December, 2019 marks the 48th anniversary of Bangladesh’s victory in the 1971 War of Liberation against the Pakistani occupation army. This day marks the culmination and the ultimate victory of the Bengali people’s protracted struggle for emancipation from subjugation and oppression by the Pakistani occupation forces. Through celebration of this day amid much enthusiasm the country declares to the whole world how proud the Bangladesh people about their success in vanquishing the enemy of our freedom. It is a time to pay homage to the three million people who laid down their lives so that we may taste the fruits of liberty. It is time to remember the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the four national leaders who led the nation in those turbulent days when the Pakistan army, with all its might, viciously descended upon the innocent Bengalis whose only crime was to seek the most basic of human right for themselves and their progenies—the right to self-determination.

Bangladesh also remembers, on this day, the country’s foreign friends for their support during the crucial nine months of the war. Bangladesh particularly recalls neighbouring India’s generous and fearless support in sheltering and caring for the millions of refugees who were encamped in the Indian soil. The words of tribute will be incomplete if Bangladesh does not recognise and reminisce the sacrifices of the Indian Army shoulder to shoulder with the Bengali Mukti Bahini in the joint force. A word of thanks is due to the international community and the media who were a tower of strength at our hour of need. They did a tremendous catalytic job of securing goodwill for Bangladesh’s cause for which no word of gratitude would be enough.

This momentous occasion is also a befitting occasion for the people of Bangladesh to take stock of how far this nation of about 160 million people now – then 75 million – has progressed in these last nearly five decades. The economy has progressed well regardless of natural adversities like floods and cyclones. This country has developed a world-class apparel industry in this period and made giant strides in increasing agricultural productivity to be able to almost feed its entire doubled population. It has had other successes also in social sectors and in building an industrial base for producing many essential consumers as well as intermediate products, and even some capital equipment. It is currently showing promise in new areas like shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, information technologies (IT) and outsourcing business. Bangladesh’s goal is to address the challenges of further progress through establishing a truly healthy democratic political culture that conforms to the spirit of 1971.

Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar

Located one-hour from Dhaka in an airplane, Cox’s Bazar is famous for its long natural sandy sea beach, which stretches for more than 120 km. The beach gets busy from November to early March. It boasts of many luxurious five-star hotels some of which are international chain hotels. Surfing, swimming, fishing and general aquatic revelry are the most obvious options. However, if you’d much rather keep your feet dry, there are several other nearby attractions so long as you’re willing to walk. The nearby villages all have Buddhist temples that are well worth a look as well as local craftspeople who create all sorts of wares for your perusal.

Singapore to Cameron Highlands

A nine-hour drive coach ride may sound exhausting, but once you reach Cameron Highlands, the effort seems to be worth. Away from the hustle and bustle of Singapore, the place is blessed with coolest weather. Hugely popular for strawberries and its tea plantations, Cameron Highlands is a place for family fun. There is a lavender garden too, which sheds light on medicinal and therapeutic uses of lavender. Other attractions here include mossy forest, Parit waterfall, Robinson waterfall, time tunnel-the local museum and butterfly garden. Don’t miss the little carts selling all kinds of burgers: they are really delicious.

East-meets-East Sometimes, we search far and wide for something that might actually be inside us, around us, so close to us that its nearness blinds us to its magnificence. But at Osaa, we have always cherished our provenance – our Indianness that makes us so distinct. This undying obsession with the rich textiles, colours and embroideries of our country then found strong resonance when we discovered the classical arts of the Orient – an East-meets-East amalgam that was fated to happen. It was serendipity at first sight. The end result? Not a piece of clothing but wearable art to match the sanctity of the occasions you’re going to remember forever. A timeless legacy meant for your present but also to hand down through generations. A piece of craftsmanship that only works to amplify your oncein-a-lifetime occasions and be part of your glorious memories forever. A story told through bridal couture crafted with love and care, possibly encompassing Adarsh’s fascination for the abstract and asymmetrical, enveloped in the kind of beauty that is rare and enduring. The muse we create for understands why character trumps beauty – one will fade while the other will only shine brighter with time. She knows the devil lies in the details, that the meeting point for the classic and the modern is a timeless one, that our shared Indian heritage of embroideries, weaves, prints, dyes, colours and silhouettes deserve a canvas like her. She travels the world but her heart lies in the east. She sees art as not something to be hung up on bare, white walls; she carries it on herself. In fact, she’d probably make you wonder: is she art herself? About Adarsh A textile interpreter who sees storytelling through the lens of fashion, Adarsh Makharia has over two decades of experience in textile development. His

label is committed to giving a voice to traditional craftsmanship and artisanal techniques through a vocabulary that’s definitively modern and singularly distinctive. He has taken his strength and love for indigenous crafts and textiles to create this labour of love that sits at the vantage point of classic and modern, with a strong colour essence all the way through. He believes that to grow, you must help people around you rise as well. And so, the karigars he works with are entrepreneurs in themselves – having helped them open bank accounts over 15 years ago, setting off on a path of empowerment. An observer of people and the stories they live, Adarsh enjoys the simple things in life, with a dash of drama – and you will find exactly this in his creations that look to the past for references, are meant for the present, but will continue to be relevant in the future. Adarsh runs an exclusive studio in Kolkata, and supplies to Ogaan, Carma (Delhi), Aza (Mumbai), Deval (Ahmedabad), and Yaffa (Raipur).

London to the Cotswolds

About 1.5 hours by train will take you to one of the lovely English countrysides. Think of Cotswolds and about 750 green and pleasant square miles straddling Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire comes to mind. Each county has its own unique charm, but for a textbook weekend stick to Gloucestershire, land of Jilly Cooper, honey-coloured stone cottages and retired rock stars. There are various things to immerse yourself in: go leaf-peeping at Westonbirt Arboretum, take a clay pigeon-shooting lesson at the Cotswold Clay Club and coo over grazing cattle as you drive into Minchinhampton.

And all occupations left behind their own marks on the slate of this country, giving it a variety of colours and flavours and sights to call its own. Some of the most beautiful forts, in fact, were gifts to this land by Mughal emperors.

Hajiganj Fort

Bangladesh has its fair share of architectural personality in the form of forts such as the Hajiganj Fort in Narayanganj. Also known as Khizrpur Fort and located at the western banks of the Shitalakkha river, the Hajiganj Fort has all the characteristics of being a water fort. It was estimated to have been built in the period of Islam Khan

Sonakanda Fort

Another river fort in the same locality of Narayanganj, this time on the eastern banks of the Shitalakkha river, Sonakanda Fort is built with somewhat more structure than the one we discussed above. While the fort is difficult to date back for certain, it may be a safe assumption that this too was built in the Mughal times and to safeguard Dhaka and Narayanganj from pirates. With thick walls and a massive artillery platform with a gateway to the north, it seemed to have served the purpose well. One can see thick, massive walls to hold or defend the fort with loopholes to fire at the enemy. A major attraction of this fort is its artillery platform. A smaller, spherical platform leads to the main platform where cannons of higher strength were kept aimed at

Idrakpur Fort

40

Situated in Munshiganj, the Idrakpur river fort was built in the 1660s and lives on till now. Bengal, under the Mughals was a very wealthy location and was frequently the target for pirates. Built by Mir Jumla II, the fort was part of a triangular defensive strategy in order to defend the vulnerable Ichamoti and Meghna waters from pirates. The pirates used this waterway to make their way through the Shitalakkha rivers into Dhaka, looting important cities like Bikrampur and Sonargaon on the way. The other two forts completing the triangle were Sonakanda and Hajiganj, in Narayanganj. A notable part of the fort is a circular drum in the eastern portion, used for mounting ammunition. Legend states that there was a set of stairs at the foot of this drum which led to a room where more ammunition was kept in store. It is also said that this room was linked to a secret tunnel which led to the Lalbagh Fort.

Lalbagh Fort

A 17th century Mughal fort, facing the Buriganga river, the construction of this fort was started by Subahdar Muhammad Azam Shah, third son of Emperor Aurangzeb. His successor, Shaista Khan, however, abandoned the structure in an incomplete state, deeming it unlucky, when his daughter Pari Bibi passed away in it; it remains unfinished to this date. Three architectural monuments within the complex were finished: the Mausoleum of Pari Bibi, the Diwan, or Hall of Audience and the three-

It was mentioned that soldiers that tried to escape the British army through this route never returned, and neither did the search parties sent after them. The passages are now sealed. The fort is worth a tour and many guided tours are available at the venue.

is renowned all over the world for its several Buddhist heritages. Many significant discoveries relating to Buddhism have been made in the country. The discoveries have added significantly to our knowledge of the history and chronology of ancient Bangladesh and various aspects of her Buddhist life and culture. Shalban Vihara in C0milla is one of these discoveries. An important heritage site in Bangladesh, Shalban Vihara is located about eight km west of Comilla town in the low hills named Mainamati-Lalmai range. This range is dotted with more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements dating from 8-12 century AD. About 1,200 years ago, King Bhava Deva, the fourth ruler of the early-Deva dynasty, built Shalban Vihara on 168 sq m of land. It was the royal palace for the early Buddhist students. This site, previously called Shalban Rajar Bari, was identified as a Buddhist monastery after archaeological excavations and later termed as Shalban Vihara from the terracotta seals and copper plates discovered here. Its original name is supposed to have been Bhava Deva Mahavihara after the 4th king of the early Deva dynasty who ruled this region from the mid-7th to mid-8th centuries AD. It was built near the outskirts of Devaparvata, the Samatata capital bordering the Lalambi forest.

(Above and right) Salban Vihara, Mainamati Ruins

Antiquities dug up from Mainamati ridge have established its value as a potential archaeological site. The copper plate inscription of Ranavankamalla Harikaladeva was discovered as early as 1803. In 1875, ruins of what was supposed to be a small brick fort were found in the Kotbari mound, along with some typical Mainamati terracotta plaques. It was, in fact, another monastery. Of the 13 copper plates recovered from Mainamati excavations, no less than eight were from Shalban Vihara, four from Charpatra Mura and one probably from Ananda Vihara. Of the nearly 400 coins found at Mainamati, about 350 were collected from Shalban Vihara which included a few gold coins of the Guptas, Devas and the Khadgas. There were also several bronze miniatures excavated from Shalban Vihara. Any description of Mainamati will remain incomplete if the three marvels recently discovered were not described. These include two of metallurgical skill and one of stone sculpture. The stone sculpture is of a standing Buddha and discovered in the Rupban Mura

excavations. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that this is the only sculpture approximating the classical Gupta Buddha image in Bangladesh, or for that matter, Bengal as a whole. The other two marvels are a bronze colossal Vajrasattva image discovered in the ruins of Bhoja Vihara in 1994, and a huge bell found at Rupban Kanya Mura. The 1.5m high sitting Vajrasattva is a wonder of bronze casting, probably dating to 10th -11th century AD. There is another similar, though mutilated (only the head is preserved) bronze image, a large life-size bronze head of Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara, which has traces of gold plating on the polished surface. This was collected from the Bairagi Mura mound. A bronze bell weighing about half a ton can be dated back to the 10th -11th century AD. Though Paharpur has the largest number of stone sculptures and terracotta plaques found in Bangladesh, an astounding number of important inscriptions, coins and miniature bronzes have been hauled from Mainamati, unequalled to any site in Bengal

In the case of the Shalban Vihara excavations, for instance, more than 300 coins - gold, silver (the most), and copper - testify to the use a regular currency. This has revolutionised our long-held idea of Bengal's currency system, which was based for long on the absence of Pala and Sena coins. It now appears that at least the southeastern part of Bengal had a flourishing currency system, indicating a thriving economy. Also, the discovery of both the Pattikera and Harikela silver coins at Shalban Vihara has helped clarify our understating of both the coinages. Every year many tourists from home and abroad visit Shalban Vihara. The Department of Archaeology has established a museum near the site where they have displayed the relics found in and around the Shalban Vihara. The government of Bangladesh has taken the initiative to mark the Shalban Vihara as a World Heritage Site.

Sylhet

has a very interesting and rich history, before the conquest by the Muslims; it was ruled by local chieftains. In 1303, the great Saint Hazrat Shah Jalal came to Sylhet from Yemen with a band of 360 disciples to preach Islam and defeated the then Raja Gour Gobinda. Nestled in the picturesque Surma Valley amidst scenic tea plantations and lush green tropical forests, greater Sylhet is a prime attraction for all tourists visiting Bangladesh. Laying between the Khasia and the Jaintia hills on the north, and the Tripura hills on the south, Sylhet breaks the monotony of the flatness of this land by a multitude of terraced tea gardens, rolling countryside and the exotic flora and fauna. Here the thick tropical forests abound with many species of wildlife, spread their

spectacular confluence of landscape, sand and sea, Sur is the capital of the Al Sharqiyah Governorate of Oman. It has been the maritime hub of Oman since the bygone days. Sur has always fascinated travellers as it is such a place where the journey is the destination as you make many exciting discoveries en route.

66

As you leave Muscat, Oman’s enchanting capital, taking the Quriyat highway, immerse yourself in picture-postcard landscapes and turning the pages of the beautiful canvas of nature. Just a few kilometres before Quriyat, take a diversion at the main junction properly signposted towards Sur. The first major sight just off the main highway is the Bimmah sink hole (also called Hawiyat Najim), one of the many sink holes Oman is endowed with. Amidst green environs and a municipal garden, the giant limestone crater has steps to descend to a deep crystal-clear pool fit for swimming. At the nearby Fins beach (or the White beach), tourists can camp or enjoy fishing. For those who want to experience the true joy of being in nature’s lap, Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Shab are the next stops on the route. Wadi Shab, cuddled between two biscuit-coloured long stretch of rocky cliffs on either side, is one of Oman’s popular wadis. Every scene in the vicinity makes for a picture-perfect postcard. The wadi combines the attraction of coastal pockets with inland wonders. The entire stretch of the wadi has seven pools of shimmering, emerald-green waters studded with boulders. Wadi Tiwi, located a couple kilometres south of Wadi Al Shab, has the same emerald pools, lush flora and plunging canyons. Half an hour from Wadi Shab is the ancient town of Qalhat, which was Oman’s first capital and was once visited by the celebrated traveller Ibn Batutta. This July, Qalhat was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visible from the highway itself, Qalhat houses the shrine of Bibi Mariam, known to be an elderly woman who built a mosque. Potted history

Leafing through pages of history, one can find that the Phoenicians established this expansive city, and Malik bin Fahim Al Azdi made it his capital in 2500 BC during his reign. Sur also served as a thriving gateway to Oman, the first port of call for boats on their return from East Africa and India. People of Sur were distinguished from other Omani seafarers by their ship-building skills. Little wonder then, sea vessels had probably been built from the era of the shipwrights of

Adventure Bimmah Sinkhole Located south of Quriyat in the town Bimmah, this natural limestone crater is quite unique and is great spot to take a quick dip.

Eat Fast Food Shawarma kebabs, mezze and dhal – it’s affordable, flavorsome, just perfect washed down with Omani black tea or a fresh fruit juice – and Sur has plenty of these places.

Shop Ladies’ Souq With its traditional perfume shops, gold souq and Arab clothing stores, the Ladies' Souq is a fascinating part of town to wander around.

Wadi Shab is cuddled between two coloured long stretch of rocky cliffs on either side main entrance to the wilayat on the desert road. Sur’s creek, with two watchtowers on adjacent hillocks, offers a picturesque scenery. A big stretch of unpolluted beach with a promenade allows tourists to enjoy refreshing sea breeze. Towards the far end, there are canopies and cafeterias, and across the other side is the magnificent lighthouse located in the scenic village of Aijah. This fairyland village can be accessed by boats or over the spectacular suspension bridge called Khor Al Batha. A tour of the village’s labyrinth of alleys reveals many splendid old houses with carved doors and arabesque windows. But the lighthouse silhouette against the bobbing dhows in water is a sight to behold.

Whimsical weddings of

Bengal

As the winter has already started slowly making its presence felt in Kolkata, the city is all gearing up to embrace another wedding season. The wedding invitation cards have been sent for printing, the invitees’ list has been prepared and, now, it’s time for bridal shopping to look your best on your D-day. A host of deep, meaningful rituals seeped in culture and tradition are performed amidst riot of colourfully elegant and immensely creative decorations. The Bengali weddings are celebrations of colour, camaraderie and beauty above all else. The attire of the Bengali bride is one of the most regal and elegant things that transforms her into a Goddess.
