OFFERINGS

Dear SpiceJet customer, July is the month of rain when monsoon arrives in some parts of the country, and with the arrival of monsoon comes hope for a new beginning. In tune with the season, SpiceJet has come up with a host of new offerings. With great pleasure, I share with you that we have recently added a brand new Boeing aircra to our fleet and in line with our tradition of naming our aircra a er spices, we have christened the aircra as ‘Red Chilli’. The cover story of this issue will tell you more about this initiative. Amongst new monsoon offerings, we introduce SpiceFlex - a bundled fare that offers a bunch of add-ons at a discounted price. We are also in the process of reconfiguring our aircra seating arrangement to offer seats with extra legroom in the first five rows in our Boeing aircra . I also invite you to try our new menu, ‘Hot Meals. Warm Smiles’, prepared in collaboration with TajSATS and Cafe Coffee Day. Know more about all these offerings in this magazine or you can visit our website for the latest updates. SpiceJet is commi ed to provide you the lowest airfares, along with the convenience of a customer-friendly network. With our new summer schedule designed around you, now you can fly to more destinations from your city at comparatively lower cost. This month, Spiceroute, our in-flight magazine, is full of diverse topics. Apart from highlighting those destinations that look splendid during monsoon, the issue talks about the latest trends in ta oo-making, modern styles of restaurant decor, new trends in theatre, and many other interesting topics. In the Concern section, read about IAVI, an organisation with a mission to ensure the development of safe, effective, and preventive HIV vaccines. For any kind of suggestion and feedback, you can write to us at custrelations@spicejet.com. Happy flying!

LETTERS FROM

SPICEJET CUSTOMERS PROVIDING HASSLE-FREE TRIP Dear SpiceJet Management, I would like to share my sincere and deep appreciation for Ms. Neha Marathe (emp id 9780) from your Bangalore International Airport ground staff. On June 07, 2014, I was travelling from Bangalore to Pune with my family on SG 228 taking off at 7:25pm. We were at the counter, handled by Ms Nirupa, at 6pm. We had few kgs of excess baggage since my husband had travelled from South America to Bangalore. Ms. Nirupa was very confused and suggested we pay excess baggage for 25 kgs or upgrade to SpiceMax tickets by paying `500 additional per head. I agreed for the SpiceMax tickets and requested to check-in the luggage. of the But she insisted that we redistribute the weight of all bags. So, I had to then open and repack all my baggage (check in and cabin). After doing this, I went back in the queue and coincidentally went to another counter manned by Ms. Neha. She was extremely polite and when I informed her that we have some excess baggage, she immediately asked, "Ma’am, did anyone travel internationally? If so, I will give you the baggage waiver for 8 kgs per passenger." Also, noticing that I was travelling with two kids and a senior citizen, she obliged to check-in two bags as cabin luggage. I was really thankful to her for understanding my problem. Next time, I will be encouraged to choose SpiceJet because of members like her. Geethanjali

TIMELY HELP I travelled to Madurai on March 23, 2014, with my family and was to return on March 28. On my return, I missed my flight from Madurai to Chennai due to an accident. I had no option but to buy new tickets from some other airline to catch my connecting flight which could have been in the range of `22000 for four tickets. But Mr. Vinoth (Supervisor - Madurai Airport) of your staff went out of the way to help me and save my money. He booked me on a direct flight on March 29 on the nominal charge of `1500 per head cancellation for my

Chennai Pune flight. The way he helped was extremely comforting especially after our ordeal on road. Apart from this, he along with his Sr. CSE Mr. Paramesh helped us in getting the booking in a hotel. I am very much obliged with the behaviour of your two staff members and am writing this to convey my thanks to them as well as to your organisation for nurturing such culture. Though, I have talked to them personally and conveyed this, I wish to inform the management in writing about the good work of your employees. Prasanna Karandikar

he suspense about SpiceJet’s new Boeing with an all-white livery has finally broken. The buzz which was making news for some time now has answered the question 'why all white?' To celebrate the spirit and dedication of every single person in SpiceJet, the airline painted the new Boeing 737 with two Captain and four cabin crew pictures on the sides of the aircra . While special liveries featuring people have been used by

various airlines around the world, it is believed this is the first time ever an airline had put images of its own crew on the aircra .

This aircra will be a flying billboard for SpiceJet, its people, and its mantra ‘With All Our Heart’, which is printed in large script on the right side of the aircra

It's a known fact that each SpiceJet aircra is named a er a particular spice andfollowing the same tradition, the Boeing 737 with special crew livery has been named ‘Red Chilli’. The singleaisle jet took off for the first time early last month on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai, with four flight aŠendants, whose photos adorn the sides of the aircra , serving passengers and the two Captains operating the flight. Talking about this new initiative, the enthusiastic

It is perhaps the first time ever that an airline has put images of its own crew on the aircra Sanjiv Kapoor, Chief Operating Officer (COO), SpiceJet Ltd., said, “All of us in the SpiceJet family are proud of our newest aircra that has been specially painted to celebrate the spirit and dedication of every single person in SpiceJet, to give their best to customers with all their heart.” ‘Red Chilli’ is one of the four new Boeing aircra which SpiceJet is taking factory fresh from Boeing this year to refresh its fleet, while at the same time retiring some of its older Boeing aircra . Additionally, SpiceJet also has 13 Boeing 737NGs and 42 Boeing 737MAX aircra on order. With the aim to build a ‘New SpiceJet’, the brand goes a notch above the others with its introduction of many new and exciting additions over the last few months. These positive changes have been well appreciated by one and all and the brand continues its efforts and firmly stands by its slogan ‘With all our heart’. A revamped network, schedule, brand new cabin crew weekend uniform, a mouthwatering in-flight menu with a plethora of choices

and the monsoon sale - all these have been milestones towards building the ‘New SpiceJet’. Further by introducing this new crew livery, the brand has accelerated this approach.

It's a great feeling to see yourself representing your company to the world. I would like to thank SpiceJet once again for choosing me for this wonderful opportunity and recognition.

SENSATIONAL SIX

Speaking to the spectacular six, featured on the Red Chilli, we asked each of them about their reactions to this first time ever airline initiative and how privileged they felt. Prexa Kaushik Base Officer, Delhi Base At the outset, I would like to thank the management for providing this wonderful opportunity to not only feature on the livery but also fly on this aircra 's first flight. It gives me immense pleasure and pride.

WITH ALL OUR HEART

“We are in the midst of a transformation that is resulting in employees that are charged up and highly motivated, operating a completely redesigned network with flights that are now fuller than ever,

on-time performance that is consistently in the Top 1 or 2 in India, and customer service and in-flight experience that is warm, friendly, and straight from the heart.” Sanjiv Kapoor COO, SpiceJet Ltd.

rom immaculately clean manicured gardens and roads to white washed petite houses, from the alluring blue seas to the rugged mountains that envelope the city, Muscat is like an ethereal world created from the brush of someone who has an eye for beauty. The city has a wonderful ability to time travel and can take you back in time to a few centuries as you walk past the narrow alleyways of a bustling souk or bring you back to the 21st century as you admire the modern stateof-the-art Opera House. There is a

communion of modernism and old world charm that gives the city a unique character. The locals for me are the life of this city. Humble, Hospitable and Humourous is how I would describe Omanis, in general, a rare breed to find nowadays. They are definitely proud of their culture but do not always wear it on their sleeve(s). So while a large population of men still dons the traditional floor-length dishdashas and women wear abayas, you will also spot a section of Omanis that dress more casually in western brands.

Muscat has a landscape that is very stark and hard to miss. Skyscrapers do not exist, giving you an advantage to view the craggy mountains from any part of the city. Four-wheel drives dominate the roads and motorbikes are a rare sight to see.

KHANJAR MEMENTOES You can pick up several kinds of khanjar mementoes, the iconic symbol of Oman, ranging from keychains to fridge magnets to pen drives. HALWA The Omani halwa is sweeter and thicker than its Indian counterpart and should be enjoyed hot.

DAY ONE

8.00 AM: SPIRITUAL SIGHTING My first stop was the landmark a raction of Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. A modern Islamic architectural monument, the mosque symbolises understated opulence. Shining in white marble, the archways and the intrinsic mosaic work on its walls add to the character of the mosque. But the highlight of the mosque was the gli ering chandelier that hangs from the dome which is supposed to be the world’s second largest chandelier. The mosque is flanked by four minarets looking skyward and one of the minarets is 90m high, making it the tallest structure I had seen in Muscat. 9.30 AM: VISITING THE OLD

The blue and gold façade of the palace stands in contrast to the otherwise white dominated backdrop of the city. Like the underlying theme of the city, the palace too, isn’t ostentatious as compared to other palaces in the world but still worth a glimpse. 12.00 PM: MUSEUM MUSINGS Muscat houses several museums but the one I chose to visit was Bait Al Zubair Museum. DAY TWO

2.00 PM: FOOD GALORE A er soaking in all that culture, the hunger pangs had to be satisfied. I chose to visit Kargeen Café which is a garden café-styled restaurant. A popular joint among the locals and tourists, one can enjoy local and international cuisines here while being hypnotically transported to an Arabian land by the fragrance of shishas in the air. The ‘lime nana’ which is a concoction of mint and lemon juice is a ‘must try’ at Kargeen. 6.00 PM: ‘DHOW’ED AWAY A perfect way to end my culture-filled day was to catch the sunset on a traditional dhow (wooden ships). A two-hour cruise on the dhow gives you the vantage of seeing and experiencing the city's breathtaking views over pristine waters.

8.00 AM: DISCOVERING DAYMANIYAT ISLANDS

I was keen on discovering the marine life of Oman which I was informed is exotic and rare. So I chose to visit a li le paradise called Daymaniyat islands, located over two hours away from Muscat. The notion ‘beauty lies within’ comes alive in Daymaniyat as you witness magnificent coral gardens and marine life in dazzling colours underwater. A snorkeling trip has rarely le me as enamoured as my dip in these crystal clear waters. While I swam with resplendent varieties of fishes and turtles and saw the most stunning coral reefs, the notion that Oman is a desert land quickly washed away from my mind. 12.00 PM: SOUK SEARCHING A er the wonderful snorkeling expedition, I had yet another exploration in mind. Mutrah Souk (market) is a labyrinth of colourful narrow alleyways which are filled with Omani souvenirs.

For those who like a smell of royalty, pick up a bo le of the world's most expensive perfume which is a locally produced brand called ‘Amouage’.

Amouage, established in Oman in 1983 by the Sultan of Oman, uses the traditional materials of Middle Eastern perfumery.

MOVIE & CATS Your award winning To-Let is based on the concept of shi ing. How do you relate with it and what is the significance of the cats on its posters? I’m an eternal tenant in Delhi, happy to move and constantly delighted to re-visualise my space. I have shi¬ed umpteen houses in the city. And if you notice that in any conversation between any sets of people in the film, it will be revealed that one or the other person is moving house(s) or looking for one or shi¬ing. It’s not everyday that you come across a man with a talent for every dimension of his life. We managed to borrow a sliver off his busy schedule. An excerpt...

56

Cats are one of the characters of the film, they are the motif of se ling, moving and change. They also have a curious relationship with urban spaces. My film provides a glimpse into my characters’ lives, seen through my eyes. The overtly presented characters are a single man, an artist couple, a music band and myself, as each of us try to understand what home means in the continuous cycle of migration. The city emerges as the other character, which responds uniquely to each. July 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

How did it all start? A er I finished my education, I realised design and art was my forte, so I joined ‘Response Calcu a’, an iconic institution more than an ad agency. Then I moved to Bombay and finally to Delhi, working with McCann Erikson, till I decided to only make films and set up Overdose Films as an alternative film outfit in Delhi. Overdose will be completing 11 years in December this year. What made you choose Delhi over Mumbai? I agree that it's difficult being a filmmaker based in Delhi, as it has no film industry and thus has no support system. It is a kind of a lonely enterprise for those who choose to live here. But somehow, Delhi worked with my creative energies since I came here in 1997. It gave me a sense of space to work and do my own thing. It is a city full of contrasts and that’s something which a racts me to it.

Overdose is one of the first of its kind in Delhi. What role, exactly, does it play for the scene of cinema in the capital? My idea of OVERDOSE LOCAL is to create a film collective, to have a platform for independent cinema where budding Delhi-based filmmakers will come together to collaborate and make films. Basically create an atmosphere conducive to filmmaking and film-viewing. Goethe Institut is one of the partners in this endeavor. However, as a filmmaker Bombay is constantly a part of my travel map and I work out of Delhi and Bombay. Most of your films are documentaries. Is it not difficult to structure a documentary? I prefer the word non-fiction over documentary. And I don’t differentiate between fiction and non-fiction in the way it’s generally done. Both need to tell a story, a slice of life. To me, the film form is about exploring ideas but in a narrative. That is why my films have a script where structure is decided within a larger theme. For me, they should be like music, free flowing and yet in one’s control.

Themes of moving and migration seem to have inspired you, besides music. Home as an idea opens itself to bring new truths every time. Cities are built by its countless nameless migrants who actually allow us to live here and explore ideas. I have worked on music and migration particularly in (the National Award winning) You Don’t Belong that showcases the search of an author of a very popular Bengali song we grew up with. My film takes you on a roller-coaster ride into the real journey of music across terrains of Rajasthan and Bengal. But, as a filmmaker, there are several themes playing in my head all the time. My fiction films will be about the feudal and urban divide.

58

Tell us something about your fascination with music and Indian Ocean. Music is what urges me to make cinema. And in a way, my engagement with music has led me to a category of the ‘music film’, something which doesn’t really exist as a slot. But then I never like slots, I’d rather make something completely radically un-slo ed. I recently shot TVCs for J&K Tourism, where the beautiful and enigmatic state is shown through images and music without a single word of spoken language. hilli is to India, what cheese is to Italy – you can simply never think of a dish without these flavour bombs. Such is our obsession for this spice that we have made it a part of every meal, desserts included – chilli ice cream, anyone? Chilli reached Indian shores in 1498 with Vasco Da Gama.

There are over 400 different varieties of chilli grown in the world, mainly red chilli. And India, currently, is the largest producer and consumer of them.

ORIGIN ALIKE

While all chillies grow alike, it is when they reach maturity that the difference in shape, size and colour begin to appear. The red colour, in fact, is o en the result of breakdown of chlorophyll, which coincides with the maturation of seeds, than by nature. It is this process that not only determines

the exterior colour of chillies, but also the heat tone of this spice. Consider a few examples: ‘Sweet Banana’ is pale yellowish-green in the beginning, but during maturity, it slowly changes to yellow, then orange and finally red. ‘Purple Beauty’ turns bright purple, but when fully ripe, the fruits darken to deep purplish red. The other characteristic that defines red chilli is the concentration of capsaicin in it. Scoville Heat Unit (SHU), the 100-year old methodology used to measure the ‘spiciness’ of a chilli, uses the sum of capsaicin and Capsaicinoids to judge which chilli is hot and which is not. The more it is, the ho er is the chilli.

NAIL IT RIGHT

Though not a new concept, nail art is fast gaining popularity with the young and sometimes the not so young alike. W O R D S | A NUB H O OTI

y 38 year-old-neighbour can’t wait for the next ki y party in town. No, she doesn’t want to show off her gourmet skills (she has done enough of that during the last two years), but is instead excited about her new-found 'colourful' nails (a term she has coined herself for nail art) which she claims make her feel 10 years younger!

Her teenage daughter seems equally happy as mummy’s new found fascination gives her a chance (and the permission) to have her nails done up too! Read on to know more about this trend and things to keep in mind before you hit the latest nail spa in town WHAT IS NAIL ART?

To put in layman’s language, any decorative work of art on your nails (whether hands or feet) is called nail art. Nail art is available in various forms such as glitters, nail art pen, piercing and water marbling. This apart, there is needle art, 3D art and the famous French Manicure. The latter one is the most common in India, with majority of women going for it. However, experts in the field

Yes, people are getting more aware due to the internet and paparazzi but we still have a long way to go. In India, people still shy away from getting too experimental, which is not the case worldwide." Pammy, who has assisted in getting nail art done on Madonna and the Spice Girls, says that only trained experts should be given the job of handling your nails in the correct way possible.

EXPENSIVE ART

Looking good comes with a price. While a simple nail extension can cost you anywhere from `8001200, you might have to shell anything between 2,000-5,000 for an extensive nail art. Sneha Dogra, who regularly visits the nail art parlour, Claw in Greater Kailash, Delhi, says that it is almost an obsession. "I find it very difficult to keep my nails plain now. However, that does not mean that I overspend everytime. Even a French manicure which looks great can do wonders for your nails, even though it is not very expensive. Also once you get a permanent nail art done, you need to refile it every month, which too, does not turn out to be exorbitant." Follow what your beautician says in terms of upkeep. The method of cooking also makes a great difference indeed picked up a lot over the last few years and everyone prefers home-style food now, because they don’t have the time to invest in cooking or being at home.

FROM FARM TO TABLE

72

Freshness is the key to home-style food and hotels spare no efforts in bringing the best to their guests. Chefs actually go to the market to select the best quality local vegetables. Not just buying fresh food but the method of cooking also makes a great difference in retaining the freshness, flavours and nutrients of the dish, giving it that home-style touch. Chef Ravi Saxena, Corporate Chef, Dhaba by Claridges, reiterates that the basic idea of home-style cooking is that the food is made in one go and consumed immediately. Home-style cooked food is not cooked and stored over a period of time for future meals. Similarly, at Dhaba by Claridges, a majority of dishes are based on the same concept. “All the dishes have a distinct and different taste and flavour, as we do not make a base gravy which goes in almost every dish.” Ingredients are equally crucial when cooking a simple meal. According to Chef Odolak, if ingredients are important, so is

sourcing. They ensure they source the freshest produce and also have a small patch of greenery behind the restaurant from where they get herbs, chillies and daily garnishes. Care is taken to use a mortar and pestle for grinding so that flavours remain intact. Furthermore, local suppliers are preferred by hotels to reduce carbon footprint.

MOTHER’S TOUCH

Emphasis on home-style cooked food with simple recipes from mothers and grandmothers has made hotels go a step further. To enable guests to experience the local flavours, several hotels are wooing neighbourhood housewives to share their expertise. Hotels believe that the knowledge of masalas, blending of spices and

ingredients and the personal touch that these home-makers possess, is unparalleled. Thus, hotels in Goa invite local housewives to make authentic masalas for the Goan fish and prawn curry, which guests relish. Park Hya Chennai, too had an in-house maharaj who came in from Rajasthan to give a homely touch to the food during Navratri, while JW Marrio Mumbai recently flew-in Master Chef Jyoti Arora to conduct a food promotion titled ‘Rasoi’ which focussed purely on Punjabi home-style food. Although Hotels do rope-in these home chefs, whenever possible, it may not always be feasible to do so. Thus, hotels themselves strive to keep the recipes authentic and replicate home-style cooking methods.

“Traditional recipes definitely have their own value, which is why we have a separate ghar ka khana menu in our In-Room Dining, where we offer simple, home-style food which is a balanced meal of fat, protein, and roughage. It is prepared with lesser usage of oil and spices to maintain that balance. This menu is mainly Indian and offers dishes like Pomfret Curry, Aloo Methi and Dal Khichdi,” informs Himanshu Taneja, Executive Chef, JW Marrio Mumbai.

GLOBAL CUISINES

It is not that hotels are strong only on their home turf – Indian cuisine. They are equally adept at giving the homestyle food experience across global cuisines. And that is exactly what is sought a er by guests. They want a versatile culinary experience, yet one which is home-style driven. At JW Marrio Mumbai, one can savour Spanish, Thai, Indian, Italian and French styles of home-cooking. STAX, the Italian restaurant at Hya Regency Mumbai, known for its authentic specialities, recently served Italian home-style cooking with a selection of hand-cra ed pastas

right from ‘Tajarin ai tartufi’- typical flat long pasta from 'Piedmont to the Pizzoccheri’- Ribbon shaped buck wheat flour pasta from ‘Lombardy’, prepared by the Executive Chef himself.

Hotels are going that extra mile to recreate home ambiance too HOMELY AMBIANCE

Cuisines apart, hotels are going that extra mile to recreate the home ambiance too, to make guests feel comfortable. The all-day dining restaurant at Park Hya Chennai, The Dining Room, is designed in a way that it is reflective of a private residence. Starting from the design and layout of the restaurant, which is broken into segments called Verandah, Living Room, Dining Room to the open shelves of woks, pots and pans behind the chefs, the place is evocative of any simple home. So fret not, if you can’t have your favourite home food, a hotel somewhere is going to ensure you have the same gourmet experience.

There is an appetite for eclectic spaces that influence our various moods CREATIVE CONCEPT

As the food & beverage industry grows manifold, competition has equally risen. Companies now want to put their best foot forward, and rope in designers to make their ‘brand’ stand out. “From the consumer standpoint, we are all looking for interesting ambiences to dovetail with our culinary experiences,” says Som Sengupta, Founding Partner of a design firm called Zeppelin design and environments. “There is an appetite for eclectic spaces that influence our various moods and immerse us in exciting surroundings,” he informs.

Clients too understand the importance of the right decor. Sengupta adds, “Clients who work with us are very design-oriented and understand that design can deliver the definitive business edge with a direct impact on their ROI. The hospitality industry is no different, and it has always valued design, both the aesthetic as well as the systems part.” Carrying the brand identity forward are natural extensions of the brand, such as logo, menu and interior development that must be both logical and creative, opines Singh. And the client, of course, has a lot of inputs at every stage. “We actually try and bring in a bit of the promoter’s personality into the decor. This helps us in se ing that signature style that each individual brand should have,” he adds. "Decor of Sutra signifies two very important concepts of life -

With the populace gravitating towards upscaled, one-of-akind restaurants, Som Sengupta believes that the locally improvised restaurants and hospitality ideas are increasingly being adopted by consumers across the world. “There is an undercurrent of fatigue with cookie cu er multilocation formats. An emerging trend in the ta oo world is the white ink ta oo. heatre is a tough art. Here an actor toils for months to perfect a character, director gives his blood and sweat to give shape to his imagination and in the end, it all boils down to that final one and a half or two hours show, where you cannot afford to make any mistake as there is no retake, just you and the audience.

To keep the interest of audiences alive in stage plays, theatre directors keep experimenting with presentation, dialogues and other aspects of the art.

Young theatre director Atul Satya Kaushik, whose play Draupadi was selected as one of the best plays of the year 2013 by Sahitya Kala Parishad, Govt. of Delhi, shares, "Theatre keeps evolving always. NEW THEATRE TRENDS

Talking about the new age theatre, Atul adds, "There is a new wave of theatre where text or spoken words take back seat and presentation becomes the driver of the performance. Then there is a serious intrusion of videos/moving images in theatre and hardly a theatre play gets staged without a projector. There have been changes in the language also and a lot of shows are coming up with mixed languages, popularly known as Hinglish." Abstract theatre is also a dominant trend in theatre with more and more young groups enthusiastically taking the bold

step to try something new. Ace Indian director, actor, playwright and writer, Mahesh Da ani, adds, "There are more and more young groups who are doing some abstract stuff. I am not sure how powerful the result is but the fact that they are willing to explore is very encouraging." Mahesh is the first playwright in English to be awarded by the Sahitya Kala Academy. His plays have been directed by ace Indian theatre directors like Arvind Gaur, Alyque Padamsee and Lillete Dubey. The Prime Time Production just celebrated 500th performance of the famous play Dance Like a Man wri en by Mahesh Da ani.

"When I wrote Dance Like a Man in the late eighties, people were skeptical about using Bharatnatyam in a play that was in English. Oddly enough, I too didn't expect it to work but followed my heart and wrote and produced it. Today, that is considered a seminal work," Mahesh laughs.

CONTEMPORARY THEATRE

There is another form of theatre that has been around for ages but is evolving now, thanks to the effort of few brave hearts, who made the tough choice of taking up puppet theatre as a career over other lucrative options. "Contemporary puppetry is not very old in India. Maybe 60 years or so. There was a very strong movement in Ahmedabad under Meher Contractor and later a strong movement in Kolkata with puppeteers like Suresh Du a, Raghunath Goswami, Hiren Bha acharya and in Delhi in the last 30 years by Shri Dadi Pudumjee

In their a empt to make theatre popular among the masses, Subodh Maskara and his actress wife Nandita Das, decided to give a cinematic twist to it. "Cineplay is a new genre of cinema. It is inspired by stories and performances from the fascinating world of theatre. I had seen many recorded theatrical productions of very good quality, however, while capturing a live show the audience reactions are also captured, and to me that was distracting. So I decided to blend cinema and theatre to create a new genre called CinePlay," informs Subodh. In Cineplay, the film making process is used to convey meaningful stories, in collaboration with the theatre director’s vision. "I really believe that CinePlay will raise the profile of stories that are contained in theatre. We have already seen audiences wanting to see more theatre a er watching a CinePlay. Theatre has limited accessibility and we hope to break those constraints. We are waiting for the time when CinePlay will do to theatre what TV and satellite rights have done to cinema," hopes Nandita. Eid-ul-Fitr is a celebration of the culmination of the month-long period of fasting and austerity known as Ramzan or Ramadan. It is believed that the Holy Quran was revealed during the month of Ramzan, and in commemoration of that sacred revelation, Eid is celebrated on the day following the sighting of the new moon. Muslims devote the entire month of Ramzan offering prayers to the Almighty, by visiting mosques and reciting dua as many times as possible. The fasting is observed strictly and right from sunrise to sunset, food and water are not taken; even saliva is not swallowed! Eid-ul-Fitr is considered to be a

thanksgiving day among Muslims, all across the world. People wear new clothes, houses are decorated, friends and relatives visit each other to exchange greetings. The highlight of this festival is the

sweet milk-and-vermicelli pudding known as seviyan that are served to guests on the day, thereby also being referred to as meethi or sweet Eid. Children receive gi s from elders. BATTLE DE CURVE Curve TV sits on the pinnacle of groundbreaking innovations, but is it really worth the a¡ention? Find out. W O R D S | N ISH A NT NAY YA R

B

efore we got the product, we had two arguments doing the rounds in our heads - would one need to sit in a sweet spot directly in front of the TV’s display for the perfect view and how much of a curve do you really need on the TV? Let’s address the first concern - how would your si ing position affect your viewing range in front of this TV. And the much anticipating enthu-cutlets can breathe a sigh of relief. Both, the LG and Samsung TV’s curvature have been pointed in a manner that it lets you see

the full screen, primarily owing to the viewing angles of less than 35 degrees. What adds up to the surprise is the fact that from anywhere within the sub-35 degree viewing angle range - good enough for si ing 3 adults in - the curve enhances the viewing experience. The images do stand out with an increased depth, again thanks to the curve, leaving the viewer with a feeling of being enclosed inside the display. It’s the closest you can get to experience 3D without the hassle of donning those ugly, heavy 3D glasses.

VIEWING

Undoubtedly, both the TVs deliver exceptional picture quality, with bright colours and subtle contrasts that add up to the overall immersive viewing. One nuance that bothered us is the fact that bright objects opposite the screen tend to be double reflected or stretched across the screen. This is obviously because of the curved stature of the TV.

DESIGN

LG’s TV is a unison of a slim OLED panel atop a curved plastic base - making the TV very fragile. And

CURVE TV MAKES EVERY PIXEL EQUIDISTANT FROM YOUR EYES, DELIVERING A MORE SATISFYING PICTURE. BUT IF YOU SIT FAR ENOUGH, THE CURVE STARTS TO AFFECT THE IMAGE'S GEOMETRY

with no frame/bezel around the upper side of TV, this product becomes more prone to breakages/ cracks, etc. On the other hand, Samsung’s TV is nestled in metal bezel covering the OLED panel completely from all sides. This, definitely makes the edges and the panel less fragile, but also makes the TV appear bulkier and to some extent overshadows the curved dimensions. LG’s TV rests on a unibody stand, which bends like a curve in the middle of the stand to give a be er grip on the base, whereas Samsung rests on a metal stand. Another thing to point out is that LG has vested its external connection points at the rear side of the TV, saving on space and making the product less hassled to use. Samsung sports a similar external connection box, which doubles up as the brain of this TV, but nevertheless clu ers the area around the TV. Based purely on design aesthetics, LG’s TV looks sharper and a more lifestyle oriented product.

SOUND QUALITY

LG flaunts its clear speakers, that

and ultimately produce crisper and heavier sound quality.

REMOTE

LG flaunts a futuristic remote which has a trackball in the middle. This enables simple TV navigation, using point, scroll, gesture or voice commands. Samsung, on the other hand, lets you do the aforementioned activities with the ease of using a trackpad, enabling you to scroll through various options on the screen. deliver clear audio output, despite their miniature look. Samsung, on the other hand, over-delivers as they are known for producing TVs with unimpressive sound output. This time Samsung has equipped a duct system giving the speakers more room to breathe

FUTUE READY

In comparison to the LG's curved TV, Samsung is easier to control, work, surf and video-chat on. Samsung’s got the edge because of its live TV integration and content recommendation engine.

PRICE LG 55 inch: Rs. 9,99,000 (but you can expect a serious cut in the price soon, owing to the global discount that LG has rolled out; prices should soon be cut by half of the marked price) Samsung 65 inch: Rs. 4,49,000

OUR CUSTOMER COMMITMENT since SpiceJet started connecting smaller cities with no air service with our Q400 aircra . All of which we celebrate and bring to you with passion and commitment each and every day.

Dear Customer, This month we celebrate our newest aircra , a Boeing 737-800NG that we have named ‘Red Chilli’, fresh from the Boeing factory in Sea le. ‘Red Chilli’ is adorned with a special paint scheme that celebrates the pilots and cabin crew who together operate our 340 daily flights, taking care of your safety and comfort, delivering warmth and professionalism on behalf of all 5400 employees of SpiceJet with all their hearts. ‘Red Chilli’ has already become a spo ers’ favourite all over India, and I expect it will soon become the most wellknown and recognized aircra in the country. We had the actual crew pictured – two captains and four cabin crew – operate the first flight of the aircra in celebration! July is also the month we unveil our new SpiceFlex bundled add-ons product, where you get a number of benefits (for example free meals, priority check-in, preferred advance seat assignment for free, no-fee changes to bookings) for a lower

price than if you bought them separately. We are also in the process of introducing our new SpiceMAX seats, where the first 5 rows on our Boeing aircra have been reconfigured to provide significantly more legroom than standard seats on SpiceJet and other budget airlines. We have been gradually re-configuring our Boeing fleet, and those who have experienced the new legroom have been giving rave reviews. It will be well worth the modest premium we will be charging for these seats; details of the product and pricing will be announced in early July. We are also this month launching a new ad campaign to celebrate the nine years since 2005 that SpiceJet has been painting the Indian skies red, the nine years since SpiceJet started offering affordable fares to the Indian customer, the six years since SpiceJet became the first budget airline in India to offer hot meals on board, and the two years

MUSIC ON BOARD

SpiceJet flights play so rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... ABBA Eagle

152

Lyricist and keyboardist Bjorn Ulvaeus was trying to capture the sense of freedom that he got from reading the legendary book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, while writing this song in 1977. The overall feel of the track captures the laid-back California style made popular in the 1970s by, co-incidentally, The Eagles. RODNEY JONES Ain’t No Sunshine Rodney Jones is a jazz guitarist who has worked with Jaki Byard, Chico Hamilton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lena Horne. This is an instrumental version of the 1971 hit by Bill Withers, who incidentally was working on the assembly line of the Boeing 747 aircra when he wrote this song! THE EAGLES Witchy Woman

While the inspiration for the title and lyrics was based on various women, The Eagles had met, Don Henley had Zelda Fitzgerald particularly in mind when writing this song. The muse and sometimes genius behind her well-published author husband F. Sco Fitzgerald, Zelda was known as mesmerising. July 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

JOSE FELICIANO Rain Performed by José Feliciano, a Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist, singer and songwriter blind since birth, this 1969 song is included among his greatest. COMMODORES Nightshi "Nightshi " is a 1985 hit song by the post-Lionel Richie version of the Commodores and title track from the album of the same name. The song, wri en by the lead singer at that time, Walter Orange, was a tribute to soul/R&B singers Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, who both died in 1984. FLEETWOOD MAC Over My Head This 1975 so rock song allegedly refers to the composer Christine McVie’s troubled marriage to bassist John McVie, which would end in adivorce in 1976.

CHRIS ISAAK This 1986 song was a Can’t Do a Thing massive hit across the (To Stop me) world. Chris said that the song was inspired by the memory of when he first saw his wife Diane, and how men cannot even remember what their wives were wearing when they first met. Though it did not get as much air time as the huge hit “Wicked Game”, BEE GEES this 1993 song remains More Than A Woman This 1978 ballad from the a favourite among Chris Isaak fans. peak of the disco era by the Bee Gees, is from the soundtrack of the movie DAVE BRUBECK Take Five “Saturday Night Fever”, A jazz piece composed capturing the New York by Paul Desmond and City feel of the decade. performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their STEELY DAN 1959 album, Time Out. Wri en by Norman Whitfield and Barre Strong in 1966, and made famous by Marvin Gaye in a single released in October 1968. The lyrics tell the story in a first person narrative of the betrayal of the singer's romantic partner, how he heard about it indirectly via gossip from other people (through the "grapevine"), and the emotional pain and disbelief he is suffering. STEELY DAN Gaucho Steely Dan’s seventh album Gaucho, from 1980, has been referred to as "a concept album of seven interrelated tales about would-be hipsters”. The title song "Gaucho" was rumored to be intended as a tribute to jazz pianist Keith Jarre . STEELY DAN Do It Again This 1972 track was the breakout hit from Steely Dan’s first album. The lyrics are sung to a man who is addicted to nightlife and gambling. The narrator describes the realities of the man's addictions and the consequences of his actions, but emphasises that he goes 'back, Jack, do it again', implying that it is an addiction.

THE TOURE-RAICHEL COLLECTIVE Le Niger The Touré-Raichel Collective is led by Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli singer and pianist Idan Raichel. It has a familiar feel, somewhat evocative of Bengal’s mystic musical minstrels, the Baul, whose music had a great influence on Rabindranath Tagore. BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS One Love/People Get Ready It's a reggae/ rhythm and blues song by Bob Marley & The Wailers from their 1977 album Exodus. It was first recorded in a ska style by Marley's original group, The Wailers in 1965. The song also has a hopeful tone with regard to the future. This is the most iconic Louis Armstrong song. ny airline would be incomplete without its pilots and cabin crew, and SpiceJet’s Ground School forms the ‘backbone’ of the Cockpit Crew. It is here that we build a positive a itude in the flying crew and provide complete knowledge of all aircra equipment and standard operating procedures

to the pilot, so that accidents like Flying Tiger B747-249F in Kuala Lumpur in 1989 and Turkish B737800 in Amsterdam in 2009 do not take place. Although, the importance of a Ground School and its training do not come into the limelight, a pilot’s efficiency in controlling the aircra in various flying conditions

(including dealing with monsoon conditions) are taught by highly experienced and professional trainers of Ground School with the cabin crew practicing CRM Elements to maintain a pleasant and comfortable cabin environment such that the passengers always experience the ‘WOW’ factor and more.

SPICEJET GROUND SCHOOL HAS HIGHLY EDUCATED, SKILLED AND DGCA APPROVED TRAINERS WITH RICH EXPERIENCE IN AVIATION IN GROUND TRAINING. SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN FIXED BASE SIMULATOR TRAINERS July 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

CORE FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main function of Ground School is to train the cockpit crew, dispatchers and cabin crew (Joint CRM). Two highly qualified Bombardier, Canada trained instructors are dedicated to Dash8Q400 fleet and seven experienced ICAO / IATA trained/ Boeing manufacturer's base SeaŠle, USA trained instructors are dedicated to the B737-800/900 fleet. Besides this, Ground School has a team of highly professional and efficient aircra performance engineers under the Performance and Navigation section who carryout proper aircra performance analysis, route analysis, operational planning. They evaluate and optimise payload capacity, fuel efficiency and ultimately achieve reduction in carbon emission in accordance to latest regulatory requirements. The frequent changes in airfield conditions and visibility etc., require these experts to put in continuous and tireless effort to work out revised performance parameters required for safe flight operations. Flight crews are informed of these changes in advance before each flight. Another key section of the Ground School is Technical Library which not only maintains the updated record of the technical and performance information of the aircra as per the latest changes given by the aircra

manufacturer and regulations, but also considers the safety aspects by regularlyissuing various operational circulars and other documents to the cockpit crew. The inputs for these operationally important instructions are given by the performance engineers based on their analysis.

Ground School has highly skilled engineers and DGCA approved trainers In addition to in-house training, the Ground School has also achieved laurels by training pilots of non-scheduled operators (NSOPs) across the country to their satisfaction. In 2013, SpiceJet

Ground School trained more than 300 pilots from 60 NSOPs in India. TRAINING FACILITIES

SpiceJet Ground School has state of-the-art facilities to provide the most conducive and comfortable environment for learning. Some of the methods include classroom-based programmes, e-learning (computer based training), classroom and practical assessment and/or a blend of these programmes. The real challenge for these Ground School instructors, performance engineers and other section's staff is to make sure that in real-time the most accurate information is processed and provided to cockpit crew. The non-availability of one essential document on-board or wrong information given to the pilot can not only lead to a delay

or cancellation of a flight, but also endanger the safety of the aircra .

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Ground School has been proactive in ge ing SpiceJet’s approval for conducting GPS-based STAR(RNP1) and GPS based approaches (RNP APCH). This is a highly advanced and accurate technique leading to very high standards of safety and remains independent of ground based navigation aids. SpiceJet has also been granted approval by the DGCA for straight flight over the oceanic routes known as EDTO (Extended Diversion Time Operations) that saves time for passengers, fuel for the company and cuses less damage to environment.
