August 15 marks a black chapter in the history of Bangladesh. On August 15, 1975, the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of entire family was killed by a despicable group of people. People of Bangladesh observes August 15 as National Mourning Day. Just recently, we have resumed our Dhaka-Delhi flight after a gap of over five years. Currently, we are offering three weekly flights to Delhi, the national capital of India. The national flag carrier is overwhelmed with people's response on the route and planning to increase the flight frequency to four flights a week. Please read through our inflight magazine Bihanga to stay updated about the latest on travel and food, across Biman's destinations and beyond. On behalf of all the employees working with Biman, thank you once again for putting your faith on us. Have a smooth flying experience!

August

15 marks a black chapter in the history of this country—a day in 1975 when the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with almost his entire family, was killed by a despicable group of people. Bangabandhu’s love, dedication and vision for the country were second to none. He is too big a phenomenon to be confined to certain political or geographical limits. He was truly a global leader. His lifelong struggle to liberate the Bengalis from the Pakistani colonial masters has inspired many aspiring to be free across the world.

22

The incumbent government of Bangladesh headed by his daughter Sheikh Hasina deserves special thank from the people of Bangladesh for her relentless efforts to make sure that killers of Bangabandhu were brought to justice. Without her it was not possible as a disgraceful law — namely the Indemnity Ordinance—had been promulgated by the post 1975 government. Bangabandhu never forgot that he derived his authority from the people of Bangladesh.

People from all walks of life had access to his home and office. It was Mujib who, by his trustworthy regard for both the form and the substance of democracy, instilled democratic habits in our country. His respect for parliament, regard for the independence of the judiciary, his courtesy to those of different political convictions, his commitment to education, and his respect to institutions over individuals, all left us a precious legacy of freedom. It was Mujib who kept the democracy above all in a country like Bangladesh riven by so many internal differences and complexities, beset by acute poverty and badly affected by war. Bangabandhu was a seasoned politician. He could read the people’s minds and was aware of the activities going on around him. The plundering of resources by the Pakistanis and the torture on Bengalis reinforced his conviction that liberation was the only option left for the

Bengalis if they were to live respectfully. And for his sacrifice and dedication Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became Bangabandhu and the Father of the Nation as Bangladesh emerged on the world map from its Liberation War. In his total life Bangabandhu endeavoured for a happy, prosperous, democratic and non-communal Bangladesh. He had the pledge to build an exploitation-free democratic, non-communal Bangladesh, He dreamt of a Bangladesh that would imbibe the main spirit of independence and all persons will have equal rights. The architect of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman must be remembered for his role in the independence struggle. He is a symbol of national unity, the unity that led to the creation of Bangladesh. Bangladesh today is a country of high GDP growth rate along with strong per capita income. The country is trying to achieve the goal of becoming a middle-income nation by 2021. During his three years rule, Bangladesh had the highest growth rate in South Asia despite the fact that he was ruling a country which was totally destroyed by the liberation war. He had a dream to make Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia.

with Islamic ethos and practices. The folk culture of Medina, though not as vibrant as it used to be, is still alive despite the advent of modern technology. Similarly, Saudi Arabia’s Hijaz region, which includes Medina, boasts of famous folk arts like Majrur, Al-sihba and Mizmar, which reflect the two holy cities (Mecca and Medina) and their influence on the Islamic world. Bedouins were constantly on the move and entertained themselves through poetry. Hakawati is an ancient storytelling tradition, which is being promoted by a few organisations. Hakawati sessions are occasionally organised in Medina wherein a storyteller narrates a story in an entertaining and captivating manner. The stories focus on local and international folklore. People gather around a storyteller, who then spins tales of love, bravery, war and history. These sessions are, therefore, meant for entertainment

William Dalrymple eulogised Delhi by calling it the ‘City of Djinns’. It is a city that has remained India’s imperial capital for centuries apart from brief interludes in history when the capital shifted to Daulatabad during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1325-51) or when Calcutta (modern-day Kolkata) was made the capital of British India in 1911. Despite being the seat of the bureaucracy, intelligentsia and the government for centuries, Delhi has continued to flourish as a cultural hub courtesy its historical past.

In this journey of a lifetime, there are a few places that have remained with me and Lodhi Gardens is one of them. It houses the tombs of the Sayyids and Lodhi rulers. It is an important historical site of preservation because historical sites of the Sayyid and Lodhi rulers are few and far between in India. These tombs are a fine example of quintessential Indo-Islamic architecture and give us a picture of architecture that existed prior to the time of the Mughals. However, the Athpula, built during the reign of Emperor Akbar, stands out in the milling crowd and is a fine example of early Mughal architecture and is located within the Lodhi Garden Complex. These days, the garden, apart from playing host to these historical monuments, hosts the crème de la crème of Delhi with diplomats, politicians and foreign dignitaries frequently going there for a stroll. It is also possible to spot the youth of the city there – serenading and walking along the multiple pathways in the garden.

City of open spaces

(Above) Traditional dolls at Delhi Haat; (Opposite page) View of Humayun’s Tomb

Back in the 1990s when I was in school, going to open spaces was on top of my mind and the historian in me was often inspired to visit monuments, old and new. In the quest to discover the old and regal, I visited monuments frequently, one of them being Agrasen ki Baoli. It stands out for its architecture and design. This baoli (stepwell), with 108 steps, is unique in many ways. The visible part of the stepwell has three levels and each level is decorated with niches on both sides. The baoli is believed to have been constructed by an influential Agrawal merchant (a trading community in India) named Nattal Sahu, a minister in the court

of the local ruler King Anang Pal III. The ancient baoli was built again in the 14th century. Today, it is a site of tremendous importance for cultural and art historians. It is frequented visited by the young and old alike and people with an innate sense of curiosity about the past. It is a popular site for shooting Bollywood films too. As I grew up, history remained an interest but like any other girl, bags, shoes and of course books caught my fancy and the place that I frequently went to was Khan Market. It is one of the costliest retail markets in India! Khan Market is also a goldmine for foodies. Multiple eateries are located in this busy market with top-end restaurants and food joints of varying budgets dotting the place. Khan Chachas and its rolls were an absolute favourite with me for a long time. Similarly, Big Chill Cafe served the best pastries while you could just catch hold of a book

Located

in the Chittagong division of Bangladesh, Rangamati is surrounded by Tripura in the north, Bandarban in the South, Myanmar in the East and Chittagong in the West. Rangamati is, in fact, the only district in Bangladesh with two international borders – one with India and the other with Myanmar. More than 52 per cent of the population of Rangamati is indigenous, home to communities such as Chakma, Marma, Assamese, Tripuri, to name a few. The remaining percentage of the population is non-indigenous. This southeastern paradise and arguably the largest district of the country was historically a fighting ground for the monarchs of Tripura and Arakan before being taken over by the Mughals. Chakma and other tribal communities settled in when a Chakma tribal leader took refuge with the Mughals.

Charming beauty

Apart from the natural charm of the city and its people, Rangamati has a lot to offer its visitors. Be it food or tourism, homespun textiles or ivory jewellery, Rangamati packs a mighty touristy punch. Starting with the Kaptai Lake to the hanging bridge and the Kaptai National Park, Shuvolong Waterfalls and the iridescent Sajek Valley, Rangamati boasts natural beauty in abundance and is rightly termed an eco-tourism spot in the country.

LEISURE

Rangamati is also known as Lake City as it is right next to the Kaptai Lake. A man-made lake built in the 1960s, it was primarily built as a reservoir when the Kaptai Dam was built. The lake spans over an area of 11,000 km sq and was built by flooding the valleys and plain lands. These forest covered hills and valleys rise from beneath the water, painting a pleasing picture. As other scenic spots can also be seen while crossing the waterways, the Kaptai Lake Cruise Tours offered are worth taking.

A peaceful place in the Borokol sub-district, about 25 km from Rangamati, Shuvolong Falls has more than one waterfall to see. The largest of them, falling from almost 300 ft is a sight to behold. Access to a nearby market has made Shuvolong a popular tourist spot. The area is also easily accessible by speed boats or motor boats from Rangamati. Open Sunday through Thursday, the Tribal Museum houses traditional apparels, ornaments, pottery and crafts, musical instruments, paintings, ancient statues, coins, etc. belonging to various tribes. The place is run by the Tribal Cultural Institute and was established in 1978. The picturesque Hanging Bridge, spanning 335 ft across a section of the Kaptai Lake is a famous icon of Rangamati. For no reasons other than aesthetic, it draws large crowds every year and is thronged by tourists almost every season. With an attractive mix of flora and fauna in the forest area, the Kaptai National Park attracts over 50,000 visitors per year. The walking trails across the green forest are

Best time to go

The best time to visit Rangamati is between October to February. The climate is cool and dry. However, if one is not opposed to a little bit of inconvenience of the rain, the full beauty of Rangamati might really be in monsoon when the lush greenery of the city is rain washed, the waterfalls are fuller and the heart is lighter. If you have been there, you must plan to go again. If you have not, you are in for a treat.

Bangladeshi cuisine is much acclaimed across Europe and the world. Among the many world-famous chefs, Bangladeshi chefs have carved a niche for themselves by the virtue of their qualities and skills. The traditional food has reached foreign shores. Therefore, we can proudly claim that Bangladeshi traditional cuisines are among the world's finest. Since time immemorial, this part of Bengal has attracted travellers from far and wide because of the variation in style and instant availability. In fact, this Bengal, though termed as the hinterland is extremely fertile and farmers, have traditionally enjoyed a good harvest most of the time. The moderate climatic conditions and a good geographical location have helped this part of Asia considerably and the cultivation of various types of crops and spices has been made possible. This has helped in the transformation and diversification of traditional Bangladeshi cuisine to a great extent.

Bangladesh is home to several serpentine rivers that help us to have more fishes in our waters. Therefore, Bangladesh is often associated with the phrase 'Bengalis are of rice and fish'. Rice and fish, especially sweet-water fish, are our staple food. Fish-based foods are mainly found in Bangladesh. In addition to this, the six seasons of the country help us create different varieties of food as per the weather. In winter, we can, therefore, see more than a hundred varieties of pitha (traditional cakes). Among the many other traditional food items available in Bangladesh, few notable are khichidi (Hotchpotch), biryani, tehari, kacchi biryani, polau, korma, kala bhuna, jorda, firni, sirni, borhani, kebab (shikh, reshmi, shashlik, tikka and shami), mughali, jhal fri, deem khichidi, chingri khichidi, Ilish khichidi, lassi, dal puri, alu paratha and many kinds of bhortas (mashes) like shutki (dry fish), potato, brinjal, sweet potato, okra, papaya and tomato). Bangladesh is also famous for its various egg-based dishes.

Major fish dishes include hilsha (our national fish), pabda (butterfish), rui (rohu), pangash (catfish), chital (clown knife fish), magur (walking catfish), bhetki (barramundi) and tilapia. Meat consumption includes beef, lamb, venison, chicken, duck, squab and koel. Vegetable dishes, mashed (bhorta), boiled sabji (vegetables), or leafy vegetables, are widely served. Seafood such as lobsters and shrimps are also often found. In addition, the sweet dishes widely popular in the country include doi (yoghurt), sandesh, rosogolla, chamcham, bundia, kalojam, rajbhog etc). For evening snacks, we have nan, roti, paratha, bakhorkhani, muri, payesh, moa, laddu etc. Usually, almost all the sublime Bangladeshi dishes reveal strong aromatic flavours. A variety of spices and herbs, along with mustard oil or soybean oil and ghee, are used in Bangladeshi cooking. Dal (lentil) is the second-most important staple food, which is served with rice/paratha/luchi. gastronomy and tourism provides a vehicle for the transmission of culture, which in turn, if properly managed, enhances local economic development, sustainable practices and food experiences. Hence, gastronomy tourism helps brands to market destinations, as well as assists in maintaining and preserving local tradition and diversity, harnessing and rewarding authenticity. Recently, the UNWTO experts presented current research and shed light on the latest trends. They successfully presented models and case studies on four main areas, each addressing a specific session. These included the challenges of food tourism, best practices, professional training and innovative product development. Bangladesh, therefore, has the potential to be an ideal destination for food connoisseurs. Historically, ancient Bengali diets included rice, fish, honey, dairy and vegetables. The region was an administrative and commercial bastion of South Asia during early Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms and later Muslim Sultanates. Mughal cuisine developed in Bengal after the establishment of the province of Mughal Bengal in 1576, as part of the Mughal Empire. Dhaka played an important role in influencing Bengali food with Mughal elements. The British Empire ruled the region for nearly 200 years between the 18th and 20th centuries, during which the

In the lap of nature

The Windsor Castle is surrounded by the majestic Windsor Great Park. Though the origin of the park is unclear, it was possibly used as a hunting ground by Saxon kings in the 1300s. A perfect place for rejuvenating, the park is frequented by the young and old alike for walks and picnics. Virginia Water Lake nearby is also a place of immense natural beauty. If you like idyllic settings, this is the place for you. You can spend the entire day here and recharge your tired nerves. If you want to spend your day at leisure after exploring the castle, carry a book with you and sit on the lush green grass or a traditional wooden bench and spend a pleasant afternoon with your loved ones during the famed English summer months.
