I look forward to your wholehearted support in ensuring better maintenance and upkeep of the passenger cabin of our aircraft. This would enable us to provide better services to our cherished passengers!
In these times of turbulence in the skies, your national carrier continues to be a symbol of stability and good service. The large-scale grounding of aircraft of Jet Airways has put additional responsibilities on us, responsibilities that we are striving to meet with aplomb. The josh should always remain high, even during turbulence!

To enable us to provide you better services, it is essential that the passenger cabins of aircraft are immaculately maintained and deficiencies and damages are kept at the bare minimum. While our cabin maintenance teams are putting in their best efforts, your support will go a long way in improving things further. I humbly request you to always take care of the following: • Avoid stepping on the footrests in Business Class while getting up from your seats. The breakage of footrests, especially on international flights, is a cause of concern. • Seat pockets are designed to hold only a few magazines and newspapers. Please do not stuff sundry items into them. • Tray tables are for food trays only; please don't place heavy articles on them. • Choking of toilets due to flushing of tissue paper, infant diapers, hand towels, mouthwash bottles and other objects is fairly common. Please avoid such practices and help us to keep the toilets clean. • At the end of international flights we notice extensive littering of the cabin with food items, cans, glasses, papers, blankets, pillows etc. Please help us to keep the aircraft cabin tidy. • The handheld device for operating your in-flight entertainment system on international flights is expensive and sensitive, and cases of it getting damaged due to negligent handling are very high. Please use it gently and stow it back in place after use. • Please return infant life vests.

It’s time for the great Indian summer safari! This is the time of the year when wildlife enthusiasts head towards protected forests for wild encounters! In the May issue of Shubh Yatra, we follow the nature trail and head to Madhya Pradesh in central India. While the forests of the state are most well-known for tigers, in this issue we explore a not-so-known stretch - the ravines of Chambal and its unique wild residents. Come, explore with us, the dramatic terrain of the river valley.

This May, exploring the unknown is what fuels our travels, as we take to the highway around Sirpur, a temple town in Chhattisgarh. Internationally, we fly to Glasgow in Scotland for a dose of majestic architecture. In our popular entertainment section, know how Bollywood’s newest heart-throb Vicky Kaushal went from being an engineer to an actor! And just before I let you get back to planning your next journey, do turn the pages for a taste of India's summer king: the mango!

During the freedom struggle, Gandhiji wrote about 10 million words (around 700 words every day), which covered topics from politics to social issues like abolishing child marriage, untouchability, cleanliness and nation building.
Another feather in The cap Air India flight AI-560 ushered in a new era in fuel conservation and emission reduction flight as it landed in Hyderabad’s Shamshabad Airport from New Delhi recently. The flight operated by Air India’s Director (Operations) Capt Amitabh Singh and co pilot Capt Sunil Kumar along with Capt Digvijay Singh, Capt Rajneesh Sharma, Capt Akhil Gupta, Capt Simranjeet Singh Saimbhi and PK Gupta, scripted history by pioneering the path-breaking flight procedure of ‘despatch with no destination alternate’ on B787 Dreamliner. In a major step towards ensuring environment-friendly flight initiatives, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had recommended moving from prescriptive (when the regulator tells the airlines what to do and how to do it) regulation to performance-based regulation (when the regulator defines the outcome but leaves it to the airlines to define the path on how to get there). Despatch with no destination alternate is a fine example of collaboration between the Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA, ATC and Air India. For the first time in India, flights to Shamshabad Airport were planned without filing an alternate destination and carrying excess fuel to fly to that destination on trial. It was an honour for Air India to operate the first flight under this provision. Current regulations require every flight to plan an alternate route and carry enough fuel to fly to the destination and the alternate. This means the aircraft carries additional fuel back and forth which is redundant if there is no diversion from the intended destination to the alternate. The heavier the aircraft, the more the fuel consumption. Provisions exist in the regulations to despatch flights without an alternate, without compromising
Team Air India being led by Capt Amitabh Singh, Director (Operations)
on safety issues. For instance, for a B777 flying from New Delhi to Hyderabad, this initiative would result in a reduction in fuel consumption of about a staggering 140 kg. The savings in fuel consumption would multiply in direct proportion to the number of flights. And, with Air India having close to 15 daily flights to Shamshabad, the quantum of fuel savings would be humongous. This is a part of the fuel savings drive initiated by Capt Amitabh Singh and is one amongst the other initiatives of the Fuel Conservation Committee set up by him.

CREW CORNER 2.0 This section focusses on the exceptional staff of the national carrier. In this issue we highlight an Air India pilot, who has proudly served his country as part of the Indian Army and three army men whose spouses are a part of Air India and we are proud of each one of them tive combat during Kargil operations and also of the United Nations Mission in Congo as a Military Observer on behalf of the Indian Army. The unit he commanded was a part of the rescue operations in Uttarakhand during the flash flood of 2013. When he is not out saving lives and protecting the country, he loves to read and is a writer too.
Meghna Nanda and Col Viresh Sharma Col Viresh Sharma and Meghna Nanda have been married for the past 10 years and are parents to two beautiful kids. While one of them contributes to the nation by donning the olive green uniform and guarding the frontiers, the other half takes pride in doing her bit by flying the national carrier. In a career spanning almost over two
decades, Col Sharma has spent several years in Jammu & Kashmir, where besides combating the militants he has endured the extreme vagaries of nature. Be it braving -20 degree temperature in Drass, the earthquake in Tangdhar or the severe floods in Uttarakhand - he was there for all rescue operations. He has been a part of ac-
His wife Nanda has been with Air India for more than 14 years and is currently a deputy chief cabin crew. As an army wife, she makes it a point to stay in touch with the families of her husband’s unit and is also actively involved in their welfare. Despite her grueling routine, she carves out time for her second love - cooking. She has even guided the chefs of her husband’s unit to prepare mouthwatering dishes so that the soldiers get a taste of home-made food when they are stationed at far off and remote places.
Garima Chadha and Major Sumit Garima Chadha joined Air India in 2006 as a cabin crew member and, after 13 years of flying, is a deputy chief cabin crew on both Airbus 320 and Boeing 787. In 2011 she married Sumit, a major in the Indian Army. Having served in cities like Jhansi, Pune, Patiala and Jammu & Kashmir, Sumit is currently posted in his parent unit Hissar of the Armed Engineer Regiment. She says, “It is not easy to take care of things single handedly. In fact, we’ve barely been able to spend time with each other since our wedding. But I am proud of him and of being called an army man’s wife.”

Capt Dinesh Virk On December 1998, Captain Virk was commissioned into the third battalion of the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry after three years in the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA) and a year in the Indian Military Academy (IMA). He was also a part of the Kargil War, of which he has bittersweet memories. From witnessing the camaraderie and bravado of the men under his command to losing close friends, it was an impressionable experience at a young age. A high point in his career was when he was posted as an instructor at the IMA. “The satisfaction of shaping passionate officers for the army was unparalleled,” said Virk, who has undergone tactical, weapon, commando and jungle warfare training. His first brush with the skies was at high altitude tenure in the counter-infiltration role. He joined Air India in 2010, and has since then, flown the and Boeing737-800 is currently flying the Boeing787. He adds, “This transition from a foot soldier to a flier was smooth, given that I moved from one discipline-driven profession to another.”
Namita Sanwal and Col Brijesh Namita Sanwal joined the Maharajah on February 2005 while studying in MET College, Mumbai, and since then there has been no turning back. She hails from Valsad, a small town in south Gujarat, and feels that Air India has given her wings to touch the sky. Sanwal is married to Colonel Brijesh, an army officer who is commanding a Rastriya Rifles Battalion in Kashmir. Life as an army man’s wife is tough but she is a proud to be one. “Even though we’ve been married for six years, we have barely spent an entire year together. The most important thing for me is being a strong support for him. I am not only a mother, but also a father to our four-year-old son. There are days when I long for a one-minute-call or even a three-word-text assuring his safety. But all these sacrifices seem worthwhile when I realise how we both play our role in serving this country,” she says proudly.

Buddha Purnima
Observed as one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar, Buddha Purnima or Vesak, as it is also known, is celebrated with great fervour in India, Nepal and across Southeast Asia. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, who preached the virtues of love, kindness, humility and selflessness. Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, and subsequently in other parts of the country. His lessons eventually spread to southern Asia, where they assimilated with the local culture, as a result of which, people in different countries celebrate the day in their own way.

Kailash Manasarovar Yatra The Yatra is a lifetime experience of both pilgrimage and adventure
M
ount Kailash, a sacred Himalayan mountain at an altitude of 22,028 feet in the western Tibetan Plateau, holds great religious importance for Hindus as it is said to be the abode of Lord Shiva. For Jains, it holds a special place in their faith because this was where Rishabhadeva attained liberation from the cycle of karma. The Buddhists regard it as the sacred fortress of Buddha Shakyamuni. On the southeast of Mount Kailash, is the beautiful circular lake Manasarovar. The pilgrimage to Kailash Manasarovar is a must-visit for devotees once in a lifetime in their earthly birth. Every year, this Yatra is organised by the Ministry of External Affairs through two exclusive routes. Pilgrims via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand have the rare opportunity to visit scenic sites like the spectacular Chialekh Valley with its rare flora and fauna unique to this part of the world. Pilgrims on the motorable Nathu La route travel along the picturesque Teesta river and also have a halt at Rangpo, a well known tourist destination in Sikkim, before they cross the border for their journey through
the vast Tibetan Plateau. This Yatra organised by the Government of India, in coordination with state governments of Delhi, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, is for Indian citizens intending to visit Kailash Manasarovar for religious purposes. The Delhi Government arranges free boarding and lodging facilities for yatris during their stay in Delhi. To ensure safety and welfare of pilgrims and determine their high altitude endurance, the Government of India conducts appropriate medical checks and also appoints two Liaison Officers to accompany each batch for the entire duration.
High Altitude Diseases Due to decrease in the atmospheric pressure with increasing altitude, the atmospheric pressure at 18,000 feet is half that of the sea level. Effects such as swelling etc., due to blood pressure can increase with the reduced atmospheric pressure. Be Prepared In the monsoon, the first few days of the trek in the lower reaches on the Indian side of the Lipulekh route may often involve walking in the rain. For the latter, colder part of the trek, it is necessary to avoid getting wet.

What inspired the book? The idea for this book emerged after the completion of my previous book on cinema featuring Soumitra Chatterjee. I realised that like Chatterjee, all regional and national actors had given phenomenal performances in Satyajit Ray’s films. That was when I thought of focussing on all these great actors and discussing their moments of glory in Ray’s films.

of their best performances.
Tell us about your research. For my previous book on Chatterjee, I had interviewed Sharmila Tagore and Bengali movie star Madhabi Mukherjee apart from the Bengali film industry stalwart himself – a significant part of these interviews were on Ray. I also interacted with others who had watched Ray at work to get inputs on his working style. I matched their comments with those from the actors who had worked in close proximity with

Some unknown facts about Satyajit Ray... The first facet that leaves you spellbound is Ray’s meticulous preparation in film-making; stories about his precision are almost unreal. Also, his handling of child actors was exemplary as he could instill confidence in them by treating them with dignity, almost like adults. This is the subtle focus of my book – his respectful attitude towards actors and technicians that drew the best out of them, making his films all the more engaging for viewers.

AIR AIR INDIA INDIA ROUTE ROUTE
Air India flies to Gwalior from New Delhi, Indore and Mumbai
If there is one region that captures the imagination of every wildlife enthusiast, it is the central province and the second-largest state of India, Madhya Pradesh. Drawing visitors literally into the heart of the country’s wildest jungles that provided the perfect backdrop for Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book, this is where wildlife enthusiasts and tourists can witness the sheer diversity and wealth of our forests, where wild creatures like gaur, deer, antelope, leopard and the royal tiger roam free. With nine national parks, six tiger reserves, 25 wildlife sanctuaries and a fascinating reserve for ancient fossils dating back to several million years ago, Madhya Pradesh has a whopping 95,221 sq km of forest area and nearly 10,862 sq km of protected forests. Each zone discloses a variety of scenic landscapes and nature in all her raw untamed beauty. From the worldrenowned Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks that highlight the state’s reputation as the tiger capital of India, others like Panna, Satpura and Pench are equally popular, making up a habitat that holds nearly 20 per cent of the country’s tiger population and about 10 per cent of the tigers in the world today. Even though Madhya Pradesh’s wilderness draws thousands of visitors every year, there are several stretches that are not high on the tourist circuit. The narrow meandering belt of the National Chambal Sanctuary is one such terrain, presenting a unique wildlife experience. Carved by the eponymous river and eroded by flood and rain, the Chambal ravines run in a wide network of mud cliffs around scrub forests, on either side of the river. For centuries, Chambal’s beehad (wilderness) had been the perfect hideout for those

facts at hand
Spread over 5,400 sq km, the Chambal reserve is jointly administered by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. National Chambal Sanctuary is among the last surviving habitats of the highly endangered Gangetic river dolphin (75 as per last census) and is said to harbour over 1,255 endemic fish-eating gharials (above), 562 muggers or marsh crocodiles, several species of turtles, smooth-coated otters and nearly 330 bird species.
Every purnima (full moon night), Bateshwar’s ghats come alive in a grand maha aarti (a ritual done with lit lamps). Around Diwali a month-long cattle fair is held on the floodplains of the Yamuna. Believed to be the oldest mela in the country, the Bateshwar fair is the second-largest animal fair in India after Sonepur Mela in Bihar.

wanting to go off the grid – from Rajput soldiers escaping enemy persecution after the fall of Kannauj and Delhi, freedom fighters and the ‘rebel’ sepoys during the 1857 War of Independence and villagers absconding after any major dispute to renegades, castaways and bandits. This riverine maze at the tri-junction of three states – Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh – is also home to several species of animals and plants, endemic to this dry and hot region. The river allegedly originated from the blood of thousands of animals sacrificed by a power-hungry king. It is said, though, that this gory legend kept traders and even industries away from the river banks, making it one of the most pristine water bodies in the country! It was on the banks of the Chambal, believed to be a part of Shakuni’s kingdom, that the infamous game of dice between the Kauravas and Pandavas took place, as narrated in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. When Draupadi was humiliated after being wagered in the game of dice, she cursed the river for silently witnessing her plight. She cursed it, saying: “Henceforth, anyone who drinks from its
waters would be filled with an unquenchable thirst for vengeance.” The legend seemed to ring true as long as bands of dacoits roamed the ravines seeking retribution. It was in 1979 that the pristine riverine tract was declared a wildlife sanctuary to help revive populations of gharial (a crocodile variant native to the Indian subcontinent) and marsh crocodiles. For us, this was a trip to discover the unique region – much talked about but rarely visited! From our base, at a safari lodge near the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, we set off on a jeep ride past Bah to Nadgavan Ghat boat jetty. We watched in amazement as camel herders guided a retinue of camels loaded with firewood across the Chambal. One could go on camel safaris along the ravines, but we opted for a threehour-long boat cruise and were awarded with a once-in-a-lifetime experience! It was early morning and as our boat started cruising down the river, we spotted the first of the many turtles basking on the bank. Next came large open-jawed crocodiles as they lazily sunned themselves and baby gharials

The narrow meandering belt of the National Chambal Sanctuary presents a unique wildlife experience peeping from tiny burrows in the river bank. The distinct ghara or pot-shaped snout gives them the name gharial. The gharials are masters of camouflaging and it is tough to spot the brown-skinned reptiles merging with the muddy river banks.

Chambal is one of the best places to see large populations of birds like Indian skimmers, black-bellied tern, thickknee and pratincole. We spotted a large flock of skimmers, their curved orange beaks gleaming in the sun. As our boat approached, they took flight, putting on a synchronised airshow with their wings literally skimming the water’s edge. Our naturalist guide trained his binoculars to spot black ibis, black-necked storks, shags and greater cormorants on sandy islets. Apart from birds, we also spotted Gangetic dolphins breaking the water surface gracefully. A sudden movement in the dry scrub near the river bank shifted our focus to a lone wild fox. Camouflaged perfectly; he stared at us warily before skulking away. We were happy having spotted so many wild residents but didn’t know the best was yet to come. A few metres further down, our guide gestured us to stay silent. As the boat drifted slowly, he pointed to a patch of dry grass near the water; and blending with the yellow
and brown was a leopard. The majestic animal stared at us for a fraction of a second before disappearing into the shrubs. Our guide explained that sighting a leopard here is very rare! The leopard dominated our conversation even while we trekked across the northern bank, for about two km to the fort of Ater in Madhya Pradesh. The following morning we set out on a jeep safari around the countryside to spot blackbuck, Indian coursers and the sarus crane. Next on our itinerary was Bateshwar, a complex of temples, nine km away. From the rooftop of a private retreat by the Yamuna river, we admired the sweeping crescent of Bateshwar’s temples. Perched on a raised platform with ghats leading down to the river, the complex was once said to have 108 Shiva temples. Sadly, only 40 remain, thanks to the Yamuna’s shifting course. From the retreat, one can take boat rides and a guided tour of the temples, ending with a brief ritual performed by the priest. Our prayers, however, had been answered by Mother Nature herself!

A vibrant life-size portrait of Frida Kahlo sits on a white wall in front of me. On my left is an abstract canvas splashed with cobalt blue, raven black and canary yellow. I am waiting to meet acclaimed yoga guru Bharat Thakur at his New Delhi home. As I revise my notes, my eyes keep going back to the painting of Kahlo. Something seems different. The unibrow, the signature flowers – every detail is on point, yet the painting doesn’t resemble the Mexican artist. Then realisation strikes. It’s that of actor Bhumika Chawla, Thakur’s wife! “You seem to have identified her. You see, she is my muse,” my thoughts are interrupted by Thakur, as he walks into the room. “She is the subject of several of my works,” says the yoga teacher, who has been instrumental in popularising the traditional Indian science in the West. Everything I do is, in some way or the other, related to art,” says Thakur, who conceptualised and popularised Artistic Yoga, an evolved form of the traditional practice over two decades ago. Thakur’s association with art is not new. It started during his childhood that he spent in the Himalayas with his family’s spiritual guru learning yoga. “I lived in the Himalayas till the age of 17 and the natural beauty of my surroundings and also the harshness inspired me. slopes as my canvas and I would make colours from flowers and other natural ingredients to paint them,” he adds. But looking at his artworks – confident strokes, bold lines and a larger-than-life depiction of subjects – it is hard to believe that he never had any formal training in art. Although he was passionate about art, he became serious about it only when he was pursuing his masters and later his doctorate degree at Gwalior’s Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education.
Although Thakur has been painting for a long time, it was only last year that he held his first showcase. The canvases exhibited depicted sadhus (holy men) in various forms - with jata (dreadlocks), wearing a rudraksha mala (a seed traditionally used as a prayer bead in Hinduism) and one carrying a trishul (Lord Shiva’s trident). “These paintings are a tribute to the sadhus I was surrounded by while growing up. And in a way it is also an ode to my own experience of the layers of cosmos stretching to the realm of the uncontained,” says the artist, who works with a wide variety of media for his works. In fact, he prefers to make miniature versions of his artworks - both paintings and sculptures - before working on the final one. He has been showcasing his canvases around the world, including Dubai and London.
His inspirations
Ask him about the artists who have influenced him and he is quick to answer: “Paul Cezzane and Michelangelo. I admire Pablo Picasso’s flair and Claude Monet’s use of colours. I also like the works of Lucian Freud, Wassily Kandinsky, Francis Bacon, Vasudeo S Gaitonde, SH Raza and Raja Ravi Verma,” he explains, adding, “and then, there is always my wife to turn to for inspiration!”

S I x yar d S In his decade-long tryst with handloom, designer Sanjay Garg has been reinventing traditional Indian weaves. The creator talks to Ishita Goel about the saree’s new-age appeal
56 I Shubh Yatra I may 2019
shubh-yatra.in
From being the torch-bearer of traditional Indian clothing, the saree has today become the newest element of power-dressing for women. And it won’t be incorrect to say that designer Sanjay Garg, founder of fashion label Raw Mango, has had a substantial role to play in this revolution of sorts. Garg can be credited with having revived handwoven textiles, simplifying and modernising the weaves. Today, his sarees appeal to a cross-section of consumers – from Bollywood stars to CEOs and the woman on the street. With vivid colours and quirky motifs, and paired with bustiers, Garg’s sarees preserve the essence of tradition in a head-spinningly simple modern avatar.
Charm of the Chanderi
Garg discovered Chanderi sarees very early in his career. He took the extremely busy traditional weave of the fabric and simplified it; making it comfortable, more luxurious, yet carelessly elegant. “Chanderi’s traditional crispness and static shape worked against it among the younger generation,” says Garg, who made the silk and cotton-silk fabric easier to drape and gave it contemporary motifs and colour combinations. “While working with Chanderi weavers as part of a college project I realised there was a gap between what was being produced and what the urban customer wanted. The weavers wanted more business and they agreed to work with me. I couldn’t have taught them the art; no one knows it better than them. I just bridged the gap between the client and the weaver. I tweaked the traditional designs, introduced new colours and motifs, and added zari,” explains the designer, who often says that no one can re-invent the saree. “The saree is the most evolved piece of fashion from our country. It suits women of all ages and shapes. For me, designing sarees was a natural choice, having seen women around me wear them,” adds Garg, who was brought up in Mubarikpur, a village near Alwar in Rajasthan.

If not the saree, Raw Mango campaigns have revolutionised the image of the saree-wearing Indian woman. What Garg did was alter the communication about the saree. sarees, mostly bridal, Garg started using real-life women in his brand’s campaign. “I decided to move away from models and photograph women who are comfortable in my creations,” he says. One fit for all
In his drive to go back to the root of the saree, Garg also started designing blouses to pair them with. “I researched that traditionally, sarees were not worn with blouses as we know the garment today. So, I started reimagining them,” he says.
58 I Shubh Yatra I may 2019
Raw Mango’s anti-fit blouses are boxy, which many consider to be a relief from their fitted counterparts. “I offer you a blouse that is versatile and can be worn with anything, from pants and leggings to salwars and also the saree. I have made the blouse and the saree more sustainable,” he explains. Besides Chanderi, the designer has given modern interpretations to several traditional weaves like mashru, Benarasi and chikankari. His works have been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2017) and at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2015), London. However, the designer doesn’t seem to derive much pleasure from it as according to him, his real success would be to make the masses appreciate unique Indian textiles such as jamdani of West Bengal, and heritage weaves from Lucknow, Kanpur, Nagpur and other Indian cities. After a successful decade, Garg is now planning to shift base to the southern parts of the country, and preferably work with Kanjeevaram next. Or, as he adds with a straight face, “I always thought I’d be a revolutionary and maybe that is why I chose to work with the saree. If I get more freedom, I may step out and fight for social justice and human rights!”

to the past It’s the journey that matters more than the destination. The thought plays on my mind as our SUV zips through the smooth highways of Chhattisgarh. We are not even 50 km from the state capital Raipur but we are already driving into the wilderness, having left the high-rises of smartly-planned Naya Raipur far behind. As the morning sun peeps through the clouds hanging low, the road glistens, washed clean by a night of rain. On both sides of the road lay acres of lush farmland, bordered by a hint of dense forests at the horizon. Small villages, bridges spanning several rivers, including the mighty Mahanadi, temples on distant hillocks and clusters of townships under construction flash past, even before we can register their names. The road seems to have a mind of its own, sometimes running in a strict straight line and at others, dancing into an S, rising and dipping and disappearing into the azure sky! Soon, we reach Arang, a quaint village famous for its temples. Once the seat of the powerful Haihaya dynasty, Arang was a flourishing centre for Hindu and Jain preachers in its glorious days. The king did so without regret and the Lord blessed him. The village, with several temples, stands shaded by old trees with gnarled branches. Among the structures, the most famous is Bhand Dewal, a Jain temple from the 11th century. Standing on a plinth, this five-storey shrine is a story of contrast against the blue sky. We weave our way between a line of cars to approach the ruins of the many temples Sirpur is known for. Today, it’s a bustling tourist spot, but just a few decades ago, before the discovery of its buried heritage, it was a sleepy nondescript town. Recent excavations have led to the discovery of this ancient civilisation, with traces of Hindu temples and a Buddha vihara, which is said to be four times the size of the famed Nalanda university in Bihar. In total, Sirpur is home to 22 Shiva temples, four Vishnu temples, 10 Buddha viharas, and three Jain temples - asserting its position as a centre of multiple religions! As we walk, first comes the Lakshman (Laxman) temple. Cited as one of the most significant examples of sculpted brick

shikhara temples from the 7th century, it stands tall on a high plinth, the rust of the bricks highlighted by the fresh green of the surrounding lawns. Above the main entrance of the temple is an intricate carving of Lord Vishnu sitting on Sheshnag, the multi-headed snake. Various incarnations of Lord Vishnu have been intricately carved on the outer walls of the temple, adding to its beauty. Apart from the Lakshman temple, the Gandheshwar temple with Lord Shiva as its presiding deity, and the Tantrik temple here are also popular. The Gandheshwar temple stands magnificently on the banks of the Mahanadi river. The temple offers a magnificent view of the river snaking along it. The unique Tantrik temple, also known as Surang Tila, is made of white stones placed above each other in a steplike formation. Above this structure are five smaller temples. Sirpur is also home to the Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihara, which is said to have been constructed in the 7th or 8th century for Buddhist monks. But it’s the massive Teevardev Buddha Vihara, which leaves a lasting impression. With several buildings in their original condition, the complex is adorned with intricate carvings and con-
tains several monasteries and statues of Lord Buddha. After a quick lunch at a local eatery, we head back to our car and drive out of Sirpur. As the spire of the Lakshman temple recedes in the distance, the vagaries of Sirpur’s history play on my mind. The road now weaves into a mountainous tract, with hills lining it on both sides. On one peak stands a gigantic statue of Lord Hanumana, which seems to be keeping an eye on passers-by! More mountains and rivers join us along the way, as we reach Singhora, a small village known for the much-revered Rudreshwari temple, which is situated on a hilltop. As our car climbs up the hill, the plains fall away below us. From the temple at the top, the highway looks like a gymnast’s ribbon, rippling through farms, forests, rivers and mountains to touch the distant horizon, that’s turning a shade of red to catch the dipping ball of fire! There are no landmarks in sight and we may have reached nowhere, but the journey couldn’t have been more memorable!

The foremost thing that a first-time traveller comes across while visiting Glasgow in Scotland, is the local accent; and I was no exception. I had blamed my ignorance of international languages for my handicap, but later, I realised that even travellers from other regions of the United Kingdom, of which Scotland is a part, find it difficult to comprehend the quaint Glasgow patter or Glaswegian, as the accent is popularly known. A form of Scottish English with influences from Cockney (London), Glaswegian made me fumble in conversations for a long time after my arrival in the city for my college education! But that becomes an ignorable part of the experience of Glasgow, a city so beautiful that more often than not, visitors just want to stay back forever! Glasgow is often translated as “a dear green place”, somewhat of a puzzle as

the city has been a bustling seaport, synonymous with industrial power. As you discover Glasgow, the meaning of its name dawns upon you, because it throws your way a remarkably charming mix of business and nature, and a lifestyle of fun mixed with a rich cultural heritage. Glasgow is green, no doubt, particularly its western side (popularly called West End), with the Kelvingrove Park and the large Botanical Garden. Nature comes to life here, especially during the change of seasons – from being bare and stark in winter, the trees turn lush green in spring and yellow and brown in autumn. And nestled amidst this foliage is the recently refurbished Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and my alma mater, the massive and picturesque, hilltop castlelike University of Glasgow, the tower of which dominates the city’s skyline. through the Kelvingrove Park is one of the most peaceful experiences in Glasgow. If you arrive in the warm months, you will be greeted by families soaking up the sun and the myriad hues of the trees, and in winter, the landscape is sombre and draped in white.

The city’s prosperity as a flourishing manufacturing and trade centre is reflected in the impressive line-up of stately Victorian mansions and public buildings. However, eclipsing these are the sublime designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the most influential Scottish artists of the 20th century. From fridge magnets and shopfronts flaunting the legendary Mackintosh lettering to iconic buildings like the Glasgow School of Art, the Scotland Street School Museum and the stunning Lighthouse (which was central to Glasgow becoming the UK City of Architecture and Design in 1999) - the city has been shaped by the unique “Glasgow Style” of Mackintosh. Glasgow proudly wears its tag of being a working-class city, innovatively displaying its industrial heritage in several iconic structures,
including the magnificent Riverside Museum and many more along the Clyde river. A tour of the city is, however, incomplete without shopping and experiencing its vibrant nightlife. The main shopping hub is Buchanan Street, where high-end brands rub shoulders with cosy cafés offering the delectable fish and chips, corner coffee shops, gift shops selling Scottish knick-knacks and street singers playing bagpipes or violins. For a drink, head to Ashton Lane, where almost every door leads to a pub or a restaurant. Buzzing throughout the year, this is where you can soak in the true spirit of this vibrant city. Weaving through handwritten menu boards displayed on the cobbled street, beerguzzlers having fun and several musical scores mingling with each other, this is where I made friends for life and discovered the warm and welcoming soul of Glasgow!

Vicky Kaushal took a chance when he gave up an engineering career to follow his passion. There were doubts then, but today, just four years after his Bollywood debut Masaan (2015), he can’t thank his family enough for letting him pursue his dream of acting. And he is nowhere close to stopping. After a fantastic 2018 with five releases – Raazi, Lust Stories, Love Per Square Foot, Sanju and Manmarziyaan, Kaushal delivered the much-acclaimed Uri: The Surgical Strike in January 2019. How did your journey begin? I had very humble beginnings; in a chawl in Malad, Mumbai. We lived in a small house with no bathroom or kitchen. My father [Shyam Kaushal] was an action director in Bollywood and from the very early years, my brother [Sunny Kaushal] and I were made aware of life’s challenges. Our parents told us clearly that necessities would be provided for, but luxuries had to be earned! Can we say that you followed your father into Bollywood? It was never that easy! While my father’s journey inspired me, we were always far away from Bollywood; neither were we ever taken to a film set, nor did we aspire to meet an actor. Films were never discussed at home. I was a good student and enjoyed Mathematics so I decided

to pursue engineering. I never had any fancy plans about life but believed I had to give a 100 per cent every day. From an engineer to an actor... how did the shift happen? While studying to become an engineer, I realised that it was not what I wanted to do my whole life. I started questioning myself on what I really wanted to do. I had been active on stage since childhood and through school and college. I realised I enjoyed acting and I felt liberated while doing so, on any platform and for any duration. I was an introvert and acting gave me the chance to express myself. I joined an acting school to see if it was my true calling and knew in six months that it really was. If not an actor, what would you have been? I would be on a film set no matter what, even if I were a spot boy! While my father was working with Hrithik Roshan for Fiza (2000), I visited the film’s set and I noticed that there was this frantic person who was running all over the place doing all the work. That was the film’s assistant director. The challenging job excited me and I decided to become one. I got my first opportunity as an assistant director with director Anurag Kashyap in his movie Gangs of Wasseypur. Between 2011 and 2014, I experimented with theatre, acting in plays with experienced artistes such as
Naseeruddin Shah and Manav Kaul. That is how my acting skills were honed. Theatre became my training ground, my riaaz [practice sessions]! Your choice of films has been varied. Who guided you? While my emotional strength comes from my mother, my strength to take decisions comes from my father. He has always advised me to read a script and then do what my heart says. When the movie Uri was offered to me, initially I wasn’t convinced. I was filming Raazi at that time and was mentally occupied. I handed over the script of Uri... to my father to read. He read it and told me, ‘if you miss this movie, you would be the stupidest person on the planet. You would miss gold!’ In hindsight, I thank my stars that this movie was offered to me first and that I accepted it! What was your experience during the filming of the movie? Sitting with the director [Aditya Dhar] and understanding his vision and meeting Army personnel helped me prepare for my role. I weighed 77 kg in Raazi and had to gain about 15 kg for Uri.. because Aditya wanted me to bulk up and look like a commanding officer worthy of standing in front of 80 soldiers and guiding them. I had to create the image of power without uttering a word. Those four months of my life were like being at a boot camp; from

martial arts to Special Force commando training for 10 hours a day, my schedule was insane. The 7th battalion of the Sikh regiment of the Indian Army trained me in obstacle course and by the end of it, I had bruises all over my body! Only when I had toughened up enough did we begin shooting. The day I wore the uniform, the sense of responsibility I felt was incredible and that moment meant a lot to “Between 2011 and me. failure for granted. My journey keeps me grounded and I’m happy with the way it has carved out. I’m a big believer in destiny and karma. As much as I’m an actor, I’m also the audience. I’m an actor to four films a year but I’m an audience to 400 films a year and I only want to learn and improve with every experience and every film. Is it tough to handle the fame? My job as an actor is between action and cut. I have a job just like anybody else. Just as you are a pilot when in the cockpit, for me the film set is the cockpit. But before and after that, I’m a regular guy. I want to take my work very seriously but not my stardom. My parents have always said, ‘We can live with the fact that you are not a good actor but we can’t live with the fact that you are not a good person.’ I want people to feel good about meeting me because nothing is permanent. You are no greater or lower than the person you meet.

SPOTLIGHT WHAT IS MY REMEDY?
My remedy is a tool I’ve devised through intensive research over years to balance your energies in your birth graph. By precisely studying the effect of each energy, and its powers we can enhance the missing energies to help you get successful results. It's not an overnight change, nothing is a miracle, but I will guide you to work on your missing energies. The universe is balanced, wherein to gain something, one must lose something too. In this case we will help you lose your negativities, and help you stay positive, strong and successful.
The only successful Numerologist to have created self-htelp remedies for your fortune and prosperity, growth and sustainable success
SPOTLIGHT INVEST IN UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF In todays materialistic age, we try to grow and achieve everything out of our reach, and after failing blame the universe for not allowing us a fair chance. We must try and understand ourselves first, and numerology helps you to learn about the most hidden aspect of your life. ‘I don't say numerology will make you the richest man, because being rich isn’t the biggest achievement, but if you take my help, I shall help you be a better person.’ Take time out to study yourself, and numerology can be a tool to help you in this. Book your consultation for yourself, or your family, children’s education, marriage or your career & business ventures

Numerology analyses your past, present and future. Every individual is unique and has their own balance of positive and negative energies, which Sandhiya Mehhta helps them study, by a detailed consultation. “To a person who seeks success, my system will bring success, happiness and prosperity. And to those who are already successful it will bring sustainability, positive reinforcements, further success and introduce to a new and higher perspective and lifestyle.” The Journey to my methods I am someone who has evolved with every step of my life and have just tried to be better at what I love. I don't just predict your future, I communicate, consult and help you empower your energies. My exclusive research and study of missing numbers in your birth graph helps me to determine your strong energies, and to uplift the missing energies to suit to your dreams and ambitions. With my unique scientific methods, I strengthen these missing energies in your graph. Its like providing nutrition to a body, by way of simple remedies and self improvement tools that I have developed by myself. Rahu and Shani : The curious case of 4 & 8 With nearly 70% people somehow connected to 4 or 8, one wonders why is there so much hardship in the world. There will be disappointments, delays, hardships, slow growth, but these numbers are powerful friends if you wish to have them in your team. If channelised, their energies can be used effectively to push you in the right direction, and at least not to make you worry about their mythical nature of negativity. I will, understand your difficulties and suggest you measures, we will empower your life and, learn through 4 & 8 and reap more fruits of your hard work than you would have previously did.
1, 9, 5, 3 : The positive side Individually every number has its massive merits but if it doesn’t get the support of your fadic/destiny number it can’t do much for you. 1, 9, 5 & 3 are very powerful numbers and should get magnanimous success as per individual calculations, but if you are still struggling and have faced certain problems you should try and understand your state of energies and detangle the web, to create a free path for your future. “A bright star has its own energy, but lighting a lamp in the dark is much more meaningful.” We all are a mix of many numbers, their combinations play us differently and affects us differently. We have to empower these combinations in our fortune, to achieve what is extraordinary, which makes us exemplary individuals, helping not just themselves but also their families, society, someone in need who looks upto you. My Numerology for the success road ahead “Knowledge empowers you, and there is nothing more powerful than to understand yourself, your potentials, what holds you back, what drives you forward.” I provide you this knowledge about yourself, though numerology. Knowledge about finances, career, turnaround years, lucky dates, months, years, things that help you have a strong backup plan for everything in life. “No mantra, fasting, name changes singularly guarantees you anything. Ultimately its you who has to foresee the future, and I help you to do so.” If you believe in yourself and the universe, let me just show you a direction, you yourself will lead on the right path and achieve the results within no time. I have received tremendous positive feedbacks to have faith in the universe myself. “I am not god; I just understand my field of work and use it to help people, guide them and provide them with some efficient ways to be happy, peaceful, ever-glorious and a good part of our society. I continue to achieve results with all my clients."-Sandhiya Mehhta.
