Your national carrier has again been tasked with the role of evacuating Indians from Wuhan in China in light of the recent outbreak of the coronavirus. Air India always performs such roles with a deep sense of national pride and commitment. In the past too Air India has carried out evacuation of its citizens from Libya, Yemen, Kuwait, Iraq and Nepal besides rising to the occasion during domestic crisis on many occasions.

The national carrier celebrated the Republic Day with nationalistic fervour and distributed almost 30,000 miniature flags to passengers embarking from the six metros and Srinagar. These flags made of handmade paper contained flower seeds, which once planted after use will add to the greenery. This unique initiative of distributing flags embedded with marigold and fenugreek seeds made by the Sahariya tribal artisans of Madhya Pradesh has been widely appreciated.

On this day, the national carrier also conveyed its best wishes to the people by means of display hoardings in various cities, including one at the Regal Chowk (Lal Chowk) in Srinagar.

We also recently launched a special campaign titled “Air India - Joy of More, A feeling called India” highlighting the three main advantages of flying Air India – good food, more leg space and higher baggage allowance - 10 kg more than other carriers.

The first step towards disinvestment of the national carrier, the Preliminary Information Memorandum seeking expressions of interest was released on the 27th of January. This exercise on completion will enable the airline to rise to its full potential and redeem its past glory.

On the international front, Air India is starting new flights between Kozhikode and Jeddah twice a week from February 17, Mumbai and London Stansted Airport thrice a week from February 20, and Mumbai and Doha thrice a week from February 21. Delhi and Seoul, and Delhi and Toronto have also been linked with direct flights.

Taking charge Meenakshi Mallik, director, Commercial, Air India, talks about the airline’s new international routes and how it has given wings to her dreams lenging yet fulfilling”. Inspired by and devoted to Chanakya Niti – taught by her father, a career bureaucrat, Mallik believes in the adage ‘straight trees are the first to fall, so one needs to be strong yet flexible’. “Only diamond cuts diamond. Therefore, to cut a diamond you have to be tough. If I am not strong myself, how can I protect and fight for my people? I am very positive and optimistic, and come down hard on negativity and inefficiency,” she asserts.

Meenakshi Mallik has always been fascinated with aviation and the national carrier gave wings to her dreams when she joined the airline as a management trainee in 1989. Today, she is director, Commercial, and board member of Air India, and it is her passion for her profession that propels her to scale greater heights for and with the airline.

“I love my job and have always welcomed challenges. As a true aviator, I tend to take off best against the wind and this never-say-die spirit has been the driving force that keeps me going. As they say, a rough sea makes a better swimmer - likewise, I feel more keyed up while facing any difficult situation and tend to give my best. Perhaps, being a lady, I was more determined to prove myself through sheer hard work and commitment,” says Mallik.

During the course of her career, she has gained hands-on experience in every segment of Commercial - be it at the airport, cargo, passenger international/domestic, reservations, sales and marketing, and has even worked in tandem with loaders and helpers during trying times. “I enjoy working as a team and sharing camaraderie with my colleagues across the hierarchy. Though I am open to ideas, I have always been assertive and followed my own convictions,” she adds.

Air India is an integral part of Mallik’s career and she recalls her journey in the organisation as “chal-

Mallik is honoured of the position she has risen to in an organisation that acknowledges and respects gender equality. She reminisces, “Our organisation is extremely women-friendly. In fact, my colleagues have always been supportive and motivating.” According to her, Air India’s biggest strength lies in its strong and resilient workforce, which Mallik says, “serves as the foundation over which we have been building our image, network, fleet and facilities among others. The airline has witnessed days of fame and honour, and that propels its instinct to survive against all odds in today’s turbulent market.

Air India is still a premier airline and one of the most extensive flight service providers of the country.”

In fact, it was her idea to start flight operations to such destinations as San Francisco and Toronto.

She elaborates, “We have been relentlessly trying to expand our network, with a slew of new flights across our international and domestic network, in spite of limited fleet and resources.” In addition to this, Air India has also upgraded its website, revamped its call centre and improved every area of customer interface, all of which are expected to pay rich dividends. Mallik adds, “I am also happy with the conscious steps that are being taken to enhance the brand by highlighting its unique offerings and services through various campaigns.”

Mallik is optimistic about the future of Air India, poised for privatisation. She believes that whatever happens will be in the best interest of the company.

“We should all be patient and weather the storm, from which a new and stronger Air India will emerge,” she says. And, going by her astute understanding of the aviation scenario, her hobby of extensive reading and her keen interest in astrology, there is reason to take heart from her positive vision.

Alliance Air takes specially-abled children on a joyride On January 22, 2020, Alliance Air organised a special Dream Flight for specially-abled children in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The airline brought joy and happiness to 41 junior flyers with special needs by taking them on a dream-cometrue 40-minute flight. Needless to say, the children were elated. It was the first time that these children, most of whom hailed from not-so-affluent localities of Bhubaneswar, and a few from a tribal village in Baripada (250 km from Bhubaneswar), flew on an airplane.

The children, aged between 8 and 18 years, were selected by Swabhiman, a Bhubaneswar-based NGO that advocates for and serves people with special abilities. “I felt as if I touched the moon”, “I will never forget this flight” and “my first ever flight was exciting and thrilling”, were only a handful of the reactions that poured from the children.

Prior to the take-off, an art exhibition titled ‘My Dream Flight’ was organised at the Biju Patnaik International Airport.

The event was marked by a cake cutting ceremony followed by a musical performance. The children were then felicitated with gifts by Alliance Air officials as a token of love.

The initiative was a joint effort of Alliance Air; Ministry of Civil Aviation; Air India; Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities department, Government of Odisha; Airport Authority of India and Swabhiman. “Alliance Air feels privileged to have done something unique for these children with special needs. This is the first such initiative of Alliance Air and we would continue to support the empowerment of people with special abilities as well as those from lesser-privileged communities,” said CS Subbiah, CEO, Alliance Air.

Master of both worlds Rajni Sharma joined Air India in 2014 as an air hostess and has been working as a grooming instructor with the airline since 2019. She has been a part of such cultural shows for Air India as the face of the airline at the Global Aviation Summit, IFS Leader Seminar, Women’s Day event and Air India Cargo event.

But there’s more to her than meets the eye. When she is not in the Air India uniform, she is turning tables as DJ Gouri. She has been pursuing her passion for music for the last six years and has garnered several accolades for her talent, including the National Excellence award for the best female DJ in India (2019) and International Inspirational Women Award (2020). She can even change her style of music to suit any event and ensures that everybody grooves to her beats.

Not only does she strike a perfect balance between her profession and passion, but does so with the same amount of enthusiasm and dedication. This has earned her numerous appreciation letters from the airlines’ esteemed passengers.

Sharma is also a motivational speaker and travels around the country for the same.

She moved on to Reservations and is currently in Sales as corporate manager. She is a yoga practitioner and loves travelling, both of which she says, keeps her “fit and young”. For the last 20 years, she has been mostly travelling to Europe. “I also help to chalk out trips for my friends, family and colleagues,” she says.

Parthasarathi has also undertaken trips to Faroe Islands, an archipelago of Denmark, and Svalbard, an archipelago close to Norway, where she recalls the temperature being “a bone-chilling - 45 degree C”. “I feel blessed to be in a job that helps be keep my passion for travel alive,” she adds.

Beauty with brains Pushpinder Kaur joined Air India in 2012 and is currently a senior cabin crew member. “Ever since I was a little girl I believed that I belonged in the skies. Working with Air India has been a childhood dream. I can proudly say that I have imbibed the philosophies of the airline and that I would be with it till my last day,” says Kaur, who is extremely popular on social media.

she has received throughout her career. The slogan of the airline is ‘Truly Indian’ and she believes she is truly Air Indian.

Dedicated service Sanjay Bansal joined Air India in 1988, a time when Air India and Indian Airlines were the only airlines in the country. To be a cabin crew member with Air India was a matter of pride. Even after 31 years of service, Bansal still feels so. He is currently a cabin supervisor (manager) and has undergone training on B 747, B 777 and B 787 fleet. With Air India, he has received the opportunity to attend to several dignitaries, including India’s Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bansal displayed his prowess when, recently, he calmly and deftly took care of an inebriated passenger, who was a lawyer in the UK. He was appreciated by the airline management and employees alike for his professionalism and the way he conducted himself. He says, “Flying with Air India has changed my life. I have had the opportunities of visiting countries across the world and meeting new people every day. They have not only been enriching experiences but have also taught me how to tackle tough situations, if I happen to face any.” Bansal is looking forward to his son following his footsteps and taking up aviation as a career.

A helping hand Dr Sujata Bitla joined the national carrier in September 2009 and is currently deputy manager medical services MSD, Mumbai. She is always seen helping employees or anyone in need of medical care and often goes beyond her scope of work to do so. She has been a part of the general OPD and has also played the role of pre-flight breath analyser doctor. Among the several commendable jobs she has done, the noteworthy ones include conducting periodic medical check-ups of cabin crew and pilots, giving first-aid lectures to airline employees and supervising catering inspections. She says, “Air India is always striving to do its best. It is a great organisation to work for as it encourages a happy and healthy environment.”

Dreams do come true

Flying high Sheena Singh joined Air India as a cabin fleet crew member 27 years ago and gained experience on the Boeing and the Airbus. In the course of her career, she has had the opportunity to serve celebrated personalities from across the world. She has also been the face of the airline at various official festivities and inaugurals. Currently, she is a certified crew resource management (CRM) instructor for Airline Allied Services Limited air crew and has been recognised for creating a CRM ready reckoner. “Whenever I have to make a tough call, I do it by believing in myself. I believe that the difference between possible and impossible lies in a woman’s determination,” she says.

Ritu Dalal hails from a business-oriented family and grew up near the Juhu airport in Mumbai. “I remember looking at the departing Air India planes with reverential wonder,” says Dalal.

She decided to pursue her goals and headed to Europe, which is known for its high standards of pilot training. She aced all her exams on the first go and decided to work as a flight instructor there.

She was recruited by Air India in 2016 and she says, “I am so grateful for all the amazing opportunities I’ve received.

Air India has helped me grow both as a pilot and as a human being. Now when I land on the runway, I smile to myself while sitting in the cockpit and looking at the window where, as a little girl, I would stand to get a glimpse of those planes.”

An all-rounder Jatin Mehta, whose journey with the national carrier began 15 years ago, is a chief cabin crew member based in Hyderabad.

He has held the post of captain of the Air India South Zone cricket team for the last seven years. He has not only led his team to become champions but has also garnered accolades along the way for his leadership.

One of the milestones of his career has been being a part of the Air India Hyderabad cricket team that won the A1 Division Institution Cricket League (2010-2011). Mehta’s all-round performance played a major role in the win and he was declared ‘Best Player’ of Air India during the season.

Catrin Finch is a world-renowned harpist, a noted music producer and the former Royal Harpist for Prince Charles. She tells Shrabasti Anindita Mallik about how she fell in love with the harp and memories of playing for the British royalty

You were five years old when you decided to play the harp after attending a concert by noted Spanish harpist Marisa Robles. When did you plan to take the instrument up full-time?

There wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a plan, it happened quite naturally. I received the instrument as a gift on my birthday and by the time I was nine years old, I was sitting for my grade eight ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examination. So, it became obvious that music and playing the harp was my destiny.

Was the harp a natural choice, given that you hail from Wales and the harp is one of the traditional instruments of the country?

Even though I was not inspired to play the harp by a Welsh harpist, the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tradition and culture of playing the instrument were important influences on my musical upbringing. They say that there are more harpists per capita in Wales than in any other country in the world.

So, I guess, some can say that choosing to play the harp was natural for me.

Who inspired and influenced you in the initial years of learning?

My teachers were big influences – well-known harpists Elinor Bennett and Skaila Kanga, and some wonderful pianists. When I was growing up, I was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, where, over six years, I got the opportunity to work with first-class conductors and soloists. I also had the privilege of playing in prom concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I listened to popular music throughout my teenage years and youth, but what made me slightly different from my peers was that I liked to slip in compositions of such legends as John Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy and Sergei Rachmaninoff in my playlists.

Being a small organisation among global giants, Air India concentrated on building its fleet based on passenger comfort and technological efficiency of its aircraft. At one time, it became the only airline in the world to have a full fleet of jet aircraft.

The Maharajah

In the 1940s, the Maharajah was developed as the mascot and became a part of the airline’s campaign to distinguish itself from its competitors. Although called Maharajah, “he was conceived as a man of many parts”, said Bobby Kooka, the creator of the Maharajah. One of the most successful “product personalities” in the history of advertising, the Maharajah lent himself easily to the posters, hoardings and other publicity of the airline.

Designed in a futuristic style, the modern interiors reconciled the dichotomy of India’s rich culture with modern approach through sculptures, carvings, paintings and textiles.

Air India Cargo was set up in 1932 and started its freighter operation with a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. This gave Air India the distinction of becoming the first Asian airline to operate freighters that expanded its operations to include precious and perishable cargo.

February promises to be a month of excitement as two major Indian cultural events - Surajkund Mela held on the outskirts of New Delhi and Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda Festival – are set to attract art and craft lovers from across the world, says Punam Goel

Every city in India has its own cultural legacy. Kochi in Kerala, for instance, apart from its historic temples and performing arts, is known for the art extravaganza Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Pushkar in Rajasthan is famous for the Pushkar camel fair, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Ladakh, on the other hand, attracts tourists from the world over during the Hemis Festival, which is held in the compound of the Hemis Monastery and features colourful masked dances called chham among other highlights.

In February, however, all roads will lead to Faridabad in Haryana, on the outskirts of New Delhi, from February 1 to 16, for the annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela and to Mumbai, which will host the most awaited multi-disciplinary Kala Ghoda Arts Festival from February 1 to 9.

A cornucopia of regional and international art and craft, culture, tradition and cuisine – this festival brings together all this and more. The fair, which was primarily conceived to promote the pool of indigenous artisans whose skills were being overshadowed by machinemade products, has today become one of the largest craft fairs in the world. More than 20 countries from across the globe participate in this festival and jostle for attention along with some of the most exquisite Indian handloom products, handicrafts and cuisines.

What to expect: For the 34th edition of the festival this year, Himachal Pradesh has been chosen as the theme state. So, expect plenty of vibrant Himachali dohru (traditional woollen dress for women), Himachali topi (traditional cap for men), Kullu shawls and pullas (footwear made from local wild grass) and such varieties of tribal jewellery as ironheaded bangles, hair ornaments and peepul leaf-shaped forehead ornaments. Visitors can also savour such mouthwatering Himachali delicacies as channa madra (chickpea curry slow-cooked with yoghurt and spices), Chamba-style fried fish (deep-fried battercoated fish, a speciality of the Chamba region) and babru (flatbreads stuffed with black gram and deep-fried).

Visitors can also look forward to stunning offerings from Uzbekistan, this year’s partner nation. An added attraction will be the unveiling of ace Indian fashion designer Ritu Beri’s Ferghana Fantasy II, a collection inspired by Uzbekistan, at the venue. The collection takes its name from the land of Ferghana, a region in Uzbekistan famous for its unique silk called khan-atlas.

No outing to Surajkund fair can be complete without a visit to the multi-cuisine food court that offers ethnic flavours from the world over. Folk performances and evening recitals by popular artistes add to the entertainment quotient of the event.

Kala Ghoda Arts Festival

While the Surajkund fair revels in the celebration of India’s heritage and delves into traditions from around the world, Mumbai comes alive with a festival of a different kind.

The city, in February, attracts visitors to the annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (KGAF). This multi-disciplinary festival has, over the years, revolutionised how art is viewed and enjoyed by taking it out of closed spaces.

Also recognised as one of the oldest street festivals in the country, the 21st edition of the event this year will, once again, bring art, music, theatre, food and cinema together at the Kala Ghoda precinct in south Mumbai.

And this year, KGAF has set a new precedent.

The organisers of the festival have, for the first time, tied up with the crowdfunding platform Ketto to bring in people as stakeholders in supporting this yearly magnum opus.

The fact that this event takes place in Mumbai’s most aesthetic space – in close proximity to the Jehangir Art Gallery, the National Museum of Modern Art and the architecturally-stunning Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya – makes it truly special.

What to expect: One can enjoy enthralling musical performances ranging from the Kokomo Choir that focusses on fusing western classical music with folk music from around the world to a piano recital by Lydian Nadhaswaram, a 14-year-old prodigy. The more classically inclined can attend a programme dedicated to ghazal maestro Talat Mahmood and sarod recitals by Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

There will also be a Bharatanatyam performance by renowned danseuse Tanya Saxena, a showcase of Maharashtra’s folk dance chabina and a hip-hop performance by Kings United, the 2019 winners of the World of Dance competition. Expect a plethora of plays in English, Hindi and other Indian regional languages too. While it may be tough to pick one over the other, who doesn’t like being spoilt for choice?

From clicking the perfect photograph to teaching our children, we use various forms of Artificial Intelligence in our daily lives. Very soon, it will become an indispensable part of our routine, says Ashwin Rajagopalan

When Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese decided to make the critically-acclaimed film Irishman, he had a unique problem on his hands. The film’s three lead actors – Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci – had to play characters much younger than their actual age in a film that takes place between 1949 and 2000. The solution was Flux, a unique visual effects (VFX) de-ageing tool. Flux used a catalogue of thousands of frames drawn from the actors’ careers that included noses, eyes and mouths that could be placed in the scenes. An Artificial Intelligence (AI) system combed the image archive to provide a reference image to transform the actors’ looks.

The audience saw the actors de-age on screen but couldn’t guess how. That’s the beauty of AI: it’s everywhere yet most of us don’t realise how it’s as much a part of our present as it will define the future. Here’s a look at the areas where AI is playing an integral role in our daily lives:

Smartphone photography From Deep Fusion, a computational photography process in the iPhone 11 series, to Google’s brilliant Night Sight mode that elevates images shot in low light – almost every smartphone camera has AI working in the background. It doesn’t just cover up the poor decisions we might take in terms of

lighting conditions but does so effortlessly and with minimal fuss.

Virtual assistants From Alexa and Siri to Google Assistant – digital assistants are getting smarter and going beyond just smartphones. Think smart speakers and smart displays. Along with ordering a pizza and searching for information, AI-driven assistants are not just adding more skills but also developing the ability to strike a conversation with even a sense of humour!

AI-based chatbots Planning a holiday or need help choosing an insurance policy? There’s a good chance that an AI-based chatbot might be your first point of interaction when you open a website.

Several travel service companies, airlines, food chains, marketing agencies and fitness institutions are using chatbots to manage routine queries that aid a customer to make the right decision.

Facial recognition This much-talked about Artificial Intelligence application is being used across the world and though, not always welcomed by the masses, it will only get smarter with the passage of time. The debate of consumer privacy continues even as large players like Google and Facebook successfully use AI. Google’s AI solutions include Google Maps, an app on which millions depend to track live traffic or while using ride-sharing platforms like Uber, which also depends on this solution.

Facebook’s AI team relies on its image recognition model, which is why phototagging suggestions appear on the social media platform.

AI could soon provide a solution for rising healthcare costs. PathAI is an American company that has created an AI-powered solution for pathologists that helps them analyse tissue samples and make extremely accurate diagnoses. The application also uses AI to help patients with minor aches, pains and illnesses by using machine learning to analyse clinical and medical data. The application doesn’t just make recommendations but also helps patients schedule appointments and make payments.

While voice-enabled tech and smart features are becoming common in cars on Indian roads, trials of self-driving cars pioneered abroad by companies like Google and Audi have been taking place for years now. This is an area where breakthroughs seem slow, partly because the traffic systems of every city need to be entirely reimagined. But as AI evolves with time, this could soon become a reality.

Take Betterment for example, an automated financial investing platform that uses AI to learn about an investor. It builds a personalised profile based on her/his financial plans by automating tax loss and portfolio management. AI has already been applied to education, primarily in tools that help develop skills and testing systems. From aiding students to get a better grasp of a subject and increasing efficiency to helping teachers streamline administrative tasks – AI is the way ahead.

Not just that, these technologies are also capable of adjusting teaching levels based on an individual student’s particular needs.

Moreover, since the future is one where AI is reality, such methods of education is but imperative.

Such plantbased ingredients as petals of the butterfly pea flower are being used to prepare moon milk, a warm drink derived from Ayurvedic traditions. The extract of the flower has been consumed for centuries as a memory enhancer, anti-stress and calming agent, and even weight loss. It can also be used as a natural food colour!

Substituting sugar with honey and jaggery is passé. In the days to come, expect a plethora of options ranging from coconut sugar, stevia (derived from the leaves of the stevia plant), and maple syrup to an array of syrupy reductions from fruits like pomegranate, and even those made from sorghum and sweet potato to sweeten your platter.

Porsche’s first fully-electric sports car

Porsche is known for iconic, petrol-fuelled sports cars, and many a car nut has dreamed of owning one someday. The Porsche Taycan goes totally against the first part of the description but, in all other aspects, this, the first all-electric all-wheel-drive sports car from the marque, fully lives up to its reputation for high performance. A package of aggressive styling, precise handling and incredible acceleration, its twin electric motors push out 522-750 hp, and it can do the 0-100 km/h dash in an estimated 2.6-3.8 seconds (depending on the variant). Launch Control gives you the thrill of peak power for a 2.5-second burst! The door handles automatically extend outward and the driver has the pleasure of a 16.8 inch curved instrument display.

And it has nearly 500 litres of storage space!

The Porsche Taycan

Its name is derived from ‘emotion’ and ‘intelligence’, values that the three-pointed star hold dear. The EQC is the first electric vehicle in India from the brand, and what a car to point the way to the future! This luxurious all-electric, all-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle (SUV) is driven by twin electric motors whose 408 hp (horsepower) peak power can push it to the ton from rest in just 5.1 seconds! ARTICO man-made leather cloaks the supremely comfortable seats; the ENERGIZER package adjusts lighting, fragrance and other features; and the Burmester surround sound system envelops you in concert-like audio. The ‘EQC Edition 1886’ tag takes pride of place on the seat backrests and the centre console. Volkswagen’s concept all-electric SUV

The concept all-electric vehicle with which Volkswagen returns to the Expo is the I.D. Crozz, a halo product for future SUVs that the brand will bring to India. It is a zero-emission automobile with a four-wheel-drive powertrain built as much for urban commutes as for unpaved tracks or weather-beaten roads.

The twin electric motors offer a combined power output of 300 hp, and it can reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, along with an estimated range of 300-500 km. The rearfacing cameras in place of conventional wing mirrors are a cool touch! The front doors are the conventional front-hinged type; the rear ones, though, are cantilever-style sliding doors. An augmented reality head-up display projects information like speed, navigation instructions and more onto the windscreen.

Plus, it boasts over 500 litres of storage!

Kia’s luxury MPV

With its ‘Extravagant by Design’ tagline, Kia’s Carnival is here to make its place in the luxury multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) space.

The electric rear doors slide back with just a touch, and you can gaze skyward through the dual-panel electric sunroof. Middle-row occupants get VIP treatment with Nappa leather captain seats, a rear seat entertainment system and calf supports for a comfortable ride. All seats up still leave over 500 litres of boot space, so you can pack your

house! Use the UVO (Your Voice) system to connect your smartwatch with the Carnival, and breathe in fresh air courtesy the air purifier. Thinnakara Like pearls scattered in the sea, the Lakshadweep islands reveal themselves to only the most determined of seekers. While a handful of travellers are familiar with the sights and sounds here, fewer still set eyes on Thinnakara, one of the archipelagoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hidden treasures, says Irfan Quader

If you have ever dreamt of living on an island of your own, head to Thinnakara in the Lakshadweep archipelago. One of the uninhabited islands of Lakshadweep, this stunning teardrop-shaped piece of land is completely off the tourist radar. Around eight kilometres northeast of the popular Agatti island, Thinnakara shares a lagoon and coral-lined banks with Bangaram island (ranked among the best getaways of the world). But the two islands are worlds apart. While the latter boasts air-conditioned beach cottages serving a wide range of culinary fare, the former is quite the opposite. Housing a few modest yet cozy accommodations with thatched roofs and bio-toilets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a stay in Thinnakara is like living the Robinson Crusoe life on your own private island with unadulterated natural sights. on pearly-white beaches, there are plenty of opportunities for such water sports as snorkelling, kayaking and glass-bottomed boat rides.

Snorkel amid rainbow hues

Just off the southern side of Thinnakara is the site of a small shipwreck. Although the area is devoid of corals, it is one of the most interesting spots for snorkelling near the island. The sheer diversity of fish that swim through and around the remnants of the wreck, their rainbow hues flashing in the sunlight, is breathtaking. While you take in the sights here, be careful of the water current. While it is mild enough to let you enjoy, it is also just as strong enough to push you a little off course. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advisable to have a

trained guide with you for this once-in-alifetime experience.

Wade out to the Parali islands

At the opposite end of Thinnakara, off the northern tip, two tiny islands emerge from the shallow blue waters of the lagoon. Called simply Parali I and Parali II, these two clusters of swaying palm trees lie right on the lagoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge. The water level between Thinnakara and these small islands is so shallow that at low tide you can wade out to them without even getting your knees wet!

Due to the lack of restaurants or eateries here, provisions for meals are available in the accommodations. But a must-have here is coconut water, which is available in abundance.

ing in a movie. On one of the islands, you could easily convince yourself that you’re marooned somewhere in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by endless stretches of water. A small stone-pillared monument hidden under the palms on Parali II only adds to the island’s mysterious vibe.

You can spend hours here undisturbed among the palms and quaint hidden beaches of these two islands – even more so than on Thinnakara.

Apart from a few locals who occasionally come from Agatti to fish, you will be on your own. This is one

of those few places in the world perfect for those who love their privacy, nature and enjoy their own company.

Most travellers to Lakshadweep miss out on the Thinnakara experience, either because it’s not a part of the package tours or because it appears too basic for comfort. Make the effort and you’ll be rewarded with memories that are guaranteed to stay with you for a long time.

There’s no point following a map. Sure, a packaged tour might point you towards the popular tourist spots, but imagine how refreshing it’d be to explore lesser-known sites of this tourist heaven. Most travellers visit Dubai to see the 2,716.5-ft-high Burj Khalifa, said to be the tallest building in the world, and other popular sites, and miss out on so many other hidden sights and experiences here, of which only the city’s residents are aware. Allow me to show you a side of Dubai - a far more exciting, engaging and unforgettable one.

Take La Mer for example, which is among the most beautiful locales in the city. Nestled in the Jumeirah neighbourhood, La Mer is Dubai’s answer >> 9:00 am to Hollywood’s dreamy beaches. If to 12:00 it is not for men in white kandoras (a traditional ankle-length garment) and women in black abayas (a traditional robe), you can easily mistake this for a beach in Miami and not in the Middle East. This well-maintained cove is fringed with palm trees, a white shoreline and boasts water sports. Since the sun shines bright and hard on Dubai, I begin my trail to acquire a tan with a cool cosmopolitan drink, which isn’t cool enough for the bartender. His smirk suggests that he had expected a more challenging recipe. This ‘I can do better’ attitude have propelled the city’s dining habits into cults.

Two such are the resident’s penchant for burgers and burqinis (a swimwear that covers the entire body except for the face, palms and feet). I stroll to a nearby trailer for a mini burger topped with sliced jalapeno and melting cheese. Leaving the laid-back morning behind me, I walk to the promenade where I hail a cab to Al Seef, a lesser-explored heritage district of the city.

Do not forget to drop by Al Ghurair Centre, a stone’s throw away from the Waterfront Market. It is often hard for the senior residents in Dubai to imagine Ghurair, in the middle of Deira, transform from a shopping-only area to a cultural hub. Cinema, graffiti and football are popular at the centre. Try delicious savouries and sweet treats from the Japanese bakery Yakitate here.

Like an open-air studio, each section in Al Seef houses multiple galleries that appear as windows into Dubai’s artistic soul. While one sleek space is outfitted with classic dial-up phones and century-old typewriters, another lane exhibits Middle Eastern >> 2:00 pm photographers’ brilliant to 05:00 pm shots on large canvases.

For creative inspiration, explore Al Seef’s Arabic and French cafés or exotic fashion boutiques. I join a small group gathered around a bunch of actors enacting a short play before I act on my lunch plans.

An offbeat lunch awaits me in the next leg of my journey at a tad more bustling spot. I head to the Union Metro Station as I have a train to catch to my next destination. Commuting by train is a convenient way to go around this bustling neighbourhood.

A visual metaphor of New York’s Times Square, the Union station has a plethora of screens and billboards that scream for attention. It doesn’t matter where I go as a

wave of metro-riders carry me to the exit.

The path ahead is a test for the sole (and soul). There have been umpteen times when I have had to ditch my favourite pair of heels because of the sheer amount of walking involved here.

I walk down the bright lanes of Naif souk; a palette of Nile-greens, camel-yellows and earth tones transcend this high-rise into the fictional city of Agrabah (think Disney’s 1992 Oscar-winning movie Aladdin). Naif is unlike any Emirati bazaar, which usually boasts good air-conditioning and dramatic interiors. Instead, Naif, with its shops, cafés and foot traffic, is Dubai for locals. Teeming with shoppers, this is one of the city’s most popular go-to spots for every retail need. The narrow lanes here have the finest of fabrics on display – from light-catching silk scarves to crisp cottons. I taste a few dry figs and chocolates heaving from the stores. Eateries, squeezed in between the shops offer aromatic kebabs and freshlybrewed milk tea.

Dubai maybe known as a concrete jungle but locals often catch their breath in greener spaces. Besides the usual desert safaris, the Ras Al Khor wetlands is a prime getaway. This sanctuary, reserved for such migratory birds as flamingos and herons, is also a photographer’s paradise.

For thrill seekers, Dubai has plenty of kayaking and boating options at the Hatta Dam. One can also head to Jebel Jais, one of the highest peaks in the UAE.

Care for a mayo and cabbage shawarma?

Hole in the wall cafeterias offer shawarmas altered for simple tastebuds. Owned mostly by South Asian expats, the cafés offer their own version of the Levantine cuisine. The staff and clientele of most cafes speak Malayalam or Urdu and will assume you do too. If you happen to visit one of these establishments, ask the waiter to skip the salad and add extra tahina (sesame sauce) in your sandwich.

Each section in Al Seef, a lesser-explored heritage district of the city, is like an open-air studio its yellow lights and Prussian blue tiles.

The vibrant Al Ras is a refreshing visual break from the conventional steel-andglass stations. My next stop is the Waterfront Market at Deira, a busy sea-facing >> 6:00 Pm neighbourhood. The covered market in Deira corniche (waterfront promenade) has been trading since the early 1990s. Hannover Hannover is more than just the capital of Germany’s Lower Saxony state. A UNESCO City of Music, it is where stunning monuments, historical sites and melody come together in one stunning melting pot, says Vijaya Pratap

The aroma of spiced chicken fills the air around me, as does the familiar tune of the popular 1950s Bollywood song “Mudh mudh ke na dekh...” I watch in delight as a swiftfingered chef at a roadside food stall hums the song while rolling a shawarma. As I take a hearty bite of the delicious treat, he is joined by his partner, who politely enquires about the roll and also whether I am enjoying the song. “We realise you are from India, hence the musical treat,” they smile.

I am not surprised. After all, I am in Hannover, the heart of Germany’s Lower Saxony – a city that lives and breathes music. This is where the first music cassette was produced, the first CD was pressed and the vinyl record invented. No wonder that it was declared a UNESCO City of Music in 2014! The city is also noted for its diversity in musical genres – from pop and rock via jazz to early music (Medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque), and from classical to contemporary. And I cannot wait for Hannover to unfold its musical side.

My first stop is at the Museum of Energy History, where I see the world’s first gramophone, which still works. Among the museum’s other highlights is the historical collection of Deutsche Gramophone (a record label for German classical music) founded in 1898.

Another attraction here is a jukebox named ‘Rock-Ola’, from the early 1960s, which can play over 100 classic songs! Excited, I request for a disco number from the movie Saturday Night Fever. The machine searches, pops out a shiny black vinyl and plays, and I jive to the tunes of “Stayin’ alive”.

Five minutes away from the museum stands the New Town Hall, one of Hannover’s most interesting structures as it’s built on a foundation of 6,026 beech-tree piles and crowned with a domed tower, which dominates the city’s skyline. This building serves as the residence of the mayor and is where all meetings and official events are held. The

magnificent fountains and the numerous varieties of flowering plants. It is easy to lose track of time here, such is the charm and magnitude of this place.

landmark is open to visitors. But what I find most exciting here is the dome’s diagonal lift. It transports me at a 17-degree angle to the top from where I take in breathtaking views of the city and the Harz mountains in the distance.

In Hannover, you will find art in almost every street.

Look out for vibrant works by noted artists like Niki de Saint Phalle. They can be found at nearly every street corner. The city, which is best visited between the months of March and June, boasts more than 200 sculptures, designs and installations.

At stone’s throw distance is the 14thcentury Gothic church Aegidienkirche.

One of the three churches in the city’s Old Town, it is now in ruins. Yet as I walk in the courtyard of this historic place, I am mesmerised by the towering walls and the Peace Bell, which was donated by the city of Hiroshima (Japan).

It’s a pleasant afternoon and with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, I head over to the Herrenhausen Gardens, one of the most popular landmarks of the city. I stroll around the park marvelling at the baroque figures,

By the time I leave the garden, it’s time for dinner. I settle at Brauhaus Ernst August (a brewery with a restaurant) with a mug of freshly-brewed beer and order my food – grilled salmon with rice timbale (finelyminced meat cooked with other ingredients in a mould of rice), fried vegetables and lemon butter. After the meal, I stop by a small nightclub, which is no bigger than a large living room with a sizeable stage to support local independent musicians. Nothing calms the soul like good music.

A must visit for all music lovers is the city’s Opera House. Built in 1845-52, it is an impressive neoclassical structure. It is now home to the city’s professional opera company, Staatsoper Hannover that offers some of the greatest operatic productions during its season (from September to June).

I settle in to watch a ballet titled Nijinsky on my last night here. It narrates the story Vaslav Nijinsky, said to be the most celebrated male ballet dancer and choreographer of the 20th century. As spellbinding the dancers are, I am distracted by the background score. Slowly, I recognise the works of Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and French composer Claude Debussy, and it fills me with happiness. I couldn’t have asked for a better note to end my trip to this beautiful city on.

Uncomplicating mythology New York Times bestselling author Ashwin Sanghi opens up to Vinayak Surya Swami about his love for the written word, chancing upon story ideas at unlikely places and his idea of an ideal vacation

Ashwin Sanghi hails from a family of businessmen but it was his creative bent of mind and flair for writing that guided him into the literary world. Today, he is one of India’s most popular authors but the journey wasn’t easy. His first literary work, The Rozabal Line, was rejected by 47 publishers and literary agents before he selfpublished it in 2007. In 2008, a prominent publishing house re-published it.

In 2014, his book Private India made it to the prestigious New York Times bestselling list. After that there was no looking back for this author, who has dabbled in all genres of literature: from fiction and non-fiction to mythology. We get talking to the prolific writer just as he launches his latest book, The Vault of Vishnu.

You grew up in a business-oriented family. How did books and literature come into the picture?

My nanaji [maternal grandfather], who lived in Kanpur, used to send me books

every week – that was what got me interested in the written word. Growing up, the arrival of his books was a constant factor. The 300-odd books that he sent me served as my introduction to reading. I was a voracious reader and I believe that the storyteller in me emerged because of that.

Some of your early books were works of non-fiction but lately, your narratives delve into ancient mythology and interpretations of historical events.

What do you enjoy writing the most?

The genre does not really matter because ultimately what one does when writing, is tell a story. If the story isn’t engrossing, readers will not turn the page. Saying that, I’ll admit that there is indeed a slight difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. With the former, I can let my imagination run free and be far more liberal with my narrative. My non-fiction books are usually done with co-authors as I do not consider myself an expert in

For your first book The Rozabal Line, you travelled to Kashmir for research and to Gujarat for The Krishna Key. How often do you travel for writing?

One always travels with a different mindset.

I may travel to a city for a literary festival or for a particular book that I am writing. Then again, not all books demand moving around in search of material. Chanakya’s Chant, for example, did not require me to travel at all as I was already familiar with the places I was writing about. But The Krishna Key involved writing about the life of Lord Krishna and for that, I visited places like Mathura, Vrindavan and Dwarka.

My new book, The Vault of Vishnu, is set in ancient China, so, I have spent almost six weeks in that country over the last two years.

Where do you like to travel to, when not researching for a book?

As much as I dislike saying it, I am quite monotonous when it comes to vacations. I have a few regular haunts as, for me, familiarity is important. I have a beautiful weekend home in Khandala [near Mumbai], where I usually go to catch up on my writing. I love going

Could you tell us more about The Vault of Vishnu?

When we think of India and China, the first thing that comes to mind is that they are Asian superpowers. If we look at ancient times, there was a flourishing trade between these two great nations. For example, Buddhism, which was born in India, travelled to China and then around the world from there. Similarly, South Indian martial arts are very similar to the practices in China. My book relates to these ancient flows of ideas, knowledge and technologies between these countries, and the implications in the modern day.

You have often recounted how the idea for Keepers of the Kalachakra came to you through a recurring dream. Does this happen often?

Every book involves the genesis of a core idea. Chanakya’s Chant was actually born out of the oft repeated phrase “the good old days”. But I wondered, in the world of politics, were the old days really good? That led to a comparison between the politics of today and that of the Mauryan times. The Krishna Key emerged from a chance conversation I had with someone who spoke about Lord Vishnu’s 10th avatar [or Kalki avatar], which was yet to come. The subject intrigued me so I immediately started my research and wound up with a thriller around the theme. The Rozabal Line was the result of an unplanned visit to the shrine [of the same name] in Kashmir.

On many occasions, there is more than one idea. It is only when I have juggled them enough and have one recurring thought, that I am actually able to direct my time and effort towards following it up.
