CONCEPT

MAYA SRIVASTAVA OUGD 303 - FINAL MAJOR PROJECT BRIEF 1 - YEARBOOK (DFGA)

This brief was to design the yearbook for the Leeds College of Art BA (Hons) & FD Digital Film, Games and Animation course. I worked on this as part of a design team with Naomi Farrar, Robyn Makinson and Rob Green. The brief required that the college brand guidelines were adhered to, as well as the fact that each student needed to be represented fairly in the book.

The concept for this was to split the students up by discipline. This would be reflected through the use of colour - red, green, blue and yellow for filler pages. This is appropriate as DFGA is a predominantly digital course, so they work mainly in RGB. 1/5

COVER DEVELOPMENT

Initially, I did a lot of the cover design development. As DFGA were keen for something quite abstract, we came up with the idea of creating some sort of information graphic to represent the students on the course. The main content for this was based on the number of students and their disciplines. I then worked to try and create something that would reflect these figures. The colours I used matched the ones used for each discipline inside the yearbook. This ties the book together well, as it means that the cover relates directly to what is contained within. The final cover design was Rob’s.

STUDENT PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

MAYA SRIVASTAVA OUGD 303 - FINAL MAJOR PROJECT BRIEF 1 - YEARBOOK (DFGA)

Along with Rob and Robyn, I was responsible for the student portrait photography. We decided to do the photography ourselves as it was a fairly straightforward shoot that we required. After getting everything set up the way we wanted, and a few test shots, Rob took the role of camera man, while Robyn and I kept track of which students we had photographed, the order of the students, and following up with them for any information that we were missing. As a handful of students didn’t turn up, we had to arrange another shoot to get the rest of the photos that we required.

Rob then had the job of editing the photographs, which the rest of us were then able to use in the layouts of our allocated sections.

GAMES SECTION

Robyn, Naomi and I took a section of the yearbook each to work on. I was responsible for the layout of the games section (blue). Once we had decided on one general overall layout for the student pages, I then had to adapt this for each of the students to work with the images that they had provided. This also involved a lot of image resizing in order to ensure that everything was in a print-ready format (e.g. CMYK and 300dpi). 4/5

OTHER SECTIONS WITHIN THE YEARBOOK

The other sections within the yearbook include film (green) and animation (red), as well as the filler pages, which are in yellow. The other designers primarily worked on these, while I developed cover designs, as well undertaking some of the more administrative tasks, such as note taking and organisation of material.
