But skim past these usual offenders and a wealth of wacky news stories are waiting to be gawped at. Here at Mayhem!, we have sifted through the column inches to deliver a round-up of the weirdest stories the press has to offer, so make a cup of tea, put your feet up, and read the news, but not as you know it.

A Chinese zoo has been left red-faced as their attempt to disguise a dog as a lion has circulated online. According to one customer, the illusion was broken when the ‘lion’, which was really a Tibetan Mastiff, started to bark in its enclosure.

Other misleading exhibits in the People’s Park of Luohe Zoo were a white fox in a leopard’s den and another dog in a wolf pen. Hopefully it was at least a husky.

‘worMiNg’ Craze sweePs JaPaN Every couple has their own way of expressing how they feel about each other: a cuddle, a kiss, holding hands (or rubbing noses, if you’re an Inuit). But in the latest craze to hit Japan, young couples have taken to LICKING EACH OTHERS EYEBALLS to demonstrate their affection.

Don’t try this at home kids: while eye-ball licking may seem a reasonably safe, if worrying, practice, conjunctivitis and cold sores could be the consequence if your partner has a dirty mouth.

Cat has owN book sigNiNg Move over Bagpuss and Garfield, there is a new famous cat in town.

Thanks to a collection of viral memes, Tardar Sauce (or Grumpy Cat as she is better known) has become an overnight celebrity – to the extent that her infamous frown has been published in book form. Tardar was at LA book signing recently, where fans could get a paw print in their copy or even take a photo of their own.

Cabbie PM It’s an innovative way to get to know what voters think, and it’s certainly more hands on than cold-calling. While on the campaign trail for the Norway general elections, the country’s Prime Minister }Jens Stoltenberg became a taxi driver for a day to get an undercover view of what the public want. Although he wore an Oslo Taxi uniform, many of his customers easily saw through the disguise. Keep your eyes peeled: next time you get into a taxi it could be Dave Cameron handing you your change.

While the origins of this celebration are unknown, the benefits of reading are copious. But why do we enjoy reading? Where does the satisfaction come from when finishing a novel, and what motivates us to buy the next in the collection?

Any avid reader can explain that they can mentally simulate the narrative in a novel; they can picture the fictional world as they read. A study from Washington University has recently undertaken studies into how we interact with books. Nicole Speer, lead author of this study explains that: “These results suggest that readers use perceptual and motor representations in the process of comprehending narrated activity” So take, for example, a change in the characters’ locations (“they went through the front door into the kitchen”). This increases activity in parts of the brain 10 maYHem! | autumn 2013

(mainly the temporal lobes) that are activate when people visualise space related scenes.

Another way you could celebrate Read A Book Day is to recognise the hard work put in by all involved in the book making process. The author, the publishers, the editors and the publishing company all deserves their hard work gratified for bringing to life your favourite novel.

Reading is not just a recreational activity. It can create an emotional bond between parent and child, or bring together those who enjoy the shared experiences in book clubs. Reading can increase concentration, de-stress and ultimately provide the inspiration for those who want to pursue a career as an author.

He’s come a long way since early days as a Glasgow shipyard welder – Billy Connolly achieving remarkable global success through stand-up comedy, folk singing, and through a range of inspired film roles that capitalise on his talents. His Scots swagger, it seems, makes people laugh, and why not?

Connolly’s breakthrough fi lm role came in 1997 alongside Dame Judi Dench in the drama Mrs Brown, in which he played Queen Victoria’s favourite servant, John Brown.

The performance earned Connolly a BAFTA nomination. Parts in Hollywood blockbusters followed along with quirkier roles such as a tormented priest in the second X-Files movie and a pet zombie in the underrated Fido.

Now recently seen alongside an esteemed cast including Michael Gambon, Pauline Collins and Maggie Smith in Dustin Hoff man’s directorial debut, Quartet, and last summer lending his voice to one of the year’s biggest box office hits, Disney Pixar’s Brave, Connolly says he fi nally has faith in his acting career.

“I’m 70 now and I finally have confidence in my acting,” laughs The Big yin. “It’s literally taken this long!”

Clearly the multi-talented Connolly is in demand. Lately he’s been in New Zealand, shooting the next instalment in The Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation Of Smaug. He takes on the weighty role of dwarf warrior king, Dain Ironfoot, alongside another esteemed cast that includes Sir Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt and The Hobbit himself, Martin Freeman.

i’M ok, i’ve got 20:20 visioN That’s great. But don’t go overboard on it. It just means you’re the ‘standard’ as far as your sight is concerned.

The important thing is not that you have 20:20 vision – but that you keep it!

keeP your eyes healthy One thing sounds obvious – but as we all spend much of our time in front of a computer screen, TV, our mobiles, a tablet, whatever – it’s crucial that we give our eyes a rest now and again. Try the 20:20:20 rule – every 20 minutes look about 20 feet in front of you for about 20 seconds.

This little exercise can help reduce eye strain.

what about eye droPs? You don’t need to go splashing all manner of chemicals in your eyes unless it’s for a good reason. If your eyes are excessively dry or irritated for example, then drops might help, but that’s something your GP or optician can advise on.

Research has shown that the eyes can benefit from a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids – meaning salmon and tuna for example. In addition to that, the dark leafy greens like spinach and kale have also been shown to have beneficial effects with regard to keeping your eyes healthy.

Good point. Lots of sports can result in inadvertent eye injury. Racquet sports, golf, rugby and even swimming where the chance of eye infection from contaminated water can be very high. The South Africa cricket teams wicket keeper, Mark Boucher, had to quit the game last year after undergoing eye surgery after his eye was hit, believe it or not, by a flying ball.

Consider some sort of eye protection appropriate for your sport. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear as do some of the leading sportswear stores.

Think on. How about all this sunshine we’ve been having lately? Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Look good and be safe!

And remember, if you have any concerns or worries about your eyes or issues with your sight, the first port of call should always be your local GP.

The mayhem! team have spent much of the last two months glued to the rugby – keeping an eye on this year’s British Lions tour to australia, which produced a 2–1 series win, the first triumph over our antipodean brothers in scrum for a whopping 16 years!

tryiNg soMethiNg New The Lions tour happens every four years, with either Australia, South Africa or New Zealand as the destination. Seeds were sown as far back as 1888, with a representative side making the gruelling trip around the Southern Hemisphere without the support of any of the four Home Unions (English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Rugby Unions). Although they soon became more receptive to the idea and were fully behind it by the time a 1910 journey to South Africa had been booked.

Arrangements were arguably only formally ratified with the 1949 formation of a Tours Committee by the Four Unions, and every player selected for duty in the squad to tour New Zealand was a recognised international for his country. It was also a big year in the strip stakes, as those same players were the fi rst to wear the now iconic red shirt with the amalgamated ‘four nations’ crest, as sported by the likes of George North this time out.

It ended in a resounding 59–8 win for our lads and set them in good stead for a series of matches against the best teams of the Aussie leagues – Western Force, Queensland Reds, New South Wales Waratahs and Brumbies lining up against the Lions from 5th–18th June.

The serious business got going not long after as a 23–21 win on 22nd June ensured a great start, a late 16–15 defeat on the 29th ensuring tension was high ahead of the fi nal match – Gatland and his troops signing off with gusto in doling out a 41–16 pasting!

We’re all under pressure from family, work, finances and friends and it can all get too much at times.

Luckily, we know a few ways of getting ourselves chilled, relaxed and ready for the trials of the day.

Meditate Guess what? Meditating isn’t all about sitting cross legged and saying: “Ommmm” several thousand times.

Any repetitive action that you enjoy and which relaxes you can be regarded as a form of meditation.

This can include walking, swimming, reading – in fact any activity that calms you and keeps you ‘in the moment’.

visualisatioN It’s your mind – start to use it.

Visualising a favourite place, person or sight. It’s not difficult – after all, visualisation is just a posh word for ‘daydream’. Think how easily you used to be able to do that and learn to do it again!

breathe When we are tense or stressed out, our breathing becomes swift and shallow. Which isn’t good.

Learning to do steady, deep and relaxed breathing can make a huge difference. There are lots of breathing exercises out there that you can try, so see which one works best for you.

take it all iN When it’s safe to do so (not when you’re driving for example!) just stop.

Stop and take a long, deep, close look around you. Maybe focus on some birdsong or the passing clouds. Sitting near water and just observing that scene can be hugely relaxing. Find yourself that nice place, that relaxing sound or scene and lose yourself in it.

have a CuP of tea!

It’s almost a cliché isn’t it? Everything feels better with a nice hot cuppa!

Chamomile tea, for example, is a traditional favourite for calming the mind and reducing stress. Find a type that works with you and, when it all gets a bit much, sit down and have a brew.

self Massage If, for example, your neck and shoulders are tense, simply relax them by gently rubbing those tense areas. Find a way that’s relaxing and find the points that need a little attention. Same applies to your feet, give them a rub…it gets the circulation flowing.

take a tiMe out This may not be easy but, just as you think you’re going to lose it, freak out or have an attack of the screaming fits – step back, walk away, remove yourself from the situation.

Breathe, slowly and deeply, and focus on letting all that tension go. Don’t rush it. Time is always on your side.

Regard it as a friend, not an enemy.

the koek-y MoNster Did you know that the word ‘biscuit’ is derived from the Middle French term ‘bescuit’, which comes from Latin and means ‘twice-cooked’?

They were first baked and then dried out in an oven in a simple two-step baking process.

Not to be confused with our humble biscuit, the American ‘Cookie’ – as the word cookie goes back to the Dutch ‘Koek’, meaning ‘little cake’.

kiNg bisCuit tiMe When it comes to biscuits today, the first thing that comes to mind is their deliciousness – nice as a snack or for dessert, but you’d never have them as your main course! Back in the day, though, that’s exactly what biscuits were made for, as baked food was easier to transport than many other food items.

Consequently biscuits played an important role in the Royal Navy.

For preservation they were baked as hard as possible and, in time, weather conditions and climate changes would soften them. On occasions they would be dunked into coffee or other liquids – a proud tradition that survives today!

During the reign of Queen Victoria, biscuits would have been produced by machine, making them ready to be taken to sea. An important location for biscuit production at the time was our very own Gosport!

a bisCuit a day Back then, biscuits were made of just water, flour and salt and it was considered healthy to have a biscuit every day – though we’re not sure today’s dentists would agree. So, in celebration of September’s National Biscuit Month, crack open the biccies, get dunking and be thankful your teeth will most likely survive intact!

Returning for its second year, Tonic 2 is back with a line-up featuring some of the Uk’s most influential and iconic musicians.

Held to promote Recovery Through Music, the 14-hour music spectacular features Terry Hall (The Specials), Dub Pistols, Bruce Foxton (The Jam), Bonehead (Oasis) and Vinny Peculiar (Parlour Flames) and The Lambrettas.

With local DJ’s and artists playing in between, the day promises to inform, engage and entertain.

All the artists will be supporting Tonic Music for Mental Health – a new independent non-profit organisation that supports musicians with mental health problems with access to music. As well as promoting recovery and raising awareness, it hopes to challenge the stigma and discrimination often associated with mental health in the community.

Terry Hall will close the show with a two hour DJ set – expect an eclectic mix of various genres including ska, reggae, soul and personal favourites. As someone who has suffered from depression quite heavily for years, Hall appreciates the effects music can have.

He said; ‘It’s working for me as well. I’m an excellent advert for someone with acute manic depression, who can beat it.

Music and lithium – I find them very therapeutic.”

“I get a bit twitchy if I spend too long in one place”

You learned to play guitar at 13. Did you always know that music was what you wanted to do or were there other career paths you almost followed?

I pretty much switched straight from wanting to be Batman to wanting to do music. Still want to be Batman a little bit.

Who was your idol when you were younger?

Apart from the one I’ve already mentioned. I grew up on my parents’ record collection, so I was listening to everything from Joni Mitchel and Neil Young to Steppenwolf and ELO. It was a bit later on when I got into Eric Roche, Thomas Leeb and Nick Harper, the last two of which feature on the new album, which completely blows my tiny ginger mind.

You studied music in Guildford under the tuition of Eric Roche.

How big of an influence was he on your career and getting you to where you are today?

Huge, he not only effected my playing but my whole approach to music itself, he was a good friend. I feel very lucky our time there overlapped.

Who has given you the most support throughout your career?

My parents have always been amazing and I write with my brother and my sister’s my manager, so my whole family have been awesome.

Why did you choose red dreadlocks as part of your image?

It was a very long time ago and, to be honest, I can’t really remember. I started dreading my hair and playing guitar at around the same time so the two seem intrinsically linked.

You have been a solo artist for a long time now, but you started in a couple of bands. At what point did you feel you’d be better off as a solo artist?

I loved being in bands growing up and learned a huge amount about playing live, but I think it’s that the guitar playing style is so all encompassing, it gets a bit confusing if you add other things and suddenly it becomes very hard to work out what sounds are coming from where.

Whereas when it’s just me there, you can see exactly what’s going on.

How did it feel when Hand Built By Robots gained the success it did and had you ever believed it would happen when producing the album?

Not in the slightest, I don’t think anyone involved had any idea it would go on to do what it did. It was completely insane... still haven’t stopped for long enough to take in what happened there and now album four’s coming out!

Your second album is called Rebuilt

By Humans. What’s the link between this title and your wrist injury?

Just before I was due to start recording, I slipped on some ice and fractured my radius on my right wrist, which is bad. I didn’t realise quite how bad until I was on the news with the surgeon who fixed me and when asked how bad it was, he described it as “a career-ending injury” to which I responded, “WHAT!? This is not what you said at the time!”

You collaborated with many people for your third album Write It On Your Skin, which is something you didn’t do for the first two albums.

How did you experience going back to working on music with other people rather than being solo?

I’ve always written with other people, there’s a huge amount to be learnt from it. I’ve also always written with my brother increasingly over the years, and Studio Zoo is pretty much just the two of us, there’s only two co-written tracks outside of that. I love writing on my own but if I play something to him and he has really good ideas, it seems stupid to ignore him.

It’s been said that at gigs you ask the audience what they want you to play. How important is it to you to involve your fans in performances instead of just playing to them?

I enjoy involving the audience and fans in general in every part of the process. The other reason I play on my own and not with a band is that you can take a crowd, split it into three groups, add that to five parts I’m playing and you’ve an eight piece right there!

The new album, Studio Zoo, was made in a completely unique way as you were filmed live for the whole five weeks at your home. How did you feel about this feat?

Completely and utterly terrified... to begin with. After a few days it seemed like a completely natural way of working and it also had a hugely positive effect on the record itself.

is the best collection of songs I’ve put out. It has come considerably closer to capturing what it is I do live than anything I’ve ever done before.

I produced and engineered it myself, so I’ve had more control over the fi nal album than I’ve ever had in the past.

This one’s kind of pure me, if that makes any sense.

Do you feel that, in becoming so well known, you lost some of the positives of being a small time singer and musician??

I think my level of success is all positives, I’m making a good living and I can go to shops and maybe a few people stop and say hi, but they’re not chasing me down the road screaming.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’m just happy to be playing. I’ve been lucky enough to have played all over the place and it doesn’t matter whether it’s 10 people in a small bar in San Francisco or fi ft y five thousand people on the Isle of Wight – if I’m playing, I’m happy.

What has been your favourite moment in your career so far?

Making this album. It was such a massive learning curve and such a challenge, but so much freaking fun!

As you are seen as a folk/rock artist, how has folk music influenced your own work?

It’s had big impact, but I’m by no means a purist. I listen to all kinds of things. There are a lot of mindblowing acoustic guitarists in folk, so obviously that appealed to me.

What aspects of traditional folk music appeal to you?

There are so many types of traditional folk it depends how far back you go and where you go back to. Eric Roche was very influenced by traditional Irish folk music and some of that’s rubbed off on me. I listen to guitarists from all over the place and I think it’s almost impossible to play acoustic instruments and not be influenced by folk music in some way.

What advice can you give to others trying to make a career in music?

Enjoy it, there’s no point putting yourself through it if you don’t. Get as good live as you possibly can. Word of mouth is still the most powerful tool you have and all the online networking sites can serve as a tool to massively enhance that. Whether you’re playing to 15 or fi fteen thousand, if people love something they’re going to tell their friends, and their friends tell their friends. It’s an old school approach but it never stopped working.

Having finished Studio Zoo now, what are your plans for the future?

Gig it! Get back on road and see what people make of it live. I am in desperate need of a tour, I get a bit twitchy if I spend too long in one place.

After gaining so much success already, is it important to get another number one or would you rather concentrate on having fun and enjoying your music?

ReADy teddy Not so Cuddly Did you know that man’s best friend (sorry, dogs) is said to be named after US president Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt? In 1902, Roosevelt and his Presidential mates were on a hunt – towards the end of the day, they managed to track down a Black Bear, tied it to a tree and suggested Roosevelt should have the honour of fi nishing it off.

bear-faCed truth Roosevelt, being the gentleman that he was, refused to shoot the poor little animal as he thought it extremely unfair (so goes the official story, girls. In reality, he refused to shoot it himself, but said it should still be put out of its misery. Just pretend you didn’t read this). After his noble act (sniff ), the Washington Post published a cartoon which showed how Roosevelt refused to kill the bear.

If you didn’t have a teddy bear when you were younger, you never lived. end of story. People all over the world love the cute little stuffed animals because they have attended millions of tea parties, comforted thousands of scared children and are often kept sacred even when those kids have already grown up. and that’s exactly why 9th September has been declared National Teddy Bear Day!

a Morris MaJor Morris Michtom, a toymaker, saw the cartoon and designed a cute miniature bear that he called ‘Teddy’s bear’, and sat it in his shop window. Did he know he’d just had a million dollar idea?! Probably not.

Fact is, however, that ever since the early 20th Century, teddy bears have been among the most popular toys – loved by children and adults alike, who collect them or just like to take a walk down memory lane with their plushy sidekicks.

Now then get your teddy bears out and celebrate in style! Popular things to do on Teddy Bear Day include having a picnic, watching Winnie The Pooh and/or hosting a tea party.

And, one additional perk, girls: you’re not lying when you tell the clingy guy from the club that you have a date with a nice, cuddly teddy bear.

tiMe for teddies The fi rst ever teddy bear museum was opened right here in Hampshire – though sadly it closed in 2006, having been opened in 1984 in Petersfield. We all need a little something to make us sweeter, right? Well, why not make it honey – September brings with it national Honey Week, so make like a bee and get buzzing with ideas! sweets for My sweet, sugar for My hoNey In the natural world, those lucky bees produce honey as a source of food, in hives containing a single chief female (known, unsurprisingly, as the queen); between 20 and 40,000 lady worker bees; and a variable number of male ‘drones’ depending on season, whose sole purpose is to mate with the queen and keep the hive populated.

Sounds like the ideal job for the boys, you’d think – but after setting the queen abuzz and doing their thing, the chaps simply keel over and die – making for a hell of a fi rst date, you could say! A hard job, we’re sure, but it’s the female workers who go out to collect the flower nectar which is later turned into honey, as well as raising larvae, proving that the struggle of the working mother resonates throughout the animal kingdom.

love buzz But how does the nectar become honey? Again we turn to the worker bees, who take in and regurgitate the nectar in their special ‘honey stomachs’. They then decide when the contents of their guts are ready for storage inside honeycombs and, if plucked from the hive at the right time by an experienced bee-keeper, the honey will not ferment, giving it a long shelf-life.

Why not use it as an alternative to sugar in tea or add it to warm milk and cinnamon? It’s even great a baking ingredient, in fact it can be used in almost anything!

Oh how everyone laughed. yet it seems they’ve had the last laugh. Because now yoga is hot. Damned hot. what is yoga?

It’s a generic term for the combination of physical, mental and spiritual disciplines through the exercising of the body and mind.

where did it origiNate?

It’s origins are said to have been in the Indus Valley, part of the NW region of the Indian subcontinent where historical records and archaeological fi ndings date back to the Bronze Age.

why is it so PoPular?

As popular today as it’s always been, devotees today are merely carrying on a tradition that has endeared for 5,000 years. There are currently estimated to be 250 million regular practitioners of Yoga globally. Most of them do it because they believe it’s a powerful and natural ‘medicine’ that keeps body and mind young, alert and agile. Some, like Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow have attempted to sex Yoga up in order to promote their image rather than that of the discipline itself.

seX yoga uP? how?

They are devotees of ‘Bikram’ Yoga which advocates doing the exercises in a very hot environment – the pretext being it helps them burn calories and lose weight.

Since Yoga has never really been a discipline anyone practices for weight loss it suggests they’d rather look hip and cool with their weight loss issues than merely cut out the carbohydrates like the rest of us do.

Crikey! does it work?

Serious research has been done into Bikram Yoga’s benefits, the results of which have shown it doesn’t burn off those pesky calories any quicker than traditional Yoga does.

CaN aNyoNe do yoga?

Yes, absolutely they can. It’s never too late to start.

Not that you’d be wanting to kick off with the Crane or Firefly Poses – they’re quite advanced!

what would i do if i started a Class?

Nothing too difficult! If you can easily sit cross-legged, then that’s a good start. There may be a little chanting or gentle stretching to begin with. Then some warm up poses but nothing too strenuous – nothing macho needed here, remember? The class might end with some fi nal stretches and maybe some relaxation exercises.

Archaeology is hot, sexy and everyone wants to get down on their knees and do it. Mayhem! digs a trial trench and takes a closer look. sorry, it’s all a bit dry aNd boriNg When you take Archaeology’s literal definition: “the study of human activity in the past, primarily through the recovery and analysis of the material culture and environmental data that they have left behind” – then yes, it does sound boring.

But hang on; this is not about learning history from a book.

This is immersing yourself right into it – it’s like having a Jacuzzi in the jets of the past and feeling it all around you.

hMMM...go oN Think about it. It’s being there, where history happened, and not just walking through a castle or stately home with all their antiseptic perfection and blue ropes keeping grubby fi ngers and enquiring minds at bay.

Home to the Statue of Liberty and the New York Yankees, it’s also playing host to the second-ever World Architecture Day following a successful launch in London last year – with a little help from the city’s Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIANY, for short), the aim is to show off the best new works by experienced and up and coming names from around the world in a celebration of international architecture.

In the past 100 years the number of wild tigers has dropped by about 95% to just over 3,000 animals.

Three sub-species; Bali, Caspian and Javan; have become extinct. There are now only six sub-species of tiger left in the wild; amur (Siberian), Bengal (Indian), Indo-Chinese, Malayan, Sumatran and South Chinese; but they are in real danger of extinction. September is the month dedicated by the World Wildlife Fund to the protection of tigers throughout the world.

why are their NuMbers deCreasiNg? There are many reasons for this including poaching for fur or body parts used in some Asian medicines, climate change, habitat loss, decline in prey numbers and human conflict. The areas in which the tigers live are being destroyed because cities or towns are expanding into tiger habitats, the trees are being cut down for wood and, in some areas, extra pressure on the tiger’s environment is brought on by climate change. This leads to tigers being forced to leave their existing home and search for a new habitat where their food sources may be depleted and they are more vulnerable to natural disasters like fire and flood.

where do wild tigers live?

There is no one place where tigers live; they are native to India, Far East Russia, South-East China and Indonesia.

Depending on the sub-species they can live in mangrove tree swamps, evergreen and monsoon forests or woodlands.

There are a lot of ways to help depending on how much you can pay.

aroMatheraPy One that the chaps may find hard to reconcile with their hard living image, but consider this… the correct use of essential oils can be quite effective in alleviating all sorts of medical conditions. Who hasn’t, for example, used Olbas Oil when they’ve had a cold? For inducing sleep, lavender is a popular choice…you can use it in a diffuser, or put a few drops in your pre-bedtime bath. Or you can even rub it into your skin before night-time.

Get into a good pre-bedtime routine.

Try to avoid using your PC/laptop for at least a couple of hours before you turn in. Have a warming, rather than hot, bath. Or a warm glass of milk – the feeling of comfort it induces encourages the brain to release serotonin which helps relax you. Lastly cups of coffee or fizzy drinks, alcohol or a heavy meal are all no-nos if you want a good night – while some over the counter painkillers contain caffeine, which won’t help either. And remember the golden rule: the bed is for sleep or sex only. If your mind associates the bedroom with things other than that (if you eat or study while on your bed, for example) it might make it more difficult for you to relax.

If you really are struggling with sleep related issues, go and see your GP who can help – there may well be an underlying issue affecting your sleep pattern that they can help identify and remedy. Night night!

Inspired by the great British Bake-Off, we at Mayhem! have been putting ourselves through the gruelling Fa (that’s Foodies anonymous) Cup Cake challenge a sort of ‘preseason’ for the hardened baker, a warm-up for the curtain-raiser that is national Cupcake Week, the Premier League of sweet treats – which takes place from 16th–22nd September.

And frankly we can't wait, though Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood can be somewhat brutal in their training methods, reducing us to tears with rants that would put Sir Alex Ferguson to shame.

CuP, uP aNd away To trace the history of this tiniest of treats, we take a short hop across the pond to the United States – where Amelia Simmons included a recipe for ‘a cake to be baked in small cups’ within the pages of American Cookery (1796).

Fast forward a few years, though, and by 1828 Eliza Leslie’s rival cookbook, somewhat confusingly called ‘Receipts’ (we don’t know if it was so called because she accidentally left the receipts for the ingredients she’d bought within the pages of each copy, but either way we wouldn’t recommend scoffi ng the little slips of paper, they’re not very tasty). This cook book was the fi rst to feature the word ’cupcake’ in its modern form.

away with the fairy Cakes Our alternative name for the cupcake is the fairy cake, which has fallen out of use on these shores in recent years (perhaps because we don’t want our EU partners and overseas relations suffering as other countries consider us a bit namby-pamby and fall about laughing at our girly confectioners in the middle of a trade summit).

But actually it’s intended as a rather storybook manner of describing their size, as in ‘small enough for a group of fairies to share at a tea party’.

At this point it’s probably best to point out that you don’t have to wear wings into your nearest bakery when ordering them, it might get you a few funny looks in the queue!

CoMPetitioN tiMe If you’re itching to whip out your baker’s hat and get cracking (though an over-long scarf or multi-coloured eyesore coat will do, just ask arguably this country’s most famous Bakers, Tom and Colin), why not test yourself against the best of the rest in National Cupcake Week’s competitions?

one to one witH… You launched your first album when you were just 12 years old, can you remember the experience?

I can, it was totally crazy, a really different way to spend your teenage years. I got to do some incredible things and travel all over the world, it was massively educational.

I was really fortunate. I had a blast.

If you could go back and start again, what would you do differently?

I’d change nothing, because you can’t change anything so why bother fantasising about it?

How do you feel about classical singing and would you revert to that genre of music again?

I love classical music and I wish it were more widely listened to. It’s a shame that it’s seen as a niche thing because it’s entirely singular in what it gives as an art form, and I think it would be great if everybody had more exposure to it. As far as my enjoyment goes, I’ve been listening to a lot of 20th Century classical music recently.

How has the industry changed for you having started out so young?

It’s a different industry thanks to the expansion of the internet and how it’s democratised the process of making music. It’s great that there is an easy route to get heard, but it’s also not so great in that the market is flooded to some extent. A lot of people who would never be heard are fi nding audiences now though, which is a great thing.

You’ve worked in a variety of genres, which has been the challenging and the most satisfying?

Everything I’ve done before has been well within my abilities and I’ve not pushed the boundaries. It’s come pretty easily. The music I’m making at the moment, which is entirely free in it’s creative boundaries, is defi nitely the most challenging because anything can happen. It’s the most enjoyable thing I’ve done though, and the most satisfying.

You’ve performed for some pretty notable figures, the Pope, the US President, the Queen to name few…

Do you get nervous?

I’m getting more nervous as I get older; fear creeps in with age!

what else would you like to achieve?

I am interested in TV but only if it was high-quality, innovative and collaborative. I wouldn’t want to have something built around me like that again.

Do you like the industry you’re in?

Sometimes I fi nd the music industry so vicious and volatile that it makes me sad that this is where my heart lies, that this is where I have to live but it is what it is. I dislike the fact that it relies on the lowest common denominator to satisfy the capitalists.

You even won a British Comedy Award for The Charlotte Church Show. Do you consider yourself ‘funny’. Have you considered trying a bit of Stand-up?

I have considered trying stand-up, but I don’t think I’m very funny; I’m quite serious. It would have been a bit more of a rant than a routine.

What would you like to see in the future and what would you change?

The only thing I’d like to see for the industry is an increase in risk-taking.

If something isn’t a sure-fi re hit, but it still has quality, it should be given a chance; artists should be given a chance to grow.

Have there been points where you’ve considered giving it all up for a different life altogether?

Yeah, totally.

If you could do anything else what would it be?

Particle physics.

Since the launch of your last album, ‘Back to Scratch’, you’ve released three EPs. Why did you choose to do this instead of producing another LP? There’s a freedom to recording and releasing material when it’s ready and relevant to me. An LP requires a certain length of time, it’s a long cycle.

We can work quicker, and evolve quicker like this.

Where do you get the greatest satisfaction, writing, recording or performing?

Recording, defi nitely. It’s the most creative part of the process.

You’ve branched into television in recent years, with some acting and your own chat show. Can you see yourself doing more and more television in the future? and if so,

You’ve spoken recently about X-Factor and the effect it’s having on your industry. How would you go about discovering emerging talent?

I have a publishing company called See Monkey Songs with a couple of friends, the aim of which is to do exactly that. We work with mainly local welsh artists and take people on the basis of quality rather than genre or commercial appeal.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

On a beach with two owls called Raoul and Raoina.

Has there ever been anyone that has taken your breath away or taught you something that changed your outlook on life?

I’m pretty hard to impress. My bampi and my children manage it on a daily basis.

Tell us about your work with charity The Topsy Foundation and how you came about becoming patron?

I found out about it through a friend and thought that it was something I’d love to support, so I asked how I could get involved. I need to go out there again soon, actually; they’re based in South Africa and it’s really cool what they do.

So tramp through the mud with mayhem! as we explore the world of the wellington.

GIVe IT SoMe

welly! fit for a duke The origins of the welly can be traced back to Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, better known as the First Duke of Wellington – with the footwear bearing his name born after he instructed his London shoemakers to make a few modifications to what had been Hessian boots, the choice of the well-heeled 18th Century gentleman.

Designed to reflect two of the Duke’s great concerns, battle and comfort in its aftermath, the new boots also took care of one of the most common complaints of the British cavalrymen of the period – with a surprisingly high number of wounds sustained by a craft y shot to the knee, a simple change to the cut of the boot allowing 52 maYHem! | autumn 2013

for better knee coverage and thus protection in the heat of battle.

But they also quickly became a fashion accessory, anyone who was anyone was quick to snap up a pair, with dandies no doubt falling over themselves to emulate the war hero and unlikely fashion icon.

welly i Never Happily in the modern age they’re used less for confl ict and more for fashion – wellies have never been trendier! But they also have an obscure (and very British) sporting purpose. If you should fi nd yourself in Holmfi rth, a very special corner of West Yorkshire, why not take part in a spot of welly wanging?

The aim of the game is simple enough – throw a welly as far as possible, taking care to stay within the specially marked boundaries.

If stealing one of your friend’s foot-umbrellas will inspire superhuman feats in the field, do feel free to do so! Be mindful though, there are rules, as laid down by the World Welly Wanging Association!

Clearly there’s a worldwide trend, as Germany, Poland and other similar countries host boot-throwing tournaments, and New Zealand borrows the welly wanging format for its own ‘gumboot’ throwing. So why not put a little welly into your life and show some appreciation on Welly day, 16th September.
