We realise that the last minute traveller who generally travels due to an emergency is often faced with very high ticket prices. We have therefore decided that in the domestic sector, the “very last moment inventory” ie available seats within 4 hours of departure would be sold at a hefty discount, normally upto forty percent of the selling price.

Aviation the most complex of all businesses is high on technology, very competitive with complex regulations and low profit margins. This challenge is often reflected in airlines going under as also witnessed in the country’s aviation sector. There is however no cause for worry as most of the airlines are actively moving forward to bridge the gap and it gives hope that the growth in the sector would soon acquire its earlier pace.

On my way back to Delhi in @airindiain Alliance from Gorakhpur: Iftar time was nearing so I walked up to cabin crew member Manjula, asked for some water. She gave me a small bottle. I asked, “can I pls have 1 more bottle since I’m fasting?” Manjula replied, “why did you leave your seat? You pls return to your seat.” Minutes later she arrived with two sandwiches and said, “please don’t hesitate to ask for more.” Of course I didn’t need more. They were more than adequate for me. What was the most satisfying was Manjula’s heartwarming gesture. Rifat Jawaid

Rifat Jawaid, a journalist, was in for a pleasant surprise when he took Alliance Air flight 9I 810 on May 16, 2019, from Gorakhpur to New Delhi. It was Ramzan and Rifat Jawaid was fasting. While on the flight, he was about to break his fast and requested the cabin crew for some water. The cabin crew immediately provided him water and requested him to be seated. To Jawaid’s surprise, one of the cabin crew members, Manjula, approached him with two sandwiches and an extra bottle of water. She also told that if he needs more, he should not hesitate to ask. Manjula, who joined Alliance Air in 2001, has been exhibiting exemplary services throughout her years of service. She has been appreciated by passengers on many occasions. Tennis Tournament Captains Nitin Sharma and Arun Mehra made Air

India proud at the British Airways - Lufthansa Charity International Airline Tennis Tournament held in Pattaya, Thailand. In spite of overwhelming participation from major global airlines, Capt Sharma won his title in the highest draw (category 4.5) in a thrilling final against Emirates and Capt Mehra won gold in his category too. Together, the dynamic duo also won the men’s doubles title and showcased their incredible talent with sheer determination, passion and hard work in spite of the hectic schedules of flying the Dreamliner (B787) across the globe. They are extremely grateful of the support extended by the company and colleagues alike for their constant encouragement and motivation.

At the top of his game Hailing from a small village in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, Jayanti Prasad grew up in a modest family. He has been a meritorious student, graduating with flying colours in both school and college. Post completing his engineering, he was selected as a graduate engineering trainee in Vayudoot Airline in New Delhi. An ever-smiling man, Dwayne is a very humble employee of Air India and treats all with utmost respect and dignity, a reason why he is so loved by all the employees of the airline.

ART

A RIOT OF COLOURS A two-day art extravaganza turned Kumartuli (potter’s quarters) in Kolkata into an open-air exhibition The creative side of Kolkata manifested itself with Rang Matir Panchali (the ballad of colour and clay), a two-day extravaganza organised recently, to celebrate World Art Day. The event was ideated, curated and managed by Creocraft, a Kolkata-based creative group, and hosted at Kumartuli, the artisans’ hub and also the epicentre of the city’s creativity. It is where the idols of Hindu deities, especially Devi Durga, are chiselled out of clay. Rang Matir Panchali sparked a dialogue between the traditional techniques of making idols and other artworks, and adopting different media and methods. A myriad group of 30-odd artisans from Kumartuli along with students of the Government College of Art & Craft and three residents of Pavlov Institute joined hands with renowned Durga Puja theme-makers and ideators Sushanta Pal and Partha Dasgupta to turn the entire locale of Kumartuli into a giant canvas of creativity. Almost every wall was painted and every corner was buzzing with artisans busy with their work. It was surprising

42 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

to see the nondescript bylanes of the potter’s quarters coming to life as if at the touch of a magician’s wand. The freshly-painted houses in vibrant hues of red and yellow; giant faces of Goddess Durga; graffiti on walls of local buildings; rough models of idols made with straw and bamboo waiting to be shaped with clay and strategicallyplaced larger-than-life installations the locality was a feast for the eyes. The installation that drew the most attention was of a classic and iconic yellow Ambassador taxi painted with Devi Durga and her children, riding with the demon king Mahishasura at the steering wheel, in a folk art form. Others depicted a tea shop with a lifelike tea vendor and another of a lady sitting on a cot with the face of the Goddess watching over her. In the evening, spectacular illuminations added a different dimension to the exhibits and the installations seemed to come to life. Kumartuli, during those two days, almost appeared like a themed Durga puja pandal with endless artworks and installations adding to its

charm. An exhibition of photographs that depicted the history of Kumartuli accompanied by a voice-over, narrating the life and history of the local artisan community was a major attraction. What was more interesting was the timing of the event. The dates coincided with that of the Basanti Durga Puja or Chaitra Navaratri celebrations. According to some Hindu scriptures, this was the time when Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura, and when the festival was originally celebrated, before Lord Rama popularised it by conducting the ritual in autumn, before His battle with Ravana. The organisers of the event termed it a carnival and not an exhibition, to justify the exuberant mood and the magnitude of the festival. The harmonious blending of tradition and the collective effort of bringing to life the religious and cultural ethos of the Bengali community reiterated the fact that artists look at daily routine for inspiration. The chief of the organising agency, Sabyasachi Chatterjee, was elated at the tremendous appreciation and cooperation that the concept received from the artisans and inhabitants of Kumartuli as well as the people of the city. He hopes to be able to “repeat such a performance in the indigenous artisan hub of the city in the forthcoming years as well.” - Sukanya Ghosh

With quite a few stunning pieces by modern masters, including A Bullet from a Shooting Star by Alex Chinneck, which features an upside down electricity pole perched precariously on one of its edges, and the Quantum Cloud by Antony Gormley that combines quantum physics and contemporary art, my walk is peppered with colourful vistas from another world. But this is not all of the art that you see on the streets of London. The city’s global soul has made it a hotbed for some of the most creative artworks from around the world. The streets around Shoreditch and Mackney in East London are awash with colours and images of all kinds, out of which the animated figures of Frenchman Thierry Noir stand out. Said to have been the first to have used art to express feelings on the Berlin Wall, Noir’s works in London feature his iconic cartoon-like figures.

Standing atop the London Eye, I breathe in the cool air as I look around, taking in a bird’s-eye view of the legendary city. This trip is a recce for all the destinations I plan to visit during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (to be held from May 30 till July 14), returning to England, the birthplace of the gentleman’s game, after 20 long years. I start my trip with a few of the usual suspects; a flying round through Buckingham Palace

From the vibrant present, I time travel into the city’s past, that is said to date back to the era of the Romans, at the London Mithraeum. I have always loved London for its almost mythical association with its history and nowhere is it more pronounced than at the Mithraeum, which is a temple said to have been built by a sect of Romans. Today, it is a cultural space which tells the story of the sect and its links with the region through artefacts that archaeologists have discovered at the site, which is located on one of London’s lost rivers, the Walbrook. A local guide says that around 2,000 years ago when Londinium was founded by the Romans, this river marked the limits of their first settlement. In the 3rd century AD, nearly 200 years after the founding of London, a Roman Londoner built a temple dedicated to God Mithras next to the river.

the Regent’s Canal. With Venetian buildings lining the water, the picturesque locality is a pleasure to discover. No trip to London can be complete without a visit to its markets. The Greenwich market located within the eponymous UNESCO Heritage Site is my favourite spot to sample authentic dishes from the city. Not only does it offer the classic fish and chips, but also spicy Jamaican curry, chocolaty churros and chicken tikka, which I dig into while heading to the Thames, which is literally a five-minute-walk away.

Today, audio guides retell the fascinating story of how this temple was constructed. The next destination on my list is discovered by fluke, as I go hunting for a watering hole. The Attendant, where a Victorian-era lavatory has been converted into a café, with a stunning wrought iron fence, serves delectable cakes and pastries along with single estate coffee. Sip cold brew amongst the ornate cisterns or click a photograph or two against the urinals. Tea drinkers can head to Twinning’s Café at the Strand, which has been bringing in tea since 1706 for the British Royal family. On my previous trips, I have enjoyed Thames’ cruises on various kinds of boats but this time, I opt for a kayak ride that takes me around Little Venice! If you are surprised, so was I when I had first heard of this quaint neighbourhood around the junction of the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal and

Reconnaissance of offbeat London over, next I head to the Oval, the hallowed grounds of cricket, the iconic stadium where India will face defending champion Australia on June 9. A tour through the stadium has me marvelling at the exquisitely curated greens, which can be viewed from the panoramic commentary box. My next destination is the sacred temple of cricket, the Lord’s cricket ground. I head to the Players Dressing Room, where the honours board (which holds names of all the centurions and five wicket holders) and the balcony (where former captain of the Indian cricket team Sourav Ganguly had twirled his shirt after India chased down a record total), both hold fond memories for any Indian, especially a Bengali! As dusk descends and I walk away from the Lord’s, I can almost hear the cheers of fans as they rejoice a good game of cricket! London, this summer, is definitely going to be an exciting place to be in.

ART GOES

PLACES

Contemporary Indian artists are traversing the globe, with exhibitions and festivals being held at various destinations both outside and within the country’s boundaries. Georgina Maddox explains why this is good news for the genre This summer as we pack our bags to set out for Europe or America for vacations, we can plan a tour or two of the several international galleries showcasing art from our country. These international exhibitions, along with the numerous domestic ones, are giving a new fillip to Indian art and its followers. Indian art has been travelling over borders since the early 1960s, but it is only in the last five years that modern and contemporary Indian art have established a pecking order among the top ranks. This year is auspiciously marked with India’s representation at the Venice Biennale, the world’s largest and most reputed art extravaganza. There are not just eight Indian artists showcasing at the official India Pavilion at the Biennale (which is on till November 24), but artists Gauri Gill, Shilpa Gupta and Soham Gupta are represented as part of the main exhibition of the Biennale curated by Ralph Rugoff, an American curator and the man behind the 2019 edition of the event. The India Pavilion was made possible by the joint efforts of several parties: the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, (KNMA) acting as curator; the National Gallery of Modern Art, as commissioner and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as partners. The exhibition at the Pavilion, “Our Time for a Future Caring” has been curated by Roobina Karode, the chief curator at KNMA, and reflects upon Mahatma Gandhi as the underpinning force behind the selected works by artists like Nandalal Bose, MF Husain, Atul

Dodiya, Jitish Kallat and GR Iranna among others. “India’s modern and contemporary art history is not linear, it draws from vernacular streams, symbols of heterodox faiths, a populated iconographic field and abstraction,” says Karode, explaining her selection of artists and the theme underlying the exhibits — the philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi. “It is a joyous moment for Indian art that there is an India Pavilion at Venice Biennale and I only hope it continues in its subsequent editions as well,” says Dodiya. Within the country too, artists are finding exciting platforms at several art events, both commercial and non-commercial, being held throughout the year; and not just in the metropolitans but in twotier and three-tier cities as well. On December 2018 the Serendipity Art Festival in Goa unpacked its fourth edition, featuring national and international artists like Sophie Cali and Paul McCarthy, Phyllida Barlow, Anita Dube, Mayank Austen Soofi and David Soin Tappeser, to name a few. For the 2019 edition, organisers of Serendipity Arts have announced their team and theme, with Dr Jyotindra Jain and Sudarshan Shetty heading the visual arts section. In Kerala, the Kochi Biennale saw its fourth edition, curated by artist Anita Dube, successfully conclude in March 2019. In Chennai, the Photo Biennale kicked off its exhibition early this year, curated by Pushpamala N. The event’s approach has been to demystify the different genres of photography for the common man through large-scale exhibitions in public spaces such as fishing harbours, abandoned

festivals, like the Kochi Biennale, have made their way into the international art calendar,” she says.

The India Art Fair in Delhi, under the able guidance of Jagdip Jagpal, successfully organised its 11th edition this year, with new national and international galleries, where noted Chinese artist Ai-Wei-Wei made a splash with his work, Artist Atul Dodiya: “It is along with a contingent from South and a joyous moment for In- Southeast Asia.

The Indian art market has been valued at USD 223 million, which is just a fraction of the USD 56-billion (approx) of the global one, according to a report by KPMG-FICCI. There is, however, a huge projection for growth. As per Anders Petterson, founder and MD of Art Tactic Report, which provides an in-depth market analysis, even festivals like Serendipity and Kochi Biennale, which are not targeted at sales, are important to generate interest in art. “We have been conducting a documentation of the art market, but over the years we found that to be dry. In that scenario, non-commercial projects are as important for the growth of the art market as is saleable art,” he avers.

dian art that there is an India Pavilion at Venice Biennale and I only hope it continues in its subsequent editions as well.”

What does all this art activity mean? It means different things for the common man, the artist, the curator, the collector and the local administration. For veteran art critic and curator Uma Nair, art festivals are a meeting ground for the past and the present. “Festivals in art and culture are required to engage audiences — it isn’t about big or small it’s about giving a voice to the arts. It’s about celebrating across cultures and media and techniques and sensibilities,” she says. New Delhibased gallerist Renu Modi says, “Indian art has come of age. There are events where our artists are being noticed by the global art community and

As I happily munch on hearty snacks in at the restaurant The Wine Company in the capital, I can’t help but notice that all the dishes – right from the sun-dried tomato kulcha (an Indian bread made from flour, milk and butter)served with hummus to the goat cheese churros – have a unique texture and flavour profile. Goa-based Sarah Todd, the chef behind the spread, points out, “Every dish that comes out of my kitchen has to be wholesome.” I take her word for it. Being a former model in Australia, Todd is no stranger to the importance of healthy and nutritious food. Her claim to fame, however, has been participating in the 6th season of MasterChef Australia in 2014, where she whipped up the quintessential Indian dish of alu gobhi (a stew of potato and cauliflower). “India is at the heart of my kitchen,” she says, and continues, “I was introduced to the cuisine by my Punjabi mother-in-law. Interestingly, it was in India that I realised my entrepreneurial dream; I’m heading three specialty restaurants here - one

Mother to a smart sevenyear-old son, she has written a book titled The Healthy Model Cookbook and hosted several television series documenting her travels in India.

58 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

Would you say that with your restaurants you have broken the notion that Indian food does not pair well with wine? I think that internationally Indian food is conceived as an option meant for quiet dinners at home. So, with all the dishes that I have created, I’ve tried to show the world that an experience with Indian cuisine can also be one of fine dining, which can be enjoyed with a glass of wine. Pairing is simple. Flavours should complement each other and not be contradictory. For example, an extremely flavourful and heavy curry does not pair well with a light pinot as it will overpower the dish. You can pair red wine with a tuna dish where the fish has been marinated in strong flavouring ingredients. That is what

we have tried to show with our menu at The Wine Rack; it’s actually amazing. We have tried to build it as a place for not just wine connoisseurs but for everybody, even those who just want to enjoy a glass of frozen Rosé, like we do at The Wine Company. We wanted to show the people that an experience does not have to be complicated for it to be enjoyable. You’ve mentioned that coming to India was not the initial plan... It’s true. But then again, I have had some of the most amazing experiences of my life in India; I’ve even brought my family here. And although I keep travelling back to Australia, returning to India feels like coming home. Given the chance, I’d like to stay and work here for as long as I can. If you had asked me what I would be doing five years ago, I would have had no idea of what to say. I never predicted this but I wouldn’t change even the smallest thing. I’ve learnt so much and am still learning; I’ve grown as person and I love it here. You have mentioned (and repeatedly so) that at Antares, you were a trainee first and then became an entrepreneur. How has that journey been? Honestly, it has been fantastic. To grow from a trainee to an entrepreneur is, I

feel, one of the hardest transitions. As a trainee, you are looking for reassurance and you are always aware that if you fail, there is someone to break the fall. But now, I’m the person everyone is coming to for suggestions and problems and it’s me who has to come up with solutions. I did face a few setbacks in the beginning but I worked through all of them. It was a tedious change for me and took almost 18 months of managing my own restaurant before I was able to ‘get in my groove’, or so to speak! (Laughs) In your book, you mention the meals that you cook for your son are both delicious and nutritious. “I have had some of the I travel and tend to eat out a lot. most amazing experi- Therefore, my aim has always ences of my life in India. been to have a balanced meal. I always have tralia, returning to India a light and healthy breakfast and feels like coming home,” add plenty of greens like spinach Sarah Todd and broccoli to something as simple as eggs and toast. Often, breakfast can be an unbalanced meal, with an unnecessary amount of carbohydrates,

60 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

which is not healthy, as a nutritious meal needs to have the right amounts of proteins, minerals and carbohydrates. With Indian food, it’s very easy to balance a dish because there are so many options available. For example a simple dish of roti and alu-gobhi can be balanced with the equally simple paneer (cottage cheese). Balance is one of the most important aspect of any dish, if you are looking to up the ante on nutrition without compromising on the flavour. Is your son Phoenix as fond of Indian food as you are? Oh yes! Paratha (shallow-fried flatbread) and eggs are his favourite breakfast dishes. And like me, he also loves any keema (minced meat) preparation! What are your plans for the future? I love food, and I love the industry as well. I want to keep exploring different products and trying different things that will make people’s lives easier and healthier. I want to open new restaurants; I love managing eateries as it’s just so rewarding. As of now, we’re actually working towards revamping Antares and getting it up and running.

MITIGATION MEASURES FOR CONTROL OF AIR POLLUTION

Principal Secretary, Environment, Govt. of Maharashtra

“MPCB PERSPECTIVE”

Air Quality Monitoring Network in the State of Maharashtra The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has developed a monitoring network by setting up of manual AAQMS (Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations) across the state under the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Programme at 78 selected locations and State Ambient Air Quality Programme at 3 selected locations. The board has established a network of Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations at 23 locations across Maharashtra. These monitoring stations generate real-time data of all the notified parameters of National Air Quality Standards, 2009. The data is online transferred to Air Quality Index (AQI) server setup at CPCB, New Delhi. A suitable action plan will be developed from the data generated through these monitoring programmes. Preparation of comprehensive Action Plan for Air Quality improvement of 17 non-attainment cities Central Pollution Control Board has identified 17 non-attainment cities in the State of Maharashtra and directed MPC Board to prepare Action Plan for improvement of Air Quality in above 17 cities such as Akola, Amravati, Aurangabad, Badlapur, Chandrapur, Jalna, Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Latur, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur, Pune, Solapur, Sangli and Ulhasnagar. Accordingly, MPC Board has conducted series of workshops/meeting with above corporations/ stakeholders and requested to prepare action plan as per template given by CPCB, Delhi. Further, State Level Air Quality Monitoring Committee has reviewed action plan submitted

Further, CPCB has approved action plans submitted by MPC Board and now same are under implementation stage. National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) Government of India introduced “National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)-India” as national level strategy for reduction in air pollution levels at both regional and urban scales. The goal of NCAP is to meet the prescribed annual average ambient air quality standards at all locations in the country in a stipulated timeframe. In line with the gaps drawn from the ongoing government initiatives and existing air pollution status, the need is felt for augmentation of efforts towards mitigation of air pollution in mission mode. Comprehensive strategy in NCAP is being envisaged to plug the gaps in maintenance of air quality in the country. In view of the above, for implementation of National clean Air Programme in Maharashtra, MPCB has planned to prepare action plan for the state with outsourcing to reputed R&D institutes and educational institutes. Noise Mapping in 27 Municipal Corporation cities in association with NEERI, Nagpur Hon’ble High Court, Bombay, has directed the state government to undertake the exercise of Noise Mapping in the State of Maharashtra. Commuter choice programme -

Commuter Choice Programme Continuous growth of metro cities is inevitable which reflects in higher commuter travel. Due to nonavailability of last mile connectivity along with comfortable commute conditions, many commuters choose personal / private mode of transportation for daily commute which results in traffic congestion. Traffic congestions have impact such as excessive fuel wastage and hot spot in terms of emissions. Commuter choice programme having multiple initiatives with aim to reduce the commutation traffic congestion by collaborating various responsible stakeholders such as employers, employee and regulatory authorities. In this, various initiatives such as carpooling, staggered working hours for employees, transit transportation service for employees from employers etc. are identified to promote public transport and reduce the inflow of private vehicles by behavioural change in commuters. Employers should track the employee commutation pattern (mode and kilometres) with associated emissions and efforts should be made to reduce them voluntarily. USEPA and European Union have implemented similar programme. MPCB is rolling out this initiative under Nation Clean Air Programme with pilot implementation at BKC and Lower Parel area, Mumbai.

Thus fly ash is used in concrete, mines, landfills and dams. Uses of Fly Ash The major uses of fly ash are listed below: • Used in the manufacture of Portland cement. • Typically used for embankment construction. • Used as a soil stabilisation material. • Fly ash is also used as a component in the production of flow able fill. • Used as the filler mineral in asphalt road laying to fill the voids. • Fly ash is used as component in geoploymers. • Used in Roller compacted concrete dams. • Used in the manufacture of fly ash bricks. Comprehensive Environment Pollution Index CPCB, Delhi, has declared 94 clusters all over the India as critically Polluted Area out of which 5 industrial clusters are in the state of Maharashtra, including Chandrapur, Dombivali, Tarapur, Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad. The board has prepared Action Plan for 5 critically polluted areas and 3 severally polluted areas which will help to mitigate emission levels arising out of industrial area. Also, the Action Plan has been submitted to CPCB, New Delhi and its implementation is in progress.

SECRETS OF THE

STAR-SHAPED FORT 64 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

shubh-yatra.in

The star-shaped engraving on the ceiling of the main gate of the fort

Almost forgotten, the spectacular Manjarabad Fort in Karnataka, is a design marvel even today, says Ami Bhat “It was a fine clear day as the commander peered through the spyglass. Spanning the wild waves of the Arabian Sea, he rested his gaze on what seemed to be a small boat filled with men in uniform. He scrawled his observation onto a parchment and quickly dispatched it to the Tiger of Mysore via a horseman. He would know what to do.” Standing along the same wall, centuries later, I gazed in the same direction imagining the scene above, about which I had read in an old history book. There are several local legends surrounding the impregnable fort that looks like a star and was one of the most important defence fortifications of Tipu Sultan, the erstwhile ruler of Mysore (now Mysuru). It was true that the fort I stood in had no visible hand in a battle. However, its design and construction made it evident that the Manjarabad Fort must have been an excellent lookout post. At one end were the green plains of the Western Ghats while from where I stood, you could spot the Arabian Sea between the hilly peaks. It wasn’t just the location but also its unusual shape that made this fort unique.

The birth of the fort

Historians date the star-shaped fort to the

year 1792. Commissioned by Tipu Sultan, the Manjarabad Fort was designed by a French military architect – Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban. The fort arose at the time when the British East India Company was fighting against Tipu Sultan who, in turn, allied himself with the French. With a fierce opposition came an innate need to protect all fronts. Thus was the need to build a lookout post between his capital Srirangapatnam and the nearest port – Mangalore (presentday Mangaluru).

Fortified design

It took around 252 steps for me to get to a height of 3,240 ft above sea level. There seemed to be no other way to go up. Scaling the wall was an impossible feat – not just owing to its height but also, its shape. The walls of the fort are not straight but slope upwards to its pointed ridges. Surrounding these tall granite and limestone walls was a moat, which was possibly filled with dangerous creatures to thwart the creeping enemy. The eight-point star-shaped design greeted me as I reached the top. Unless you have a drone or are on a hot air balloon, the only way you can capture the star-shaped construction

66 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

Commissioned by Tipu Sultan, the Manjarabad Fort was designed by a French military architect – Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban is on an etched ceiling at its main gate. I admired the ingenuity of the French architect who had blend his creation with Islamic filigree designs on the domed gateway. A short zigzag path had me emerge onto the main fort area.

Curious cellars and secret passages

Army barracks and store rooms lined the narrow passages along the star-shaped walls. The fort walls towered over them – broken at regular intervals with musket gaps and cannon holds. A deep well formed the epicentre of the fort. Subterranean armouries surrounded this well. These might have been the perfect place to store or even hide gunpowder during the fort’s heyday but for me, they were a respite from the blistering heat outside.

Somewhere in this layout, were rumours of an underground passage – all the way to Tipu’s capital. Legend has it that Tipu Sultan used it to arrive at the fort. The first time he got here, the fort was shrouded by fog. This led to its name; manjar refers to fog in Kannada. The crumbling walls of the fort seemed to be whispering its many secrets... Where none could breach it, many seem to have forgotten it. There were lots still buried in the sands of time. Walking along the edges, I failed to discern the murmurs of these walls. Maybe, I will return at a different time to try my luck again! The author is an avid traveller and blogger and the views expressed in this article are her own

Indore

The city offers a spectacle of majestic palaces and a mouth-watering cuisine. Aruna Chandaraju explores it in one day It is a city where the past and the present stand in unison. Where ancient palaces rub shoulders with modern high-rises and where a magnificent past is complemented by a Smart City fuelled by a technologydriven urban revolution. This is Indore, in Madhya Pradesh, where culture and cuisine blend to create a unique experience. The state’s most populous city and also the cleanest in the country, having being declared so over the past two years, was founded in the 16th century. A legacy that lives on in the several heritage monuments built by the members of the Holkar dynasty, who ruled the region for a long time. It is also the place where the Indore gharana of classical music, a vocal tradition, was born and nurtured. There is plenty to see and do in Indore but what do you do if you only have one day for all of this? You wake up very early and start exploring a city that comes to life almost at the crack of dawn. A good start would be the Pipliyapala Regional Park and Nehru Park. Located on the outskirts of the city, Pipliyapala Regional Park, with an eponymous lake, is a nature lover’s paradise. Several local residents flock to this green area for a walk every morning. If you are not a walker, you can settle 6:00 am down for a spot of birdwatching in its gardens, which have been built in diverse styles like Mughal and French. The park shelters a large variety of avian life, which are best sighted during sunrise. Take a quick boat ride; there is a wide choice of boating facilities here. Nehru Park is another green space for a morning stroll, particularly if you are accompanied by children or the elderly. Nestled in the heart of the city, this zoological park boasts battery-operated cars to take visitors around, a mini train, a swimming pool and a children’s hobby centre.

>>8:00 am Indore can get hot during summers, but mornings are pleasant. So after my walk, I decide to try some of the city’s legendary traditional breakfast dishes. Whatever your breakfast preferences may be, here, a must-try is the Indori poha. Culinary legends say this is where the popular savoury dish, cooked with flattened rice, was invented! From upmarket hotels to small roadside snack stalls, you will find some of the country’s tastiest versions of the dish in Indore. It is generally served with jalebi, a deep-fried dessert dipped in sugar syrup, for breakfast. Doodh-jalebi (a combination of milk and jalebi) is also very popular here. >>9:00 am Energised, I head for another landmark, Gomatgiri, which should ideally be on your morning itinerary. The hillock has a large statue of Lord Gomateshwara, almost 21 ft high, standing atop it along with 24 marble temples dedicated to Jain tirthankaras (saints). It is also the perfect point from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city. On Sundays, Gomatgiri temple’s bhojnalaya (restaurant) serves the popular daal-baati (a lentil-based dish). Next on the list can be the Rajwada Palace and the stunning Kanch Mandir. The seven-storeyed Rajwada Palace, which is popularly known as the Holkar Palace, presents a blend of Mughal, Maratha and French architectural styles and was built in 1747 by the founder of the Holkar dynasty, Malhar Rao Holkar. Standing at the centre of the busy Khajuri Bazaar area, it has an imposing wooden entrance fortified with iron studs. The palace, whose three lower storeys are made of stone and the upper four of wood, is noted for its superb craftsmanship. It is sur1:00 pm rounded by well-maintained and landscaped gardens.

1. Stunning interiors of Indore’s Kanch Mandir 2. Mouthwatering sweetmeats being prepared at Sarafa Bazaar

A must-visit on Indore’s attraction list is Chhatri Bagh, which has chhatris or cenotaphs built in commemoration of the Holkar dynasty members. They are imposing and architecturally impressive structures and among these the outstanding one is the one of Malhar Rao Holkar I. The cenotaphs are illuminated by late evening, hence we recommend you go there later in the day.

Close to Chhatri Bagh is Bada Ganapati Temple, so called because its presiding deity is an approximately 25-ft-tall idol of Lord Ganesha. Note that it is open beyond the closing hours of other attractions like the Central Museum, Jain Mandir or Rajwada Palace. In between visits to all these places, drive past and have a quick look at the landmark Town Hall. Popularly called the Mahatma Gandhi Hall, it boasts IndoGothic style architecture and a clock tower. 2

You have got to squeeze in some time for shopping in between all the sightseeing and gorging on local food. The best buys would be Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees and dress materials, Gond paintings, tussar textiles, dress materials in Bagh and Dabu prints, as well as bead-craft, bamboo items, carpets/dhurries and lacquerware. The state’s bell-metal artefacts are famous, in which figures of animals, warriors/gods atop chariots, and miniature horse/bullock-carts are among the best-sellers.

From eating healthy to exercising right, there is no stone that our Bollywood stars leave unturned in their quest to stay fit. From kickboxing to Zumba and from belly dancing to Pilates, the fitness brigade of the Hindi film industry has tried every type of exercise. And as these celebrities flood social media with information about their fitness routines, fans follow suit. One of the commonest genres of exercise among the film fraternity is yoga and thanks to star-backing, this ancient wellness practice has had a phenomenal rise in its popularity among masses. The phenomenon, however, is not restricted to India alone, as yoga is being embraced across the world. Ahead of International Day of Yoga, celebrated across the world on June 21, we jog down memory lane to track how yoga has become a favourite, especially among millennials who, even five years back, preferred to sweat it out at the gym instead of rolling out the yoga mat.

72 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

The credit behind popularising yoga among star-struck fans goes primarily to Bollywood stars Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Kareena Kapoor Khan. While her enviable figure was always the talk of Tinseltown, Shetty says that she initially took to yoga to battle cervical spondylosis. “Yoga changed my life. It cured my ailment, changed my lifestyle and turned me into a lifelong fan,” the actor says. She has gone on to write books on her fitness routine and even has a DVD called Shilpa’s Yoga. For Kareena Kapoor Khan, yoga was a miraculous exercise that helped her get into the famed “zero size” figure before her 2008 film Tashan. The film tanked at

Did you

Know?

The credit for making yoga popular among masses must be given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who, while addressing the 69th session of United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, had urged the world community to adopt the International Day of Yoga. He had suggested the date because this is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the globe.

the box office, but size zero became a trend. The actor says, “The size zero phase was a result of a combination of yoga and Rujuta’s [nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar] meal plan. I was weighing 68 kg and she brought me down to 48 kg for Tashan. I took up that project as a challenge. Adi [producer Aditya Chopra] had told me, ‘You need to be super-fit in this movie.’” Today, more than a decade later, she still practises and preaches yoga, attributing Surya Namaskars (a group of asanas) to her post-pregnancy weight loss. Celebrity yoga guru Bharat Thakur, who has trained several Bollywood stars including the late Sridevi, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, agrees. He said in an interview: “When Kareena transformed, everyone was curious about how she had achieved it. When she mentioned yoga, people were very impressed.” Model-turned-actor Lara Dutta Bhupathi, who also actively learns new forms of yoga, says: “I never miss out on yoga.” She even did prenatal yoga during her pregnancy. So what is it that is making yoga so popular among celebrities? Explains Thakur: “Celebri-

ties are interested in yoga because it is the only form of exercise that can make you look younger as you age. It keeps the body and mind healthy and reduces stress levels. It’s a complete wellness package. Yoga adds energy to your system instead of draining it out.” Almost everyone in Bollywood seems to be following some form of yoga or the other. Actor Alia Bhatt, for instance, loves yoga so much that she even tried aerial yoga (a combination of Pilates and yoga that is done while being suspended in air) while holidaying in the Maldives. Actor Bipasha Basu Singh Grover has roped in husband Karan Singh Grover to practise asanas together. Actor Akshay Kumar too prefers couple yoga with wife Twinkle Khanna. The constant uploading of yoga videos and posts by these celebrities on social media and in the most fashionable yoga wardrobe has certainly piqued interest in this traditional fitness form. They have made yoga glamorous. Aqua yoga, power yoga, aerial yoga or the plain old asanas -- it won’t be wrong to say that yoga is now the hottest trend among health-conscious millennials. ‘CAN’T THANK

AIR INDIA ENOUGH’ The ICC World Cup begins soon. How excited are you? It’s quite exciting. I hope Team India will play well and bring home the cup for all of us. I wish the team all the best. [The ICC World Cup will be held in England and Wales from May 30, 2019] What are the chances of the Indian team lifting the trophy? India is a very strong team and it has a very good chance to lift the cup. Who are the Indian players fans should look out for? Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Jasprit Bhumrah and Rohit Sharma. Which team, do you think, is India’s strongest opponent? England is the current top-ranking oneday international team that is rated as the bookmakers’ favourite to win. But I also think defending champion Australia has a good chance. Interestingly, India, that is placed second in the ICC one-day ranking, is the only team to have broken Australia’s dominance! What are the strengths of the Indian team going for the World Cup? I think batting is our [Team India] strength and we need our bowlers to do well. We have Jasprit Bhumrah and two very good wrist spinners who, I believe, have the capability to stop any team.

As the world gears up for the much-awaited ICC World Cup 2019, ace Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh shares his fondest memories of the tournament, his expectations from the Virat Kohli-led Indian squad and why Air India holds a special place in his heart 76 I SHUBH YATRA I JUNE 2019

What about the team’s batting order? There has been considerable thought about the batting order especially the number four position, for which I feel KL Rahul is the best choice. I enjoyed being there for my team, and bowling the most difficult overs in power play was very satisfying. I enjoyed watching Rishab Panth [Delhi Capitals] bat and Deepak Chahar [Chennai Super Kings] bowl. [Singh was a part of Chennai Super Kings that lost to Mumbai Indians by one run in the final] Who is your favourite cricketer currently and why? Virat Kohli, because he is simply the best batsman and more than that, his hunger to perform and get better everyday is outstanding. I just love watching him bat!

Harbhajan Singh (second from right) celebrates with his teammates (left to right - Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan) after India won the World Cup in 2011

How has Air India supported you as a player and a person? I can’t thank Air India enough for what it has done for me. I was not an international player when I was offered a job with Air India on October 26, 1999. My salary of ` 8,000, was the only security I had. The airline gave me the support I needed to invest time in bettering my game. It was the security I had, to go out and play for the country. Thank you Air India, again! every team plays with one another and the best four enter the knockout stage. But honestly, if you want to win the World Cup, no matter what format it’s going to be, you have to beat all the teams.

What are some of your fondest World Cup memories? Lifting the World Cup in 2011 was the best moment. [Singh was a part of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 2011]

How different was it to play under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni in world cups? Both Ganguly and Dhoni were fantastic captains for India. While on one hand, Ganguly believed in attacking and showed everyone how we can win abroad. Dhoni, on the other, is very calm and composed, and a man of

What is your message for youngsters who aspire to pursue sports as a career? They just need to work hard, improve themselves and not lose hope. A budding sportsperson needs support from people around. With the right amount of help from the state, India can become a great sporting nation. There’s a lot of talent in our country but sadly there is not much infrastructure that supports sports. That should be improved. The 2019 World Cup is being held in England and Wales. What are your favourite places in London? I love London and my favourite food joint there is Sadaf at Bayswater. It’s not a finedining restaurant but the food is delicious. What are your future plans? My plan is to play till the time I can, in whichever form of the game possible. I am also involved in coaching youngsters.

Due to feminisation of agriculture, participation of women in agriculture is increasing but their contribution remained invisible. Realising the immense need to address the problems and issues of the women in agriculture, India pioneered institutionalising research on women in agriculture by establishing ICARCentral Institute for Women in Agriculture’ (ICAR-CIWA).

team of scientists to understand the role and problems of women in agriculture, and has also been regularly giving inputs to researchers and policy makers for gender responsive decision making based on research results. Apart from research on gender issues and assessment of technologies with gender perspective, research on methodologies and gender disaggregated data were initiated. Its activities expanded to different parts of India through networking and collaboration with more than 40 Centres in National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES).

The vision is to emerge as a leading centre for gender research and serve as a catalyst for gender mainstreaming and women empowerment in agriculture for enhanced productivity and sustainability of agriculture. The Institute is located at Bhubaneswar in the province of Odisha and is being managed by Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General, ICAR , New Delhi through Deputy Director General , Agricultural Education, ICAR, New Delhi, Dr N S Rathore and Director of the Institute Dr S K Srivastava. Institute is implementing various research projects to address its mandate - Research on gender issues in agriculture and allied fields; Gender equitable agricultural policies/programmes and gender sensitive agricultural sector responses in pan India mode at 13 State Agricultural Universities in 12 states across the country. The institution is first of its own kind in the World that is exclusively devoted to research related to women in agriculture.
