YOUR Experience

Here’s a look at the most popular visa services that can enhance the overall application experience for visa applicants The SMS update option allows you to track the status of your visa application with updates sent to their phone on the movement of their passport for processing. The SMS and email alerts text sent to applicants is currently only in English. ‘visa-ready’

When planning your travels, you always book flights and hotels in advance. Do the same for visas. Most countries accept visa applications up to 90 days before your date of travel. So don’t wait until the last minute.

for youR

next trip Travel has become an integral part of our lives. Most families now take a holiday at least once a year, if not more. Most working professionals travel for business and a lot of this travelling is done internationally, which means everyone needs one very important piece of documentation—a visa. We have a few pieces of advice that can help you get visa-ready for your next foreign trip. After all, who better than VFS Global? We do this every day!

Check the consulate/ embassy website for turnaround times

Stay updated about visa status Once your application is submitted, you can track its progress through VFS Global’s online tracking service. The status will be updated as and when your passport is ready for collection/delivery. Be aware that VFS Global cannot track your application while it is being assessed within an Embassy or Consulate.

Each country has a different timeline for its visa processing, and these timelines are clearly mentioned on their websites, providing you the information required to apply for your visa well in advance. Be aware that during peak season visa processing can take longer than anticipated.

Appointments Select countries require applicants to schedule an appointment with the Visa Application Centre to submit an application. Once scheduled, we highly recommend being at the centre 15 minutes prior the appointed time to avoid missing your slot. Please note the number of available appointment slots is decided at the Embassy’s or Consulate’s discretion.

Making a list, checking it twice A checklist of the documentation required for visa applications for each country is available on VFS Global’s website. Be sure to carry all the requisite documentation to submit along with the duly filled application form. Check your passport’s validity. Many countries require a valid passport six months after your return date.

Use VFS Global’s services for a smooth process VFS Global offers a range of additional services, designed to help you at every step of the visa application process (see Page 6 for most popular visa services). Whether you require assistance with your application, or need a visa on priority, we are happy to help.

Are you a Privilege Program member? Members of VFS Global’s Privilege Program can avail of a host of meaningful benefits aimed at alleviating anxieties and enhancing the travel experience. Services include access to a specialised 24x7 Global Travel SOS Helpline for emergencies while travelling and personalized services in Premium Lounges from dedicated relationship managers, who personally assist applicants with the entire visa process and more. How to detect you are possibly dealing with a scamster • When you receive emails with job offers or immigration promises from fabricated email IDs via personal email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, .co.in, etc.) • When advance payments to personal bank accounts are demanded with the threat of visa application rejection or deportation • When you receive pixelated and out-of-proportion VFS Global logo on the fabricated job offer letters and contracts.

Don’t fall

cautious T for fraud, be

ravelling to foreign shores, be it for further education, or new job opportunities,

has long been an aspiration for several individuals. As the world’s largest

outsourcing and technology services

company for visa processing, VFS Global has observed a year-on-year growth in immigration-related travel requests in

traditionally popular countries as well as emerging markets.

The flip side to this dream for several gullible youngsters and job-seekers in India, though, remains the threat of fraud. Over the last year, VFS Global has continually faced the issue of scammers posing as employees or associates of the organisation and embezzling innocent applicants.

Always remember

VFS Global staff is not authorised to guarantee jobs or immigration prospects to any customer. Applicants are also urged never to publish their passport or visa application numbers on public domains or social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook, as scammers are constantly on the lookout for this. Remember, VFS Global never asks for up-front payments via mail or phone. Applicants are advised that VFS Global has extensive safeguards in place to protect applicants’ personal data. The company is compliant with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, and has put in stringent security systems to abide by the legislation.

Misusing VFS Global’s trusted name in the visa space, such scammers lure unsuspecting aspirants with the false promise of overseas settlement. An alltoo-frequent modus operandi involves a scammer using new software and other technology, to clone VFS Global’s web page and mask their phone numbers, so it appears that the call has indeed come from an official VFS Global line. The victim is then asked to verify the number on the official website, leading him/her to further believe the caller. The initial call is backed by fabricated job offer letters and official looking documentation sent via email. To show acceptance of the job offer or immigration opportunity, the email states that the applicant will have to make an upfront payment and share personal information to take things forward. Most applicants unfortunately fall victim to such scams, and pay large sums of money to the fraudsters in the hope of receiving their visa/immigration papers. VFS Global takes such duplicity very seriously and makes a continual effort to reach out to victims and potential applicants to warn them against such shams.

I 2019

Bucket list

Each New Year comes with new trends in travel destinations. So what’s hot for 2019? Words: Joanna Lobo

Poland It’s not a traveller’s first choice when visiting Europe or even Eastern Europe. However, Poland has all the charm of a European country with an extra dose of history and culture added in. It is also a hospitable, friendly and safe country. “There is so much history, diversity of climate and things to do. More than anything else, it is really affordable,” says independent writer Aarti Kapur Singh. Above all, Poland, which turns 100 this year, is a must-visit for anyone interested soaking in some culture. It has 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including museums, castles and historical spaces that weren’t destroyed by the Second World War (some that were destroyed, like the Royal Castle of Warsaw, have been rebuilt). No other country can give such an accurate representation of the horrors of WWII, best realised at the Auschwitz concentration camps.

f you are a seasoned traveller, chances are you are already planning your holidays for the coming year. Choosing where to put a pin in the world map can be tough. Should you go with the crowd and follow the trend or discover your own oasis of quiet?

Each year puts a new destination under the spotlight: Vietnam was hot a few years back, then Greece, Portugal and other European countries. Meanwhile, Asian hotspots like Thailand and Singapore continue to be preferred destinations for those seeking an inexpensive holiday. If you need help planning a trip, here are some countries that deserve attention.

Palestine Figures published by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s annual tourism report highlight that Palestine is the fourth fastest growing destination in the world. The country saw a 25.7 per cent rise in tourists in 2017. Travel writer and editor, Supriya Sehgal believes 2019 will be about travelling to a seemingly difficult nation, and Palestine fits the bill. There’s more to the country than just the headlines—it has a rich culture, fascinating history, great food and is a profound pilgrimage spot (for all faiths). You can take a go at local food (especially the stretchy ice cream) at Ramallah, take a guided political tour, hike along Abraham’s Path and enjoy Middle Eastern delicacies. “Beyond the West Bank, other places to explore are the towns of Nablus and Jericho: Nablus for the old city, its markets and street food, and Jericho for the fact that it is the lowest city on earth (400 metres below the sea level),” she adds.

Uzbekistan A recent survey by the Lonely Planet magazine ranked Uzbekistan as the second best tourist destination in Asia. Much of this is owed to the changes in the country’s tourism sector – visas (30day) are obtainable online, new schemes allow for transit visa-free entry up to five days, there are new air routes and the rail network is expanding too. “Tashkent is now a four-hour direct flight away from Mumbai, courtesy Uzbekistan Airways. You can get a visa in merely two days now,” says freelance lifestyle writer Priyanka Agarwal. She advises visiting the country’s blue-shaded mosques, Gur-eAmir mausoleum in Samarkand, which is said to be a prototype of the Taj Mahal and also exploring the underrated vegetarian dishes of their cuisine.

Iceland Europe’s most sparsely populated country is enjoying a surge of popularity thanks to shows like Game of Thrones. On its own, Iceland is a treasure trove of natural attractions. “It has so much diversity – glaciers, mountains, hot springs, geysers, volcanoes, waterfalls – it will appeal to any nature lover,” says Divyakshi Gupta, a travel blogger and social media consultant. Her suggestions include visiting the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, and going diving/snorkelling in the Silfra Fissure—a rift between two tectonic plates with the clearest water in the world. “The primary reason to visit is the dynamic changes in airfare (Iceland’s budget transatlantic airline Wow Air has been offering cheap introductory fares). Earlier accessibility was an issue but with airlines offering affordable fares, things have changed,” she adds.

New Zealand The sparsely populated country has breathtaking scenery, from fjords and forests to hot springs and volcanoes. It offers a unique South Pacific blend of cultures, focused on the Maoris, besides good food and great wine. Tripadvisor ranks it as second best in the world for travel experiences, which include a fourhour food tour of Auckland and a half-day kayak tour from Taup to the Mori Carvings. Beyond it all, New Zealand is famed for its adventure tourism. The newest adventure activity is the Catapult in Queenstown, which involves being hurled 60 miles per hour through the air across the Nevis Valley. If looking for something tamer, there is a tandem parasail flight over the Bay of Islands, white water rafting on the Kaituna river and rolling down Mt Ngongotaha in a giant inflatable ball.

For many, Bata is a household name; while growing up, it is highly likely that your school shoes, college footwear, maybe even your current rain gear, came home in a Bata shopping bag. Today, Bata feels like a home-grown brand

A

little-known fact is that Bata originated in Zlín, a city in southeastern Moravia in the Czech Republic. It was founded by local

While the Bata brand has grown leaps and bounds, becoming renowned worldover, Zlín has proudly maintained the Bata factories that put their little town on the map. The owners, well aware of how many feet their shoes have adorned, and how beloved their brand is, have opened the factory doors to visitors who want to see where it all began. For the history-buffs out there, the most important facts about the history of Bata are recorded and displayed in the Museum of Shoemaking, which attractively presents the values and principles behind the success of the company and the development of the town.

A Tip for a Trip For the flora and fauna fanatics, Zlín gives you the perfect setting to soak in the antiquity of the Czech Republic when you visit the historical Lešná Château, which is also the gateway to the region’s most renowned zoo. Well known for being divided as per continents, the zoo provides a unique ambience of having Africa, Australia, South America and Asia just a few steps apart.

There are several wonderful attractions in Zlín, in addition to the legacy of Bata. Several mobile phone apps are available to take you through the city, or you can book a guided tour and visit local landmarks, such as the Bata Skyscraper, the Large Cinema, the Department Store, the Market, the House of Art and the villa quarter of Letná. Scenic routes are another proud offering in Zlín. You can float down the beautiful Bata Canal from Otrokovice to Skalice, or cycle on the arterial bicycle path that runs along the canal. For the adventurous souls who want to do it all, the two can be combined to explore the route partly on a bike and partly by boat.

Singapore Zoo

Orchard Road is as famous as Champs

It’s the world’s best rainforest zoo, with eclectic sections like the Fragile Forest, the human-like Orangutans (who can be your breakfast companions) and the Polar Bear habitat. Meet proboscis monkeys, Asian elephants, pygmy hippos, sun bears and the adorable pandas—Kai Kai and Jia Jia.

Without leaving the general area, go on a River Safari, which is also a part of Wildlife Reserves (and sister attraction to the Zoo and Night Safari). Get wet in a boat journey on the Amazon River Quest, which takes you through the rainforest so cleverly recreated. Want more? Then do the night safari! All aboard the tram that rolls through habitats where you can get on and get off at designated stops to marvel at nocturnal animals and what they get up to, when the rest of the world

is sleeping! Do not forget to catch the beautifully choreographed creatures of the night theatre show.

Singapore Flyer Reams have been written about this giant wheel. Tourists rave about it to their friends. The Singapore Flyer ride is a must-do. I went one step further. I tried out the world’s first Full-Butler dining experience in the skies. French bubbly accompanied the appetising entrees of scallops and other seafood. The next round when our cabin came to Ground Zero, the butlers brought in Chicken Sea Bass topped with XO sauce

and roast Duck comfit. The cost of dinner for two is $352. My verdict? A memorable dinner, because on this spinning wheel, you get priority boarding, a choice of four course Western/Chinese/Vegetarian menu and in one hour you get two rotations! The 7 pm experience is better than the later one, since you get to see most of Singapore in the evening that softly escapes into twilight.

What is Falconry? A simulated hunt with accompanying commentary reveals all. It’s as unforgettable as the High Flyers show, which features the largest number of performing birds in a single creatively choreographed act! Asia’s (perhaps the world’s) biggest bird park is home to over 5,000 magnificent birds across 400 species and also has a free-flying aviary that is spread across twenty hectares.

Jurong Bird Park

Too far to walk? The Hop-on-Hop-off tram ride helps you discover the feathered friends at your own pace. Explore the kingdom of penguins and meet birds like cassowary and the emu, that are actually descendants of the dinosaurs.

It’s impossible to ever forget the King of the Skies show, daily put on twice here. Birds of prey like eagles, hawks and falcons soar in the skies and on invisible commands swoop down in flying loops.

cityscape Sentosa Ten years ago, Sentosa was known as the suburban outpost of Singapore. Now it’s called the Ministry of Fun! The Sentosa Line cable car connects all of the island’s multiple attractions. Private beach clubs, welcoming golf courses, a yachting marina and at least 20 deluxe hotels offer comfortable stays to explore the likes of Adventure Cove Park, Insect Kingdom, Butterfly Park, Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, etc. And then, there is Universal Studios! It’s got seven themed zones—Hollywood, New York, Sci-Fi City, Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away and Madagascar. There are daily parades, nightly fireworks, and it gets so very crowded on weekends.

ISLAND HOPPING Did you know that Singapore is one of the only three city states in the world? The other two are Monaco and Vatican city. Did you know that Singapore is not one island, but sixty? Yessir! Most are uninhabited but some of them, such as Pulau Ubin, can be visited for day trips or overnight stays. Pulau Ubin is a short ride from Changi Village on the east coast of Singapore proper, and has walking trails and is popular with those wanting to know how Singapore looked many years ago. Other islands include Ghost Island, Junk Island (made from landfill) and Frog Island.

A dish of traditional Satay food

is supposed to have originated. Its elegant Raffles Hotel location with 1920s Malayan plantations ambience brings a smile to my soul. No visit to Singapore is complete without a late night out at Harry’s Bar on 28 Boat Quay. Live bands and the river flowing gently by make the bar so every special. There are so many rooftop bars offering a diversity of experiences. Here are some of the best: Beers that make you say cheers! LeVel 33 is the highest microbrewery in the world, situated on the top floor of Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower One. They serve an amazing range of creatively crafted house beers, from dark stouts to light ales. To make the experience complete, dig into their pub grub— gnocchi, steaks, cod fish, seafood. Want to get higher? Like 63 floors high? 1-Altitude at the top of One Raffle Place is hip, hot, happening over three different levels and numerous bars. On weekend nights, the dance floor is packed with movers and shakers. Another one just like it, is Ce La Vi, nestled on top of the Marina Bay Sands complex. You don’t have to pay to enter this chillout lounge, poolside terrace and restaurant, but drinks start at $S20. Not bad considering the view with a whew!

Get an Express Pass to skip the line and get on to the world’s most adrenaline pumping roller coaster ride where you are upside down all the time. Gulp! It’s expensive to take the cable car into Sentosa but it’s the most fun. Start from Mount Faber station and fly through the air for a spectacular view of Singapore, the harbour and its docks as you arrive at Sentosa.

Nightlife Still rocking till the wee hours of the morning, there’s no moral police here. Just tourists and locals alike letting their hair down and getting spirits up. My favourite still is Long Bar where the Singapore Sling

The Singapore Flyer

Jurassic Park of Universal Studios, Sentosa

Food and more food! Chinese, Malay, Indian, Singaporean… there is no end to the food scene. There’s a cuisine for every taste and budget! Street food is safe, very easy on the pocket and a melting pot of Singapore’s diverse cultures. Go to Maxwell Food Centre and gobble up goodies like Tian Tian Chicken Rice. Missing Indian food? Biryanis, dals, dosa restos abound at Quartier Little India. More hawker fare (Korean, Filipino, Japanese) awaits you at Lau Pa Sat in the Central Business District. Last but not the least, Satay Street, parallel to Lau Pa Sat serves finger licking satay skewers. Yum. If you are into gourmet food, you can splurge at so many celebrity chef restaurants. Jade restaurant at the Fullerton Hotel serves sublime Cantonese cuisine: Peking duck, lobster, crispy pork belly and sauteed scallops. They even offer a dim sum set lunch at S$ 58 per person. Ever eaten fried carrot cake with XO sauce? Taste Paradise may be a kitsch name, but this fine dining restaurant located in Ion Orchard serves up mouth-watering dishes

MARINA BAY SANDS The world’s most strikingly designed hotel is a tourist destination unto itself. For foodies, it offers the world’s finest collection of restaurants under one roof, most of them run by celebrity chefs. For those who flirt with Lady Luck, there is the world’s most expensive standalone Casino! Since it opened, the world’s largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines has amply contributed to the bottom line profitability. The resort includes a 2,561-room hotel, a 1,300,000 sq ft convention-exhibition centre, 800,000 sq ft area of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall (shop till you drop), a museum, two large theatres, two floating crystal pavilions and art-science exhibits. The icing on the cake is the world’s longest elevated swimming pool on the 57th Floor. Imagine swimming in an infinity pool that offers an aerial view of all of Singapore spread out below!

like Classic Shark’s Fin in Supreme Broth, Crisp-fried Tofu in Black Truffle Sauce, Pan-seared Foie Gras with Peking Duck Reduction and many more.

Massages All that sightseeing and shopping deserves a reward. What better than a massage? At the Lush Spa, voted as Singapore’s top spa and located inside the Singapore Polo Club, two masseuses took turns de-kinking my tired muscles. One pampered my head and shoulders. The other performed an extremely professional reflexology on the soles of my feet. 90 minutes later, I was a new bionic man! On the final day before catching my flight out I got another reflexology treatment at Spa Nes, which is open 24x7! Located on the second level of Furama Riverfront Hotel, this mega spa club has it all— thermal pools, cryo pools, dining cove and dedicated rooms for Thai massages and foot reflexology. Keeps the jet lag away! Nov-Dec 2018 / 27

Making UK visa services

more

digital

In an exclusive interview with VFS Global, David Ratcliffe, Regional Director – South & South East Asia, UK Visas and Immigration, speaks about the tremendous growth in travel from India to the UK, and the focus on more efficient visa services

What will be the main changes in the UK visa process within the next one year? In a word—transformation. UKVI and VFS Global have been working together very closely in order to create an online, integrated application process. UKVI have developed and continued to refine our online application form, AccessUK, and by the end of 2018, AccessUK will be integrated with the VFS Global website to improve the online journey for our customers. After completing their application form customers will flow effortlessly onto VFS Global’s website where they will be able to book their appointment slot in one of our 18 service points across India and view and purchase any additional services offered by VFS Global which are intended to make

their application process quicker, more convenient and more comfortable. UKVI and VFS Global have also been working to roll out a digital system to all customers across India. This will allow customers to self-upload their documents on VFS Global’s website so when they come to submit their biometrics at a Visa Application Centre they only have to bring their passport. Customers can continue to upload documents to support their application up until the day of their appointment at the service points. Alternatively, VFS Global will upload a customer’s documentation, for a fee, when they attend their appointment at one of our service points. This exciting development means customers no longer have to submit their documentation so no more lost documents, though we will still have to take your passport in order to place a vignette in the passport should a customer be granted a visa.

Customer service is a really important focal point for VFS Global. Is the same true for UKVI? How are you working on improving customer experience? The digitisation move that I have already discussed is focused, above all, on offering a more efficient, reliable customer

service globally and in India and South Asia especially. For example, customers in Thimpu in Bhutan can now apply for Priority Visa exclusively, because we were able to digitise our visa processes and remove the need to send documents on a long trip from Delhi to Bhutan. More broadly, we have rolled out the AccessUK form worldwide, which is a more customer-friendly form, available in 18 languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and Bengali. It’s much easier to use on a tablet or smartphone too.

The UK continues to be a preferred destination for travellers in India. Can you share some insights as to the latest travel trends for the UK? Simply put, the market is booming. Our latest statistics–for the year ending June 2018–show that almost 551,000 Indian nationals were granted UK visas across all categories. That’s an increase of 10 per cent from previous year. Within that number we granted 450,000 visit visas, welcomed a 32 per cent increase in student numbers from India to the UK and saw more skilled work visas go to Indians than rest of the world combined. Together with VFS Global, we are meeting that demand well. For instance, 98 per cent of visitor visas are granted within our service standards of 15 working days from the point of visiting a VAC (or five working days with Priority Visa or one working day with Super Priority Visa)—so we can tell customers with confidence that, in almost all cases, we are doing what we say we are doing and providing a reliable service to those who apply. From the UK’s official tourism agency, Visit Britain, we see the same positive trends too. In 2017, Indian tourists spent over £450 million in the UK—that’s over INR4,300 crore. And each individual Indian traveller spends on average £808 in the UK, so we can clearly see the value of our work. In terms of destinations it will come as no surprise that London is popular. But other destinations such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, the north of England and Cornwall (my favourite) are all notably

UKVI and VFS Global have been working to roll out a digital system to all customers across India increasing in popularity too. Next year, of course, we will see the Cricket World Cup come to England and Wales. We anticipate tens of thousands of Indians travelling for this event and therefore are encouraging early applications to ensure that they don’t get caught out by the rush next summer.

UKVI has always come up with solutions to increase convenience in the visa process for applicants. Which services have been the most popular? My experience has been that visa customers care about three things— convenience, processing time and cost. And we have designed our services to give customers the greatest possible choice across these three priorities. In terms of convenience, we have 18 UK Visa Application Centres in India—more than we have in any other nation. These include optional and temporary centres that people can pay to use instead of travelling greater distances to one of the permanent centres. Furthermore, together with VFS Global we offer services like ‘Keep My Passport When Applying’ which enables customers to travel or apply for other visas during the time their UK application is being considered. For processing times, we have two fasttrack products—Priority Visa (five working days) and Super Priority Visa (one working day). Both have proved popular. The PV

Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales... and Cornwall are all notably increasing in popularity

service is available across 10 locations in India and Super Priority Visa was extended earlier this year to Pune and Bengaluru (in addition to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai), which shows how regularly our customer offer expands. In terms of cost, as I said earlier, we are committed to maintaining a core service for the basic visa fee cost. So a customer can choose not to opt for any additional services but still be confident that by paying the minimum visa fee, they can trust UKVI to turn their application around in 15 working days or less. Underpinning all of this is a programme of transformation that we are undertaking to improve our visa system. This involves investing in our processes, making them more digital and efficient, creating and using a new, more modern application form and offering additional services with VFS for customers to choose. Collectively, this will add to our customers’ ease and convenience by giving them greater options as to how and where they apply for a UK visa.

Is there an effort to further boost UK-bound tourism & in what way? Yes, and Visit Britain are heavily investing in India for that very reason. This falls into three different areas. Firstly, the ‘I Travel For’ campaign has been running across events and social media over the past few months and will continue to do so. This campaign encourages people to find out unexpected experiences and discover new motivations to visit the UK—whether that’s for fun, adventure, food, history or anything else. Secondly is the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events sector (MICE). This is a large and growing sector, as Indian companies seek to build international links and reward their most productive employees with travel overseas. Visit Britain have started to proactively target this segment. UKVI value this group as well, for example, we have a dedicated MICE scheme that offers account management and reduced documentation for trusted Nov-Dec 2018 / 29

people & places partners in return for carrying out some prechecks on the group travelling to ensure they are genuine and legitimate visitors. And thirdly, Visit Britain are really pushing destination diversity within the UK. By that we mean, “Yes, of course visit London, but why not find out somewhere new as well?” Places such as Manchester, the Peak District, Bristol and the Welsh Valleys are all lovely, distinctive places to visit as part of a UK trip. And as part of the British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS), Indian travellers can also add on a trip to the Republic of Ireland, a separate country with a whole new set of experiences, to their UK trip as well. I’m from south-west London so I know the capital very well and it is worth a visit, but why not add something new next time you go? A huge opportunity for this is the Cricket World Cup next year. India will play Pakistan at Old Trafford in Manchester next June and we know the interest here. Planning the trip–and making the visa

Together with VFS Global, we are developing specific products for students to give them affordable options

application early–is a great excuse to visit a different part of the UK and experience Virat Kohli and other legends of the game whilst doing so.

Since the UK is a big destination for students in particular, how are you promoting student travel in India? Students–and in particular Indian students–are of great importance to the UK Government, and are therefore, one of UKVI’s key customer groups. Together with British Council, every year we conduct outreach programmes across major cities in India to provide guidance to incoming students and make sure they are confident in filling out the forms and providing correct documents. In the coming months, we plan to hire additional staff and expand our video briefing activity to ensure we regularly reach more people for this goal. In terms of services, we are, together with VFS Global, developing specific products for students to give them affordable options to make this important process easier for them. The best example of this is the ‘On Demand Mobile Visa’. This is a service where VFS Global bring the biometrics process to any location the customer wants it, saving the need to travel to a VAC at all. Previously this has been aimed at business executives, but together with VFS Global we are able to provide a more studentfriendly offer hosted by Indian universities or education agents for groups of students who may find it tricky to visit a VAC.

What are the new and emerging destinations in the UK that you recommend for visitors, anything ‘off the beaten path’ perhaps? If you want to experience something more rural and quiet, you can head to the Lake District and Peak District, or picture postcard towns and cities such as York. And if you want to see snow you can do that too with places like the Scottish Highlands regularly getting significant snowfall for most of the winter. Up on Scottish peaks such as the Cairngorms, Glencoe or Aviemore, you can even do some alpine skiing.

Places such as Manchester, Peak District, Bristol and the Welsh Valleys are all lovely places to visit restaurants and culture and it has easy access down to the beaches and countryside of the Gower—a popular domestic tourism location with some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Scotland is world famous for its mountains, its whisky and its history. But there are other events, such as the North Coast 500, a stunning road tour of northern Scotland and the Highland Games every summer, where you can toss cabers, throw hammers, and join in a tug-of-war like the clan warriors of the past. For me, my favourite place to visit is Cornwall, in the south-west of England. It has everything you need for a holiday— beaches, watersports, great English food and a real sense of its own identity, that includes Cornish, its own language!

As we enter into the winter holiday season, which are the winter destinations in the UK you would recommend to tourists? It really depends what you’re after. London in winter is a favourite of many, with Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and Christmas shopping opportunities on Oxford Street rightfully enjoying international reputations.

Northern Ireland has really jumped in terms of popularity in recent years. It was a major location for the filming of Game of Thrones and there are tours and walks available for people who want to relive their own piece of Westeros. It also has natural wonders such as the Giant’s Causeway as well as man-made ones such as the shipyards that built the Titanic, for people to see.

And if you want to see snow you can do that too with places like the Scottish Highlands regularly getting significant snowfall for most of the winter. Cardiff–the capital of Wales–is a bustling and busy city with great nightlife,

Whatever you do, my advice is that you pack warm clothes before you go!

winter break

for the

soul

From skiing to walking along sandy beaches, from soaking in the beauty of the lakes to wandering around frosty moors, winter in the UK is a magical time and has plenty to offer every kind of soul Words: Anita Rao Kashi

A

s the year draws to a close and temperatures begin to plunge, it is tempting to bundle up in front of roaring fires or head to warmer climates. However, this is also the time that nature is at its glorious best and the United Kingdom has a variety of winter activities on offer for you.

Cornwall The Western most part of England, with a little bit of land jutting out into the Celtic Sea, is aptly called Land’s End. It is a cluster of jagged cliffs, promontories and coves that make for a dramatic coastline. While Cornwall is stunning throughout the year, it is even more ideal during winter when the landscape takes on a kind of wildness. Other sights here include the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Isles of Scilly, a cluster of islands off the Cornwall Coast where the Tresco Abbey Gardens are bound to mesmerise and the Eden Project on the mainland where exotic plants are grown in conservatories.

In England’s Southwest, in the Devon area, lie two fabulous national parks— Exmoor and Dartmoor. These are exposed moorlands, which are lush green and carpeted with moss and heather as well as exposed rock for much of the year. But in winter, the uneven and rugged landscape takes on a magical, frosty glow and venturing out early in the morning is well worth the effort. At sunrise, the whole place becomes surreal—the skies stretch out above the undulating land on whose frosty surface sunbeams light up for miles.

rural countryside and sprawling flatlands. While the moors and the wilderness of the coastline are equally riveting in winter, it is the Mendip Hills that are particularly spectacular. Coated in frost and blanketed by snow, the whole area looks like a white wonderland. Sink your boots in the snow through rolling fields, ancient woodland and meandering hills. If you’re up for it, exert a bit and climb one of the gentle peaks for breath-taking views of the countryside or explore the stunning caves and rivers that run underground, or head to the dramatic Cheddar Gorge, a jaw-dropping canyon.

Cumbria

Adjacent to Devon is Somerset, which shares a part of the Exmoor National Park. It is also known for its rolling hills,

Perhaps England’s most beautiful place, Cumbria earns bragging rights for its Lake District National Park, comprising 16 lakes

and over 50 large water bodies. Besides, it has a series of fells, mountains and valleys, which add to the grandeur and beauty of the district. It boasts of England’s highest mountain—Scafell Pike, and the country’s largest lake—Lake Windermere.

Scotland There cannot be talk of winter without the stunning highlands and mountains of Scotland. The most mountainous part of UK, Scotland has an astonishing number of mountain peaks and hills and is a paradise for trekkers. In winter, many of the peaks receive light to heavy snowfall and are an ideal destination. For skiers, there are numerous places such as Glencoe, Nevis, Cairngorm, Glenshee and Lecht. Heading to the Isle of Skye is also a good idea since it has stunning hills and mountain slopes.

Basalt columns at Giant’s Causeway

The northern-most part of Northern Ireland ushers in spectacular sunrises and sunsets during winter and the landscape takes on a surreal quality. Meander the countryside through walking and trekking trails or experience mysterious sights such as the Dark Hedges, the jaw-dropping Carrick a Rede bridge or the dark and desolate Dunluce Castle. But nothing can compete with Giant’s Causeway, a collection of basalt rock formations rising and jutting majestically and mysteriously out of the sea. Nov-Dec 2018 / 33

TV

The perfect binge

shows

Can’t sleep on those long flights? Here’s a look at some of the best streaming TV shows you can bingewatch to your heart’s content Words: Vinod Advani

BLACK MIRROR This series started off with a cult following of techies and millennials. By the time the third season came out, it had gone viral and mainstream. Season 1 and 2 have three episodes each. Season 3 and 4 have six episodes, testimony to the popularity of this series. In this original British Sci-fi series, each episode has a different story along with a different cast. So if you don’t like one of the episodes, you can just skip to the next one.

Words: Vinod Advani

Each episode is fascinating, an examination of the modern society we live in and the unanticipated consequences of humanity’s dependency on technology. Many have compared Black Mirror to The Twilight Zone but with more satirical themes and that assessment is somewhat accurate. All four seasons of Black Mirror, including the epic Christmas episode are available on Netflix.

STRANGER THINGS This gripping science-fiction horror series, created and directed by the Duffer Brothers, is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The first season involves the investigation into the disappearance of a 12-year-old boy named Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) who was abducted by a creature in an alternate dimension called the upsidedown. His young friends and family (his mother Joyce is played by Winona Ryder) search for him in the woods, putting their lives at risk at every strange twist and turn. The Netflix show’s first season released in July 2016 and the second season followed in October 2017. Fascinating both kids and grownups alike, this clever series feels like it was inspired by Steven Spielberg and Stephen King combined, even though most of the cast is kids.

DAREDEVIL

HOUSE OF CARDS

Adapted from the Marvel classic comics, this superhero series is an exciting adventure from the word go! Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) was blinded by radioactive substance. The other four senses take over and are raised to a superhuman level. He decides to punish the mobsters who murdered his father and dedicates his life to fighting injustice. Our blind vigilante, Daredevil, spends his days working as a lawyer and night fighting crime in the Hell’s Kitchen section of New York City. The series features some of the best choreographed action sequences you’ll find on TV. The third season is set to premiere on Netflix.

For pure political drama, nothing can beat this series, that first began in 2013. It became a monstrous global hit from the getgo, telling the story of Frank Underwood, a sleazy congressman from South Carolina, who with his wife Claire, will do just about anything to achieve power in Washington DC. Intricate plots with twisted personalities, clever writing and standout acting delivered by the entire cast, ensured it has now entered its sixth and final season, which will air late 2018. If you haven’t seen the previous five seasons, it’s highly recommended that you do so. With the recent sexual abuse controversy involving lead actor Kevin Spacey (who has been dropped from the show), Netflix has confirmed that season six will carry on without Spacey’s involvement!

Island Hopping in

Thailand

The islands of this country offer a diverse selection of activities and adventures. Which one is right for you? Words: Amanta Davis

I

f you love white sand beaches, sunshine and turquoise waters, then Thailand has ample on offer for you. With over 3,000 km of coastline and sun-soaked beaches, each island in Thailand has a unique character. Whether you want to party till dawn, eat the best Thai food or learn to dive, these islands have something for everyone.

Koh Samui Being the second-largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui is an ideal place for the first-time tourist, families, honeymooners and yoga bunnies. Known for its extravagant resorts, luxury spas, chic bars and world-class restaurants, people come to Koh Samui to relax and unwind. The island is also home to several natural and man-made attractions like the Secret Buddha Garden, the Mummy Monk, and the beautiful Namuang Waterfall. Tourists can also visit the Fisherman’s Village and explore its Walking Street Market that comes to life every Friday in the old part of Bophut Beach.

Koh Tao Meaning ‘Turtle Island’, Koh Tao is a mecca for scuba divers. The coral landscapes here are home to turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, barracudas and whale sharks. Popular dive sites here help you explore the underwater sculptures of Ocean Utopia, the wreck of HTMS Sattakut, Lighthouse Bay, Japanese

Gardens, Chumphon Pinnacles and many more. There are dozens of diving shops that provide daily trips and training courses, particularly in Mae Haad. If you’re new to diving, you can sign up at a school there and get your Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) or Scuba Schools International (SSI) Open Water certification. These courses usually take up to four days and include four ocean dives. If you’re short on time, you can opt for the one-day Discovery Dives, where you can go down 12 metres without certification.

Phuket The biggest and busiest island in Thailand, Phuket is blessed with more than 30 amazing beaches to choose from. Patong Beach, Kata, Karon and Kamala have always been the most popular, but the north of the island reveals some hidden gems for travellers searching for a more romantic atmosphere. What makes Phuket different from the others is that it offers every luxury that a traveller can think of. Celebrity-chef restaurants, five-star resorts with private butlers, glitzy bars, Phuket has it all. A great one-day excursion is to Phang Nga Bay. A distinctive feature of the bay are the limestone cliffs with their sheen, that jut vertically out of the emerald-green waters. James Bond Island and Koh Panyee are two other famous spots in this bay.

in the turquoise waters and then step on to the white sand beaches of Koh Miang (known as ‘number four’) which has simple bamboo bungalows. The largest island Koh Similan (number eight) measures around five sq. km and is highly distinguishable because of the strange rock that is shaped like Donald Duck that overlooks the famous Donald Duck bay. Koh Similan is the main island here that attracts the most tourists because it has an average water depth of just over 25 metres, making it ideal for snorkelling and diving. It also has a fantastic nature trail up the highest mountain of the Mo Ku National Park.

Merry Christmas

Cologne Cathedral Market, Germany

to All!

It’s Christmas time and these markets across the world form a perfect setting to get into the holiday spirit Words: Chhavi Nagpal

T

he season of everything white is round the corner and is bringing along with it the season to be merry. So while you reunite with your family, go shopping with your friends and immerse yourself in the merriment of Christmas, visit these markets, few of those around the world are famous for being one-stop destinations for everything that December 25 stands for.

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark On offer here are 50 stalls lined along the park’s pathways, along with a chance to meet Santa and his reindeers. The stalls here sell everything one could need around Christmas, from decorations to hot drinks to ornaments for your tree. For a true Nordic feel, there are wooden houses,

magical bells and snow-covered trees. As a 2018 special, an Alpine village complete with skis and sledges will welcome visitors along with an Alpine express and a merrygo-round. While the stalls selling decor and nibbles excite visitors enough, there are three different light shows, in complement to a traditional Pixie Band playing festive songs, that provide a complete package. And just to be a little over the top, Tivoli Gardens holds firework displays on December 25, 26 and 31.

Grand Christmas Market, Montreal, Canada The market at Esplanade at Place des Arts takes inspiration for its theme and decor from some of the grandest festive events in Europe. Down the pedestrian boulevard of St. Catherine Street, the Esplanade has 60 stalls at your service selling all kinds of Christmas essentials like tree decor, lighting, souvenirs, food to gorge on and of course, bells and socks and stockings. A live DJ at midnight and a craft workshop for artisans for them to display their handiwork, join in on the scene for your entertainment. Special attention has been paid to provisions for kids with an elves’ workshop, Santa’s sleigh and even an igloo working hard to keep them busy while you shop.

Cologne Cathedral Market, Germany The market at Cologne Cathedral, also called the Dom Cathedral market, attracts the most crowd in the city, due to its huge backdrop with the imposing and regal-looking Cologne Cathedral. Beneath the cathedral lies the largest Christmas tree on Rhineland and scattered beyond it are over 160 wood pavilions selling mulled wine, gingerbread, Christmas decorations, sweets and delicacies, gift items and handicrafts by artisans. Stalls brim with trinkets, crafts and are covered in fairy lights. All the stalls are red-roofed which makes for a breath-taking aerial view. Here, pewter pourers, wreath binders and glassblowers gather to demonstrate their art.

Frankfurt Market, Birmingham, United Kingdom The largest authentic German Christmas Market outside of Germany or Austria, brings Birmingham to life every Christmas.

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark

While Tivoli Gardens are a sight to behold all year long, the Christmas Market is definitely worth a special visit

It is held at Victoria Square every year between November to December. Birmingham has 120 stalls set up in this market selling everything from handcrafted wooden decorations and delicate glass baubles to hand-crafted leatherwork, handmade toys, jewellery and much more! The biggest attraction and fun here is Chris the singing Moose. The neighbouring craft market, set up at the same time, is at a walking distance and combined with the Frankfurt Market to light up the whole area with enthusiasm.

Winter Wonders, Brussels, Belgium For five weeks, Brussels turns itself into one huge winter land, a wonder of happiness with lots to look forward to. More than 200 chalets (they just look like them) sell festive fixes of glühwein, Belgian beers and waffles, while you bustle about and haggle over and splurge on all things Christmas. This carnival of-sorts holds something for everyone. You will find ice rink and Santa’s village to explore, all wrapped up together with a giant Christmas tree. The event is spread out

across the Bourse, Place de la Monnaie, Grand Place, Place Sainte Catherine and Marche aux Poissons. Just warm yourself up with a hot chocolate and stroll down the chalets, taking in the sights of happy faces glowing by fairy lights in frosty winds. Also, every other hour (after dark of course), Cafe in Central Beirut there is a light and sound show projected onto the back of Saint Catherine Church.

Bank of America Winter Village, Bryant Park, New York One of New York’s most well-known Christmas markets, hosted at Bryant Park, Bank of America Winter Village goes all out in European-style as an open-air market. Around 125 custom-designed kiosks sell jewellery, handicrafts and Christmas decorations from all over the world. Nearby Josephine Shaw Lowell Fountain, absolutely frozen in the winters, and the Le Carrousel, add up to the festive enthusiasm. Bryant Park’s 17,000-squarefoot outdoor rink is New York’s only free ice skating rink. An exciting addition to look forward to this year will be The Lodge, a food hall operated by Urbanspace located rink-side near the Upper Terrace. Nov-Dec 2018 / 41

greater good For the

From being a rarity a few decades ago, Corporate Social Responsibility has come a long way to become an inherent part of Indian businesses

F

rom being a philanthropy-oriented exercise of a few corporates and individuals, to driving an all-pervading social consciousness, Corporate Social Responsibility has undergone a huge transformation in India in a few short years. At its heart, CSR implies philanthropic activities, which could range from monetary donations to immersing personnel in the community and relief work or any other activity that a corporate undertakes to aid a particular community. However, the world over, the concept of CSR has gone on to include corporate citizenship, strategic philanthropy, corporate sustainability and business responsibility.

In Seraikela, Kharsawan district, Jharkhand, access to maternity and neonatal care was almost non-existent a decade ago, until a CSR initiative was put in place. The scheme has brought neonatal mortality down by over 32 per cent. ● The ‘Nanhi Kali’ project, targeted over 11 lakh girls of school-going age in 10 states, and with corporate intervention, has brought down the dropout rate to less than 10 per cent. ● Across 140 villages in some of the most drought-prone districts of the country, a series of water-harvesting structures have been constructed, benefiting over 15,000 rural families. ●

India Spends on CSR India institutionalised the concept of CSR with the passage of the Corporate Social Responsibility Act in 2013 in which companies with a net worth of Rs 500 crore and more are mandated to set aside two per cent of the company’s profit for CSR or charity. Over 1,500 listed companies spent Rs 8,897 crore towards social welfare activities, about 90% of the budgeted amount during the financial year 2017, a CII survey revealed.

In India, the traditional image of CSR has changed significantly. The country has been the pioneer in institutionalising the concept through legislation and has outlined several areas that CSR activities can be directed towards. Education and healthcare are two of the biggest sectors and attract over half of all CSR funding. But the government itself has listed several heads such as eradicating hunger, poverty and malnutrition, promoting education, improving maternal and child health, ensuring environmental sustainability, protection of national heritage, measure for

the benefit of the armed forces, promoting sports, slum area development and

In India, CSR has traditionally been seen as a philanthropic activity, but that has changed significantly

contribution to Prime Minister’s National Relief among others. Since 2013, CSR funding has seen a significant rise, and the initiatives have spanned a broad spectrum from saving the mahseer fish and shark whales to building check dams to imparting job-linked training skills to youth in the local community. As we face newer challenges, experts in the field are consulted on the next steps such as large-scale social innovation, changing inherent business practices and a having greater involvement of stakeholders through processes and strategies.
