Dear SpiceJet customer, November 1 marks the completion of one year since I joined SpiceJet. It has been a challenging and exhilarating year in which SpiceJet has certainly made a mark.

The branding, positioning, and perception of SpiceJet has been transformed over the course of the year, and from flying aircraft with the lowest loads (occupancy) one year ago, we are now in the position of having flown the fullest aircraft in the last 4 months. Average revenue per flight has gone up, operating costs have been reduced, and customer service transformed.

SpiceJet now is a market-maker with its innovative fares and offers, and is a market shaker as well with other innovations such as our new and enhanced menu, weekend uniform, surprise birthday card distributions and celebrations on board, vibrant celebrations during major festivals such as Holi, Diwali, and during regional festivals such as Durga Puja.

We have brought warmth, colour, passion, and a sense of joy back to the Indian aviation landscape, delivered to you each day by our 5,000 committed employees.

Also thanks to SpiceJet and its pricing stimulation initiatives that shook up the industry in a positive direction, passengers travelling by air grew 28% in September 2014 relative to September 2013, benefiting not just customers grabbing cheap fares, but also the larger economy: research has shown that for every dollar spent on air travel, 12 dollars is pumped into the economy overall, thanks to the ‘multiplier effect’.

Airports, travel agents, hotels, and local businesses have all benefited from the increase in air travel, with never-before seen volumes even in low season. I do not think it would be far-fetched to refer to this as the ‘SpiceJet Effect’.

In light of the above, it is ludicrous to think that some people claim the low fare offers are fake.

Our mailboxes and Twitter feed is full of comments from passengers who have benefited from such offers, who cannot understand how anyone can claim these fares are not real. Demand does not go up 28% without this kind of pricing stimulation. The same people have also claimed that matching low fares prove the existence of a so-called

‘cartel’. To them I simply say, have you ever seen a cartel get together to reduce (and not increase) prices?

The concept is ludicrous, so say the least. This is not a cartel, this is a competition. This is how a free market works!

Despite all of the growth in passenger numbers, the airline industry in India remains under severe stress due to high costs.

Aviation fuel cost in India is 40-60% higher than in other parts of the world. Even as crude oil prices have fallen by 17.3% since June this year, the price we pay for aviation fuel has fallen by only 3.2%. SpiceJet paid `3,260 cr for fuel in fiscal 2014. It is almost 50% of our costs. A 17.3% reduction would reduce our FY2014 fuel bill of `3,260 cr by `564cr. A 3% reduction reduces it by `98 cr. The difference is `466 cr!

ATF prices in India (combination of base price and taxes) is really hurting Indian aviation and challenging the very viability of the sector. Our appeal to the relevant ministries is to please pass on more of the benefit of reduced global oil prices to help make the aviation sector in India healthier. We are not asking for special discounts or handouts, all we are asking for is ATF prices and taxes closer to what is paid elsewhere in the world, rather than what we have today. If that can happen, the industry will do the rest and rebound strongly.

TIMELY ACTION In October 2014, I had the privilege of witnessing the best customer care in the service industry. My flight from Delhi to Mumbai on October 5th was cancelled and rescheduled to 1720 hrs.

Later, the same flight was delayed by 45 minutes. As a result I was bound to miss the bus service from Mumbai to Pune. On apprising my situation to the station manager Divya, I was accommodated on a direct flight to Pune. Her timely action in the situation was commendable and it reinforces me to travel by SpiceJet again.

The World Bank is keen on funding 'Buddhist circuit' in Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister of the state directed his officials to come up with suggestions to a ract more international tourists and promote religious, eco-tourism and beach tourism in the state. He instructed the team to focus on promoting local arts and handicra s like Kondapalli Bommalu, Etikoppaka and Narsapuram laces. He opined that Kuchipudi dance should be promoted on global and local platforms by incorporating it in every programme.

The government is also looking at establishing a tourism university on the lines of those in Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland, with world-class facilities, offering a gamut of courses.

FIRST CORAL GARDEN IN INDIA

In order to conserve several coral species at one place and to boost tourism in the state, Gujarat will set up the country's first 'Coral garden' at Mithapur coastal region of Devbhoomi-Dwarka district in Gujarat. Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up the coral garden. Funded by the Gujarat forest department, the 'Coral Garden' will house nearly all coral species found in Gulf of Kutch. Tourists will be able to watch the beauty of corals as the authorities plan to have wading, snorkeling, diving, representative pool, je y and boat anchoring areas in it.

he waters are blue and clear, the air is crisp and nippy. I am si ing on the promenade facing the clear waters, the sound of the gurgling Ganges is soothing to the ears. Thick jungles dot the other side of Ganges. I ask a local native about the same, and he says it’s the boundary of Rajaji National Park.

Oh my! Rajaji National Park is just across the shore, I wonder. I am in Rishikesh, the town synonymous with the whole idea of white water ra ing in north India

Every year, scores of tourists from India and abroad come here to spend time iu the lap of nature.

Several small but a ractive resorts dot the landscape for tourists.

All are owned and run by the community-based organisations.

ANOTHER SIMILAR SUSPENSION BRIDGE - RAM JHULA WAS BUILT IN 1986 AT THE NEARBY SHIVANAND NAGAR. THE LAKSHMAN JHULA IS 450 FT LONG AND IS SITUATED AT A HEIGHT OF 70 FT FROM THE RIVER.

But whenever I come here, the spiritual town seems new and unexplored. To me, Rishikesh has always been that magical land where adventure and spiritualism walk handin-hand. Situated in U arakhand, Rishikesh can be approached by road and rail via Haridwar.

Bidding goodbye to Delhi on weekends is a good idea, and the roughly five hour drive to Rishikesh is not very tiring. On a Friday morning,

Rishikesh has all the elements to offer an exciting and relaxing weekend getaway I began my sojourn to Rishikesh, this time with an idea to just relax and soak in the freshness. Enjoying the breakfast aboard the Dehradun Shatabdi, I charted out my plan to explore Rishikesh. By the time the train reached Haridwar – the nearest railhead for Rishikesh - my itinerary was set. The half-an-hour drive from Haridwar was scenic. This time, we had taken the route that connects Rajaji National Park to Rishikesh. The route is clear and is not known to many. The best part of approaching Rishikesh via this route is that it connects you with the wildlife and

gives you a good chance to spot a few exotic birds.

A er a while, I reached my place of stay for this trip. On the banks of the awe-inspiring, tranquil Ganges lies a delightful retreat named 'Ganga Kinare'. This hotel has a majestic presence in a land where spirituality and nature perfectly blend. The fresh breeze from the hills is enough to calm you. A quick lunch at the café and I was ready to explore the riverside boutique hotel which boasts of a waterside esplanade. While I was taking a quiet stroll alongside the sinuous river, I spo ed a baby elephant on the other side of the shore. The elephant was approaching the river, perhaps to satiate its thirst.

Dusk was still an hour away when I began my yoga session with the instructors at the resort.

The session was conducted on the corridor overlooking the magnificent Ganges. Even the regular pranayam felt different and did some magic to my senses. The hotel's private river ghat allowed me to take a dip in the holy waters. The rooms at the resort are a sheer bliss for those looking for peace, serenity and beauty. Every room offers a panoramic view of the river and mountains, it feels good to sit back and enjoy the scenery.

The old Hollywood feel is more my thing. However, I love to don those androgynous looks. I loved my look in Krrish. I like the fierceness of an edgy look, too. But you can’t be like that all your life. Even the classic look starts to get boring a er a while. One has to try different things. Sometimes I just like staying natural. I leave my curls open and shun makeup.” So what is really her personal style? “You can’t give a certain name to my style.

It keeps evolving.”

Evolved, it has. It had to. She was only eighteen when she entered Bollywood, eight years ago. She was appreciated for her freshness. Then she began to experiment with her style. Reminiscing about her early days when she was shooting with Madhur Bhandarkar for Fashion, she says, “We were doing this particular scene where Madhur Sir was trying to tell the designer in whispers that he would like me to remove my top and wear a tube, or something like that.

I heard that and just threw my top off. Standing there in my bra, I asked him, ‘Is this what you want?’ And people around me were stunned.”

She may have been a misfit in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh owing to her non-conformist ways, but she confesses that there is a part of her that will always belong to the hills. “My new house is entirely inspired by the mountains and the whole feel is like that of a hill co age,” she tells us. "My ideal life would be somewhere in the mountains. I would have wood logs and mud walls. In fact, I have done up my house like a house in Manali,” she reveals.

he name Saffron is believed to be derived from the Latin word 'Safranum' and the plant is said to have been cultivated first in Greece. In Hindi, it is known as Kesar. The spice got its mention as far back as 1500 BC in many classical writings, as well as in the Bible. The botanical name of Saffron is crocus sativus. Obtained from the dried stigmas of the flower, it takes anything from 70,000 to 2,50,000 flowers to make one pound of saffron.

Its trumpet shaped stigmas are bright red, gradually changing to yellow in the style.

The first historic reference of saffron comes from Ancient Egypt, where it was said to be used by Cleopatra and other pharaohs as an aromatic and seductive essence, and to make ablutions in temples and other sacred places.

SAFFRON RICE Ingredients Rice – 1 cup Saffron – a few strands Sugar – 1 cup Cardamom - Green 4-5 (crushed) Black - 2 (crushed) Laung – 8-10 Desi ghee - 2 tbsp Milk – 1 cup Rose water – 1/2 tsp Almonds and cashew nuts (chopped)

METHOD Soak rice in water for 1 hour. Put Saffron strands in milk, add rose water and sugar. Boil 4-5 cups of water in a pan, add the rice and cook till the rice is about 80% done. Strain the water and mix half of desi ghee. Heat the remaining half in a pan. Add dry fruits and fry till golden-brown.

Add whole spices and fry for about half a min. Add the milk mixture and boil. Add the rice and cook on low flame for 10-12 min. Garnish with dry fruits.

Middle Ages. The town of Saffron Walden, where it was once grown commercially, takes its name from the plant. Although the majority of the world's saffron is produced in Iran, Spain is the world's largest exporter of the spice. It can also be found in Egypt, Kashmir, Morocco and Turkey.

USAGE

Highly appreciated in Classic Greece for its colouring and aromatic properties, Saffron was initially used as a remedy to sleeplessness and to reduce hangovers caused by wine.

Arabs used saffron in medicine

HABITAT The cultivation of saffron needs an extreme climate: hot and dry weather in summer and cold in winter. The sowing of bulbs is a very hard job because it forces the person to walk in a bent position for hundreds of yards.

The rose of saffron blooms at dawn and should stay for the least possible time in the plant because it withers quickly. For this reason, they are collected between dawn and 10 am. Once the flowers are gathered, stigmas are separated and dried. Then, the stigmas get their final shape: bright red, rigid and without wrinkles.

As the warm body oil is massaged all over with rhythmic movements, it relaxes the muscles and help soothe the aches. The long continuous strokes help in blood circulation, and the entire procedure takes almost 45 minutes. A separate oil is used to massage the head. A face pack can also be opted for. The aroma of the oil imparts a sweet smell, while moisturising the body as well. Post the Abhyanga, the body is wiped with a so muslin cloth, and then one is moved to the shower area.

the oil is quite slippery. At this point, a body scrub made of green moong paste is applied all over the body and massaged with gentle pressure.

Kashmiri Pandits are known for their gourmet food. And weddings are even more special. While the lunch on the day of the wedding or ‘Lagan’ is for the couple, relatives and friends to enjoy, the dinner or Phir Sal is only for the couple who are invited for a meal by the girl’s parents. The wedding food is generally served in 'tram' or copper plates.

No onions and garlic are used by Kashmiri Pandits and interestingly, the spices used are boiled rather than fried, giving the dishes a unique and distinctive flavour and aroma.

6. Add the chana dal and cashew nut, fry till golden brown.

7. Add the grated coconut and the boiled rice, mix gently.

8. Check for seasoning and serve hot.

Delhi-based Soumen Nath was a Chief Engineer-Automation with a UK-based MNC. A er a professional course and hours of practice, he delved into the eventful life of photography. With a background of street photography, ge ing people to pose for pictures was never his forte, and thus, his wedding images brought forth the ‘naturalness’ of the traditions, people involved, etc.

Believing himself to be a candid artist from within, Soumen is confident of the work he produces. “I am a keen observer and a story teller. I love to capture the beauty of life, those fleeting moments, which are lost instantaneously for ever, to encapsulate those moments as a story for clients to preserve forever.”

Says Ishaan, “Nowadays, the couples have started becoming a lot more involved in the whole process as decision-makers, especially when it comes to aesthetics. Wedding photography is also fast moving away from a ‘documentary’ style to a more focussed, artistic product.

A lot of young artists are bringing their unique visions to the process, adding a lot of freshness to the industry as a whole.”

Also, with the emergence of social media, couples now like to showcase their pictures online, and not preserve images only in a photo album. “Short wedding films are also a rage these days, as they can be shared online and bring out the essence of the celebration in a visually appealing way,” he says.

Soumen has witnessed his customers wanting more mood shots, where emotions and gaiety are captured. “They want to capture the event as it unfolds.” His customers have a basic knowledge of candid photography, a step which he feels will eventually pave the way for more creative art in the field of photography, where mediocrity will take a back seat. Elvin believes that

CUSTOMISE WHY?

In the global market this started as a functional modification of ex-military bikes right a er the second World War. The idea was to develop cheap motorcycles by bobbing and chopping old ones, in order to increase efficiency and speed. The trend entered a new phase when the cheap variable was absolutely done away with and fashionable statement

replaced utility, for some time.

Craig explains, “When we started 9 years ago, the trend was choppers that were flashy, but the current trend is being true to the essence of motorcycling. Designs have become more classic and vintage, and are more user-friendly.”

Choppers remained, and to a limited extent still are, in the radar of popularity because of the style quotient, rather than performance or comfort. Called so because of modification of the original design (‘chopping’), a traditional chopper has high handlebars, long forks, a small front tyre and typically are without the rear suspension, the signature of several Hollywood movies, the most iconic of which is ‘Captain America’ in Easy Rider.

CUSTOMISE HOW?

“We dream and mostly our dreams have two wheels,” says Samik Cha erjee, avid biker, founder and creative designer of Delhi-based Motocra Customs. An old bike (or a new mass produced model) is brought to the workshop with an estimated design idea by a customer. A er a few brainstorming sessions, a workable design is decided upon, with a focus on functionality and efficiency.

“Designing is the element that excites us the most in the process of remodelling and customising. We take each of our designs through ruthless test runs that we otherwise are apprehensive to conduct on right-off-the-showroom bikes,” adds Samik.

The models in demand are cafe racers, old school choppers, bobbers, scramblers or board trackers. The bikes, frequent as base models, are mostly Royal Enfields, Harley Davidsons, Karizmas and Avengers.

The cost to rebuild these bikes is a wide variable. Indigenous players, however, depending upon the details

The theme also integrated the central vidhi mandap that resembled a Kashmiri temple. ” Masquerade is another theme which is ‘in’ this season. Says Neha and Darshan Shroff from Momente Wedding Planners, “One of the very successful themes this year is masquerade. We recently planned a pre-wedding party where we had the decor planned around the theme."

t the Ambedkar Colony in south Kolkata’s Alipore area, the sweepers have just returned from their job of cleaning the city. The colony is home to around 500 sweepers employed with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. For people who keep the city clean, the living conditions in the colony are appalling. Garbage lies dumped along its lanes, the drains are clogged with plastic, the courtyard and sides of buildings hold waste water and garbage hangs down the sunshades of windows.

“People keep their rooms clean but don’t care about the dirt outside,” says Mithun Rajbanshi, a second-generation sweeper and resident of the colony. Ambedkar Colony is one of the constituencies of the awareness campaign run

by Garbage Free India (GFI)

GFI is a Kolkata-based citizen’s collective that seeks to raise awareness about garbage dumping.

Knowing how intractable adults can be, GFI has got the colony’s children to act as messengers of a cleaner, healthier living. At the Alipore centre of Nabadisha—an informal school system run by the Kolkata Police for the city’s underprivileged children—GFI activists hold sessions on cleanliness and hygiene; and volunteers help the children paint cleanliness-related diagrams and graffiti on walls. Students are being made aware of garbage segregation, separating paper and plastic waste garbage and sanitation issues. GFI also highlights a 2006 World Bank report which states that poor garbage management and sanitation cause India a loss equivalent to 6.4% of India’s GDP, amounting to `5.1 trillion.

“We are talking about behavioural and cultural changes that have continued over centuries. It will take decades for us to effect change but a beginning has to be made,” says Ghose.

GFI has made a few early breakthroughs. At the sprawling campus of Kolkata’s Sri Sri Academy, the school’s principal, Suvina Shunglu, says students are now ready for the next level of garbage management a er GFI had previously run a campaign in the school in 2013.

“We are now making them aware of garbage segregation where every classroom will have two boxes for paper and plastic waste. Each landing will have a bin for biodegradable waste. A composting bin will also

come up,” says Shunglu. Nine-yearold Neeraj Ravidas returns home from the Nabadisha centre. It has only been a week since he met the GFI volunteers, but Ravidas knows that he can no longer nonchalantly throw the toffee wrapper or potato chips packet on the street. “I will put them in a dustbin or keep them in my pocket till I find one,” he says. Ravidas is the son of a sweeper. He has a message for his parents and neighbours. “I will tell them that we will catch some disease from all the garbage.” He doesn’t know what disease can affect them, but a beginning has been made.

PUSHKAR FAIR

Thousands of people including ca le traders, shopkeepers, merchants, dancers, musicians and artisans come together at Pushkar for a five-day long event, which holds the distinction of being India's largest ca le fair. The fair features performances by musicians and dancers from Thar Desert. Camel race contest is usually the first event during the fair. The camels are decorated in finery and are raced to reach the finishing line before the music stops. The camel with the best speed, equipment and ornaments, and with the capacity to interpret and carry out its master's commands is declared the winner. There are the wellknown longest moustache, matka phod and bridal competitions that a ract thousands of tourists from all over the world. Some of the events that are part

of the fair include the Camel Race Gorband - Camel Decoration, Camel and Horse Dance, Kabaddi match (local v/s visitors). Turban tying and tilak competition are some of the cultural programmes held here. Home to India's only temple dedicated to Brahma, Pushkar receives a heavy tourist influx as pilgrims come to a end the festival and bathe in the holy waters of the lake here.

The two days around full moon are considered to be the most auspicious time of the year for bathing in this lake.

One can also get their body pierced or simply enjoy the camel rides and local delicacies at the fair. Alternatively, one can opt for a hot air balloon ride and witness the spectacle from a bird's eye view.

GANGA MAHOTSAV AND DEV DEEPAVALI

Held along the banks of the holy Ganges river, this unique festival features cultural programmes of classical music and dance. However, the highlight of the festival is on the last day, when more than a million clay lamps float down the river at dusk amidst chanting of Vedic hymns as part of Dev Deepavali.

Celebrated on the 15th day a er Diwali, it is a tribute to river Ganga by the people of Varanasi. It is believed that

on this day, gods descend on Earth. It is interesting to note that the Kartik Purnima festival also coincides with the Jain light festival and Guru Nanak Jayanti. To mark the occasion, the U ar Pradesh Tourism department organises a four-day Ganga Mahotsav around this period.

On the occasion of the Ganga Mahotsava, reputed artists and performers from all over the country come and perform.

Wangala is a post-harvest festival that marks the end of the agricultural year. Also known as the '100 Drum Wangala Festival', this is the biggest harvest festival of Meghalaya's Garo tribe in northeast India. Celebrated by the beating of drums, blowing horns, and traditional dancing, it is an act of thanksgiving to the sun god of fertility, known as Misi-A-Gilpa-Saljong-Galapa. A nagara or a special drum used for calling the people on solemn occasions, is beaten.

The social aspect of the Wangala Festival goes on in villages for a number of days, with eating, drinking and merrymaking. This is the most popular festival of the Garo Hills when the men and women dance with the beating of drums, blowing the buffalo horn trumpets and bamboo flutes. The men wear colourful a ire, half-jackets and turbans with feathers.

And the women wear colourful dresses made of silk and a head-wrap with feathers. The highlight of the festival is when 300 dancers and 100 drums descend on the field in all their splendour for the celebrations.

SONEPUR FAIR A traditional fair, the Sonepur Fair has remained pristine in its charm through the ages. The festival takes place along the banks of the Ganges river. Entering the exciting domain of commercial aviation, SpiceJet started its operations in 2005. Modelled as a low-cost airline, lowest air fares with highest consumer value were offered. The period from 2005 to 2012 can be termed as a period of inception and expansion. And by 2008, SpiceJet was India's secondlargest low-cost airline in terms of market share. 1. Registration process: Once you enter your agency details, submit the form. An email is sent to the registered email id for validation. Once this is done, the airline staff will get in touch regarding further verification. Post this, the email logins will be provided.

2. Adhoc group request: Enter the various details of your trip, such as one-way, round trip or multi-city, details of departure, baggage and meal preference, and select your flight. Mention the number of passengers. The airline will revert regarding various flight possibilities, and you can click on them for more details.

3. Update names: Once you reach the payment confirmation page, click on the ‘submit passenger’ bu on. Select the request for which you would like to make the payment. Once you have reviewed your option, upload passenger information, or add them manually.

4. Print e-ticket: Click on ‘Get Booking’ menu and choose the specific request for which you want an e-ticket. Click on print.

Customer feedback: My wife and I o en travel with SpiceJet, and we came across Chetan twice. Our first encounter with him was on the Delhi-Goa flight in May this year. We met him the next time, when we were returning from Kochi in August. Both times we were given a warm welcome by him. He remembered us even a er so many months. He is the first cabin crew I came across who remembered passengers.

We were given non-reclining seats from Kochi-HyderabadDelhi, and we were unhappy.

Although he couldn't help us in changing the seats as the flight was full, he made sure that we were comfortable.

When I enquired with Kanchan, she explained that as per safety practices, it was not a good idea to have a person who could not move quickly, in times of emergency, seated right next to the door.
