Accomplished in ballet, modern and Indian classical dances, Ramli Ibrahim is a cultural icon who has performed internationally for four decades. As artistic director of the Sutra Dance Theatre, Ibrahim has choreographed stunning works and nurtured some of the brightest dance talents from Malaysia. He has been decorated with awards from both the governments of India and Malaysia, the most recent being the Padma Shri award from India (2018). » What has been the inspiration for you to study forms of art that were so different from each other?

I have great respect, curiosity and admiration for the best of both the traditional and modern. Though known as an Indian classical dancer, I am very much a ‘modern’ person and this can be discerned in the vision and direction I set for Sutra. I delved into ballet not as much as I wanted to dance the classical ballet repertoire (Swan Lake, Giselle

etc) but because the ballet technique and methodoly offered one of the most effective techniques in preparing the dancer’s body. However, one part of me was seeking and needed the ‘wisdom’ from the collective tradition which I found in the traditional Indian dances – first bharatanatyam and eventually, Odissi. Odissi struck the right chord in fulfilling the physical, emotional and psychical, within me. » You are recognised as a cultural icon in India as well as Malaysia-Is it difficult to incorporate cultural influences as diverse as you did in your renditions?

One does not dance in order to be a cultural icon. The association comes later after one has worked hard and followed one’s destiny to the fullest. It was dance, which had prompted me in the first place to follow my destiny wherever it took me. I guess it was difficult, but I did not realise, nor did I care, that what I was doing was difficult.

I was merely doing what I love and even

felt privileged that I had to face difficulties which I thought was an essential part of a growing process.

» Please tell us a little about the Sutra Foundation and your vision for traditional and contemporary art forms in the future.

Sutra Foundation is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The institution has been active in sustaining artistic and cultural activities in Malaysia in the last three decades. Immense care goes into crafting a Sutra Production, as you see in Odissi on High – be it in terms of impeccable design input, selection of dance talent, devising sets, costumes, lighting or graphics and marrying them to the choreographic intent to assure a flawless production. We run a successful Dance Outreach Program to empower youths living outside the main city centres, giving them access to quality education.

Next, I head out to Dier Al Qamar, the central village, which is a 30-minute car ride away. This is a typical Lebanese village, albeit less crowded, complete with a souk, churches, mosques and a museum too. Explore the cobble stoned little nooks and crannies of this pretty village on foot to experience old Lebanese’s architecture, some restored to its former glory whereas others exhibiting the marks of time and the elements. It is a sight for sore eyes. This village is a great place to buy souvenirs also. You could walk into any café for a midday coffee here or even have lunch at one of the many restaurants in the square. Post lunch, you could stroll through the village, stopping at the majestic Moussa Al Chouf –a palace that took over 60 years to build. The palace has an interesting back story – Moussa Abdel Karim Al Maamari, who at the tender age of 14 decided to spend his life restoring buildings and building them, constructed it. He was mocked at by his peers so he walked out and years later, gave Lebanon a resplendent beauty such as the Moussa Al Chouf.

The Chouf region in Lebanon, despite its glaring quaintness and charming peculiarities is a fairly large district, comprising of a number of cities and towns. A larger part of the district is covered in a natural green cover, also known as the Al Shouf Natural Cedar Reserve. This is the first destination that I head to. The natural reserve opens at 10 am, so is best visited after a quick bite at one of the restaurants which lie in close vicinity of the entrance. Both these restaurants serve authentic, fresh, no-fuss Lebanese dishes and provide a warm, welcoming ambience. At about 3 km from both the restaurants, is the beautiful reserve, carpeted in huge cedar trees apart from the 24 other tree species and with a soothing view of the mountains. It also has a considerable variety of fauna, namely leopards, wolves, deer, wild boars Indian porcupines, hyenas amongst the rest.

‫‪Head over to the Bieteddine Palace‬‬ ‫‪is a lavish construction, complete‬‬ ‫‪with mosaic floors and resplendent‬‬ ‫‪Turkish style hamaams or baths. There‬‬ ‫‪is a museum within the palace, which‬‬ ‫‪displays antique pottery, jewellery and‬‬ ‫‪the likes – so be prepared to take a walk‬‬ ‫‪into the past. The palace also doubles‬‬ ‫‪up as an expensive luxury hotel. After‬‬ ‫‪the architectural sojurn, it’s best if‬‬ ‫‪you travel to Baakline and experience‬‬ ‫‪nature at its Labanese best. Baakline‬‬ ‫‪is a major Druze town at an altitude of‬‬ ‫‪850–920m and is widely known for the‬‬ ‫‪Shallalat Al Zarka waterfalls. The entire‬‬ ‫‪area close to the waterfalls feels like a‬‬ ‫‪tropical paradise with thins streams‬‬ ‫‪falling into a pool shaped gorge at the‬‬ ‫‪bottom. After spending the evening,‬‬ ‫‪lazing around Baakline also called‬‬ ‫‪Baaqleen, I head over to the Shallalat‬‬ ‫‪Al Zarka restaurant for a quick snack‬‬ ‫‪before starting my journey back to‬‬ ‫‪Chouf. The restaurant serves delectable‬‬ ‫‪Lebanese cuisine and sits right on the‬‬ ‫‪banks of the Baakline river.‬‬

After a good night’s rest at my Hotel, I began my day early after a hearty Lebanese breakfast of thick, creamy labne and olive oil, cheese along several freshly procured greens like olives, zaatar, cucumbers, tomatoes.

My next stop was the beautiful city square for a quick refresher before I proceded onward to Beirut. The main square is a showcase of fine Arab architecture, including the Mosque of Emir Fakhreddine Maan, built in 1493, and, behind it, a cobbler’s souq housing touristy shops. You can buy traditional footwear from the souq but, be sure to buy them one size too large. Another palace that also doubles up as a hotel is the Mir Amine Palace Al Chouf – dripping in luxury and an experience to savor, the royals of Lebanon used this palace as their holiday retreat. It even has a nice Italian restaurant where you can head to for lunch.

‫‪My Tunisian holiday kick-started‬‬ ‫‪with a short trip to one of the city’s‬‬ ‫‪most important site – the National‬‬ ‫‪Bardo Museum. Housed inside the‬‬ ‫‪erstwhile Beylic palace close to the‬‬ ‫‪old city of Carthage, it is said to be‬‬ ‫‪one of the oldest and largest of its‬‬ ‫‪kind in Tunisia. I could not help but‬‬ ‫‪be awed by the high, meticulously‬‬ ‫‪decorated ceilings with stucco works‬‬ ‫‪and breathtaking colonnades. The‬‬ ‫‪reception halls are spread out on three‬‬ ‫‪floors of the building. The highlight‬‬ ‫‪of this museum is its stellar mosaic‬‬ ‫‪collection, said to have been brought‬‬ ‫‪here from Roman and Byzantine‬‬ ‫‪sites in Tunisia. Exceptionally well‬‬‫‪preserved, these mosaics account‬‬ ‫‪for more than half of the museum’s‬‬ ‫‪exhibits. I meandering through the‬‬ ‫‪exhibits and came across a prehistoric‬‬ ‫‪alter, Hellinistic sculptures and what‬‬ ‫‪is considered the crown jewel of the‬‬ ‫‪museum – a mosaic representing the‬‬ ‫‪famous Roman poet, Virgil.‬‬

Content with my new-found knowledge about the country’s history I moved on to the famed Medina of Tunis. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Medina is claimed to be one of Tunisia’s greatest treasures.

And rightfully so. Its sprawling maze of narrow streets and cobbled alleyways house vibrant souqs offering everything from garments to knick-knacks and from orange blossom perfume to felt hats, numerous cafes always buzzing with locals and tourists and even residential areas characterised by elaboratelypainted doorways.

The Medina and its labyrinthine lanes provided instant relief from the scorching sun. I was told that apart from souvenir shopping, I should also take a tour of the mosques, hammams (Turkish bath), madrasas (schools for studying the Quran) that surround the Medina. The Kasbah Mosque, said to be one of Tunisia’s most holy sites, was first. Sitting pretty at the edge of the Medina, it boasts a stunning marble columns, a gold and white minaret and a golden finial.

I spent my last few hours in this enchanting city at the La Marsa Beach. As the gentle waves of the Mediterranean Sea crashed at my feet, I felt a sense of calm take over me. In the distance I could see a few fishermen walking up the shore with the days catch and a group of children engaged in building sandcastles and playing a game of catch. But the cacophony didn’t bother me. All I could hear was the roar of the sea. At that moment I wished I had a few more days to explore every nook and cranny of this city, get to know its people and culture better and savour more of its mouthwatering food.

‫في الصباح‬ After getting yourself a hearty portion of the Malaysian national dish, nasi goring (or fried rice), the first thing one should do in Kuala Lumpur is to try and grasp the country’s dynamic history. Luckily, the city is a living museum in itself –walking around is an easy way to understand the transformation of the Malay state and how colonialism has shaped the city’s contemporary outlook. The evidence of KL’s pastChinese tin miners, Indian migrants and British colonists--is showcased in the wide variety of architecture, from crumbling apartments to impeccable skyscrapers. A good place to start walking through history is Merdeka (Independence) Square, a rare patch of green in the metropolis that the British would use as a cricket field before the late 1950’s.

Sharjah linked to Tunis and bishkek by direct flights Air Arabia, the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC), announced the launch of a direct flight from Sharjah to Tunis, Tunisia’s capital city starting July 4, 2019.The new flight will operate three times a week; on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The flights depart Sharjah International Airport at 15:30 hours local time arriving at Carthage International Airport in Tunis at 19:05 hours local time. The return flights depart Carthage International Airport in Tunis at 20:05 hours arriving in Sharjah at 05:05 hours local time. Known for its golden beaches, sunny weather and affordable luxuries, Tunisia offers its visitors a great mix of attractions spreading from its cosmopolitan capital city Tunis to the ancient ruins of Carthage and its coastal resorts. Air Arabia currently serves Tunisia from its hub in Morocco with direct flights connecting Casablanca and Tunis.

The second addition to its flying manifest will be the service between Sharjah and Bishkek.

Air Arabia (PJSC) reported strong financial results for the first quarter (January to March) 2019 as the Middle East & North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier continued to deliver solid commercial and operational results.

Air Arabia reported a net profit of AED128 million for the three months ending March 31, 2019, a 16 percent increase compared to the corresponding 2018 figure of AED110 million. In the same period, the airline posted a turnover of AED1,029 billion, a 17 percent increase compared to the first quarter of last year. More than 2.8 million passengers flew with Air

Arabia between January and March 2019 across the carrier’s four hubs, an 8 per cent increase compared to a total of 2.6 million passengers carried in the first quarter of last year. The airline’s average seat load factor – or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats – during the first three months of 2019 stood at an impressive 84 per cent, up 3 per cent compared to the same period last year.
