Daniel Graves completed his study of art in America before moving to Florence to study further with Nerina Simi. Over the years, he created a style of oil painting that blends the beautiful Florentine tradition with admirable draftsmanship. After teaching in art schools in America and Italy, Graves then established The Florence Academy of Art in 1991. The main aspect is that they are rooted in the more classically technical aspects like paints used, canvases that are used and rediscovering the painting methods and techniques of old masters. That always fascinated me, subject wise, there are lot of variations from landscapes to interiors and so on. It’s timeless. » Why did you feel there was a need to revisit the norms of art education around the world? I think the kind of paintings that I have always admired and tried to emulate were those that were skill based. The paintings that I have striven to follow in that particular style have been made with a great of knowledge of how to draw and sketch. Today, a lot of techniques divert away from painting that is skill based and on a personal level, I strive to be different. » Can you please describe a day in the life of a student at the Florence Academy of Art? Students work from a live model through

half the day at different levels. They begin with charcoal drawings of the figure and eventually move to a more complicated type of figure drawing using tone paper, white chalk and charcoal. The other half is taken up with individual projects starting with board drawings, casts and eventually finishing with a more complex portraiture. In the evenings, they anatomy, art history and work with pencils for shorter poses to familiarise themselves with construction of the figure. » How is it when you are amongst students trained under a completely different set of principles? We start off with the same goal, same set of coordinates anywhere in the world without depending on the cultural background. Being able to draw and paint the world around you is a real challenge for all of us and I think it is the thing that we have in common and what we share. We start them off at the very beginning and step by step gradually lead them through the process of simpler projects before graduating to difficult models so that when they finally paint, the subject looks very much like the world around them.

One of the first features of Istanbul that you will need to reckon with, is the city’s massive size. There is a reason why this city can easily embrace two continents and it’s best traversed on a set itinerary unless you have at least a week to spend here. I am always impressed when a region is able to incorporate the traditions, dialects and architecture of more than one culture and when I finally rode out to my hotel, my appreciation for Istanbul, widely known as a crossover between the east and the west, knew no bounds. After a hearty breakfast of buttered toasts with muhammara (a red pepper and walnut spread), balkaymak (delicious clotted cream with honey) along with the best cup of coffee I had ever tasted, I head to the Topkapı Palace. The courtyard is actually an entire cobblestoned square and is adorned by the Fountain of Sultan Ahmet III, built in 1728. As I walk into the second court, I am immediately overwhelmed by the sheer amount of history that is contained within the palace’s walls. As the centre of the sprawling Ottoman empire, the Topkapı Palace is one of the most elaborate examples of authentic turkish architecture even today. While you are here, be sure to visit the sprawling Harem, a 300-room, six-floored structure which housed the Sultan’s concubines.

Known for the beautiful blue tiles that adorn the walls, the mosque’s exterior features a cascade of domes and six slender minarets. The mosque is also among the most visited monuments around the city.

My next stop is the iconic Sultanahmet square, a testament to the achievements and brilliance of the Byzantine-era. The square is home to Hippodrome of Constantinople, the magnificent Hagia Sophia and four century old Blue Mosque. I decide to improvise and visit the Hagia Sophia, presuming that it will still leave me with more than enough time to spare for a visit to Istanbul’s well-known Jazz Clubs. The museum was originally constructed as a church in 537AD and later converted into a Mosque by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453 before being finally turned into a museum by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Republic’s founder in 1934. At the Sofia, a similar, overpowering sense of appreciation overpowered me, even the smallest detail of the massive structure tells a different story of an era long gone.

One of the best parts about any city with a multicultural impression is the unorthodox music circuit and a large number of experimenting artists that frequent the area. Istanbul has, over the years, grown to become one of the top destinations to experience contemporary Jazz music. I wasn’t lucky enough to be in time for the renowned Jazz festival, but the traditions of Jazz clubs with live music is still alive and thriving amongst the streets of Istanbul. To conclude my trip, I head to the 60m2 (60 square meters), an intimate nigh time Jazz arena which has been known to host some of the biggest names in Jazz music. With the serene, almost lazy vibes of a Turkish evening and the low notes from a bass guitar, I finally bid adieu to this mesmerising phenomenon, commonly referred to as the city of Istanbul!

The five-day tourist card charges a flat rate about $30—for access to a dozen of the city’s most popular cultural institutions. The Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets on earth. It contains a labyrinth of 4,500 stores marketing the local crafts and wares. However, I decided to begin my trip by heading to Ice Q, about an hour away from Innsbruck, a beautiful gondola-ride takes you all the way to the top to cube-shaped building cantilevered at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. The restaurant (featured in the latest bond movie, Sprectre) offers an extensive menu that includes traditional Austrian cuisine along with several dishes boasting a modern twist.

Air Arabia wins ‘Low-Cost Airline of the Year’ honour at Aviation Business Awards Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC) in the Middle East and North Africa, has won the ‘Low-Cost Airline of the Year’ recognition at the 13th Aviation Business Awards (AVB) gala ceremony held recently in Dubai. Air Arabia was adjudged in the ‘LowCost Airline of the Year’ category by an expert panel of industry judges for the carrier’s innovation, sustainable performance and continuous growth. Air Arabia has added 10 new routes to its global network in the first half of this year. Currently, Air Arabia operates flights to over 170 global destinations in 50 countries from four hubs in the UAE, Morocco, and Egypt. To add to the customer experience, during the first half of 2019, Air Arabia launched a new complimentary in-flight entertainment system 'SkyTime' that allows passengers to live stream digital content on smartphones, tablets or laptops while traveling with the carrier. In April, Air Arabia received the ‘Best Low-Cost Carrier Award’ by Oman Airports in recognition of its continued commitment to passenger satisfaction and development within the industry.

Etihad and Air Arabia join hands to launch Abu Dhabi’s first low-cost carrier Etihad Aviation Group, owner of the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Air Arabia, the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier, today announced the signing of an agreement to launch ‘Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’, the capital’s first low-cost carrier. Etihad and Air Arabia will establish an independent joint venture company that will operate as a low-cost passenger airline with its hub in Abu Dhabi International Airport. The new carrier will complement Etihad Airways’ services from Abu Dhabi and

will cater to the growing low-cost travel market segment in the region. Based in Abu Dhabi, the new company will adopt the low-cost business model. Its board of directors, consisting of members nominated by Etihad and Air Arabia, will steer the company’s independent strategy and business mandate.
