Welcome aboard Air India, your very own national carrier. One nation – many worlds is how India with its rich and varied tourist attractions can be best described. And that is why India outside its shores is better known as Incredible India. With its rich treasure trove of heritage, religious, leisure and wildlife destinations, beaches and snow-clad mountains, and an immensely varied and rich cultural heritage, India indeed offers the finest kaleidoscope experience to tourists who seek to explore it.

Tourism is all about travel and Air India, with the widest reach of domestic and international destinations, provides the finest way to explore India. “Ghumo India” a special package has been launched to promote domestic tourism for families. Another unique initiative is mounting of descriptive images of domestic tourist destinations inside the wide bodied Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft that bring foreign tourists to India. And the latest initiative is mounting images of heritage and natural destinations on the exterior of one Boeing 777 aircraft, and shall cover our entire fleet soon.

Most of the images for these two initiatives have been provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, the nodal ministry for spearheading the development and growth of Indian tourism. We are grateful to them for their support. World Tourism Day, the 27th of September, witnessed Toronto being linked to Delhi by a thrice-a-week flight utilising a Boeing 777 aircraft, thereby fulfilling a long pending need of a direct connection between the two countries. Also on the cards are new flights to Nairobi, London, Doha and Kuwait in our eternal quest for bringing the world closer to us. For the convenience of flyers who need help at airports, we have launched “Namaskar Seva” for providing complete assistance right from arrival to departure at a very nominal fee. This service has begun at Delhi airport and will be extended to all airports in due course. Like in the past, the national carrier stood out once again by carrying almost 70,000 devotees for Haj to Mecca and Medina.

You would have seen reports on the proposed disinvestment of Air India, the successful conclusion of which will bring out in full measure its true potential. In the interim your national carrier will strive for excellence in services and improving domestic and international connectivity. I look forward to your feedback.

Every year, as dark monsoon clouds give way to wispy white ones, every Bengali feels a tug towards home. This is the annual homecoming season, when families and friends gather to rejoice the coming home of Maa, or Goddess Durga, as she is fondly referred to in the state of West Bengal. But not just in the eastern part of India, autumn is the season of festivals across the country. From Durga Puja to Navratri, and from Dussehra to Diwali, this October is all about prayers, fasts and feasts! Turn the pages of Shubh Yatra to celebrate all these festivals with us. Also, get a colourful glimpse of a Ramleela performance from New Delhi, a city that hosts over 1,000 such plays during Navratri, retelling tales from the Ramayana.

In 1931, when Gandhiji was in England, he made his first radio broadcast for the US. The first words that he said during the broadcast were: “Do I have to speak into this thing?”
News and views from Air India Air India launched its thrice-a-week Delhi to Toronto non-stop flight and Mumbai-Dehradun-Varanasi flight
Air India launched its thrice-a-week Delhi to Toronto non-stop flight with a convenient connection from Amritsar and other cities, fulfilling a long-standing desire from the travel fraternity here and the Indian diaspora in Canada. The inaugural flight took wings on September 27, 2019, World Tourism Day, with Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani lighting the lamp at Terminal 3 of New Delhi’s airport with
senior AI directors. A cake was cut by children amongst passengers before the CMD cut the ribbon to launch boarding. A highlight of the event was the exuberant and engaging bhangra dance to celebrate the occasion. To commemorate the ‘Celebrating India’ theme, Air India had decorated its Boeing 777-ER aircraft, operated for this inaugural flight, with
pictures of historical monuments, nature and wildlife to showcase India’s cultural heritage. The aircraft was given the name Jammu & Kashmir. The plush new B-777 aircraft offering spacious seat in Economy class, delicious inflight meals and unparalleled baggage allowance should make this flight a natural choice for tourists, students and professionals besides the NRIs.
Air India linked picturesque Dehradun with the city of temples Varanasi with an Airbus 319 aircraft on September 28, fulfilling the aspiration of residents of both the cities. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat lit the ceremonial lamp along with other dignitaries and senior Air India executives including Ms Mallik, AI CD, and flagged off the inaugural flight to Varanasi.
Going that extra mile... Our cabin crew is our true brand ambassador and who enhance the organisation’s image by going that extra mile to make our passengers smile. This was reiterated when one of our passengers, during her flight to London from New Delhi, wanted a special liquid diet meal on board. Such a special meal was difficult to arrange during a flight. At the same time, a passenger could not go without any meal for the nine-hour flight. One of our cabin crew Dnyanada Joshi rose to the challenge by readily using her personal hand-blender to make a liquid diet from the best ingredients available on the flight and prepared just the kind of meal that the passenger was looking for. This quick-thinking and spontaneous act earned accolades from the passenger and her family members who presented her with a book apart from expressing sincere gratitude. Well done Dnyanada!

Leaders in all respect A two-day interactive leaders seminar was recently organised by Air India’s Inflight Services (IFS) Department in New Delhi to draw upon the rich pool of talent and experience amongst the cabin crew members and develop their leadership capabilities. Over 110 cabin crew members and ground personnel in various leadership positions in the IFS Department attended the event. The seminar, which was inaugurated by Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani, saw active participation from Air India departmental heads. The event also showcased the brilliant in-house talent in a cultural event organised by the IFS members from the Northern Region. A highlight of the event was a fashion show that saw participation from several cabin crew members.
The men’s clothing for the IFS fashion show were designed by Vicky Saini from New Delhi, while the ones for women were styled by Tanay Pareek from Jaipur. Also in attendance was Arunima Lohani (in red saree), wife of Ashwani Lohani, CMD Air India
Fulfilling desires Seventeen-year-old Nidhin Thiyagarajan, a cancer patient, has always dreamt of being a pilot. He aspires to pursue aeronautical engineering to fulfil his dream and has always been keen to get a feel of the cockpit and know the basic operating mechanism of an aircraft. Air India pulled out all stops to fulfill his wish when he was escorted into a parked aircraft and given a chance to sit inside the cockpit. The Make-A-Wish Foundation with which Air India collaborated was all praise for Team Air India in Chennai led by Regional Director Southern Region, Corporate Communications, Security, Operations and other departments involved in playing a role to make the event a success. Nidhin, dressed as a pilot, was overwhelmed to enter the cockpit with the pilots and cabin crew welcoming him and explaining basic aircraft operations. Nidhin exclaimed, “I will cherish this day and it will help me go forward in my career. Thank you Air India and Make-A-Wish Foundation for fulfilling this wish for me.”

CREW CORNER 2.0 This section focusses on the exceptional employees of Air India working tirelessly with a smile on their faces
Eye on the goal When Pranshu Kapoor joined the aviation industry, he wondered whether or not he would survive amidst the experienced. But not only did he survive but received plenty of appreciation for his professionalism from colleagues and crew alike. He was then offered a position in the A320, in the dynamic and challenging pilot roster section. He has achieved success owing to his undeterred determination and hard work.
A man of action Pankaj Kumar, deputy CAE, AIESL, joined Air India in 2004 after finishing his education in BSc Engg from BIT Sindri, Dhanbad, followed by MTech in Mechanical Engg with specialisation in “Production and Industrial System Engg” from IIT Roorkee. He has worked on the Majestic B-747-400, B-777-200LR/300ER and has now added the B-787-8 to his kitty. He has over 15 years of experience under his wings and it is always a pleasure to see his warm smile and his commitment towards his job. He is a team player and motivator and is a pleasure to be around.
Serve with a smile Rajkumar joined Air India in December 2004, and started flying in February 2005 onboard the A-320 before moving up onto the A-300 and A-330. Eventually, he got trained on the B-787 in 2016. He has been a trainer for Star Alliance and was a part of the Air India’s IOSA Team 2013. Recently, he has been promoted to a Base Supervisor in addition to his flying duties. Other than being phenomenal at his job and sporting a professional attitude, Rajkumar has also been a part of the Rescue Operations in Libya. His hobbies include learning foreign languages, yoga and Qigong. He truly believes that “positive attitude can help you achieve all your dreams and goals”. He says he is always aiming to give passengers the “Customer Delight” experience on-board every Air India flight he is in. Woman of many talent Prerna Tiwari, who hails from Meerut, joined Air India in 2005 and today is a deputy chief cabin crew. She is a graduate in Arts, Fashion and Textile Designing. She loves reading and practicing yoga. She has received the Flying Star Award in 2015 and been appreciated and awarded for her Hindi announcements by Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani. She has beautifully represented Air India in IIFA in Newark and been a part of the Independence Day parade in 2017. Her inaugural flights include Sydney, Milan, Madrid, Washington, Copenhagen and Frankfurt. She even went to Seattle to get a 787 Dreamliner delivered to Air India.
Dreams come true Shagun Batra hails from Hisar, Haryana. She joined Air India Express as a cabin crew at the age of 19 in 2017. The last two and a half years were no less than a roller coaster ride for her when she moved to Kerala, where she was exposed to a different culture, language, food and lifestyle. The change of environment was challenging but she adapted and embraced it. Travelling liberates her and no matter what comes her way, she knows how to tackle the situation and come out of adversities gracefully - be it in her in life or on a flight. She says of her boss Capt Pushpinder Singh, “Once there was a problem and he took immediate action stating that Air India employees, especially women, need to feel safe and happy at work, where gender equality prevails. This is the reason I feel blessed to work with Air India.” This section is conceptualised by Captain Rishabh Kapur, a third-generation Air India pilot. He has received numerous laurels for his courage and service to the country and Air India. Please write to rishabh.kapur@airindia.in or fill in the in-flight feedback form

(Clockwise from top): A large-scale painting of Prime Minister Modi and Mahatma Gandhi, a silver vase, a life-size picture of PM Modi on silk that has been priced at INR 2.5 lakh
From the PM, with LOVE Mementos received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last year are up for e-auction and can be viewed at an exhibition in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi
Did you know? The price range of the articles in this auction starts at INR 200 and goes upto INR 2.5 lakh. A letter will be sent from the Government of India to the top 20 highest bidders complimenting them for their contribution towards Namami Gange project . One can participate in this e-auction at www. pmmementos.gov.in till October 3.
A talapatachitra (artwork and paintings done on dried palm leaves) artwork adorns the wall on my right along with a number of prayer wheels of various sizes. Shawls and brightlycoloured paintings on the left wall grab my attention. But I cannot help but admire the small model of a caparisoned elephant that stands in front of me on a pedestal. This is no ordinary exhibition showcasing some stunning pieces of work from across the country. I am inside the administrative wing of the National Gallery of Modern Art, which will, for the next few weeks, display artefacts that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received as mementos in the last one year. And these artefacts - as many as over 2,700 of them including about 500 shawls, over 900 angavastram (a piece of white cloth draped over the shoulders), 88 pagris (head-dress), swords, ploughs and jackets portraying the diversity of India - are up for e-auction! There are some stunning works of art too – all depicting and reflecting the strong-willed persona of the Prime Minister. Two among them – a painting of PM Modi’s face on a dried banyan leaf and another, a portrait of

While inaugurating the auction, Prahlad Singh Patel, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, said that Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister of India “who has decided to auction all the gifts he receives for a noble cause of conserving the lifeline of the country”. But this is not the first time that an initiative as noble as this has been taken. In January 2019, over 1,800 gifts received by PM Modi were auctioned off in a span of 14 days. Lansdowne
A chance encounter of wildlife enthusiast Vinit Bajpai with a leopard amidst the green valleys of this hill station calls of two Himalayan gorals. It was unlikely that they had been alarmed by my presence as I was nowhere near them and was sitting absolutely still. Which meant only one thing – they have seen a predator close by. And in Lansdowne reside only two such species – Himalayan black bear and leopard!
I stayed put and then, in the fading light I saw him – a majestic male leopard in his prime, walking boldly; its tail moving gracefully with each step 42 I Shubh Yatra I October 2019
It was a typical Sunday evening in Lansdowne – kids playing cricket near my house, weekend tourists descending the winding road leading to Deriya Khal and an Army band playing patriotic tunes. I decided to step out for a walk without the faintest idea how unforgettable it was about to become. Midway, I came across a rock overlooking a small valley and sat on it to admire the view. My reverie was broken by the
I triangulated the gorals, vaguely gauging their location based on their calls. A few anxious minutes passed and for once, I even thought of turning back. But I stayed put and then, in the fading light, about 150 ft away, I saw him – a majestic male leopard in his prime, walking boldly; its tail moving gracefully with each step. Luckily I was carrying my camera and instantly focussed it on him. An insignificant move on my part caught his eye and he halted in his tracks, staring at me. Then with his belly pressed to the ground, he moved behind a rock and stared at me from there allowing me to get a few clear shots. I left him crouching behind the rock, thanked him for revealing himself to me and came back home while he headed for his routine search for his next meal.

They say there’s no joy like reading a good book. We bring you the month’s top four The institute
‘All forms of storytelling are good’ Advertising professional-turned-author Anuja Chauhan, whose debut book The Zoya Factor has been turned into a Bollywood film, tells Shrabasti Mallik You started your career in advertising. How did that experience help with your writing? There are three ‘R’s in advertising: rapidity, resilience and repertoire. So you need to be able to write fast on many topics and do so time and again. This also gives you a thick skin because your work gets rejected very often and the deadlines are really intense. Also, you cannot really afford to bore people, so you have to learn to be entertaining. These are the things you learn there. It is also a very visual medium and requires suitable narratives. All of these lessons help me when I write.
Air India, for me, has always been about luxury and travelling in style. My mother too enjoys travelling in the airlines’ J Class. - Anuja Chauhan
The book was written before India won the 2011 World Cup. Why did you stick with the 1986 World Cup win for the movie? What I was writing in 2006, was about an imaginary world cup and I made the narrative up as I went along. Then came the real World Cup that India won in 2011. For the movie, the director took the call of taking the trajectory of the 2011 World Cup and followed the schedule of the tournament – quarter-finals against Australia, semi-finals against Pakistan

and finals against Sri Lanka. In the book, however, India takes on Australia in the finals as that was the dream then.
Were you involved in the movie scripting? For the movie, I was asked to take a look at some of the romantic scenes, write dialogues for them, and essentially help structure the screenplay. It was an additional credit as they already had a dialogue and a screenplay writer on board. Tell us about the transition from an advertising professional to a full-time writer. It has been really good. Books are always the best way to express yourself as that is where you have complete creative control. That is where the complete vision of the writer is. What happens elsewhere are compromises of various sorts – budgets, deadlines and the director’s vision. Whereas with a book, every decision, every written word belongs to the author alone. And I like that. One reason I stopped working in advertising was that every time an ad would not do well, there were so many excuses I could make and factors I could blame. Whereas with a book, I can’t do that, which is equally scary and motivating. What is your opinion on the influence of digital platforms? I think all forms of storytelling are good. What I like about digital platforms is that everything has a longer format, there are multiple seasons, which allows you to write layered characters. It’s the closest form to reading, I feel.

AIR AIR INDIA INDIA ROUTE ROUTE
Air India flies nonstop between Delhi and Seoul, four times a week
It has barely been a few minutes since we have exited Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and my daughter is already on her phone, determining the distance to K-Star Road, one of South Korea’s hotspots for K-Pop fans. Dotted with GangnamDols (a compound word of Gangam, idol and doll), human-scale bear like statues representing images of the famous K-pop bands and groups, this stretch of road is chock-a-block with teenage girls squealing in delight as they spot their favourite Gamgamdol and taking countless photographs, wide-eyed-tourists taking in the buzzing atmosphere and a few like me, trying to grapple with the K-Pop wave that has taken over the world by storm! But then, that’s the beauty of Seoul. On one hand you have swanky, upscale sights that boast the best amenities modern technology can provide and on the other, you have picturesque yet traditional neighbourhoods that have not only retained their old-world charm but also narrate glorious stories of the bygone years. Of course, you have the key streets too with a vibe found in almost every touristy destination across the world but if you wish to discover the soul of the city, follow me.
BUKCHON HANOK
This old-fashioned village comes with an extensive history positioned between Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeok Palace and Jongmyo Royal Shrine. It comprises alleys and well-kept hanoks (a home built in traditional Korean style) that date back to the Joseon Dynasty and display centuriesold city architecture and planning. This is where we begin our Seoul discovery with a guide. We are mesmerised by this inhabited area that boasts as many as 900 hanoks with most occupants following a traditional lifestyle. Walking around, we notice many women strolling about dressed in pretty

if not more. One of the sights that still lingers in my mind is the stark contrast the patterned walls and tiled roofs of the hanoks present against the highrises of the modern city in the distance! All the Instagram-worthy walking makes us hungry. We find a cosy corner at Cityfood Noodles Myung-ga. A small restaurant tucked between large keepsake shops run by a mother-son duo, it serves delicious bowls of noodles, all reasonably priced too. We go for noodle soup with spicy seafood and we are not disappointed.

hanboks (traditional Korean outfit), children playing hide and seek, and groups of young adults chatting and laughing at street corners. Today, most of these hanoks operate as cultural centres, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. For a true blue experience of what traditional Seoul has to offer, I would suggest you spend at least half a day here,
Seochon, one of the earlier neighbourhoods allied with the Joseon era and Korean literature, expanses out from the western gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and extends to the base of Mt Inwangsan. We are told that while it is less crowded as compared to the more-famed Bukchon, it has more hanoks. I would say that Seochon is a wee bit modern too, but the neighbourhood, even today, has an old-style aesthetic, is cosier and not over-visited at all. We reach Tongin Market around lunch. This marketplace goes back to 1941 and to-

day offers an exclusive dining experience! Seoul has several markets but what makes this one unique is the Dosirak Café, which translates to ‘lunch box’ in Korean. You pay cash in exchange for 10 coins and a lunch tray. You can use the coins to buy your favourite food from any of the partaking stalls inside the market. Tongin is also popular for gireum tteokbokki or rice cakes that are fried fresh and come with two sauces – spicy red and soy. With over 60 years of business, locals come all the way here just to taste the unique fried rice cake. Among the notto-be-missed delicacies here include the sikhye, a traditional beverage made of rice. The bookstore cafe called Daeh Oh Bookstore 33 is hugely popular too as it served as the backdrop for Shark, a popular South Korean television show. There are numerous washed-out book covers that would put to rest any doubt one may have about how old this bookstore is. Did I mention that the bookstore is run by a grandmother whose grandson owns a watermelon juice store next door?
BUAM DONG
Located amid the mountains Inwangsan and Bugaksan, Buam Dong is a charming,

picturesque and artsy village with oodles of appeal and an antiquated allure. Upon arriving here we feel like expatriates from Seoul, even though we are barely a mile away from the main palace. Here, upscale homes are tucked away in the hills, there are no McDonald’s or French baguettes in sight and no venders on the streets either. Add to this an assortment of art galleries, bakeries, classic restaurants, museums and exceptional craft stores and you’re in for an interesting and fun-filled day. An excursion here is incomplete without visiting the Seoul Fortress Wall against the mountains. We also make a pit stop at the Seoul Museum, home to three floors of momentary, and enduring modern and traditional art created by local and foreign artists. The top floor gives admission to the museum’s shop as well as Seokpajeong, a splendid and breathtaking old hanok that was once an imperial villa. A good idea is to relish a coffee with a view, tread along the fortress wall, meander through the galleries and museums, have lunch, and conclude with a cupcake. It is a gorgeous break for the soul!

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi has been depicted on a vast number of stamps issued by several countries across the globe, including the United Kingdom. It is said that the life of Mahatma Gandhi, as he is fondly referred to, has been depicted in stamps issued by around 150 countries. India was the first to pay tribute to him with a stamp issue. In 1948, on the first anniversary of independence, it issued a set of four stamps, with the word “Bapu” written in both Hindi and Urdu, symbolising Gandhiji’s devotion to communal harmony. This set of four stamps on the Father of the Nation is among the rarest of all Gandhi stamps from around the world. Three of these stamps were in the denomination of 1.5,

3.5 and 12 annas, while the fourth one was of INR 10. At that time 16 annas made a rupee. The stamp series valued at INR 10 is the most special and is always in demand among philatelists. These stamps were designed and printed in Switzerland but some of them were embossed with the word “Service” at the India Security Press at Nashik in Maharashtra, and reserved for the use of the office of the first Indian governor general, Chakravarty Rajagopalachari. In 2011, the David Feldman Stamp Auction House in Geneva, Switzerland, claimed to have sold one INR 10 value Mahatma Gandhi stamp with the word “Service”
printed on it for a price of Euro 144,000 (about INR 1.5 crore), the highest price ever paid for a single Indian stamp. In 2017, another record was created when a set of four stamps from the same series was auctioned for £500,000 (about INR 4.4 crore). The block of four was sold to a private collector in Australia. Only 13 of the 1948 Gandhi 10-rupee stamps with “Service” printed on them are in circulation today. In 1961, the US became the first foreign country to issue a commemorative stamp in honour of the Mahatma, honouring him with the title “Champion of Liberty”. The second country to do so was Congo in 1967. In

Bhutan during the Mahatma’s centenary celebrations and those released by Zambia and Barbuda depicting a young Gandhi are some of the other significant ones. There are also Dominican stamps where Gandhiji is featured alongside Martin Luther King Jr, Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt, which were issued to commemorate 40 years of human rights. While most stamps issued internationally feature the leader’s smiling countenance, there are some which depict him in his trademark posture, marching with a walking stick. A stamp issued by Brazil showcases a Brazilian spinning wheel instead of the traditional Indian charkha that the Mahatma used.
In India, stamps commemorating Gandhiji’s life and philosophies have been issued regularly. Legendary Indian artist Nandalal Bose captured Gandhiji’s famous Dandi march through an iconic painting, which is adapted in the design of various stamps and cancellations (a postal marking) around the world. A set of four stamps marking his Dandi march was issued in 2005. A stamp bearing an image of his footprints too was issued to mark the historical event in the country’s fight for independence. India and Austria both require time to be explored As India and Austria celebrate 70 years of bilateral relationship, the Austrian ambassador to India, Brigitte Ă–ppinger-Walchshofer, talks about the strong bilateral ties, the rich cultural exchanges and tourism prospects of the two nations India and Austria are celebrating 70 years of bilateral ties. How has the relationship strengthened? India and Austria have come a long way since they established formal diplomatic relations in 1949. Seventy years later, Austria is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe with an annual GDP per capita of approximately US $ 55,000 and India has become a major regional power and a driving force in Asia. Our bilateral relations have also come a long way and have developed strongly. Culture and science also constitute important elements in our bilateral relations. Many of our universities cooperate with each other and the embassy’s Cultural Forum organises a number of events every year. How has tourism contributed to the ties between the two countries over the years? Tourism is a good way to learn more about a country. Those who return home happy and with good memories become the best ambassadors for the country they have visited. Last year more than 200,000 Indians visited Austria, mainly Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck. A particular point of interest are the Crystal Worlds of Swarovski in the Federal State of the Tyrol. Austria has been a favorite destination for Bollywood films. Your comments. Over the years more than 80 Bollywood films have partly been shot in Austria, the two most recent ones being Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017 and Saaho this year. Our palaces, castles and fortresses are as interesting for film producers as are our beautiful mountains, in winter as well as in summer. Austria’s film industry offers attractive incentives

Since my arrival in India I have travelled to Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Andhra Pradesh. I found all of these states interesting and each of them has its own beauty and fascination. I do not have a favourite. But there are still a lot of places in India that I need to visit. According to you, are there any similarities between the Austrian and Indian cultures? The beauty of our cultures lies in their differences. That makes it worthwhile

What I love the most in India
India fascinates me. India’s heritage is so diverse, just like its cuisine. There are distinct regional differences and I like to explore them. Handicraft has always fascinated me because it mirrors the culture and regional identity of the people. I like visiting craft markets, emporios and museums to explore as much as possible.
for Indians to travel to Austria and vice versa. But of course, there are also links. For example, German as well as Hindi are Indo-European languages, and scientists as well as artists have travelled between the two continents for centuries. That has left traces in our respective cultures. What are the three things that you would suggest Indians do in Austria, and vice versa? I can only suggest any traveller from India to take their time and not to rush from place to place. One can only absorb the atmosphere of a country if one stays there at least for a few days. Wander through the narrow lanes of Vienna or Salzburg on foot and sneak into the beautiful courtyards of the century-old buildings. Explore the little boutiques off the tourist tracks and rest in a coffee shop. Linger in the beautiful parks and adore art and craftsmanship of many centuries in our museums. If your time schedule permits, visit the countryside. There are charming castles to be explored, good country inns to be tested for local food and beautiful scenery to be adored. For Austrians coming to India I would say the same: take your time to inhale the atmosphere of the country and see the diversity.

Salzburg and Salzburgerland As both the city of Mozart and the location of the movie The Sound of Music, Salzburg is, without a doubt, a popular family destination. Due to its compact size, you can cover a lot of territory in one day. If you have time, add stops for coffee, cake and other local delicacies, and stretch out your sightseeing agenda. Among the most compelling attractions for families is a half-day “Sound of Music” bus tour, which offers a nice overview of the city and its surroundings. As an alternative, Fräulein Maria’s Bicycle Tour, which
covers many of the same stops in a more family-friendly way, is recommend. The must-see list also include the birthplace of Mozart in the Getreidegasse, and the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the seat of the once-mighty rulers of Salzburg. Next, take your kids on a stroll of the Old Town, where you can browse quirky shops, try on an Austrian Dirndl (traditional dress) or a pair of Lederhosen (breeches), and discover hidden passages and courtyards amid the city’s baroque architecture. “There Is Great Potential To Increase Bilateral Trade Relations Between Austria And India” Robert Luck, Trade Commissioner at the Austrian Embassy on the bilateral trade between India and Austria How has your experience been in India?
India is now the seventh biggest economy in the world and it is a privilege to work as Trade Commissioner in this dynamic and promising market. The Indian business sector is very interested in new technologies and joint ventures with Austrian companies. Already over 140 Austrian companies are having subsidiaries in India, some of them have been here for more than 50 years, which speaks for itself. But there is still great potential to further increase the bilateral trade relations between Austria and India.
What are the long terms plans for boosting business relations between India and Austria?
Advantage Austria will organise over 25 business related events until end of next year both in India and Austria. The key areas we are concentrating on are infrastructure development (Railways, Airports, Smart Cities) , environmental technologies and cooperation with India’s incredible vibrant Start Up scene. Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu’s best-kept secret, lies only a stone's throw away from the popular tourist havens of Ootacamund and Coonoor. This beautiful hill station offers visitors sweeping views of the state’s valleys coupled with the stunning Nilgiri mountains, says Rashmi Gopal Rao 74 I Shubh Yatra I october 2019
shubh-yatra.in
Colonial Connection
According to history, two British officers discovered Kotagiri back in 1819 while they were exploring the Nilgiris. The hill station has an intrinsic connection with John Sullivan, who is credited with discovering the hill station of Ooty. It was in 1819 that this British collector visited Kotagiri and built a two-storeyed house called the Pethakal Bungalow at Kannerimukku village. In that sense, Sullivan was the first European to have his residence here. An ardent supporter of the tribal and the local communities, he was and till day continues to be a highly-revered personality in the entire region. Today, this historic bungalow has been impeccably restored and is called the Sullivan Memorial. The brick red and white facade of the building is replete with colonial style architectural elements that include arches, high ceilings and domes. It is open to visitors and houses a treasure trove of information in the form of rare photographs, newspaper cuttings and artefacts related to John Sullivan as well as the history, growth and development of Kotagiri and the Nilgiri region in general.
Kotagiri, one of the Nilgiri’s oldest hill stations, is surrounded by sprawling tea estates and waterfalls, and paints a mystical picture set against the green walls of the Nilgiris
Nothing is more rejuvenating than a holiday in the hills amidst the crisp mountain air and lush greenery, far away from the urban humdrum and chaos of city life. And, if you’re looking for a destination that is relatively undiscovered by even avid travellers, Kotagiri in the southern state of Tamil Nadu is a good bet. Located close to the more crowded and perhaps more ‘touristy’ hill stations of Ootacamund (popularly called Ooty) and Coonoor, Kotagiri too is nestled in the midst of the blue mountains ranges of the Nilgiris. In fact, Kotagiri is the oldest and third-largest hill station of the Nilgiris and is located 30 and 20 km (approximately) from Ooty and Coonoor, respectively.
The bungalow also houses very valuable information related to the tribes of the region, mainly the Todas, Badagas, Irulas, Kotas and Kurumbas. Many exclusive pictures that are showcased, display the traditions of these tribes including their festivals, dances and other customs. The building is also highly significant as it is home to the Nilgiri Documentation Centre, a premier organisation that works towards preserving the regions’ natural beauty and tribal heritage. Apart from the Sullivan Memorial, St Luke’s Church is another symbol of majestic colonial beauty. Standing tall, this church, with its red brick portico that envelopes the entire exterior, is a landmark structure and a sight not to be missed.

Trekker’s
Delight
Although Kotagiri is small in area, there are a handful of scenic trekking trails that are much loved by novice and seasoned adventurers alike. The panoramic hike to the Catherine Falls is one of the most sought-after one here. The road to the falls passes through a peak resembling a dolphin’s nose, pine forests and aromatic tea gardens. From the base of the towering falls emerge a number of hiking trails that lead to the nearby Longwood shola forest. Another trail leading to Kodanad goes through a lush green meadow, tea estates and the Moyar river. There are a few travel companies that curate such trekking experiences but if you wish, you can explore these tracks on your own, with a little help from the friendly locals.

Nature’s Paradise
The name of this quaint hill station that is perched at an altitude of close to 1,950 m above sea level translates to “the mountains of the Kotas”. Incidentally, the Kotas are one of the main indigenous tribes who inhabit the Nilgiris. Kotagiri is a region of expansive green landscapes and lush tea gardens. It is privy to several spectacular vistas of seemingly unending mountain ranges. Surrounded by the evergreen Shola forests, known for their biodiversity, this small hill station is dotted with several waterfalls and pristine meadows. It is little wonder that this striking hill station is a favourite with hikers and trekkers alike. With multiple trekking trails, Kotagiri is an idyllic and rejuvenating retreat.
Kotagiri At a Glance
Just 16 km from Kotagiri is the resplendent Catherine Falls, a popular haunt with tourists. Said to have been named after a British coffee planter’s wife, the falls cascading
in all their glory from a height of 250 ft are a sight to behold. Located around eight km from Kotagiri, the falls are accessible by a small trek, and the dense cover of greenery all around makes it a memorable outing. Elk Falls is another picturesque waterfall near Kotagiri. Located about 18 km from Kotagiri, the expansive Kodanad Estate, known to produce some of the premium quality tea in the region, is another point of interest. The drive to Kodanad is as thrilling as it is splendid, with cloud-kissed tea estates dominating the landscape and the prettiest of flowers lining the streets. Close to the estate is a vantage point, which offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding natural beauty. Rangaswamy Hill, home to the holy temple of Lord Rangaswamy, is also a frequentlyvisited spot about 20 km from Kotagiri. The hill has high religious and spiritual significance, and is revered by the Irula tribal community.
