Letters from
SpiceJet customers Helpful staff
My wife and I were booked to return to Bangkok on your flight from Pune. I remembered the flight times incorrectly and arrived at the airport just 45 minutes before the flight was to depart. We missed the flight because the immigration people had already packed up and returned to town. From that point, your staff exceeded all expectations. Ms Namrata Deshpande got right on her personal cell phone and found the Bangkok bound flights out of India from that moment on. She and her colleague Sandhya Nair booked us a flight with another airline and also booked a taxi for us to the Mumbai airport. We were assisted in every conceivable way by SpiceJet. Our next trip to India will begin with a search on of the your website as our first choice will be to fly SpiceJet. David Hutchinson and Panutda Suwannanonda

She has drawn a wonderful depiction of SpiceJet logo along with Ms Trusha Panchbhaya. Thanks to the entire Surat team for this wonderful experience and care.

e believe that the ‘Network’ of an airline is the fundamental reason for its existence. Network is literally the starting point of the airline business since it is only once that the network design of an airline is finalised; rest of the planning and execution may begin after that. To be precise, 'Network is the strategy, and strategy is the Network'. An airline’s network is determined by the needs of its customers.
Accordingly, we strive to design a network which caters to the needs of all the internal and external stakeholders, and optimises the shareholders' returns As a part of the 'New SpiceJet', we have overhauled our network in Summer Schedule, starting
March 30. The focus of the new network design is You—our esteemed customer. We have tried to take care of your varying travel needs, be it for business or for leisure travel. The new schedule will operate more than 335 daily flights to 50 destinations, which includes 42 Indian cities and eight international destinations. better flight timings. The new frequencies and timings have been introduced after exhaustive analysis to maximise customer benefits as well as optimise operational efficiency. SpiceJet operates a young and modern fleet comprising of three types of aircraft:
Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737900, Bombardier Q400
While Boeing aircraft serve primarily the mainline sectors such as metros, our Bombardier aircraft allow us to fly to many smaller airports where it is not possible for every airline to reach. This also leads to an exponential connectivity bloom within the network. In fact, for every direct flight, we almost have two more connecting flight options for you. So, this way, it becomes possible for you to travel from Goa to Varanasi, Chennai to Udaipur, or from Delhi to Tuticorin. Fantastic options are available within our international network too, for example Dubai-Kathmandu, DubaiMale, Delhi-Male, and ChennaiKathmandu are some of the exciting choices. Whether for visiting family or friends, or for conducting business,
we provide a multitude of connecting flight options to you. We fly quite a few unique direct sectors such as ChennaiTuticorin, Bengaluru-Mysore, and even Mumbai-Amritsar. Even on the international front, we are leading in terms of exploring new markets such as Madurai-Dubai, and thus catering to the latent unserved demand. We are also working on expanding our international network, details of which will be finalised soon.
For every direct flight, we almost have two more connecting flight options for you We have 10 Boeing aircraft bases and three Q400 aircraft bases in our network. We have exited a few stations and markets in order to streamline our financial performance. Needless to say, these were tough calls, but this also allows us to focus on the depth in our network by making it denser rather than thinly spread out.
The new network now makes it possible for passengers to travel from Goa to Varanasi, Chennai to Udaipur, or Delhi to Tuticorin The new network gives many options to a passenger to choose from SpiceJet is also working on expanding its international network

For example, starting December 2013, we have entered into an interline partnership with Tiger Airways, a Singapore based airline. As a result, now you can travel to Singapore from various cities in India via Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. You can plan your travel by simply logging onto www.spicejet. com. share what goes on behind the scenes while devising a network. Once the broad network strategy is defined, it has to be translated into operationally efficient and feasible schedule. Some of the principles that we keep in mind while planning our network and schedule are as follows:
Strategic alignment
As a strategy of New SpiceJet, we would like to focus on the needs of both corporate and leisure travellers. Accordingly, we have provided double daily day-return product on most of our metro city

pairs for convenient choices to our business travellers. Similarly, leisure sector timings have been carefully chosen to align with the hotel check-in and check-out timings at holiday destinations. We have also strived to offer more options of flight frequencies on some of the key metro sectors.
Operational feasibility
Between the arrival of aircraft at the airport and its next departure, a whole host of activities have to be completed. This set of activities include disembarking, boarding, cleaning, fuelling and more.
Leg space: Boeing 737 has a total of 212 seats with ample of leg space to make your travel comfortable. Cove lighting with soft dimming and

Sufficient ground time has to be provided for these activities while at the same time trying to optimise the aircraft utilisation. We keep adequate buffers in our schedule to provide for any unforeseen exigencies which otherwise would result in delays. Crew rostering and maintenance timing requirements are also kept in mind and taken care of. In order to provide you, our customers, the best timings that suit you, we have to make great efforts to get the peak hour slots at most metro airports which are quite constrained due to the unprecedented civil aviation growth in the country.

Financial performance
As a business, a key goal is to provide desired financial returns to and for the shareholders of the airline. Hence, the network plan has been drafted carefully targeting the right sectors at appropriate timings in order for it to work for both the airline and our customers. The overall network plan also plays an important role in ensuring financial viability for the airline.

iles away from home, I was signing a declaration/acceptance form even as I could feel knots inside my tummy. No, there was no impending surgery nor any emergency; rather I was on a holiday and getting ready to jump into the Indian Ocean. The sight of the Kattumaran, a boat made by tying few wooden planks only worsened the feeling.
In local language Kattumaran means a small boat traditionally used for catching fish. “What! I sail into the sea on this, but the itinerary says a Catmaran ride,” I exclaimed. My life guard only smiled back to say – “It is safe ma'am”. So there I was alone in a

over me, leaving me completely drenched from head to toe - all sitting on the plank which they conveniently called 'Catamaran'. I wondered was there still a need to dive into the sea? However, as I kept going deeper and as the people on the beach started getting smaller and smaller, there was something about the sea that makes you fall in love with it. Going up and down along with the tide was therapeutic. There were other people too, who had come in more sophisticated boats; seeing them made me feel much better. So there I was floating with the waves even as the life guard kept a steady watch. I came back refreshed and in fact wanted to do it all over again, maybe next time I can go even further.
The hotel organises special snake catching expeditions Creepy friends
Back to the shore and my next activity awaited me. Guess what? This time it was snake catching. Caught between the sea and the snake, I decided to play along. The hotel organises special snake catching expeditions, again very popular among foreigners who make it a part of their itinerary.
Guests are taken on a trek to fields and woods nearby, where they go on cautious hunt for the snakes. The area here has a strong presence of poisonous snakes and so while guests enjoy this game of hunting, it also serves a purpose as they are taught how to catch snakes while keeping themselves safe and then they are also taught how to extract the venom from these snakes. In Chennai, the snakes are taken to the nearby Crocodile Bank (which has a separate snake section) where their venom are extracted which are later used for anti-venom medicines. The snakes are later released in their natural habitat. Visiting the crocodile bank is also a unique experience. With over 50 crocodiles in one enclosure, you just think you are in a different world. For the first day that was excitement enough for me and after a refreshing swim, I was ready for a sumptuous meal at Bay View

When you step inside you are informed that the prisoners were tied to a primitive machine to extract gallons of oil from the unending supply of coconuts. Visualise if you can, human beings tied where oxen normally are, pushing and pulling to do the extraction. And if failed to complete their quota for the day, they were likely to be tied to the post and flogged at the courtyard.
The Cellular Jail was comissioned in 1896 and was finally completed in 1906. It consisted of seven wings, fanning out in a circle and no two wings faced each other. Each wing had 100
cells and the prisoners were kept in isolation so that communication was minimal. It was built by the Indian prisoners themselves who were at that time imprisoned on Viper island.

How different is it playing under Gerardo Martino after Pep Guardiola. What was the kind of equation you shared with him after he openly said that you will be substituted frequently? I think all top coaches have their different styles – and Pep was fantastic to work with – he was very important in my development. All of the players have taken to Gerardo – and he has us playing some beautiful football. My aim is always to do what is best for the team – and if I am substituted I will trust the coach’s decision.

Indians have always been fans of Latin American football — we believe you got a first-hand look of this when you travelled to India. What was the experience like? I am thankful to all my fans, but the reception in India was overwhelming. I remember that the plane arrived in India very late at night and I didn’t expect there to be any fans waiting. When we got out of the airport though – there were so many Indian fans and they were wearing their Messi jerseys. It was a great experience. The Indian fans are very passionate, which I respect.

Flawless fable
Michelle Cohen Corasanti has created waves with her first book. She shares more on her story and her next book. W ords | F lorina soren
Tree until I was asked what the title meant, why does the almond tree remain mute and if silence is ever an answer to violence. That’s when I realized that I am the almond tree, a witness, and I wrote this book because silence should never be an answer to violence.

F
ew months since its launch, The Almond Tree has already been translated into three languages besides garnering accolade from all across. The Almond Tree is your first novel and on a very different/difficult subject. Why so? I didn’t become a writer because I wanted to tell stories. I became a writer because I had a story to tell. I had the misfortune of witnessing something I didn’t want to see that affected me to such a degree that despite all my efforts it clawed its way out in the form of a story.
Did you expect your first novel to be accepted so well? When I wrote this novel, my target audience were Jewish Americans and others in America who are not familiar with this narrative of the conflict. I never dreamt it would get translated into so many languages so quickly and reach so many people. I’m so grateful for its success. Why the name The Almond Tree? Did you consciously make that your narrator as the tree was witness to most of the incidents? Frankly, I couldn’t have told you why I chose the title The Almond
Why did you use the brothers (Ahmed and Abbas) to portray such different character and belief? Through the two brothers, I tried to capture the different ways in which Palestinians respond to Israeli oppression. The brothers, though very different in character, were virtually inseparable until an Israeli cripples Abbas, leaving him in chronic pain – and angry at the people who caused his disabilities. Abbas fills an important role in The Almond Tree providing a context for why some Palestinians choose a life of resistance, risking death, injury, torture and imprisonment. I have not written about abstract ideas in Palestinian families’ lives. They are facts of life that touch and have touched every family. Abbas is not a bad person. He’s a freedom fighter as opposed to Ahmed whose genius opened doors for him that were not available to Abbas. Ahmed
When I started to write The BOOK I was feeling both relief and desperation. Relief that I had this story inside me for over a decade, but I needed that time to digest what I had witnessed to be able to write in a way that could touch peoples’ hearts. April 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

Being a girl, how come you chose a boy as your protagonist? When I started writing, it was most natural for me to write as a Palestinian Muslim male. I think because I got the seed of the story from a Palestinian Muslim male I met at Harvard (my former husband) who was doing his post-doctorate jointly with a Nobel Prize recipient and his Israeli doctoral advisor and had many similarities with Ahmed. Apart from that I met many Palestinian postdoctoral candidates from Israel abroad, majority of them were males, who narrated the story in their own way and subconsciously helped me in forming the story. Why the protagonist was not a female, I think because in that area girls are not offered much choices and they lead a restricted life. Whereas males get ticket to freedom or chances to explore so unknowingly I chose a male protagonist.
chooses another path, partly out of a moral indebtedness to his father, and partly because he naturally possessed something that could act as a bridge between him and the world beyond his Palestinian village. Of the two brothers Abbas is much more dedicated to the cause of resistance and freeing his people. Ahmed is more concerned with his immediate family’s survival. None of them are bad and their relationship is crucial to the story. Do you like travelling? What were your recent holidays like? I love to travel. We went on an amazing adventure vacation to Jordan. We had a Bedouin guide and rode horses from little Petra to big Petra as well as donkeys. We went on a camel trek through the desert and slept in a Bedouin tent and experienced life as a Bedouin. I like to visit a place for an extended time so that I can experience life there. I have lived in France, Spain, Egypt, England and Israel. Paris is my favourite city so far, although I hope to travel to South Asia in the near future. Tell us little about your childhood and incidents that kept you awake? I came from a Jewish, Zionist family in

Upstate New York. I had never known suffering or oppression or anything that kept me up at night until I went to Israel. Out of everything that I witnessed during the seven years I was in Israel, I think Israel’s ‘break their bones’ policy has caused me to lose the most sleep. Tell us more about your other interests? I love reading, movies, travel, mountain climbing and mountain biking. When is your second book expected and on what subject? I’m finishing my second book right now. A Palestinian man who wanted to become my protagonist told me that he liked the relationship between Nora and Ahmed and wanted me to expand on that. When I started to write from Nora’s point of view, the story just flowed. I was going to write Nora and Ahmed’s story from Nora’s point of view, but I felt too constrained by The Almond Tree so although it started that way, a completely different story about star-crossed lovers emerged. In my new story, I am not the protagonist, but I pulled a lot from my personal story in writing her.

Mustard A Story
There is more to this 6,150-year-old spice than its tear jerking pungency. W ords | M adh u lika D ash

uch like the banana, mustard remains a hugely edible herb. Almost every part of this healing spice – the seed, the leaves and the flowers – can be used for both culinary and medical purposes. It is this versatility that makes mustard one of the oldest spices known to mankind. Researchers recently have found microscopic specks on fire-scorched pottery shards collected from three campsites in north central Europe that ranged between 5,800 and 6,150 years old. The use of mustard seeds, in fact, can be traced to different areas of Europe and Asia with
the white variety originating in the eastern Mediterranean regions; the brown from the foothills of the Himalayas, and the black from the Middle East.
Mustard also finds mention in the ancient Sanskrit writings dating 5,000 years back and in the New Testament where the kingdom of heaven is compared to a grain of mustard seed
It is said that while mustard seeds were first used for their culinary properties in ancient Greece, it was the Romans who invented a paste from the ground seeds by adding sweet must of old wine called mustum ardens. It has been described by the Egyptians around 2000 BC and also appeared in Chinese writings before 1000 BC, where physicians, including Hippocrates, used it to cure ailments. However, what is most exciting about mustard is its constant evolution. So much so that mustard is the second most-used spice in the United

Black mustard with the strong taste and the brown (or reddish-brown) with slightly less pungency is used in Indian/Asian cuisines, while the white ones are for sauces, marinades and pickles in Europe. Most markets carry mustard seeds in several forms, including whole, ground and powdered. Powdered mustard is a combination of brown and white seeds mixed with turmeric or saffron for added flavour and colour. The whole seeds lack aroma but as you crush and cook with them their punchy, nutty flavour is quickly released. Prepared with an acid component and salt, store-bought prepared mustard will not spoil. However, it will lose flavor and fire as it ages, even when unopened, and doubly so for flavoured mustards. Use unopened mustard within one year.
It’s hard to believe that the sauce that flavours the hot dog can flavour your health too. But it does.
Mustard stimulates the appetite by increasing salivation by up to eight times. It also has digestive, laxative, antiseptic, and circulative stimulant properties. Mustard also contains sulphur, which has been used in treatments of skin diseases.
Mustard is applied to the chest to aid in clearing the sinuses and decongest the lungs. Mustard seeds are excellent source of selenium, a trace element that is also believed to have an anticancer effect.
A little touch of mustard to your fish can boost the constituting omega-3 content. The selenium and magnesium content in it helps in providing relief from rheumatic arthritis.

Recharge Yourself Up your creativity by catching a power nap in the middle of a busy day. W ords | R ashi J indal

ver wondered why you feel so rejuvenated after an afternoon siesta, even if it is as short as 10 minutes? The reason is simple. A nap relaxes your senses and recharges you instantly. So what exactly are power naps? They are brief periods of sleep (see below for ideal length of time) that can be refreshing for the mind and the body.
They do not stretch through the entire sleep cycle but comprise a range of short sleep patterns which terminate just before deep slow-wave sleep (SWS) sets in

It is believed that onset of sleep itself is enough to initiate the memory processes, an effect that remains active even after termination of sleep. Scientists from Flinders University (Adelaide, Australia) found that a power nap of as little as 10 minutes in individuals whose sleep had been restricted to five hours per night, was tangibly beneficial. This apart, studies at NASA, the National Institutes of Mental Health in the US and at Harvard have proved that power naps can reverse the information overload that we feel in today's work environment, and improve discrimination and decision making. Scientists have proven that taking a 20-minute nap approximately eight hours after you have woken up will do more for your stamina than sleeping for another 20 minutes in the morning. The ideal duration of a power nap should be about 20 minutes; not more than 30 minutes Be Careful
‘The ideal duration of power nap should be about 20 minutes; definitely not more than 30 minutes,’ says Dr Satish Kaul. This serves as enough time for the body to rest. If strapped for time, a 6-10 minute nap too will help refresh. Experts say the ideal time to nap is generally between 1-4 pm. Napping later in the day could interfere with night sleep. ‘Also, at the end of the day, there is no substitute for normal and complete sleep cycle,’ says Dr Nidhi.
Make Some Time
Most people who may agree that power naps help refresh are unable to get down to it. Neeraj Mehta, fitness expert, and director of The GFFI Fitness Academy in Delhi offers some good advice: ‘Avoid
consuming too much sugar in the working hours before your nap as these foods make it harder to get sleep, since the caffeine in them blocks the connection of adenosine (the sleep chemical) to nerve cells. Instead, try to consume iron and calcium rich foods since they have a calming effect on the body and induce sleep. Also, you don’t even need your desk for a power nap. Try getting some quick shut-eye when you are on the move in a car, bus or train. Even closing your eyes for five minutes and lying in Shava Asana (in a relaxed state, letting the body lose) can release all your stress.’ For those, who still find it difficult to get sleep, try setting an alarm for 30 minutes initially (if you are among those who can’t fall asleep immediately) and reduce it to 20 minutes as you go along. Sipping herbal tea just before dozing off will also help since the caffeine in it will take some time to kick in, thus waking you up at the right time (However, avoid caffeine an hour prior to napping)

t's been a long week, and you're looking forward to happy hour. But a night out drinking can do serious damage to your diet, especially if you order cocktails made with high-calorie mixers. Still, happy hour doesn't have to be a diet downer. With a little planning, you can avoid a
diet disaster, and there are some alcoholic drinks that are relatively low in calories. We all know desserts are fattening. But when it comes to alcoholic drinks sometimes the calories don't register, even though a single chocolate martini has more calories than a McDonald's grilled chicken sandwich.
In fact, 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories, compared to 4 calories for a gram of carbohydrates or protein. A Mudslide has more than 800 calories

Syrups, sour mix, sugary fruit juices, and creamy additions turn drinks into desserts. Order drinks mixed with club soda, tonic water, cranberry juice, or a squeeze of citrus; or try distilled liquors on the rocks. You’ll save up to 800 calories. There are many simple tricks to make your drink lighter yet delicious. All you need to do is see you use the right ingredients. A lot of the calories and sugar that can be found in cocktails come from the mixers, not the alcohol itself, so swap out half the amount of mixer with seltzer water to still get the same flavour but with less sugar. The drink is a good source of vitamin B1 and B2 as well as vitamin C.

Some of the veggie-cocktails include - the 'Edamame and Shiso', made with vodka, edamame puree, muddled cucumber, shiso (an Asian herb) leaf, shaved ginger, a ‘wasabipink Himalayan salt rim,’ and the 'Margarita 20/20' consisting of carrot juice with blanco tequila, among other things.
Cucumber is a cooling fruit and has a natural, refreshing sweetness If you want to try a simple heathy cocktail at home then you could opt for a Spicy Vodka Soda, Mumbai Mango Mojito or Cooling Calcutta. Jaljeera powder used in Spicy Vodka Soda, is a spice blend that combines
cumin, ginger, black pepper, mint, black salt, some dried fruit powder (either mango or some citrus zest), and cayenne. The blend of spices that we suggest may make you sweat a little more, but you’re getting toxins out of your body as you put them in. Also, these spices are great for jumpstarting your metabolism. The salt in the Cooling Calcutta brings out the natural sugars of the blueberries and allows you to avoid refined or artificial sweeteners. Cucumber is a cooling fruit and has a natural, refreshing sweetness. Ahhhh. If possible, choose something that has yogurt or cream in it, because the fats and the proteins in yogurt slow down the absorption of the sugar in the drink. Another top tip for improving the health benefits of your cocktail is to eat something along with it and to drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration.

t’s time to step away from the tomboy fashion and dig some more into the ladylike vintage styles because this season we celebrate femininity through fabulous old fashion trends that are making a long-waited comeback. One of them being skirts.

It's that trend that dared to bare, and won. Sheer skirts remains a statement to make in Spring/ Summer 2014 as it still rules the runaways. The beauty of this trend is that it strikes a perfect balance between saucy and sophisticated, both covering and revealing at the same time. For those who do not know what this means - it is a long transparent skirt worn over a shorter solid skirt, shorts, or leggings. The sheer fabric offers a hint of romance and the fabric shows off the perfect amount of skin without being too revealing. It offers the demeanor of boudoir imagery. The skirt is perfect for showing off your legs. White sheer fabric offers the look of innocence. Black sheer fabric exemplifies a goth image. Pink and red sheer fabrics offer a hint of romance. A multicolour pattern can also be worn over solid black or white for some added flair.

Sheer skirts ruling the ramp
Sweeping silhouettes 92
Like the flowing maxi dress, the maxi skirt trend is here to stay this season. These long skirts can be worn in a variety of ways, but it's important to know the basics before jumping on this fashion trend. When paired with just the right top, shoes and accessories, this hippie-chic skirt can look not only incredibly stylish but also comfortable and casual. Most maxi skirt styles are full of volume, so it's important to balance out the silhouette by pairing the skirt with a tighter, closer-fitting top. This will give your look more structure and help highlight your waist beneath all of that maxi skirt fabric. Try tucking in a tank or tee, or adding
a cropped jacket or blazer. The beauty of a maxi skirt is that it can be dressed up or down, worn with flats or heels. For a more casual look, choose a pair of embellished gladiator sandals or flats. Add a few pieces of jewellery, such as bracelets and you’re ready for the day or evening!
corporate appeal
If you’re working 9 to 5 like most of us, you wake up every morning needing an outfit to go to the office. Pencil skirts are a work wardrobe classic and can also be very flattering. Balance out a fitted pencil skirt with a cardigan or blazer on top. Instead of black, try a warm fall color like mustard or wine.
Shape wear can be your best friend under a nicely fitted pencil skirt to create a smooth look. A printed scarf and a satchel-style bag completes the look that’s perfect for office. All stylists agree that the hottest trend this season is leather. The best way to wear this look in a sexy and polished way is by incorporating a curve-hugging, knee-length leather skirt, which can be worn at the office, for date night, or cocktail hour with your girl friends. To keep it office-friendly, make sure to also wear a silk blouse, cardigan, or blazer. Maxi skirts, mid-length skirts and high-to-low hemlines are my go-to summer skirts. So pick your favourite and make a statement this season.

your balance and body position. You won't be fighting gravity, so it will feel different at first. Keep your weight evenly distributed, and keep your heels on the floor of the pool. The benefits of pool workouts are numerous. The average 30 minute pool workout burns approximately 300 calories. It takes the elimination of 3500 calories to burn off a pound of body fat. A minimum three to four times per week pool workout is recommended, so a mere three to four weeks will result in measurable weight loss. Pool workouts are a great way to build up cardio endurance. When in cooler water, the blood moves through the body at a faster rate to warm it up. When coupled with an aerobic program the result is an improved cardiovascular performance over time. When strength training, the muscles require rest time in order to repair themselves. If lifting weights on off days, those that exercise are urged to use other muscles or simply take the day off. Due to the buoyancy of water, and the lack of impact that joints and muscles receive, many exercisers are encouraged to perform pool workouts on off days. Pool workouts are the alternative to losing out on a day’s worth of exercise time, as they allow for active recovery. Not
only can fat burning continue, but the active training can also help build muscles quicker, while continued conditioning occurs.
Pool workouts are the alternative to losing out on a day’s worth of exercise time Better than the best
Unlike many exercises, the pool provides a “soft” environment for workouts. Not only do you not have to worry about falling (as the water supports the body in every position), but the water also helps alleviate the feelings of fatigue because it’s supporting so much of the body’s weight. In addition, flexibility results due to a wider range of motions the body can achieve due to the absence

of gravity acting on the joints. Like any regular exercise, pool workouts are great stress relievers. The exercise stimulates the brain to release chemicals that make the body feel good. When performing pool exercises in warmer water temperatures, the movement of water against and over the body results in both massage and relaxation. This calming effect can decrease, or eliminate the pain resulting from a workout. If you’re a strong swimmer then even in the deep end your workout does not require any additional equipments. Due to the resistance of water, pool workouts in just waist or chest high water are quite effective for weight loss, cardio and strength training. If accessible, give pool workouts a try to begin an exercise program, or enhance an existing program. Water has great properties which work well for workouts. Water provides 12 to 15 times more resistance than air. So you can burn as many as 3 times more calories than if you walked at a moderate pace—and it's more refreshing! You don't even have to swim to get these results. So what are you waiting for, the pool should be your favourite place this summer.
Keep in mind
Lighting of the pool and the entire surrounding area needs to be properly planned and considered. Also, your pool builder should know the ‘fluid dynamics’ to ensure that the pool water is clear all the time, negating the need to change the water and empty the pool. Maintaining pool water’s pH balance makes sure swimmers do not have any rashes or skin problems and infections.” The author is the Director of RDX Gym and Spas

Damsels 'not' in distress
The women in the industry are no less of entrepreneurs. Shilpa Shetty Kundra has stakes in IPL, has opened spas across the country besides her fitness DVD and TV shows. Another beauty queen turned actress- Lara Dutta is setting up a designer shoe line besides her fitness DVD that was released early last year and was a smashing hit. Bipasha Basu also almost followed suit after a host of actresses launched their fitness DVDs,
Jacqueline Fernandes has bought an island in her country of origin she came up with hers recently. Sushmita Sen owns a jewellery house in Dubai besides the Miss Universe India franchise, alongside producing a film or two. The pretty damsel, Preity Zinta bought an IPL team with her ex beau and is all set to release her film this year. Stepping into the producer’s shoes was also Dia Mirza whose movie, though did not taste box office success. Another beauty queen turned actress Priyanka
Stars behind the camera
Chopra still has a roaring career to bank on, however she came up recently with her music video which she shot in LA, besides medical/ cosmetic clinics which her mother looks after (her mother is a doctor by profession). Newbie actress Jacqueline Fernandes has bought an island in her country of origin which she is touted to open soon to tourists, with resort facilities. Fairly a newbie, actress Anushka Sharma too joined the bandwagon of producers, and perhaps is the youngest to produce the movie NH10. Socialite- cumactress, Poonam Dhillon has a vanity van service which she has been successfully handling for over a decade now. Given the tough competition and business ventures, our Bollywood actors are certainly turning out to be business savvy entrepreneurs or, may we say, risk takers.

generation ago who could have imagined that parents of the future would have to force (tempt/plead) children to go out and play? That the fear of school ‘health and safety’ rules would deter children from climbing trees and bars? That the possibility of being unplugged from all ‘screens’ even for a day would be unthinkable?
Our children spend almost 90 per cent of their time indoors, 50 hours a week tied to some electronic gadget and getting less than 30 minutes of fitness training a day. They have become out of shape, attention deficient, stressed out and are spaced out “Ten year olds today, are physically weaker than those ten years ago,” confirms a recent study published in the child health journal Acta Paediatrica. Using this blessing she is able to fill the graph. She is known to have created a huge difference in the lives of many. Her findings show that nearly 70% people in this world are born with number 4 & 8 and it is now understood that these numbers can give you a lot of sorrows, disappointments, hurdle, postponements, and make your life imbalanced as compared to other numbers. She is followed and revered not only for her tremendous talent but the aura that she has around her and is ever so ready to spread it amongst others. Her seekers range from hardworking commoners to the royal families. She has been able to help people from all walks of life from business to media and entertainment. “I don’t ask you to change your life. I ask you to live it with all that you want.” According to her research, numerology is fully linked with business and career. As per your d-o-b, your ruling and destiny number, your missing number (in d-o-b) and your career line play a role in your business and career. How to calculate your d-o-b for e.g. 13-3-1982 (ruling no is 4 and 4+3+2=9 controlling no is 9 ) both the ruling and controlling is connected with planet and energy. Most of the time your ruling number and controlling number do not agree with each other, and also some numbers are missing in your numeric chart. This creates a lot of problem and imbalance in your life concerning finance, success, Health etc. Eg : Your d-o-b is 13-3-1982. In this you are missing 4, 9, 7, 6 that creates Imbalance and obstructing you from availing the full power of these numbers. This numeric graph and its findings are wholly researched and developed by Sandhiya Mehta Due to Your past birth karma this Birth Graph

Your birth graph is created on the basis of your past birth karma •Your Character / Yourself missing ultimate power •Your Field / Career Creating instability in career •How much you get? Low returns on hard-work According to this, imbalance exists, disabling you from attaining the full power of these numbers despite the fact that you are hardworking and intelligent. Sandhiya Mehta recognizes the problems first and then balances the charts using the power that has been bestowed upon her and the findings of her research. This helps to create balance in one’s life and optimizes the person to his/her full potential, allowing the person to reap the benefits they deserve.
IMP-only stone, name spelling, mantra, or fasting cannot change your destiny; you have to follow the scientific and proven method to lead a successful and content life. Your missing number that is connected with planet and energy, instead of giving you a raise, tends to pull you back and all your efforts and knowledge can go in a vain. She says, on studying the DOB, a particular year can be found that is crucial in deciding about your career change, promotion, new ventures, alone or in partnership. Further, your name and the name of your organization is very important to generate
good energy. As per my experience and calculation no. 4and 8 and 8 usually make the best partners in marriage life, as they understand each other very well, particularly in life’s ups and downs, No. 2 and 2 again experience a disturbed marriage life, either they go for breakage or have each other free to live and adjust well with each other when no. 3 or 9 or 1, 2 appear. Numerology calculation proves to be a good guide in helping two individuals to understand each other in a better way and each other’s approach towards life and abilities, like and dislikes. If the compatibility is not understood and optimized, the couple may not be able to stay completely happy with each other.
Q) How successful have you been with the numerological advice and remedies that you give? Ans: An overwhelming number of people from my clientele list have found the success they were looking for and more. The rest is dependent on the universal energy, but no one ever has been disappointed. It’s only gains, no loss. All kinds of people coming from all walks of life, be it a know- politician or a doctor, have come in and found a better way of life. Q) People belonging to what age bracket can use your knowledge and remedies ? Ans: People of all age, infant to adult. I personally think the remedy is the best given to a child as it helps them to select and stay on a right career path from the very start and boosts confidence. Q) How long does it take for the remedies to start showing results ? Ans: ideally the effects are begin to take place within a few days and then continue for the entire life span. The universe is always listening to you. There is nothing wrong to know about yourself in a scientific way, as this is has no connection to any myths and blind faith or religion. Open your mind to universal energy. Your success is one call away.

sit-ups and have lesser arm strength and looser grips. Coupled with older established findings like— children are becoming more unfit, less active and often heavier than before, these are serious causes of concern. Our modern, fast-paced, gadget driven lifestyles with their structured activities and virtual communications have changed the way our children ‘play’. It’s time to unlearn and relearn. It’s time to unplug and move out!
Here are 8 reasons why it’s time to shift childhood outdoors 1. A Natural Affinity
A hypothesis called ‘biophillia’ literally meaning love of life; suggests that we all have a biological need to be in nature since we are all products of its evolution, and that when we are away or cut off from nature, it hampers our wellbeing. That is why a walk in nature refreshes us and lifts our spirits versus a walk on the treadmill in a gym.
Children have even more of a natural preference for the outdoors. They are innately driven to be curious about the outside world and have a desire to explore.
2. Mental health cognitive development There are studies being conducted every day that underpin the relationship between playing

in natural settings and mental health. Playing outdoors strikes a balance between body and mind. A disconnect with nature, increased obsession with electronic devices and a hurried lifestyle are the main causes that lead to affecting the mental health of today's kids.
3. Sensory development
Being outdoors in the open offers
catching, skipping rope, playing tag, riding a bicycle or just even strolling teaches them how to use their large muscles and develops gross motor skills. Swinging, playing with sand, arranging stones, etc. promote the development of their fine motor skills.

Swimming, balancing on a plank, climbing trees, throwing and catching, skipping rope, playing tag, riding a bicycle or even just strolling teaches them how to use their large muscles and develop gross motor skills. with its varied physical structures and diverse sensory stimulations, improved perceptual abilities among children like the sense of smell, touch etc. Listening to birds, feeling the sand, smelling the flowers are all experiences that enrich all the senses in comparison to when the children are in front of TV or computer which primarily stimulate only the visual sense.
Muscle strength in hands and fingers and coordination of the eyes and hands is boosted when playing with sand, arranging stones, thus promoting the development of their fine motor skills.
Outdoor play offers opportunities for developing social skills and building community interactions. In an unstructured environment children easily make friends and establish relationships without even being aware that they are socialising. Fitness training outdoors also boosts body confidence and thus self esteem. Outdoor play equals happier children and they behave like less stressful souls.

4. Social and emotional development
5. chase the blues away with the greens
Yes, our children have high levels of stress. Depression, anxiety, migraines, and their prescriptions – tranquilizers, antidepressants, sleeping pills etc are all becoming more and more common with pediatrics. Loss of free time, a rushed lifestyle and a disconnect with nature are the main causes. Studies have shown stress levels in children fall within minutes of seeing green spaces. New researches have shown that playing in natural environments can help children better manage stress, improve attention spans and enhance learning. ‘Green outdoor space lessens brain fatigue’ confirm scientists using data from mobile electroencephalography (EEG). Running outside, breathing in fresh air helps children to release stress, burn steam while exploring ideas and emotions. It develops a sense of wonder and their relationship with the world establishes a strong self esteem.

vision and lowers the chances of nearsightedness. Cambridge University scientists worked on a study and their findings suggested that every hour that is spent outdoors each week can reduce a child’s chance of becoming shortsighted by two per cent. So, if you want your kids to be sober in their temper, move them out. A good idea to push your kids to rush outdoors so that they can get some fresh air.
Basking in the sun even for 10 to 15 minutes a day, boosts our ‘sunshine vitamin’ levels. Playing outdoors is pivotal in establishing a connection between children and nature. It builds their conceptions and values. They establish their attitudes to the environment and will influence the way they protect it in the future. A love for nature and a sense of harmony towards it goes a long way. It’s time then to move outdoors, to shift our online children; offline and outside. Whether it’s cycling, running, doing Yoga, running with your pet or even just climbing trees or skipping rope, playing in the natural environment not only builds active, healthy bodies but also benefits our intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual well-being. Outdoor fitness training is important for our holistic development and contributes to our fitness, mental alertness and general wellbeing.

hy are you coming back so late from school?” asks a worried Saroja. Her daughter Malar replies, “I saw Ramu on the way. He offered to take me to see something interesting...” “Did you go with him?” asks Saroja in a tremulous voice. Saroja and Malar are puppets. As the story unfolds, Saroja talks subtly about child abuse, good touch, bad touch and how to safeguard oneself.
“It’s easier to reach out to people and talk about sensitive issues through puppets,” says R Bhanumathi, founder of Pavai, a charitable trust dedicated to using puppets for communication Positive agenda
Pavai Centre for Puppetry was established in 2005 (pavai in Tamil meaning puppet). But Bhanumathi’s foray began when she modified the toys she had made into puppets for a relative’s play school. She
used puppetry during her job as environmental educator in an NGO. Her doctoral thesis on the status of shadow puppeteers followed. During her research, she realised that traditional puppeteers were no longer interested in the art form

since it was losing its entertainment status to new forms of recreation. The artistes performed a story from the epics and their role ended there. She decided her role should start where theirs ended. She chose to propagate puppetry as a tool for communication. Bhanumathi decided to conduct talk shows and training programs

122
The initial inhibitions vanished when a child was given a puppet rather than performing. Since then Pavai has been conducting awareness programmes on health, hygiene, literacy, AIDS, Child Sexual Abuse (CSA), nutrition and environment among students and corporate companies. In Pavai’s training programs, participants learn to make puppets, modulate and throw their voice, and manipulate the puppets.
Means to an end
In 2006, Pavai got two grants to promote puppet making as an alternative livelihood option
for women affected by tsunami. Women from three fishing hamlets learnt to make puppets from jute, while the supply of material and marketing were taken care of by Pavai. Pavai conducted a programme for a group of pre-teens with communication problems. The initial inhibitions vanished when each child was given a puppet. Bhanumathi asked each child a question, who had to answer through puppet. Since what emerged as the puppets’ voices were actually the children’s voices, Bhanumathi could draw them out and understand their concerns. The session had been so therapeutic that parents noticed their children becoming more communicative. A mother who attended Pavai’s
workshop told her seven-year-old dyslexic son stories using puppets. When he started handling the puppets, she learnt that he was being subjected to discrimination and corporal punishment at school. This made her stand up and fight for him. Bhanumathi often has to improvise on the spot as situation demands. Talking about sanitation issues are still taboo. As a CSR initiative, a company organized a programme for students in a rural area. An introductory talk by a puppet revealed that most of the students had poor hygiene practices. Bhanumathi made up a story and two of her puppets explained about sanitation, health and hygiene, paving way for further action.
Vision Bhanumathi opines that the art form needs public patronage so that traditional artistes do not switch to other professions. Puppetry has vast potential as a tool in various ways. Her vision is to reach out to more people through Pavai and bring them happiness.

Baisakhi Festival
Baisakhi is celebrated as the New Year's Day in Punjab. It was on this day in 1699 that the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa Panth. Baisakhi holds significance for the farmers as it marks the time for harvest of the rabi crop, and on this day farmers express their gratitude to God for a good yield. Typically, Baisakhi is
celebrated every year on April 13 with the festival date falling on April 14 once every 36 years. Legend also has it that on this day, Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya, which is why the day holds significance for Buddhists too. Baisakhi is celebrated with fervour and exuberance when people celebrate by dancing the giddha and bhangra. On this auspicious
day, traditionally, the Sikhs visit the Gurudwara and pay their respects. Religious discourses and kirtans are held at Gurudwaras, and karah prasad is distributed. Langar or community lunch is also held at Gurudwaras on this day. When: April 14 Where: Punjab

Chithirai festival The two-week long Chithirai festival is one of the biggest celebrations in Madurai. The festival begins on the fifth day of the bright half of the Tamil month Chithirai. On the full moon day, the images of gods and goddesses from the temples in and around Madurai are taken to the bed of the river Vaigai, in colourful processions accompanied by hundreds and thousands of people and musicians. The atmosphere is one of mirth and merriment. The festival marks the marriage of Madurai's powerful presiding deity, Meenakshi with

However, he arrived late and missed the wedding. Furious, he got into the river, and proceeded back home. One of the biggest spectacles of the Chithirai Festival is this procession. This year, Karnataka tourism will showcase the Historic City of Bidar at ITB Berlin. This increases the chances of attracting more and mbore people to the state.
Achieving dreams
V
antage Hall, with its beautiful campus and modern facilities, is nestled between green woods and lofty hills of Dehradun and we are ready to welcome its new occupants, young girls with dreams and aspirations of their own. The school acknowledges that parents are the primary educators, but here at Vantage Hall a professional body of teachers will work in coordination with home and students to help each girl to realize her potential. A variety of forms of Art, Music, Dance and Sports will develop in each student her latent desire for excellence in her chosen field. The Boarding House is a special place where they have created a home away from home with space for each student in a secure and caring environment. Attractively done up areas and rooms, where each student has her semi-personal and personal space and is cared for and nurtured under an experienced House Mistress and a Matron. We believe that a boarding house is not just about shelter and convenience, but an opportunity to develop confidence, self-belief and team spirit.

turning a new leaf
Dear Customer, This month is when one of the single biggest building blocks of the New SpiceJet—a completely new network and schedule—has come into being. The result of a complete clean-sheet of paper review of the old network, the new network offers better timings, frequencies, and connectivity to more passengers than ever before, while at the same time improving the operational efficiency of the airline.
Along with the new network, we are launching a new advertising and marketing campaign with the tagline “With All Our Heart”. This phrase captures all of the passion, commitment, energy, and warmth that characterises the New SpiceJet. We are an airline that cares. An airline that is giving it its all to transform itself to become India’s favourite airline. An airline whose people go the extra mile to take care of its customers, and to make things right if they go wrong. With the warmest, friendliest, most caring staff. With “Hot Meals and Warm Smiles”, we want to provide you with the best, warmest, most caring airline experience on the ground and in the Indian skies. This commitment shows in everything we do, in every interaction. This commitment is what made us the #1 ontime airline as per official DGCA figures for February 2014 (the latest month for which data is available at the time of writing). This commitment is what is resulting in us getting many more positive than negative emails and feedback from our customers, as they notice and benefit from the changes. And tweets such as “@flyspicejet Surely impressed by your punctuality. You folks surprise me every single time. Great work #spicejet. Keep it up.” And “My last 10 flights have been with @ flyspicejet, all on or before time. very impressed!”.
There are more changes to come. Starting next month, we will be launching the best onboard meal service in the skies in partnership with Taj-SATs and Café Coffee Day, improving on what is already the best in-flight meal service in the Indian skies today. Since January, customers have been able to pre-book their meals online from an expanded pictorial web menu at discounted rates, and ensure the meals of their choice are loaded on board. We recommend all customers to use our web-site to book their meals at any time upto 24 hours before departure. This facility is available both at the time of booking, and after booking under “Manage My Booking”, and works for bookings made through any channel or travel agent. In closing, I want to also urge all of you to check out our add-ons such as the “Empty Seat Option” and the “Preferred Flight Option” on our web-site after you make your booking, to further enhance your journey. Please also check out our online check-in facility to beat the queues, and to pick the seat of your choice. music on board
SpiceJet flights play soft rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... Eagles Witchy Woman
170
This was the first song that Don Henley wrote for Eagles with guitarist Bernie Leadon. "She drove herself to madness with the silver spoon" in the song is a reference to Zelda Fitzgerald's special slotted silver spoon used to dissolve sugar cubes with Absinthe. Foreigner I Have Waited So Long “I have waited oh so long, please don't tell me baby I was wrong”. Composed by Mick Jones, a simple lilting ballad from “Hot Blooded” that every teenager in the 1980s could identify with, became a big hit. Peter Malick Group with Norah Jones Heart of Mine “Don’t let her know that you love her, don’t be a fool.” A Bob Dylan composition from his album Shot of Love, and re-recorded by The Peter Malick Group in 2000 featuring Norah Jones. SpiceJet CEO Sanjiv Kapoor notes, “I first heard this track playing on the radio in my W Hotel room overlooking San Francisco Bay one evening in 2005, and was immediately drawn to it and hooked… Norah Jones at her raw finest, a must for any fan!”.
April 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Dr Hook When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman “When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you watch your friends”… A truer phrase seldom uttered! Riding the disco wave in 1979 it became an international hit. Fleetwood Mac Over My Head This gentle soft rock song was released as the lead single from the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac. It was the band's first song ever to achieve 'hit' status in the US. Steely Dan Do It Again The first single by this American jazz/rock band, the song reached No. 6 on the Billboard chart. The band was known for nicely blending the elements of jazz, rock, funk, and pop. Eagles One of These Nights This title track written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey transformed them into international superstars. According to Frey, the song is about putting things off. "We've all said, 'One of these nights I'm gonna do something - get that girl... find that house.' Bee gees For Whom The Bell Tolls This lesser-known but still catchy Bee Gees track is from their 1993 album, “Size Isn’t
Everything”. With its plaintive lost love lyrics, this track is a pleasant reminder of the amazing vocal harmonizing power of the Brothers Gibb. Ray Charles and Norah Jones Here we Go Again Ray Charles' 1967 hit was re-recorded as a duet in 2004 with Norah Jones as part of Charles' Grammy Award for Album of the Year winning Genius Loves Company. It proved to be the most popular and critically acclaimed song on the album. Eagles I Can’t Tell You Why This song from “The Long Run” was the first to feature Timothy B. Schmit on lead vocals. Live versions of the song were released in the 1980 album Eagles Live and 1994's Hell Freezes Over. Bruce Springsteen My Hometown This 1984 song begins with a nostalgic invocation of the singer’s childhood, but then goes on to describe the racial violence & economic depression. Franki Valli My Eyes Adored You This popular song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan was originally recorded by Franki Valli and The Four Seasons in early 1974, but was released only with Fanki Valli’s name on it.
With teenage angst lyrics like “My eyes adored you, Though I never laid a hand on you, My eyes adored you...”, this was Valli's first No. 1 hit as a solo artist. Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry Slave To Love One of Roxy Music lead singer Bryan Ferry's most popular hits, this seductive 1985 song has been used in various cinematic works, most popularly in the erotic drama 9½ Weeks (1986). Percy Sledge When A Man Loves a Woman Written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, this plaintive song was recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966. With lyrics like “If she is bad, he can't see it, she can do no wrong,” it talks to the throes of blind infatuation. Chris Isaak Wicked Game This 1989 number became a raging hit when it featured in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart (1990). Its popular b/w video featuring top model Helena Christensen frolicking on the beach with Isaak was also ranked #4 on VH1's 50 Sexiest Video Moments. Eric Clapton Wonderful Tonight Clapton wrote
"Wonderful Tonight" for his wife Patty Boyd while waiting for her to get ready to attend Paul and Linda McCartney's annual Buddy Holly party. Boyd would later say: 'Wonderful Tonight' was the most poignant reminder of all that was good in our relationship." Gary Wright Dream Weaver This 1976 track was inspired by Autobiography of a Yogi, which was given to Wright by George Harrison. Paramhansa Yogananda's poem "God! God! God!" refers to "the idea of the mind weaving dreams." (The Cars) Drive Written by Ric Ocasek and sung by Benjamin Orr, this was their greatest international hit. It was used at the 1985 Live Aid concert as the background music to a montage. Gregory Abbott Shake you Down This 1986 song by became a big hit and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It was a hit across the Atlantic Ocean, as well, peaking at number six in the UK Singles Chart. Interestingly, Abbott has taught English at the University of California, Berkeley.
