Malaysia

is truly a place of wonders. On one side we have bustling cities, colonial architecture and lovely beaches, while the other hosts jungles full of Orangutans, granite peaks and remote tribes. Yes we are in Borneo, a giant rugged island which shares border with the Malaysian state of Sabah and Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan and the tiny nation of Brunei. Borneo is huge – it is the third largest island in the world - and has become one of the biggest places for adventure in Southeast Asia. Let’s see what can be explored there.

Extreme adventure

The one for extreme adventurers, Mount Kinabalu stands majestically at 4,095 metres and is the highest mountain to climb in Southeast Asia. A two-day hike covering a total distance of 8.72 km is tough, but you will definitely love the way the scenery changes in every few hundred metres, giving you that sense of achievement after reaching the top. Watching the sun rise from above the clouds really does make you feel

Marine life

Sipadan Island was once described as an untouched piece of art while divers around the world have voted it as one of the top five dive sites in the world. A 25-minute walk is all that is needed to circle the island on foot. But what attracts people from across the globe is its diverse marine life. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, this crown jewel is a treasure trove of some of the most amazing marine species. This island is also famous for the variety of tropical birds; Sea Eagles, Kingfishers, Sunbirds, Starlings and Wood Pigeons to name a few. Exotic crustaceans including the Coconut Crab roam the beaches and scurry

Encounter with 0rangutans

IivsIUvs‡qi mv‡_ mvÿvr

Orangutans are found naturally in Borneo and each year, thousands make pilgrimage on the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre - the largest in the world for orphaned orangutans - to see this little orange man. At this centre, the only natural habitat in the world for orangutans other than one in Sumatra, there is a guarantee sighting of this creature. The centre is much more than a glorified zoo and this may be the closest encounter one can get with an uncaged orangutan.

Cultural instinct

Located at a distance of 25 minutes from Kota Kinabulu is the Mari Mari cultural village, a place infamous for headhunters. In the village, you will be introduced to various traditional homes of Sabahan ethnic communities — the Bajau, Lundayeh, Murut, Rungus and Dusun — which are built by descendants of the tribes, which they represent. For hands-on experience, check out the little huts in the village where daily routine of traditional Sabahan life comes alive like blowpipe-making demonstration, fire-starting demonstration with bamboo and tattoomaking demonstration. With all this and a lot more to be explored, Borneo is truly a travellers’ delight.

Roam like a royal

As soon as you step out of the station, you will realise that you have come to the right place. No trip to Windsor could possibly be complete without a visit to the grand Windsor Castle, the family home to British kings and queens for over 1,000 years, with the Changing of the Guard as one of the highlights of the visit. A band usually accompanies the Guards, although this is subject to weather conditions. Also known as ‘Guard Mounting’, this colourful pageantry takes place from April until July and every second day for the rest of the year except for Sundays and days with turbulent weather conditions. Sundarbans is home to about 200 Royal Bengal Tigers, the national animal of Bangladesh.

Sundarbans gets its name from the Sundari trees found in abundance in the forest. Sundar also literally translates into ‘beautiful’ in Bangla and many say that Sundarbans literally mean a ‘beautiful forest’. Indisputably so, the Sundarbans is home to about 200 Royal Bengal Tigers, the national animal of Bangladesh and one of its most prized treasures. It also houses

Fast Facts

Sundarbans is the largest Mangrove forest in the world shared between the countries of India and Bangladesh. Indian side of Sundarbans measuring around 4000 sq. kms consists of 102 islands just 16 short of the number of islands in the city of Venice. Sundarbans are named after a mangrove tree called ‘Sundari’, which means beautiful.

red fiddler crabs, hermit crabs and a variety of other aqua fauna. Other pleasantly surprising sights may include rhesus monkeys, crocodiles and the ridley sea turtle. An unbelievable variety of reptiles are also found in the Sundarbans -- king cobra, rock python and the water monitor, to name a few. The endangered river terrapin and the rare barking deer are also found in Mechua Beach and Haliday Island of the Sundarbans, respectively. With such a rich treasure trove of fauna, the Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sundarbans National Park is a national park, tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve.

How to reach

This green wonderland is only accessible by waterways; the best way to start your journey is through Khulna, which is accessible through rail and air. While it may take three-four days to explore this region. Go for reliable choices like the one offered by the guide tours or Bengal tours. The four-day excursion will cost you roughly Taka 12,000 per person, where you can break out into small groups and track tigers (with armed forest guards, of course!) or collect honey with local collectors. Your main journey will start and end in Khulna.

If you are more of a lone traveller or like to go rough, you can choose a cheaper and earthier route. A short and direct bus journey from Khulna or a more adventurous paddlewheel ferry known as The Rocket, with a connecting bus will land you in the Mongla Port. Once you are in Mongla, ask for boat that travels to Sundarbans. Although there is nothing that can be pre-booked in this way of travel, local tour operators will find you as soon as you arrive. A drawback of this form of travel is that you cannot stay anywhere overnight. Instead, on a day trip, you can go as downstream as Karamjal Forest Station or Harbaria Wildlife Sanctuary, the whole thing can cost you about Taka 1,000. This unconventional adventure allows you to trek the forests on foot with maualis or honey collectors, in search of natural honey. When it is finally time to turn back, (you really can’t stay out too late in the choking heat of this season), families return home to sumptuous meals of pulao, shorshe ilish (hilsa fish cooked in mustard oil), bhuna khichuri and kosha hasher mangsho (a mix of rice and lentils with spiced duck meat) and a variety of sweetmeats. It is a king’s feast followed by some much-needed rest.

Festive joy

The rest period, of course, is not for long. The day is so awaited, not much of it could be allowed to waste resting. Late afternoon or early evening is

is a time to meet and greet family and friends. People dress up in cooler finery, their festival stomachs adequately full, to carry packets of mishti to the houses of close friends and family. Languishing over light snacks and a good amount of relaxed laughter, the sun sets over smiling faces, fighting off the exhaustion of the day.

While times are changing and the traditional costumes are giving way to more comfortable fusion styles, there is fun in sticking to the bright colours. Cuisines may be different as people increasingly become fried-food conscious, but there is still hardly a single household without the traditional ilish, cooked in one way or another. Noboborsho is indeed, one festival that makes us realise each year, that while forms may change, traditions are irreplaceable.

Celebrating

Dcgnv‡`‡ki

46th year of Independence with great valour, Bangladesh became a sovereign country in the late hours of March 25, 1971. Relentless efforts of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led to this revolution. In the late hours of this day, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman signed an official declaration after which slogans were raised, stating the unity among people. The slogans followed, "Banglar Hindu, Banglar Buddha, Banglar Muslim, we all are Banglali", and the independent Bangladesh had a new voice and a new identity. Every year, Bangladesh salutes the sacrifices made by those many martyrs on March 26 of every year with great pomp.

the dawn cracks, Jagannath, Alam, Bhola, Gopi and Abdul wait patiently in dark silhouettes at Moulovir Char spreading their ‘hilsa jaal’ (net to catch the silver fish). The sight of the hilsa struggling for their last breath is very rare to catch. It is said that this muchfavoured delicacy survives for a very brief period outside water. “Ilshe-gnurhi…Ilshe-gnurhi…ilish maachher dim... Ilshe-gnurhi...Ilshe-gnurhi...din er belar him”

(The drizzle is soft as the roe of hilsa and feathery as the mist at day-break). ‘Ilshe gnurhi’ or light drizzle along with monsoon winds drive shoals of spawning hilsas up the estuaries of PadmaMeghna-Jamuna-Ganga- Rupnarayan and Godavari rivers. For the next few months, the different ‘chars’ (sand islands) and channels like Arhial Khan, Kirtonkhola, Tentulia, Rupsa, Pasur will become the breeding ground for this coveted fish.

Commercially from March to October, life in the fish markets of Bangladesh centres around the silver fish. Once trawlers deboard their catch, they are first auctioned and then sent to different parts of Bangladesh. A lot of the fish is also exported to neighbouring countries like India. A kg of Hilsa in Bangladesh can vary from Rs 2,000-3,000.

Bengali sentiments

Maiyer bia dimu poolish/Bhat khaibe ilish, which translates to ‘I’ll marry my daughter to a police officer who will treat her with rice and Hilsa curry’; this reflects the deep sentiment attached to the fish. said that for a Bengali, the litmus test is to take a mouthful of hilsa and sort out the bones without showing any sign of discomfort — no mean feat given that the fish teems with bones. Even today many families feast in ‘jora ilish’ (a pair of Hilsas) on the auspicious ‘Bijoya Dashomi’ of Durga Puja festival.

Culinary delight

A meal of hot rice, dal, ghee and freshly caught hilsa even today evokes nostalgia of the first downpour of the monsoon. The fish, that was once about meals with the family or bonhomie with friends, is now a high-end commodity. It can be boiled in tangy mustard oil, baked in coconut paste or smoked in plantain leaves. Mango hilsa, pineapple hilsa, hilsa bhaturi, hilsa do-pyaza, hilsa biryani, hilsa pickles are the wonders of Bengali kitchens. Ilish ‘shnutki’ and ‘nona ilish’ are simple methods to preserve ilish for guests at home. Many upmarket restaurants sell hilsa delicacies round the year. While chefs have crafted their versions of the baked and smoked hilsa, the boneless version hilsa salad makes a delectable choice.

leisure zones to corporates, a sari is often the most elegant dress code that defines femininity, fashion and tradition altogether. With a transition in season, it is often seen how women cover the beautiful traditional textiles with sweaters, taking away the overall impact. But with textile innovation and re-interpreted woven heritage, there is a range of one-of-its kind pure cashmere wool lace sari. Now, one can embrace cold with style by draping these never-done-before saris. A traditional attire in Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries, this style remains unchanged despite the modernisation of thoughts and dressing ideologies alike. It also happens to be a woman's priced possession showcasing one's rich roots and culture. In the past, the double-sided Doshala was very popular, but Tanira Sethi, a Delhi-based designer, took on pure cashmere wool and decided to produce saris that are lightweight and practical to wear.

Luxe textile

The lighter the wool, the more it authenticates its worth. It is simply known as cashmere, as it is a fibre usually obtained from Kashmiri goats. It is finer, softer and lighter fabric than that of sheep's wool, making it an expensive one.

Collection redux

These pure cashmere wool saris are segmented into three individual design ideologies; the first one offers pure woven cashmere, the second is a range of ultra luxe hand painted textile and the third is cashmere wool lace sari, which incorporates fine cashmere Leaver's lace (floral or stylised fine French lace) fabric. This is a rare form of lace that took a year in research and development. The yarn is hand embroidered with pure cashmere in Paris.

Minimalism couture

The woollen sari collection has as little as design possible, keeping it minimal yet classic. These designs include geometric motifs and details like twill, herringbone and chevron patterns running through the fabrics to an interesting touch. The colour palette ranges from black, indigo, charcoal, muddy browns ecru to accents of colours in red, maroon and turmeric. These light-weight and pure cashmere wool saris are nothing less than a touch of heritage and history attached to its evolution.

66

One can now flaunt the winter fashion stylishly and also enjoy the soft wool's touch on the body. This will add the charm of being fashionable yet giving a feel of comfort in a sari!

William

Wordsworth Shakespeare is an era to live. Till date, noted theatre festivals honour his creations, students continue to memorise his poems and scholars are in the race to interpret the texts created by him. This is the magic that this great poet holds.

(Left) William Shakespeare died in April, 1616

Famously known as an eminent poet, playwright and a great dramatist, he continues to inspire the English language years after his existence. Born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden Shakespeare, William Shakespeare was baptised in Stratford on April 26, 1564. He was the third child to his parents. Divulging details about the life of this celebrated poet, several mysteries surround his education. Though no records of his education survive, several facts state him to be educated at the King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford, where he learned Latin and a little Greek and read the Roman dramatists. At 18, he

married Anne Hathaway, a woman who was around seven or eight years older than him. Later on, by 1952, he took to the stage and penned down playwrights on geography, culture and diverse personalities of London. A little ahead in years, he wrote plays that captured the complete range of human emotions and conflict. Shakespeare wrote more than thirty plays divided into four categories: history, comedy, tragedy and romance. His earliest plays were primarily comedies and histories such as Henry VI and The Comedy of Errors, but in 1596, Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, his second tragedy and over the next dozen years he returned to the form, writing the

plays for which he is now best known: Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra. Till now, these are considered as the finest work of English language. In his final years, Shakespeare turned to the romantic side with Cymbeline, A Winter’s Tale and The Tempest.

Shakespeare is often called England’s national poet and the ‘Bard of Avon’

Shakespeare invented large number of words in his plays and poems with the combination of Latin, French and native roots. It is believed that he has influenced the English language more than any other writer in history. His work was popular in number of villages, cities and metropolises for more than 400 years. His plays are translated into every major language of the world and performed more than any other playwright.
