immerse into art Contemporary American artist Darren Waterstonís immersive installation talks about the weight of decadence and crumbling egos text BY Ishita goel On display for the first time in UK, the installation is inspired by the tension between art and money, ego and patronage. The design of the original interior famously saw Whistler create the space without the knowledge of his commissioner. Initially invited by his friend and patron, Frederick Leyland, to consult on the room’s colour scheme, Whistler proceeded to redesign the entire room whilst Leyland was away from London. Fuelled by their clashing personalities, the argument was splashed across London’s society tabloids, turning the once great friends into enemies.
For Darren Waterston, contemporary American artist, art is about immersive installations, largerthan-life and a grand spectacle. His most recent work, Filthy Lucre, which is a reimagining of James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s famed Peacock Room, will be displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum (25th January - 3 May 2020) and the Hunterian Museum (4 June – 4 October 2020), London. The iconic Peacock Room is a 19thcentury sumptuous dining room, which can be found at can be found at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Waterston has faithfully recreated each of the room’s individual elements with a twist, with the installation revealing a magnificent ruin crumbling under the weight of material decadence and the egos of those involved in its creation.
» What inspired you to reimagine Whistler’s Peacock Room? I was inspired by my own circumstance as an artist navigating through the contemporary art world. Whistler’s story as an artist working in the mid 19th century felt very familiar to the present moment of the international art market, patronage and how art gets seen, collected and valued. » How challenging was it to replicate almost every detail of Whistler’s work? Please tell us about your experience It was initially a very daunting undertaking to build a reimagined version of Whistler’s fabled masterpiece but I worked with a tremendously talented group of artists and craftspeople at MASS MoCA to see all the details realised. The most important aspect of the undertaking was to pay respectful homage to Whistler’s Peacock
Room and to create something entirely new and unsettling that was uniquely my own and not a parody of another artist’s work. » Do you often create installations at such a grand scale? I have created several site-specific works over the years that include murals, and installations of my work juxtaposed with historical artefacts. I have always been interested in the spaces themselves where art is contemplated and experienced. I am currently working on a new project that is a building-size architectural sculpture of sorts based on a Byzantine chapel and will house a panoramic cycle of large paintings. Perhaps making Filthy Lucre gave me the confidence to continue to create painterly installations at this large scale. » What message would you like viewers to take away from your work? I don’t know if there is a specific message but I do want the viewer to be impacted by the experience, moved by it in some way. Filthy Lucre sets out to provoke an emotional, visceral response. There is certainly a critique of the capricious art world in my piece but it’s also a contemplation on beauty, volatility and pathos. Afternoon I decide to explore Sule Bazaar next. A wide road lined on both sides by ruins of pillared structures, I am told by a vendor that this quaint street used to be a bustling marketplace in ancient Hampi, under the Vijayanagara rulers. The bazaar offers delightful handicrafts, that I stock up on.
