A scene from the musical ‘Flight’ showcasing SpiceJet crew, staged in Delhi NCR to commemorate 10 fabulous years of SpiceJet.
FROM THE COO’S DESK
Dear SpiceJet customer, This issue is a very special issue: It continues our commemoration of 10 years of flying as celebrated through the hosting last month of a unique SpiceJet musical ‘Flight’ for staff and invited guests, and it introduced our new brand slogan: Red. Hot. Spicy. Why suffer the boredom of the blues when you can choose Red? And not just any red - The Red Hot Spicy Red. The airline with a difference! The airline that is in tune with the new way of thinking, the new way of flying. And the airline that continues to offer the most innovations along with the lowest fares. At the celebration event we also launched our sleek new mobile app for Android and iOS systems, which can be downloaded using the keyword ‘SpiceJet’ from the Google and Apple stores, respectively. In the month of May 2015 (the latest month for which we have official DGCA statistics), SpiceJet achieved a 93% load factor (i.e., 93% of its seats on average were filled), a record for the Indian aviation industry. This comes on the heels of a profitable quarter ending March 2015, and is another strong sign of SpiceJet’s emerging financial turnaround. As of this month, we will
be increasing our daily flights to ~260 per day. Our market share is growing again. The new flights we are adding are a combination of increasing frequency on our existing routes, and some new routes, for example, JaipurUdaipur and Jabalpur-Hyderabad. We have resumed hiring and are on a growth trajectory once again, tapping into the huge growth in the market that we ourselves helped catalyse through our innovative pricing and promotions. On June 21, the occasion of the first ever International Day of Yoga, SpiceJet crew, in conjunction with 50 dedicated Isha Foundation yoga instructors, who were specially trained to perform Upa Yoga, undertook 10 minute interactive yoga sessions on-board select flights across the SpiceJet network. This is believed to be a first for any airline worldwide, and was widely appreciated by passengers. In addition to the in-flight activities, several hundred Isha Foundation volunteers also performed a simple form of yoga, ‘Namaskar Mudra’, along with staff at SpiceJet checkin counters and boarding gates at select airports. Yet another example of SpiceJet being an airline with a difference! Read more about this on page 132. One question that we are often asked by the media is whether airfares in India need to be regulated. Should there be a lowest and highest fare level set? Our answer to that question is simple: Regulation of pricing in a free market with multiple players does not work. It creates all kinds of distortions that eventually lead to undesirable outcomes and ultimately higher fares for consumers. There may be a few rare occasions in peak season when fares, especially
last minute fares, may spike, but that is simple a function of demand and supply. If you cap fares, you will have shortages as all seats will sell out well in advance. That is surely a less attractive outcome for those who need to travel at a short notice. On the opposite end of the spectrum, setting minimum fares will just reduce revenues for the airlines while depriving customers of benefiting from some unbelievable deals. This is because the very lowest fares are offered only for those seats that would otherwise go empty. An empty seat is zero revenue for the airline. Set minimum fares and you prevent the airline from selling those empty seats, and you prevent customers willing to plan early, from getting access to those seats. A poor outcome for all stakeholders. Airline revenue management is complex, is driven fundamentally by demand and supply for a perishable product in a highly competitive market, and is not something that can be optimised through regulation. The free market pricing is working. It is resulting in some of the lowest average airfares in the world in an extremely pricesensitive market, driving India to record growth in passenger numbers, improving industry performance, and is helping boost the overall economy through the economic multiplier effect. Thank you for flying SpiceJet and supporting us through the years. I wish you a wonderful flight.

isiting a hill-station is a spiritual proposition, a movement of the body and soul together through pathways and meandering passages into the lap of nature.
It is a kind of waking up from the forgetful slumber that busy lives in cities have become Almora falls among the southern districts of the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand and also the oldest. Easily accessible, the extension of NH87 connects it to Kathgodam, the nearest railway station. Once you reach Almora, you find the town buzzing with people and activity. brochures of hotels, guides for hire and horses for riding. In fact, if you go there as a tourist, chances are you won’t be noticed at all, until you ask for a place to stay. That’s the first thing you learn about the character of this cultural pot of Kumaon. Nobody cares (bothers or gets bothered). Maybe that’s why it was once flooded with academicians, intellectuals, poets and musicmaking and peace-loving hippies.
Almora is almost 360 km from Delhi. Being a SpiceJet hub, Delhi is connected to all cities in India, and abroad. Log on to www. spicejet.com for more.
KASAR DEVI
Almora can be divided into two parts, the town and the two diametrically opposite sides of a junkie ridge. The town offers markets, some old buildings, some eating joints, all unique in their own style. But the other side of Almora is more attractive, where everything is a signature of singularity. Eight km and 1,500 ft above the town, on one side of the ridge, is a place called Kasar Devi. Culturally, Kasar Devi is a famous ancient temple located on a hill top. But with the cult hippie movement in the 1970s, an inmigration made the place popular among hippies who followed their predecessors- creative stalwarts, like Swami Vivekanand (Vedanta), Lama Angarika Govinda (Buddhism), Rabindranath Tagore (Mysticism), Bob Dylan (Country Folk), etc.

Mohan’s Café offers a quiet rural European setting. Besides pastas, home made pizzas and lasagne, it serves traditional Middle Eastern hummus with Israeli breakfast at affordable rates. Due to more tourists pouring in, a small but diverse stack of books are on display in the public library here. It has books in English, Hebrew, German, French and Russian that Mohan Rayal, the owner, has collected over a period of 17 years. There is even a village homestay programme. People keen on digging deeper into the life in the countryside enroll in their ‘Village and Jungle Walk’ programme. The 11-day, 12 nights affair is popular among foreign tourists.
DRIKUNG BUDDHIST MONASTERY
A few hundred metres from the Kasar Devi temple towards a beaten road on the left is a beautiful Buddhist monastery of the Drikung order. Tibetan refugees have a segment of their own and this is their local place of worship. Around the monastery are also their residential settlements. The German poet and painter Ernst Hoffman reached this place in the late 1930s in the guise of Lama Anagarika Govinda, in pursuit of Buddhist studies, and set up an ashram near the monastery. Today a stupa, dedicated to him, stands in the backyard of the monastery. The interior of the monastery is as attractive and enigmatic as others throughout the world, but due to its extremely low-key profile not many people know about this place, hence the quietude it offers is unparalleled.
PETSHALI MUSEUM
On the road to Jageshwar in the north east, is an extremely low-key museum of local artefacts. Located in the Petshal village, the museum is managed and started by Kumaoni poet Jugal Kishor Petshali. Petshali is an expert on Kumaoni arts, folklore July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Petshali Museum has a huge collection of handwritten manuscripts and music, and put his collection on display in 2003. It has a huge compilation of handwritten manuscripts. A copy of the Constitution of India signed by all the members of the drafting committee, handwritten manuscripts of Kumaoni literature, including some administrative decisions made under the British government are its highlights. The most striking one is from 1843 wherein the then British commissioner had announced a decision on the conflicting interests of the priests in Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines. There is also an enormous collection of traditional Kumaoni musical instruments from around the area, like damuanagar (percussion), mashakbeen (bagpipe), iktara, dotara, pipri, etc. A trip to Almora can be just another tourist-hill station interaction, or something beyond that. At Aahana – The Corbett Wilderness, one forms a unison with nature and finds all the essentials to breathe a new life into oneself. In the lush Patlidun valley, lies this ecofriendly luxury resort approximately seven kilometres from Ramnagar. Aahana touches the forests of Jim Corbett National Park all along its entire length on the north-eastern boundary. The Khara Gate of the Jhirna Range of Corbett Tiger Reserve is in close proximity to the resort.
BE ONE WITH NATURE
As the name suggests, Aahana, meaning the first rays of the rising
sun, this eco-friendly sprawling haven of 11 acres shines bright in the golden gleams of the sun and bestows serenity and solace to all the peace-loving souls residing here. The entire property has been landscaped with forest species and grass to provide extended space to wildlife. Furthermore, it is a habitat of about 100 odd species of birds, such as rock pigeons, spotted doves, red wattled lapwing, red vented, red whiskered, black crested bulbuls, common house sparrows, long tailed shrikes, rufous tree pie, coucal, scaly breasted munia, common myna, golden orioles,

And if you are lucky, wild elephants, jackals, deer, and occasionally the wild boar can pay a visit while you are sunbathing in the pool or sipping a cup of coffee at the restaurant. The resort is famous for its well organised nature trails where we visit the organic garden, followed by the Calandra bushes which bear flowers which resemble the traditional rakhi. Walking further you see the Malu Bael, a plant whose leaves resemble the foot of a camel. The plant attracts a wide number of sunbirds and spider hunters, finches and buntings. The main gate houses thick bushes of bamboo trees full of chirping sparrows. The early morning nature walks outside the resort are a delight as well because the road is surrounded by lush green salubrious forest of Corbett National Park, where about 137 species of trees, 58 species of herbs and 27 species of climbers, grass and bamboo can be witnessed, a sight in itself.

This eco-friendly concept makes the resort different from others and stands true to its 'green' commitment. The water from the bathrooms and kitchen is treated through Cannae root zone system and results in recycled clean water. ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION
Originated in Central and South America, it is named after the capital city of French Guiana, ‘Cayenne’. Hot and spicy, Cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a member of the Capsicum family of vegetables, commonly known as chilli peppers. Initially used for decoration, its usefulness expanded into medicinal and culinary areas. It is now one of the important commercial crops in India, Pakistan, China, Argentina and the USA.
HISTORICAL REFERENCE
56
First described by a doctor travelling with Christopher Columbus, Cayenne is now popular in worldwide cuisine, and for use in soothing preparations for conditions such as arthritis, as an aid to digestion and to strengthen blood vessels. This spicy pod was introduced to the rest of the world, especially in the Indian subcontinent, by Spanish and Portuguese explorers during 16th and 17th centuries.
CULINARY USES
Cayenne goes perfect with plenty of dishes. Whether you are grilling, marinating, boiling, baking, frying or simply making a salad, adding Cayenne makes the particular meal both interesting and healthenhancing. Cayenne is used extensively in a great number of curries and in other Indian dishes. In European cooking, Cayenne pepper is often added to cheese or egg dishes for a hint of exotic spice and can often turn plain dishes into hot and exciting dishes. It attains an average height of 2ft, although some African varieties are known to be smaller. The podlike berries acquire various colours, shapes and sizes. However, the cayenne berries are generally slender and small, and turn red to yellow when ripe. Such plants thrive in hot temperatures.

POP GOES THE RESTAURANT!
With gourmets eager to experiment, temporary restaurants, aka Pop-ups, are surfacing just about anywhere nowadays. WO RDS | MINI RI BEIRO

estaurants today are appearing anywhere - in living rooms, at stores, or at any out-of-the-ordinary venue. Pop-ups are suddenly fashionable and people are loving these as long as the place is quirky, the food good or the chef behind it, a big name.
And because these exist for a short while, people throng to these in droves. The venue of the Pop-ups is a big draw as people are done with July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
fancy restaurants and now seek fun, dining places. But, of course, a section of an existing restaurant, transformed into an exciting Pop-up works too. Chef Vicky Ratnani, who has done several Pop-ups abroad, was part of one, recently in a South Mumbai home. Transforming the existing place is key, according to him. “The size of the place really does not matter,” he quips.
FOOD CENTRIC
Some years ago, when Olive Bar & Restaurant, Mumbai, played host to Mariketty Grana’s Greek Taverna
in Goa, Thalassa, the place was transformed completely. Yet, it was undoubtedly, the food, which was the raison d’etre for people to try this. The courtyard space at Olive Mahalaxmi got new design elements, but the food served was purely from the extensive Thalassa Pop-Up menu. From Prawns Saganak to Grilled Halloumi cheese, and Greek pizza to the famous Greek Pita Souvlaki Wraps, everything was from the Thalassa menu. The Guppy Pop-up, helmed by Chef Vikram Khatri, showcased his modern day interpretation on Japanese techniques and flavours. Again, food was the mainstay. Mumbai’s underground kitchen club, Turning Tables, started by Kanika Parab and Mansi Poddar, too focusses on food. is a reputed chef. When House of Tales, Colaba, hosted a Pop-up of Ritu Dalmia’s Diva, the attraction was to savour food cooked by her. Gaggan Anand’s Pop-up with Cellar Door Hospitality in Delhi and Mumbai, was a sell-out as well. Interestingly, for these big names, gourmets are ready to pay any price. However, Pop-up meals are generally priced anything between `1,000 -3,000 per meal. Five star hotels too have their fair share of Pop-ups. JW Marriott Juhu, Mumbai, recently teamed up with 4XFOUR to offer a series of limited-time, Pop-up dining experiences, with some of Europe's best Michelin-starred chefs at Mezzo-Mezzo. Big names may be a draw, but to most gourmets, the quality of food matters. As long as the food served is of high quality and unusual, they are not really fussed about the Chef’s name. Arun Kumar’s winter Pop-up Ammi in Delhi is a perfect example.

Goma, meaning sesame in Japanese, an initiative by Nandini Sood and Anupama Bhat in Delhi, which focusses, on Japanese-Korean fare, too bears testimony to this. While most of these Pop-ups may be well-organised with a famous chef in tow, there is an endearing, amateurish quality to the service and setting. And that’s how people prefer it. Diners come in purely by word-of mouth publicity and the organisers are happy as they only look at about 10-20 people depending upon the space. What makes these Pop-ups even more fun is that one is sharing tables with complete strangers and often friendships are struck, by the time the meal is over. At times, organisers go the extra mile to make the experience worthwhile for diners. Performance readings, stand-up comedy & art installations are added attractions.

cannot afford a restaurant space, choose to experiment through these Pop-ups. In India, it is sometimes done to give a boring place a boost. At times, Pop-ups are a great avenue to test-market a new concept. Again, a visiting chef can be the reason to initiate a Pop-up. Chef Vicky Ratnani opines that such cross-overs enable people to sample the cuisine of other chefs. “These help to promote talent and offer variety to diners,” he adds.
EXPERIMENTAL CHEFS
Chefs too are loving this Pop-up concept of ad-hoc restaurants. It offers them an opportunity to experiment and step out of their comfort zones. Working in someone else’s kitchen with minimalistic appliances and help, is often
exciting, as well as challenging. An assistant, ingredients and his capability, are all that the chef brings with him as he enters the portals of a new kitchen. Fresh, local ingredients and an out-of-thebox menu, help them 'wow' their customers’ palates. Delhi and Mumbai may be home to these Pop-ups, but other cities are catching up too. M.R. Nishanth in Chennai, recently launched CFG Diner’s Club, a supper club that provides ‘exclusive’ dining experiences for members in restaurants in and around Chennai, that include barbecues on the beach, biryani evenings et al. Supper clubs or underground restaurants, these Pop-ups constantly change. And that’s what keeps gourmets excited.

Nowadays spas are taking a holistic approach to wellness with nutritious organic food, one can look forward to remedies and cures for body ailments. The rooms are compact, minimalist in decor and offer a lot of natural light unlike modern spas that thrive on modern lighting arrangements. The traditional wooden table imparts the perfect set-up for authentic ayurvedic sessions. The aroma in the room, as you enter, tells you the whole story and rest is all a blissful experience. There are many options available for wellness and ayurvedic massages. But before that, a session with an ayurvedic doctor present in-house can give you a deep insight about your body. He prescribes medicines and guides you towards a perfect way of life and even suggests which therapy to go for even if you are staying for a day.

OFFERING HOLISTIC CARE
Childhood cancers have a high success rate, provided the kids are supported by an infection-free and cheerful environment along with timely treatment. St. Judes offers this opportunity to every child patient irrespective of their economic status.
N
ihal Kaviratne returned to India in 2005 after spending 22 years abroad in various countries with Unilever. He retired as the senior vice president of Unilever. He and his wife, Shyama Kaviratne, were touched by the children sleeping on the footpath opposite Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. Affordable lodging was the main challenge for families of patients.
July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Many families, dejected with the difficulties of such a life, seeing their child suffer and facing joblessness while in Mumbai for treatment, often abandon the treatment midway.
People coming from small towns and villages prefer to go back to their villages where their child might live for a few months, but die in dignity, in the comfort of their home. Such abandonment of treatment is one of the biggest causes of mortality in these young patients. The pathos of this situation struck the Kaviratnes and they decided to work towards creating a temporary shelter for

CHANGING LIVES
92
Five-year-old Minaz Shaikh came to the St. Judes centre in Lower Parel on November 27, 2012, along with her parents, when she was diagnosed with B Cell-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. When Minaz was admitted to St. Judes, her condition was weak and highly unstable. An introvert by nature, Minaz preferred to stay with her parents in her unit. Soon after her admission to St. Judes, things began to brighten up for her. Her positive prognosis by the doctors coupled with extremely supportive conditioning at St. Judes had a significant impact on her health. The regular and healthy meals cooked by her mother helped stabilise her body’s immune system and strengthened her body to take in the aggressive treatment. Within a period of four months, Minaz moved to her 4th session of chemotherapy steadily. Gradually, she opened up to the various activities available at the centre and proved to be a sharp learner.

children suffering from cancer. The centres they established offer, at no cost, the dignity of a caring and respectable atmosphere in which young cancer patients could recuperate peacefully and their parents could find emotional support. It was named after St Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes.
UNDERSTANDING THE NEED
Childhood cancers have a high possibility of being easily cured but medical treatment needs to be supported with an infection-free, positive environment and proper nourishment. The treatment may last as long as two years, but the child is not hospitalised throughout this period. The very realisation that one's child is suffering from cancer causes enormous trauma to parents. For those living in rural areas, the problem is compounded by their financial straits and the fact that they have to come to the big city, where they know no one, for treatment, and it is in such cities July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Cancer is a single word that carries with it the finality of a sentence that is long-lasting. that the treatment is available at low or zero cost. People visit these big cities having sold their land, cattle or any other valuable asset with the urge to do everything they can for the sake of their sick child. Living on the street, amid unhygienic conditions, render the ailing susceptible to bacterial infections since their immune systems are already low following chemotherapy. Often, such patients succumb to pneumonia and tuberculosis. Thus, the objective is to provide appropriate accommodation to these families.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
To find a place close to prominent cancer hospitals that is a home for children was the biggest challenge.

In Mumbai, Nihal met Julio Ribeiro, the former police commissioner of Mumbai, who was also the chairman of the Bombay Mothers and Children Welfare Society. Mr Ribeiro offered about 1,200 sq ft of space in the BDD (Bombay Development Directorate) chawl at Parel. This was a big help to start the organisation where the first centre was started with just 11 family units. The Kaviratnes put together a core team of 16 people, family friends whose commitment to the cause was beyond doubt and who had to enrich the team with specialised skill, in accountancy, medicine, law, etc.
CURRENT SCENARIO
From April 2006 to June 2015, the organisation has grown multifold. Till date, more than 5,000 children have been admitted to these centres. St. Judes currently runs 18 Child Care Centres with 220 family units in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Jaipur. Every Child Care Centre provides the following facilities to families free of cost: ○ Housing and nutritional support ○ Transportation to and from the hospital ○ Counselling for the family and new skills for income generation ○ Educational and recreational activities
○ Art-based therapy, music therapy and Yoga
MOVING AHEAD
In July 2015, Premashraya, the hostel for patients attached to Kolkata's Tata Medical Centre is going to be inaugurated. This will eventually house two St. Judes centres for 50 children and their families. Mumbai Port Trust has recently handed over three disused buildings to Tata Memorial Centre to house patients. The hospital, in turn, has offered these buildings to St. Judes to create 14 centres with 165 family units. They plan to strengthen and refurbish these buildings by early 2016. The dream is to have 1,000 units by 2020.
THE FOUNDERS Nihal Kaviratnne pursues a keen interest in good corporate governance and corporate social responsibility, developing models for replication by others. Shyama Kaviratne helps manage the organisation and day-to-day running of the Centres. July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com

The curious case of 4 & 8
“In my research, nearly 70% people are connected to these numbers. And once you enter the circle, these numbers will keep you in their loop for generations.” One usually guards themselves because we have all heard a lot about disappointments and delays, sorrows and hardships of 4 & 8 and even 7. But I see them powerful steroids, to be handled carefully, and with the help of my numerology you may be closer to understand how to deal with 4 & 8 in your life. Then channelize it to positive planning and maximise your fortune’s profits. Feel blessed if you belong to them, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did.
Is life simpler without 4 & 8: The other side of the story.
Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it cannot do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and de tangle the web to create a free way for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations but we are in the race of ordinary if we just sit back and give up. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, that help themselves and in addition help their families, society, help someone in need who looks unto you. “We have seen the sunrise, but to feel the warmth of it we have to wake up every day.” And every one of us should strive to be more than what we can be, I do so, so should you. And let My Numerology help you and prepare you for this serene but extraordinary life.
The Success road ahead.
There is a Buddhist saying, “You yourself must strive; the Buddha’s just point the way.” There are no criteria to evaluate what the results of the remedies are; I just believe in helping who believe in the power of universe. If you believe in yourself and the universe let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no desired time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, ever-glorious and a good part of our society & I continue to achieve results with all my clients."-Sandhiya Mehhta.

mbark on a literary wanderlust, journeying from place to place, and even out in space, if possible. It’s time to pick up a book again, leaf through the pages and run your fingers across the letters and keep those digital devices aside for some time.
You may come across irritating travel companions, but books don’t disturb you like that; they incite you, excite you and offer a whole new world And even if you’re travelling at 30,000 feet above sea level in a pristine air-conditioned environment or awaiting that boarding call at the airport, these books will have you sweating in the imaginary heat, traipsing through squishy marshlands of Sundarbans, digging into delicious Italian fare in Tuscany and even acquainting oneself with the residents of far away destinations. THE GREAT RAILWAY BAZAAR by Paul Theroux Not many of us may be like Sheldon Cooper, true locomotive fans, but many a wise people will tell you how railways tend to offer much fodder for spinning stories. In this book, Paul Theroux traces his 1973 journey across Asia hopping from train to train, punctuating a few with air travel. From London to Europe in the Orient Express, across the Middle East, charting serpentine journeys through India; and Southeast Asia, and capping it with a trip on the exotic Trans-Siberian Railway.
CITY OF DJINNS by William Dalrymple A must-read book when it comes to Delhi, City of Djinns unravels the stories behind the existence of the nation’s capital, and Dalrymple helps peel the layers off one at a time. Talking of its Mughal heritage to its British charm, Sufi mystics to musicians, this book paints a rich portrait of the city, its history and its defiant legacy.
THE HUNGRY TIDE by Amitav Ghosh
AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS by Jules Verne
This powerful story delves into the deeper waters of the Sundarbans in India, a large marshy mangrove region between India and Bangladesh. Consisting of a maze of tiny islands, crocodile-infested waters, tigers and a rich flora and fauna, this region has claimed the fascination of many. The book weaves the stories of 3 characters, Piya, a marine biologist; Kanai, a businessman from Delhi, and Fokir, a local fisherman; together they are pitted against the tide of fate, unravelling stories of the future and past.
A master of adventure and science fiction, many have travelled across the world, undersea and through space with Verne. Travel the world with a rich English gentleman and his French valet from London to the dusty land of Egypt, onward to our very own Bombay and Calcutta, and then to Hong Kong and Japan, and such. From taking trains, hiring elephants, situations involving mistaken identities, steamers, there is much drama to this story, ending in a nail-biting finish.
THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES by Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN by Frances Mayes
It was a trip of a lifetime- the young Ernesto Guevera and his friend, rumble across the varied landscapes of South America on their faithful motorcycle. The duo travel from Argentina to Chile, Peru among other Latin American nations. It lays bare the pensive beauty of the continent, and is a must read for budget travel lovers.
A book so enthralling, it’ll have you feeling the warmth of the Tuscan sun, tasting the many Italian delights, feasting the eyes on the rolling plains and vineyards, and drinking imaginary wine. The story is about a writer, who in the throes of a troubled relationship, heads to Tuscany to unblock her mind.
INTO THE WILD by Jon Krakauer
NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND by Bill Bryson
Based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, the book is based on Jon’s article on the same. It is the story of Christopher, who post-graduation, ceases to communicate with his family in Virginia. He travels across the western United States, and hitchhikes to Alaska. A remarkable tale of a young man who gives away a dream future to live frugally in the rough environment of Alaska, is a story worth reading.
A humourous take on travel, people and culture, Bill Bryson’s book is said to best represent Great Britain. The author mainly uses public transportation and is an evocative travel book from a leading author of the genre. From marvelling at the heritage of Britain, travelling to its farthest corners and understanding its various culture references.
EAT, PRAY, LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert
SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET by Heinrich Harrer
For those who seek a light read, dive into Eat, Pray, Love. It may start with the typical notes of strained relationships, but read it for the exquisite journey she launches into while in Italy, feeding on wholesome pastas and pizzas, exquisite wine and gelato. Her travels take her to India and onto Bali, where her search ends.
This autobiographical travel book is a treat for those who are avid travellers. Penned by Austrian mountaineer, Harrer, the story revolves around his experiences of the Second World War, his escape from a British internment camp, and his extraordinary travel to Lhasa, Tibet.

INNOVATIVE TAGLINES
SpiceJet has always been an airline with a difference, an airline that cares about the style, the thrill, warmth and the magnificence of flying. In 2009, the airline introduced a tagline Flying for everyone, showcasing SpiceJet’s commitment to bring the dream of flying come true for everyone. In 2010, it again came up with a new tagline reflecting the customer-centric approach of the airline Get more when you fly, and started providing more

It just takes SpiceJet’s ‘Spiciness’ factor up several notches, and is a bold statement to appeal to the younger generation of today. Also, the new tagline promises a whole new experience altogether. As the very words suggest: It’s bright and cheerful as ever. Yet it has got a lot more glam now, in terms of the look as well as the innovative offerings.
OUR PEOPLE, OUR AMBASSADORS
SpiceJet believes that every employee is a representative of the organisation. It is perhaps the first airline in India that has promoted its own employees as its brand ambassadors. This has instilled a sense of organisational pride in its employees. They believe in the core philosophy of the brand and feels
pride in representing the brand in every possible manner. This is the reason why one can see them not only working at the counters, serving customers, piloting aircraft but also in the airline’s promotional campaigns, advertisements and also on the cover of its in-flight magazine.
THE BRAND’S MANTRA
SpiceJet has always been considered as a warm, friendly and efficient airline. At the 10th anniversary celebration event, Ajay Singh, Chairman and MD, SpiceJet, in a motivational speech to its employees, said, “I want you to have each and every one of our customers see the SpiceJet Smile and sense the SpiceJet Passion. Remember that your customers will have fun flying with you if you yourselves have fun doing what you do.” This approach makes SpiceJet an amazing airline that brings the fun, the anticipation, the coolness, the experience, in other words, the ‘spice’ back to flying.

A NEW AVATAR
SpiceJet is different. It’s now Red. Hot. Spicy. The new tagline is proof enough of the exciting phase SpiceJet has glided into. Know more about those associated with this bold campaign. 130
THE JOURNEY SO FAR My decade-long association with SpiceJet has been a rich experience, full of joyous and challenging days. This airline gave me the strength to push through every kind of situation. My armor has strengthened and can handle the dynamic environment of the Indian aviation industry. The various roles I handled have given me a better insight into challenges faced by each department. This helps me to deliver the best in terms of services & experiences to passengers. SPECIAL MEMORIES SpiceJet is a world of opportunities. The family here always stands by each other. We’ve grown from an LCC to a modernised and stylish airline over the decade. Every bit of the hard work that has gone behind it, has formed many memories that will be cherished forever. THE NEW BRAND CAMPAIGN Over the years, the airline industry has been too reluctant in changing their work style and how they let passengers perceive them. We’ve gone a step ahead this time, appreciating the beauty of women. Having our own crew be a part of the bold campaign, has given us, and our front liners, a great opportunity to be part of a youthful and trendy look. Our effort is to break conventional style and introduce in India, a new flying experience all together.

THE FEELING It is a great feeling to be a part of such an amazing campaign. It was challenging as the concept of ‘Red. Hot. Spicy.’ is quite unique. However, it brought the best out of me. The new look of the airline reveals the hotness, redness and spiciness, just as the rest of the crew members. Our airline is unique in its own way and so are we. We believe in providing a ‘WOW’ experience to our customers, rather than being mechanical. SpiceJet always comes up with colourful ideas and we as crew, add a little bit of spice into it to make it more delightful for the passengers. SPECIAL MEMORIES I joined SpiceJet in 2010. Who can forget the day when the airline created history in Indian skies by performing the famous ‘holi dance’, and I am very grateful to be a part of it. SpiceJet is the first airline in India to have images of its crew painted on the body of the iconic Red Chilli aircraft, and I am proud to be a part of this too. There are many memories linked with SpiceJet, and many more are yet to come. WALKING ON THE RAMP Being on the ramp has always been my dream. I am not only having a good career with SpiceJet, but also fulfilling my passion. So there is nothing more that I can ask for. All I want to do is deliver my best.
ROSHIKA CHETTRI, Cabin Crew, Kolkata Base
THE FEELING It feels great to be a part of SpiceJet’s new brand campaign. The new look signifies the boldness and independence of our airline and the new campaign is designed to celebrate the youth-friendly aspect. So I could relate a lot to it. This new attitude is beyond the superficial, capturing the inner power and strength of a women. SPECIAL MEMORIES Not just one, there are many special memories. Every day is a new journey and the moments turn out to be memories that are cherished. At times, we meet people who become really good friends in future. The SpiceJet crew is like a family to me. So overall, it’s a really good experience.
ARUSHI MISHRA, Cabin crew, Bengaluru base THE FEELING Being a part of SpiceJet's new campaign was an exceptionally brilliant experience, as well as the fabulous photo shoot. I love SpiceJet from the bottom of my heart. I really like the new brand image of the airline and the concept is very trendy. The new tagline and logo are fantastic. This represents the new generation of SpiceJet. I love it! SPECIAL MEMORIES SpiceJet celebrates every Indian festival, not only with passengers but with the staff as well. Ever since I joined SpiceJet, I’ve made this my home. This airline has made my dreams come true. I am thankful to SpiceJet for having given me a chance to be a SpiceJetter. WALKING ON THE RAMP It was a wonderful experience. The event that celebrated 10 years of SpiceJet was fun. My team members and colleagues helped me gain confidence for the ramp walk. The atmosphere was very comfortable. This was indeed a special moment for me.
LAVI CHOUDHARY, Cabin Crew, Bengaluru Base
THE FEELING Being a part of ‘bold’ SpiceJet feels great. I wanted to be the face of SpiceJet. I would often flip the pages of the in-flight magazine, Spiceroute, in the aircraft & wish to be in it. Being involved in the photo shoot for the new brand campaign was as exciting as going on a never ending trip. SPECIAL MEMORIES SpiceJet has given me a ton of memories to cherish within this short period of time. One was being a part of the Holi cover shoot for the in-flight magazine this year, my very first steps into the world of SpiceJet glamour! I love the warmth of the airline. WALKING ON THE RAMP The show was marvellous. I'm not praising myself but all the people who supported us, and the whole team behind this show who made the event a success. Also, walking the ramp has been always my dream. We rocked it again! Why wouldn't we? It was our 10th anniversary!

YOGA AT 35,000 FEET!
In a unique initiative, on the occasion of International Yoga Day on June 21, SpiceJet, along with Isha Foundation, held Yoga demonstrations on-board for the first time ever in the world.
K
nown for being an airline with a difference, SpiceJet was approached by Isha Foundation to launch ‘High on Yoga@35000 feet’, a first-ofits-kind event, wherein over 50 Isha instructors and airline cabin crew were trained to perform Yoga on-board, and encourage passengers too. Held on June 21, 2015, the event spread awareness of the benefits of Yoga, and inspired travellers to maintain a healthy body and mind whilst travelling. The 10-minute session was specially designed keeping in mind simple gestures and mudras to carry out while seated. This was performed on select Boeing flights of duration over 1.5 hours. The airline carried out a test-run on June 19, when foundation instructors

and airline staff members demonstrated Upa Yoga for almost 200 passengers on the Delhi-GuwahatiDelhi route. In addition, on June 21, numerous Isha Foundation members greeted passengers with a Namaskar at the check-in counters and boarding gates of select airports. CDs and handouts were also distributed for better impact and greater recall. Talking about the initiative, Ajay Singh, Chairman and MD, SpiceJet Ltd. said, “SpiceJet is pleased to be the first airline in the world to demonstrate Yoga on-board. We are happy to be associated with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in promoting Yoga in India. We are pleased to join hands with Isha foundation for this initiative aimed at our customers

Kamna Singh, Cabin Crew, said, “Yoga provides us tools and techniques to lead a stress-free life. It also helps us in developing patience and composed demeanor.” A must for frequent fliers, Akansha Srivastava, Cabin Crew, opined, “As we fly almost every day, our body tends to get de-hydrated, which further results in dry and wrinkled skin. Regular 15 minutes of daily Yoga helps me keep myself rejuvenated.” An instructor from Isha Foundation further added, “This is an exceptionally unique initiative and we are excited to be a part of this.”

A FINE
BALANCE In conversation with Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation:
134
How does Yoga help in inner transformation? Yoga is a technology for inner transformation on all levels. There are only four basic aspects to what you experience as yourself – your body, mind, emotions and energy. To bring inner transformation, all these four levels must be attended to. If you employ your body or action to transform yourself, we call it karma yoga. If you employ your intelligence, it is gnana yoga. If you employ your emotion, it is bhakti yoga. If you employ your energies, it is kriya yoga. Lack of physical activity has further increased health issues. How does Yoga address this concern? Right now, I know a lot of people are making health their whole occupation in life. To be healthy is natural. To be unhealthy is an unnatural state. You have become unhealthy because you have lost touch with the fundamentals. The whole process of Yoga is to get in touch with that dimension which is the source of creation within. How does Yoga create a right balance of mind, body and soul? Balance is on many different levels. Hatha yoga is a form of Yoga that uses asanas to align with the cosmic geometry. Once you are in tune with the existence, you will naturally be balanced on the physical, psychological and energy levels. If you simply stay in one yogasana with absolute ease, you attain asana siddhi. This means you have mastered the asana, which will bring balance on all levels. How can Yoga help in overall development? Yoga is not about self-development; it is about selfdissolution. It is the method or process which allows an individual piece of life to yoke itself to the cosmic. When your experience of life shifts from being a limited entity to universality, this is Yoga. When there
July 2015 | www.spiceroutemag.com
is a kind of oneness or wholeness within ourselves, this is Yoga. Then you have a certain freedom to play with your life whichever way you want, but at the same time, life cannot leave a scratch on you. The word 'Yoga' in Sanskrit means 'to join, to unite'. What is its significance in today's scenario? The word 'Yoga' means, in one’s experience, everything has become one. It is an inner science to enhance human ability to perceive, to realise their ultimate nature. It is essential that we have an inner sense and awareness of life, that we experience every other being as a part of ourselves. For all the problems of humanity, the solution is in enlarging one’s perception of life, from individuality to universality. If a certain percentage of the population truly becomes meditative, definitely the quality of the world will change.
NAMASKARAM The simplest form of Yoga is Namaskar. The first level of conflict that happens within you is between your ida and pingala, the masculine and the feminine, the sun and moon within, the yin and yang, right and left brain. There is a friction between these two polarities which finds expression in a million ways in your life. By putting your hands together, you can bring harmony to the dualities within and there is a possibility that you can also unite the world.
MUSIC ON BOARD
SpiceJet flights play soft rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... EAGLES Tequila Sunrise An Eagles classic from 1973, the lazy, laidback style of the 'California sound' was pioneered by the Eagles in the 70s. Ironically neither Glenn Frey nor Don Henley is a Californian. RODNEY JONES Ain’t No Sunshine This is an instrumental version of the 1971 hit by Bill Withers, who incidentally was working on the assembly line of the Boeing 747 aircraft when he wrote this song! SANTANA Black Magic Woman This song was a huge hit for San Francisco Latin rock band, Santana in 1970. It is originally a Fleetwood Mac song, written in 1968. SEALS AND CROFTS Get Closer This song was released as a single in 1976, with the semi-obssessive lyrics 'Darling if you want me to be closer to you, get closer to me… If you want me to love only you, then love only me'.
NEIL YOUNG Heart of Gold This Dylan-esque Neil Young hit from 1972 is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury. This track features James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt on backing vocals. SIMON & GARFUNKEL Homeward Bound It was written by Paul Simon in 1965 and performed by the duo. It describes Simon's longing to return home to his then girlfriend, Kathy Chitty, who was in London.
PAUL SIMON Kathy’s Song
CROSBY STILLS & NASH Just a Song Before I Go
Paul Simon moved to England to pursue a solo career in 1965. At the first club he played, he met Kathy Chitty who became his girlfriend and inspiration for 'Kathy's Song'.
The song was written by Graham Nash in 1977 in Hawaii in about 20 minutes when he was waiting for the rain to stop before leaving the house.
OSIBISA Welcome Home Osibisa is a Ghanaian Afro-pop band, founded in London in 1969 by four expatriate African and three Caribbean musicians. 'Welcome Home' is a haunting tune with plaintive rootless immigrant lyrics yearning for belonging.
JOSE FELICIANO Rain
ABBA Slipping Through My Fingers From ABBA's final album The Visitors from 1981, the song is about a mother's regret at how quickly her daughter is growing up.
Performed by José Feliciano, a Puerto Rican virtuoso guitarist, blind from birth, singer and composer, this 1969 song is included among his greatest.
NEIL DIAMOND Brooklyn Roads
SANTANA Samba Pa Ti This is a Latin-influenced instrumental track from the 1970 album Abraxas, that became Santana's breakout album. THE TOURÉ-RAICHEL COLLECTIVE Le Niger The group is led by Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli singer and pianist Idan Raichel. THE BEATLES In My Life One of the simplest, and most melancholic and the most poignant tracks by The Beatles from their mop-top days of 1965, the song is an example of John Lennon's deeper side. HARRY CHAPIN Cat’s In The Cradle 'Cat's in the Cradle' is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin. The song is told by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son, offering promises of spending time together in future.
This is a beautiful track from 1968, where Neil Diamond reminisces about his childhood home and the growing up days in Brooklyn with his parents and brother, knowing there is no going back to those days. ELTON JOHN Daniel A lilting hit in 1973, the song's co-writer Bernie Taupin said the story was about a guy who went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. The people treated him like a hero, but, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and live the life that he'd led before. GARY MOORE Still In Love With You It is a hauting song originally recorded by Thin Lizzy, first released in 1974 album Nightlife. It is widely considered to be Thin Lizzy's greatest, most romantic ballad.
JOHN LENNON God This 1970 song has one of the most powerful opening lines in rock history: 'God is a concept by which we measure our pain'. He then goes on to add 'I don't believe in the Beatles, I just believe in me, Yoko and me', marking his breakaway from the group. UB40 Don’t Break My Heart This simple UB40 ballad from 1985 was a huge hit, and stirs many memories amongst those of a certain age, evoking first crushes and slow dances from days gone by. GORDON LIGHTFOOT Sundown This song by a Canadian folk artist was released in 1974. The lyrics seem to describe a troubled romantic relationship, with the narrator recounting an affair with a "hard-loving woman [who's] got me feeling mean". DOBIE GRAY Drift Away
This recording by Dobie Gray in 1973 became a big hit, and is a staple on US classic rock stations. It is a great track to relax and reminisce to.
