BFCC won 'Excellent On-time Performance' award Malaysian Airlines Authority has awarded Biman Flight Catering Centre (BFCC)`Excellent On time Performance’ award for its quality in-flight meal and cabin dressing service. Biman Special Service Week

Biman Bangladesh Airlines observed "Special Service Week" on the occasion of 97th birthday of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Biman CBA provided special handling and services to the passengers of Biman during this service week run from March 17 to 23, this year.

Biman run all-women flight on Women's Day

With an aim to pay respect to the contribution of women, Biman Bangladesh Airlines operated a special flight by all women to mark the International Women's Day. The national flag carrier has taken the initiative to encourage women in the aviation sector, as well as inspire them to move forward matching up with other airlines globally. The all-women special flight was operated on Dhaka-Sylhet-Dhaka route on March 8, with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Captain Tania Reza and First Officer Antara led the BG-0603 flight with six female cabin crew.

taking us through some narrow lanes. Don’t be surprised if you find the rickshawala bumping with the cycle rickshaw ahead with full force and then waiting for him to move ahead without uttering a word! I wanted to capture the mood of the place at the break of dawn. Sadarghat was teeming with people in the morning. Hundreds of boats and a few launches were lined up to carry passengers, goods, fruit and vegetables to different places.

Immersing in the chaos

Even though, I saw quite a few inveterate travellers getting on to the boat very comfortably, I found it too dicey as the boat was 10 ft below me in the river. on the boat, I was more worried about my camera gear and did not even budge a centimetre holding on to my bag tightly. I ducked once so that my head did not hit the edge of the steamer coming on our way as the boatman rowed the boat. The boat wobbled and as I quivered like a jelly, the boatman kept shouting out to me “Bhoy Noi, Bhoy Noi” (Fear not, fear not) to calm me down.

Unlike the road near the Sadarghat Port that is crowded with tea stalls and shops and a few street vendors lined on one side, people carrying vegetables and other goods to their shops, the cycle rickshaws adding to the pandemonium, this end of the ghat was more peaceful.

Shopping experience

Before coming to Dhaka, I had read about Shakhari Bazaar, which is two kilometres away from Sadarghat and that was my next destination. This is where shaakhas (white bangles made of conch shells) are designed.

The other materials that are part of the Bengali weddings like the shankha (conch shell) and the pure white coloured mukut/topor (that the bridegroom wears on his head) are also designed and sold.

Things to do

There’s the usual Thai massage and spa places, cooking courses, trekking, cycling, diving, snorkelling, water sports and fishing. Also, check out sea cruises to Sam Roi Yod National Park. In recent years, Hua Hin has also become renowned for its kite-boarding. People flock from far and wide to this coast to catch the winds that come off the sea and provide the thrill of surfing with a kite.

Start your day by visiting the Hua Hin railway station. It’s Thailand’s most famous, dating back to the 1920s. I suggest you also visit Kaeng Krachan National Park and climb the waterfalls.

The layers seem to go on indefinitely, but I believe there are 16. Be sure to take a big bottle of water though, or you might struggle on the way down. It’s a fair drive from Hua Hin, so get a taxi if you haven’t got a car. You could also do the journey on a moped.

You really shouldn’t leave without visiting Wat Huay Mongkol, either. This temple was home to the immensely popular monk, Luang Pu Thuat, famed for performing miracles. The beautiful Wat Huay Mongkol houses the largest statue of Luang Phor Thuat in Thailand in a park-like setting.

Lastly, for some shopping, check out the charming Cicada Market, a delightful shopping strip nestled under huge, old trees offering design oriented products, hand-made souvenirs to t-shirts, shoes, bags, soaps, candles and open-air food courts.

Hua Hin after dark is pretty quiet, which suits the type of holiday you’ll have here. However, if you are looking for a nice dinner, you can head off to the Hua Hin night market. my one-year stay in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I stumbled upon a shop tucked in a sequestered corner at downtown Balad where shimmering lanterns were crafted by the deft hands of two artisans. I wonder what were they?

Armed with a smattering of Arabic, I asked the person, what are these lanterns? Prompt was his reply, "they are fanoos."

"Fanoos!" I repeated. The person, whom he called Saleh, gave me a rudimentary information about fanoos, children's Ramadan lanterns. These adorn the entrances and facades of Muslim homes in Arab and few Muslim countries to welcome the Ramadan.

Quite fascinated, I ambled some alleyways on the eve of Ramadan in Jeddah. Clusters of shimmering fanoos were dangling from roofs and walls in the streets making the street a fairy-tale locality. With the herald of Ramadan, some streets are dressed in festive lanterns as a way to celebrate it for a whole month.

Back in Muscat where I lived for 12 years, my former colleague Ahmed and an Egyptian shared with me that no place in the world can match the festive nature of Cairo in Ramadan.

originated after the island was plagued by an epidemic that killed thousands. So, the locals brought in the God, Pak Tai who conquered the disease. Since then, the festival is celebrated every year on Buddha's birthday.

People offer fruits, incense and buns to the God. There are colourful celebratory and worship items on sale. Children come dressed in colourful costumes that resemble the mythological Chinese deities. A week-long festivities encompass a wide range of activities from parades, opera performances, beating the drums, lion dances, martial dance and the culmination of festival by the bun scrambling competition. The competition style has been modified as per the modern health and safety standards and includes skilled people who climb the bun tower to fetch the plastic buns.

is fuel to the soul that stimulates energy in the body. The oldest and natural form of perfume, ittar finds its origin in ancient times when it was extracted for its aromatic beauty.

Reigning scent

Ittar dates back to the historical era of Mughals who patronised perfumery. Apart from this, ittars are also considered holy fragrance in almost every Muslim wedding.

Ittar usage is quite pervasive in the country too as part of its cultural heritage. And most of the scents derived from the agar trees grow in Sylhet district.

Ideally, the fragrance must not be overpowering and should blend in the human sense of scents. Ittar doesn't come in masculine or feminine versions and is very different from a synthetic perfume. Oil-based ittars can be applied directly on the body.
