Dear SpiceJet customer, September marks the final month of a sad but inevitable phase of life for many parents: the season their kids leave the home nest to go to college. The children leave all excited and slightly nervous, perhaps not fully appreciating that life for them now enters a completely new phase, there is no going back to childhood and school days. For parents, it is emotionally very draining, to know that their kids are no longer kids, and are off now to make their own lives. We all know time with our children while they are still children is limited, yet the pressures of daily life prevent us from realising that time is passing very quickly. There are two very beautiful songs that capture the emotions of parents at the passage of time and lost moments, and they are both featured in this month’s boarding and landing music playlist. They are ‘Cat’s in the Cradle’ by the late American folk singer Harry Chapin, where a father sings about how his son is growing to be just like him and how he regrets not having more time with him when he was growing up; and ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by the
Swedish group ABBA from their very last album, where a mother sings about her daughter fast growing up and both time and precious moments slipping by. Another track, the beautiful ‘Brooklyn Roads’ by American artist Neil Diamond, also speaks of a man’s nostalgia for his childhood days with his parents and siblings. For those of a certain age, these songs will tear at your heartstrings. My children are not yet at this stage, my daughter is 14 and my son just 12. But before we know it, they will be flying the coop too, and there is nothing we can do to stop the passage of time. (Read the lyrics of these songs on Page 162 of this issue). Back to regular for this column: According to the latest (at the time of publication) DGCA data, SpiceJet flew the fullest planes of all airlines in India during July, with 80% load factor (occupancy). The next highest occupancy airline was at 69%. SpiceJet is now the undisputed #2 airline in India in terms of domestic passenger share, and we have achieved this with the help of our new network, improved branding and product, and most importantly, our dynamic approach where we believe flying empty seats, which is
the ultimate perishable commodity, is a sheer waste. The entire SpiceJet family has put all their hearts into offering the best fares that have allowed SpiceJet to fly much fewer empty seats, demolishing the notion that you cannot fly full planes in low season. It is not only good for the airline, but also for customers who now have access to much more affordable fares (especially those willing to book early), and for the economy at large due to the significant economic multiplier effect that accompanies air travel. In August, we officially launched our new SpiceMax product and seats (the subject of our cover story this month), where the first 5 rows on most of our Boeing aircraft have been re-configured to provide significantly more legroom than standard seats on SpiceJet and other budget airlines. Those who have experienced the new legroom have been giving rave reviews. It is well worth the modest premium we are charging for these seats, and these seats can be reserved at the time of booking or after booking through ‘Manage My Booking’ on spicejet.com (even if you have made your booking through a travel agent), and at the airport at the time of check-in. You can also purchase these seats if available on-board. We will try to exceed your expectations and delight you every time you fly with us. If you have any feedback for us, please send an email to customerfirst@spicejet.com. Thank you for flying SpiceJet.

Letters from
SpiceJet customers maximum customer satisfaction
I have travelled by different airline carriers in the past, however, my recent flight from Bengaluru to Pune is worthy of a special mention. Right from boarding till landing, I felt very well taken care of and experienced what we call true customer delight in the skies! The cabin team in-charge, Suraj and his team showed what a delightful experience flying can be. From clear announcements to the ever-smiling attitude of the crew, to politely addressing the passengers and greeting them on disembarking, it has been a delightful experience! I am sending this email in appreciation to your team for creating such a warm atmosphere and making flying such a wonderful experience. Kudos to your team. Special mention to the team onboard- Suraj, Lavie and Sheldon. Keep up the good work! I will share my experience by word of mouth. of the I wish you all much success and look forward to many more such experiences. Rashmi R

polite, humble and concerned On June 30, 2014, I travelled from Ahmedabad to Muscat, and was pleased with my experience during my brief stay at the airport interacting with your staff. They were very polite and humble. In particular, I would like to thank Shrungesh Dave, who was at the check-in counter that day. He was kind and soft spoken, and I noticed he cleared all the outbound passengers with equal respect and dedication towards his duty. I have been in Muscat since 1988 and have travelled frequently all these years on other airlines, but once you commenced direct operations to Ahmedabad, it has been a great relief for all Gujarat-bound people in Muscat. The launch witnessed Indian food connoisseurs munching on tasteful Falafels, Hummus with Tahini, Spicy Moutabal, Fatoush, Halawas and many sinful indulgences that were on the spread, like a Lebanese village during festivities, prepared under Chef Maroun Chedid. The gastronomical delight was made even more special by the feet tapping numbers of Zeid Hamdan, the delightful dancing, the wines and the mesmerising Nay performance by Bashir Saade.

They have also said that they would like to speed up the airport check-in process and avoid long queues." The name ‘Colombo’, first introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, is believed to be derived from the classical Sinhalese name Kolon thota, meaning ‘port on the river Kelani’. Famous Traveller Ibn Batuta who visited the island in 14th century, referred to it as Kalanpu.
DAY ONE
8:00 AM: Spiritual sightings They say it is good to start the day invoking god’s blessings. So on my first day in Colombo, I decided to start my explorations by visiting Gangaramaya Temple that was built in the 19th century. As one of the most significant and famous Buddhist temples in Colombo, the architecture of the temple has major influences from India, Thailand and China. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a centre for learning. The Bodhi tree in the courtyard is quite impressive and so is the slope of Buddhas in the temple. Also another fascinating place to visit in the temple is the museum which houses dozens of artefacts and gives you the feeling of walking into an antique shop. 10:00 AM: Artistic splendour From spirituality I quickly moved to
The Gangaramaya temple has major influences from India, Thailand and China art and culture. And to understand the history of the city, I made a stop at National Museum of Colombo. Being the largest museum in the country, it gives tourists a wonderful introduction to the history, tradition and culture of Sri Lanka. There are sculptures, carvings, paintings, pottery and fascinating items from the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. The museum holds many artefacts from different eras of much importance to Sri Lanka, such as regalia, including the throne and crown of the Kandyan monarch.
The two World Trade Center towers – completed in 1997 – are most recognised landmarks of the city.

Do not miss A visit to a Batik Factory When in Sri Lanka, one must not miss the opportunity to collect spices and batik fabrics. The whole process of creating the fabric is immensely intricate and detailed. Just viewing the process is quite enlightening and since each design is hand created, no two designs will ever be the same or perfect.
30 Must Buys For Sri Lankan artefacts, handicrafts and souvenirs, head to Laksala, the only state owned gift & souvenir boutique. Laksala offers the widest variety of all Sri Lankan products at a reasonable price. Some ‘must buys’ in Colombo include spices & tea, handicraft items, traditional jewellery, Sri Lankan masks and batik fabrics.

1:30 PM: Food pangs For lunch, I decided to try some Kothu, which according to the research I did, is a famous delicacy of Sri Lanka. Kothu Roti is a mouthwatering dish that comes in various versions, from chicken, beef, prawns, egg and vegetarian. The dish basically involves mixing of vegetables along with a thick curry, spices and chopped rotis. What gives this dish its distinctiveness is the cutting of the roti into small pieces using two long metal blades and the dish is always prepared on a big open metal pan. The coming together of metals for the purpose of breaking the rotis into small pieces is quite musical and the dish itself is quite appetising. Most of the Sri Lankans eat vegetables. With a large community of farmers, rice and curry forms an integral part of their staple diet
in Sri Lanka. In 'rice and curry' the word ‘curry’ covers a multitude of dishes which are made according to different methods of cooking, from soups, meat, seafood, lentils, vegetables, sambols, mallums, phies to achcharus. 3:30 PM: Shop-n-drop For anything fancy, stylish, unique yet affordable, visit Odel. Being the premium shopping mall in the city, Odel offers a variety of products from fashion accessories, tea, bags and clothes to even home ware. The advantage of shopping in Sri Lanka is that since Indian rupee is stronger, you pay half the price for everything you buy. However, that doesn’t imply that everything is cheaper as compared to India. But Odel does offer some value-formoney purchases.

6:30 pM: Galle Face Green After the long and tiring day, I was in a mood for some soul searching and thus headed to Galle Face Green. If the Galle Road is the pulse of Colombo, then the Galle Face is its heart. It is great to have such a huge green space in the middle of any major city, and more so if it is beside the ocean. One of Sri Lanka’s most popular animal attractions, Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. It provides care to abandoned and orphaned elephants, many of whom come to the orphanage as calves. I
watched baby elephants being bottle-fed, and then followed a herd to a nearby river, Maha Oya around 500 metres away, to see the magnificent creatures having a bath. This walk takes them down the main street of town, which

The magician of words and the most loved voice of the city, floors all with his humble gestures, vivacious presence and interesting chatter What was it like before becoming an RJ? My roots are in UP’s Bulandsheher where I was born and brought up. There I studied in a government school where our English lessons used to be one-of-a-kind. Once a student asked the meaning of ‘in’ and the teacher said ‘andar’. He again asked, “Then what is the meaning of ‘inn’” and the teacher replied, “thora aur andar.” This pretty much sums up why I am trying to brush up my English these days. I then did my Bachelor of Business Studies from Jamia Millia Islamia, and later took up a job as a customer care executive in Airtel. Working on an escalation desk there, I would always speak in different voices with different customers. Sometimes, I would pretend to be an old man and if required, a girl. My senior there suggested me to try Radio Jockeying and I decided to audition for the Radio Mirchi RJ hunt in 2004.
Naved started his stint with Radio Mirchi with his first show ‘Love Guru’ and then ‘Total Filmy’. finally, he became ‘Dilli ka Don’

I will get to act in a small role in Sir Ben Kingsley's next film to cost Rs 12. I requested a friend to allow me to make a call from his phone and promised to pay him later. When I called, there was the sound of azaan in the background. I ran inside a nearby shop, and before the shopkeeper could object I told him that my mother was in the ICU and I needed to make an urgent call. He immediately mellowed down. However, I soon started blabbering something over the phone which had nothing to do with my mother’s health and the shopkeeper kept

Recently, I recorded a song with Yo Yo Honey Singh and I will also get to act in a small role in Sir Ben Kingsley’s next movie. I fervently ask God to keep me grounded in life, no matter what I achieve. Your ‘murga’ on Radio Mirchi is the talk of the town. How did you give shape to this concept? I have been making people murga off air since my childhood. As a kid, I would shout like a sabziwala from the top floor of my house and my mother would come out immediately to buy vegetables. Radio Mirchi has given me a platform to bring smiles on the faces of my listeners in the form of Murga. Listeners love it and I get around 25,000 to 35,000 mails everyday requesting me to make someone murga. I select the ones I find most interesting and accordingly develop my story. in order to talk to them. What you hear on the radio for a few minutes is the edited version of our day-long work. Do you have a team that helps with your shows? I don’t have any such team. I write my scripts and conceptualise the show on my own. I love it when listeners appreciate it so much. You have a huge female fan following. Do share some interesting incidents and how you deal with it? If I have 50,000 fans, 28,000 are females. However, it’s not positive all the time. There was a newlywed girl who divorced her husband because she wanted to marry me.
I believe in spreading awareness about social issues I spoke to her but nothing helped. She is now under psychiatric treatment and is doing better than before. Apart from songs and Murga, your show is known for highlighting social issues. What’s your take on that? I believe that as a Radio Jockey my job is not just playing songs, but interacting with our listeners and making them aware about the issues that are damaging our society. It becomes my responsibility to help them become a good
citizen, and I am doing that. Whether it is Mulayam Singh’s controversial comment on rape, writing objectionable comments on Facebook, performing dangerous bike stunts during Shab-e-Barat, or any socially relevant issue, I am always ready with my Murga. What is the best and worst part of your job? The best part is that I don’t have to bother about what to wear to work. My listeners are still charmed by my voice, while I may be in shorts in the studio. Also, I can plan and execute so many things without any special budget. The only negative aspect I can think of is that I get less time to spend with my family.

one are the days when you would look for someone kind enough to hold your camera and click away, while you pose with your family and friends. The task would get even more daunting when you are out all alone in the wilderness and you still want to get that picture of yours.
Out alone in the wild and want to capture the moment? The only option was to take your tripod along, time your camera and strike a pose. It's much simpler now
Now, with your smartphone, you don’t even need a reason anymore. Just extend your hand holding your phone, smile, click and you have your very own ‘selfie’. Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend.

Apparently the act of taking selfies is not new. It dates back to 1914 CE when a Russian Grand Duchess took her picture using a mirror and sent it to a friend with a letter where she wrote, “I took this picture of myself looking at the mirror. It was very hard as my hands were trembling.” We have certainly moved miles away from those hesitant, tense selfie moments. Selfies now are more casual, fun, informal, and at times quirky too. The term ‘Selfie’
Australia can proudly claim the invention of the word ‘selfie’. This term was first used by an Australian University student describing a photograph taken after a friend’s party. He posted a pic of his smashed-up lip on a chat forum, asking advice on treatment. The word quickly caught-on and became popular. So much so that ‘selfie’ has been named the ‘Word of the Year-2013' by Oxford Dictionary.

Selfie craze has been caught-on by everyone. From President Obama to Brad Pitt to our new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi - no one has been able to escape the phenomenon. With the smartphone revolution came the front facing cameras that gave us full control over our selfies. Technology is also catering to the demands of selfie enthusiasts by putting slick photo editing apps on smartphones and tablets. At times, in their enthusiasm, people forget the place and setting and start taking selfies. But there are certain selfie etiquettes as well, like taking a selfie at a funeral is a strict no-no. Selfies posted on social networks are like electronic
footprints that are often difficult to erase later. Embarrassing and unethical selfie posts might result in social pit-falls. The groupie taken by the host Ellen DeGeneres during the 86th Academy Awards this year included Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt among others, was the most re-tweeted image ever. It was re-tweeted over 1.8 million times in the first hour itself. It beat the previous record held by President Obama’s selfie following his 2012 presidential election victory.
A picture speaks a thousand words
Some believe that selfies help people overcome their body image issues and empower them, while others believe that it is just a self-obsessive attitude of the present generation. Whatever the reason may be, sharing our pictures online is not only common but essential for our digital identity. What remains to be seen is whether this trend is here to stay. However, it does seem that this indulgent young generation will find a way to keep selfies a part of their lives - even if told otherwise.

The legacy
64
Presently, the Qureishi family is carrying forward this weaving legacy in Aurangabad. Himroo weaving has been their family business for last 120 years, and are perhaps the only family involved in genuine handloom himroo, who also have several awards to their credit. Faisal Qureishi looks after the Qureishi Weaving and Training Centre where visitors are welcome to view demonstrations of the weaving in progress. He adds, “Himroo shawls are made in cotton, silk, silk and wool, soft wool and raw silk. Two weavers work together for weaving a single shawl of 2 metres. This could take up to a fortnight to manufacture. There are two types of himroo power loom himroo and handloom himroo. Between the two workers, one is known as a programmer who makes the design and the other is the weaver. A shawl made from handloom himroo could take a month to complete, depending on the design, intricacy and pattern.” These shawls range between `1,500-4,000. Qureishi adds, “Blended sarees can be made on paddle looms and power looms. Jacquard looms speed up the manufacturing process and a saree can be made within four days and its cost ranges between `1,000 to `15,000. Also a single worker can look after 2-3 jacquard looms simultaneously. It is also a teamwork where some weavers work on the
In Persian, himroo means cotton with silk warping, making the bob while others do the spinning.” Besides sarees and shawls, bed covers are made with cotton, and cotton with silk. Pure silk bed covers are also on offer. A handmade himroo bed cover could take up to four months to make when it is done on a single loom. The bed cover can be completed within this duration if the weaver sits for eight hours a day and for six days a week. Double bed covers start from `600 and can go up
to `2,000 depending on the size, quality, material and colour used. Table runners, cushion covers, dress material and wall-hangings are also made.
Paithani Sarees
Apart from himroo, another famous work of art of the same area is the paithani saree. In Maharashtrian homes, one’s trousseau is incomplete without a paithani saree. A specialty, this beautifully patterned saree is woven with so much patience and clarity, that when you see the saree, it is like you are seeing a work of art. Even master weavers are able to weave a mere inch in an entire day, that is the kind of detail and patience the weaving
An intricate art The art of himroo is so intricate that even Marco Polo wrote about it or so it seems. It is said that he described a fabric that was given to him in the Deccan area, adding,

“It is as fine as a spider’s web, and kings and queens of any country will take pride in wearing it.” It is believed that in all probability he was referring to himroo.

ethnic beauty Paithani sarees have been a precious heirloom in India since the Shalivahan era of the 2nd century CE, and have been passed down from mother to daughter for several generations. Traditional creative artistry and painstaking workmanship combine to form this unique cloth and make it an experience for the visual and tactile senses.
Materials used There are three types of silk threads used:
66
Charkha: This is widely used. It is cheap, dull and uneven. Ciddle-Gatta: Fine quality silk, thin shear, shiny, smooth and even. China silk: Very expensive to use. The raw silk is cleansed with caustic soda, dyed in the requisite shades and the threads are carefully separated. Khari (True /Real) zari costs about `1,800 for 250 grams. Golden threads are obtained from Surat, the quality being 1,200 yard (1080 m) per tola (11.664 grams). Gold threads are used in double and one of the finest varieties, so much so that the closely woven surface looks like a mirror. The texture of the fabric is fairly compact with about 160 ends and 170 picks per inch (2.6 cm). Zari is the metallic yarn, made of pure silver. Originally, zari was manufactured in Yeola; Surat now being another zari-producing centre.

requires. Depending on the design and length, a single saree could take almost two years to weave. And hence, those who own a paithani are so fiercely possessive and proud of it. Paithani weaving flourished in the Shalivahan era of 2nd century CE. The
A basic design in Paithani saree consists of a peacock on a fountain price of the saree is based not on the material, but on the workmanship involved. Considered to be one of the most expensive sarees in India, they are woven in pure silk with silver thread and zari. The weave is done using the interlocking technique. The design is placed below the paper and the weaver uses it as a reference while weaving the saree.
Reviving the art
Qureishi adds, “Paithani weaving had become a dying art which would have
been lost in the pages of history. It thankfully saw a revival during the time of the Nizam of Hyderabad some 100 years ago. A basic design consists of a peacock on a fountain.” There are three types of Paithani sarees - nariyali border, munnia saree and brocade saree. In the first type, the borders are made with the help of a jacquard or dobby loom. The pallu is set and the weavers in this case don’t require any reference. This saree takes at least a month to weave, and its cost can range between `5,000-11,000. The munnia saree takes about five months to complete and costs `16,000-25,000. Munnia is a flying parrot designed narrow border saree with an elaborate pallu. The weavers have to follow the design on paper. The third type is the brocade saree which has a lot of variety in its designs. These sarees have a design on the pallu as well as the border which could range from 12 to 25 inches. The cost ranges from `40,000 and can go uptill `4 lakh. The weaving can take five months to two years to complete.

all, who can resist a rich, creamy, luscious, kala jamun ice cream? It has all the goodness of the mithai, sans the syrupy effect. Indians love their traditional food and sweets and ice cream flavours like gajar ka halwa, raj bhog, gulab jamun, that give them a chance to enjoy their favourite mithai and dry fruits in a fresh, creamy, cool avatar. Method 1. Soak Sabja seeds in lukewarm water. 2. Combine all the ingredients together and whisk well till the sugar dissolves. 3. Pour into a shallow container. Cover and freeze till it is semi-set. 4. Churn in a blender till all the ice crystals break down and transfer into a shallow container. Cover and freeze till it is firm. Scoop and serve.
“Chefs visit local markets and study different ingredients available, along with the demands of people to satisfy their palate.” Of course chefs have to bear in mind that the unusual ingredients they combine, blend well and result in a pleasing flavour. Avante-garde flavours are all very well, but should be acceptable to the guest. Not surprising, therefore, Indian sweets are a safe bet. People are familiar with these and there is a certain degree of comfort when opting for these even if in the form of an ice cream now.
Unusual Ice Creams “Classics remain classics but trends change every season. And every ice cream brand has to keep up with the customer’s evolving palate.” Indeed, it is this demand for something innovative which is resulting in ice cream brands going berserk." Devanshu Gandhi MD, Vadilal Industries Ltd. September 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com
Diversity of Indian cuisine helps to create a lot of unusual flavours and chefs are going all out. Chef Love Mathur goes a step further. He is even creating ice creams using vegetables, like carrot, beetroot, parwal and spinach. He feels these can be used to infuse new flavours in ice cream by blending them with other leafy vegetables like pudina (mint), tulsi (basil) and dhania (coriander). Even spicy ice creams are a big sensation. Little Bite Foods is all set to launch flavours like chat masala ice cream too. Pabrai’s Fresh & Naturelle
has a lip-smacking cinnamon ice cream, putting the famous Indian spice to an inventive use. Another interesting one is the gandharaj lemon – a wonderfully fragrant lime of East India, chandan (sandalwood) and rose sandesh.
Classics remain classics but trends change every season Regional Favourites
But there are other Indian flavours too that are popular. Bengalis love their nolen gur (new jaggery) and so the nolen gur ice cream is an instant hit. Similarly, in North India, rabdi, kheer and motichoor ladoo flavours are chart busters. Gujarat, the mecca for ice creams, has paan ice cream as a household name. It aids digestion and acts as a coolant. Kaju Katri and Barfi are other Amul flavours that are reigning supreme. With India being the focus of attention of the entire world, desserts are no exception. And with Indianisation being the buzzword now, ice cream flavours too are getting a makeover.

ayya Morcos is a misfit. She neither fits the archetype of a conventional fashion designer nor the socio-cultural mould of her country. At 33, as per the Lebanese ‘wisdom’, she should have been married and well settled into the family structure of life. She should have become a mother to a couple of kids, if not more, and devoted her life to her husband, kids and family.

At my age, being unmarried is nothing less than a catastrophe. I should have been married in my mid 20s or latest by 28-29. Whenever someone finds out about my marital status and puts it in an equation with my age, their looks get weird “It’s like they are almost saying that I have failed to achieve the main purpose of a woman’s life. Another of her collections, Heterotopies, draws inspiration from French philosopher, social theorist and thinker Michel Foucault’s writings on places and spaces of otherness, and Lois Greenfield’s photography, famous for capturing human form in motion.

She derives her inspiration and ideas from all the reading she does, and for her everything starts from a thought, transforms into philosophy and then takes shape of an interpretation. “I read anything and everything. The stories I hear or read are what inspire me to design. It might just be a line in the book or a character’s ideology,” says Rayya, with her face lighting up at the sheer mention of books. She quickly takes out Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray from her bag, on being asked about her latest indulgence. “I love stories. They make me dream and contribute in making my themes abstract. The journey between abstract stories and actual products, and being inspired by them is the best part of designing for me.”

It is a unique event wherein the members of the comic industry and related fields can unite under one roof to meet customers, target audience and fan base among others. It provides a dedicated space to increase awareness of and appreciation for comics and similar art forms. This event is extremely popular in the west, with the largest in the United States being held in San Diego. What once started in Delhi, has now grown to multiple events across the country. And their mission has evolved to create unique pop culture events and engage with fans across the country.
Promoting Indian comics Indian comics might not have the kind of fan following its western counterparts enjoy, but there is no doubt that the likes of Chacha Chaudhary, Supandi or even Amar
Chitra Katha were an important part of children’s education. Indian comics have come a long way, and with newer entrants in the industry, competition not only gets tougher, but distribution still remains a big challenge. Comic Con offers a pedestal to newcomers, such as Orange Radius, Holy Cow Entertainment, who can work towards establishing a better distribution pattern and bring about a rapport with their audience. “It is a pity that we cannot appreciate fully the level of art that is available in our own country,” laments Abhishek Singh, Co-

Not to mention the fact that travelling to one of the international conventions was very expensive.” Through this spawned the idea for a local comic con. The time it took from the drawing board to being implemented was around six months. “We certainly did move fast and the first event took place in February 2011,” he informs. Activities galore
Comic conventions offer numerous activities for everyone, ranging from workshops to book launches, costume contests (cosplay) to interactions with graphic designers. At the 2013 Mumbai edition, the fest saw a panel discussion with Tere Bin Laden sequel cast, Manish Paul and Pradyuman Singh and Director,
Abhishek Sharma. This is in keeping with the tradition of Comic Con International, where members of the cast of films meet convention goers. Thus, the likes of Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and even Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) attend these conventions to promote their films, and such events are taken seriously. Comic Con India holds immense meaning to its ardent fans. Says Suman Prasad, a chief volunteer at Comic Con (Bangalore chapter), "When I first heard that Comic Con was coming to Bangalore in 2012, I couldn’t believe my ears. The joy I felt was unimaginable. My friend and I visited the event dressed up as Thomson and Thompson, and we were treated as celebrities there!" Adds another Comic Con goer, "The events held in Mumbai have been by far phenomenal. You not only get to meet like-minded people, but it has also helped me expand my network base," says Chirag Kulshrestha. A comic convention does not only offer an outlet for fans, but an interactive and creative environment to foster regional comics industry in India and promote a greater connect with the international conventions.

atmosphere, where the audience requested their favourites and sang along with the band, even jiving on a few of them.
The Twist
Talking of singing along, karaoke artist and host Akanksha feels that singing on a karaoke qualifies very well as live music too.
Many view singing on a karaoke as live music too “Many leading bands do a lot of covers. And a karaoke does the same, with the only difference being the music, which is pre-recorded here. But the performance is very much Live,” says Akanksha, who started with TGIF, Saket and now regularly hosts karaoke at Harry’s Karaoke Lounge and Bar at Ansal Plaza. Apart from outsourcing music and hiring bands, few restaurants also have an in-house facility of live music. For instance, the National Tourism Award winner Park Balluchi restaurant in Hauz Khas Village has a traditionally dressed mandolin player strumming
along around tables. Ashok Jha, Senior Manager, Park Balluchi says, “Music adds to our theme of a classy eating place from Baluchistan, as do the traditional uniforms that the valets and serving staff wear. We prefer to keep it low and melodious so that people can sit and relax, and their conversations are not disturbed.” It is indeed a great experience to have a conversation with someone and have some light music in the background. Why restaurants hire bands to play is anybody’s guess. It gives the place an extra edge in a competition that’s fiercely healthy. But why do bands play at such restrictive platforms? “It’s not restrictive for a new band. It’s like a launchpad that may make them popular among the crowd,” says Smita Jo, lead singer of the former Gurgaonbased band The Doggie. Ronald of Jeremiah 29:11 adds, “Despite the little money that’s offered in restaurants and pubs, we like to play here for the mileage we get. It’s like a platform that showcases our talent for private hosts to get in touch with. But the bottom line remains, we play here because we love playing music, and we can’t imagine sitting idle just because there is no private party.”

Online shopping has its own set of benefits, aiding buyers and sellers alike. Adds Sonali Lalvani Bulchandani, Managing Director, toniQ, an accessories brand, “The E-commerce industry has thrown up some interesting data about the country and its buying patterns, which we would not have necessarily got from an offline store. For our online stores, we often launch Limited Edition pieces that lets us ‘test’ styles and products. This gives us a lot of insight into customer reactions towards certain trends.” Making all kinds of products, from books and electronics to even groceries, available at one’s doorstep seems like a boon to many. It offers easy gifting options, and the perfect surprise for others. Says Ridhu Bhatia, an avid online shopper, “When it comes to gifting, I now turn to online shopping. The online retail industry has brought with it immense benefits, and among them is the opening up of the industry for Tier II and III cities. Adds, Praveen Sinha, Founder and MD, Jabong.com, “Approximately 2 million orders on Jabong.com in the first quarter of 2014, and two-thirds of this have come from Tier II and III locations.” The online industry has been incredibly positive for toniQ, a four-year-old jewellery and bags brand. How does it feel to be a style director of LimeRoad? I always wanted to build something of my own and LimeRoad came very close to my idea of a breakthrough company. The entire idea of discovering great products, sharing with friends and seeing how a particular product will look in an ensemble through a scrapbook is truly a next generation move. Limeroad echoes my values. What do you do on a typical day at work? Style is unique and personal to a woman. And at LimeRoad, we do not ‘dictate style’; it’s about democratising it. We have monthly meetings with Marketing and Visual merchandising teams where we decide the style themes for the month. Then, style templates are released to the scrapbooker who creates looks based on these styles. What do you aim to impart to LimeRoad's community? LimeRoad has the vision of becoming the digital equivalent of the Grand Trunk Road. Soon, it will become ‘the place’ to go when you are looking for exclusive products. It connects 500+ vendors. You will soon see these numbers grow in the next year.

The market is affected by poor internet access & infrastructure Flipkart. As Sonali puts it, “We have been able to reach out to customers in B and C towns that we would not have been otherwise via the brick and mortar format. We have also launched a wider collection giving our customers an opportunity to buy at the start of a season.”
What sets them apart?
With the influx of numerous online shopping portals, competition is at its peak. Some sites offer numerous deals, discounts, coupon cards, exclusive brands, in a bid to attract more visitors, while others offer better service, quicker delivery, etc. “Flipkart has been instrumental in launching several customer-friendly features in the Indian E-commerce market, such as Cash-on-Delivery, Card-on-Delivery, 30-day replacement policy, In-a-Day Guarantee Delivery at scale
(50 cities), the subscription service 'Flipkart First', among others,” emphasises Mehra. LimeRoad.com is a social E-commerce platform that has been active since March 2013, and they roped in Neha Dhupia as their style director. It is a community of users who create scrapbook looks, assemble apparels and accessories in various combinations. “We have even launched the first-ever mobile app for women in India that gives style updates every 30 seconds,” says Suchi Mukherjee, CEO & Co Founder, LimeRoad.com.
Challenges abound
According to Suchi, the major challenges the industry still faces are poor infrastructure and poor internet penetration. She says, “It is also seen that ownership of a personal computer (PC) is still very low in India. Women don’t have access to a PC as much as they want. That’s also a reason why we are focussing so much on Mobile App.” Vaanee Bhatia, Founder, Gritstones.com, says, “The industry is new and very dynamic, thus changes keep happening really fast. It is a challenge for the entire industry to adapt to it.”

reativity is at the heart of every being and kids are often excellent craftspersons, actors, artists and creators, if trained well and shown some direction. Every child has a latent talent in him/her. Of course, the penetration of electronics and gadgets have taken away the time spent on making objet d'art, but then they are blessed with talents that we missed out as youngsters. A desire to live with dignity and security has made Nirmal Chhaya a happy home for senior citizens. W ords | S idd h a rt h M Jos h i
"
That's the trouble with you young people. You think... you know everything. In my life I already forgot more than you ever know.” Every time I feel irritated at the recurrent questionings of my next door neighbour’s grandfather, I remember these words from Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys.
Having spent their lives working hard, earning a living with respect and dignity, the elderly people expect to do the same in the latter phase of their lives
Old age is the most fragile of all the phases of one’s life and needs to be treated with utmost compassion and love. head and shoulders above the rest. I was first skeptical about an old-age home that charged more than what could qualify as a charitable rent. But once I stepped into the premises and observed the place and its inmates, I couldn’t agree more with Geeta Bhasin that the idea was to 'create a happy old-age home’. She elaborates, “We wanted to start a home for senior citizens but all such places I had seen so far were sad and depressing. I wanted to create a happy place, where old people could eat, live and pray happily.” A homeopathic doctor and practitioner, who looks after the home, she refuses to tag a designation with her name, other than the home-doctor.
The idea was to create a happy place for senior citizens How it started?
Managed by the Lachman Dass Devki Devi Bhasin Charitable Trust, this non-profit, non-governmental organisation was started five years ago in 2009, with S K Bhasin as the Chairman. The motive was clear, that of providing not just a place to stay for the elderly, but a cordial home where they were loved and cared for. “I lost an aunt to poor old-age homes. She couldn’t move to Simla with us, and our business wouldn’t allow us to settle in Delhi.
This left a deep mark in my memory, and Nirmal Chhaya was incepted. We made use of some land we had in Delhi and developed this place,” he reminisces, overlooking the beautiful resort-like structure, surrounded by lush green grass and trees, making it difficult to believe its location within the busy Chattarpur area of Delhi.
How it works?
The home is spread over one acre of land and is absolutely cut off from the cacophony of the city, providing a perfect setting for a peaceful stay. S P Khanna, a contended resident of the Nirmal Chhaya family, says, “A little glimpse of the Almighty is possible only by staying quiet.” The

It is a tranquil place where people can stay with open and flexible regulations, for as small a duration as just 2-3 months and as long as they like. The only pre-requisite is a minimum age of 60. People who have their children working abroad and don’t have anyone to take care of them at home form the major chunk of residents. A dedicated staff takes care of them all the time. All their regular old age problems are treated with homeopathy, a peaceful environment and fresh air. The residents have the liberty to take up in-house recreational activities like carrom, playing cards, watching TV, listening to music, attending satsangs
or just taking relaxed walks, or develop a hobby of their own. “This is a time for our spiritual development and its unfair to expect something like this within our children’s households. Staying here gives us a sense of independence. And the food is also perfect to our liking,” says Usha Saxena, who has been living here for a year. “It’s our priority to provide a regimented yet tasteful appetite to our residents. At this age people look forward from one meal to the next. So there is absolutely no compromise on this front,” informs Geeta. Another resident couple, the Goyals, makes it clear, “We have come here willingly. It’s not like we are a burden to our family or discarded by society.”

clampsia literally means a ‘bolt from the blue’, a condition only seen in pregnancy where the pregnant lady starts throwing convulsions. This is associated with very high blood pressure, dysfunction in other organ systems such as kidney, liver, heart and the blood clotting system, and can lead to death of the fetus as well as the mother unless timely help is given to her. It is preceded by a state known as preeclampsia. This is where hypertension in some form occurs in 15-20% of pregnancies, associated with signs of damage to the kidney and proteins start getting excreted in the maternal urine. This is seen in 3-8% of pregnancies and is a major cause (15%-20%) of maternal deaths in developing countries. It can also lead to fetal growth restriction, pre-term birth and neo-natal deaths. Sadly, developing countries still lag behind the West in identifying and managing this condition, mainly because of late presentation of cases. Causes Experts believe that many cases of pre-eclampsia actually begin early in pregnancy, well before any symptom becomes evident, and that they are related to reduced blood flow to the placenta. This could happen if the placenta fails to implant properly in the lining of the uterus and the arteries in that area do not dilate as they should (poor trophoblastic reaction), so less blood gets to the placenta. This, along with placental oxidative stress, can lead to the manifestation of frank disease. Conditions such as chronic hypertension and diabetes can also reduce the blood flow to the placenta. Identifying pre-eclampsia It generally tends to develop after 20 weeks of pregnancy, during or even after delivery. Vigilance is needed until the blood pressure comes down which may take a few weeks. The doctor should
The purpose of this article is to create awareness about this disease so that it can be identified early. September 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

be informed immediately if excessive or sudden swelling of feet or ankles is noticed. This is caused by water retention which can also lead to rapid weight gain. So let the doctor know if more than half a kilo weight is gained in a week. • With severe pre-eclampsia, women may experience other warning signs such as severe or persistent headache • Vision changes, including double vision, blurriness, seeing spots or flashing lights, light sensitivity, or temporary loss of vision • Intense pain or tenderness in the upper abdomen • Nausea and vomiting
Who is at risk for pre-eclampsia? All pregnant women are at risk, but certain factors increase the likelihood of pre-eclampsia, such as: • First pregnancy • Maternal age ≥ 40 years • ≥ 10 years since last baby • BMI ≥ 26 • A previous personal or family history of Pre-eclampsia • Chronic hypertension • Multiple pregnancy (Carrying two or more babies) • Pre-existing medical conditions with blood clotting disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, or an auto-immune disease Risks to the baby and mother • Maternal Complications • Eclampsia • Cerebrovascular haemorrhage • Liver problems • Disturbance of blood coagulation • Kidney failure • Pulmonary oedema • Fetal Complications • Intrauterine growth retardation which leads to low birth weight
• •
Placenta abruption Fetal distress (due to oxygen deprivation) Diagnosis If your blood pressure is elevated (> 140/90) and you have protein in your urine (> 300 mg/24 hrs), you'll be diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, but it is important to remember that hypertension and urine protein are not invariable.
Treatment If you have Pre-eclampsia, delivery of the baby is the best way to protect you and your baby. This isn't always possible, because it may be too early for the baby to live outside of the womb. If delivery isn't possible because its too early in your pregnancy, steps can be taken to manage the condition until the baby can be delivered. These steps include making your blood pressure drop, with bed rest or medicines and keeping a close eye on you and your baby. Prediction of pre-eclampsia during Pregnancy Current method is to use Doppler ultrasound of the uterine artery waveforms as a general screening test for Pre-eclampsia. New markers are constantly being evaluated and estimation of a Placental growth factor (PLGF), a vasodilator which plays a major role in pregnancy associated vasodilatation and increased kidney filtration, is reduced before pre-eclampsia. Measuring the levels of PLGF in maternal blood and its relationship with soluable flt1, another biomarker, shows promise and is readily available. Combining Uterine artery Doppler with biomarkers like PLGF and sflt-1 can improve the positive predictive value of Pre-eclampsia. For the LASIK procedure, the surgeon creates a micro thin corneal flap, which is then lifted to expose the inner cornea for tissue ablation by an excimer laser. The first step of creating the flap can be made either with an ultrathin blade call microkeratome (blade LASIK) or with laser (blade free LASIK). The Femto Second laser introduced the concept of blade-free LASIK and surgeons have found statistically and clinically significant differences in the vision patients achieve when the laser is used to make the corneal flap. The same Femto Second laser can also be used to extract a refractive lenticule without creating a flap on the cornea. A new treatment arrives in India
Participation of private sector
The private sector has evolved a multi-pronged approach to increase accessibility and penetration. It has tackled the issue of lifestyle-related diseases with the development of high-end tertiary care facilities. Also, new delivery models such as day-care centres, single-specialty hospitals, end-of-life care centres, etc., are on the horizon to service larger sections of the population and address specific needs. The public sector is keen to continue to encourage private investment in the healthcare
The Anodyne® Therapy System, a medical device used in the United States of America and Europe, is now available in India. This device is a breakthrough in the treatment of neuropathy—a condition that often leads to non-healing ulcers and amputations. Jennifer Turtzo, International Director of Anodyne Therapy LLC, explains, “This device has been used with exceptional outcomes in the United States for 15 years, and we are thrilled to have our products available for both healthcare professionals and consumers in India.” The system emits infrared light at a specific wavelength of 890 nm. These treatment pads are placed on the affected area of the body for 30-minute sessions. This wavelength of light stimulates the release of nitric oxide, a naturally occurring chemical in the body. The release of this chemical in the microvasculature improves circulation and nerve function, effectively reducing pain and improving healing. The patient feels no pain with this treatment, and there are no known negative side effects or drug interactions. While these products do not cure diabetes or the complications associated with it, they address the burning, stinging and numbing sensations felt by those affected; and simultaneously reduce the risk of development of foot and lower leg ulcers. Jennifer notes, “It is our company’s mission to improve the quality of life for people suffering from peripheral neuropathies and non-healing ulcers. As India has a high number of people suffering from diabetes, it is important that we reach out to both medical and private communities to inform them about this effective treatment approach.”

Let the drums roll Come September, India awakens to a whole new world of festivities. Here is a glimpse of India during this season. W ords | P a ll a v i S i n g h
Navratri Festival
Navratri is that time of the year when the clapping of dandiya sticks are heard and feet tapping music gets you grooving to some most delectable numbers from Bollywood. Though these festive nine days are dedicated to Shakti or the nine forms of Goddess Durga, people across the country have their unique way of celebrating the festival. Navratri is a festival celebrated twice a year in the Hindu months of Chaitra or Vasant, i.e., at the onset of summer, and Sharad, at the onset of winters. Both celebrations centre around the worship of Goddess Shakti. Navratri in Gujarat is a nine-day cultural extravaganza, punctuated with devotional songs and dances, made popular as Dandiya Raas and Garba Raas. Also, jaagran is observed by many, with devotees staying awake through the night to appease the goddess. In West Bengal, devotees commence their Navratri celebrations by worshipping Goddess Durga, till the 10th day when they immerse the idols in water.

Mysore Dasara
136
Onam Onam, a state festival of Kerala, encompasses boat races, song and dance, and lots of good food. The festival keeps alive the legend of an ancient ruler called Mahabali, who is believed to visit his subjects, the people of Kerala, during Onam. Preparations for Onam start 10 days in advance. Homes are cleaned and thresholds are decorated with a carpet of flowers called Pookalam, and there is a feast of delicacies such as the immensely popular rice pudding, payasam. Prayers take place in homes and temples, and grand processions include richly caparisoned elephants,
dancers and musicians, accompanied by fireworks and cheering crowds. The most important feature of Onam celebrations is a grand feast known as Onasadya that is prepared on Thiruonam, an important day of celebrations. Essentially a nine course meal, it comprises 11-13 dishes and is traditionally served on a banana leaf. Kathakali performances and boat races, locally known as Vallamkali, are permanent fixtures during this period. The towns of Kottayam and Aranmula are famous for their boat races. On the 10th day, the state is decked up with fresh flowers. When: September 7 Where: Kerala
Dasara is the most extravagant festival of Mysore. This festival has been celebrated in Mysore with great pomp and show since centuries. It is a Royal festival where the royal family of Mysore performs special pooja. During the 10 day festivities, every street and corner is bustling with activity. The Palace and other important buildings are illuminated. Cultural programmes by famous artists are arranged in the Palace along with Sports, Wrestling, Poet's meet, Food Festival, Film Festival, etc. Some traditional items of the royal family also form part of the procession. The main attraction of the procession is the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari kept in the golden howdah on top of a decorated elephant. The Vijayadashami procession, held on the tenth day begins, at the Mysore Palace and ends at the Banni Mantapa grounds, traveling a distance of about 2.5 miles. The procession is followed by a torch light procession in the evening and a stunning display of fireworks. When: October 3-4 Where: Mysore

The head of Uber says he wants people to stop buying cars. But how dependable are these services? Let's find out... W ords | Nis h a n t N a y y a r
1) Uber
Perhaps, the most convenient and easy to use hire-a-taxi app, it works for realtime bookings for those who need a cab instantly. There are no receipts, no physical money involved and the charges are automatically debited from your credit card account. On booking a
cab, the app sends you driver details like his picture, car mode, etc., which can be shared with your dear ones with a single tap.
2) Olacabs
The app rides high on the wide appreciation of its ‘Ride Now’ feature that allows users to hail the nearest cab. The app is ergonomically built on the line of one-tap features: letting you book single/multiple cabs with a
single touch. A ‘Ride Later’ feature helps you schedule a cab pickup at a later time. Aided by the location settings, a user can see the nearest cab and track its assigned cab's movement on the map. A built-in rate card gives you a heads up of the charges you will incur.
In a day and age when work and leisure keeps you travelling to newer and unknown places, these handy taxi apps come to the rescue. and a blessing, for those all by themselves September 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

This app lets you book, track and know the details of the cab. In addition, it feeds you live updates from traffline.com, informing you of the state of traffic on the route you are taking. It also lets you create and manage a personal profile, reserve cab service, and tag favourite locations so as to get frequent reservations to those places. It also lets you modify, as well as cancel reservations.
4) Taxi Cab Hire 140
This app service incorporates a number of major radio taxi operators in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Pune, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad. Some of the operators under the Taxi Cab Hire India service are Viira and ForShe (women-only cab service in Mumbai), Olacabs, Getmecab, Tabcab etc.

check listed vendors, corresponding prices and availability all in one space. Just download, select your city, the mode of travel and you get a list of all cab vendors and the prices. This is actually one of the smartest travel apps we have used.
6) Taxi For Sure
This company taps the local vendors who are relatively easily available. Moreover, the app is by far the most intuitive as it tracks your travelling history and accordingly suggests similar travel routes on logging-in the next time. This service also turned out to be the most affordable.
7) taxi pixi
This third party app lets users scroll through the type of car and book one according to its availability in your vicinity. This is coupled with a metre that shows the higher/lower likelihood of you getting the cab. Besides being functional in majority of major Indian cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune, the same app can be used in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore.

8) Tab Cab
Similar interface to other apps, with a map and location enabled booking system. What stands out is the airport pick-up tab that showcases the airport (both international and national terminals) and books a pick up right from there. If you are a frequent flier then this is the app for you. Also, one tap cancelling and call the driver feature add up to the peace of mind.
9) Just Cab It
Another radio taxi booking app. The taxi booking is sent directly to all drivers belonging to different cab operators like Mega Cabs, Meru Cabs, Easy cabs et al. Economy taxi, Economy plus taxi, regular radio taxi and premium/SUV taxi can be called through the app. Currently only available in the Delhi NCR region, we managed to get a cab in no time.
10) Meru Cabs
Despite company claims that you can book a cab in 60 seconds, it is a little difficult to do it. The cab, once booked, may not be on time, often you may have to pay more than what was initially confirmed to you.
try these apps too FolksVagn is an easy to use car-pooling app. It works on the wallet feature; hence you can’t book rides if you don’t have money in your online wallet. It charges ` 3.50 per kilometer from each passenger and keeps the amount in escrow until the ride is finished and is approved by both parties. Rs 3 is paid to the owner of the car and remaining 50 paise is charged by FolksVagn. There is no membership fee and charges are on per ride basis.

Someone you don’t exactly like may call on you, so be as nice as possible. Be careful in what you promise on the romantic front, as you may have a trying time keeping it.
Socially, your reputation is likely to soar, as you keep in touch with all. People you have helped may repay your kindness. Deal tactfully with an elderly person in the family. Some of you will succeed in sorting out a financial muddle. Balanced diet will carry you far on the health front.

The fruits of your sound investments have arrived. Someone will reciprocate for all the good that you have done for them. Your enthusiasm over an issue is likely to rub off on the family. Vacation can become a possibility. Some youngsters may opt for summer camp.
A windfall can be expected, as a chance to earn well comes to you. At times it is better to grin and bear it, instead of becoming argumentative. Your winning ideas may have few takers on the professional front, so be more convincing. A long-term romance can begin to lose its fizz, if not nurtured.
Spouse may hold you accountable for neglecting something important. You may need to drop hints about promises made by lover. Road users may need to be alert while travelling. You will need to be assertive enough to share your work in office. Enjoying extra time on the academic front may not be possible.
Good Luck Tip: Remove clutter from the centre of your house to get rid of negative energy.

A changed attitude on the professional front will help you succeed. Delay may make you miss something important on the academic front. Some newlyweds may face adjustment problems. Over familiarity with the one you love threatens to make the relationship stagnant. Don’t get careless on the road.
You will get rid of the feeling of inadequacy and will bounce back on the academic front. Those in business will find things brightening up on the financial front. A swift victory is assured for those in a legal tangle. A positive outlook will help make home a happy place. Enjoying a picnic or excursion with friends is possible.

Mandu - A trip through history

andu portrays the love of the poet-prince Baz Bahadur for his beautiful consort, Rani Roopmati. Her pavilion still gazes down at Baz Bahadur’s palace, a magnificent expression of Afghan architecture. Perched along the Vindhyan ranges at an altitude of 2,000 feet, Mandu was originally the fort-capital of the Parmar rulers of Malwa. Towards the end of the 13th century, it came under the sway of the Sultans of Malwa, the first of whom renamed it Shadiabad-the City of joy. Each of Mandu’s structures is an architectural gem. There are 12 gateways, the most notable being Delhi Darwaza, the main entrance to the fortress city. Jahaz Mahal, a 120 m-long ‘ship palace’ built between the two artificial lakes, Munj Talao and Kapur Talao, is an elegant two-storied palace. It has open pavilions, balconies overhanging the water and open terrace. Hindola Mahal is an audience hall. It derives the name of ‘ Swinging Palace’ from its sloping sidewalls. To the west
of Hindola Mahal, there are several unidentified buildings which still bear traces of their past grandeur. Amidst these is an elaborately constructed well called Champa Baoli which is connected with underground vaulted rooms where arrangements for cold and hot water were made.
Roopmati’s pavilion was originally built as an army observation post. From its hilltop perch, this graceful structure with its two pavilions was a retreat of the lovely queen, from where she could see Baz Bahadur’s Palace and the Narmada flowing through the Nimar plains far below.

ABBA 'Slipping through my fingers’ Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile I watch her go with a surge of that wellknown sadness And I have to sit down for a while The feeling that I'm losing her forever And without really entering her world I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter That funny little girl Slipping through my fingers all the time I try to capture every minute The feeling in it Slipping through my fingers all the time Do I really see what's in her mind Each time I think I'm close to knowing She keeps on growing Slipping through my fingers all the time Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table Barely awake, I let precious time go by Then when she's gone, there's that odd melancholy feeling And a sense of guilt I can't deny What happened to the wonderful adventures The places I had planned for us to go (Slipping through my fingers all the time) Well, some of that we did but most we didn't And why, I just don't know Slipping through my fingers all the time I try to capture every minute The feeling in it Slipping through my fingers all the time Do I really see what's in her mind Each time I think I'm close to knowing She keeps on growing Slipping through my fingers all the time Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture And save it from the funny tricks of time Slipping through my fingers Slipping through my fingers all the time Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

Harry Chapin's ‘Cats in the Cradle’ My child arrived just the other day He came to the world in the usual way But there were planes to catch and bills to pay He learned to walk while I was away And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad You know I'm gonna be like you" And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man on the moon When you comin' home, Dad I don't know when, but we'll get together then You know we'll have a good time then My son turned ten just the other day He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok And he walked away but his smile never dimmed And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah You know I'm gonna be like him" And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man on the moon When you comin' home, Dad I don't know when, but we'll get together then You know we'll have a good time then Well, he came from college just the other day So much like a man I just had to say "Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while" He shook his head and said with a smile "What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys See you later, can I have them please" And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man on the moon When you comin' home son I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad You know we'll have a good time then I've long since retired, my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind" He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu, But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad It's been sure nice talking to you" And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me He'd grown up just like me My boy was just like me

Neil Diamond 'Brooklyn Roads' If I close my eyes I can almost hear my mother Callin', "Neil, go find your brother Daddy's home, and it's time for supper Hurry on" And I see two boys Racin' up two flights of staircase Squirmin' into Papa's embrace And his whiskers warm on their face Where's it gone Oh, where's it gone Two floors above the butcher First door on the right Life filled to the brim As I stood by my window And looked out on those Brooklyn Roads I can still recall The smell of cookin' in the hallways Rubber drying in the doorways And report cards I was always Afraid to show Mama'd come to school And as I'd sit there softly crying Teacher'd say, "He's just not trying He's got a good head if he'd apply it" But you know yourself It's always somewhere else I built me a castle With dragons and kings And I'd ride off with them As I stood by my window And looked out on those Brooklyn Roads Thought of going back But all I'd see are strangers' faces And all the scars that love erases But as my mind walks thru those places I'm wonderin' What's come of them Does some other young boy Come home to my room Does he dream what I did As he stands by my window And looks out on those Brooklyn Roads

Haseen Bano CSE - Delhi Base Customer feedback: A passenger travelling on August 11, 2014, appreciated the service provided by Haseen during check-in. Internal feedback: Haseen is a good and a diligent staff member. Experience with SpiceJet: I am extremely satisfied and happy on being associated with SpiceJet. Ever since I joined this organisation, I have learned many things that help me in both my professional and personal growth. I will always serve passengers to the best of my ability, and I know that I will grow in this company.
Passenger feedback: I was on a flight back from Kolkata to Delhi in August. It was the end of a two-week long hectic trip and I was exhausted. All I needed was a good flight back to recover from it. Your executive at the check-in counter, Avik Adhikary, ensured just that. He not only provided me with a pleasant check-in experience, but also gave me a good seat in the flight. That is a minor thing for airlines as seats were available in those preferred locations, but the fact that Avik thought of the same and made my experience very satisfying is commendable. Internal feedback: Avik has always been a motivating figure to the team and keeps up to the expectations of any assignment given to him. He completes the task in time and also helps others. A good team player, he has been appreciated by the most of our team members for the energy level he displays. Internal feedback: Gangoutri is a processdriven and a customer-centric staff, who ensures that customers feel the ‘wow’ factor while travelling with SpiceJet. She also keeps an eye for detail, ensuring utmost customer satisfaction. Experience with SpiceJet: I joined SpiceJet in May 2011. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of the airline and ensure that SOCCH is practised in all aspects. I am proud of being a part of Team Guwahati.
Naripender Singh Cabin Crew In-Charge ahmedabad Base Passenger feedback: I would like to appreciate the customer-focussed approach and care shown by Naripender Singh while I was onboard the AMD-HYD flight in July. I am sure team members like him will make the flying experience for travellers more satisfactory and help improve the patronage. Keep up the good work. ...................... I was flying in July on your flight from Dubai to Ahmedabad, and found the services of Naripender Singh and his team appreciable. Naripender is a smart person and knows how to diplomatically handle all kinds of customers. Very rarely do we find such staff with such unique ability to manage guest relations. I hope to fly again with Naripender and his team. Experience with SpiceJet: It's almost three years that I am a part of SpiceJet family and everyday is a new learning.Everyday I find SpiceJet family standing by my side at all point time which gives me that energy and that enthusiasm to give my best shot on my every flight. When my guest onboard leaves the aircraft saying "it was a wonderful flight and it was amazing flying with you" .My heart says"I like it" and that makes my day."SOCCH"helps me grow everyday because at the end of the day what matters is 'SOCCH'. Chandni Puri Cabin Crew In-Charge Delhi Base Passenger feedback: I travelled on your Kolkata to Mumbai flight on June 21. I have to appreciate Chandni’s skills. She was truly professional in her service and her approach towards work. At a point when she came to the service area, she seemed annoyed, yet in the next instant, she was talking politely, and with a smile, to a passenger. She was trying to help a fellow colleague and assisted in her work. I could notice all this as I was on the first seat. She was also very good in diction and her talks. ............................ On July 6, I travelled in your flight from Delhi to Kochi. The checkin procedure was smooth and the flight landed on time. The aircraft was very well maintained and the staff was exceptionally helpful, specially the work of crew in-charge Chandni Puri. She was very caring towards my mother. Other team members like Ankush also did a great job to make our journey smooth. We will surely again choose SpiceJet on our next travel, and will certainly recommend the airline to our friends and family members. Experience with SpiceJet: I would like to thank to each and evry pax who aprreciated my work, who praised my experience and send it to the managment I actually feel so proud when I received managment appreciation. Now I am more happy while working with a big smile and this motivates me to face and handle new and tougher situations now. Thank you SpiceJet for being so supportive ...I really feel so proud that I am a part of it.
