BEATING CANCER! cancer too. The campaign’s message is a simple one: set a weekly reminder on your phone and get to know exactly how you feel. You’re the first defence in catching the disease early.
FEEL YOURSELF Feel Yourself is a new charity campaign based in Southsea aimed at raising awareness for breast and testicular cancer in younger people. Both diseases are on the increase and tend to be more aggressive in younger people, and unlike cervical cancer, there is no regular screening offered to detect these cancers. Both are treatable if found early, so regular checking and self awareness really can be the difference between life and death. 8
MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
The campaign aims to visit as many festivals and events as possible to spread the message to young people that checking yourself every week should be a part of your beauty or health regime. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women under 39 and testicular cancer, while still relatively rare, is on the increase. Almost half of all testicular cancers are in men under 35, with 90% in men under the age of 55. And of course, men can get breast
Local businesses have been quick to realise the importance of the campaign, with the Belle Isle restaurant and Portsmouth based Strong Island both making the campaign an official charity. Several other businesses have donated prizes or offered services at a reduced rate to help the campaign get up and running, including Chilli Tattoo, Brilens, Garbo’s Hair, and Southsea Boutique Market. Legendary techno DJ Mark Archer of Altern8 has recently come on board to help promote the campaign on a global level. As well as encouraging his fans to check themselves, he will also be wearing an exclusive Feel Yourself DJ t-shirt at upcoming festivals and dance events. Local dance night Oblivion are donating all the proceeds of their next night at The Barn in Milton on 27th July to the campaign. The Honest Politician on Elm Grove in Southsea is holding Feel Yourself Campaign’s first fundraiser on Thursday 30th May, and the Feel Yourself team will be at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth Dockyard on 24th and 25th August handing out reminders and offering exclusive spray-on tattoos. There’s lots more information and useful links on the campaign website www.feelyourselfcampaign.org, as well as blogs from younger breast and testicular cancer survivors, and you can also find them on Facebook and on Twitter.

STRANGE BUT TRUE…
THIS IS MAYHEM!
AND HERE IS THE NEWS It’s a bit of an evening ritual, isn’t it? You get in from work, slump on the sofa, flick the telly over to the BBC, ITV, or your channel of choice, and see what’s going on in the world. In the current economic climate you’d be forgiven for thinking there was slim to no chance of hope – but that’s where we come in. Join our sharp-suited anchorman and count down the chimes on the Guildhall Square clock with our snazzy title sequence as he rides roughshod over current affairs and goes straight for the funnies...
ANDRES GARDIN – AKA. MR COCONU-T
DUCKY GETS HIS BUBBLE BURST
As we’re a globe-spanning news network, we were drawn to this – a giant rubber duck, crafted by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, has been found completely flat in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong – a rather disastrous end to its world travels. The bonkers bath-time favourite had managed to visit Amsterdam, Sydney and Sao Paulo before its accident, though a spokesman for the Harbour City shopping centre which arranged its Asian adventure has said that he ‘didn’t want to disappoint’ tourists who had made it an odd cult favourite. Quackers. 10 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
Panama’s answer to Chuck Norris, Gardin peels coconuts with his teeth. Having spent over 50 years honing the craft, the B. A. Baracus fan attributes his success to three surprising factors. ‘To peel coconuts, you’ve got to have jaw power. You’ve got to have teeth power. And you’ve got to have God’s power on your side.’ His dental dexterity could come in handy for breaking locks, catching bullets or for close combat with any fruit-based opponent.
ROBERT TUFTS, AKA. MINI-MAYOR
This precocious political power has a bizarre claim to fame. At only four years old, Tufts is the recently-elected mayor of Dorset. Before you throw down this magazine and decry the state of Britain’s political system, we’re not talking about the county: Dorset is also a town in Minnesota, with a population of 22 people. The other mayoral candidate was a three-legged goat! To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408
STRANGE BUT TRUE…
ONE IS NOT AMUSED… BUT EVERYONE ELSE IS!
The headline ‘Queen tells drummers to shush’, might be worth a snigger in itself, but there’s more to it than that. In this case it’s not Her Maj, but Dame Helen Mirren, appearing in the play The Audience, reprising her role as our nation’s sovereign in a sort of sequel to the 2006 film The Queen, but you still wouldn’t mess with her... She waited until the interval at least, leaving London’s Gielgud Theatre to rebuke the noisemongers, who were promoting a gay/transgender rights parade, and has since backed the cause and apologised for her rant – still brilliant, though, no?
GEORGE THE BASSETT HOUND – AKA. SCOOBY WHO?
All the best teams have a canine companion (Mystery Inc.) and we think we have discovered the world’s smartest dog. George saved his own life by dialling 999 and calling an ambulance! Lassie could walk on his hind legs, but we never saw him use a phone. We probably should add that George’s situation was caused by him getting tangled in the phone wires. And his owner claims that ‘he’s really dopey and just likes to chew socks’. Yeah, maybe it was a coincidence.
Don’t try this at ho me !
BERTHA – AKA. GLITTERELLA
Every super-group needs a Hawkeye, but at least Bertha’s special power is more interesting than good eyesight: she has an unquenchable thirst for nail-polish. Featured on TLC’s My Strange Addiction, the 24 year old describes glittery polish as her favourite. ‘When I drink it, I think I’m shining through my stomach and shining on the outside’. It is unlikely kids will be fighting over who can be Bertha in the playground.
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE HEALTH AND SAFETY NIGHTMARE It’s just reaching us that the maiden preview staging of a new West End musical retelling of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, directed by Sam Mendes, has been put back by five days, owing to what has been officially put down as an unforeseen hitch in delivering a piece of stage engineering. If rumours are to be believed, there were plans to have an actual chocolate river running as part of the set. Anyone who’s seen the classic Gene Wilder screen version of the story will know that this proves to be the undoing of greedy Augustus Gloop, and we think it would be amazing, the Health and Safety jobsworths behind the decision proving themselves to be a bunch of joyless Wonkas. I’m afraid that’s all we have time for, but always look on the bright side of life – even if the serious side of the news makes you wonder. Some things in life are bad, they can really make you mad, and other things just make you swear and curse, but when you’re chewing on life’s gristle just switch to Channel Mayhem! and have a giggle! TWEET TWEET!
ALL A-TWITTER Here at Mayhem!, we quite like a spot of social media ornithology, and that’s why you’ll find us hunting Twitter users with the same zeal Bill Oddie displays in his attempts to bother birds on Springwatch. Everywhere we turn in the quest for a quiet place in the staff garden to sit and contemplate, gathering ideas for what to include in each brand spanking new issue, we seem to hear a faint tapping noise…and no, it isn’t a woodpecker. More often than not it’s the sound of fingers dancing across laptop keyboards, users commenting on every little thing they see, do, or hear. Which in itself isn’t a bad idea depending on point of view, but there are only so many ‘OMG! Just had a sandwich!’ updates anyone can stomach, so join us at the finishing school of Social Netiquette and become a better, more refined Cyberman or woman.
COMPUTER LOVE That said, it can’t all be bad news – there are some genuinely informative and funny people out there in the Twittersphere, and it’s a great source of news. It can also give you amazing new potential leads if you’re looking for specific products or interests, and it’s an easy way to keep in touch with followers.
RISE OF THE CYBERMEN Since it burst onto our screens in 2006, seemingly everyone who’s ever owned or even thought about buying a computer has a Twitter account. In practice it’s a great idea – 140 characters or less to tell other users your views on the things in the world that really matter, the chance to follow and be followed by like-minded users. But think before you post – do you want your little corner of the online universe to be a haven of insight or a forum for making what should be private personal? 12 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
We know which we’d go with, and if it were up to us we’d set our own private army of Cybermen on anyone deemed boring or just plain offensive – it’s only fair, they get restless if we don’t give them enough people to ‘delete’, and given that the world and his dog has an online presence these days that’s a lot of potential snooze-fests and exasperated ‘Oh Gods’, possibly punctuated by the sound of banging your head against your keyboard.
Indeed, if you fancy yourself as a bit of an entrepreneur it can work for you as a business tool – it’s multi-purpose! On a cautionary note, though, as with anything rooted in social media, with great power comes great responsibility – and we can’t stress that enough, boys and girls. After all nobody wants their hashtag heaven turning to hell, do they? Keep your wits about you, and have fun out there!

Said to be the earliest of Shakespeare’s plays, Two Gents has all the hallmarks of one of the best Shakespearean comedies: two sets of starry-eyed lovers, cross dressing, dodgy outlaws and a whole raft of comedy!

26TH JUNE–6TH JULY
‘Following the huge success of The Comedy of Errors in 2012, TFT offers another vibrant early comedy. 21ST–31ST AUGUST
He may not have been found in our car park but watch the power hungry and ruthless Duke of Gloucester plot charm, deceive and murder his way to power in this infamously unhistorical history play. The luckless brother drowned in a butt of malmsey wine, the two young nephews brutally murdered in the Tower, the kingdom offered for a horse – these are just some of the legendary moments in this most popular of Shakespeare’s gripping English tragedies.

TODAY’S THE DAY THE MAYHEM! BEARS HAVE THEIR
PICNIC With the sun blazing in the sky and glorious woodland and beaches just there for the taking, why not gather up some friends or family and go for a picnic in the fine spirit of National Picnic Week (17th–23rd June)?

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY…
We at Mayhem! can’t wait to take our beloved teddy bears for some fun and nibbles, so why not come with us as we pack a pic-a-nic basket and try to avoid the attentions of Ranger Smith, while proving we’re smarter than the average bear?
A PICNIC IN PARIS The first use of anything approaching the word ‘picnic’ appears to be its inclusion (in the original French) as pique-nique, within the pages of Origines de la Langue Francaise, or Origins of the French Language (1692). It was originally taken to mean a group of people dining in a restaurant but each bringing along their own wine, with the notion of everyone contributing a little something to the effort surviving to this day. Staying en Francais for a while longer (and why not, it’s a lovely country), following the 1789 Revolution, royal parks were opened to the public for the first time ever, and picnicking in its modern sense became wildly popular. It didn’t take too long for their social equivalent across the Channel to sit up and pay heed, either – the Picnic Society formed by a group of fashionable Londoners in the early 19th Century, meeting in Oxford Street’s Pantheon, with each member providing their fair share of both food and entertainment. But happily it’s not too late to bring back that particular noble tradition, if you so wish! And if the weather’s rotten, why not host a happy gathering in your own front room?
A-TISKET, A TASKET, A GREEN AND YELLOW BASKET And what to put in the basket itself? Providing you’ve found a lucky special someone to picnic with without managing to write a letter to them and then dropping it on the way, as in the famous nursery rhyme, you should be sorted. Failing that, find some friends or a beloved teddy and get to work on some tasty treats to fill everyone with a lovely sense of summer, and possibly a bit of bloating. If you need a little help, where better to try than the Good Food channel? Available at the touch of a button on either Sky channel 247 or Virgin Media channel 260, they also have some mouthwatering goodies at uktv.co.uk/food/homepage/sid/5890. After all, you’ll always be sure to include marvellous things to eat and wonderful games to play in these matters, with a sprinkling of gadding about, playing and shouting. Then in our case, at six o’clock our mummies and daddies will take us home to bed because we’re tired Mayhem! bears – knackered from all the fun! SAWYER INTERVIEW BY SIMONE SARSFIELD & ALYSON WATTS
“I actually LOVE what I do” 18 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408
ONE TO ONE WITH… You’re extremely busy with a packed agenda, do you live to work or work to live? I actually LOVE what I do so the word ‘work’ doesn’t mean the same as it does I suspect in other people’s vocabularies. I can’t get enough of my businesses and how great the rewards are when you succeed so I guess the answer is I live to work! It appears you have a very glamourous lifestyle, which probably doesn’t reflect how hard you actually work. Do you have any surprising stories that you could share? Elements of my life are glamourous, but you can be sure that for instance, if I’m off to my house in the Caribbean for a vacation, I’ll be working even in the airport lounge until I board the front of the plane and they put a glass of champagne in my hand...then I have no choice but to stop! How did you get started as a dealer? It was a bit of an accident. I used to like hunting the junk shops for interesting things and spotted a pencil sketch. It made a great profit and the rest is history. You’re married with two kids, which is enough for most people. How difficult is it to juggle the work life and home life? Very hard work. You need to be very well organised and plan everything as much as you can. It’s possible to get on top of it though, and it’s possible to do both successfully without the help of full time nannies. Is it difficult to switch between the two or is there a clear line between the two? No it’s very difficult, often if my children are watching TV, I’ll carry on working, which to them is a bit annoying as they want me with them, even if its only in presence. I try and play/sit with them as much as possible in the evening but if there is a rush project on I do have to renege sometimes.
Does your family enjoy your new-found television fame? They’ve already got used to it, but on the whole yes. I think it was more exciting for them the first time around, now they’ve seen me on the box a few times, they tend to take it for granted a bit now! You’ve said you love ‘beautiful things’, have you ever bought anything deemed un-beautiful for clients because you knew they would love them? Yes a table once for one client which was extremely ugly, but he loves some really grotesque items for his private collection so in a way, it was fun to buy something which is the opposite to items I would normally consider buying. What is the best thing that you have bought and still own? I bought and still have the road kill couture where Jess Eaton uses animal killed on the roads for pieces of art and sculptures that you can also wear. Do you remember the first collectible that you bought and sold? Do you remember how much profit you made? My first collectible was a small pencil drawing by Salvador Dali, which sold at a whopping 150% profit. I wish they were all this good! Have you ever regretted not buying something, only to see it elsewhere looking exquisite, and what was it? An antique silver cigarette box, it was unique in detail and design, and I saw it in another dealer’s shop and was sickened. How transferable are the skills that you have between the industries in which you work? Because I am a businesswoman, the skill sets are mainly communication and common sense, so I use these in every business and in everything I do in life.
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
You’re quoted to have said, ‘It’s great to be a woman in a man’s world’, can you explain further? There are more men than women in the world of dealing art and collectibles, and so it is very testosterone run. I enjoy playing the dumb blonde a bit, it gives the men a false sense of security as they think you haven’t a clue and then I work it by slipping in and getting a great deal that either they wanted or have just sold me at a fantastic price!
“Whatever you do make sure it’s something you enjoy and those qualities should come naturally with it.” Drive and enthusiasm are very undervalued skills, but can they be taught? I’m not sure you can teach people to have drive and enthusiasm, I think if I were to advise I would say whatever you do make sure it’s something you enjoy and those qualities should come naturally with it. Your image on Four Rooms is reminiscent of ‘Emma Peel’ (The Avengers, glamourous agent). Was this a deliberate look or just the average day in the office get up? It certainly wasn’t deliberate, I don’t copy people and I don’t actually think I’m anything like Emma Peel, however the press etc often do! I work out and keep fit and like sexy clothes that fit snuggly, so if that creates her look then that’s fine with me, I can think of worse examples! JUNE 2013 | MAYHEM!

ONE TO ONE WITH…
“ There is always a bit of mayhem in my life.”
Viewers may read the glamour as lightweight and misunderstand your achievements. How important is your image to you and your clients? Well my life can be very glamourous but it hasn’t always been by far. I’ve scrubbed floors, worked in three jobs at a time, slept on friend’s floors, and I hope people know that I started with nothing. Whilst my friends were out with wealthy guys, I would be working and striving to create a good business grounding. I do hope that people don’t make those assumptions as nothing is ever easy. My clients know how down to earth I am, and yes it is important that they do. Did you need a lot of capital to get started? I would always advise that you should really buy small to start with as I did. Rarely you will be an expert until you’ve gained experience and been in the business for some time. 20 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
It’s very clear that you know your markets. Are there any areas that have surprised your interest and made you want to learn more about them? I’m very interested in new up and coming artists and this has been made clear by working on Four rooms (on channel 4), as I have seen myself drawn to this area more and more. You have also talked people into not selling items that you feel should remain in their family. Is there a personal item you have bought but would never sell? I don’t have anything from my own family history that would be relevant, but if it’s something I’m buying in business, then everything is for sale eventually so no! What have been some of the most striking or unusual items that people have brought onto Four Rooms?
My Road Kill Couture in my mind. It blew us all away as none of us had seen anything like it before. Who would you like to see play you in a film (male or female)? Roger Moore as he’s funny, handsome and suave (I think I’d need to brush up on the suave bit!)’ What’s next – are there any areas that we could see you make a surprise move into? I’m not saying, I’m looking at something right now, but we’ll have to see whether or not it transpires first! Do you always feel perfectly in control or is there a little Mayhem! in your life? There is always a bit of mayhem in my life. There has to be as I’m always doing a million things at once, it’s organised chaos!

MAKING A FRESH START
DEALING WITH REDUNDANCY It’s a hammer blow. A personal apocalypse, the end of your life as you know it. No more luxuries, car, holidays – hell you might even lose your home. Repossession, bankruptcy and a life on the streets beckon. Not to mention the humiliation – let’s face it – losing your job really sucks!
But hold on a moment. Look at the bright side – it might just turn out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. So you’ve been made redundant. Ha, the idiots. Their loss, not yours – and this is where you can start to make them regret their decision.

REDUNDANCY = OPPORTUNITY! Sure it is! How often do we voluntarily give ourselves the chance to completely redefine both our life goals and professional ambitions, let alone have the opportunity to put them into practice?
REGISTER WITH THE JOB CENTRE Now listen. Do NOT let your silly pride stop yourself doing this. No it doesn’t mean you’re a failure or that everyone there will look down on you. And yes, they can help – they have a great database of job opportunities and, more often than not, a lot of companies will prefer to register their vacancies with a Job Centre rather than an agency. Why? Lots of good candidates and no commission to pay. You will also be able to claim Job Seeker’s Allowance (OK, it’s only about £65 a week, but would you rather that or nothing at all?) – and they’ll pay your National Insurance stamp for you for as long as you’re registered with them.
FLEXIBILITY How about considering a career shift? Utilise all that experience and expertise that you already have together with some new skills or even vocational qualifications. One professional agency claims that a lot of their clients ended up finding new roles with, in some cases, a higher salary than the one they’d had previously. Remember, this is about you, your life and your career – so take control and explore all your options.
DON’T HURRY There’s no immediate need to flood the market with your CV, nor visiting/ registering with all the agencies that will see you. Take your time. And avoid the all too easy temptation to apply for jobs that you can do: look to apply for those that you actually want – apart from anything else, that desire will stand out at interview and mark you above those who are there because it’s one they can simply ‘do’.
UPDATE YOUR CV A priority. Make sure it highlights your accomplishments – potential employers want to see actual evidence that you are an achiever and will be able to do just that with their business. Achievements, successes, targets achieved, initiatives developed and introduced, accomplishment. Make sure it demands attentionremember, it’s the conduit that is going to get you an interview.
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK I know, it’s one of those sickening ‘buzz’ words now and completely over-used. And yes, over-used it might be, but it’s also a skill that is tragically underused and undervalued. Most people that talk about it have, to be honest, no idea of what it means or how to do it. Make yourself the exception. If the thought of networking makes you feel awkward or you don’t feel you need to do so: try to get over yourself! When you’re talking to both old and new contacts, make it clear you respect their opinions and knowledge – and remember, the joy of networking might not be that they can help, but that they might know someone who knows of someone else who has a friend who is looking for someone just like you. You’d have no way of knowing that if you didn’t get out there and start talking about yourself. So do it!
Redundancy really could be the best thing that ever happened to you: it’s just a matter of attitude. Make yours a positive one.

Jun h (15t Day e Kit on Fly A
IT’S ELECTRIC Fly A Kite Day is actually a commemoration of Benjamin Franklin’s famous ‘Kite Experiment’ of 1752. He had been harbouring a hunch that lightning was nature’s electricity, and had been frantically scribbling theories in his notebooks, listing at least a dozen by the end of 1749. Allowing curiosity to get the better of him, one stormy night he set out with a metal key attached to a child’s kite, assisted by his son William, having proposed the experiment in 1750. According to myth surrounding the endeavour, he is said to have kept the section of string which he was holding dry, while allowing the rest to become wet to allow it to become a conductor for the prized electricity he was hoping to yield. 24 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
The metal key was attached to a Leyden jar (a glass jar with two electrodes, one on the inside and one outside), which Ben planned to use to store whatever energies he managed to harness. If he’d been struck by any visible lightning, he would have been killed instantly, barring a miracle, but luckily for him he wasn’t struck. In the course of his kiting, though, he noted that the kite’s strings were repelling each other, a sure sign that the Leyden jar was being charged with something. And he was proved right after getting a mild shock, moving his hand close to the key in the aftermath of the experiment – as he’d previously deduced, lightning had given both the Leyden jar and the key a negative charge.
KITE FLIGHT Even if you haven’t managed to find a lovely young Mary Poppins to your Bert, or Bert to your Poppins as the case may be, you can still make your own magnificent flying machine. It may cost you a touch more than ‘tuppence for paper and strings’, but you can still have good oldfashioned fun! After all, as Mr Banks puts it… ‘You can have your own set of wings With your feet on the ground You’re a bird in a flight With your fist holding tight To the string of your kite! And why not… ‘send it soaring Up through the atmosphere Up where the air is clear’ Sounds fun to us!

CHEERS! TO THE BEERS
WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
GET A BREW ON!
Pull up a stool in the Tavern of Mayhem!, take a well-earned pint and join us in a drunken stumble with the resident brewer as we debate the finer points of beer!
PREHISTORIC PINTS Ale and beer are among the oldest fermented drinks in the world - stretching back to 9500 BC, when cereal was first farmed by early Neolithic man. Written records of brewing have been found in explorations of Ancient Egypt and Iraq, and there’s even the Alulu Beer Receipt, a carved tablet recording a purchase of ‘best’ beer from a brewer in the Sumerian city of Umma. It’s suggested that the cereals farmed in these cultures underwent what’s called spontaneous fermentation, due to wild yeasts found naturally in the air – perhaps the foundations of these great civilisations was sitting down with a drink or two and poring over the issues of the day just as we do in pubs to this day? ‘Praise Ninkasi!’ you may well be exclaiming. And you’d have good reason to – she was the ancient Sumerian goddess of beer, created to ‘satisfy the desire’ and ‘sate the heart’ of many a drinker. There’s even a surviving devotional poem to her, titled A Hymn To Ninkasi, which is in reality an early, and extraordinarily, precise recipe for brewing her sweet boozy nectar. We bet you can’t sing it after a few pints, though! 28 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
THE BRITISH BOOZER Beer reached our shores with Celtic and Germanic tribes who paid a visit in 3000 BC, and from then on it exploded in popularity. And the massed hordes would be proud of the legacy they left us. Pubs are full to bursting these days with a massive variety of beers from around the world, leaving you with quite a choice to make as you attempt to quench your thirst, even if your liver may not thank you for it in the morning. But it would almost be rude not to try the astounding variety of drink on offer. As well as the standard pint, there’s a whole universe of flavoured alternatives, light ale, cask ale, ciders…it’s like winning the golden ticket! To advertise in Mayhem! GET A BREW ON!
SMALL BEER Brewing has been around as long as there’s been a source of beer – and all you need is water, barley, yeast, and hops. And with the rise of the microbrewery, almost anyone can make their own sweet pints, just as it was before the big commercial breweries came into vogue. The Brewers Guild came into being in 1342, though it wasn’t until the 1970s and the advent of CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) interest in a return to more traditional methods that the ‘brewpub’ returned to public consciousness, inspired in part thanks to renowned beer reviewer Michael Jackson’s (no, not that one) World Guide To Beer (1977). Should you want to try doing so at home, you can. Legal restrictions on home brewing in this country were swept aside in 1963, and you can brew as much as you like as long as it’s guzzled in home comfort, though if it’s intended for sale you must pay alcohol duty and registration with HM Customs. Something of a home-brew Holy Grail can be found at Brew UK – www.brewuk.co.uk so get cracking!

Our quest to bring great brewing, matched with great locally sourced seasonal food is now on offer at The White Swan in Guildhall Walk. We are so committed to great beer, that we actually brew our own beer on site!
SOZZLED IN STYLE According to Jacko’s weighty tome, the flavour of a beer can come from the type and amount of malt used, taste from the yeast, and strength of bitterness as measured on the International Bitterness Units scale. Why not test it out by trying one of a wide variety of different tonsil-testers, from delicious plum beer or other fruity textures as embraced in Belgium and Holland (learn how to play them at their own game at www.beerrecipes.org), to a cheeky chocolate hit to wet your whistle, which you’ll also find after poring over the amazing bevy of beers on offer at the same site. Should a Friday or Saturday night sortie to Wetherspoons see you fail in your quest, you could always try local beer festivals (see www.shantscamra.org.uk/beerfestivals for further details), and don’t forget to pick up their yearly Good Beer Guide, a Bible for seasoned boozehounds! And with that, we’re afraid, we must ask our team of Oompa-Loompas to declare ‘last orders’, chums! But don’t be a stranger, get home safe and come again soon!

ANYONE FOR PIMMS? The South Coast Proms are back and bigger and better than ever before. This will be the third time that the stunning location of HMS Excellent on Whale Island has been opened to the public for the two day musical extravaganza. The event will be taking place during the evenings of Friday 5th and Saturday 6th July and from 5pm on each of the two nights, you will have the unique opportunity to picnic in the grounds of HMS Excellent and enjoy breathtaking entertainment. There will be music to suit all tastes culminating in a spectacular musical firework finale and an exciting aerobatic display by the Royal Navy Historical Flight prior to the start of the main concert. The 100 musicians who make up the Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will take centre stage, fresh from their sell out concert series at the Royal Albert Hall earlier in the year.
They will be joined on stage by the Portsmouth Military Wives Choir and the accomplished Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson who will perform selected pieces from her number one selling album Dusk and Dawn. Amy recently visited the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth for a photo shoot with members of the Royal Marines Band Service and said: “I grew up around ships and the sound of the sea and it is one of the most inspiring locations to perform. I can’t wait to perform at this year’s South Coast Proms and help raise funds for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. Captain Steve Green, one of the event organisers added: “Amy is an amazing musician and the bands are very much looking forward to performing with her. We are delighted that she now tops the classical album charts and it should prove a timely boost to the proms concerts which feature a wide variety of music played by top-class military musicians
Tickets are available from the website or via the ticket office with all proceeds going to The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. Ticket info: £10.00–£25.00. For all ticket options see the website‌ www.southcoastproms.com Ticket Bookings: 023 9231 2007

THE
GREAT PRETENDER A MAYHEM! EXCLUSIVE
MAYHEM! MEETS…
“I feel like I want to do something as good as what Taking on the iconic role of Jay Gatsby in all my heroes this summer’s lavish production, Leonardo DiCaprio proves no role is beyond his talents… have done…” Leonardo DiCaprio’s career comprises so many out and out successes that it’s hard to imagine a better choice for the role of Jay Gatsby, a part originally played by another Hollywood golden boy, Robert Redford, and now being brought back to life in Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic, The Great Gatsby. Since its publication in 1925, The Great Gatsby has gradually become accepted as both a work of literary genius and arguably the finest example of 20th Century American literature. Its eponymous hero, Jay Gatsby, stood as a contradictory symbol of everything glorious and craven about the “American Dream”. Yet he’s also a classically tragic figure – a man dragged down by hubris, a casualty of his indulgence in the reckless and unreflective pursuit of wealth and idolatry. The role is about as glamorous as they come and DiCaprio redefines the role with a combustible mixture of charm and intensity. Indeed it could become his defining role. “The Great Gatsby defines America in the 1920s,” he says. “At the centre is this mysterious existential character. The more you explore that book the more questions you ask about the character and the mystery about Gatsby – it’s an incredible honour to play the part. We can identify with this dreamer who in a new America envisioned himself in a certain way and sought to build a great life. We all have a little Gatsby in ourselves.”
Having first read the novel in junior high school, DiCaprio finds his impressions of the character have changed somewhat, and he has a greater understanding of the story’s sadder side. “I suppose it’s from having lived more myself, because now I see the tragedy of the man and the sadness of Gatsby,” he says. “He believed in the ‘American Dream’ and he worked his way up from his meagre background in the American Midwest and became fabulously wealthy. But he’s trying to recreate the past, because he’s held onto this vision of a life with Daisy [his cousin, played by Carey Mulligan] and so he’s dedicated himself to recapturing her but in some ways she’s an illusion.” “He’s trapped in the past to a certain extent in his memory of a lost love who was unattainable at the time because she belonged to a different class structure. Even when he has her in his arms, it seems like he’s still looking for something more, that she’s not going to make him whole or feel good about himself. She may not be the ultimate thing he’s looking for. There’s something still missing.” For an actor who has played so many outstanding roles in diverse movies from Inception to The Departed, Catch Me If You Can to Gangs of New York and Django Unchained, did he feel the pressure of taking on such an iconic figure of American literature? “There was pressure and a heightened sense of responsibility,” he reveals. “You can’t take any scene lightly. People have analysed and studied the novel and

everyone has their own interpretation of the novel and of Gatsby. So with every take and every scene we all felt a tremendous obligation to live up to the expectations that the public will have of our making this movie. I was even very conscious of Gatsby’s smile because there were references to that in the novel.” The themes of the book – and movie – will resonate with audiences because they are still relevant today, DiCaprio says. “Fitzgerald’s novel is a foreshadowing of the coming financial crash and Great Depression by talking about the decadence and recklessness of the Twenties and how people were living very lavish lifestyles while others were still mired in poverty. Those themes are very relevant to the current era and how these cycles repeat themselves.” The actor’s own motivations are somewhat less decadent than Gatsby’s. “I feel like I want to do something as good as what all my heroes have done,” he smiles.
“As an actor, I do everything possible to tell a great story in a truly artistic way… My goal is to keep doing great work. I haven’t stopped yet and hopefully the work will never stop. I will always have that drive to not only produce great work, but also to make a difference in the world.” JUNE 2013 | MAYHEM!

TESTING TESTING, ONE TWO THREE…
TEST CARD SPECIAL
WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
Slumping in front of the telly after a hard day – a simple pleasure, right? And we’ve been able to watch in colour since 2nd July 1967, when BBC Two was first able to take advantage of a full palette and show the viewer the world as it really was rather than in monochrome black and white.
THIS IS A TEST The first Test Card was broadcast in 1936, the idea having been conceived as an easy way to test and fix any sound/visual problems with the new medium of television. Very few people owned a set of their own, so any friends or neighbours who found themselves in good enough fortune to soon had their front rooms invaded! And if your machine went on the blink, the engineer sent out to fix it would have had a simple ‘line and circle’ diagram to play around with, which would also appear before any programmes were due to start and then again at the end of a day’s transmissions. Around 10 years later, in 1947, a more advanced version referred to as Test Card A appeared, with more refinements being made as the gogglebox’s capabilities increased. 34 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
Amazingly, it wasn’t a 24-hour channel until 1997 – but what filled the dead air? The answer lies with the Test Card, which made its début the day after those iconic first colour images…why not watch with Mayhem!, flop on the couch and let that odd-sounding electronic Muzak wash over you!
Almost inevitably, though, when talk turns to such matters, the one almost everybody remembers is that which first appeared the day after those first colour pictures went out, or Test Card F as the BBC knew it. If we were to tell you it featured a little girl playing noughts and crosses with a clown doll (strange choice of opponent, but never mind, eh?) referred to as ‘Bubbles’, against a background of colour test signals, you’d probably know what we were on about, right?
IN THE CARDS The architect of this odd image was BBC engineer George Hersee, whose then eight-year old daughter Carole, now a costume designer, is the little girl at the centre of it all. She was paid £100 for her time, and her likeness was subsequently used for several more cards, surviving even today as Test Card X, designed for the Beeb’s
HD channel. It can be viewed every two hours on the channel’s preview slot (though why you’d want to is anyone’s guess). Even its sound proved influential – Welsh post-punkers Young Marble Giants released their ambient six-track ‘Test Card’ EP in 1981, inspired by the audiovisual memories of founders Philip and Stuart Moxham. Listen to the likes of Sporting Life and you’ll probably end up wondering why it isn’t used as filler! Indeed if you’d like some alternative interludes between programmes, or something to while away the time until your set’s finally fixed, it can be found as part of the reissue package for their 1980 maiden outing Colossal Youth. So, as our transmission ends, what finer parting words than those of Derek McCulloch on Children’s Hour – ‘Goodnight children, everywhere?’

2 WHEEL FUN!
SADDLE UP AND
CYCLE Bike Week, the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, takes place between 15–23 June. Offering something for everyone; from families, schools and companies, to seasoned cyclists and those who have never cycled before, it is an annual opportunity to promote cycling and to show how easy it is to become part of everyday life, by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone.’
In 2012, almost half a million people took part, joining in events and taking part in the celebrations of cycling across the UK. This year, Bike Week is asking the nation to dig out their bikes, get back on the saddle and fall in love with cycling all over again. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this is for fun, as a means of getting around to the local shops, school, and work or just to visit friends. It’s a great opportunity for everyday cyclists to rethink their everyday journeys, explore different routes to take and to get out and enjoy those surroundings that are usually passed 42 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
by; cycling after all is the most convenient way to get around. Going out for the night? Save that taxi fare and cycle to your destination, it’s a great way of getting home – just mind your heels in the pedals or your trouser hems in the chain. Cycling is a great way to explore your local community and Bike Week focuses on encouraging families to taking up cycling as a regular activity: it is the time to ‘live local and get cycling.’ Free to enter and open to everyone – take a solo trip, take part in an event or even organise one yourself, you don’t have to be an experienced cyclist. Inspired by the triumphs of cycling hero Bradley Wiggins many more people are returning to their
childhood form of transport. It’s quick, it’s cheap and above all, it doesn’t keep you waiting in queues – most cities are now investing in cycle routes. Worried about how you might look? Not everyone dresses in lycra and the return to classic frames may offer you a slower pace to travel and you don’t have to arrive in a sweat, as well as offering a new fashion accessory. Bradley Wiggins is the epitome of cool both on and off the saddle, so why not join him and get back on a bike? Strap on a helmet, hitch up those skirts and start freewheeling along the seafront. You can always stop off for a 99 or two! For more information, visit: www.bikeweek.org.uk.

READY FOR THE REAL WORLD!
Because at whatever stage you are in your undergrad life, it will, soon enough, rear up on you, jaws agape, daring you to leave your cosseted student life and walk into post-grad life and a career. For all of you that this applies to therefore, here are a few tips on how to prepare for that time...
GET AN INTERNSHIP On the job, relevant training and experience in your chosen area of work. Yes, it’s usually unpaid and yes, you may have to run about doing the photocopying and making coffee for the irritating 19 year old that you’re reporting to, but it’s invaluable. Graduates with relevant work experience are sticky honey to the demanding bees of the corporate hive – being able to talk about your relevant experience will give you a distinct advantage.
GET FEEDBACK ON YOUR CV Your CV is your first chance to impress a potential employer so it’s critical that you make it as professional as possible. Good quality white paper (and don’t head it ‘Curriculum Vitae’ – they tend to know that already!) and relevant information about you and your experience and expertise. Those two pieces (maximum) of paper need to mark you out as exceptional, set you apart and identify you as the person for that job. So make use of anyone you know who has ‘seen a few’ and tap into their knowledge, get some advice and feedback on yours.
NAIL YOUR COVER LETTER It’s pointless having a good CV without a surface to air missile of a cover letter to go with it. It should grab the attention of the reader and make them want to drop everything and hire you – NOW! They’re the spark that ignites the fire of your
CV and makes them both irresistible. Tailor it to the company and role you are applying to – showing the people that matter that you have done some research is a big plus point, even so, be brief and to the point – one side is plenty enough for a good, nay, great cover letter.
JOIN LINKEDIN Social networking for professionals. It’s not about posting photos of yourself naked or telling everyone that you just lurrrve X-Factor, but about posting your professional details, abilities and aspirations, as well as your CV, for thousands of other business professionals to see and for you to make contacts as a result. Invaluable. Visit uk.linkedin. com/ for more information.
SET UP A NEW EMAIL ACCOUNT Don’t go sending McLaren or The Body Shop et al your CV on an email address that invites them to reply to sexyhotchick@hotmail.com or mrbigboy@yahoo.com. They won’t find it quirky, funny or endearing, indeed, they’ll probably find it very childish and throw it, and your chances, away. Set yourself up a new email address with a provider like Gmail and make it a combination of your first and last name. Simple, classic and professional.
GO PRIVATE ON FACEBOOK! No, you don’t have to quit Facebook. But bear this in mind, potential and actual employers trawl sites like Facebook and Twitter, or even Google,
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
looking for any signs of, shall we say, unusual behaviour or habits from their own or intended. So, make sure you change your privacy settings so that only your mates can see the photo of you by your prize marijuana plant or you mooning at the old ladies at the bus stop – and give yourself at least some chance of getting an interview – or keeping your job!
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT Get used to two interview questions. The first “tell us about yourself” – just be genuine and honest, they’ll soon find out if you’re not. The second is “what do you want to be doing in five years time?”. When this question is asked of you, never-ever answer, “...be sitting in your chair”. Seriously. It isn’t funny, isn’t original and they’ve heard it a thousand times before. No, make sure you really know what you want and outline that to them. Describe the role you want and how you see yourself in it, how you’d develop it and yourself and where you’d like it to take you within their business. Be clear, concise, apply your skills and, above all, be passionate. If you can see yourself in it, then there’s a good chance they will as well.
FINALLY... Remember the old saying ‘getting a job is a job in itself’. So make like a scout and be prepared! Update your CV regularly, tailor your applications and do your research. Treat every stage of every application with the utmost respect and give it your absolute best – as a bare minimum. And good luck! JUNE 2013 | MAYHEM!

BACK OF THE NET!
FOR GOALPOSTS!
After a hard day’s work crafting your beloved Mayhem!, there’s nothing we like more than embracing the sunshine and racing off to the park for a kickabout! But what you may not know is that the Football Association (FA), the beautiful game’s governing body, marks its Agreed and published by 1848, they 150th birthday this year – were adopted around the country – setting in stone elements which we so let’s split into teams, accept as part and parcel of games kick off and go back to 1863.
RULES ARE RULES In an age before wall to wall coverage of the game (think Sky Sports televising at least a game a night and the Saturday evening ritual of Match Of The Day), hard as it may seem to believe there was no standard set of rules for footy, and indeed this can still be the case if the mates you meet up with to boot a ball about a bit aren’t averse to cheating in their bids to recreate the wonder-goals they see on the terraces or telly. To an extent, the public schools of the 18th Century were to blame for the confusion as each played to its own set of rules. All very well until Eton or Harrow’s best players went off to uni, you say – which is where the Cambridge Rules enter the fray. Now who says students are good for nothing scroungers, eh? 46 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
today, for example the free kick awarded for fouls by players on either side, and even the muchmaligned referee to officiate matches in the first place (a fact worth keeping in mind next time you make a run to the front of the stand at Fratton Park to hurl abuse at the man in black).
IN LEAGUE WITH COBB MORLEY The man to thank for modern football’s organisational state is Ebeneezer Cobb Morley. While captaining his local club, Mortlake, he wrote to the Bell’s Life newspaper outlining his vision for order amid the muddy and bruised chaos of English football’s early years – which led to the meeting of eleven founder clubs in the Freemasons Tavern in London and the formation of the FA, with Ebeneezer elected as its first secretary, no doubt anxious to dispel the myth that he was a bit of a Scrooge while he was at it.
Anyone who’s despaired at the effects of his Laws Of The Game, which are obeyed to the letter at matches around the world, may be forgiven for uttering a quick ‘humbug!’ or something stronger. But without his innovations, would we put ourselves through 90 minutes a week of agony and ecstasy? And what else would we do on a Saturday afternoon? Such things don’t bear thinking about, we think you’ll agree! Bearing that in mind, why not lace up your boots, pack some kit and a mix-tape of classic football chants and take a trip to the National Football Museum in Manchester (www.nationalfootballmuseum.com)? Just don’t stage an impromptu game of Knockout Wembley after you get there, as a last piece of advice before the final whistle.

GO TRAVELLING! Three months to dart through the well-trodden spine of South-East Asia, taking in the delights of Angkor Wat or the insanity of Thailand’s beach parties. Or maybe a year traversing through South America, discovering lost tribes, steaming rainforests and vast cities. Travelling is in one breath life changing and completely terrifying but the experiences and memories gained can last a lifetime. Get past the time spent away from family or, if travelling solo, the initial pangs of loneliness and you could be well set to have the time of your life. It takes a huge amount of sacrifice to save the money to make it attainable, but the amount will naturally depend on what you want from your adventure.
VOLUNTEERING If travelling all seems a bit self-indulgent and not enough about adding something to the world, then you may consider volunteering as the perfect alternative. From teaching English in Cambodia, helping distribute medical supplies in Guatemala or working in an orphanage in Ghana, there are a staggering number of opportunities out there. Of course volunteering doesn’t necessarily mean leaving the UK, but if you are looking for the chance to push your boundaries then volunteering abroad could be the thing you need to re-evaluate your life. 48 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
A CHANGE OF CAREER A gap year, for all of its potential to offer experiences and fulfil lifelong ambitions, may also be the time you need to take a career break. A fractured economy and lack of prospects may lead you to think otherwise, but in some respects there has never been a better time to take the plunge. Further education courses are plentiful and relatively cheap and cover an abundance of subjects. Although financially the prospect of changing career may seem daunting, the benefits both personally and also to your career could be huge. That lifetime ambition to become a photographer may not be out of your reach yet! Do amazing things from travelling to volunteering to changing your career, a gap year has infinite possibilities. Not everyone is in the position to take one, but in the end it can come down to one thing; would your life be better if you took the plunge? What better way to reconnect with yourself than to spend a whole year doing amazing things. Walk from Lands End to John O’Groats, serve hot meals to the homeless, spend a month painting the Hampshire countryside. The opportunities are huge. The advantages limitless. To advertise in Mayhem! NICK HEWER… Born in Swindon in 1944, Hewer began working in public relations in the mid-1960s and headed up his own PR company until its sale in 1997. Amstrad, Lord Sugar’s best known corporate monster, ‘hired’ Hewer’s firm Michael Joyce Consultants back in 1983 and the pair have worked together ever since, forming a solid friendship. Nick postponed early retirement to the south of France on the request of Sugar, who asked for his help in negotiating with the producers of The Apprentice when the show was being discussed in 2004. Hewer landed one of the roles of Sugar’s aides on the show, alongside Margaret Mountford, who recently stepped aside for Karren Brady. He has been an ever-present, ever-watching tour de force, keeping a beady eye on the 123 candidates who have appeared across eight series. Loved and respected by the great British public, Hewer says he is full of admiration for the candidates who have appeared on the show. “When all is said and done, we love the candidates and we are immensely proud of them,” he says. “There have been a host of great contestants on The Apprentice over the years. Some names that spring to mind include Saira Khan, who has become a good friend of mine; and Gabrielle Omar too, from last year, who is a lovely, honest, open character and a fantastic architect.” “Could I have been an apprentice at the age of 25? Not a chance,” continues Hewer. “I would have been terrified. They are putting all their cards on the table, so to speak, early in their careers, and it’s a tough process to go through.” With series nine of The Apprentice off the marks, Hewer admits he urged candidates to “be prepared, determined and ready for a fight” in order to succeed. “My golden rule for anyone going on the show is ‘tell the truth’,” he adds. “There is nothing worse than being found out to be a liar.” Aside from The Apprentice, Hewer is continuing to flourish in his role as presenter of Channel 4’s Countdown, something he has done since January 2012. “What I love is the fantastical following it has, and not just amongst old people as might be generalised,” he says. “There are all sorts of demographics who watch the show religiously, from school children to students and upwards. The fan base for the programme is quite incredible. You’d be surprised at the number of viewers who won’t go away on holiday unless they’re assured that they can get to a TV set mid-afternoon!”
“It’s a British institution having been going for 30 years, and I’m so honoured to be a part of it.”

WADE IN THE WATER…
SAY IT LOUD I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD
Thanks to an initiative launched by the then US President Jimmy Carter on 7th June 1979, we can – though he named it ‘Black Music Month’, a certain Mr Obama has re-branded it as ‘African-American’, but no matter what you call it it’s a tune we can all dance to, so get your jazz hands ready and take a pew with the Reverend Mayhem! as we practice what we preach (tunefully, of course).
SPIRIT IN THE SKY Wait a while before you squeeze into your glad-rags and prepare to get on down because our story begins with slaves imported to the States from Africa fashioning what came to be known at the time as ‘Negro spirituals’ – songs of faith and hope to get them through their struggles on the plantations, combining the traditions of their native religion with that which was forced upon them by their masters, often inspired by the Bible or existing hymns, putting across Christian ideals while also reflecting on the harsh toil of a life without liberty. 52 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2013
If James Brown, the self-proclaimed Godfather Of Soul, can say it (and he did), why can’t everybody, black or white, celebrate the rich cultural legacy of African American music in all its forms?
And legend has it that some actually contained coded instruction on how to throw off your shackles and make your way to freedom! Wade In The Water, for example, as first published in 1901 (though almost inevitably much older than that), is an often quoted example, the implication being that the best route to freedom was a suitably watery one, inspired by the Israelite escape from Egypt in Biblical times. “For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.” quickly evolved at least in part into:‘ Wade in the water. Wade in the water, children. Wade in the water. God’s gonna trouble the water.’ All of which leads nicely into the next phase. Get ready to ‘praise de Lawd!’ as some gospel preachers (actually most of them) would have it.
TAKE IT AS GOSPEL While all of this was going on, the seeds of gospel music were beginning to take root. Secret worship meetings away from the prying eyes of their masters enabling the oppressed to incorporate more traditionally African elements into proceedings, including supposed spiritual possession and the ‘call and response’ dialogue between pastor and congregation – elements which survive to this day to varying degrees in rhythm and blues, soul, funk and other modern manifestations of the music of African America. Just listen to the likes of the Edwin Hawkins Singers on Oh Happy Day as just one example, to hear and feel the sensation for yourself, or pay a visit to the Gospel Music Association, which has around 4,000 members around the world (www.gospelmusic.org).

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Suzi Dent, Cancer Research UK’s Events Manager for Portsmouth, said: “Come on ladies, please play your part by entering Race for Life in Portsmouth today. Together, we can hit cancer where it hurts!” “There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all. It’s fighting talk, and we mean every word we say. Cancer, Portsmouth is coming to get you.” Last year, 7,444 women took part in Race for Life in Portsmouth and

raised a fantastic £424,129 This year, organisers need 7800 women and girls to stride out to help raise £480,000 for vital research. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the South East. Suzi continues: “Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and levels of fitness will take part in Race for Life. They come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it. ”
Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.” “Don’t be fooled by the tutus and tiaras. Portsmouth Race for Life is cancer’s worst nightmare.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research but with help from the people of Portsmouth, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. ”
“We are very grateful to everyone who takes part in Race for Life in Portsmouth and thanks to them Cancer Research UK is able to make progress against many forms of the disease. But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2013 and bring new recruits with them.”
“Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.
