of Prague’s oldest and most well-known jazz clubs, it is famous for the ‘Two Presidents’ gig that featured Bill Clinton on the saxophone.

Sapa Vietnamese Market Prague’s Vietnamese market, a maze of food stalls and tacky treasures on the outskirts of Prague 4, is great for a day of meandering. On a sunny day, and especially if that day is over the weekend, a visit to Sapa can really feel like a visit to another country. Shoppers can grab a bowl of pho or cup of bubble tea before perusing endless shelves of novelty items for affordable accessories and unusual souvenirs.

The flea markets here have a lot of great memorabilia, cheap second-hand items, and even Bohemian crystal to offer. The flea market at U Elektry Street, the largest flea market in Europe with a total area of 50,000 sq m, is a treasure trover of Bohemian glass, porcelain, Soviet-era medals and even jewellery.

The Klementinum Antique Market -open only on Sundays – is known for mysterious, shiny and beautiful antique goods. A(void), a flea market located on a boat permanently ankled on the riverbank Naplavka, is a place for smaller treasures, if you’re looking for jewellery, old watches, vintage clothes, bags and household items.

of Muscat, the Grand Mosque of Sultan Qaboos, is a marvel in itself. Gifted by Sultan Qaboos to celebrate the 30th year of his reign, it can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. The main hall is done up with Turkish mosaic, Italian marble, French stained-glass windows and has a glittery 1,200-lamp chandelier. Have lunch in the nearby Bedouin-cultured garden of the Kargeen Caffe in Madinat Qaboos.

Evening To know about the history and culture, head to the national museum: Bait AlZubair. Though it's a privately funded enterprise, it serves as a repository for the diversity of Omani culture. You can learn about everything from Bedouin traditions to colonialism through its fine collection of household items, weapons and costumes. For dinner, try anything from prawn, Hamour, or chicken biryani from the nearby restaurants. Being a port city, fish is easily available here.

Day 2 Morning Head to the Mutrah Port early today to catch the first glimpse of fish being delivered to the market. Despite being the capital's main port area, Mutrah feels more like a fishing village. Take a short walk along the bay and you will arrive in the old souk of Muscat. Housed between two towering, sandstone gates, the streets of this traditional market are sheltered from the sun with carved timber roofs and stained-glass domes. As you move inside the market, the fragrance of saffron, cardamom and dried lime imbues the air.

Wander the streets and shop for scarves, silver and Omani halwa, a jelly-like sweet flecked with nuts and flavoured with rose.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi (LAD) is truly an inspirational “gift to the world”. The opening of the museum in November will surely mark a monumental moment in the history of the UAE as well as the art world. Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel has designed a museum city under a vast silvery dome. Visitors can walk through the promenades overlooking the sea beneath the museum’s 180-metre dome, comprised of almost 8,000 unique metal stars set in a complex geometric pattern.

A dream come true The Louvre is not actually a museum, but an island of museums. To be precise, it is an amalgation of desert sand, water, the sea and its horizons.

The venture was first announced in 2007 and the LAD is one of four star architect-designed museums that will open on Saadiyat Island, a 27 sq km peninsula off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

Frank Gehry’s striking design for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Pritzker prize-winning architectural firm Foster + Partners’ Zayed National Museum are also making themselves ready, alongside a number of high-end retail, hotel and residential developments.

Notable works of art

Jean Nouvel, the architect of LAD, says: “It is an architecture that is protective of its treasures, it is a homage to the Arab city, to its poetry in geometry and light, and, under the large cupola, it is an evocation of the temporalities which inexorably punctuate the hours, days and the passing of our lives.”

When it comes to the collections, the curators have pulled together a commendable job. The museum’s permanent galleries will present alongside the museum’s own collection of some 300 works from 13 key French institutions.

Vincent van Gogh is among the most influential figures in the history of Western art. The Dutch artist painted dozens of self-portraits, which were a crucial part of his oeuvre as an artist.

The rain of light is the product of an intricate 180-metre-wide, 12,000-tonne, 400,000-part canopy whose complexity derives directly from Nouvel’s desire to create just such an effect.

Crooked streets lined with dilapidated mansions painted ochre and blue, higgledy piggledy staircases and rickety balconies, grape vines creeping over the trellis.

Many of the houses have large, sprawling courtyards where children play, which are interconnected with the next house, dotted with mulberry trees and festooned with lines of drying laundry, that hark back to community living in the past.

That’s Old Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, tucked between Russia and Turkey, which is a patchwork of architectural styles, from Art Nouveau buildings to Gothic and Baroque churches and stark Soviet architecture. For an architecture buff like me, the main attraction is its eclectic architecture reflecting its location at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Though decades of neglect, earthquakes and Soviet rule have taken its toll on many buildings, there are still a few that are worth visiting.

Marvels of architecture When you step in Tbilisi, the first thing that will catch your attention is the delicately

carved and filigreed wooden and wrought iron balconies, often called the hallmark of this city. These overhanging balconies were constructed to offer a respite to the locals from the summer heat.

In the Abanotubani or the Bath districts are the brick-domed sulphur baths that have been used by people for ages. These baths were built in Persian style with colourful glazed tiles. Scattered around old town are caravanserais where the traders on the Silk Route camped in the past with their caravans and camels. Today, some of these magnificent buildings have been restored meticulously, like the one that houses the Tbilisi Museum of History.

The city is home to several exquisite Or thodox churches with beautiful frescoes and ceilings, gilded icons and altars. Rustaveli Avenue is the Champs Elysee of Tbilisi, with stately neo-classical palaces and buildings lining the length.

Many heritage homes and buildings in Tbilisi have gone under the bulldozer, in the construction boom, but in recent years there is a lot of awareness to conserve old architecture. One successful restoration project that I see is on David Agmashenebeli Avenue. Tbilisi has a wealth of urban architecture and concerted efforts have to be made to preserve it in the years to come.

Fresh lease of life Urban renewal has given a fresh lease of life to many run-down buildings. A case in point is Fabrika, an old Soviet-era sewing factory, that has been converted into a 400-room hostel decorated with wall murals, with quirky art and craft shops as well as a cafĂŠ. Another great restoration is CafĂŠ Littera, which is an old Art Deco mansion from 1903 that belonged to a Georgian philanthropist. The show

Tbilisi also has its share of modern architecture. There is the much-maligned bow shaped Peace Bridge designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, which the locals detest because it is discordant with the old architecture. I also see the

‫أصبحت الكثير من المباني اآليلة للسقوط ترفل في حلة‬ ‫جديدة بعد أن خضعت ألعمال الصيانة والترميم‪ ،‬على غرار‬ ‫مبني “فابريكا”‪ ،‬الموروث عن حقبة االتحاد السوفييتي‪،‬‬ ‫وهو عبارة عن مصنع للخياطة قبل أن يتم تحويله إلى‬ ‫فندق يتكون من ‪ 400‬غرفة‪ ،‬مزدان باللوحات الجدارية‬ ‫واألعمال الفنية كما تتوفر فيه محالت المنتجات الحرفية‪،‬‬ ‫إضافة إلى مقهى يستقبل مرتادي الفندق‪ .‬تم أيضا ترميم‬ ‫وصيانة قصر قديم يعود إلى سنة ‪ 1903‬على ملك أحد‬ ‫فاعلي الخير الجورجيين‪ ،‬وتحويله إلى مقهى ليتيريا بعد أن‬ ‫أدخلت عليه لمسات عصرية‪ .‬يبدي زوار المبنى إعجابهم‬ ‫بروعة بالط السيراميك الذي يزين الصالة الكبيرة وهو من‬ ‫إبداعات فيلروي و بوش‪.‬‬

‫تظل العاصمة الجورجية‬ ‫تبليسي خالية من الثلوج‬ ‫أغلب أيام الشتاء‪.‬‬ ‫تتساقط الثلوج بضعة أيام‬ ‫فقط في السنة‬ ‫واكبت تبليسي الحداثة وس��ارت ب��دوره��ا في ركب‬ ‫العمارة المعاصرة التي تتجلى‪ ،‬خاصة‪ ،‬في جسر السالم‬ ‫المقوس والذي صممه المهندس المعماري االيطالي‬ ‫ميشيل دي لويجي غير أن السكان المحليين ال يحبون‬ ‫الجسر ألنه ال يتناغم مع العمارة القديمة التي تمتاز‬ ‫بها تبليسي‪ .‬أنا أشاهد أيضا القصور الرئاسية‪ ،‬بقبابها‬ ‫ال��زج��اج��ي��ة‪ ،‬البيضاوية ال��ش��ك��ل كما يطالعني مبنى‬ ‫المسرح االستعراضي وال��دي يبدو اليوم مثل أرجل‬ ‫من الصلب‪ .‬أما مبنى الخدمات العامة في تبليسي‬ ‫فهو يبدو الناظر بقبابه المتعددة كاألطباق الطائرة‪.‬‬ ‫هناك تنجز كل عمليات التسجيل‪.‬‬ ‫ش��ه��دت تبليسي ط��ف��رة ع��م��ران��ي��ة ك��ب��ي��رة وه���و ما‬ ‫تسبب في هدم الكثير من المنازل والمباني األثرية‬ ‫ال��ت��ي سوتها ال��ج��راف��ات ب���األرض لكن ازداد الوعي‬ ‫خالل األعوام الماضية بضرورة الحفاظ على المخزون‬ ‫المعماري ال��ذي تزخر به المدينة‪ .‬ففي ش��ارع ديفيد‬ ‫آغماشنبلي يجري تنفيذ واحد من أنجح مشاريع ترميم‬ ‫المباني المعمارية األث��ري��ة‪ ،‬ال��ت��ي ت��زخ��ر بها العاصمة‬ ‫الجورجية تبليسي‪ ،‬وهو ما يتطلب تكثيف الجهود من‬ ‫أجل الحفاظ عليها ألعوام قادمة‪.‬‬

In the gentle Mirgamari River, our boat glides through the water sending ripples to each of the opposing banks. The air is cooler, with a hint of a breeze. Standing on the foredeck, watching the white egret catching its prey, I knew that these were the moments that we cherished.

As I stand with my binoculars, I see a luminescent kingfisher spread its magnificent blue wings and dive right into the river, and return with a small fish in its beak. Though this was not the first time that I was witnessing such a surreal moment, it did not fail to evoke a sense of curiousness in my heart.

Why go?

The Sundarbans, meaning “beautiful forest”, is home to over 400 magnificent creatures and covers close to one million hectares spread across the Ganges River delta in south-western Bangladesh.

Though surrounded on three sides by two of the most densely populated countries on earth – India and Bangladesh – it remains remote and largely uninhabited by people. While much of the Sundarbans is forest, an impressive 175,000 hectares on the Bangladesh side of the border are waterways.

The star attraction of Sundarbans is the Royal Bengal Tiger. According to a 2015 census, 100 of these magnificent creatures call the Sundarbans home.

Sundarbans also harbours a good number of rare and globally threatened animals, including estuarine crocodile, fishing cat, otter, water monitor lizard, gangetic dolphin, snubfin dolphin, river terrapin, cobras etc.

Journey We, a handful of adventurers from B angladesh, Canada and Europe, boarded our boat at the small river port of Mongla, because of the muddy terrain, the only way to explore the park is by boat. Walking in the forest is prohibited, except for around the watchtowers, with a guide as escort. So it is common to

Sundarbans is named after a tree called “Sundari” which means beautiful! see many other boats as well in these open parts of the forest. The most thrilling experience about a visit to the Sundarbans is spotting a tiger in the wild.

It is a rarity that not everyone has had the privilege of enjoying. But we were the lucky ones. On the second day of our tour, we heard a tiger growling during noon.

While we were just about to have our lunch, we ignored our food and started scanning every inch of the mangrove

thicket. Suddenly, about 30 feet away, we saw a male tiger swimming ahead of us.

It was swimming fast, much faster than I have seen any human swim. But he let us photograph him for a few minutes before ambling into a nearby island.

The forest never sleeps! It is magical to go out after dark into the forest and listen to the roar of the predators. The tiger watchtower at the southern end of Jawtoli meadow close is the best spot to witness the hustle and bustle of the forests’ night-life. On the third night, while scanning the forest from the watchtower with my binoculars, I spotted a rare and elusive leopard cat. We watched the graceful feline for a few seconds before it vanished into the forest. Sundarbans never fails to impress me.

‫الشمس في كبد السماء وكنا نتأهب لنتاول طعام‬ ‫الغداء عندما سمعنا الصوت فتركنا أكلنا ورحنا نحدق في‬ ‫أشجار المنغروف إلى أن رأينا نمرا ذكرا يسبح على بعد ‪30‬‬ ‫قدما فقط من قاربنا‪ .‬لقد أذهلنا النمر بمهارته وسرعته‬ ‫في السباحة‪ ،‬متفوقا على أي كائن بشري‪ ،‬غير أننا تمكنا‬ ‫من التقاط صور له في غضون دقائق معدودات قبل أن‬ ‫يتوارى عن األنظار في الجزيرة القريبة‪.‬‬

‫يتم االستعانة بالمرافقين‪ .‬لذلك‪ ،‬تكثر القوارب‬ ‫التي تقل الراغبين في استكشاف تلك المنطقة‪.‬‬

A trip to Hyderabad, India, is incomplete without relishing the rich cultural heritage of the Nizami lifestyle. Like the Nizams of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, who were known for their royal, lip-smacking delicacies, the Nizams of Hyderabad, too, share the same passion for food. For starters, there is the resemblance to Awadhi cuisine in many ways with meat being a frequent ingredient in most of the rich Nizami preparations.

Hyderabad’s delectable cuisine is a fabulous potpourri of influences from the Mughal, Turkish, Arabic, Telugu and Marathwada kitchens.

Signature preparations such as pathar ka gosht (meat cooked on stone), chicken do pyaza (chicken cooked with onions), keema (spiced mince), kachche gosht ki biryani (meat cooked with yogurt and rice), mirchi ka salan (curried chili peppers), haleem (slow cooked meat combined with wheat), dalcha (meat cooked with pulses and spices), shahi tukra (a kind of bread pudding), zarda (sweet dish) and qubani ka meetha (sweet made from dried apricots) are prominent dishes from the Hyderabadi repertoire, a result of IndoMuslim confluence.

“Hyderabadi cuisine evolved during the Nizami era and elevated to a sublime art form. Copious amounts of nuts, dairy, the use of dry coconut, tamarind and red chilies along with other spices are the main ingredients that make the cuisine different,” says Paul Noronha, Executive Chef – ITC Kakatiya.

The locals of Hyderabad take their breakfast very seriously and ensure that they eat keeping in line with their royal lineage. A hearty Hyderabadi breakfast consists of khichdi (dish of rice and lentils) accompanied with curd, pickle, papad and ghee, ande ka khageena (egg dish) with paratha (stuffed naan), minced meat, liver recipes, etc. Even today a lot of traditional Hyderabadi families continue

the tradition of the Nizam’s royal breakfast, especially on the weekends.

“Hyderabad and Secunderabad were under the princely states and were the last to be a part of a united India. The food hence continued to survive in the street food segment of these places, as a shahi (royal) element in palaces and also has crept into kitchens and restaurants,” opines Anand Kumar, Executive Chef, Hyatt Hyderabad.

Meet the islander

Mohanna Aldoseri’s love-affair with the ocean dates back to his early childhood from the West Coast of Bahrain. After sailing professionally with the national sailing team of Bahrain since the age of 9, Mohanna now plans to encourage everyone to adopt an islander lifestyle with his venture, the Beach Culture Words: Abhishek Chakraborty

When was Beach Culture launched?

Beach Culture WLL was launched in October 2014 and started its operations in April 2015.

What do you mean when you say that you are organic?

We try to bring the beach culture to Bahrain and aim to bring out the ‘Islandness’ out to the surface. We manage and operate beaches and have opened Bahrain’s first natural (non-motorised) water-sports centre, specialising in paddle sports, kitesurfing, windsurfing and yoga.

Does Bahrain really have a beach culture?

Beach Culture is working with both the government and the private sector to facilitate people’s access to the nation’s water. The progress is notable and what’s coming in the next two years will be a positive change.

What you love most being a Bahraini?

I just love this place. I grew up playing in the waves of the West Coast of Bahrain. Other than the natural beauty, I love Bahrain for

Your USP? We run various events, such as the Arabian Moonlight Experience where we transform a beach into a natural and organic space.

We light up the entire beach with firesticks and lanterns. We host the local bands to play live music and invite people to join us on stage. There are pop up shops, paddle tours under the moonlight, and barbecue all through the night.

best gifts you have given yourself?

What makes you different?

We live by the rules of mother nature. We follow the sun, moon, tides and winds. We show people what it’s like to be an islander, to be one with the elements.

The best thing about Beach Culture?

Our vibe is different. Our staff members love their job and do it with passion, we have a very diverse team of specialists from Bahrain, Brazil, Spain, Sri Lanka, Hawaii and France who enjoy sharing their experience with our customers.

Bahrain, just like the previous three summers! But I’m planning a surf trip very soon.

I play guitar and practice vocals with my friends. I even go to the beach or chill at the pool.

If a spaceship landed in your backyard, what would you do?

I’d go to space and meet some aliens!

LOOSEN UP

Inflight Exercises 01 Upper back Flex Place both hands behind the head and arch your back tilting your chin up towards the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds, relax and repeat.

02 Neck roll Start with keeping your head straight and looking forward. Gently tilt it to the left, then roll it back facing the ceiling and finish the roll by bringing it to the starting position.

03 Shoulder roll Start in a rested position with arms to your sides. Roll your shoulders forward and bring them up towards your ears and continue to roll them towards your back and return to starting position.

04 Ankle rotation Rotate the ankle first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise motion. You can place the ball of your foot on the floor for support.

Repeat with other foot.

05 Trunk flex Perform a suitcase deadlift without using dumb bells by standing with your feet apart, bending at the knees with your torso perpendicular to the ground. Repeat 5 times.

06 Foot flex Lift one foot off the ground at a 90 degree angle. Point the toe of the lifted foot up towards the ceiling and move your ankle in a clockwise direction. Repeat on the other foot.

The Hunter's Prayer

The Hunter’s Prayer is an action film released on June 9, 2017, labelled by critics as “hitman with a heart of gold”. It starred Sam Worthington and Odeya Rush and directed
