Many More to AirAsia! At the recently concluded World Travel Awards, AirAsia was named the World’s Leading Low-Cost Airline for the fifth straight year. The airline also won the inaugural World’s Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew award. AirAsia emerged top in the category, having received the highest votes from travel professionals and industry players from around the world. The win builds on AirAsia's success earlier this year when it secured WTA’s first ever Asia's Leading Low-Cost Airline Cabin Crew award and in 2015, when it became the first ever low-cost carrier to win Asia's Leading Cabin Crew, ahead of full service carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Korean Air and Cathay Pacific.

01 18

“I am very proud to receive the award. I’ve always said we are the world’s true low-cost champion, and I’m thrilled to see that the industry agrees with me. We will only get better as we continue on our digitalisation journey to better understand what our guests want and to make flying a richer, more enjoyable experience.” ~ Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, CEO, AirAsia Group

Fleet Size of AirAsia India is Now 14!

It was a joyous moment for AirAsia India with the induction of its 14th aircraft. The airline also introduced a new route connecting Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar and increased the frequency of flights connecting Bengaluru to Jaipur and Bhubaneswar. Speaking about the development, Amar Abrol, MD & CEO, AirAsia India, said, “We are happy to induct the 14th aircraft which was a target that we had set out to achieve this year. This is in line with our vision of providing regional connectivity and making air travel affordable for one and all. These routes will be operational from January 1, 2018."

AirAsia India's fleet size now increases to 14. 3. AirAsia India's latest office space in New Delhi.

AirAsia India recently inaugurated another corporate office in New Delhi. The new facility was inaugurated by AirAsia Allstars. The fully operational office located inside Aerocity, close to the International Airport, is designed on a 2,100 sq ft space and can accommodate up to 40 Allstars. The office is equipped with training, conference and meeting rooms and will house teams across corporate affairs, sales and New Delhi-based commercial Allstars. Talent recruitment has been one of the key investment areas for AirAsia India in 2017 and the airline aims to work towards building a robust team across India and increasing the headcount significantly to support its growing operations. AirAsia India currently flies to 16 destinations with its hubs in Bengaluru, New Delhi and Kolkata.

“New Delhi, which is also one of our hubs, is an important market for us. We have received a remarkable response to our initiatives in the past and see great scope for growth in this market. This is also a natural extension for us and stands as a testimony to AirAsia’s continued momentum and commitment to the country and Indian aviation.” ~ Amar Abrol, MD & CEO, AirAsia India

Experience the rich culture, tantalising food and multi-faceted sights of Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur as AirAsia X has achieved yet another milestone with the announcement of direct services from Jaipur to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with four times-weekly flights effective February 5, 2018. This new route was launched recently, offering promotional all-in fares from as low as `3,990* for economy seat and `9,990* one way for premium flatbed seats. Besides Jaipur to Kuala Lumpur, the airline offers Fly-Thru connectivity to countries such as Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan and Japan. Guests can pick from a variety of destinations such as Melbourne, Sydney, Bali, Beijing, Chengdu, Taipei and Tokyo from as low as `7,500. AirAsia X Chief Executive Officer Benyamin Ismail said, “Before this, guests from Jaipur wanting to travel to Kuala Lumpur would have had to first fly domestic to New Delhi or Mumbai to take a flight to Kuala Lumpur. With this new route, passengers can fly direct from Jaipur to Kuala Lumpur in only five-and-a-half hours.” Kuala Lumpur is the perfect representation of the harmoniously multiracial Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur’s world-famous landmark, the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), and the surrounding attractions that host cultural elements from the various ethnicities represented in Malaysia are some must-visit sites when visiting the capital city.

“We are very happy and proud to be the first low-cost carrier to offer seamless connectivity between India and the regional destinations through this unique route. We hope it will provide better connectivity for business and leisure travellers to travel to Southeast Asian destinations. India is a very important market to us, and we will continue to expand our services to key Indian cities including the second and third tier cities. We wish to express our greatest gratitude and appreciation to the Indian government and authorities for their tremendous support given to us to add this route into our network.” ~ Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia X Group

AirAsia Inaugurates First Flight to Kolkata from Johor Bahru AirAsia, the world’s best lowcost airline for nine consecutive years, recently celebrated an international inaugural flight into Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The newly launched international flight was received by the AirAsia Allstars, Pauzakham, DC, Customs, Parthararathy, Terminal Manager, AAI and two representatives from CISF and Bureau of Immigration at the Kolkata airport. This is the fifth new route launched by the airline into its Southern Malaysia hub in 2017 from Kolkata. The airline had also recently launched a flight from Kolkata to Bali via Kuala Lumpur. Apart from these two new routes, the AirAsia Group has direct flights from Kolkata to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

“AirAsia is pleased to connect Kolkata with Johor Bahru to further boost foreign tourist arrivals into both countries – this is also in line with our plan to improving direct connectivity.” ~ Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial, AirAsia Berhad

Fuelling the passion

“75% of your fitness regime is diet, 15% is rest and relaxation of the body and the mind, and the last 10% is exercise. You have to school yourself to not give in to temptation."

01 18

Eat Right, Feel Right Ankit Vats, an executive of Catering & Inflight Services at AirAsia India since 2015, believes that the physical well-being of an individual is a direct consequence of their diet and sleeping patterns. When he’s not crafting menus and strategising ways to improve guests’ inflight experience, Ankit can be found sweating it out at the gym. With his tight work schedule, not to mention being around yummy food so much, what keeps him motivated? Growing up a scrawny kid in Patna, Bihar, and then in New Delhi, Ankit had a tough time catching up with his mates. Frail and thin, he suffered bone breaks easily and often, forcing him to sit on the sidelines while others carried on without him. A proverbial wallflower at the playground, Ankit decided it was time to build his immunity and work on his core strength. “My motivation to start working out came from watching my friends participate in sports

18

without a care in the world, while I was held back for fear of yet another injury. My bones were weak and I had no muscle strength to speak of. My uncle pushed me to change my diet and create a timetable of sorts for my body,” Ankit describes how he started on his journey towards a healthier physique and mind. With his uncle's help, he started researching the best ways to get fit. While different experts had different advice to dispense, they all seemed to agree unanimously on one thing – diet is the key to a healthy body. So began Ankit’s trial and error process of adding and subtracting certain foods from his diet. “I started eating a lot of natural protein to gain some strength. For months on end, my diet consisted of eggs, chicken and pulses. In terms of exercise, I

Ankit Vats (Right) with a teammate, Sunil Thomas, Executive, Catering & IFS, outside the AirAsia India office.

started small – simple exercises and a lot of running to acclimatise my body to the rigorous exercising that was coming its way. I put on a lot of weight in a very short period of time. I started hitting the gym to tone the fat into muscle; I had the routine down pat, but then I started my first job. The exercise that had become an essential part of my day suddenly became a luxury.” Staying fit while trying to give 100% to your work is one of the biggest challenges that millennials face. Ankit, after so many years, has figured out how to maintain a balance between the two goals. “The trick is to compensate for the lack of exercise by eating right, and getting enough rest. Eat four-five small meals a day. Fruits and raw veggies make for excellent snacks, in place of samosas (deep-fried snack with a potato filling) and chips. In the morning, I make sure to have a healthy breakfast. On days that I don’t have time for a proper breakfast, I eat an energy bar. These days, we are spoilt for choices when it comes to ready-to-eat healthy food. Why not take advantage of that?” He adds, “75% of your fitness regime is diet, 15% is rest and relaxation of the body and the mind, and the last 10% is exercise. You have to school yourself to not give in to temptation. I keep a box of trail mix and veggies handy to avoid giving into hunger pangs.” Ankit believes that while it’s super important to get some exercise every day, it is diet more than anything else that leads the way to a healthy body.

Financial Planning and Career How often have we heard college graduates say that they dream of having a fulfilling career in a particular domain? What a fulfilling career means could vary from one individual to the other. It could mean avenues to fulfill your ambitions, challenge yourself intellectually or being Shyamali Basu, Senior Vice President surrounded by like -minded & Head - Products, HDFC Asset Management Co. Ltd. people. However, most people would agree that being able to adequately meet your family’s financial needs and aspirations would definitely be amongst the list of boxes to be checked in determining if a career is fulfilling or not. In fact, it’s a universal truth that higher earnings do play an important role in motivating employees. A case in point is use of variable pay by corporate to increase productivity. Although most of us are inclined to earn more at the workplace, how many of us actually give a serious thought to what we do with our hard earned money? It is no secret that young professionals are struggling to save/invest or plan financially. “Living in the moment” philosophy has been stretched a bit too far at times and when it comes to financial planning, delay of every day or month makes a huge dent to your financial corpus. Barring a few exceptions, it is practically impossible to bridge the gap of one’s financial misadventures by changing jobs. Many try doing that and end up jeopardising their careers as well. Any distraction in any form doesn’t augur well for the employee’s productivity. It is virtually impossible for a distracted employee to concentrate on his job. Businesses are affected by technological changes, never more so than today. Overarching impact of technology on various domains has redefined workforce requirements. Possibility of job losses has increased manifold. In view of this, following words by Warren Buffet seem more apt than ever before. “Never depend on a single income. Make investment to create a second income” This is the easiest thing to do to augment earnings. We need to make our earning work hard i.e. invest prudently considering our financial goals and investment horizon.

Gateway to the South Chennai, known as Madras until 1996, is a gem of a destination to discover in South India.

Inside Scoop

Ganesh Vancheeswaran, an author and an avid traveller, shares his favourites for a satisfying vacation in Chennai.

Start your day early with a visit to the centuries-old Kapaleeshwarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Walk through its cool, stonepillared corridors, as you admire the intricate carvings. A great breakfast option is the Mylai Karpagambal Mess nearby. Then explore the thriving market around the temple – shops selling offerings for the temple, silk sarees, books and various other knick-knacks line the streets.

The bustling metropolis of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, which was known as Madras until 1996, is now a city of over eight million people and a hub for several industries. For a traveller, Chennai is a convenient gateway to the rest of South India, the farthest corners of which are just an overnight journey away. The city itself has several attractions, including iconic temples and churches, a celebrated dance academy, buzzing markets and a rich food culture. Its location on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal means that the weather is hot and

36

humid for most of the year. But, for a brief few months between November and January, the weather is quite pleasant. This is also the time when several art and cultural festivals, like the Mylapore Festival in January, spring up across the city. Held at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, Chennai, this festival draws tourists from across the globe. Though the city has recently put on a more cosmopolitan garb, Chennai wears its traditions and love for local languages on its sleeve, which is perhaps its most endearing feature.

1. Carvings of the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Chennai. 2. Government Museum in Egmore

A quick auto ride will bring you to Armenian Street where you will find the little-known Armenian Church. It is a poignant reminder that a large trading community from Armenia used to once live in this city. After this, take a short walk to Parry’s Corner and hop into an auto rickshaw. Head to the Government Museum in Egmore, which has a gorgeous collection of stone and bronze idols and sculptures. In the evening, head to Kalakshetra in Besant Nagar. Try to catch a music or dance recital at the lovely Koothambalam, a performance arena built using the traditional building codes of India.

“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” This quote by Mahatma Gandhi rings so true! Come January, the streets of the national capital are full of frenzy and are the perfect backdrop to celebrate one of the most important milestones in the country's history. It was 68 years ago, on January 26, 1950, that India adopted the Constitution and declared itself a republic. The day is celebrated with parades and festivities being held across the country in state capitals, districts and taluka (administrative divisions of India denoting a subdistrict) headquarters. Those of us who have seen the grandeur of the Republic Day

parade taking place in New Delhi know that it is an incredible event that has to be witnessed at least once in a lifetime. It is nothing short of a mandate in each household to switch on the TV and watch the parade live in its entirety. The parade is presided over by the President of India and starts from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official home of the President, and makes its way down Rajpath, past the famous India Gate. It begins with marching regiments and bands from the three wings of the Indian defence forces - Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force (IAF). The forces also display their finest defence hardware

For the first time, the 2018 event will have the heads of all 10 Asean (Southeast Asian nations) countries as chief guests. Traditionally, India invites the head of state of another country to be the chief guest at the parade. The invitation is considered to be a matter of honour. Previous guests have included former US President Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, French presidents Chirac and Hollande, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Nelson Mandela among others.

Saluting History! India was declared a free nation on August 15, 1947. However, it was on January 26, 1950 when India declared itself a sovereign democratic republic state. The historic salute of 21 guns and flag hoisting by Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, heralded the birth of the Indian Republic. knowindia.gov.in

It was in the year 1955 that the first ever Republic Day parade was held. The parade rolled down Rajpath, which was known as Kingsway back in those years. Once the martial squadrons have completed their show, the mood changes to one of gaiety with a colourful parade of nearly two dozen floats representing the various states of India. There are

dancing and marching groups from schools and colleges and other creative displays that showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage. It culminates with two jaw-dropping feats; the first, a daredevil feat of the motorcycle unit of the IAF and the second, an aerial routine performed by the Surya Kiran team of the IAF with plumes of coloured smoke representing the national flag.

The Beating Retreat, held on the evening of January 29 every year, marks the end of the Republic Day celebrations. Majestic Meghalaya Meghalaya is not just any other tourist destination for Bhaswati Bhattacharya and Neeti Prasad, two childhood friends who make sure they travel and explore different destinations together despite a busy work schedule. Their recent trip to Cherrapunji was all about rediscovering new facets of a place that was so close to home.

M

eghalaya is not a tourist destination for us. This state takes us back to our childhood in a myriad of ways. Memories flood our minds – colourful raincoats, warm hugs from our mothers on windy evenings, beautiful cottages surrounded by colourful flower gardens, wooden floors and yummy Chinese food... Having grown up in Guwahati, in the neighbouring state of Assam, our families used to travel to Meghalaya very often. We remember visiting Shillong during the festive month of December when roads would be lit up and the city would be buzzing with high energy. We had been away from home for nearly a decade and decided that it was time to chase the clouds again. For too long had we been talking about taking a break from the busy city life of New Delhi. We were lucky to find company in each other for an impromptu trip. Soon, we set off to visit the land that was close to our hearts. Our journey started by taking a flight to Guwahati from New Delhi.

01 18

Road to rediscovery Our first jaunt in Guwahati after landing was to meet our respective families. After a night halt at our homes, we set off on a road trip in a shaky old Maruti 800 the very next day and reached Shillong by mid-morning. The roads there were extremely crowded and bustling with cars, shops and roadside hawkers. Ravenous, we ate quickly and left for Cherrapunji, locally known as Sohra. Having spent only our childhood here, we had faint memories of what Cherrapunji looked like, so this journey felt like an entirely novel experience.

"The Mawsmai Cave houses various species of flora, as well as bats and insects in abundance. The striking rock formations here, created by dripping water, are a wonder of nature."

Although it is just 50km away from Meghalaya’s bustling capital, the road to Cherrapunji seemed like a different world. The breathtaking landscape on both sides was a spellbinding sight. The weather was extremely erratic on the way. In about an hour and a half, we witnessed clear skies, clouds, a drizzle and finally a heavy shower. Apart from the mesmerising view outside our windows, the taxi driver kept us entertained with several stories and legends about this place. As we neared the Sohra Valley, the clouds came lower and lower, enveloping us. We could almost play with the puffs right outside the window! After a beautiful drive, we were finally in Sohra. Our first stop was the Nohkalikai Falls. This elusive waterfall can be spotted from a treacherous height of 1,100ft. The

44

water gushes down from the top of the gorge into a deep green pool below. The view is absolutely spectacular. It took us a few minutes of complete silence to absorb the beauty of what we were seeing. Next on our agenda was the Mawsmai Caves where we witnessed natural limestone formations. The 820ft-long cave is lit up with halogen lamps, giving a clear view of what’s inside. The cave houses various species of flora, as well as bats and insects in abundance. The striking rock formations here, formed out of dripping water, are a wonder of nature. After our exploration of the caves, we decided to take a break at a little stall nearby. As we sipped on piping hot tea, the two of us chatted about our trip. Quality of life in the city versus small towns, simple livelihood options for the people in Sohra, the definition of happiness and general admiration of the place dominated our conversation. By the time we finished, it was almost 4 pm. We really wanted to trek over the living root bridges, but sadly, the sun sets early in Meghalaya. Eagerly waiting for the next day to start, we left for

Tips for wanderlusters! Start early in the morning to make the most of your time and really explore a new destination. Do your homework about the place before you visit. Plan an itinerary before setting out to make the most of your travel. Keep emergency contacts ready in case of any problems. It is best to have a few local contacts for emergencies. Travel light. Pack only whatever is required. Also, wear clothes and footwear appropriate to the destination and the weather conditions. Those planning to visit Cherrapunji should have a pair of gum boots handy. For places like Sohra and smaller towns, keep cash handy; you’ll be hard-pressed to find an ATM here.

our abode, a quaint homestay in Sohra. We wanted to stay at a place surrounded by natural beauty, not concrete hotels, and our driver had the perfect options for us to choose from. Even though our guesthouse was pretty basic, we were more than happy to be surrounded by lush greenery. It was almost like living in the wilderness! Spontaneous is fun As we welcomed a new day, we decided to visit Dawki. A passing thought soon became an itinerary and we set out on a journey from Sohra to Dawki, covering a

distance of approximately 85km. Straddled on the border of Meghalaya and Bangladesh, Dawki is one of the lesser-known border towns in the country offering scenic vistas and an unforgettable experience. What left us thrilled here was a boat ride on the sparkling Umngot River, flowing between India and Bangladesh. When evening came, it was time to head back to Guwahati. Although we spent only a few hours here, we took back memories for a lifetime. Together we can! Though we had only two days to explore the beauty and aura of Meghalaya

(mainly Cherrapunji and Dawki), we were more than content with the experiences we gained during our travels. Travelling with a partner who functions on the same wavelength is imperative to a wholesome, drama-free trip. Our partnership is a clear example of how two travel enthusiasts can explore new places together, respect each other’s preferences and adjust to rapidly changing situations. Until next time, we have memories of beautiful landscapes, mystical waterfalls and clear blue skies. We know they will soon call us back.

organisations blooming in the national capital. My initial tryst was with the St+Art India Foundation, a non-profit organisation working towards changing the landscape of New Delhi. It was a small start made by a group of young, likeminded dreamers – Arjun Bahl (New Delhi), Akshat Nauriyal (Uttaranchal), Giulia Ambrogi (Italy), Thanish Thomas (Kerala) and Hanif Kureishi (Gujarat). They painted the neglected walls of the DDA apartments in Shahpur Jat, a large colony near the Asian Games Village in South Delhi. This initiative was undertaken by these art enthusiasts to make the streets come alive

and also gather everyone to freely express their creativity. “Back in those days, Shahpur Jat was an urban village that was rapidly changing. Its proximity to high-class colonies in South Delhi led to the opening of posh boutiques and cafés. So it provided us with an interesting space for an art intervention since we wanted to work in a high-density area which was also navigable by foot,” says Arjun Bahl, co-founder of St+Art, and also one of the participants involved in the Shahpur Jat project. This kick-started a new revolution! News about the Shahpur Jat street art transformation spread

like wildfire. The best thing about this movement was that it provided a new canvas to budding talents in this arena. Street art soon became de rigueur in many South Delhi circles. Another group that soon came into the limelight was Delhi Street Art, founded by Yogesh Saini, an avid travel and nature photographer, blogger and digital artist. This group was responsible for giving all the garbage bins of Lodhi Gardens (in New Delhi) an artistic twist. Some of their notable contributions in this segment can be seen at Nehru Place in South Delhi and Janak Puri in West Delhi. Unlike the old days, when scribbling on the walls was considered as a punishable offence, these initiatives now, ironically, are backed by government agencies like the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Central Public Works Department. Platform for the like-minded Just after the inception of this trend in the national capital, a two-month long street art festival was observed in the city in 2015, bringing together independent streets artists on the same platform. This particular festival

Young talent flew in from as far away as Australia, the Netherlands, the United States, Singapore, Cambodia, Iran, Mexico and Japan to add colour to the washed-out walls of New Delhi. Talking about the motivation behind starting this organisation, Hanif says, “We wanted to make art popular, mainstream and accessible for the common man. During the festival, each artist had a different agenda – personal pleasure, popularity, or a social cause.” Whatever may be the inspiration, the end results left everyone impressed.

Surrounded by greenery, the Arjan Garh Metro Station is the entry point to New Delhi. But as you move ahead, the scenario changes drastically, and this is what prompted Singaporean artists SKLo and Soph O to transform this metro station. The colourful drawings of kingfisher and mynah birds, native to both India and Singapore, juxtapose nature on this urban landscape. According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the project is aimed at promoting art and culture in the country. When I started exploring more about the artists for a photo excavation, I came across a renowned artist named Daku. A new look As fancy as all this looks, it is certainly not an easy task to seek permission for painting the streets. One of the artists told me how he had to run after various state and municipal authorities for permissions to paint the facades of government buildings. haratpur Bird Sanctuary, now known as Keoladeo National Park, is a wetland in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, that was created almost 250 years ago by the erstwhile king Maharaja Suraj Mal. Commonly known as Ghana by the local residents, the park started out as a dirty marsh, but is now a green haven for a variety of avifauna. During the winter months, from October to February, hundreds of ornithologists and bird-watchers flock to the park to study ducks, geese, raptors and a vast variety of migratory birds. At present, approximately 230 bird species, as well as a number of fish and reptiles, are protected at Keoladeo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I embarked on a road trip from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, my hometown, via the Yamuna Expressway to reach Bharatpur. Though I had been here before, this time I had brought along my new camera with a 500mm lens, hoping to capture the beauty of the park. After covering a distance of approx 390 kilometres, I finally made it to the hotel. By the time I reached the hotel, the sun had started to set. So, I decided to call it a day and head to the national park early next morning. As decided, I started my day early and finally reached the Keoladeo National Park. At the entrance gate stood a number of rickshaw pullers who, after several years of working here, consider themselves no less than any ornithologist. They are always eager to share their knowledge with visitors. Selecting one, I set out on the safari. Reunion It was around six in the morning. My camera held tightly in

my hands, we set off on the same trail I had explored on my previous visit to this bird sanctuary. The first birds I came across were coots. These migratory ducks were diving into a pond and popping up with grass in their flat beaks. My guide and rickshaw puller, Jwala Singh, told me that the ducks were herbivores and fed only on aquatic plants. Next came the stork colonies, and I could hear the screaming of young storks even before I saw them. Once there, I saw trees as tall as buildings, with nests for balconies. The parent storks were out en masse, collecting food for their little ones. The whole forest was noisy, with its residents chattering, screeching and squawking at one another.

I was amazed at the variety of birds, wildlife and greenery of the place. As we made our way further and further down the path, I came across so many more species of animals. I just couldn’t stop clicking away, thanking my foresight to bring a better-quality camera. Before I knew it, hours had gone by and the sun was about to set. I climbed up one of the wooden observation towers that the sanctuary is peppered with. In the pink twilight, I could see cattle returning to the villages, turtles crawling back to their watery homes after a long day of basking in the sun and various birds settling into their nests for the night.

Know your Birds

To identify the birds you see on your trip, carry a field guide specific to the Indian subcontinent. Try your hand at identifying birds by observing the following characteristics – wing shape (width and length), body shape (size of the body in relation to the wings), tail (length and shape), wing rhythm (does the bird soar, glide or flap?), sound, and flock size (solitary or part of a group).

Date with Nature

01 18

Carry binoculars to study the birds without needing to get too close and disturbing their natural habitat. Enjoy the sights, but don’t forget to take pictures of your new friends and their beautiful homes. If possible, carry a DSLR camera along. I also advise you to carry a monopod/ tripod and a telephoto lens of 200mm-500mm. Respect Mother Nature. Opt for dull clothes in shades of green, olive or white. Wear sturdy hiking shoes that can help you tread through mud and sludge. Don't shout or make any other loud noises.

Light was fading when we climbed down the tower and headed back to our rest house. All we could hear were the flapping of wings and the howling of jackals in the distance. Soon, the forest fell silent, its residents settling in for the night. The only sound that remained was the crushing of gravel under our feet. Night set in, bringing with it a cool breeze. I shivered, reaching for my jacket, while our trusted Jwala Singh, wearing only khaki shorts and a green shirt, moved without care, used to the low temperatures. His head raised high, he relentlessly tried to find owls to show me! Finally, we reached the rest house amidst the forest reserve. After a delicious dinner of dal chawal (rice and pulses), I finally drifted off, colourful images of the day’s adventure swirling in my mind. New Day, New Findings The next morning was cold, my fingers numb. Even the young storks had puffed up against the chill! A peacock was

dancing in front of the gate, a special performance just for us! Suddenly, the mist cleared, and we saw the rosy pelicans. They were everywhere! In the soft blue of the early morning sky, the pink shades of the pelican made for a divine sight. I set off on another trek on the second day of my trip. In Bharatpur, a number of well-hidden nooks have been created across the park to allow guests to observe the birds in silence. I had the same rickshaw puller who took me around on the first day of my trek here. We preferred to walk on the quieter pugdundees, or trails, instead of the main road. Brahminy starlings and olive sunbirds greeted us on our trek, amid dense green shrubs, moss and algae growing on rock-hewn stairs. This pleasant trail was like a path to heaven.

As I crouched behind a shrub, I heard a splash — so did the kingfisher I was trying to photograph. Scared, it flew away. I turned to see where the sound had come from, when suddenly a herd of nilgai jumped into the pond behind, charging in my direction, then thundering past! Goosebumps sprung all over my arms as I watched these beautiful creatures make their way down the road, scaring away the birds and tourists in their path. Finally, it was time to leave, and I spent a few quiet moments with the birds, saying goodbye to the residents of Bharatpur. I’ll always remember Bharatpur as a haven for my feathery friends, and it will always have a precious place in my heart.

Sujourn to Santiniketan DV Guruprasad shares his travel tale of Santiniketan, West Bengal. My recent day trip to Santiniketan from Kolkata in West Bengal was a mesmerising one. There are a number of fast trains that run daily between Kolkata and Santiniketan, making it possible to cover the quaint town in one day. As I reached my destination, I met with the Station House Officer (SHO) of the local police station. To my surprise, he offered to take me around. Initially, I was a bit reluctant but was finally convinced with his conviction of knowing the town well.

VIT Students Triumphant at Rajasthan Hackathon 3.0 Utkarsh Kumar and Vansh Arora, first year students of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), earned the top honours at Rajasthan Hackathon 3.0 – the biggest government hackathon event organised in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The students, who were also the youngest participants at the event, built an Augmented Reality (AR) app (Team Bhai) for tourism, which enhances tourists’ experience. Over 1,800 participants gave a demonstration of 450 different projects in the preliminary states and 13 of them were shortlisted for the finals. On the inspiration behind the startup, Utkarsh Kumar said, “My mother is fond of history and she is the reason behind making the AR app a reality.”

After a long discussion, we headed out to explore Santiniketan. Our first stop was at the famous Kala Bhavan Complex. The lecturer present there recognised the SHO and showed us round. Further, we went to a nearby canteen for a meal break and then headed to see the Prayer Hall made purely out of glass. Close by is Santiniketan Gruha, a two-storeyed building where Rabindrantah Tagore’s father Debendranath Tagore stayed. We also visited Sangeetha Bhavan next. We could hear the students rehearsing for a forthcoming program. By the time we finished seeing Sangeetha Bhavan, it was lunch time already. We had a quick Bengali lunch in a nearby restaurant and went to see the Amar Kuteer, our last stop here. Located at a distance of 6km from Santiniketan, Amar Kuteer is famous for painted leather articles and printed cotton clothing. It was finally time to head back to Kolkata. After I parted ways with the SHO, I had a constant smile on my face and a content heart of having covered this destination.

love travelling, and not just for work! I am hardly ever in Mumbai. I love visiting places and meeting new people. When you go to a place and come back, you leave a part of yourself there. There is a sense of belonging that travelling gives. Travel is an essential part of who I am. My father travelled by land all the way from Germany to India in the 1970s. I grew up listening to stories of how travel defined, inspired and influenced my parents’ lives and their life choices. So, in a way, it’s hardwired into my DNA! The TV show Ganga – The Soul of India, which aired recently on a leading lifestyle channel, gave me the opportunity to discover my country through its people. It was

the most enriching journey of my life! It started from Gangotri – the source of the Ganges – and took us through five different states. I travelled to several towns along the majestic Ganges, from Gomukh in the Himalayas to the Gangasagar Delta where it meets the Bay of Bengal. The Ganga is one of the greatest rivers of India – a river that carries stories of our history. It is a trajectory of our present and a measure of our future. Feeding over 400 million people, it cuts across

Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Each day of my journey was filled with moments to cherish, be it crossing the raging river, climbing mountains at Uttarkashi or dancing with the Santhal tribals of Sonajhuri in West Bengal. While it is wonderful to escape to a place of comfort that is familiar, I am always more excited to explore new destinations. used to be known as the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram in Rishikesh; Himalayan Environmental Studies & Conservation Organisation (HESCO) near Dehradun; Mussoorie and Devprayag in Uttarakhand; Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh and Shantiniketan in West Bengal among others. Modern and ancient, old and new, I discovered so many facets of India along the course of the shoot. It was amazing to try out local cuisine at eateries and homes during the shoot. Right from the well-known eating joints like Kewpies in Kolkata, and La Tavola Conte and Chotiwala in Rishikesh, to home-cooked meals with local families in Allahabad and dhabas (roadside eateries) along the way, I dug into the best of culinary worlds.

From -7⠰C at Gangotri to higher temperatures towards the Bay of Bengal, we shot for the show through it all. Though the process was more challenging during the winter, I enjoyed it. The breathtaking sight of snow-covered mountains in the higher ranges was almost enough to make me forget about the chilling temperatures! During the course of the journey, I also faced and overcame a lot of my fears. I participated in adventure sports – something that I was, till now, quite afraid of. From a thrilling

I would love to revisit the Ganges, spend some quality time in the forests of Uttarakhand and learn more about the Gangetic dolphins and the work being done to save them. The show did more for me as a person than any school, any book or any experience has done. To me, travel is soulful. It makes us who we are.

Divine beauty of the river "The Ganga, especially, is the river of India, beloved of her people, round which are intertwined her memories, her hopes and fears, her songs of triumph, her victories and her defeats. She has been a symbol of India's age-long culture and civilisation, ever changing, ever flowing, and yet ever the same Ganga." - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

Dia's ideal vacation!

Given a choice, Dia favours forests, hills and natural geographies. She says, "I prefer the seclusion of places that allow for some 'me' time, while also giving me an opportunity to explore. During my various visits to Pench, I have learnt much about the place on my own. I go for treks around the villages and am amazed at the lifestyle and craft of the local Gond tribals. I usually write down a daily journal of my stay when I travel solo. Reading about the experiences once I’m back is soul satisfying."

Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh is one of my go-to places. The Pench River, the open hilly terrain, teak forests and jungle streams are a veritable haven. In fact, India is my favourite travel destination. There is so much to do and explore in our country. Just keep your heart and mind open. Travel by road if you can; there is magic in slow travel – those memorable stops,

1. Rishikesh in Uttarakhand was one of the destinations that caught Dia's attention. 2. Dia in Gomukh, Uttarakhand.

those heart-to-heart conversations and the delicious meals along the way – these make the journey truly special and memorable. Visit historical sites, pick up local handicraft, meet indigenous musicians and discover the beauty of nature and the vibrant ecology. That’s how you enjoy the essence of any destination and make the most out of your travels.

cabin comfort

Joy of Flying Whether on a short- or long-haul journey, flying can be a pleasant experience if you are well-prepared. Here are some simple steps to ensure you have a safe, smooth and comfortable journey.

Onboard Care

Inflight Exercises

Troy Bantleman, personal trainer to celebrity athletes and AirAsia big boss Tony Fernandes shows you how to perform easy exercises for a comfortable flight.

Aircraft cabins are generally very dry and dehydration can occur easily. To overcome this:

Drink lots of water but ensure the intake is slow and regular. Drinking too much water suddenly will cause the body to expel the water quickly too, forcing you to visit the toilet frequently.

01 18

Tricep Stretch

Lower Back Stretch

Side Neck Stretch

Extend one hand down the centre of your back, while grasping your elbow with the other. Exhale slowly while pulling gently downward on your elbow, with your fingers aligned with your spine.

While seated, lift a knee up toward your chest and hold the position for 30 seconds. Gently lower the knee and perform three 30sec sets, alternating between both knees.

Gently tilt your head till you feel the stretch in your neck. Hold the position for 30 seconds and release slowly. Change sides and repeat until you have done three 30sec sets on both sides.

Prevent DVT Deep Vein Thrombosis can occur when a blood clot forms in the large veins of the legs or arms, blocking blood circulation. Inactivity during long flights may lead to the occurrence of DVT. If you are flying long distance, ensure you perform inflight exercises such as those listed above as a precaution against developing DVT. When possible and permissible, stretch your legs and walk along the aisle. Be aware of symptoms such as pain or swelling in the legs, which can happen even after you disembark. Seek medical attention if these occur.

88

Beat the Lag

Lubricate your eyes with eye drops, as eyes are aggravated by dry atmosphere. Also, ditch the contact lenses and opt for spectacles during the flight. Hydrate your skin by applying moisturiser or spraying a body spritzer on exposed body parts. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, or keep intake to a minimum.

Ear Comfort

To counter the effects of jetlag, get as much sleep as possible when flying west to east. When flying in the reverse direction, try to stay awake as much as you can. AirAsia’s chic Snug-as-a-bug hoodie keeps you cosy with its neck pillow attached to a soft hooded collar, and is easily deflated for storage upon landing. Enjoy savings when you pre-book this item at bigdutyfree.com

Changes in air pressure or altitude cause our ears to ‘pop’ and sometimes ache during take-offs and landings. For a comfortable flying experience, suck on sweets or, mimic the act of chewing and swallowing if you do not have any sweets with you. This will relieve the discomfort and help stabilise the pressure in the ear canals. Pacifiers will work just as well for toddlers. If you have a cold, use a nasal decongestant to clear your nasal passage and alleviate the ache.
