Cover story

SpiceJet flies to Dubai from Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi.

Dubai: exotic Arabian nights Starry, starry nights paint the desert in romantic hues. Flavour a wild dune-bashing desert safari in Dubai with quiet moments plucked out of an Arabian Nights’ fantasy. A quiet walk across dunes of rippling orangered sands; a camel ride into a sunset of fiery colours; the plaintive wail of a one-string violin drawn across the silence of the desert; the call of a hooded falcon; a belly dancer gyrating in a Bedouin-like camp, snuggle by a toasty campfire. There is no middle road in Dubai. The Sheikhdom believes in superlatives… even when it comes to romance. Here you can woo that special someone like a sheikh - on a dhow dinner cruise or better still charter a private yacht and gaze out at Dubai’s flamboyant skyline from the sun deck. Cuddle for warmth in a winter wonderland called Ski Dome in the Mall of Emirates (yes, the snow is very real). Escape the madding crowds in an oasis resort in the remote Hatta Mountains which was once the stronghold of the sheikhs of the Emirate. Impress her or him by booking a table for two in one of the many plush restaurants in the

iconic Burj Al Arab hotel. Do something crazy together and don outrageous hats in keeping with local tradition and attend the Dubai World Cup, the richest horse race in the world. Yes, Dubai is all about indulgence on an epic scale.

Bentota: Life's a beach A couple sat under a fluttering white tent at a flower-bedecked table for two, set up on the golden sweep of Sri Lanka’s Bentota beach. The two lovers seemed to have plunged into the romance-drenched moment and were revelling in the champagne breakfast that their hotel had laid out for them. In the distance, a man stood silhouetted on a rock. He cast a fishing rod into the curling waves even as fishing craft bobbed in the distance. That is the picture of life on Bentota beach juxtaposed with a love-drenched rendezvous on the sands! This pristine 6-km long beach is just a one and a half hour drive away from Colombo and boasts a clutch of resorts that are wrapped in an aura of seclusion. Days unfold lazily –

Clockwise from right: Galle Lighthouse in Sri Lanka; Sunset at the Bentota beach; Gorgeous view from a hotel

stroll down powder-soft sands; check out the mysterious mask museum at Ambalangoda; amble around the Dutch fort in Galle at the southern tip of the country; indulge in a spot of yoga and meditation in a spa or on the beach. Savour a candle-lit dinner for two under the stars or on a sea-view terrace with a violinist in attendance at the Taj Exotica, for instance. Come evening, stop the world and get off – watch the sun set and turn the ocean to a shade of liquid gold.

Emperor Jehangir had said he knew of no place as pretty as Mandu during the rains

Mandu: Royal romance Mandu in Madhya Pradesh is a cocoon of love. Here, Emperor Baz Bahadur would serenade his queen Rani Roopmati each night from the terrace of his palace while she prayed to the Narmada River in the valley below. Mughal Emperor Jehangir fell hopelessly in love with the place and declared: “I know of no place as pretty as Mandu during the rains.” The Jahaz Mahal which seems to float like a ship in a lake was the favourite retreat of Emperor Jehangir and Empress Noor Jehan. The palace was built by Ghiasuddin Khilji to house his 15,000-strong harem. A devout man who never missed a namaz or touched a drop of wine, Ghiasuddin loved to sit on his throne flanked by 1,000 Turkish and Abyssinian women masquerading as armed guards. Yes, the fortified citadel of Mandu, studded with over 100 ancient monuments, makes the perfect backdrop for an epic love story even today. Most of the important monuments are located in three main clusters: the Royal Enclave, the Central Cluster and Roopmati’s Pavilion. These include Hindola Mahal or Swing Palace, Taveli Mahal and the marble mausoleum of Hoshang Shah.

Enjoy an intimate picnic in an abandoned watchtower and gaze out at the mist swirling up from the valley below. Allow this enchanting spot to whisk you off on a romantic journey that hovers on the cusp of reality. February 2013 28 www.spiceroutemag.com

Located at an altitude of 2,148 metres, a 45-minute drive from Shimla, Mashobra snoozes in the midst of dense forests of oak and pine. Flowers bloom in rich ripples of colour in shady glens while jagged mountains soar defiantly upwards. Studded with pretty walks, hikes and picnic spots, you can even do a spot of brawny river rafting in Mashobra. Time seems to be in rewind in this dreamy hill resort where colonial homes with evocative names like Fairlawn and Apple Tree House nap in the sun, encircled by sun-stunned terraced fields. Stoke your love for the significant other in your life or rekindle the embers of mature love as you trek hand in hand down the gentle Wild Strawberry Trail, listening to the rustle of cedars that have stood tall for centuries; tee off at pretty Naldehra, 11 km away, stop for a picnic lunch for two in wild Chindi valley and drive back along mountain roads ablaze with the sun’s last bow. Retreat to the woodpanelled comfort of Wildflower Hall, the former residence of Lord Kitchener now burnished and restored by Oberoi Hotels and Resorts. Hold your chilled hands over a crackling fire place, and feel the warmth of your love.

Bandipur: The wild side The forests of Bandipur Tiger Reserve hum with seen and unseen life – its depths resonate with the clarion calls of jungle birds, the trumpeting of elephants and of bison crashing through the thicket. The park’s location at the foot of the misty Nilgiris lends Bandipur an aura of mysterious romance. In the former hunting grounds of the maharajas of Mysore, photo ops are everywhere – sip tall drinks by a campfire at The Serai Bandipur whose Mountain View Log Huts and Courtyard Rooms lasso magnificent views of the Blue Mountains rising out of thick bands of wilderness. Raise a toast to your togetherness in the bar of your forest lodge, and dine by candlelight in even as shadows leap and dance outside in the velvety dark. Come morning, embark on a safari when you may spot herds of elephants and bisons with rippling hides, a lithe leopard on a tree or even that striped feline, the tiger! Scrape off the dust of an exciting game ride with a rubdown in a forest spa. Indeed Bandipur is a yearround destination where one can go birding, or drive/hike up to the Gopalswamy hilltop temple overlooking a dense forested valley where herds of elephant roam resembling moving boulders. DAY ONE 9:00 AM The Cit y Palace Museum I commenced my two-day sojourn by visiting the imposing City Palace complex. Soaking in the history of the Mewar rulers was a must, before exploring their capital city. I noticed the grandeur of the Royal House of Mewar is by far the most important and is among the premier

of all Hindu princely families in India and Nepal. Each successive ruler in the six centuries added on to the original structure, resulting in a series of palaces, pavilions, and royal apartments, ranging from Bari Pol, the main gateway on the Northern end built in 1600 up till the Shiv Niwas Palace which was completed in the early 20th century. Spread over four acres of land, the complex houses the City Palace Museum, Shiv Niwas and the Fateh Prakash hotels apart from other interesting looking structures. 35

The museum houses a varied collection of the paintings of the Mewar school of miniature paintings depicting detailed court scenes. The Mor Chowk or the Peacock courtyard is yet another special spot of the museum.

The boat cruise concluded at the picturesque island of Jag Mandir, yet another pleasure palace is supposed to have given sanctuary to the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan before he actually ascended the throne. In fact it is said that it was at this spot that he got inspired to build the Taj Mahal. Here you can sit back and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

Post lunch I decided to visit yet another museum in the vicinity of the City Palace, The Royal Vintage Car Collection and Museum. Housed in the Royal Garages, the collection boasts of a variety of classic and vintage cars most of whom are in pristine condition. One of its gems – The 1924 Rolls Royce 20 HP, Barker Tourer was recently exhibited at the renowned Pebble beach in California, U.S.A and was also awarded a trophy. After an extremely hectic day it was time for some relaxation. The hour-long ‘Sunset Cruise’ on Lake Pichola was simply awesome and the perfect way to end the day. Traversing the tranquil and azure waters of the scenic lake was a postcard perfect experience. Circumnavigating the lake gave me ample opportunity to comprehend the sheer magnitude of the entire palace complex. Swathed in a brilliant golden hue the edifices looked enchanting. Moreover, I could now also view Udaipur’s piece de’ resistance - The February 2013 36 www.spiceroutemag.com

6:30 PM Sound and Light Show Organised at the Manek chowk, within the City Palace, the sound and light show is the best way to rekindle the romance with history. The show traces the history of the Mewar rulers beginning with its founder Bappa Rawal in the 8th century until Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar its present and 75th custodian of the Royal House of Mewar.

8:30 PM Rajasthani dinner Possibly one of the best located restaurants in Udaipur, Ambrai is the perfect venue for dinner. Situated on the lake Pichola, across the City Palace and besides the Amet Haveli, the quaint eatery enjoys an uninterrupted but truly magnificent view of the superbly, illuminated City Palace. The ambience is amazing, and so is the food.

DAY TWO 9:00 AM Saheliyon Ki Baadi Saheliyon Ki Baadi is a charming garden interspersed with handsome marble pavilions, gorgeous lily pools and a profusion of marble elephants spraying fountains. Adjoining the east of the embankment of Fatehsagar lake it was constructed in its present form by Maharana Fateh Singh. The garden has assumed the attraction of one of the glamour spots of the city for Indian cinema and has contributed considerably to many film shootings.

10:00 aM Lake Fateh Sagar and Chetak Memorial From the gardens I went on to Udaipur’s another picturesque lake, the Fateh Sagar. Near the lake sits the Chetak Memorial, dedicated to the favourite steed of the valorous Maharana Pratap. Apparently, Chetak died a hero’s death on the battlefield trying to save his master and thereby earned a permanent place in the annals of the history of Mewar.

11:00 aM Rajasthani shopping After a date with history, it was time for some shopping. The markets around Hathi Pol, the Gangaur ghat and the Jagdish temple are shopper’s paradise in Udaipur. The lanes and by-lanes around the temple are lined with scores of tiny shops selling crafts, paintings, curios, marble artifacts, leather articles, garments, books oxidized silver jewelry February 2013 38 www.spiceroutemag.com

and much more all catering to the tourist. While shops around the Hathi Pol are more traditional in nature, thus you have the silver and goldsmith’s, fabric dealers, spice markets, utensils etc. Here, you can have a hearty lunch of the traditional Rajasthani food.

2:30 PM Shilpgram art village It was time for some relaxed excursion, so I headed towards the Shilpgram, which happens to be an aesthetically designed crafts village that showcases artifacts from artisans and craftsperson’s from different parts of the country. Lying on the western fringe of the Fateh Sagar lake, it takes about half an hour by road to reach Shilpgram. Regular demonstrations and performances by folk artists are a big draw during the winter months of November to February.

4:30 PM Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace Last on my agenda was taking a tour to Sajjangarh or the Monsoon palace which apparently was also featured as the secret hideout in a James Bond flick starring Roger Moore. Fantastic 360 degree views of the valley and the forest can be seen from here. No wonder the place is a popular monsoon picnic destination, just about an hour away from the city.

he set idli served in the highway joints while driving from Bengaluru to Srirangapatnam marks the half-way mark of the journey, in physical terms. But in a symbolic way, it is indicative of a cultural change, taking the traveller away from the bustling big-city feel of Bengaluru towards the more rustic charm of the countryside. The gleaming corporate offices of the city are replaced by a green carpet of fields, swanky apartment complexes in gated communities by small, single-floor houses so widely dispersed that seems impossible for them to be a part of the same village. There are no malls to idle away long weekend afternoons here, only the occasional fair that brings a village alive. Srirangapatnam, once the proud capital of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom still has traces of the past with high walls that once served as a protection for the place, together with a moat which also remains till date.

Royal enclave The walls are pierced by gateways at certain points, each of these having a popular name used by locals such as the Delhi Gate, Mysore Gate, Bangalore Gate, Elephant Gate and the Water Gate. The first three gateways allow a visitor direct access to the inside of citadel, where the royals once resided. Two lofty, yellow coloured minarets catch the eye within. These rise to the sky from the Jama Masjid which was built in 1787 by Tipu. An inscription within the mosque confirms the date. Compared to other congregational mosques in the country, the Jama Masjid – also called the Masjid-e-Ala – is rather simple in design. Steps

lead to the top of both minarets. On one side is a stepped tank. The place is also home to a madrasa where young scholars are observed studying the tenets of Islam under the watchful eyes of their elderly masters. While Srirangapatnam is not a big city, the places that are a must-see for a tourist here are spread over a large area. Hence, the most convenient way to get around is by a car or bike. A very short drive from the Jama Masjid lies the Water Gate. The name finds its origin in the fact that Srirangapatnam is an island surrounded by the Cauvery River. However, the island effect is often missed as the volume of water in the river has reduced over time. Apart from its natural beauty, Srirangapatnam is like a living museum to the reign of Tipu Sultan, filled as it is with signs of his life and even his death. The places are a testimony of the sultan’s great struggle for Independence. Not far from the Water Gate, another stone tablet in the ground bears a grim message – it marks the place where Tipu’s body was found after his death in 1799. Also giving evidence to this struggle is a dungeon named after Captain Bailey, who was a prisoner here. Another dungeon is named after Thomas Inman, who is believed to have been an engineer who worked here after the British took over.

Spiritual heart Moving away from death and dungeons, a visitor comes to the most ‘alive’ place in Srirangapatnam. The temple of Sri Ranganathaswamy gives its name to the town and in this era where Tipu is long gone, its focal point. Pilgrims from all over the region make their way to the temple which stands

tall in a walled complex. The road in front is a riot of hawkers and shops selling everything from temple offerings and snacks to souvenirs for tourists and clothes. Alive to the flavour of the place, there are some hawkers also selling postcards, posters and even clothes depicting Tipu Sultan. It is an interesting place to spend some time in, with all the colours and hues of rural Karnataka visible. The temple is entered through an

imposing gateway with rich stone carvings depicting Hindu iconography, a feature which a visitor sees in full measure within the shrine. A long passage leads to the inner sanctum where an almost human-looking figure of Ranganathaswamy greets the visitors. The temple is at its best – and also most crowded – during Makar Sankranti. On this auspicious day, the festival of Lakhadweepotsava is celebrated here with the lighting of one lakh lamps. It is an amazing experience to be part of and one that no visitor would forget ever. Outside the citadel are two other significant buildings which take a person back into Tipu’s era. The first of these is Daria Daulat Bagh, a beautiful though small summer palace set in lush lawns. There are several

found out the hard way that 18 years can seem like a lifetime! 18 years ago, the limbs were stronger, the blood younger and the heart ever willing. The heart and the spirit are still willing, but I realised that the other two parts had become slightly jaded as I forced myself to climb the steep incline on the way to Dzukou Valley. And like all those years back, I was cursing my decision to do the 15 km (approx. one way) trek until I reached the top and looked down at the wide open valley. As I looked down, I realised that the words of my guide held water when he said “you will forget your tiredness as the valley unfolds before you!”

February 2013 46 www.spiceroutemag.com

Trekking tour The Dzukou valley in Kohima district of Nagaland is one of the best trekking routes in the entire North East India. There are different routes to get to the valley and we choose one of the easier route which starts from Jakhama, 16kms from Kohima. It is also called the Southern Range. As we left the highway and took a diversion to get to the starting point, the road climbed up sharply and at the same time crumbled so badly that the vehicles had to be pushed. The road is a relatively new one and it

The sun broke through the clouds and brightened the valley below that was draped in a sheet of velvety green has made the life of trekkers much easier. The Nagaland Tourism Department have done well to construct some sort of a pathway that has helped make the approach to the top much easier. Even with the stone steps, I found the going rather tough and then realised that it must have been absolutely back breaking to climb this route before the stone steps came up. After about four kms of climbing through the stone slabs and huge rocks chiselled for footholds, we reached the top. The vegetation changed abruptly at the top. Until now, we were climbing through some thickly wooded areas where long stout veins dropped down from the trees and the leaves were of a deeper

shade of green. In contrast, the top was barren and extremely windy with a sheer drop and breathtaking beauty of the valley below. A five-minute break stretched to 15 and as soon as we started again and crossed a coppice gate, we were transported to a different world altogether. The mountains gently rolled into each other in a never ending chain. We didn’t have to climb up the rocks anymore but walked gently along a narrow path shaved out from the middle of the hills.

Rolling hills Another trek of five kilometers brought us to a trekkers camp. The camp is actually a big hall with a kitchen at the back. But although February 2013 48 www.spiceroutemag.com

the hall would protect us from the cold and the wind, it didn’t appeal to any of us. Words seem rather inadequate to describe the view of the valley way below from the rest house. The rolling hills gradually lost their elevation and slowly gave away to the great planes. From the rest house on top, it looked like God had draped the valley in a sheet of velvety green as far as the eye could see. The three young boys from Viswema village – Mecievikho Khatso, Nosavi Natso and Khviskh Natso who were our guides and everything else for the trek pointed out to a rock formation about 4 kms away on the valley. From far it looked just like a pile of rocks in the middle of a great plane but it did look

Quick getaway

interesting. We walked down the hills, past the helipad (I wonder how many times the helicopter landed here) and then we hit the planes. Narrow streams of icy water crisscross the planes and the villagers have built some lovely wooden bridges across the streams. Since there are no huge trees to scribble their name on, trekkers have come up with a better idea. They just paint their names with bright colours on flat stones and put them on the stream bed. The water is crystal clear and one can see and read the names clearly from the bridge. The pile of rocks turned out to be better. It was a rock formation called the Khuzama Camp with an overhang and this was where we decided to halt for the night. There are two other camps a little way off and they have been named as Jakhama and Kigwema camps. The boys from Jakhama were excellent and they got about the business of making dinner. We reached the camp early evening but by the mountain standards, it was already rather late and time for dinner. We cut the tall and tough reeds and covered the open area to keep the wind out. As soon as the sun disappeared behind the mountains, the wind came howling and the cold set in forcing all of us as close to the fire as possible. The reeds did help in keeping the wind out but you should invest in a very good

sleeping bag if you decide to spend the night outdoor. I woke in the middle of the night and looked up to see a brilliant moon and a million stars shine on us from a cloudless sky. I had them all to myself for a few minutes before the biting cold drove me inside the sleeping bag. In all these years of travelling and camping, I have not come across a more spectacular early morning sight. The sun had still not shone on us and the valley was shrouded in mist and frost. The vegetation was covered in frost and it was white as far as we could see. Portions of the streams had frozen over and so did a bucket of water! Mountains they say change their colour as the day progresses and I actually saw it happening. Shades of green and golden yellow and the cloud play made it all the more amazing. The Dzukou Valley sure can get a hold on you...no matter which time of the year you travel. In the winters (we went in December), the frost on the plants, icy streams, shades of green and yellow on the mountains and the brilliant blue clear sky in the day bejewelled by a million stars in the night will enthral you. And if you travel in the flowering season on May and June, the different shades of rhododendrons flowers that cover the valley will make your heart smile. They say that if you travel to Dzukou Valley

aj Mahal is the first and perhaps the only thing which comes to anyone’s mind at the mention of Agra. And it is but natural. After all, whether its the Clintons, the Obamas, the Musharrafs, the Sarkozys or the British Royals for that matter, none of the celebrities forgot to complete their visit to India by travelling to this small town for that one glance at the monument of eternal love. Bottom: Entrance to the Red Fort in Agra; Right: Tourists visiting the Jahangiri Mahal palace of the Agra Fort

The 110 ft high Dayal Bagh temple is bejewelled with the magnificent marble carvings and inlay work I also took my guests from the United States With almost a similar mindset towards the erstwhile capital of the Mughals, we went to Agra on the first day of the year, that is January 1. We could not believe our eyes that at sub-normal temperature of around 4 degree centigrade, people were standing in almost a kilometer-long queue enveloped in a thick blanket of fog to experience the most visited monument in the country.

Equally enchanting Scared to dare the biting chill, especially with two elderly and two children below the age of five in tow, we decided to first visit other attractions which would be less crowded like the Dayal Bagh Temple which is some 10-15 km to the north of Agra. Some consider this building as an alternative to the great Taj Mahal as the temple is noted for the marble carvings, and inlay work, that is claimed to be superior to those at the Taj Mahal. One can also see artists carving

at the site. The temple is build of pure white marble and houses the samadhi of the founder of the Radha Swami faith. But what is most intriguing is the fact that the magnificent 110 ft high structure which is under construction for more than last 100 years is not expected to be completed until sometime next century. Radha Swami is the founder of a unique religion that aims at bringing all religions under one umbrella and preaches unity of mankind. The aim of this structure is to build a temple for Hindus, a church for Christians, a gurudwara for Sikhs and a mosque for Muslims, each on a separate floor (in the same building) to symbolize brotherhood and unity in mankind. The artistic work here is wonderful and has an outstanding visual appeal. However, locals believe that perfect harmony between all the religions at once is impossible, so the building symbolizing it would never be complete.

Timeless architecture By the time we wound up our harried trip to the Dayal Bagh, sun god had started peeping February 2013 54 www.spiceroutemag.com

through the thick sheet of fog and we were told this was the best time to visit the Taj lest the sun sets and it become dark. And here we were at the Taj again through the narrow lanes of the Agra. The crowd had dispersed a bit for us to get a decent view of the mesmerising white beauty at the bank of Yamuna river. Lot has been written about Taj Mahal but I still wonder how can one describe one of the most beautiful buildings of the world. Nothing can beat the monument of eternal love when it comes to the aesthetics. Its grace, grandeur and visual greatness is simply timeless. Timeless because this was my second visit to the mausoleum and it was still at the peak of its romantic beauty. I had last visited the place as a child in 1989 and it seemed to have grown younger since then with better upkeep, perhaps because of increase of an array of international dignitaries visiting the magnificent monument. What is immediately striking is its graceful

through fine latticework and hanging above was an elaborate Cairene lamp. As we came out, our guide showed us the use of the op-art on Taj Mahal. For instance, the black zig-zag stone work on columns would give an in and out look to the straight plane columns and the verses of Quran were written in growing font size on the frames of enormous gates so that one can see an equal size of fonts throughout. Another fact that the four minarets surrounding the main structure are tilted outwardly has some great brains behind the design so that in case of an earthquake they fall away from the main structure and not over it. Each minaret is 130 feet tall. This is indeed an example of beauty with brains. The Taj Mahal looks the same from all four sides and is flaked by two red stone structures – a mosque and a guest house for special invitees of the emperor – underlining Shah Jahan’s love for symmetry. Above: Interior of the mosque at the Taj Mahal complex; Bottom: Fatehpur Sikri, the old city set by Akbar near Agra

The whole image shimmers in a reflecting pool flanked by beautiful gardens the whole effect is magical. The first stretch by the reflecting pool is where most people pose

We strolled up to the plinth and joined the tourists climbing the stairs to the platform. The sun was setting and the minarets were now stark against the setting sun. The actual dome was a surprise, it is not yellow-white but bluewhite and covered in inscriptions and detail. From below it looked like something out of the ‘Arabian Nights’. Fatehpur Sikri is another tourist attraction in Agra. A city that was once the proud capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri now stands deserted as a well preserved ghost town. It was abandoned by its occupants after only 15 years due to the insufficient water supply. Fatehpur Sikri was established by Emperor Akbar from the twin villages of Fatehpur and Sikri as tribute to famous Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti from Sikri, who blessed Akbar with three sons. As a gesture, Akbar built a whole new city in Sikri. A visit to Agra is not complete without bringing back the gooey angoori petha, the delectable dessert from the city of love.

inger is to Indians what cheese is to the Italians. We all have our own set of conceptions for ginger, which is also referred to as ginger root. But lesser do we know that it is actually the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale. It is interesting even to know that some of the other popular herbs that belong to the same family are turmeric and cardamom. Ginger is not at all a great looking herb. With a pale beige skin, it looks pretty much the same when peeled, unlike the most exotic herbs. But even if this herb is not colourful, ginger can not only enrich the taste of a dish but also boost up the colour quotient of the other spices used in the same. That surely makes this herb a unique treat in itself!

Gingerly treatment Have you ever wondered how ‘ginger’ got its name? There is a bit of history involved here. This English name, actually hails from a more sophisticated French term gingembre. While in Old English this herb was referred to as gingifere, in Medieval Latin as ginginer and in Greek as zingíberis, but what is interesting is

Crispy Ginger Cookies Ingredients 1/2 cup chopped ginger 2 cups of bread crumbs 3 table spoon sugar 1½ tsp. baking soda ½ cup butter 2 tsp. cinnamon powder ½ tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 1cup beaten egg 4 cups of flour Method:

Add ginger to spice up the otherwise bland butter milk and enjoy greater health benefits at the same time the fact that eventually, this popular herb got its name from the Tamil word ‘inji ver’ which literally means root in botany. Today there are hotels, restaurants and even fashion brands named as ‘Ginger’ for the unique fun quotient that this herb translates. The cultivation of ginger spread across to the other parts of the world as well, like East Africa and the Caribbean. With time, this herb has actually carved a special niche not only in the kitchen but as aroma medicine too.

Unique qualities Once a chef had told me her ‘secret recipe’ over a Tibetian buffet. According to her, while cooking if you stir in a few chopped ginger pieces along with garlic, any dish will taste exotic for sure. So, this combination of spices can make your preparation seem effortless yet praiseworthy at the same time. Such is the power of ginger and even its hot spice quotient can be enjoyed on its own. Simply try, if you are not a ginger fan already. While hot ginger tea can relieve the most dreaded headaches, a glass of chilled ginger ale can be served up as a refreshing beverage. Ginger bread and cookies have a unique snack value as they cut out the overload of sugary treats to a great extent. So

no wonder why ginger is added to carrot cakes and a few other bakery delights that usually have a coconut base. Even Indian sweet meats use grated ginger in moderation in order to attain a unique flavour. Also, the shelf life gets increased due to its antibacterial properties.

A useful friend Even as a part of home remedies for regular cold and cough, one can chew raw ginger for stomach aches. People also believe that ginger helps in weight management to some extent and should be eaten on empty stomach. Of course, it is true that this herb aids in digestion of food and some people who are prone to acidity are advised to have homemade ginger churan at the end of their meals. Some even add ginger fibers to spice up the otherwise bland butter milk and enjoy greater health benefits at the same time. Ginger has been a part of the traditional herbal remedies across many countries and specially in India. This herb helps in providing relief to women suffering from menstrual cramps. In fact, ginger is believed to have the power of curing ovarian cancer as well, but the research about the same is still going on at international research centres. All in all, a useful friend that you have in your kitchen cabinet. February 2013 66 www.spiceroutemag.com

Mix the flour, bread crumbs, beaten egg along with sugar and butter over gentle flame, in an open vessel. Let the mixture settle in for 3 minutes. Remove from the flame and stir in baking soda such that it blends into the dough smoothly. Now add the ginger, cinnamon powder and cloves for garnishing. Spread out the dough evenly on a plastic wrap, placed over an aluminum tray and cover it with a baking sheet. Once the dough appears a bit solid and crispy, may be after 1 hour or so, use the cookie cutters to get your desired ginger cookies.

t is often said that one of the best ways to stay healthy is to stick to seasonal and local produce. It ensures that during the course of a year you eat a variety of different foods, each with unique health benefits that are in tandem with the season. And this seasonal cycle of change is not limited to just vegetables and fruits. The kind of spices used and the ways in which they are used also change according to the season. In fact, kitchen lores passed down from grandmothers will tell you that there’s a spice for every season, every illness and every occasion. On the cusp of seasonal change, we bring you special spices that are sure to keep you healthy from within.

Tender turmeric In my grandmother's Gujarati household, we knew that winter had arrived when little bottles of pickled turmeric and green peppercorns in brine made their appearance on the table. Turmeric is probably the most used Indian spice. Dry powdered turmeric is used all year around lending Indian food its signature yellow colour. Haldi as the spice is commonly known, is valued for its antiseptic properties, which is why it is added to just about every dish that comes out of February 2013 68 www.spiceroutemag.com

Rich in anti-oxidant properties and prescribed as a home remedy for minor throat and stomach infections it is ubiquitous in the Indian kitchen. Although turmeric in its dried form is used round the year, winter also sees fresh turmeric root making an appearance in markets around India. Spicy, zesty and slightly floral in flavour it smells like a combination of ginger and orange and stains everything in a bright orange colour. Maharashtrian and Gujarati communities combine fresh turmeric with mango, ginger, green chillies, salt and lime to make a salty-sour, pungent pickle that is

eaten as an accompaniment to dal-rice. It can also be grated and added to curries, soups and rice preparations much like ginger and is considered warming in the winter, preventing cold and cough.

Go ginger Ginger which belongs to the same botanical family as turmeric, is another warming spice. It is used extensively during the winters for its pungency and heat. Mothers will tell you there’s nothing better than ginger to beat a sore throat or the sniffles typically associated with the cold months. Fresh ginger is regularly used in Indian cooking, for its digestive and expectorant qualities. It is also pickled or made into chutneys. People from Andhra Pradesh make a sweet and sour Nilava Allam Pachadi (fresh ginger chutney) during the monsoon and winters, to ensure everyone in the family gets the required dose of warming ginger. This delicious chutney is eaten with dosas and idlis, and locals will tell you it is best enjoyed with warm rice and

ghee. Ginger is also candied with sugar to make a sweet and spicy treat that is served after meals as a digestive.

It is tempered along with other spices to make the base for several curries and rice dishes. Much like ginger and turmeric, it is available in the dry form all year round, but only during the cold months can one find fresh green peppercorns. It is during the winter that fresh green pepper is available in several parts of the country. Green peppercorns are as spicy as the dry black ones but they have a herby green, freshness that is lost when dried. They

All over north India, winter is the growing season for mustard and the greens cooked into sarson da saag and served with makki rotis are a much looked forward seasonal special. It is much later that the mustard fields will flower in swathes of yellow before the tender pods form and the seeds will be harvested and dried. Mustard, though used all year round, is warming and particularly beneficial during the winter. Mustard has a strong pungency that helps clear blocked sinuses and eliminate cold. Mustard has long been used in the tadka, or tempered spice mix used in many parts of the country. But no region glorifies mustard quite like Bengal. In this region, it is ground into a paste and used as a base for most curries and vegetable dishes. Mustard paste is used to make a popular dish called paturi; fish steamed with mustard paste.

Cloves and black cardamom, much like pepper, are warming spices. Clove is infused in warm water and drunk as a remedy for cough and cold. In fact most Ayurvedic cough syrups and flu tonics have clove extract. Simply chewing on the whole spice is also said to ease a cough or sore throat. Cloves are used in South Indian rasams and stews, North Indian biryanis, curries and rice dishes. Many of these spices are also combined into spice mixes, for easy use. Due to their warming qualities these spices along with peppercorns and bay leaves are also an integral part of the Indian garam masala; a spice mix which features in almost all north Indian cooking. Peppercorns, along with clove, cardamom, mace and ginger are used to make Chai Masala, the spice mix used to make masala chai. It is this spice mix that makes Indian tea so aromatic and comforting and is savored in endless cups of tea through the winter all over India. The contents of the Indian spice cupboard offer endless exploration as they go through their annual evolution. At this time of the year, when there’s a nip in the air, there is nothing more comforting than the aromas of pepper and ginger wafting through kitchens enveloping us in warmth. A piping hot bowl of meat curry or a steaming plate of aromatic biryani are perfect companions to assuage the special hunger that the winter’s cold bring.

It is a cuisine that dates back thousands of years and has been influenced by varied culinary cultures of Persia, Ottoman Empire and even India,” says Dubai-based celebrity chef Suzanne Husseini. Perhaps the most interesting part of Arabic cuisine is the mezze. Derived from the Persian word maza meaning to taste or savour, it is a selection of different appetisers served in small portions eaten during breakfast, lunch or dinner. “For someone who is trying out Arabic food for the first time I would recommend a beautiful vegetarian dish called Mousaaq’a. A lot of people know it as a Greek dish but the word Mousaaq’a originates in Arabic meaning cold. It’s meant to be cold or at room temperature.” It is made with roasted or fried egg plant and tomato sauce and is thickened with chickpeas. It can be eaten as a side dish, main course or as part of a mezze. Other prominent mezze dishes are Baba Ghanouj, an eggplant salad; Sambousek, an Arabic version of the Indian samosa; and Hummus, the everpresent Arabian delicacy made of chickpeas, tahini, yoghurt and lemon juice.

Their best-selling items are Jesheed - crumbled baby shark cooked with onion and mixed Arabic spices and Beryani - either chicken, lamb, fish or shrimps served with mix of rice and onion garnish. Change is coming slowly to Arabic food. Husseini, who is a pioneer in adding modern flavours to the cuisine, says she has kept the food authentic but added twists to it. The popular television chef and author has embellished the traditional dishes with spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, saffron and sage. She has often opted to bake or roast the key ingredients rather than frying to make it a healthier option. The changes have helped her gain the respect of Arabs who are rediscovering the dishes and has also helped her gain new converts to the cuisine.

a lifetime of work, he has built up a vast and valuable photographic archive, now housed at the Delhi Art Gallery. We bring you glimpses of the rare treasures.

In an exclusive interview, Nemai Ghosh pours his heart out: Camera came to you by chance, can you narrate the story to us? It was around 1967, I was an active theatre artist. Every evening many artists and film technician used to come to our house, they used to play cards and discuss the technicality of acting as well as cinematography and other aspects of filmmaking. Though I don’t play card, I loved to be part of the gathering so that through their knowledge I could enrich my mine. Once, one of my friend got a camera and because he did not have any interest in photography,

Know Him For 25 years, Nemai recorded almost every moment of Ray’s cinematic life. Nemai ‘s interest in photography developed quite by accident. Nemai has taken over 12,000 photographs of different plays.

I import my black and white film reel from UK, and as long as the reels are available I will use this medium only I took it from him and thus I got my first Canon camera. I began by assisting cinematographer Joy Pratap Mitra, who also used to visit us regularly. That time veteran actor Rabi Ghosh was shooting for Gupi Gyne Bagha Byne with Satyajit Ray in Birbhum. Rabi Ghosh also had his own theatre group and was a regular at our house adda. He suggested that I try my camera during their shooting sessions. So along with a few friends I went there basically to enjoy the shooting. That was the beginning to this great journey. Can you recall your first experience with the great Satyajit Ray, how you got permission to take his photographs? At first I got introduced to him through Rabi Ghosh and art director Banshi Chandragupta who mentioned that I just wanted to take some photographs during their shooting sessions and Satyajit Ray was fine with that. Day by day, I observed him and his every movements. Then once I got a chance to show him my work. And it was an incredible experience.

You have shot many legends. Who have been among your favourites? I loved to take photographs of Uttam Kumar and Saumitra Chatterjee. Though I would have loved to take photographs of Suchitra Sen, unfortunately could not take many as she was always very conscious in front of the camera. Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Rekha, have all been amazing. Chhaya Devi was an extra ordinary actress, she use to act through every part of her being; her eyes, cheeks, lips every part of the body use to have some amazing expressions. Beside film shooting is there any other activities you are also involved with? What happened to your acting in theatre? Though I went to college, and always wanted to be an actor, I discontinued acting in theatre due to many reasons. There was no time for it and also I found my solace in photography. I have been documenting some of the Indian tribes and their lands for many years.I have also spent three different seasons in Bastar, then in Madhya Pradesh and now

February 2013 82 www.spiceroutemag.com

in Chhatisgarh and Odisha. Then I have also documented a tribe in Arunachal Pradesh called the Apatani. Any memorable experience beside Satyajit Ray? After Ray’s demise, I had completely stopped taking pictures. I was in a state of trance for two years. Then I also lost one of my son. It was a very difficult time. In 1994, Michalengelo Antinioni came to Kolkata for the International Film Festival of India. He invited me in Italy to showcase my work Faces of Indian Artists, where I have showcased photographs of all the famous Indian painters like Jogen Choudhury, Paritosh Sen and many more. Those were some incredible moments, and slowly I started getting back. What is your take on the new technology such as digital camera? I don’t work on digital camera at all. Even today I import my black and white film reel from UK and as long as the reels are available I will use this medium only. There is no way I am exploring the digital medium at all.

Your view on overall education scenario of India?

Even though it may sound cliché, I would like to stress here that our strength lies with our dedicated faculties, far sighted management committee, committed employees and of course our students. We are committed to the well being of the society. We also do not believe in making a student educated but also knowledgeable. Our strength also lies with the fact that the Management understands the needs of the education and has always been very responsive to all the requirements. There is absolutely no doubt of the fact Economic development of our country is built around educational development. We need to ensure that there is cent per cent literacy and 100 per cent enrolment at primary, secondary and technical levels. People have understood the economic value of education and are now ready to invest. Thus, there is a need to explore private and other investments. It has been established beyond doubt that besides its social and cultural dimensions, education is also an economic and political investment yielding long- term benefits. It is, therefore, not only justifiable but also desirable to focus on this investment in order to gain maximum benefit.

his is the season to be jolly! Long cold walks, warm bonfires, layers of clothing and hot cuppas are all perks of basking in the winter warmth. And the celebration lasts till February, the month when the air is still pleasant and winter is just about packing up and warming up to say goodbye. But the nip in the air is indecisive and often leaves us pondering over our skincare routine. The drop in the temperature and cold winds can deprive your skin of its moisture, making it appear flaky and dry. Fret not, help is now at hand!

Doctor speak Dr Aparna Santhanam, a well-known dermatologist, cosmetologist, hair and wellness expert, and the author of the book Skin Deep suggests that we stay well-equipped to face the changing weather routines. February is the month of transition, when winter is fading. She says, “It is important to switch to a gel based cleanser or a lighter moisturizer. February is also the time when the skin has to cope with the increasing intensity of UV rays, and so everybody must apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 on any given day.” Dr Aparna insists that she treats a lot of patients with skin allergies every year during February. “Some of the common skin ailments that emerge during this season are sun allergies, mild dandruff, fungal infections, flare up of chronic conditions like eczema and psoriasis due to changing external conditions,” she quips. Also though long, hot showers and February 2013 90 www.spiceroutemag.com

Use a pack made of glycerin, sandalwood, turmeric, ground almonds and rose water once a week for hydration, exfoliation and brightening baths may beckon you in this cold season, one should also remember hot water is hard on your skin and strips it of its natural oils. Instead use lukewarm water, and keep the shower time short.

Quick tips to follow After bathing, gently dab the skin partially dry with a towel. Do not rub. Exfoliate regularly, this helps your skin to shed dead cells. Omega 3 found in fish and flax seed is vital for our skin. Stress makes way for acne, so keep it at bay. Complex carbohydrates like brown rice, oats and barley bring clarity to the skin.

It’s a common phenomenon how we get caught up with many responsibilities and in the process tend to ignore our skincare routine. Skin is the largest and most visible part of the body. A little change in weather condition or food intake often shows up in our skin condition. Our skin is perhaps the most sensitive part of our body, even an over dose of oil intake can often show up in form of acne or mild blemishes. “Fatigue too shows up as dull, sallow skin. And an illness can surface in the form of dark circles. Stress on the other hand makes way for acne and other skin conditions,” informs Dr Aparna.

Eat healthy Apart from external ointments, it’s essential we eat the right kind of food for our skin to glow. Some food groups are vital for beautiful skin. “Complex (beauty) carbohydrates like brown rice, oats, and barley bring clarity to the skin. Protein is vital for the strength, integrity and functioning of the skin. Eggs, soybean, chickpeas, sprouts and fish are all sources of good protein. seeds, and walnuts. Hence, it helps to have these in our regular diet chart. And the golden rule for all season is - drinking plenty of fluids. Keeping hydrated nourishes skin and makes it healthier and soft, so drink lots and lots of water, even if you do not feel thirsty in the winter months.

Apart from this Dr Aparna throws light on how coloured vegetables and fruits lend a youthful look and also heal the skin. These colourful veggies and fruits are full of antioxidants, they work their way through a rainbow effect and provide radiant glowing skin. A happy state of being and looking good

are all interrelated. Wellness stems from good exercise, deep breathing, yoga so taking time out for a good run or an aerobic session is a must. Also, a round of exercise will show you instant results on your skin tone. Glowing skin is an indicator of good health and of a state of wellness within as well as on the surface.

Quirky kitch art Indian souvenirs sell like hot cakes while fish shaped fridge magnets from Male are interesting keepsakes

associated with them; some also remind of the place, the time of visit, setting and of course the company! Exotic or not, a destination unfurls before the eyes the moment you look at the souvenir you got. While dusting the various souvenirs, sitting happily at different corners of the house, I cherish the time I spent somewhere. Bustling or not, quaint or not, beach or temple, a souvenir can bring back the cacophonies of the first morning or the first cuppa tea! “Indulging in souvenir shopping is such a girl thing,” a male friend says, to which I retort, “Men only indulge in buying some toddy, knives, poker sets, cards, airguns and all the destructive stuff!” True, hammocks, T-shirts, knives and key-rings make great souvenirs. Some run of the mill souvenirs include T-shirts with silly destination slogans, plastic key rings and key rings made out of conch shells. What are your favourites?

Going international

here are times when friends coax me to divulge details about my travels. To tell them if I really am a traveller and what a particular destination is famous for, what could be a better idea to bring back some souvenirs? So many questions and so little time to share all the details. So, here’s something on the keepsakes, indigenous to a particular destination, that one can bring back home and gift to their loved ones.

me what I pick as souvenirs on my travels and I would say the travel junkie in me is always excited to collect that one particular thing from the destination I have been to, is famous for. Though picking up whatever is available off the shelf is not my forte but whenever I am out somewhere, collecting souvenir becomes a habit! And sometimes the secret fetish works and I collect things in two sets, one for gifting and one for self.

There’s no rocket science involved in picking up stuff from a destination, says a colleague! But how can it not be? Every destination is a world in itself and has a plethora of richness embedded in its character. The very character of the destination is threaded in to the knick knacks, small and large, that are sold as souvenirs, intriguing enough to get the smile on the face of the receiver.

Toys happen to be my favourite souvenirs, chiefly because they add a lot of colour to the showcase they are displayed at (pun intended). There are souvenirs that go straight into that wooden chest you got from your mum. But there are some that always remain close to the heart; some have special memories

Do you, like many others, have this habit of buying souvenirs and shoving them at the back of your closets or kitchen cabinets? If yes, then I would suggest invest in souvenirs that have longer shelf life or the ones that can add some value to your or the recievers households. Fridge magnets are mostly indigenous to foreign locations. So, if you are travelling to Dubai or Colombo, Male or Kathmandu, picking up fridge magnets would sound a reasonable idea, and cheaper one at that. From Colombo, picking up some Ceylon tea or tribal masks would be a great idea. And Dubai, we all know is a shopper’s paradise! Hoarding the Dubai Duty Free is a sane idea for many, but if you want to bring home the real flavour of Dubai then head to the Old Dubai area where you can shop for some exotic spices and perfumes. And both these products have

on the recipients’ personal favourites, you can pick these up! If the recipient likes beverages, choose coffee beans from Coorg or Munnar, alternatively you may also pick Makaibari green tea or other artisticaly blended teas from Darjeeling or Assam. These, as well as local herbal teas, are light, easily packable and inexpensive souvenirs. Chilli fans appreciate new types of dried peppers and small bottles of sauce. Packing a sheet or two of bubble wrap ensures extra protection for fragile souvenirs. Foods such as cookies, cakes, sweets and snacks unique to your location are all good choices, if they are not similar to those you can buy at home. Plan to gift something to a woman? Chikan sarees or dress material from Lucknow, without forgetting the delectable Tunde kebabs would perhaps be the best option. Perfumes coming in tiny little bottles (ittars) from UP, colourful mojaris from Punjab, Kantha sarees from Kolkata, conch shell jewellery from Goa, vibrant Madhubani paintings from Bihar or silver filigree from Orrisa, all these souvenirs are sure to make all your ladies friends or family members happy. South India offers a different array of souvenirs, the ones that have an ethnic element to it. Choose a colorful hand-painted dance mask, or an intricate wood carving, a vivid South Indian silk saree or exquisite temple jewellery. These and other handicrafts are widely available in both local markets, of course you will have to haggle over prices.

If you are a foreign national travelling to India, you would be surprised to see the kind of variety of souvenirs each city and state has to offer. Our country is a great place to indulge in shopping, so make sure your pockets are loaded. From Kondapalli toys from Andhra Pradesh to the tie and dye fabric from Rajasthan, tribal art from Bastar in Chattisgarh to filter coffee from Tamil Nadu, every region in the country offers an eclectic mix of knick knacks and souvenirs. While travelling to the North East of India, visitors can even purchase bamboo baskets, place mats, and other woven items for kitchen and home use. Decorative replicas of costumed ceremonial figures, Bodo weave fabric, wood and bamboo handicrafts. Mekhla Chador (traditional Assamese saree) and ceremonial masks also make for a giftable souvenir. Bring home samples of all your travels, bring home memories and cherish them later !

these even on walls. So, get creative people! Think Kathmandu and vibrant images of apple cheeked kids and the cultural life of Nepal appear in front of eyes. The beautiful capital city of Nepal is famous for its Thangka paintings, gorgeous rugs and eye-catching masks. If you are keen on going trekking in Nepal, there’s a gamut of trekking gear that is available here in Kathmandu. There’s no dearth of inventive souvenir ideas, calculate available room inside your suitcases, so that you don’t exceed your travelling weight limit.

decade ago along with three friends from his alma mater, the Indian Statistical Institute. After moving to England, Ray discussed about Vidyapith with his friends and the need to give something back to their community in India. He firmly believed that education was the answer to fighting poverty in West Bengal, the state where he grew up. He contemplated setting up a Trust which would strive to enhance educational opportunities for the poor in the state. Ray feels lack of education robs thousands of youngsters the freedom to choose the kind of life they want. “It closes many doors that otherwise may have been open. This loss of potential is suffered not only by the individual but it also affects a country’s social and economic development,” he says.

Vidyapith aims to empower local communities through education and equip them so they can pursue a sustainable future

Ray along with Dr Anindya Bhattacharya of the University of York, Dr Chirantan Ganguly of Queen’s University and Dr Anirban Kar of Delhi School of Economics formed Vidyapith in 2005. He informed, “The aim of Vidyapith is to empower local communities through education and equip them so that they can pursue a more prosperous and sustainable future. Vidyapith, so far raised and donated around Rs 55 lakhs to 76 schools in 10 districts of West Bengal, namely: North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Burdwan, Bankura, Birbhum, Malda, Jalpaiguri, Kolkata and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.” Vidyapith has been the harbinger of change. The organisation has helped many schools with benches, tables, chairs, vocational tools, desks, school bags, uniforms, books and furniture. The funds have also helped to provide drinking water and build book banks, libraries, school buildings, toilets, sheds, tubewells, cycle stands and laboratories.

Benefactor of help Schools that benefitted from the help of Vidyapith are numerous. Barapalason Girls’ High School and Bholanath Vidyapith in Burdwan received new benches, tables and

chairs while Karkai Ramakrishna Vivekananda School in West Midnapore got a new building and a book bank. Blackboards, tables and chairs were donated to Sarada Vidyapith in Sonarpur, and a library was built for Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Vidyamandir in Malda. Benches, tables and fans were procured for Malancha High School, North 24-Parganas and drinking water provided to the Shamayita Convent School, Bankura. When asked how he zeroes in on the schools that need help, Ray says “I have built a February 2013 104 www.spiceroutemag.com

wide network of friends and contacts in West Bengal over the past decade. And I count the schoolteachers as my friends. These contacts send me names of schools that are in dire need of funds.” If the organisation is convinced that the needs are genuine and if volunteers are found who can supervise the renovation work in the schools and take responsibility for buying school supplies, funds are released. Sometimes, donors also approach the organisation with requests for helping schools.

Support system Vidyapith could not have come so far if the fellow trustees and founder-members, donors and Ray’s wife, Diya, hadn’t lent him a helping hand. According to Diya and Ray, there are many ways one can get involved in Vidyapith’s activities from volunteering to donating. Interested readers can log on to Vidyapith’s

Vidyapith has touched the lives of hundreds of children in the poorest communities, but Ray’s ultimate dream is to see every child in school. He wants Vidyapith to be remembered as a small charity striving to bring about lasting changes in education.

itting beside me as I watch the daily dose of entertainment from Cartoon Network, Taruwar Singh jumps up to the PC and shows me how exactly an animation gets made. All this at the age of 11; I was impressed by the little boy only to know that he was taught animation at school by a visiting faculty during his winter vacations. Amazing considering when I went to school things were different. Of course we did have a finer (if we may call it so) and a harsher approach to studies and rank system was in vogue unlike the grading system prevalent now. But as a mother of two school going boys, I can vouch for the fact that the kids of today are way more mature, thanks to the new age classrooms - the smart classrooms.

Learning edge New schools are no more a place that you go with a bagful of books for attending classes on variety of subjects, and come back to loads of homework, or to learn a particular subject by rote for an exam to follow. Kids go to school that have air-conditioned rooms, buses, classrooms with audio-visual methods of teaching. Computers in schools now are a part and parcel of the day-to-day teaching. Add to it the facilities of a dedicated website for daily updates, classroom activities, making announcements, posting pictures related to school activities, attendance of the ward, or even addressing issues related to every child with the help of individual login name and password. The advantage lies in the fact that it helps me as a mother to trace the child’s activities at school and even know what he has for homework or a pending exam, much to the chagrin of the child of course. Classrooms have moved on from a chalk February 2013 116 www.spiceroutemag.com

narrator gets rewarded. It certainly helps shy children speak up and communicate better. My son tells me how they would be watching Tom & Jerry or other cartoon shows during break or their free classes as a way to unwind in between classes.

Carving a niche History lessons are no more filled of sighs and yawns. Children at the Heritage School are taken out on historical tours which could be in the form of heritage walks or by way of taking students on a sightseeing tour to places of historical importance. They are taken on a round of the many baolis in and around Delhi, which were built as part of the Mughal rule-indeed a good way to tell the kids the significance of the past. Such visits help to etch the facts and figures related to that particular monument in a much better fashion and for a longer duration.

Classrooms have moved on from chalk and blackboard to a more interactive session where technology reigns and blackboard story to a more interactive session where technology plays a major role. My son tells me that his science class includes not just what’s there in books but the teacher explains the concept through powerpoint presentations and through an audio visual medium making the concept downright clear. When I struggle making a presentation, its my 4th grader Ishaan Singh who can make one faster than I can imagine. Subjects like Mathematics are taught in an interactive way and supposedly more methodical way by a new system termed Jodo Gyan and apart from teaching students by this method, the school also arranges for special classes for parents so that they too are aware of the new methodology. English classes are made interesting by having show-n-tell sessions where children narrate poems written by them with the help of a prop even as the best February 2013 118 www.spiceroutemag.com

Elaborating on the concept of Smart Classrooms, The Heritage School Desk said, “At The Heritage School our pedagogy is to reinforce education with learning. Students learn with techniques hands-on. It is vital for students to know what everything that they learn about, looks like, feels like in real life. Hence we at the school, have a balance between use of technology and real life. The balance is critical for the educators, students

and the school on the whole. We during our regular classes expose our children to knowledge through boards, cards, books, projectors and computer labs. The teachers use technology extensively to research and make lesson plans.” The applications and technology that teachers have at their disbursal is immense. However a vital part of any smart classroom is the educator. The classroom can be made very intelligent but the dialogue, the conversation and the learning that happens through that is the essence of imparting education. Exchange of thoughts is imperative for sound learning. And so is extending that by hands-on experience for any subject matter. “During the implementation of the lesson plans in our classrooms, we prefer to bring the right environment in. If we are able to bring the world into the classroom, great! Else we take our children out to experience everything in their vicinity,” the school’s desk informs. Another innovative subject is EVS-- a short for Environment Science. February 2013 120 www.spiceroutemag.com

In our times it was just science. This subject draws a child’s interest towards everything that exists in an environment by way of involving the child in an interactive manner whether it is about the growth of a plant to showcasing how rain happens, or how rainbows are formed. A child learns in a more comprehensive and illustrative way the nuances of daily science. Lessons in Geography are made easier by way of practical lessons in astronomy or an occasional visit to the Nehru Planetarium where one gets acquainted with the concept of the solar system. Making a 3D model of the solar system, parts of the human body, the life cycle system in plants/animals for a better understanding of the subject is in vogue. Change as they say is the only constant. The day is not far when children would come to the classrooms with their personal laptops like they do in the West. The aim of smart classrooms is to make kids smarter and today’s kids are no doubt very smart. I agree of course. Don’t you.

Madhya Pradesh woos with wildlife, heritage and history The heart of India, Madhya Pradesh has created a landmark in tourism with its multiple treasures.

T

his heart of India is full of treasures ranging from wildlife, heritage and plenty of history. From the marble rocks in Jabalpur to the rock paintings of Bhimbetka and the romantic settings of Mandu, the state has something for every traveller. While the national Parks of Bandhavgarh and Kanha too are favourites of wildlife enthusiasts from across the world.

Orchha Orchha located on the banks of the Betwa River, is a relatively

peaceful place, full of well preserved palaces and temples, with a distinctly medieval charm. Three main palaces are enclosed in Orchha’s fortified walls. The Jahangir Mahal is the largest and most impressive, and its upper levels offer some arresting panoramic views of the area around. Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput chieftain Rudra Pratap who chose this stretch as an ideal site for his capital.

Jabalpur Located just 23 km from Jabalpur are the marble rocks at Bhedaghat village. The limestone walls rise to a hundred feet on either side of the river Narmada. It is said, the beautiful stream of the holy river seems transformed into a sheet of molten silver and the limestone rocks into pillars to heaven on a full moon night.

Bhimbetka The Bhimbetka rock shelters spread over 10 km in length and about 3 km in width with over

700 rock shelters, of which over 400 have prominent paintings. Of particular interest to the tourist are the Auditorium Rock Shelter, Zoo Rock and Boar Rock in the Bhimbetka cluster. Sandhiya Mehhta Numerologist and Vastu Consultant

Activate Third eye spiritual Power to see all about your life

4 + 3 + 2=9 How to calculate your d-o-b for e.g. 13-3-1982 (ruling no is 4 and controlling no. is 9) Both the ruling and controlling is connected with planet and energy. Most of the time your ruling number and controlling number not agreeing with each other, and also some numbers are missing in your numeric chart create lots of problem and imbalance in your life. Related, Money, Success, Health etc.Your d-o-b e.g 13-3-1982 in this you are missing 4, 9, 7, 6 that creates Imbalance and you are not getting the power of this nos. It is completely research by Sandhiya Mehhta this numeric graph. Due to your past birth karma this Birth Graph.

How much you get? Very low and Hard work

In this chart you are imbalance though you are hardworking, Intelligent still not getting power of missing nos. energies, we have to balance this graph that is what Sandhiya Mehta does with her godly power and making people to live life with all success and power in balance way. IMP-only stone, name spelling, mantra, or fasting cannot change your destiny; you have to follow the scientific, successful method to live successful life in all fields. SANDHIYA MEHHTA has spiritual power of lord Shiva. Using that spiritual power she is able to fill the graph and once the graph is balanced, It has to give you success. She has got 99.99% success in her work. Her finding show that nearly 70% people in this world are born with number 4 & 8 and it is world known fact that these numbers can give you a lot of sorrows, disappointments, hurdle, postponements, and make your life unbalanced as compared to other numbers. Her talent is tremendously vast and to top it up her presence is having a charisma of saint and her efforts have made her the most successful business tycoons, the Royal families of past Kings and Queens. The powerful politicians, The entertaining stars. The healing doctors, The hard working sportsman, so dues the common man!!!!!! “I don't ask you to change your life. I ask you to live it with all you that you want.”

SANDHIYA MEHHTA research in numerology and her god gifted power says that numerology is 100% is connected with our business and career. As per your d-o-b your ruling and destiny number also your missing number (in d-o-b) and your career line decide about your business and career whether you flourish or doing moderate or not to get success. Your missing number that is connected with planet and energy instead of giving you rising will pull you back and all your efforts and knowledge can go in a vain. Particularly year as per you d-o-b is deciding about your career change, promotion, new ventures alone or with partnership can guide you (like what 2013 says about you specially for career and business) Name of your own company, organization is very important to generate good energy.

As per my experience and calculation no. 4and 8 and 8 are more the best couple in marriage life as they understand each other very well particularly in bad time or when things are not going smooth in some life span, no. 2 and 2 again have the same problem of disturb marriage life, either they go for breakage or have each other free to live and adjust well with each other when no. 3 or 9 or 1, 2 appear. Numerology calculation will be good guide to help the two individuals to understand each other in a better way and each other's approach towards life and abilities, capacities like and dislikes. If this is not there is hardly any possibility the two can stay together happily. Q) What about no. D.O.B. 1,9,5,3 But not getting successes.? Ans: All these are also powerful numbers but if they don’t get the support of fortune No. or some number which is connected with particular planet. If energy numbers are missing then having all Nos. like 1,9,5,3 in their DOB also won’t give the best result in person’s life. This number are supposed to get full of success, name, fame in there life. but why they also have problems & not success in there life? you can also have this problem in your life. Take guidance to rectify & get success. Q) What about birth dates 4 and 8 in which you are specialized? Ans: Yes they are more liable to troubles, hardships. I guide how they alter their ill luck or delays, disappointments and sorrows and take full force of advantages of their number by choosing proper numbers and some numeric values engraved pendants of specific metal. Q) How far you have got success in numerological advice and remedies that you give? Ans: 99.9% success in their in my cliental list. The rest is in the hands of universal energy.
