Bandipur National Park, Karnataka Once a private hunting reserve for the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore, Bandipur National Park is a popular getaway from Bengaluru. Established in 1974 as a tiger reserve, Bandipur is known for its rich flora and fauna. The park lies in the centre of an enormous forest, situated at the junction where the Western Ghats meet the Nilgiri Hills. Spread across an area of 874.2 sq km, the park is part of a biosphere reserve along with Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, Nagarhole National Park and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu. This is
known as the ‘Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve’. If lucky, one may even spot other big cats such as leopards or panthers. The Nugu river runs through the park, while the Kabini river makes its way along the north of the park and along the south lies the Moyar river. Bandipur is also popular for its tiger population. Apart from the striped beasts, be prepared to witness ambling herds of Asiatic elephant, multitudes of gaurs, chital, four-horned antelopes, wild boars and sambhar, while even spotting the dark-toned malabar squirrel, porcupines, the lazy sloth bears and even the
elusive jackals. Those who indulge in birding will enjoy scanning the dry and moist deciduous forest landscape, as there are over 200 species of birds reported here. Note the backwaters in the region that attract a number of wildlife in general, and even during drier days, the pools of water pull in a number of birds. Birders can keep an eye out for Malabar Trogon, Brown Hawk Owl, Nilgiri Flycatcher, King Vulture, Greyheaded Fishing Eagle, Pompadour Green Pigeon and more.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Safari timings: Morning – 6 am to 8 am; evening – 3 pm to 5 pm. The timings are flexible and may change depending on weather, etc.
TIPS It is better to spend a night in one of the many lodges in the region, so one can comfortably opt for an early morning safari.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary, Goa Although the sanctuaries and national parks of Goa may not be as popular as its beaches or nightlife, when travelling to this western state, ensure a visit to this sanctuary. The Western Ghats are a lush geographic region in the subcontinent, rich with a variety of flora and fauna. Spread across 240 sq km, the region is a protected area in Sanguem taluk in Goa. Located near the town of Mollem and at a distance of 53 km from Panaji, this region is home to the famed and beatific Dudhsagar Falls. Earlier known as Mollem Game Sanctuary, the region was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and given the name, Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and within it lies Mollem National Park. Situated on the eastern border of Goa, the region is home to a number of endangered and rare wildlife species. The topography of the land supports a deciduous forest and a tropical and semi evergreen forest with over 720 species of flowering plants in the region. Many species of birds take shelter here, such as Emerald Dove, Common Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Woodpecker, Wagtails, Whiterumped Spinetail, Crested Serpent Eagle and Great Pied Hornbill, among others. Founded in 1970, Bannerghatta National Park is in the southeastern part of the state. In 1974, it was declared as a national park with a portion being earmarked as a biological reserve in 2002. Situated almost 22 km south of Bengaluru, it is one of the better preserved wilderness spots close to an urban area. Sprawled across an area of 104 sq km of dense deciduous forests and scrub lands, the park is lined with villages along the border. The park is flanked by Talli Reserve Forest and Bilikal Forest in the southern region, and the Suvarnamukhi stream
cuts through the region. The forest area is maintained by the forest department. The Bannerghatta Biological Reserve has a fenced forested elephant sanctuary where the ambling giants can roam freely and there is a wildlife corridor for elephants that connects Sathyamangalam forest and BR Hills. Apart from elephants, the other fauna at the park are the Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, leopard, slender loris, bonnet macaque, the Arboreal slender loris, porcupines and scaly pangolins, Indian gazelle, wild boar, along with reptiles such

There is even a museum and mediacentre here that prove to be quite educational for everyone. The zoo here has over 1,200 animals that are both endemic, i.e., from this region and exotic. andikota is a small village in the Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh that is known for its spectacular gorge formed by River Pennar that cuts through the Erramala hills. The area is marked by deep valleys and massive boulders of granite. According to experts, the canyon is more than a thousand years old. This untouched and unexploited natural beauty blends seamlessly with the area’s rich historical past. Gandikota was founded in 1123 by Kapa Raja of nearby Bommanapalle village. Apart from the gorge, there are several other attractions in and near Gandikota village that attract visitors, the most special being the ancient, magnificent Gandikota fort that sits majestically on top of the gorge. The gorge formation is such that the Pennar River flows about 90m below on the western and northern sides and is said to have offered strong natural defense to the Kakatiya, Vijayanagar and Qutb Shahi kings who ruled from the fort. The view of gorge from the top is majestic. And when the sun goes down, the gorge becomes all the more spectacular with a beautiful colour palette covering its cluster of rocks.
The magnificent fort The 13th century Gandikota Fort is a red sandstone structure with intricate carvings, protected by a five-mile-long (eight kilometres) rocky wall. The fort acquired its name due to the ‘gorge’ (in Telugu it is called ‘gandi’), formed between the Erramala range of hills, also known as Gandikota hills and the river Pennar that flows at its foot, reducing its width to a mere 300ft. The massive fort is surrounded by natural deep valleys, impassable hills and boulders that make it a very secured fort. Situated amidst beautiful landscape and wild forests, it is endowed with vast natural resources. The fort was considered as one of the most prominent forts in the country as the powerful Telugu dynasty, the Pemmasani Kamma Dynasty, also known as Gandikota Kammas, ruled this fort for nearly 300 years. The other structures in the fort include a large granary (for emergency storage of food), a graceful ‘pigeon tower’ with fretted windows and an extensive palace built by bricks with some plastered decorations and some wells. There is an old cannon lying in the fort. There are gardens and springs and an undated inscription on a boulder, near the ‘Nagajhari’ outside the fort, recording the gift

All these properties have made this teak ideal for varied purposes from handicrafts to homes and ships giving it a nomenclature of ‘Carpenter’s Joy’. Portraits of men who worked at establishing teak plantations acknowledge their contribution, while the entire presentation conveys the efforts of teak research undertaken by Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI). teak heritage as logs/planks were conveyed in large rafts plying these waters. At the far end of the bridge one walks down a spiralling staircase and to the famous plot. A paved path leads through the 5.675 acres plot that has a cluster of 117 old trees with vegetation on the ground, giving it a wonderful natural atmosphere. The idea of a teak plantation was initiated by HV Conolly, the Collector of Malabar (in response to the destruction of local teak forests) and the plantation was raised by Sub-Conservator Sri Chathu Menon. The plot was declared as a permanent preservation plot in 1943, and is of interest to researchers and students as well as lay visitors. The plot is said to have some of the trees planted in the mid-19th century. A tree, number 23, with height of almost 50m high and a girth of 4.2m, is the main attraction of the plot. Visitors bend backwards to take in its soaring height, try embracing its ample girth, then – awed by the experience - take a picture standing near it. After a leisurely walk through the plot, it is time to return by the suspension bridge to the entrance and pause at the store for some natural produce for a delicious memory of a visit to a unique pocket of green in God’s Own Country!

reathtaking royal heritage, magnificent forts, and palaces are sheer architectural landmarks of the State of Karnataka. The majestic shrines and beatific caves residing in the cities of Karnataka, are a perfect way to explore the exceptional culture, diverse ethnicity and the rich legacy of South India. Steeped in royal heritage, the city situated at the base of the Chamundi hills is home to rich history of the Wodeyars. The great patrons of art, the Wodeyars, had a succession of 25 kings who ruled Mysuru until 1947 and the period of their rule was an era of prose literature. The city has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival. According to many historical records, the Dasara festivities in Mysuru began with the Vijayanagar kings in the 15th century.
The Palace Mysuru has a number of historic palaces, however, the Mysore Palace is the largest and the most opulent of all palaces located in the city centre. The interior of Mysore Palace is richly carved, intricate, colourful and architecturally thrilling. Designed by the English architect, Henry Irwin, the Mysore Palace, also known as the Amba Vilas Palace is the official residence of the Wodeyar dynasty. The threestorey stone structure in fine grey granite with deep pink marble domes incorporates elements from Indian, Indo-
Islamic, Neo-Classical and Gothic revival styles. The palace was built between 1897-1912 and has beautifully designed square towers at cardinal points. The central arch of the facade has the sculpture of Gajalakshmi – the goddess of wealth with elephants. While the Diwan-eKhas has rosewood doorways, the Durbar Hall has beautiful sculptures on the pillars and ornate ceiling. The octagonal-shaped Kalyana Mantapa boasts of multi-hued stained glass ceiling with peacock motifs. The portrait gallery at the southern end of Kalyana Mantapa has two portraits of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. and gold and an oil painting of Yuvaraja Narasimharaja are also the treasured jewels of the palace. The golden howdah (or elephant seat) and the jewel encrusted golden throne are part of the items on display. The seven cannons situated in front of the Gombe Thotti (Doll’s Pavilion) are used to mark the beginning and end of the annual Dasara procession. The palace is illuminated on Sundays and public holidays for some time in the evening and with 1,00,000 bulbs during Dasara celebrations. The famous sweet, Mysore pak, was first prepared in the kitchens of the Mysore Palace during the regime of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, by a palace cook named Kakasura Madappa. Raja Wodeyar I who initially celebrated it in the year 1610 at Srirangapatna. Earlier, the festivities began with the royal Wodeyar couple performing puja to Goddess Chamundeshwari in the temple located on top of the Chamundi Hill at Mysuru. The tradition of having a special durbar in the

Mysore Palace was started during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1805. This durbar was attended by members of the royal family, some important guests, officials and the general public. The tradition continues till date but the only difference is that today the royal family holds a private durbar unlike the traditional durbar which was open to masses.
The Special Event The dasara celebration in Mysuru is a royal festival celebrating victory of Truth over Evil. It is said that Goddess Chamundeshwari or Durga slew the demon Mahishasura on the day of Vijaya Dashami. Dasara is observed as the State festival – Nadahabba in Karnataka and the celebrations are steered by the Royal Family of Mysuru. They perform special puja on the occasion of Dasara and the entire city is beautifully decorated and illuminated. Various cultural programmes are also performed during the festival. If you visit Mysuru during Dasara, do not miss watching famous artists at the palace. Cultural events like sports, wrestling, poet’s meet, food festival and film festival can also be witnessed during the festivities. Besides the events, what attracts the tourists to Mysuru during Dasara is the illuminated

Dasara exhibits are one of the main attractions of the festival. The exhibition continues for around two months and is held at Doddakere Maidan opposite the Mysore Palace. It is known for stalls selling clothing, glass ware, food stalls and other stalls highlighting the various departments of Government of Karnataka. People can also participate in games and amusement rides at the play area in the exhibition ground. The Dasara Festival is concluded with colourful procession, popularly known as Jamboo Savari. The grandeur and magnificence is something which everyone should experience during their visit to Mysuru. The idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari
is carried in a golden howdah weighing over 750 kg on top of an elephant. Earlier, the king used to lead the procession seated upon the golden howdah instead of the idol. Another major attraction of the festival is the colourful tableaux created by different State organisations. The tableaux participate in the procession. Also participating in the procession are musical bands belonging to State Police that lend music to the procession, folk dancers,
decorated elephants, horses and camels. The procession adjourns at Bannimantap where people worship Banni Tree. The celebrations of the 10 th day culminate with the Panjina Kavayatthu (torchlight parade) held on a grand note at the Bannimantap grounds on the outskirts of the city. One can experience exotic fire works and stunts on motorcycles by a team of the Indian Army. What adds to the excitement is the recently added laser show.

Treasure trove of culinary secrets Just like the rest of India, the southern states of our country boast of a rich culinary heritage that is steeped in history, culture and religion. Whether it is the legendary Mysore Pak of Karnataka or the royal Jauzi ka Halwa of Hyderabad or the traditional Kerala Puttu or the innovative Murukku Sandwich of Chennai, the fare is extensive and eclectic. The best part about food walks is that they help unearth the unique and the authentic with stories of

history and culture ‘peppered’ in. “Local cuisine all over the world is not just about food but is a deep dive into the culture of the land. That’s the beauty of a street food tour,” says Vinay of Gully Tours, an organisation that conducts a host of experiential walks including food walks in Mysuru, Bengaluru and Coorg. Visiting a 100-year-old local market in Mysuru, sampling Mysore Pak from the great grandson of the person who invented this dessert, exploring some of the finest coffees in Coorg are just few of the unique experiences you can expect with Gully Tours. So, while food is the focal point of any food walk, there is a lot more than just food that you can take away. One can learn about stories behind dishes, what incident drove them to be invented and how they became popular. “The actual pulse of any city can be experienced only
when you walk its bylanes and explore the local culture and food in places that have been around for decades,” says Ravi Khubchandani, General Manager, Novotel Hyderabad Airport.
Beyond the obvious It goes without saying that there is much more to Hyderabadi cuisine than ‘biryani’ and Chennai has much more to offer beyond ‘idlis and dosas’. “Hyderabad with its rich history has seen various cuisines thrive beyond its own. Arabic, Yemeni alongside local Telangana and Andhra have all found their footing here. So, during our walks we discover the delectable world of Hyderabadi broths and gravies like the ‘Marag’ and ‘Paya’ that are best paired with the traditional bread called ‘Char Koni Naan,” says Ashis Nayak who started FoodDrifter in Hyderabad along with Neidhi

It is only then that
you discover the speciality of a place, whether it is cost, taste or the nostalgia,” says Sridhar Venkataraman who helps curate food walks in Chennai. Sridhar facilitates walks that cover a variety of areas, each of them having some unique aspects based on demographics. Indian snacks and quick eats. Mint Street in the bustling Sowcarpet area of Chennai is where you can gorge on some delicious North Indian snacks like hot jalebis, pav bhaji and aloo tikki chaat.
Food quality, good service, safety and hygiene are some of the key factors that food walk organisers are mindful of when showcasing outlets. Also, there needs to be a certain significance in terms of tradition, history or culture attached to the establishment and the food. “We work a lot on our presentations to make them engaging and entertaining. All our trails are researched and the content is vetted by our panel of historians. We then write our own stories. Our walks are more like delightful conversations between the storyteller and the guests,” says Lakshmi Shankar, Business head, Tours: Storytrails India (P) Ltd who curate walks in Chennai, Madurai and Puducherry. “The places should have some heritage and historical value” says Mansoor Ali, founder of Bengaluru by Foot, an organisation that conducts walks in several areas of Bengaluru. Interactive and enjoyable experience Food walks today are also informative and engaging like the one offered in Kochi. “Kochi is the commercial capital of Kerala and hence one can enjoy food from all the 14 districts in Kerala here. In addition, Kochi was a wellknown trade centre even much before European countries started colonising it. This has influenced Kerala’s cuisine heavily and our food walks showcase this aspect,” says Karthik Murali, founder of Eat Kochi Eat who run two main food walks on request, The Fort Kochi Chronicles and the Kerala Express.

Lips
Face Preparing the skin well is an important step to begin the make up. Before you apply the foundation, use a moisturiser that is best suitable for your skin type. Massage it on your skin followed by an eye cream. Get the extra glow by mixing a drop of oil in your moisturiser. Oils such as almond or jojoba give your skin a dewy glow. A more yellow-based concealer is an amazing cure for mild redness around your eyes. Complete the base with a dash of powder with a fluffy brush. Buff your T-zone nicely and do not over powder your face.
With holiday parties and darker clothes, treat yourself to a deep red, wine, plum or berry-coloured lip. The gradient trend is here to stay. This festive season you can rock two, three or even four lip shades at one time. First apply your main lip colour, line your lips, and blend the liner inwards towards the centre of your pout. Next apply a little of the shimmer powder in the areas untouched by the liner. Use a lip liner to outline and shape your lips, then fill it in with the colour closest to the lip liner. The season is also the time to mess with metallics like silver, white shimmer and gold. Pearly shades of copper, bronze and titanium are also here to stay.
Glam Up
Gear up to look your best this festive season. Sparkle that dazzle and walk like a diva. Eyes The season is not about basic top and bottom eyeliner. As you head to the parties, blend the black all around the eyelid to create a smudged and sultry effect. Stock your vanity boxes with pastel hues, from lavender to chartreuse, and bright blues like teal, aqua, and cobalt. Keeping in mind the party season, the shimmering blue eye shadow is the upcoming trend. Add a dash of diamond powder or glitter to the centre of the eyelid. Use a waterproof eyeliner and complete your look with lots and lots of mascara. Don’t forget to curl your lashes before and after the mascara for that mesmerising fluttering effect.

East meets West If regular salwar kurta or simple saree styles are not something you want to wear this festive season, you can add an oomph factor with some fusion hacks. Add cigarette pants and embroidered kurta cum jacket to your wardrobe. Palazzos can never let you down when it comes to fashion. Rustic Richness Why wear sarees the same old way when you have plenty of options to experiment with the traditional style? Innovative styles of draping with quirky elements are wonderful ways to add elegance to your outfit this season. Twist up the traditional sarees by adding a belt that will not only keep the pleats in place but will also add to the neat look. Shorter saree drapes in single colour can be paired with contrast leggings or straight pants. If leggings are not your choice, you can crosswrap the saree and tie the pallu in a prominent knot. A quirky jacket with different types of collars, textured materials, metallic motifs and embellishments can dazzle up the ensembles. If you are heading to a party or social gathering, carry a stone encrusted or designer clutch and add shimmering gold and silver ornamentation to complete the look.
Bold & Beautiful Traditional handlooms with captivating patterns and prints is an extensive amalgamation. If
you want something off-beat for garba night or Ganesh Chaturthi evening, you can wear a dhoti styled kurta. Take the festive fashion one step further with a bold slit kurta in geometric pattern. They work well with everything from trousers, jeans, palazzos, leggings and churidars. In this era of fusion, you can add your loose Aladdin pants from the good old cartoon days to your outfit. Pair it with a poncho top with embroidered bottom hemline for a comfy yet stylish look.

India’s fabric of choice Khadi, termed as ‘fabric of nation’, is a symbol of India’s economic self-sufficiency and a medium for communicating to the British, the dignity and equality of Indian civilisation. The ‘Khadi’ spirit signifies fraternity and brotherhood with every human being. Words: MIA GANDHI
K
hadi is not just a fabric, it was a movement through which Mahatma Gandhi demonstrated the ability to be self-reliant, to believe in oneself and to recognise one’s inner potential. Once a symbol of India’s freedom struggle, khadi has now morphed into a fabric of choice, where high street designers are giving it an avant-garde makeover.
Freedom fabric The evolution of Khadi was based on the fact that a country rich in unmatchable skills and crafts, has the capability to create high quality products and build her economic independence. Khadi refers to handspun and handwoven cloth usually made of cotton, spun using a ‘charkha’ or spinning wheel. The
khadi movement started in 1918, and was a call to boycott foreign made goods and promote the rich culture and livelihood of Indian craftsmen.
A rebirth It was in the 1980s when Khadi found its way into Indian fashion, as Designer Devika Bhojwani introduced Khadi with ‘Swadeshi’ brand. In partnership with Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC), the label was showcased at a fashion show where Bhojwani displayed around 85 garments, that were later available at the many KVIC stores across India. This brought the humble Khadi well within reach of millions, promoting it as not just a mundane fabric to beat the heat but as one that broke stereotypes, thereby elevating it to a whole new level.

Designer Ritu Kumar took the khadi movement even further with her collection ‘Tree Of Life’. This was khadi’s first commercial entry into the fashion orbit. After this, there was no looking back. Designers started a movement to remind India of its lost heritage. They utilised this fabric in the most creative manner that benefitted artisans and weavers economically, and at a larger scale. Their goal of setting up brands was with a purpose to see the fabric get its much deserved respect. Renowned designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, in collaboration with Jack & Jones, came up with stylish and eco-friendly
khadi denims. He merged India’s cultural past with the trendy present to create denims that were indigenous and handcrafted.
Fashion forward Designer label Red Sister Blue’s connection with khadi is more emotional. Nanda Yadav, co-founder of Red Sister Blue, says enthusiastically, “We have a number of women artisans, who are always enthusiastic about making something new with khadi. Whenever we visit them, they are always ready with their own designs. You can feel their energy and positivity when it comes to working with this fabric.”
KHADI EMPOWERS THE RURAL ECONOMY WHICH IS THE BACKBONE OF OUR COUNTRY
As the industry around khadi evolved into one traditional in approach and perception, it became difficult to readily attract the attention of the next-gen. Red Sister Blue is on a mission to make khadi an intrinsic part of urban culture, although, some may yet be apprehensive towards khadi due to limited variety.
Symbol of empowerment Khadi has become a fabric of choice for designers today, but the journey from India’s tool of independence to an accepted fabric in the country required a lot of thought and hard work. Metaphor Racha, a Bengaluru-based brand by designer duo Ravikiran and Chandrashekar, has been working with khadi institutes in Karnataka. The brand

attempts to understand khadi not just as a mere fabric, but as a thought; a thought that kindles the spirit, to facilitate its use and services of the immediate surroundings. They add, “Khadi is still relevant today for it speaks of people involved, minimal use of technology and the decentralisation of power. It empowers the rural economy which is the backbone of our country.” For the designers, working with khadi is a humbling experience, where the soul is woven with the yarn and coarse nature of the fabric echoes the imperfections of life. Metaphor Racha has been working with many khadi institutes in Karnataka producing khadibased towels, napkins, sarees, etc. Red Sister Blue directly deals with the weavers, thus eliminating the need for middlemen and ensuring the weavers get their due share directly.
New routes ahead Malkha or malmal khadi, is a new variety of fabric that aims to promote ecological textile production and establish a ‘green industry’ in which India can lead the world. Be it dupattas or sarees, bedsheets or table runners, Malkha has found much acceptance in the market today. Pegged as a looming revolution, Malkha is managed, run and owned by the primary producers itself, and its structure is akin to a co-operative, linking spinners, weavers and even farmers. The mixed fabric that combines heritage with modern technology, is more lustrous, soft and pliable, giving designers more freedom to create new designs. Both, the Indian government and the private industries, are joining hands to make khadi popular once more, and to provide a much-needed impetus to the fabric of India, within the country and globally too.

In fact, when he first came to me three months ago, I very clearly and explicitly told him to go back and work on the script and come back later, and not do two other films while waiting for my consent. That was my condition for agreeing to do this film.” He added that RGV set everything else aside and worked on the script and came back to me. “That’s when I said yes. This is not the End Nagarjuna will be next seen in Karan Johar’s ‘Brahmastra’ along with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The film marks his comeback to Bollywood after a gap of 15 years. Signing off on a positive note he said, “I am very happy with my life. I couldn’t have asked for more. My children are doing well for themselves. I am still around in spite of having worked for more than 30 years. Of course, there are areas of dissatisfaction. But, life would get very boring without those.”
QUICK FACTS Nagarjuna has been the recipient of two National Film Awards, nine Nandi Awards and three Filmfare Awards (South). In Bollywood, he was last seen in JP Dutta’s LOC Kargil in 2003 and has also worked with Amitabh Bachchan in Khuda Gawah, which also starred the late actor Sridevi. He is the only hero to have shared the screen with his father and also with his son in Manam movie. He is the cofounder of an NGO Blue Cross of Hyderabad.

Exotic trees
Our Planet Earth is a beautiful place to live in and the lush environment it provides is responsible for the diverse range of flora that we see around us. Plants are fascinating living organisms. They can create their own food through photosynthesis, and also provide food for millions of others. They may seem mundane to some, but there are a few brilliantly exotic species found in far flung corners of this globe that are guaranteed to blow your mind.

Illawarra Flame Tree This tree, found mostly in the rain forests along the eastern coast of Australia, is easy to identify thanks to its bright, coral-red bell shaped flowers. When in full bloom, the flame coloured blossoms multiply abundantly in clusters taking over the branches in a breathtaking display. This can be seen once every five years. If you plant a tree from a seed in your garden, the first flowers will bloom in about 8 years.
