FROM THE COO’S DESK

With the fantastic all-women crew of SG254, Women’s Day

Dear SpiceJet customer, In this month’s issue, we highlight some of the exciting destinations we fly to. Hot on the heels of the ‘Let’s Go Abroad’ sale that we held in March, we bring you closer to some of the most popular destinations served by SpiceJet that include four of my favourite destinations: Bangkok, Colombo, Dubai, and Malé (Maldives), and everyone’s perennial domestic favourite, Goa. Getting to these destinations has never been easier or more affordable than it is these days. People travel from many continents to visit these places but for us they are in our backyard. So what are we waiting for? Go ahead and book your next vacation or quick getaway to one of these places on www. spicejet.com! And you will be flying on one of the Top 2 on-time airlines in India, as per the latest Scan this code on your DGCA on-time performance smartphone and watch statistics. Yes, SpiceJet has once our stunning holi video again reclaimed its spot as one shot at the airport of the most punctual airlines in

India, another solid step towards completing a transformational turnaround. Last month was a colourful and eventful one for SpiceJet. We again surprised and delighted air travellers by staging an energetic, professionally choreographed ‘flash mob’ at Delhi Airport’s departure lounge on the eve of Holi, an event that was well appreciated by the hundreds of passengers who were lucky enough to be there to witness it. You can watch the video by scanning the QR code on this page. It was fantastic, do not miss it! Why do we do these activities? We do it because we believe travelling does not have to be mundane, robotic or boring. It can be fun and colourful, and festivals are meant to be celebrated with passion. After all our name is SpiceJet, we are the un-boring airline, and everything we do, we do With All Our Heart! On Holi itself, we flew a group of 25 underprivileged

kids from Delhi to Goa for a day of fun and frolic on the beach. These children were from the Navjyoti India and India Visions foundations, and flying them was an inspiration. I was on the flight myself and was amazed to learn that the older kids in these foundations (11-12 years old) teach about 15-20 street kids in a structured manner, passing on their learnings to those even less fortunate. This was truly inspirational and it was an honour to be able to give these wonderful kids this treat, which we do periodically under our ‘Giving Wings to Dreams’ social outreach programme. Two days after Holi was Women’s Day. At SpiceJet, women play an important role across many functions, and also head some of our major departments such as Sales and Medical. We also have possibly the highest percentage of women pilots in the world – around 15% of our pilots are women. To celebrate Women’s Day, we operated 16 flights staffed by all-women crew (pilots and cabin crew). But as I like to say, allwomen flights are not something we just do for Women’s Day – we operate such flights routinely many times a month. In that sense, every day is Women’s Day at SpiceJet! Photos and articles covering the above mentioned activities have been featured in this issue. Happy Reading! Thank you for flying SpiceJet, I wish you a wonderful flight.

Machan No-3 is an amazing structure. Situated about 300 yards inside a dense patch of forest from Thandi Sadak, it has a small waterhole right in front. It’s here that many of my wildlife-loving friends have had memorable experiences with tigers and elephants. For one, given the secluded corner where this watchtower is located, the wildlife here appears truly at ease (provided, you do not disturb it with unnecessary sound and movement).

I recently spent two nights at Gairal FRH, the old Forest Rest House, and the experience was simply exhilarating. Instead of putting up at Dhikala — the first choice of most first-timers — I always opt for the secluded FRH situated in the lap of the Ramganga river deep inside the forest. A one-of-its-kind location, Gairal is where true wilderness strikes you and nature is at its starkest best. On both my mornings during my visit, I was woken up by the alarm calls of a chital from across the Ramganga, even before the last ray of sun popped up from behind the Forest Range. Corbett National Park can be appreciated and enjoyed in a number of ways, and one must not restrict himself or herself to a set schedule. The diversity of flora and fauna mandates that one should try various approaches to savour the experience.

CONCERN

POTPOURRI

Gairal is where true wilderness strikes you and nature is at its starkest best As like many others, Dhikala grassland and Thandi Sadak are one of my favourite zones inside the park. Sandwiched between the Ramganga reservoir and a long stretch of thick forest, the strategically located Dhikala grassland, or chaur as it is popularly called, is the place where most of the ‘action’ takes place. In summers, I have spotted as many as 200 elephants in the grassland. This is also the place to try your luck with a tiger — though at times, sightings can become rare without any apparent reason. But that is the beauty of Corbett. There is so much of unexpectedness at every turn of the jungle road that most of my visits to Corbett contain at least one unique feature — something which I had never experienced before! On my recent visit, I came across this unusual scene: a large crocodile and two Ganges gharials sunbathing near the Crocodile Point where the gharials suddenly became victims of monkeys. They disturbed the large reptiles so much so that after enduring the torture for 30 minutes, the poor fellows opted to slip into the river. They returned only after the group of teasing monkeys had left the site. In recent years, you are not allowed to take your car inside Corbett and it is compulsory to hire an open Gypsy to travel the length and breadth of the Park. Elephant rides in the morning and afternoon (available at Dhikala and Bijrani zones) can pay rich dividends. If you wish to get really close to the real residents of the Park, just get atop an

elephant — because an elephant can go where a Gypsy cannot. And then there is another way to enjoy the place, though not favoured by many, either because of ignorance or impatience. This entails quietly sitting on a watchtower for a few hours. Corbett offers a number of watchtowers. Some have become quite popular among the chattering crowds, like the one at the edge of Thandi Sadak and the other, the metal one, on Sambhar Road. Unfortunately, most of the time there is too much commotion on these towers, defeating the very purpose of letting wild creatures come near you by remaining silent and unobtrusive.

There are a number of watchtowers here, and Machan No-3 is my favourite My favourite, however, is Machan No-3. It can only be approached on foot and if you just make a polite request to the Range Officer at Dhikala, I am sure he would depute a gunman to take you to this watchtower. Agreed, the wait on a watchtower can be long and agonising, at times not even fruitful but it carries the chance of that once-in-a-lifetime experience that may not be possible anywhere else. In a gambler’s parlance, place

India’s health budget was increased by 27 per cent for FY 2014-15 to `35,163 crore (`351.63 billion). The focus is on improving affordable healthcare for all. Additionally, the government is also professing other fields of medicine like Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. The focus on health research is quite high on its agenda. There is a desire to establish a sound network of hospitals and medical facilities to address health in general. Dr Anoop Misra, the Chairman of Fortis-C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, says, “Our doctors are clinically well-trained, skilled in medical and surgical management, and have the best technology available to them.” In his opinion, India has lots of positive points making it a sought-after destination for medical treatments. They were the first to introduce a special incubator called Embryoscope in Karnataka which has helped increase the pregnancy rates tremendously. Gunasheela Hospital was voted as one of the top 10 fertility Centres in the country in December 2012, by The Week Magazine and was also awarded the ‘Best Single Speciality Hospital in India – Gynaecology’ by CNBC TV18 India Healthcare Award 2013.

In India, the focus now is on improving affordable healthcare for all

The best part is India’s health facilities are stretching in all directions. Earlier, it was majorly north India that had good medical facilities to look

forward to. But now it can be seen in most cities whereby, west and south India are making a definite impact. “In addition, all the required diagnostic and management-related tests are available now in most metropolitan cities and could be done without any loss of time. Most hospitals are hygienic, comfortable and have efficient staff (an important issue for most patients from abroad). Of considerable importance, most of the treatment and surgeries could be done at nearly 20 per cent of the cost as compared to many developed countries. Finally, they love our culture, lovely historical places and food that are bonus points,” adds Dr Misra.

People with long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes can suffer nerve damage to their feet, a condition called Peripheral Neuropathy (PN). Its sufferers may be unable to sense if their shoes are rubbing on the feet. It can also disrupt normal sweat secretion and oil production that lubricates the skin of the foot. CRITICAL ISSUES IN PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

P

90

rofessional education has grown very rapidly in India over the last 30 years, with the proportion of those who attend A C SHANMUGAM tertiary institutions Chairman to the relevant age group rising from 6% in 1983 to around 20% by 2011. Sadly, this growth has been greatly compressed into only a few areas. First, most of the growth has occurred primarily in professional fields, especially engineering and management and has been in private institutes rather than public ones. Such rapid growth has given rise to crucial challenges. Apart from the need to ensure quality to build graduate education and research universities, to provide equity of access and build excellent liberal arts universities, there are new emerging issues in the professional education. Student Learning - Student learning is everything from different pathways to graduation, encouraging student voice in

student learning, and encouraging them for larger conversations about their education (Lisa Nielsen’s Innovative Educator blog that focusses on student voice). So often we focus on teaching, but it’s learning that matters most. Technology - Even after all these years, technology is still a hot button issue. Some people love it and use it flawlessly every day, while others hate it and don’t see why they need to be forced to use it at all. Resistance to technology comes in many forms, but one of the key resistance challenges identified in the report is ‘comfort with the status quo’. According to researchers, teachers and school leaders often see technological experimentation as outside the scope of their job descriptions. Social Media - Twitter has exploded over the past few years. More and more educators are joining and finding members to their Professional Learning Network (PLN). What’s even better is that they are sharing resources and they are also using it to connect for professional development.

Ayurvedic therapies have also become one of the most sought-after treatments Dr Sibia further adds that the most important thing is that people realise that no ‘pathy’ can cure all diseases and India provides an opportunity to combine modern allopathy with the wisdom of eastern therapies.

Interestingly, western and southern parts of India have been able to capitalise on this phenomenon by establishing attractive medical tourism packages. Travel companies sell such packages by tying-up with their counterparts in different countries and Indian hospitals. Some of the popular surgeries that

Social media will be a major important player in the years to come. Professional development - Key among all challenges is the lack of adequate, ongoing professional development for teachers who are required to integrate new technologies into their classrooms yet who are unprepared or unable to understand new technologies. Effective formative assessments Assessment is an important driver for educational practice and change, and over the last few years we have seen a welcome rise in the use of formative assessment in educational practice. However, there is still an assessment gap in how changes in curricula and new skill demands are implemented in education. Simple applications of digital media tools offer considerable promise in giving teachers timely feedback they can use. Thus, in view of the above discussion, we can predict a paradigm shift in the education delivery module. The author is the Chairman of RajaRajeswari Group of Institutions.

people come to India for are dental care, cosmetic surgery, heart surgery, coronary bypass, heart check-up, valve replacements, knee replacements, eye care & treatment and orthopedic surgery. Further, as part of rejuvenation of mind and body, Ayurvedic therapies have also become one of the most sought-after treatments but that is typically non-surgical exercise and hence, can’t be referred to as medical in real terms. Yet, these therapies attract a lot of foreign nationals who might be looking for good recuperative options post their medical surgery in home country and travel fraternity is pitching them strongly. Modern healthcare facilities with a sound approach towards complete treatment for patients is fast becoming a common norm which is only going to get better with time.

A HELPING HAND Taking a step further, the Ability Unlimited Foundation has started a Therapeutic Education Centre at Dabarsi, Ghaziabad, where on offer are vocational courses in Bharatnatyam on wheelchairs and many other dance forms, to provide livelihood in the field of art and culture. “At Dabarsi, we have done organic farming and also installed solar energy plant. There are 20 teachers, 30 visiting faculty, 25 volunteers and 150 students,” adds Guru Syed Sallauddin Pasha.

SUCCESS STORY 94

One such name that comes to mind when we talk about the ‘special’ people is Gulshan Kumar who never thought his life would be anything beyond the wheelchair. But this polio-stricken wheelchair bound son of a washerman had no idea that his fate would one day take him to the House of Commons in London. While growing up he had faced discrimation and was a severely disabled youngster shunned by society. Till he was eight, he had nothing to do apart from helping his father by doing certain odd jobs. But life changed for him completely when he came across this healing centre that heals through music and dance. Since then he never looked back. Gulshan’s training in Bharatanatyam on wheelchair, Sufi dance and a performance on the Bhagawad Gita has made him a fine artist who has performed all over the world. He has also been listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of spins on a wheelchair. The Ability Unlimited Foundation has many such success stories. CELEBRATING TALENTS

Performing yoga on wheelchair trains the body, mind & spirit to become strong champion in wheelchair table tennis. Five years back, Sonu was just another disabled boy commuting to school on a wheelchair with no friends and no contact with the outside world. But therapeutic yoga, dance and music changed everything. Now, he is married and a father. According to Sayed Salauddin Pasha of AUF, their main aim is to rehabilitate disabled children from

The organisation believes in doing things differently. Yoga on wheels is one such first-of-its-kind training in the world which AUF has started. In this therapy, 5,000-year-old ancient Indian yogic poses are mastered and performed professionally on the wheelchair by differently-abled people. The message it conveys is that if given an opportunity, ‘sky is the limit’. Pasha has trained these specially abled people to use the body in different ways that they perform even the most difficult postures on wheel chairs. Performing yoga on wheelchair trains the body, mind & spirit to become strong and flexible, release stress and create inner peace, while developing a deep connection with one’s spirit, intuition and personal power. All of these are essential for living a healthy, balanced life. Apart from this, AUF’s therapeutic education has specifically designed diploma

WINNING LAURELS

The AUF team has many accolades to its credit for outstanding work in the field of people with disabilities. It has received the National Award for outstanding performances in the field of empowerment of persons with disabilities and has also found entry in Limca World Records and Guinness World Records for creating 100 dance theatre productions and 10,000 performances by persons with disabilities across the globe.

Awareness had to be spread among 70 million people with disabilities living in rural areas International theatre festival award was also given to AUF for creating Europe’s biggest therapeutic production for more than 100 people with disabilities at Helsinki, Finland. Elaborating on the establishment of this organisation, Pasha goes down memory lane telling us about a series of serious incidents that made him take this project as a challenge to showcase the abilities of persons with disabilities. “When I saw that people saw the disabled in bad light and used

undignified language (calling them mad or curse of past life.), I knew I had to do it,” said Pasha. Soon after realising this, he researched and realised that there was a need to spread awareness among the 70 million people with disabilities living in rural areas and to bring attitudinal change among the people. This led to the formation of Mega Theatre Dance Productions whose first performance took place in 1988. That was of Ramayana on wheelchair with 300 people with disabilities showcasing their extraordinary abilities. Coming from humble beginnings himself, Guru Syed Sallauddin Pasha has always had a special place for nature and he always believed in healing.

FUTURE PLANS Speaking about his future plans, Guru Syed Sallauddin Pasha says he wants to transform the country by creating a disabled friendly environment at home, in the workplace and society in general. He also wishes to nurture the artistic geniuses with disabilities, who are an invaluable source of the country but have been neglected so far.

These particular drawings take you back to a legendary time - swinging in the 70s. I started them when our old beautiful family home, with over 40 fruit trees, came down to make way for modern apartments. And I miss everything that defined this period. Though there were few shops then, the early systems of 'home delivery' worked well - milkman, eggman, breadman, fishman, fruitman, long broomman, hopper lady, salt cart, dhobhi, tailor, doctor, mechanic, all came calling.

DEPICTING HUMOUR

The central plot of each drawing is humour. Often you see the drawing quite clearly in your mind and you smile through it effortlessly. I make it a point to spend as much time as possible at the spot while planning a drawing, for there is much to ponder about. To assist the mind's eye, I always carry pencil, sketch pad and a camera and talk to people. Since each drawing involves composing buildings, people, vehicles and foliage from a memory of long ago, I prefer returning to the comforts of my studio to research and render it.

THE FASCINATION

I'm quite fascinated by the words ‘Do you remember...?’ They always manage to drum up a happy heady conversation, at any time and age. They have a way of being spoken when people are relaxed, not in a mad rush to get anywhere. They are normally the precursor to a quick witty story, a quirky memory or even some wild amusing anecdotes.

‘DO YOU REMEMBER...?’ IS WHAT MY GALLERY, APAULOGY, IN BENGALURU AND MUMBAI HAS BEGUN TO MEAN TO ME. CAPTURING THE CURRENT TIMES WILL TAKE ME 30 MORE YEARS TO GET NOSTALGIC ABOUT! April 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com

FAST FACTS Favourite cuisine: Local street favourites of the place I am in at the time. Favourite destination in India: Right now, Mumbai for holiday and work. There is much food for thought - and certainly humour. It's like visiting a huge, ever changing cartoon exhibition. An exhibition that invites people to view it, talk and write, draw and paint it. And after years, there is still 95% of it to see and explore. Favourite author/ book: Always willing to relax with a PG Wodehouse.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

For those who are bitten by the travel bug, we list a few of travel accessories and accompaniments that will make your journey more efficient and wholesome.

T

ravel can get a little difficult for some people. Lack of local recommendations and information, uncomfortable journeys... so on and so forth. You can make your journeys manageable with a few smart purchases and enjoy that trip to Goa, even if you’re all alone.

108

POWER DOCK

It’s a tech-savvy world, a world incomplete without a plethora of devices, be it iPod, iPads, tablets, smartphones, cameras, and much more. It’s a digital world and travelling with such newage toys can get difficult if you cannot charge them easily. Carry good quality power banks or power docks, especially those in which you can charge more than one device at a time.

TRAVEL PILLOWS

Travelling to a gorgeous summer destination but dreading the long-haul flight or bus ride? Pack in a travel pillow. This semi-circular cushion provides the much-needed support to your neck, allowing you to doze through your journey, making you reach your destination faster. Do check brands for their varying firmness. Animal shaped pillows are also available for children, and these do not take up much space in your luggage.

April 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com

DOCUMENT HOLDER

Losing your documents, visa papers, wallet or heaven forbid, your passport while on foreign land, can be nothing short of a disaster; so it’s better to get your hands on a good quality document holder. Not compromising on security or style, there are some amazing holders available that neatly tuck away your important papers.

MAP APPS

There are numerous apps that allow you to download the latest city maps on your smartphones, along with expert recommendations of their own. Best place to chow down local cuisine... they’ve got the answer; best route to reach the hotel... they’ve got the answer; translate road directions... they’ve got that too!

109

THE RIGHT CAMERA BAG

Travellers and photographers often lose sleep over the safety of their camera. Firstly, ensure your camera bag does not ‘look’ like an expensive camera bag. Secondly, if the bag has straps, carry it in front of you. It doesn’t matter if it looks like you’re carrying a baby bump, but it ensures the safety of your gear, especially while wading through crowded markets and modes of transport. Thirdly, you can consider buying hard cases for your cameras, such that knives and blades will not be able to slide through, and carry a good lock. Such bags are usually waterproof, but do check for this anyway.

PEN ON THE MOVE

You may not be an artist, compulsive writer, or even a travel blogger, but carrying a travel notebook is always a good idea. It may help you store the memories of your travels and relate them to your friends, and someday your grandchildren. Stick your tickets in them, sketch tiny maps, pen down brief restaurant reviews and travel anecdotes in leather bound journals, hardbacks or handmade paper; the options are numerous.

SAILING THROUGH MID-CAREER CRISIS

ABOUT THE BOOK Mid-Career Crisis, the 4th book by Partha Basu, is not just another management book. It is a work of Miction (Management Fiction), taking a break from regular management books, and probably first-of-its-kind on this much-talked about subject - Mid-Career Crisis. The author’s writing style and his ability to weave his own/collected experiences into practical corporate situations through 34 near-life stories enable the reader to connect at a personal level. He summarises the book with write ups from 10 top industry leaders, some known names and some not so, who shared about their mid-career crisis, which links the entire book and comes across as straight from the heart. The language is simple and the editing is good. The book is not preachy, it is more like reading a work of fiction. The readers can relate to almost every situation. Though the book is about MCC, people who have just started their careers will also find the book meaningful. This moment in life is characterised by many questions that baffle us and leave us not knowing what to do. As all of us are bound to face such kind of situations sometime in future, this book might spark some thought or trace of an answer in our subconscious, ready to take a leap of faith, if needed. A very refreshing read indeed.

Q: Why did you write this book? A: Last many years, I have been closely studying people to understand why some power ahead in their career while for the rest, the progress slows down during Partha Basu, Writer their mid-career. Are professionals who continue to grow in their careers different from the rest? Do they possess superior knowledge, sharper leadership skills or better educational qualifications? Or is it sheer luck that helps some sail through at work, while others start experiencing a plateau as they reach their mid-career? And over time, I realised the meaning of Mid-Career Crisis. As I was unable to find a right book to help me during my MCC to answer these questions, I wrote one for others. Q: How is this book different from other management books? A: This is not a regular management book, this book takes a break from the normal monologue and deals with the issues through 34 near-real life corporate stories which professionals can relate to thinking “I think I know this person” or “this is what has happened to me,” etc. At the end, we all remember stories and can learn through them; not from management lessons. Q: Why did you include 10 CEO life stories in the book? A: This was to relate my findings with senior successful professions, to ensure that readers understand how even successful CEOs have gone through a similar phase. I was amazed to note how well their stories illustrate the theme of this book: why some sail through while others don’t.

N

umerology is the most accurate predictive science, and has evolved from the ages of people counting stars as numerical references to today where we add up all the calculations and we have an outcome that guides you to the events in your life, and stay prepared for them. It just does not give you knowledge, it empowers you to plan, sketch your future, grow as a person, rise and shine. “To a person who seeks success, my system will bring success, happiness and prosperity. And to those who are already successful it will bring sustainability, positive reinforcements, further success and an introduce to a new and higher perspective and lifestyle.” The Journey to my methods “I am someone who has evolved, and with every step of my life have just tried to be better in what I love, I don’t just predict your future, I communicate, consult and help you empower your energies.” Every person is having an energy, a combination of them, and each combination is different, hence they have only certain types of energy and lack the other ones. This is what makes us human, that we can’t be perfect but we have to strive to be. My exclusive research and study of missing numbers in your birth graph helps me to determine what are the strong energies that I can see in you and uplift the missing energies to suit to your dreams and ambitions. With my years or research and positive successes, I help these missing energies in your graph. Its like providing nutrition to a body, by way of simple remedies and self improvement tools that I have developed by myself. My advice “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. Knowledge about finances, career, turnaround years, lucky dates, months, years, things that help you have a strong backup plan for everything in life. “No mantra, fasting, name changes singularly guarantees you anything. Ultimately its you who has to foresee the future, and I help you to do so.” The curious case of 4 & 8 “In my research, nearly 70% people are connected to these numbers. And once you enter the circle, these numbers will keep you in their loop for generations.” One usually guards themselves because we have all heard a lot about disappointments and delays, sorrows and hardships of 4 & 8 and even 7. But I see them powerful steroids, to be handled carefully, and with the help of my numerology you may be closer to understand how to deal with 4 & 8 in your life. Then channelize it to positive planning and maximise

your fortune’s profits. Feel blessed if you belong to them, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did. Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story. Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and de tangle the web to create a free way for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations but we are in the race of ordinary if we just sit back and give up. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. “We have seen the sunrise, but to feel the warmth of it we have to wake up every day.” And every one of us should strive to be more than what we can be, I do so, so should you. And let My Numerology help you and prepare you for this serene but extraordinary life. The Success road ahead. There is a Buddhist saying, “You yourself must strive; the Buddha’s just point the way.” There are no criteria to evaluate what the results of the remedies are; I just believe in helping who believe in the power of universe. If you believe in yourself and the universe let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no desired time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, everglorious and a good part of our society & I continue to achieve results with all my clients.”-Sandhiya Mehhta.

THE COMPANIES ACT, 2013 - CLASS ACTION SUITS

P

rotecting the investors’ interest, especially minority shareholder’s interest, has always been one of the foremost agenda of the regulators. The Companies Act, 2013–An Act that replaces the nearly six decade Companies Act, 1956 has introduced several new provisions to better safeguard the interest of the investors. The disclosure requirement under the Companies Act, 2013 has substantially increased to enable investors to make informed investment decisions. The Companies Act, 2013 has introduced the concept of class action under Section 245, which has been brought in as additional tool for investor protection. Prior to the enactment of Companies Act 2013, class actions suits have been filed as “representative suits” under Civil Procedure Code 1908 or under the pretext of public

CS Atul H Mehta President, ICSI interest litigations (PILs). The concept has been introduced in India in the aftermath of the Satyam corporate scandal, wherein numerous small investors of Satyam Group in India were unable to seek effective relief from Satyam’s management as against

their counterparts in the US who brought class action suits against Satyam and made good their loss. Class action suits provide investors with a medium to fight as one unit against the errant company or management, thereby reducing multiplicity of suits, costs of ligation and increase their chances of success in the process. Even deposit holders can take recourse to this against any wrongful act by the company or other specified persons. One of the foremost advantages of Class actions is that payments are spread equally across all injured parties. Which means, in case of compensation, it is not just the big investors who have pursued the case get the majority of compensation and the small investors get whatever is left of the residue - the compensation is equally spread.

The morning shift of SpiceJet’s Flight Support Centre was handled by an all-women team. Also, an interesting campaign was launched for the Twitterverse, when the official Twitter handle of the airline was in the hands of four select women staff. They engaged the Twitteratti in live interactive chat sessions throughout the day, answering questions about women in aviation.

FLYING HIGH WITH SPICEJET SpiceJet’s Trainee First Officer/Co-Pilot, Munazzah Baig speaks her mind on life, career, dreams and aspirations.

There were some people who told me that I could not become a pilot because I am a woman, but I gained my strength from their discouragement and took it as a challenge and proved them wrong! After being in this field for eight years, today my friends and colleagues appreciate my work and are proud of me.

A DREAM COME TRUE

SpiceJet was always my dream company. I love the work environment and I can relate to what it stands for - "Whatever we do, we do it with all our heart".

126

There is nothing like the smell of jet fuel in the morning and the feeling of being in uniform

B

eing a woman in the aviation industry is not a cakewalk career option. The job requires a lot of focus, persistent hard work and responsibility. Initially, I found the industry difficult. I am artistically inclined and this is a mechanical field. It was tough to mould my thought and work process. However, my parents had complete faith in me, and many others encouraged me along the way.

April 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com

STAY POSITIVE

One of the biggest challenges in any profession is to overcome the factors that drive people away from their aim. To be positive in all circumstances and give a positive response even in a negative situation is key to reach any goal. When we fly a jet engine, you always have to be ahead of the airplane. Your brain needs to think three times faster than the speed of the jet. Initially, it was difficult, but I got used to it with time.

I have been working since the age of 15 and have been a part of various professions, ranging from being a flight attendant to working for an international modelling brand; all the while studying for my flying exams. From the moment I joined SpiceJet, I have been flying high. It really was my dream come true. To have persevered so hard to reach this stage in life, I am proud of myself and of being a part of SpiceJet. Writing is one of my hobbies that I would like to take up along with my aviation career. I hope to publish a book in the next 3 years.

SPREADING THE HOLI CHEER

I'm with SpiceJet... For me, SpiceJet and those working with this airline are my extended family. We all work for a common objective - to make SpiceJet one of the best airlines across the world. This year's Holi & Women's Day celebrations brought me closer to the management, and I have also been appreciated by them for my hard work. It is always fun to be with this company! I'm with SpiceJet... Just like any other company, even a family goes through difficult times. We have stayed and served together, and now SpiceJet will fly to new heights. I follow three principles of life - Integrity, Respect & Discipline and SpiceJet helps me rise with pride.

MUSIC ON BOARD

SpiceJet flights play soft rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... EAGLES Tequila Sunrise An Eagles classic from 1973, the lazy, laidback style of the 'California sound' was pioneered by the Eagles in the 70s. Ironically neither Glenn Frey nor Don Henley is a Californian.

134

RODNEY JONES Ain’t No Sunshine This is an instrumental version of the 1971 hit by Bill Withers, who incidentally was working on the assembly line of the Boeing 747 aircraft when he wrote this song! SANTANA Black Magic Woman This song was a huge hit for San Francisco Latin rock band, Santana in 1970. It is originally a Fleetwood Mac song, written in 1968. SEALS AND CROFTS Get Closer This song was released as a single in 1976, with the semi-obssessive lyrics 'Darling if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me… If you want me to love only you, then love only me'.

NEIL YOUNG Heart of Gold This Dylan-esque Neil Young hit from 1972 is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. This track features James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals. SIMON & GARFUNKEL Homeward Bound It was written by Paul Simon in 1965 and performed by the duo. It describes Simon's longing to return home to his then girlfriend, Kathy Chitty, who was in London.

PAUL SIMON Kathy’s Song

CROSBY STILLS & NASH Just a Song Before I Go

Paul Simon moved to England to pursue a solo career in 1965. At the first club he played, he met Kathy Chitty who became his girlfriend and inspiration for 'Kathy's Song'.

The song was written by Graham Nash in 1977 in Hawaii in about 20 minutes when he was waiting for the rain to stop before leaving the house.

OSIBISA Welcome Home Osibisa is a Ghanaian Afro-pop band, founded in London in 1969 by four expatriate African and three Caribbean musicians. 'Welcome Home' is a haunting tune with plaintive rootless immigrant lyrics yearning for belonging.

April 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com

JOSE FELICIANO Rain

ABBA Slipping Through My Fingers From ABBA's final album The Visitors from 1981, the song is about a mother's regret at how quickly her daughter is growing up.

Performed by José Feliciano, a Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist, blind from birth, singer and composer, this 1969 song is included among his greatest.

NEIL DIAMOND Brooklyn Roads

SANTANA Samba Pa Ti This is a Latin-influenced instrumental track from the 1970 album Abraxas, that became Santana's breakout album. THE TOURÉ-RAICHEL COLLECTIVE Le Niger The group is led by Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli singer and pianist Idan Raichel. THE BEATLES In My Life One of the simplest, and most melancholic and the most poignant tracks by The Beatles from their mop-top days of 1965, the song is an example of John Lennon's deeper side. HARRY CHAPIN Cat’s In The Cradle 'Cat's in the Cradle' is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin. The song is told by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son, offering promises of spending time together in future.

This is a beautiful track from 1968, where Neil Diamond reminisces about his childhood home and the growing up days in Brooklyn with his parents and brother, knowing there is no going back to those days. ELTON JOHN Daniel A lilting hit in 1973, the song's co-writer Bernie Taupin said the story was about a guy who went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. The people treated him like a hero, but, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and live the life that he'd led before. GARY MOORE Still In Love With You It is a hauting song originally recorded by Thin Lizzy, first released in 1974 album Nightlife. It is widely considered to be Thin Lizzy's greatest, most romantic ballad.

JOHN LENNON God This 1970 song has one of the most powerful opening lines in rock history: 'God is a concept by which we measure our pain'. He then goes on to add 'I don't believe in the Beatles, I just believe in me, Yoko and me', marking his breakaway from the group. UB40 Don’t Break My Heart This simple UB40 ballad from 1985 was a huge hit, and stirs many memories amongst those of a certain age, evoking first crushes and slow dances from days gone by. GORDON LIGHTFOOT Sundown This song by a Canadian folk artist was released in 1974. The lyrics seem to describe a troubled romantic relationship, with the narrator recounting an affair with a "hard-loving woman [who's] got me feeling mean". DOBIE GRAY Drift Away

This recording by Dobie Gray in 1973 became a big hit, and is a staple on US classic rock stations. It is a great track to relax and reminisce to.
