Dubai features several man-made islands, and Palm Jumeirah is the largest of them.

Hitting the beach is often the first priority for young travellers. And the sands at JBR are perfect for all ages – the biggest draw being the giant inflatable waterpark anchored out at sea. The whole family can swing, slide, bounce, climb and inevitably make a splash off this edifice of fun.

One of the most important itinerary while with your family is the Dubai Mall. If you are travelling with kids, KidZania or Sega Republic cannot be missed. While KidZania is a child-

the 1850s. Their grand houses are distinctive because of their beautiful wind towers. The labyrinth of lanes and courtyards will tell you a history and significance of this district. The Dubai Museum is also nearby. Having learnt about Dubai’s beginnings, see it for yourself when you walk beside the Creek towards Shindagha and visit Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House, the original home of the grandfather of Dubai’s current Ruler. See the yard where he played as a boy and marvel at the monochrome photos on display of a bygone era. After that, step back in time at the Heritage and Diving Village museums next door. If time permits, explore the souqs – the original marketplaces where traders and craftsmen have toiled for over 150 years. Having enjoyed the Textile Souq on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek, take an abra – a traditional wooden boat – across the bustling Creek to Deira where you’ll find the aromatic Spice Souq and the dazzling Gold Souq.

The area around the falls was declared and developed as an eco park about 17 years ago. Some 500 acres of the land is thus protected to conserve the natural beauty of flora and fauna. The stream called Madhabcchara flows by it, and there is also a smaller waterfall called Parikunda in the same eco park area, but it flows only during the rainy season. There are also some hamlets of the local hilly indigenous people, particularly the Khasi. The way to

POPULAR SPOT

The big stones, surrounding forest and the adjoining streams attracts many tourists for picnics and day trips at the Madhabkunda.

One can visit the nearby tea gardens and buy a variety of tea leaves. Local markets can be browsed for local handicrafts.

stream has been made into a walkway, which though steep in places, is safe and comfortable to walk on. There is also a watch tower to take the view of the surrounding from a bit of height. Once at the falls, visitors can step into the cool water and walk over beautiful stones of various sizes and even just sit around and take in the sight of the fall. However, the exact basin of the falls is usually cordoned off, as the water can be deceptively deep and has currents not visible to the naked eye. You can take a short walk downstream, but you need to be careful of the slippery rocks. There is a small tourist area specifically built for people to play in the waters and even take some pictures with the statues of animals and birds. There is also a restaurant by the walkway leading to the falls, managed by the Bangladesh tourism body. At the park’s gate, there are some shops that sell local handicrafts and mementos. There is no good option for staying in the night in the region though. If short of time, Madhabkunda can be covered as a day trip.

Lopburi

Situated 150 km north of Bangkok, Lopburi has been a major centre of power since the 6th century. Remnants from Thai history can still be found in this city. A unique thing about the ruins is that they reflect a European influence in the architecture and details. Also known as the ‘Monkey City’, Lopburi is famous for the hundreds of crab-eating macaques that overrun the Old Town. The last weekend of November sees the annual Lopburi Monkey Festival, where monkeys around the Khmer-style temple Phra Prang Sam Yot and the Phra Kaan Shrine are offered a buffet of fruit to thank them for bringing prosperity to the town. Another must-see is the annual Lopburi Sunflower Blooming Festival. From November through January, thousands of sunflowers come into full bloom at Khao Jean Lae. It is also worth visiting Wat Khao Wongkhot, also known as the ‘Bat Cave’ as it houses millions of bats. The temple is situated in the middle of three mountains with a reclining Buddha enshrined at the foot of Sanam Daeng Mountain.

Nakhon Pathom

Nakhon Pathom lies in close proximity to the Thai capital, but it’s world apart. Lush green trees, stunning views and picture-perfect landscapes, particularly alongside the Tha Chin River, make Nakhom Pathom a perfect place to unwind and relax. Wat Phra Pathom Chedi is one of the most famous temples in the region. Located in the city of Nakhom Pathom, it houses the tallest stupa in the world (measuring 120.5 metres). The Phra Pathom Chedi Festival is held in the month of November for nine consecutive days. It is a good place to find local products on display and entertainment for all ages. Nakhon Pathom is also famous for its night market. Open daily from 6 pm till midnight, it houses an array of food vendors selling Thai favourites, including the sticky rice and coconut milk cooked in bamboo. The Don Wai Floating Market also makes a good stop for foodies. Although it is referred to a ‘floating market’, most of the vendors and restaurants are set up on land with boat trips on offer to visitors. It’s open daily from 7 am to 6 pm.

at urban Dhaka, one can never guess that this hustling bustling metro city could ever have been anything other than the capital of Bangladesh. However, a quick dip into the rich, royal history of Bangladesh would tell you that before Dhaka, Sonargaon was the capital of the ancient kingdom ruled by Isa Khan of Bengal. It is home to some of the oldest buildings in Bangladesh and is a relic city in its own right. Situated on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, about 29 km from the main city, Sonargaon is steeped in culture and history. It is visited by locals and regularly tops the must-try lists of foreign tourists as well. Dilapidated and aged buildings attract travellers, luring them in through nostalgia. The rustic beauty of the place gives off the feeling that time has somehow come to a standstill here. A short, one-day trip down this memory lane packs a number of sites for a history lover.

Shrines of Panjpirs and Shah Abdul Alia are undamaged as is the tomb of Sultan Ghias ud Din Azam Shah. Surrounding these two establishments are spaces with an abundance of flora, fauna, an artificial lake, ponds and a picnic spot. The old city of Panam is another must-see destination in Sonargaon. Founded by the rich Hindu traders of the early 19th century, the city is replete with rich history and ancient culture. At least a thousand year old river port of the east, it was the most important trading centre of cotton fabrics during the British period. Stunning twostorey homes, built fusing European and Mughal architecture, line on the either side of the central road. The entire area has held on to its rural charm and is both refreshing and meditative to visitors. Sonargaon is now placed under 2008 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund. Tourists are, therefore, regularly urged to enjoy the beauty of these spots sustainably.

Despite

age or occupation, everyone desire a break from the monotony of daily life. There are many people who have the travel bug in Bangladesh. Weekends today have become a way to celebrate and get rejuvenated. Savouring on good food, splurging on spas, exploring the undiscovered places not too far from the town is the new way of life for Bangladeshis. To cater to this group, a variety of resorts and eco-resorts have opened right outside towns. So mini-vacationers can enjoy a relaxing weekend, complete with a spa, a mini golf course and lush greenery. Where previously inter-country vacations usually meant a 12-hour journey to the beach or river cruise; today farmhouses on rent are a relatively new concept of vacationing in Bangladesh that are revolutionising the tourism scene in the country.

or a short breather for a quick dinner cruise, Contic does it all. The best time to avail these ecologically sound tours are between the months of October to March. They offer two kinds of boats -- the B613 and the Flèche d’Or. Both offer full day, afternoon, dinner and overnight cruises.

Base Camp Bangladesh

Base Camp in Rajendrapur is the first camp in the country offering outdoor activities like challenges on tree and ground, zip lining facilities, off road cycling, forest trekking and even archery. They also offer accommodation in weather proof tents, outdoor rainforest showers, campfire nights and access to swimming pool. The Base Camp can provide you a taste of the most basic army training like passing through tyres, rope walking, climbing, rope trenches and monkey passes. While it also has the usual bungalow facilities and air conditioned rooms, travellers rarely go to the Base Camp for relaxation.

Japan

is a mix of ultramodern lifestyle and ancient traditions. Unique in architecture and steeped in history, Japan's castles mesmerise tourists as part of their travel itinerary. These castles stand strong against the time and attacks faced in the past. Giving an insight into the country's heritage and culture, these castles were built to protect strategic sites, such as ports, river crossings, or crossroads. Japanese castles were primarily made of wood and built upon high stone mounds. Picking some of the most beautiful castles in Japan can be a part of one's sightseeing.

Elegance personified

(Clockwise from below) Nijo-jo Castle, Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Castle

58

Considered Japan's most spectacular castle for its elegant white appearance and imposing size, the Himeji Castle is one of the country's 12 original castles that stands strong against war and earthquake. The castle complex is over 400 years old with over 80 buildings. At the heart of the complex stands a six-storey wooden structure. There is also a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms in the castle. This UNESCO World Heritage site houses a shrine with several tourists coming here for it being deep-rooted to the history.

The Matsumoto Castle, built on plains is an elegant black and white structure with three turrets. Inside the castle are steep stairs and low ceilings that lead to the display of armour and weapons from the period the castle was built. This castle is designated as the 'National Treasures of Japan'. A moon viewing party is held every autumn on the grounds in the specially built moon viewing room of the Matsumoto Castle.

Modern twist

Odawara Castle is a modern, concrete reconstruction dating back to the 1960s. The castle is home to Odawara City Library, local culture museum, Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine, Hotoku Museum, an amusement park, a toy train and a memorial. The grounds of Odawara Castle are scenic during spring with cherry blossom blooming in the compound. The donjon built by the Inaba was rebuilt in 1706 after it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1703. Odawara Castle was listed as one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan by the Japan Castle Foundation in 2006.

North End Coffee Roasters is another age-old treasure in Dhaka. Primarily, a laid back café, it also serves a variety of pastries and coffeepaired desserts, which have their own fan following. There are some coffee connoisseurs who swear by North End for their caffeine kicks. Reasonably priced brownies and chewy triple chocolate cookies are some of the popular items. Slightly pricier and newer items on the menu include a drool-worthy apple cobbler bowl and freshly made bagels. Their staff is well trained and fluent in English, thereby attracting a large foreign crowd.

Bella Italia

Another gem from the 90s, Bella Italia is an out and out Italian restaurant. Moderately priced, this restaurant is famous for its fettuccine alfredo pasta and its thin crust seafood pizzas. Their iced teas also grab a fair share of attention. Simple, soul food is what this restaurant offers.

Your meal ends with chilled cinnamon tea, the likes of which can dangerously addict your taste buds. Pricey like anything, this restaurant may be reserved for special occasions.

Turkish Doner Kebab

While the entrance to this restaurant is somewhat nondescript, the insides look like some sort of Turkish wonderland. Food is served in dainty, hand-painted porcelain dishes and the dimly lit space has intricately designed Turkish lamps. Their Turkish coffee is soothing and one doner wrap can keep two people full for a long time. Moderately priced, go in for an experience for all six senses!

Hotel Al- Razzak

This hotel is in the middle of Old Dhaka. Known for murgh musallam and khashi glassi, with some mind blowing labang (a spicy mix of

Shimanto Square

Another open-air food court, with both affordable and pricey options, Shimanto Square has a range of fast food stalls in one space. It offers amazing filling and deliciously juicy takeout burgers to spicy sub-sandwiches to crispy cones of crepes filled with nuts and berries. You will find young men, women and students relaxing on the steps, usually accompanied by guitars.

Panshi

A boat restaurant in the bustling locality of Dhanmondi, Panshi offers everything Bengali and Bengali Chinese. While the food is moderately priced, it may be difficult finding a day when the restaurant is not booked for a function. The largest and best known of Zimbabwe’s national parks, Hwange National Park is packed with big game and is famous for massive numbers of buffalo and -- in particular -- its elephant herds. The park boasts over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 bird species recorded. It is said that the population of wild dogs in Hwange is one of the largest in Africa. The park is named after the warrior king Mzilikazi of the Ndebele tribe. He used the area as a hunting ground before it was

Fast Facts

Hwange National Park is a 5,656 square mile park located in Zimbabwe, Africa. All Zimbabwe's specially protected animals are to be found in Hwange National Park. Accomodation is provided at a number of game lodges. Walking, driving and horseback safaris are popular here.

declared a national park. Just an hour drive from the Victoria Falls, it is one of Africa's finest havens for wildlife and is home to a vast array of animals. Herds of animals, ranging from eland, zebra, giraffe, sable, wildebeest, roan, sable and kudu, can be easily seen roaming around the park. Another feature that makes Hwange different from the other parks in the region are the shallow pans (lake-lets) and natural salt-licks. In the dry winter months, animals are often seen coming to these pans for drinking water. The flora of the park is mostly Acacia woodland set in Kalahari sands. And it is also the most accessible reserve in the country; hiring cars from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo is easy and cheap.

Back to sighting

So I am standing there, watching Rusty moving ahead looking at the footprints of the lions. Then suddenly Rusty points his finger. “There”. Soon I saw a lioness behind the bushes. The tension was incredible. She was so close. Would she pounce? Or would she

just disappear before we got the chance to see her clearly? Instead she just padded her way into the bushes and she disappeared. We came back to our camp as dusk was falling and arrived in time to sit around the campfire, watch the sun set, and allow the events of the day to sink in. While it may surprise many, it is true that Zimbabwe is very safe and that its people are utterly charming.

Best time

The best time to visit Hwange is from July to August and from December to March. Game viewing is at its best in the dry season (from July-August and the driest in September and October), when the scarcity of water attracts large numbers of elephants to the waterholes. During the rainy season (November to March), the wildlife is dispersed across the park and thus make it difficult to spot them. However, you can visit during this time to watch the birdlife, it's spectacular.
