HUG MONTH
WRITTEN BY VANESHA PEACH
FREE HUG ANYONE?
A SYMBOL OF HOPE Feeling depressed or lonely and wishing that you had more hugs during the day to keep you going in the face of adversity? Had enough of smile emoticons online and yearning for a real embrace and a few words of comfort when the going gets tough? Well the good old hug is still something we welcome and look forward to when we are thrown in the somewhat dark abyss of modern life, so let’s get cuddled up and find out more about International Free Hugs Month!
CELEBRATE HUG MONTH We are encouraged to hug and cuddle as much as we want for Hug Month: International Free Hugs Month is celebrated on the first Saturday of July and continues until 1st August. Lovers should of course embrace each other with gusto and passion until, erm, they are blue in the face. For other people, however, hugs are given to make each other feel better, to show that one cares and that the other person is significant and is loved, as a human connection between two human beings.
COLD DIGITAL WORLD One may argue that it’s a cold digital world out there. Ironically enough, the internet and mobile technology can subtly disconnect us from our circle of friends and lead to an imminent sense of isolation in today’s society. Instead of spending time in person with friends, we just call, text or instant message them. In doing so, we are robbing ourselves of the comfort element which accompanies face-to-face interaction and maybe denying ourselves that all-important sense of well-being, whether it’s with friends or friendly cashiers at the checkout.
A HEARTWARMING EXPERIENCE We need to cuddle, hug and kiss in order to experience that wholesome feeling of being important and of being wanted. Online experiences can only complement what’s more important: the human touch. We need a hug to warm our hearts.
FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN Interestingly enough, free hugs are also part of a social movement which started in Australia in 2004 and which is now internationally popular. Hugs are given in public places to make a complete stranger feel like a king! To find out more about the Free Hugs movement, please go to: www.freehugscampaign.org. 8

DUVET DAY!
I QUITE LIKE EATING IN BED No. Stop right now. Apart from being thoroughly unhygienic it’s hardly going to help you sleep. Our minds need to be trained to accept that our bed means either one of those two things. Sleep or sex. If it gets used to the idea that we can eat there as well, then that’s just making things more complicated. That’s why you shouldn’t have a TV in the bedroom. And as for curling up under the duvet with your laptop…horrors! Don’t blame Mayhem! if you can’t sleep.
JUST SLEEP THEN? Sleep experts will always tell you that one of the best ways to beat insomnia is to make the bedroom a place that our body associates with sleep. So keep the room clean, bright and airy. And invest in a good bed with a proper mattress. And get quality sheets and duvets. It’s an investment but one that will be worth it. Lots of people have sleep issues simply because their beds are uncomfortable.
L VE YOUR WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE
AND SEX!
BED! A wise woman once sidled up to Mayhem! and offered these words of wisdom as regards your bed – that it should be used for two things and two things only. Sleep and sex. Nothing else…ever. So if you are abusing your bed, read on. It’s time to give it some love. Mayhem! slips back the duvet and finds out more. 10 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Absolutely, yes. A cool, clean, comfortable bed with cotton sheets and a quality duvet. How cosy, how intimate, how damned sexy is that? Plus, you get to sleep afterwards. Hopefully in each other’s arms, yes gents, the ladies do like to cuddle afterwards. So make an effort to do so rather than asking how good you were before putting on Match of the Day.
LOVE YOUR BED? COME ON, IT’S JUST A BED! Au contraire. It’s so much more than that. After all, we use our bed more than any other item of furniture that we will buy – and we spend up to 40% of our lives sleeping. That means the thing that we do the most in the item of furniture that we will use the most. In our entire lives. That makes beds pretty important don’t you think?
THE SLEEP COUNCIL No, they’re not a tacky Paul Weller tribute band. The Sleep Council can offer help and advice on how to create a near perfect environment for you to sleep in, which means it’ll be rather good for sex as well, which is a bonus! So take your bed seriously. Visit sleepcouncil.org.uk for more details.

FISHING
FOR SOMETHING TO DO? WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
MAN’S ORIGINAL BEST FRIEND Fishing is one of the oldest life skills/ sports known to man, with records of it spanning across 40,000 years (at least since the beginning of the Palaeolithic period in prehistory). Analysis of the diet of ‘Taiyuan Man’ (a human skeleton from the time found in eastern Asia), suggests that he and his kin’s diet was high in fish, with cave paintings and the remains of discarded fish bones and shells evidence of the great importance placed on seafood, even this early on in human evolution. As early man lived in hunter-gatherer societies, it’s tempting to imagine that even then they were more than up for taking communal fishing trips, though sadly no ‘Gone Fishin’ stone tablets have ever been found in the course of research! Classical civilisations like the Ancient Greeks and Romans placed great emphasis on seafood in their dining cultures, though the fishermen who brought it in were afforded a relatively low social status. That’s gratitude, eh?
A FISHY FABLE
Ever gazed out over the sea or a lake and wondered what you could do to feel closer to the briney deep? Or just feel like whipping a rod out without getting arrested for it? There’s something that can solve both urges in one hit – the simple sport of fishing! And as it’s National Fishing Month from 19th July – 26th August, hop in our boat, choose your rod and grab a beer as we head out in search of the citizens of the watery realm... 12 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Before we set off, time to consult our book of fishy folklore! Perhaps the best known is solunar theory (‘sol’ for the sun, and ‘lunar’ for the moon), posited by John Alden Knight in 1926 – a simple principle which even the earliest fishermen from long before Knight’s time were said to follow. It states that fish move about during the day based on their positions in relation to the sun, moon, and tides – which probably sounds like a degree thesis from the University of the Blindingly Obvious, and doesn’t bother most who just want to pack their fishing box and tackle into a boat with some friends and have a laugh and a few drinks in the great outdoors. Whether you’re a veteran of many such sessions or looking to try it for the first time, either solo or with family and friends, everyone’s welcome to reel in the good times! Cast your net towards www.nationalfishingmonth.com to reel in hints, tips, and events close to you – don’t be cast aside! To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

OLIVER A MAYHEM! EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS BY DAVID LOFTUS
STEPPING BACK FROM THE HEAT!
Following an amazing fun-filled, sun-soaked weekend in 2012, The Big Feastival will be back with a bang in 2013! Firstly Jamie, the royal birth is coming up soon. Everyone is excited about it. Now you have some experience with babies... Absolutely amazing news. Such a lot of love and excitement for William and Kate and of course when it comes to weaning the baby, I’m more than happy to come down and do my work on your five veg a day and a bit of pureeing and I’ve had my fair bit of experience. So any help needed, I’m there. For Daddy tips, can William call you? Yeah, I’m a Ninja at doing nappies!. With four kids you have to do a bit of everything, so if I can be of any service to the royal family, I’m there. Whether it’s cooking, bottles, temperature control, burping, patting on the back and all that sort of business, yeah, I’m all over it so I can be an agony aunt if you want. Why don’t you just give them my number? Let’s talk the Big Feastival – it’s back for its third year? Yes, it started in Clapham. Then we did Alex James’ farm last year and we’re back again because last year went so well. It was mobbed. It was a great atmosphere. We know there’s loads of choice in festivals but we just want to concentrate on food and music and keeping the kids happy so the parents can have a really good laugh.
A unique two-day celebration of music, food and fun for all the family, The Big Feastival will return to Blur bassist Alex James’ idyllic Cotswolds farm on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. Here Jamie Oliver talks about what festival goers can expect from this year’s extravaganza plus reveals the line-up for the event that provides food and music for all the family. The celebrity chef also talks about his excitement over the impending royal birth and offers his services to William and Kate if they need any baby advice. The dad-of-four also reveals what we can expect from his new book and upcoming TV projects plus what he thought of Simon Cowell moving into the TV cooking show market with ‘Food Glorious Food’....
He doesn’t mind you returning? No, we looked after his land. We were good, he wanted us back. He loved it! I’ve never seen Alex like it. He had no shoes on all weekend. We were lucky, the weather was amazing. It was just brilliant seeing so many people camping and the atmosphere was completely different to Clapham. We’ve got some great acts this year… KT Tunstall, Basement Jaxx, The Rizzle Kicks, The Cuban Brothers who make me laugh more than anything! Loads of chefs, myself, Gennaro Contaldo, Gizzi Erskine, a whole bunch of wonderful artists and brilliant chefs doing demos all day, every day for the weekend which is really, really cool and of course there’s just food, food and more food everywhere. It just seems the perfect combination. food and music. Do you, the family, the kids all camp there? I’m there. The kids are going to be there. The wife’s going to be there. We did it last year. Loved it! We just wanted to create a really nice event with nice stuff, nice food, nice drinks, good vibe, good music, you know, everyone’s kind of into food, they really are, so the demos go down really well. Ultimately, I think it’s for people that want to have a quality do. You know there’s definitely festivals you want to go to and

get lairy, but this is just really pleasant and lovely and that’s what we’re after! Mark Owen is now performing as well. That’s got to be a good one? I know Mark well so we’re excited to have him and I think it will be a great response. Everyone’s responded really well to it. I don’t know what he’s got in store for us but he was very good back in the day and of course with Take That so, yeah. See if we can get Gary up. Maybe we can bring back half of Take That! You’re busy with so many different projects – where do you find the time to do all this?! Well, I struggle with time like anyone else. I think doing a little bit often, you know, since ‘School Dinners’ or setting up Fifteen, 10 years ago now, which was the beginning of looking at how we treat young people and social issues. At Fifteen our students often come from colourful backgrounds and how you give them inspiration to go on and be employed. Ever since then and ‘School Dinners’, you know, when you start these things you’ve got to keep doing them and when you keep doing them, it just sort of snowballs. I have a very mixed job, you know, from the kitchen, to writing the books, to the TV, to the campaigns, to being a dad, you know – there’s a lot of balls in the air. SUMMER 2013 | MAYHEM!

STEPPING BACK FROM THE HEAT! I like the idea that the public’s got like 10 recipes up their sleeve which don’t cost much, that are really quick, that are really delicious, that isn’t necessarily going to kill them 11 years earlier. So, this book’s called ‘Save’ and the average price of a recipe per person is a couple of quid. Some of the meals are for a quid, a quid fifty and these are proper, I mean absolutely flavour and deliciousness first, price second. I think at the end of the day, you don’t have to have cheap food that apologises and is miserable, so I’ve had to work hard for it, be clever, but that’s what my job is, to do all the hard work for the public.
You’ve got a new book coming at end of the year, can you tell us about that? It’s based on all the people coming to Jamieoliver.com and telling us what they want. Amazing delicious food that doesn’t cost the world. So I’ve just written a cookbook that I’m really proud of. We worked really hard; every single recipe in the book is way cheaper than a take-away and that for me that was the level playing field. With the last four, five years and the recession, the one business that’s done really, really well in tough times is fast food. You know, the junk food industry has gone through the roof and they’re loving it and that basically comes back to the food revolution, you know, when you haven’t got time or money, our default position is go for a take-away. I’ve got nothing against take-aways per se, of course I’ve got a few issues with certain things but even that’s improving a little bit.
Any news on another TV Series? We’ve got two things starting this year. We’ve got the second season of ‘Food Fight Club’ which we’re kind of slightly re-working and that again is a big celebration of food. Doing that with my buddy Jimmy [Doherty] who is obviously a farmer and a doctor and we can kind of look at food in an interesting way and that will be really exciting towards the end of year. Then, of course to go with the book we’ve got ‘Save’ which is essentially my guide, top tips, hints and tips, top 10, top 20, top 30 things that you need to know about saving cash and being thrifty and not wasting as much. We’ve had an interesting year where the country has been obsessed with baking and cakes, Mary Berry doing her thing. Now even Simon Cowell has tried it recently with ‘food glorious food’. Any thoughts on what he did with his show? Any rivalry there? Oh no rivalry at all. I think Simon does a great job. I think it’s really
WIN
good. It’s nice to see Mary Berry back in the spotlight, she’s always been a lovely lady and it’s nice to get the girls up there in prime-time and there’s something about baking I think, that unifies everyone. I mean, yeah they’re naughty and nice but the effort and time and the dedication to having something that’s a real treat and it’s so easy to go and buy a box of already done stuff. Me and the family, we do sit down, kids love it, there’s the competition element but also you see people from all walks of life kind of getting among it, I don’t really look at it as competition. I think what I do is so erratic, you know, you go from ‘School Dinners’ one second to ‘15 Minute Meals’. The next second I’m doing ‘The Italian Road Trip’ then off to America and doing ‘Food Revolution’ working in the most unhealthy town in America, you know, so... That was an incredible series. I just like the fact that it was only five years ago no one could get a cooking show away, there was nothing. Delia [Smith], Rick Stein, all the guys couldn’t get a single programme away and now there’s probably too much – but it always goes in cycles. Finally, any more updates on the situation between you and Mr Gove, you’ve not been too happy with him in the past. Any conversations? You know what, we are just waiting for some exciting news. I’m subtly urged that there’s going to be some good announcements coming this way and good announcements to me means more focus on the standards of food and teaching kids how to cook. That’s what I would love it to be.

HEAT THINGS UP!
CUTTING THE
MUSTARD WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE
Mustard. Yellow. Hot. Good with sausages. That’s pretty much your thoughts on the matter, right? Well think on. Not only does it have its very own special day, it also has a museum. That’s right… a museum…about mustard! Mayhem! takes off the lid on the jar and peers inside.
MUSTARD. YOU ARE KIDDING ME? Sir, Mayhem! never kids. We’re being serious here. Mustard has been accompanying meals since Roman times – there’s even a recipe for it in a famous 4th Century cookbook. It’s a culinary survivor and, as such, deserves some respect.
OK, BUT A MUSTARD MUSEUM? COME ON! It’s in Norwich, home of one of the world’s most famous mustard brands, Colemans. They’ve been making fine quality mustards in Norfolk for nearly 200 years now and, rightly, feel this tradition should be celebrated. Their Mustard Shop and Museum is one of the city’s most popular and cherished heritage attractions, and this is in a City which has two Cathedrals and an ancient Castle! 20 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
BUT IT’S ONLY GOOD WITH BARBECUES! Jamie Oliver doesn’t think so. Among his more popular recipes are Mustard Chicken, Mustard Mash, Mustard Lamb and a Mustard Dressing – need I go on? It’s a fantastic ingredient which adds something to so many different meals, the thought that it’s only real use is as a half used blob on the cardboard plate you’ve piled your burnt barbecue offerings on, is really quite a reprehensible one!
IT’S QUITE VERSATILE THEN? Oh yes. Mustard is even a great natural alternative to using conventional medicines for example. Ancient history shows that mustard seed, when ground into a powder and mixed with lime juice, made a drink to provide an effective – and gentle – remedy for bacterial infections, sexually transmitted diseases and menstrual pains. A mix of powdered mustard seed and honey is known to provide relief for wounds and burns while chewing mustard seed regularly was a known, and well championed, remedy against typhoid and the fever caused by malaria.
NOT SO HELPFUL IF IT’S MUSTARD GAS THOUGH Sorry but you can’t offer that as an argument against mustard! Despite the name and similar psychological effects, the chemical weapon known as mustard gas is not made from mustard. The name comes from the fact that it occasionally smells like mustard and is sometimes a yellow/ brown colour, which has, and does, make people think it’s made of mustard, but it isn’t.
A BIT UNDERRATED THEN? Not by its aficionados – it’s probably just you not realising what a popular addition to cooking it is. As either a cream or seed, mustard is used in the cuisine of India, the Mediterranean, Northern and South Eastern Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa, easily making it one of the most popular and widely used spices and condiments in the world. So take another look at mustard – it might just surprise you!

HOW TO GET IT?
BE REALISTIC Unfortunately, rejection is a common theme when you’re applying for work experience. Try not to expect floods of offers and don’t be too disheartened if no placements arise – some places are more welcoming than others. TACKLING BAD BREATH!
UP YOUR ROUTINE Brushing twice daily isn’t always enough to avoid bad breath: the bacteria that cause odours to form in the mouth are also found on the tongue or between teeth. Make sure to floss at least every three days and brush your tongue as well as your teeth. It’s worth investing in toothbrushes with tongue scrapers and floss sticks for this. Use an alcohol-free mouthwash twice daily to round off your routine.
WRITTEN BY JAMES BUTLER
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER Consuming plenty of water helps to combat dry mouth, the main cause of ‘morning breath’, and returns your mouth to a neutral pH. This is also important after your oral hygiene routine, in order to clean away any remaining food debris that was loosened in the process. Drinking after meals can also wash away any lingering food particles. Beware sugary drinks however, they are a buffet for the bacteria that cause bad breath.
CHEW SOMETHING FOR A QUICK FIX
OPEN WIDE What spells disaster for a date before it has even
begun, and leaves many people mint-popping wrecks at the mere whisper of it? That’s right: bad breath. This 6th of August is National Fresh Breath Day, so read on to grab some handy tips and avoid any garlicky setbacks at the office or on that first date. 24 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Chewing gum can not only mask bad smells with its own more preferable scent, it stimulates saliva production which has antibacterial qualities. Choose a xylitol-based gum for even more advantages, such as protection against cavities. If you would prefer a natural remedy, chewing fresh mint, basil, coriander or parsley releases scented oils while carrying their own health benefits.
CHECK YOUR DIET Often what you eat is the main cause of bad breath. Other than onion and garlic, the regular offenders include meat and poultry, largely because particles manage to stick around after the last mouthful. A poor diet, lacking in fruit and vegetables, will also do you no favours. Eating fruits packed in Vitamin C such as melons, berries and oranges creates a harmful environment for oral bacteria, and fibrous fruit and veg like celery and apples help to dislodge troublesome food lingering between your teeth. DANCE WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
THROUGH THE MISTS OF TIME It’s summertime, and the time is right for dancing in the streets – to quote Martha and The Vandellas. Luckily for us, we’ve managed to find ourselves a patented Jackson Five Dancing Machine, a time vessel so funky its existence was kept a secret until this very moment. While most people knew it only as an album track from their 1973 release G.I.T – Get It Together, secret Jackson family papers reveal that Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon, Michael and Tito also began work on the device – which they hoped to use to steal the dance moves of the past and future in an attempt to make themselves overlords of the dance, ruling the funk forever more. But having liberated it, and worked out its activation code (simply whistling the opening to Dancing Machine), we invite you to join us in pondering the mysteries of the moonwalk, among other floor-fillers! 26 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013

SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER!
START THE DANCE
It’s suggested that dance originated among early humans as part of ‘battle trance’ – a state of consciousness designed to foster a collective spirit and banish fear of attacking predators or other threats. A little further on down the evolutionary track, archaeological expeditions to Egypt and India found pictorial evidence for grooving in the ancient world in the form of paintings in both the 9000 – year old Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in the Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh and tomb murals in the Egyptian sands dating from around 3300BC. As culture changed, it seems dance began to be used to help tell stories, commonly myths and legends, and to declare romantic feelings towards one another before the coming of the written word – a sign that the more things change, the more they stay the same, possibly! In some cultures it’s also said to have served a medicinal purpose, instilling a state of ecstatic trance during healing rituals – these live on even today in the tribal cultures of Africa and South America.
BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE
And to an extent, all those needs are met in popular dance today. Ask anyone who’s been on holiday to Ibiza and sampled the delights of a Ministry Of Sound club, or indeed been to any nightclub looking to find a man or woman to while away the evening with, and you’ll find that a few drinks will most likely have helped them use dance to declare their lusty intent across a floorful of people flailing away while Calvin Harris or Major Lazer pounds from the speakers. You won’t find this sort of thing covered in any Dance Studies lectures, either, to our knowledge, whether spread across dance practice, critical theory or choreography, though most colleges and universities offer such courses within their Performing Arts departments. If you fancy stretching your brain cells and going back even further to contemplate the Friday/Saturday night rituals of our ancestors then ethnomusicology or ‘Music Archaeology’ is the path for you. To go for a more ‘cultured’ option, you could tread the road well-worn by generations of little girls (willingly or otherwise, we don’t know) and try ballet lessons. It originated in 15th Century Renaissance Italy, quickly spreading to France, Russia, and much of the rest of Europe, which was no doubt envious of the Ballets Russes and the Bolshoi Ballet – and you could be part of that cultural legacy. Just take a look at Blighty’s own Royal Ballet School (www.royal-ballet-school.org.uk) and seize your chance to take a dance!

LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF
Beach by day and party by night, no one wants the hassle of worrying about spotty or greasy skin on their long-awaited holiday. Make-up is a no-no if you’re in and out of the pool, the sea or want to get your tan on, so here’s how to keep your skin fresh this summer. WRITTEN BY NICOLA WEBB
DRINK UP (WATER, NOT BEER) This is actually a lot harder than it sounds, but drinking at least a litre of water a day can make a huge difference to your skin. Spots and pimples clear up quicker, your skin will glow and you’ll actually feel a lot better too. Try drinking nothing but water for around two weeks before the holiday and the difference will be a pleasant surprise.
GET SOME MORE ZZZZZZ’S Now this one really can’t be much of a challenge. Sleeping more – which yes, may mean early nights – can do wonders to skin that looks a bit grey and those eye bags. Around eight hours of solid sleep is ideal for most people and in fact, too much sleep can actually do you more harm than good. Not only will you look brighter, but you’re energy levels and mood will be positive too.
EAT HEALTHILY
FRESH, FABULOUS
SUMMER
SKIN 28 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
We know fruit and vegetables are nowhere near as appealing as that chinese takeaway or chocolate bar, but adding in some of it here and there will really help inject some colour into your face. Try drinking smoothies during the day, adding some fruit with breakfast or swap that packet of crisps for some healthy carrot sticks and ta-dah…happy skin.
KEEP IT CLEAN A big no-no with skin, especially on your face, is dirt. Touching your face during the day and using make-up easily blocks the pores, making spots more likely. Use a gentle face wash every morning and night to open and clean the pores and get rid of any daily dirt. Avoid using salt or any strong face wash such as tea-tree-oil as these tend to dry the skin out and leave your face with an uncomfortable just-botoxed sensation. To advertise in Mayhem! LOOKING AFTER YOUR PLANET!
WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED? It’s possible to recycle many parts of an IT system, particularly monitors, PCs and servers. Computer peripherals, such as printers and scanners, can also be recycled, as can land-line and mobile telephones. However, some elements of an IT system may need particular expertise to recycle, with PCs, for example, tending to have heavy metals in their circuit boards.
WHAT ABOUT SENSITIVE DATA ON HARD DRIVES?
WRITTEN BY ALYSON WATTS
The 1998 Data Protection Act makes it a legal requirement for most businesses that deal with sensitive data to keep it backed up and secure.
RECYCLE BEFORE YOU REBOOT As we update our electrical products faster than ever, have you ever wondered what happens to the ever increasing amounts of electrical products we dispose of in the UK? Latest figures show that we dispose of something in excess of a million tonnes per year!
Since August 2005, new EU legislation has changed the way in which this type of equipment is disposed of. Items containing hazardous materials must first be sent to treatment plants to have the hazardous waste removed. The remaining parts such as plastics, metals and glass are all recycled and banned from landfill.
SO WHAT HAPPENS TO IT?
WHY RECYCLE COMPUTER EQUIPMENT?
Historically, up until 2005, most of this equipment would have been placed in landfill sites across the country and buried. TV’s and computers containing lead, fluorescent tubes containing mercury and other items brimming with hazardous waste were just buried and forgotten. 38 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Recycling reduces the volume of waste which ends up in landfill sites, or gets dumped illegally. It cuts down on the amount of raw materials needed for the manufacture of new products and it also means more efficient and convenient recycling for the end user.
So, organisations are urged to have a healthy and secure data strategy, and this may include using good encryption and security technology to protect the relevant data. It also includes disposing of it in an adequate and thorough way if the computer equipment is passed on. But be warned that reformatting the hard drive is not sufficient to permanently destroy all data. Seek professional advice on how to dispose of data properly, to make sure those credit card and private details don’t end up on eBay.
RECYCLE SAFELY, YET WISELY! So, if you’re thinking of purchasing a new computer and need to dispose of your old one, why not consider recycling with Spinnaker Waste Management? All data on your hard drive will be removed and the machine completely refurbished to be used by some one else. If it doesn’t work you can rest assured that it will be carefully dismantled and recycled in an environmentally sound manner, here in Portsmouth.

SAFEGUARDING YOUR FUTURE!
WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE
WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE? Same applies. If after your death, your family is entitled to compensation, a death-in service payment, or an insurance pay-out and you don’t make a will, this too could all go to your blood relatives. In the case of a home that is jointly owned, it may need to be sold so that a share of the assets can pass from the deceased to the next of kin. If you’re unmarried and have no living relatives, your entire estate will pass to the taxman. Your partner may not even have a say in your funeral arrangements.
WHERE THERE’S A WILL I’M MARRIED BUT
THERE’S A WAY
WE SPLIT UP, WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
Make a Will? Me? But I’m young, fit, about to take on the world. I’m indestructible! No, not for me mate, no need for that. Come back when I’m 70...
If you are separated but not yet divorced from a previous partner, they will inherit the bulk of your estate and your new partner will get nothing.
As Mayhem! will attempt to explain, such an attitude may not be all that wise when it comes to making a will.
WHAT ABOUT MY CHILDREN?
OF COURSE THEY WILL, I’VE ALWAYS WHY DO IT NOW? I’M FAR TOO YOUNG! SAID THEY WOULD! But of course. Death is not on the immediate horizon or in your plans – not for a good few decades at least. But think on. You readily ‘buy’ insurance to protect you against unforeseen happenings. So why aren’t you doing the same with regard to your death? Remember, your house may never be flooded and you may never write off your car. But you will die one day. Cast iron guarantee.
NO NEED FOR IT – IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME... I know, I know…your partner will ‘get everything’. Well hang on in there. If you do happen to unexpectedly shake off this mortal coil, it’s by no means certain that they will – especially if you’re not married. 42 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Doesn’t mean a thing I’m afraid. Many people assume that when they die, all their belongings would automatically go to their loved ones, but this is not necessarily the case. If you die before making a will and you’re not married to your partner (or formed a civil partnership), your partner will not automatically inherit anything from you. No matter how long you have been together or how committed you are, the law dictates that everything will go to your nearest blood relative. This is known as ‘dying intestate’.
THAT WOULD BE MY PARENTS! Yes. They’d get the lot. And if they didn’t want to pass any of it on to your partner then they don’t have to. Your partner would have to take court action to get anything.
If you have children (and you’re not married, or are divorced) the whole estate will be divided between your children. Now that sounds alright at first – but, again, your partner would get nothing. The children would own any savings, your personal belongings, and possibly even the home. Your partner would face the choice of fighting them for a share of your estate in court, or get nothing.
OK, I’M CONVINCED. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE? Make an appointment with any solicitor who deals in making wills. They’ll break down all the jargon for you and help you to make an easy process. Costs vary – but a simple will may only cost around £100. And remember…if you die without making a will the law decides who gets what.

Battles with peritonitis and tuberculosis meaning he spent much of his early life in hospital and remained functionally illiterate up to the age of eight (though this was rectified by some years of private tuition). Moving into adult years, he tried his hand at what most would call ‘normal’ employment, including a spell with British Rail, but appeared unmotivated and quickly devoted his life to music, which had most likely been the one bright spot in his early life on the wards. Having learned to play the drums, he co-founded his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, in 1957 – about as far from the Beatles as it’s possible to get, you might think!
WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
Skiffle gave way to rock and roll the following year, though, and by the dawn of the 60s Ringo had packed his drum-kit and joined up with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, who had a following on the Liverpool music scene as well as picking up gigs around the country – alongside jaunts to Germany to play in Hamburg at venues including the Star-Club, the Indra and the Kaiserkeller, venues he would later revisit with John, Paul and George in tow.
A STARR
TURN We all have our favourite Beatle, right? Something about that Fab Four touches the hearts, as well as ears, of generations of listeners around the world. But while most would plump for John or Paul, we at Mayhem! think it’s unfair that George and Ringo are often relegated to the roles of mere sidemen in the story of Liverpool and indeed, England’s, greatest musical export. But we’re putting that right by throwing a bit of a birthday do for the iconic sticksman Starr, who turns 73 on 7th July and continues to rock well past pensionable age with his solo career and work with the All-Starr band in full swing. Join us in the Octopus’s Garden as we don our Beatle wigs, turn on, tune in and drop out! 44 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
BEST BITTER Having seen him play with the Hurricanes both in Liverpool and Hamburg, the Beatles knew who to call following the sacking of Pete Best, and Ringo took his drum-stool in August 1962 to a less than warm welcome from their local fans. But he quickly won them over, slotting with ease into the band dynamic in time to play on their maiden studio album, Please Please Me (1963). Something of a tradition began on the follow-up, with The Beatles, later that same year, as Ringo got a shot at a lead vocal on the single I Wanna Be Your Man, setting the stage for later Starr-sung classics, Yellow Submarine, Don’t Pass Me By and What Goes On, just three. Following the messy break-up of the band in 1970, he made a solo début with Sentimental Journey, an album of old-time standards, following it up by indulging his love of country and western with Beaucoups Of Blues, even finding time to play with his old band-mates on a clutch of their own releases before the All-Starr Band came into being in 1989, a revolving group containing line-ups of friends and fellow rockers, 12 different incarnations having toured up to last year and notable alumnis including everyone from Ginger Baker to Greg Lake. All of which makes a mockery of Lennon’s claim that ‘he’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles’ when asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world, legions of kit-bashers no doubt having learned from the master – why not give it a go yourself? INTERVIEW BY WILLIAM DAVIES & FELICITY TIDBURY
MAYHEM! MEETS…
Three years after breaking through with her self-titled debut album, Eliza Doolittle makes her long-awaited return with the release of her new single ‘Big when I was little’. Mayhem! catch up before the summer kicks into action to find out more! It’s been a while since we heard from you, what have you been up to? Yes! Well, I spent about a year and a half touring the last album and then another year and a half writing this new one. You toured with Paloma Faith a few years back. How was it? That was really fun! Our bands were all friends so it was a really good tour. Muso’s everywhere, lots of good times back stage. I was really impressed with Paloma as she had built her stage set herself. Given your family’s background, was it inevitable that you’d end up in showbiz? Hmmmm, not really, cos I have eight other brothers and sisters and they all do different things. But it definitely rubbed off on me. Seeing my Mum on stage and seeing my Dad directing plays and musicals showed me that it wasn’t out of reach, and that I could be creative for a living. Doolittle isn’t your real surname? How did it come about? Was it taken from the My Fair Lady character? My drama teacher in my primary school used to call me Eliza Doolittle, no doubt because of My Fair Lady. My real surname is a difficult one to pronounce and spell so I kept hold of the Doolittle. With a surname like Doolittle, I guess I should also ask if you like animals? YEAH! I’m a cat queen. I’m thinking about getting a new kitten but I’m worried since I’m going to be travelling a lot again, I’m probably not the best pet owner right now. Congrats on the success of your single ‘You and Me’. How did you come to work with Disclosure? Ah thank you! It was one of those things that came together really
naturally, we’re both a fan of each others music and decided to try a day in the studio. They had the track and I wrote the top line on top and it was all done in a day. Good fun! I’m actually a massive garage girl at heart and I could write those songs for days. Absolutely loved it! The track’s vibe is quite a departure from your earlier tracks such as ‘Pack Up’. What can we expect from your next album? I definitely go in another direction, back to my roots more really. It’s definitely been inspired by things I grew up on. Soundwise yes, it’s definitely moving and growing and song wise too. For me, it’s about writing great songs. And on this new record I spill my mind and heart out all over the place! How did it feel getting your debut album into the top 40 and for it to also receive a platinum award? Amazing! You always hope for the best but, I don’t ever have any expectations so suddenly seeing that other people are hearing your music can blow your brains out. You’re hitting the festival scene this summer. Who are you most excited about seeing at the festivals? I’m doing a few festivals with Disclosure. I get to do Glastonbury with them so I’m excited about seeing The Rolling Stones live! I also have Solange, James Blake, and Nas on my list. Do you get to go and see other acts, or are you stuck in a van for most of it? I think I’ll be able to explore and have a proper experience for Glastonbury. I think it’s important to go and see music and not feel like it’s work, sometimes you forget what it’s all about!
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
What’s your most memorable moment of your career so far? There’s been so many great moments, but I hope that the most memorable hasn’t even happened yet. I yearn for more ! You’ve featured in singles with a number of other artists. If you could perform with any artist past or present who would it be and why? Well, any…Michael Jackson! Realsitically Andre 3000 moves me. I’d love to make music with him. Where do you believe life would have taken you if you hadn’t become a singer? Definitely a taxi driver. Directions are my secret talent. You’ve done a bit of modelling in the past. How have you found modelling so far and what are your hopes for the future? I’ve only ever posed in pictures as myself, a musician. But yeah, if somebody wants me to represent them and I like what they do, I’m happy to collaborate! What advice would you give to those who want to progress in their own singing careers? It’s all about fulfilling yourself, truly. Do it for the right reasons, for the love of music. If you’re doing what you truly love, there’s no stopping you! What are your future plans in singing and performing? Well, the album is out in October, I cannot wait for you to hear it! It’s been everything to me this last year and a half, writing it. So it’s gonna be so great to get it out to your actual ears and even better to perform for you live. I’ll see you soon no doubt! Look out for Elizas new album ‘Big when I was little’, out on 28th July. SUMMER 2013 | MAYHEM!

NOW PLEASURE!
WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY
A MUSICAL JOURNEY BACK IN TIME!
THAT’S WHAT WE CALL A GUILTY
As a cure for the summertime blues, the guilty pleasure of pop music cheesier than a wedge of Stilton has to be one of the most satisfying and easily available – plus, it’s legal! The track-listings may be eclectic but isn’t that why so many love the ‘Now’ compilations, celebrating their 30th year as something of a popular music icon? That, or the opportunity to sample a year’s worth of chart hits over two discs without too much of a dent in your wallet... one way to ‘Get Lucky’, as Daft Punk would have it, though taking a leaf from their book and wearing a robot helmet to hide your true identity as you queue for your pop purchase is optional!
POP PICKERS The first volume in the series hit the shelves in 1983, ‘Now – That’s what I call Music!’ tipping its (stylish) hat to the likes of Culture Club (Karma Chameleon), The Cure (The Love Cats) and Duran Duran (Is There Something I Should Know?) and, err, Men At Work (Down Under). No accounting for taste, we suppose, but they give it a good go year on year! It was the result of a brainwave at Virgin Records. General manager, Jon Webster, and Stephen Navin, head of licensing/business affairs, take the credit for the basic idea, and managing director, Simon Draper, approved the duo to present their concept to Peter Jamieson of EMI 48 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Records, who heartily approved the idea, and a partnership with Virgin was born, continuing to release a new ‘Now’ every year since, much to the delight of listening ears and dancing feet around the world.
THIS LITTLE PIGGY GOES TO MARKETING Thinking outside the box, the name of the series came from a vintage Danish bacon poster given to Draper as a jokey gift by his cousin (and Virgin boss) Richard Branson. Wired for sound, the design features a pig listening to a chicken crowing ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’ as a morning wake-up call, and the pig would become the series mascot in its early years up until Now 5, having perhaps been turned to bacon by those listeners already sick of what passed for chart music! No less important is the job of compiler for the series, a Herculean task no doubt requiring hours of listening to the official radio charts and nerves of steel to deal with the inevitable flood of letters from people demanding to know why their particular favourite was left off the pedestal of pop.
Signing off with last year’s Now 81, Ashley Abram of Box Music handed control to Jenny Fisher in a passing of the torch – now we want to know if you think you’ve got what it takes to help us compile Now That’s What I Call Mayhem! Send in your suggestions as to who we should be listening out for – however cheesy – we promise we won’t laugh, much!

ASHES TO ASHES
Is there a more English sound than the whack of bat on ball during a game of cricket? Join us in Mayhem! Cricket Club changing rooms and slip on your whites as we prepare ourselves for this year’s Ashes series against Australia (starting on 10th July). This is swiftly followed by a one-day international series (with one being played at Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl) and two Twenty20 matches against our Australian cousins! Howzat!
OUT OF THE ASHES
TEST MATCH SPECIAL
The first tournament was played in 1882/3, spurred by a newspaper report on Australia’s first win over our boys on English soil at the Oval – the Sporting Times presumably crying into its beer as it wrote a mock obituary for English cricket as a whole, and sowing the seeds by stating that ‘the body will be cremated, and the ashes taken to Australia’.
Pleasingly, England are the current holders of the most famous urn in the world, having won both previous series’. The tournament is played every two years, with England and Australia taking turns to play host. Overall though, the Aussies hold supremacy, with a whopping 31 wins, and the run and wicket records held by Donald Bradman (5,028) and Shane Warne (195) respectively.
An England tour to the ‘Baggy Greens’ back yard (so called thanks to their distinctive playing caps) was then dubbed ‘the quest to regain The Ashes’, with England’s captain, Ivo Bligh, presented with a small urn by a group of women from Melbourne in a surreal moment.
A series of different county grounds serve as venues for the five Test matches which make up the series, this year’s venues confirmed as Trent Bridge, Lord’s, Old Trafford, Durham and the Oval. The one-dayer at the Ageas Bowl will get under way on 16th September, following the main series and a preceding match with New Zealand at the same venue (part of the Black Caps English tour) on 2nd June, the tantalising prospect of a summer of cricket enough to have us dashing off to set a game in motion, Test Match Special on the office radio and everyone humming Green Onions, its iconic theme tune, Booker T and The MG’S doing the honours as we pray that rain won’t stop play.
And what was in the urn? According to urban legend, the burned remains of a bail (the stick placed atop three stumps to make a wicket) – hence the name of the trophy presented to the winning side, though it’s only a replica of the original, Bligh having always considered the original a (macabre) personal gift, now on display at the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) Museum at Lord’s. 50 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013

I WANT TO RIDE MY BICYCLE!
VIVE LE
CYCLING! But mais non! If you’re serious about cycling, you’ll probably already know that this year’s Tour De France gets under way on 29th June – with this marking the 100th Tour (the first one way back in 1903) and Chris Froome looking to place one higher than 2012, there’ll be plenty to look out for... Join us on our own Tour De Mayhem! as we get set for the all-important race from the office to the pub, and tell you more about this most famous of bicycle races (save for the Queen one from their 1978 album Jazz, of course) – all together now! Bi-cycle, Bi-cycle, Bi-cycle…
I WANT TO RIDE LE BICYCLE, I WANT TO RIDE LE BIKE Years before Freddie Mercury and the lads were singing about their commute to the studio, the Tour De France was dreamt up as an extreme sales pitch for French cycling magazine L’Auto (now part of France’s top sports newspaper L’Equipe), taking in multiple stages across the length and breadth of the country and making the event akin to something like an extreme cycling holiday. 52 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Most people probably think of their humble bike as nothing more than a means of getting from A to B, a simple prop in the race to get to work on time, no visions of Sir Chris Hoy-ish feats of speed as they only just make it to the office for a 9am start, having left it a little late.
Its first winner was Maurice Garin, riding for La Francaise team while sporting a fine moustache into the bargain, rejoicing in the nickname Le Petit Ramoneur (the Little Chimney-Sweep). It’s not actually recorded whether he actually offered this service in between races but if the nickname is even a little true, Maurice deserves respect for literally getting on his bike and finding work!
BICYCLE RACES ARE COMING YOUR WAY! The modern Tour is one of the three big events in the cycling world, alongside the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, and competing for that big photo finish on the Champs-Elysée after passing through both the Pyrenees and Alps is a gruelling challenge for the likes of Mark Cavendish to ponder as they, no doubt, try to resist the temptation to stop and take a few photos as they ride past all that lovely scenery. But they’d stop at their peril – 23 days to cover 21 stages is quite a stretch, with between 20 and 22 teams of nine riders each looking to get their
sweaty mitts on the coveted Yellow Jersey, speed is the watchword. With aggregate times from across all stages of the race added up to determine who snatches the win, the overall goal is to achieve the lowest possible clock-bothering score as you whizz past everyone else, easier said than done. If you want some idea of the excitement that goes into the event without just sitting in front of the telly (ITV have done the honours in broadcast coverage in recent years), why not get on your own trusty two-wheeled steed, with noted cyclemaniacs and electronic music innovators Kraftwerk’s Tour De France Soundtracks (2003) album whirring away on your iPod? Founder (and sole original) member Ralf Hutter is mad for it, and introduced it to his band-mates as a form of exercise during the recording of their 1978 magnum opus The Man-Machine – a further urban myth circulating that during concert tours the bus would drop Ralfie off 100 miles from each venue – that’s dedication, and should provide all the incentive you need to put pedal to the, err, kerb!

BEAM ME UP!
S C I E LOVE THE CHARACTERS
Science fiction is hugely popular worldwide. Current major films are masterpieces of science fiction. However, for all novices attempting to read their first work of science fiction, a few tips on how to read it might be the ultimate magic wand to a new world of make believe. 54 MAYHEM! | SUMMER 2013
Although set in the near or distant future, science fiction characters are portrayed as human beings with flaws, weaknesses, strengths and ambitions. They have a human heart and the story always depicts a human problem/issue/conflict, which needs to be given a human solution. Love, anger, the conflict between right and wrong, ambition and jealousy are all present within our characters. We don’t need to distance ourselves from those ‘creatures’ and pretend that we can’t understand them. We always will, if the story is well-written, and we will fall in love with our heroes. Some human traits are universal. After all, Simon Morden, science fiction writer, defines a good science fiction story as: “a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, that would not have happened at all without its science content.”
IMAGINE THE TECHNOLOGY AS PART OF EVERYDAY LIFE We will witness fantastic advances in science and technology as part and parcel of everyday life in our science fiction novel. This might prove to be a hurdle for our timid reader, who will gulp and choke at the mention of such a different world. However, our characters talk about teleportation and flying cars in the present mode and, of course, take it for granted. If we do our homework and immerse ourselves in this new and unknown world without flinching, we’ll soon be at ease and talk and read about all those ‘wonders’ without batting an eyelid. Remember that the submarine was once fantasy in Jules Verne’s novel!

FICTION WRITTEN BY VANESHA PEACH
SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF Our biggest task, when reading science fiction is, therefore, to be able to delve into a possible future and ask ourselves the question ‘what if’? Science fiction stories explore the possibility of time travel, genetic engineering, computers in people’s heads, teleportation, alien contact and other burning issues. We will come across landscapes which we can’t accept or social fabrics which seem totally meaningless. However, if we discard the novel, scream and throw a tantrum about the total ‘stupidity’ it’s all about and state that we can’t possibly believe in that invented world, we do lose a very important battle. Science fiction demands that we suspend our disbelief and willingly take in the new logic of a created universe in another time, possibly another space.
THE FUTURE AS IMAGINED BY US NOW Yet the future thus depicted is not all elusive and other-worldly. The writer has given life to a world which might exist sometime, somewhere. Simon Morden, in a talk given at Greenbelt 2006, highlights that science fiction has sought to warn people about current social trends by extrapolating them into a plausible future. The future we see in our precious novels might happen. Robert Heinlein, classic science fiction writer, describes science fiction as: “realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present”. The writer is thus using his knowledge of the world as we know it to speculate about the future. As readers, we are stimulated to have a rethink about our own physical and mental realm.
Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SCIENCE FICTION Although the list is not extensive, it’s worthwhile highlighting a few of the best types of science fiction currently loved by readers all over the world: Alternate history (a change on a point of history) – check out P K Dick, Man in the High Castle; almost all Harry Turtledove; Kim Stanley Robinson, The Years of Rice and Salt. Cyberpunk (about high-tech low-life) – famous writers are: Neal Stephenson, Charlie Stross, William Gibson and Pat Cadigan. Military Science Fiction or soldiers in space – best known writers are: Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers; Joe Haldeman’s, The Forever War; Orson Scott Card’s, Ender’s Game. Post-apocalypse – Nevil Shute’s On the Beach; Philip Reeve’s, Mortal Engines; John Wyndham’s, Day of the Triffids and The Chrysalids. SUMMER 2013 | MAYHEM!
