StrANge But true…

neWs Showbiz, Politics and Royal Babies: the three topics that consistently dominate the front pages of newspapers around the country. But skim past these usual offenders and a wealth of wacky news stories are waiting to be gawped at. Here at Mayhem!, we have sifted through the column inches to deliver a round-up of the weirdest stories the press has to offer, so make a cup of tea, put your feet up, and read the news, but not as you know it.

crocodiLe Lodger Fed up of your current house mate, well how about swapping them for a real life crocodile?! That’s something that Chris Weller from Kent decided to do and spent £23k in the process. Mr Weller bought his beloved pet when he was just a foot long, but now at 6ft Mr Weller has had to convert his bungalow so he can live upstairs, whilst the croc lives downstairs. The conservatory has even been converted into a swimming pool…that’s one lucky croc!

nucLear JeLLyFisH A huge swarm of common moon jellyfish forced one of the world’s largest nuclear reactors in Sweden to shut down. Tonnes of jellyfi sh clogged the pipes that bring a constant flow of cool water to the plant’s turbines and reactor. You’ll be pleased to know that they’ve been cleared out and it’s now back up and running.

Technology is evolving all the time, however we never thought we could be brushing our teeth with something that is produced by a printer. Well think again… the printed toothbrush has been created. The brush, which resembles a gum shield, is covered in bristles and is made to fit an individual’s mouth using scans. It’s claimed that it can clean your teeth in just six seconds flat, by clamping the brush in your month and grinding your teeth. Hmmm…think we’ll stick to the traditional method for a while longer!

caugHt By a cucuMBer… During a burglary in Preston, Billy Joe Donnelly must have found himself rather ravenous as he ate a variety of produce from a couple’s greenhouse and then proceeded to burgle their home. However Donnelly left a half eaten cucumber at the scene of the crime and this was what ultimately led to his conviction due to the DNA found on the vegetable. He was “caught by a cucumber” declared the judge. 8

YoU LosE wrItten by JeNNie rAWLiNg

Ahh, the lie-in. That great Sunday morning tradition. The wonderful feeling of repeatedly hitting the snooze button and snuggling back under the sheets. After a busy working week it feels like the best thing in the world. But is it really all that good for you?

WHat tHe experts say According to a group of scientists in South Korea, people who get less than six hours’ kip a night during the week can reduce their risk of high blood pressure by up to 39 per cent if they have a lie-in at the weekend. Great news, right? Not necessarily. Dr Gregory Carter from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre says that a weekend lie-in is a bad idea. It disrupts the body’s internal clock and leaves you feeling even more tired come Monday morning. 10 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

so WHat’s tHe Verdict? It seems to be a case of mixed messages, even from the experts. One report says ‘it’s good for you’, another says the opposite. The reasons often make sense on both sides of the argument. Perhaps the more important question is, do you care? Everyone knows that binge drinking is bad for your health, but every Saturday night the pubs and clubs are fi lled with people letting their hair down with a drink or six. Would you give up your sacred lie-in just because someone told you it was bad for you?

a speciaL treat Perhaps the best attitude to take is to try to get seven or eight hours’ sleep a night on a regular basis. Now that one the experts do all agree on, although it’s easier said than done! This way a lie-in could become a special treat every once in a while, perhaps after a particularly long night. For tips from the Sleep Council on how to make the most of your lie-in, go to www.sleepcouncil.org.uk/ national-sleep-in-day.

Luscious Lips It may be obvious, but Vaseline is an absolute must-have purchase to keep your lips from chapping in the harsh weather conditions. It’s simple, effective and lasts for ages.

Moisturising is a Must With winter comes dry skin and you need not hide yourself away for months. You can buy loads of great moisturisers very cheaply (most of which are just as effective as the very expensive branded products). So keep your skin hydrated to reap the benefits.

Make-up There are many excellent bronzers out there if you want to keep the summery look going a little longer. Alternatively, wearing darker shaded lipsticks and eye shadows throughout winter really enhances a pale winter complexion (maroon is very ‘in’ this season).

Top 5 Tips for

Winter Beauty So, it’s that time again, the nights are drawing in, it’s colder, wetter and drearier than you ever remembered. But don’t fret because Mayhem! is here with some top beauty tips that will keep you looking and feeling great all winter long. And this goes for the boys too!

12 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

Hair care Cold winds don’t have to mean frizzy, dry, disheveled looking hair. Using a lower heat hair dryer and avoiding heat based styling products where possible will help keep split ends to a minimum.

Hydration It’s still crucially important to stay hydrated and if you get fed up with water, try herbal or green teas for a little variety. You can buy a range of flavours from most supermarkets, from cranberry to mint. Not only do they keep you warm and toasty, they’re packed full of vital antioxidants that will rescue you from the inside, and give a healthy glow on the outside.

Most of us take them for granted – but we’d be in a bit of a state without them. We’re talking trees here, the lungs of planet Earth. And, with National Tree Week coming up to remind us all as to just how important they are, Mayhem! takes the opportunity to pay the humble tree a little overdue respect.

trees wrItten by edWArd cOuzeNS-LAke

WHy are trees iMportant? Where do I start? Perhaps most importantly of all – trees produce oxygen! Think back to those dreary GCSE lessons in Biology – remember ‘photosynthesis’? Part of that process within a tree is the release of life giving oxygen into the atmosphere. One mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen over the summer as 10 people inhale in a whole year. If all the trees suddenly disappeared one thing would be very clear, very quickly – breathing would not be a very pleasurable experience at all!

apart FroM tHe WoW, tHat Bad? oxygen – WHat Yes. Think about it. The air around HaVe tHe trees us would become poisonous and eVer done For us? unbreathable while the soil would be Well, they also absorb dangerous chemicals and other pollutants that have entered the soil – the phrase for that is phytoremediation. They also help cleanse the air around us by intercepting airborne particles such as carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide, amongst others. Then there’s their importance in fi ghting soil erosion by where their roots bind the soil. Without trees the world would swift ly become uninhabitable.

equally contaminated – and with 2.5 billion people on earth dependant on it for agriculture and, in many cases, their very existence – that would be catastrophic on a global basis. There would also be a worldwide water shortage – massively deforested areas are liable to chronic droughts that would, amongst other things, disrupt industrial operations globally and wipe out all forms of crop production.

so HoW can i HeLp a tree? Glad I’ve got your attention. It isn’t all doom and gloom for the planet’s trees. But we all need to learn more about them and how important they are – for everyone. 16 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

If you want to do something, get involved in National Tree Week. It runs from 23rd November to the 1st December and you can help by participating in some of the many

tree planting programmes Their aim this year is to plant at least a million new trees. So get out there and get your hands dirty – for the sake of our planet and for the trees themselves.

Winter Foods FOR PEAK HEALTH

wrItten by eMMA PereirA

Spinach

As days shorten and a chill creeps into the air, thoughts turn to fending off colds and avoiding the office lurgy. The best foundation for winter health is to eat plenty of natural, wholesome foods and avoid the junk as far as you can. Easier said than done, right? Wrong! It’s not that difficult to find easy, nutritious recipes based on fruits, vegetables and wholegrains.

eat your greens... Your mother was right, you know. Daily helpings of green vegetables help fend off winter colds by keeping the immune system in tip-top condition. Green leaves spent all summer storing the sun’s energy as chlorophyll, so by eating them in winter you are literally nourishing yourself with sunshine. For example, you could quickly steam or stir-fry a pile of spinach, broccoli or winter greens to enjoy with each meal. Add baby spinach, spirulina or chlorella to a morning banana smoothie or toss a bag of kale in olive oil and gently bake into gorgeous deep green crisps. You’ll reap the benefits!

Butternut Sq

don’t crasH diet!

...and your oranges Fruits and vegetables with an orange colour are also essential at this time of year. The orange colour is beta-carotene, which is a building block of vitamin A and is needed by the retina for good vision. That’s why you hear that rumour about carrots helping you see in the dark. And you’ll notice squashes, pumpkins and root veg in abundance at this time of year – nature is a clever gal who provides the right foods at the time they’re needed. Try halving a winter squash, roasting it and scooping out the hot flesh with a spoon to make soup or enjoy straight from the shell.

18 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

stay Hydrated It’s easy to forget to drink water in the darker months. Cold water just doesn’t seem appealing when you’re sat at your desk in a scarf. Instead, brew a big teapot of herbal infusion and drink it throughout the morning. Peppermint, lemongrass and nettle teas are all delicious and support your immune system. As an added bonus, you can warm your hands on the mug!

This is not a good time to try and shed excess weight. The human body responds to the drop in temperature by trying to conserve energy and take on fat reserves. This means it will be much harder to resist temptation in the form of sugary snacks, carbs or whatever food group you are denying yourself. However, by enjoying wholegrains and starchy vegetables, you will satisfy the need for warm, comforting foods without piling on the empty calories. To get off to a good start, begin the day with a hearty bowl of hot porridge topped with fruit and nuts, or wholegrain toast with beans and mushrooms.

ONe tO ONe With… Momentum is your sixth album; can you tell us about it? It’s my first album where I’ve contributed 90% original songs. I didn’t start out to make a record like this it just gradually revealed itself to be as it was. The whole album happened in a whirlwind of not over thinking stuff. It was a real pleasure. You play many of the instruments on this new album yourself and recorded much of it alone at home. What freedom does this give you? It makes you live inside your own head a lot more. You’re not constantly seeking others’ approval around you and it leads to a more personal statement. I do love to delegate and enjoy the talent of others but sometimes, in the way studio technology has evolved, it can be really fun to put it all together yourself. Maddening sometimes, but really fun. How does that compare to your previous work? My previous albums have definitely been more collaborative. A casual listener would assume this is more of a ‘pop’ album too. This, to me is not the case. The contemporary references are more obvious this time for sure. But I can’t and will never escape being a jazz musician! What comes first for you, the beat? The chords? The lyrics? Can you talk us through your process? It’s so particular from song to song. The song Everything You Didn’t Do started with a beat – me playing the drums in my pyjamas! The joyousness of the beat and the excitement of the fact I was playing it (however simple) inspired this song about positivity and the feeling that all the good stuff is still ahead. The song Sad, Sad World began absolutely with the lyric – “Will you help me paint a smile on this sad, sad world” – the music followed soon after, just simply, on my upright piano in the hall of my house at night time.

How long does it take to write a song and what one thing do you need in order to do so? Some can take 40 minutes, often though it’ll take a couple of weeks from inspiration to fine tuning and completion. Where do you get your inspiration from? I always find this a slightly odd question and never know how to answer it! Getting inspiration for stuff just happens doesn’t it? Anywhere, anytime. The question I guess is not where you get it from but what you do with it when you get it and whether you can isolate it and run with it. That’s the bit that takes a bit of craft and practice which I’m still working hard at! Does every song have a story behind it? Can you tell us one? You’re Not the Only One from Momentum was very specifically about a time when I worked as a judge on a Sky One show called Must be The Music. It’s a song about musicians trying to make it in the world and how hard it is to aspire to your dreams. The majority of this new album is original, with two new covers. How do you decide which songs to cover, and which to include on the album? I always end up doing covers by accident, it’s never something I really think through. I have a pretty good ear which means I can play things after hearing them once. It means often I’ll sit at the piano and play something I heard on the radio that morning. Sometimes they stick – if they do, then you’ll normally hear me doing it at a gig or on an album! What song are you most proud of writing and why? Sad, Sad World from Momentum is one of my favourite lyrics I’ve ever written. It manages to encapsulate a very complex feeling I had after

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

having kids. I was both incredibly joyful but also more aware than ever of how scary and sad the world is to bring children into. Nearly every track has a different feel and musical style and you worked with a number of amazing producers across the album. Was this intentional? Nearly everything I do is an accident! That certainly was the happy accident in this case. I never intentionally try to mix tons of styles. I just really like a lot of different music and enjoy reflecting that in my own songs. Who did you choose to work with on each track and why? Dan the Automator (Gorillaz, Kasabian) really helps me get a great groove on songs and always makes the drums and the bass sound really crusty and fat. Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Adele) is amazing at bringing the best out of songs and bands playing together and capturing a performance. With such a diverse mix of contributors, who has made the most impact, been most inspiring or had the most influence? Definitely my brother Ben. He really inspires me to follow my own muse and not try to live up to anything other than what I want to be musically. Who’s on your wish list for future collaborations? More work with Pharrell Williams is on the cards and I would LOVE to write songs with Damon Albarn. Introducing strings gives a much bigger sound and you’ve mentioned The Edge of Something having a ‘Bond-esque’ feel. Would you like to write a Bond theme? I think it is a major opportunity for any songwriter to write a bond theme, but SINGING it is the big one. A big iconic voice is needed! I would be honoured!! Autumn/wIntER 2013 | MAYheM!

ONe tO ONe With…

“It’s really made me want to raise my game”

Who was the last artist or band that made you more or less stop what you were doing and go “wow”? I watched Vampire Weekend live in France this summer. They were fantastic. Stylish and full of substance.

Grab Jamie’s new album Momentum, out now! If you could write any film theme tune, what would it be? I would love to write for the Fifty Shades of Grey film. I reckon I could nail that one. There is such a mix of styles on this new album: rock, pop, elements of dub and blues. Have you turned your back on jazz? I present a weekly Radio 2 show on jazz and there is a great deal of jazz on the album. Plus all my previous albums have included the above elements. So I guess the answer is no. Is this a coming of age album for you? Nope! Just another album! I’ve already made the next (an acoustic jazz album!) and am working hard on the the follow up to that. Keep looking forward. 22 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

Which of your six albums has proven most challenging for you and why? The album The Pursuit. It came after Catching Tales which was a commercial disappointment after 20Something. I had to really put that out of my mind and just focus on the music. We hear that you never work to a written set list and improvise at gigs. Have you ever found yourself not knowing what to do next? Always! That’s part of the fun I think and always when the best, most surprising moments happen. What’s your favourite song to perform on stage and why? Probably a song called Mixtape from The Pursuit. It always gets the crowd jumping! What are your pre-gig rituals? Whisky and a bit of a stretch! What’s your most embarrassing moment on stage? I headbutted a cameraman by accident once. We both got bleeding heads but carried on regardless.

Your radio show has given you the opportunity to speak to many other musicians and explore a plethora of widely unheard music. What effect has this had on your own musical journey? It’s been amazing and consistently inspiring. It’s really made me want to raise my game being so directly involved with so many extraordinary musicians every week. If you could take only one record to the moon, what would it be? John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. Spiritual and deep. Perfect for the moon. Music that feels like flying. Who, dead or alive, would you love to interview and why? Miles Davis – although he would probably scare the sh*t out of me. To all the budding musicians out there, what one piece of advice would you give? Keep doing it. Don’t stop. Play with musicians who are better than you. Play live whenever you can. Practice. Play from your heart. Avoid groupies who spend too much time on Instagram. What’s next for Jamie Cullum? Dinner and a cold beer!

MayheM! MeetS…

Tell us about what you’ve been doing since your last release. Well, we first toured the world, UK, Europe, USA and Australia. Then we did a 10 year anniversary tour of our first album. Had 3.5 children between us and pondered existence. Your new album is called We Were Here. Where exactly is ‘here’? It’s the idea of leaving a mark, of the only sure thing these days is that we, it, you, existed at this point but just that sensation might be the only proof of it! What inspired the new album? It might sound strange but Turin Brakes inspired this album. We thought long and hard about ‘if’ and ‘why’ and really looked to what we were about and what a Turin Brakes album should be. It might not necessarily be the result of endless experimenting, pushing our musical boundaries or doing anything we could wish or imagine, but maybe doing what was natural and simple to the people involved. What drew you to Wales to record the album? We wanted to work on tape in an analogue studio and we wanted to work with Ali Staton, who was based at Real World. Real World is like a futuristic space ship as we imagine it in 2013, Rockfield was like a vision of the future as seen from the 1970s. You’ve said before that on this album, you’ve recorded and worked more as a band than ever before. Can you describe the creation of the album for us? Musically it was in part inspired by being somewhat of a live entity – in that the weight of what you do at that moment will be re-written the next time you do it and therefore to not let the weight drag you down to a stationary position but to let the lightness free our every move. Am I talking rubbish ? Maybe ...

Which track on We Were Here is your favourite and why? It changes every day, it’s like a fine wine! At the moment it’s Blindsided Again, yesterday it was Stop The World, before that Inbetween. Who and what would you say has influenced your music of late? Working on tape was a big influence – in that we were back to an old school idea of what you’re doing in a studio. This is as much about capturing the spirit of the month or weeks you’re in there working, like a sound postcard of an event. You’re going on tour this October and November. What are you most looking forward to? Playing the new stuff. We’ve played a lot, but not all of it. I also like getting in a bubble with the men of the band and being able to talk a lot about not much until soundcheck time. For your tenth anniversary, you toured your first album, The Optimist, again. What made you do this and how did your fans react? We wanted to mark the passing of 10 years somehow – it seemed like the logical thing to do. Our agent agreed it would be better than a few pints in the pub so he threw the tour together. It was quite a challenge playing stuff in the order of the record and in the style of it – we did spend the following 10 years trying to make all those songs feel fresh by changing them every time we played them. How have you changed as individuals since the first album’s success? Physically there might have been some minor changes, almost unnoticeable though! We’ve been through a lot since the release of the first album. I heard it takes 7 years for your body to regenerate every cell, so that’s happened twice – I’m entirely new twice.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

We’ve lived through the sensation of being the new guys, the not so new, the old hat and out the other side and we still feel the same warm breeze on our faces. You’ve been making music together for over a decade now. What’s been the biggest challenge for you as a band and how did you overcome it? We’ve had highs and lows and at points you have to question why you do the things you are doing – for us I think we got to a point where the pleasure of making music was being ruined by an external idea of success and failure. As long as we’re making music that we ourselves deem to be worthy we will carry on. We might not always be doing it as intensely as much as we do now but I doubt we’ll ever stop. What are your thoughts on the music industry today and how has it changed during the past decade? It’s changing everyday – Twitter and Facebook have become mass marketing tools, and the internet in general offers a chance to advertise endlessly for free. I’m just glad they’re not asking us to make an app for the new album. The human interest is still the same – give us something we all know and love or show us something new. It’s still an exciting place. If you could ask any other artist to feature with you, who would it be and why? We do collaborate from time to time – one of my favourites has been with Flux Pavilion – his music is in one way the other side of the spectrum, but that was what was so exciting about it. I generally feel like you want to collaborate with people that aren’t doing the same thing as you. We asked Steve Winwood if he’d play a bit on this record, I believe he heard it but wasn’t available. Still love his work though. Autumn/wIntER 2013 | MAYheM!

MayheM! MeetS…

Grab the new album, out now!

“We’re ready to ride the biggest wave if it comes but equally ready to enjoy every wave we surf, one at a time.”

Olly, you released a solo album last year. What did you learn from this experience and will there be more solo projects in the future? I loved making that solo record, it was an important stepping stone for the next Turin album, I like the idea of making more because it seems healthy, more music is better, but for now it’s all hands on deck at HMS Brakes. What influence has the social media world had on you? It’s defi nitely a good thing to be able to have direct contact with fans, it’s another window on what you do. You have to be careful though, like everything in life it’s probably healthy to not tell everyone everything all the time. 32 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

It’s been three years since Outbursts was released. Are you nervous about the launch of We Were Here and how it’ll do in the charts or are you just taking it as it comes? We want it to do well. We want it to be appreciated. We made an important album, but there is a whole other skill in making an album important if you see what I mean. We’re ready to ride the biggest wave if it comes but equally ready to enjoy every wave we surf, one at a time. Olly and Gael, you have been friends almost all your lives. What are your pet peeves of each other? We generally have a good understanding of each other. I actually have to think hard about

a peeve because when we start to have enough of each other we tend to just stay away. If you could go back to the beginning of your career, is there anything that you would do differently? I think we’d say yes to everything like writing or collaborating with people. There were a couple of times we wish we’d said no to the record company but you learn from these experiences. I’m not sure how many “mistakes” we made, there is a lot of luck involved and that’s sometimes good and sometimes bad! Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know? Have a good time, all the time!

Amazingly, an official league wasn’t founded until 1946, when the National Basketball League (forerunner to the NBA) came into being. A change of name soon followed on August 3, 1949, with various restructures as to how many teams were allowed in – 17 at the outset, compared to 30 today.

Hoops You might think it’s an American sports movie cliché, but if slam dunking means more to you than forcing a biscuit into your mid-morning tea you’ll most likely know that the end of October (the 29th to be precise) brings with it the start of the NBA (National Basketball Association) league season. Running until 16th April, with the all-important play-offs starting just three days later, it promises to be a veritable bevy of basketball – join Coach Mayhem! in the locker room and let’s hustle! 34 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

naisMitH’s netBuLgers

All those who were ever run ragged in pursuit of that big bouncy orange ball may not be all that surprised to learn that the game was invented by a PE teacher. The sadist in shorts responsible was James Naismith, who invented the game in 1891 while working at what is now Springfield College in Massachusetts, struggling to keep students active during a harsh winter. He was told by his boss, Dr Luther Gulick, the college’s Head of Physical Education, to create a new sport in order to keep the existing athletes and other sportsmen of the institution fit. He came up with basketball, an amalgamation of the popular sports of the time alongside practical concerns – writing its fi rst official rules later that year, with the fi rst game played in December, a sort of early Christmas present from the teacher to his students, possibly?

The Miami Heat are the current champions, retaining the title they won in the 2012 season to add to their fi rst victory in 2006. But if you want to sample some past masters, and the league’s most successful side having won 17 championships overall, head for the Boston Celtics. Should you want to go above and beyond just watching the Sky Sports coverage of America’s favourite net-rippling contests, a trip to The Garden (as their arena is known locally) to watch Brad Stevens’ men will most likely show you how it’s done. There’s even a British equivalent in the shape of the British Basketball League (BBL). Sky Sports 3 regularly shows games, with Leicester Riders currently holding both the title and bragging rights though Newcastle Eagles lead the way overall having won five since the league’s formation in 1987. Currently, though, there are no local teams as such, though the Reading Rockets are rumoured to be launching a bid to join an expanded league for next season having failed to do so fi rst time around in 2012/13. They currently play in Division One, the equivalent of the Football League’s Championship. So if it sounds like something you’d like to sample, check out www.reading-rockets.com. Let me see those game faces!

tAShtAStic! So fellas (Mo Bros) get involved! Allow your facial hair to just go wild (Mo Sistas, it’s probably not best you get involved with this one), and allow for a freeing facial experience! Over the years, more and more men, including celebrities, have got involved with the moustache growth. Therefore with such a large number of companions rocking the same trend, Mayhem! brings you the Mayhem! Mo Guide, to benefit you and your perfectly groomed prickly top lip. So 1st November comes about and it’s time to grow your mo, bully for you, you’re the man’s man! The rulings are as follows: wrItten by heNriettA OdeY-SOLe

Step 1: Begin Movember with a cleanly shaven face. This allows for true Movember Moustache authenticity. Cheating will simply result in your audience believing you may have werewolf blood surging through your veins.

November is here and the craze sweeping the nation is here once again! Launched back in 2007 in the UK, Movember is an annual, month-long event involving the growth of a moustache during the month of November. The Movember Foundation is a charity which raises awareness of men’s health and whose goal is a metaphor of its practice “change the face of men’s health”. The charity encourages both men and women (Mo Bros and Mo Sistas) to become involved in the attempt of increasing early cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment and to ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides getting annual check-ups, Movember encourages men to become aware of the inheritable possibilities of cancer, and to also adopt a healthier lifestyle. 36 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

Step 2: For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must grow, groom, and effectively maintain a moustache. There is to be no joining of the mo to one’s sideburns (this is considered a beard), and no joining of the handlebars to one’s chin (this is considered a goatee). And that’s it! It’s that simple to get involved in such a popular health screening concept. Now you’re allowing your facial hair follicles to work in overdrive, you’ve got to choose your mo style. This is where the Mayhem! Mo Guide will help. Choose a mo style, and over the month groom to maintain perfection. With a plethora of options there’s no doubt you’ll fi nd one to suit your top lip.

THE

Big screen The magic of cinema – you take your ticket, crunch your popcorn and slurp your drink during the trailers, a treat for the eyes before the main feature. But whether you’re a budding director, writer, or simply an enthusiast, why stop there?

The BFI (British Film Institute) Festival runs into late October (from the 9th–20th, to be precise). What better excuse to take a trip into London and see what’s on? A full schedule can be found at www.bfi.org.uk.

eVeryone’s a critic Now in it’s 56th year, the Festival came about as a result of the success of similar glitzy affairs in Cannes, Venice, and Edinburgh! A group of the country’s most influential film critics, including Dilys Powell, the leading lady of the Sunday Times, had argued for a similar event to be held in London. This was to offer the general public the chance to see films they might not otherwise get the chance to in their standard local cinema. It was with this in mind that after a lavish opening gala, a tradition which continues today, the Institute Director James Quinn announced a 38 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

programme of fi lms by leading world cinema directors of the period. Among them was Akira Kurosawa and Satyajit Ray, all very academic, you may think, but you’d be wrong. The air of formality is reserved only for the opening and closing galas. Festival fi lm screenings offer question and answer sessions with the people who created what you’ve just watched as well as providing a great source of news and information on planned future projects.

aWards season

screened during the festival; previous winners have included Jean-Luc Godard (for 1965’s Pierrot Le Fou) and the team of Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (for 2007’s Persepolis). Next on our red carpet is the Grierson Award for feature-length documentaries. Named for John Grierson, a Scot who made the highly regarded Drifters (1929) and Night Mail (1936), this award honours fi lms made in similar spirit, capturing real life as it happens in new and interesting ways.

Several awards are presented over the course of this cavalcade of cinema, with the Sutherland Trophy (named after the BFI’s original patron, George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the Fift h Duke of Sutherland), arguably the most sought-after.

A separate ceremony then brings with it the more celebrated and arguably celebrity-fi lled accolades Best Film (self-explanatory really), Best British Newcomer (does what it says on the tin) and BFI Fellowships (honouring established talent).

Given to the ‘most innovative and original’ fi rst or second feature fi lm

So polish off your glad-rags and practice walking that red carpet!

WONderS Of the WOrLd!

WRITTEN BY chriS MOrLeY

Are you fed up? Does your life often feel like a broken record? If you’re looking for a few thrills and spills to liven things up, a world record attempt could be just the ticket!

rECorD Breakers

This 16th November is Guinness World Record Day, so get thumbing your copies of the record books and see if there’s an opening with your name on it. We’re trying to set a world record for ‘most tea drunk’ and ‘most biscuits consumed’ here in the office, so good luck to you!

tHat’s dedication eager BeaVer You’d be forgiven for wondering who the fi rst nutter to attempt some bonkers feat in hope of immortality was – our story begins with the magnificently monikered Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Guinness Breweries and no doubt the object of many envious glances from his fellow Irishmen. The year was 1951, and Hughie was part of a shooting party in County Wexford. In a surreal twist he became involved in a heated debate with a fellow hunter over which was the fastest game bird of them all, the golden plover or the grouse? The plover proved worth its weight in gold after he realised there was no mention of the fact in any reference book. Aiming to settle this, and many other pub-chat worthy articles of discussion, he set about creating a book that would become a sacred tome to all those with a burning urge to tell their drinking buddies ‘told you so’ – and even better, he found twin brothers Norris & Ross McWhirter (although they perhaps sound as if they should have been in the Bay City Rollers, they were running their own ‘fact-fi nding agency’), who were promptly commissioned to put together Guinness’s fi rst Book Of Records, which was published in 1955. 42 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

A television series based on the books, Record Breakers, was fi rst aired by the BBC in December 1972 with the McWhirter twins co-presenting alongside actor Roy Castle. The brothers would answer questions posed by their young fans in an On The Spot feature, with even Roy getting in on the act; breaking nine records in the studio as well as singing the closing tune that accompanied every episode – Dedication being its apt name. Sadly Ross McWhirter was assassinated by the Provisional IRA in 1975, though the show went on until 2001 with a revolving cast of guest hosts including Cheryl Baker (originally of Bucks Fizz fame), Kriss Akabusi and Fearne Cotton. We’ve also looked into backdated claims that the Electric Light Orchestra had broken a record of some kind, though upon closer inspection its simply an album title – A New World Record was released by Jeff Lynne and company in 1976. It seemingly attempted to break the record for ‘most instruments on a single album’, as alongside the standard guitar/bass/drums rock group set-up, there’s a whole array of piano, keyboard, synthesiser and orchestral flourishes to the likes of Rockaria, Telephone Line and Livin’ Thing. If you do attempt to break any records, remember to check yourself before you wreck yourself! To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

In general, no. Many sufferers lead normal, day-to-day lives. The main danger of the condition for them is having a fit in a situation that may lead them to become vulnerable – for example, if they are driving, standing on a train platform or engaged in a pursuit where the fit and subsequent loss of consciousness might be life threatening. Luckily, many sufferers are aware if a fit is coming and are able to take preventative measures before it happens – it gives them time to lie down or let someone know what is about to happen and what they might need to do.

can it Be cured? In some cases surgery is an option as a treatment to cease or reduce the frequency of fits. Some sufferers prefer specialised diets which are thought to reduce the chances of them having a fit. Most take regular medication which, rather than acting as a cure, simply aim to eliminate or at least reduce the frequency of their fits. These are known as anti-convulsants.

There doesn’t seem to be one prime cause of epilepsy. It has been recognised as a symptom of brain damage or even a tumour but this is by no means unique. Some people have their fits triggered by a host of different causes – a flickering TV screen for example, or strobe lighting. In many cases, an individual’s epilepsy is thought to be ‘idiopathic’: there is no clear explanation as to why they are suffering from fits. One school of thought believes such cases to have an underlying genetic cause.

i CAN’T CoME iN ToDAY going to get Me isn’t it? i’Ve got tHeF Lu it’s

We’ve all pulled that at one time or another haven’t we? With the flu season pending, Mayhem! doses itself up and finds out more.

Not necessarily – there are things you can do to help yourself and others. Always cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze or use a disposable hanky. Wash your hands regularly – you might consider using an antibacterial hand gel. And use antiseptic wipes on surfaces that you touch frequently, like telephones, mobiles, keyboards, iPads, door handles, etc.

WHat iF i catcH it?

i tHink i’Ve got tHe FLu

a Bit More tHan ‘Just’ a coLd tHen?

If you’ve got a bit of a runny nose but are otherwise still up and about then you probably haven’t. Flu is not the same as the common cold. For a start it’s caused by a different group of viruses. Flu symptoms also tend to be more severe and last for a lot longer – put it this way, if you do have the flu, you won’t want to be doing very much at all.

Yes indeed. Having a cold isn’t very nice admittedly. But most of us can carry on with our normal day-to-day activities with the help of lots of paper hankies and the occasional honey and lemon drink. Flu on the other hand is a bad boy; it makes you want to go to bed and stay there.

WHat are tHe syMptoMs? Flu causes a sudden high temperature, headache, general aches and pains, a sore throat and a feeling of extreme fatigue, usually all at the same time. And if that isn’t enough, you can also lose your appetite and have the sort of cough a buffalo would be proud to call its own. 46 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

HoW do i catcH it? The flu virus is contained in the millions of tiny droplets that come out of the nose and mouth when someone who is infected coughs or sneezes. They can drift outwards by as much as a metre and survive, either still airborne or on an adjacent surface, for up to 24 hours! You can catch the flu simply by breathing them in or by touching your nose or mouth after having also touched an infected surface.

The best remedy is to stay at home, rest, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Ask a pharmacist about suitable over the counter remedies you can take – better still, stay at home and get someone to ask for you! Don’t assume antibiotics are the answer to all your woes; they are issued for bacterial infections caused by bacteria. As flu is caused by a virus it’s unlikely your GP will prescribe them – and with good reason, misuse of antibiotics can give you more serious health problems than you bargained for.

sHouLd i see tHe doctor? You should certainly consult your local surgery if you have flu-like symptoms and are aged 65 or over, pregnant, have a long term medical condition or a weakened immune system. In these cases, flu can be a little more serious than usual and the doc may want to prescribe you some antiviral medicine. As with all medical and general health matters, this is written and presented as an informal reference only. If you have any questions or worries relating to your health or that of anyone else, always consult a medical professional.

BLOgrOLL!

THE poWEr of Wordpress Websites are a fantastic way to promote your business and make yourself visible online. However, the ultimate question is: which website designer to choose and, more importantly, what type of website to go for? We have tried to unravel the mystery surrounding website design and to lay bare the intricacies of a dynamic website.

coMpreHensiVe serVice The fi rst task is to decide what services will be included with the package you choose. Are you going to provide loads of pictures and content for the website? Do you want your website to fi gure high on the search engine results pages? Do you plan to design a logo from scratch and are you going to use it on different items of stationery? These are the few questions which are imperative when looking for your website designer as you can then select the best package and obtain value for money for your site. If you are at a loss, choose a designer who 48 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

provides all those services: note that copywriting services (or writing content) can also be part of the package for an additional cost.

tHe ‘dynaMic’ site The burning hot question to ask yourself in those early stages is: do you want to update the content yourself as time goes by? If you will be dealing with forthcoming events all year round and need to constantly update your website, then you need to get this point across to your designer. In this case he/she will recommend a Content Management System (CMS) and the so-called ‘dynamic’ website.

Wordpress WordPress is a recommended CMS as it’s very user-friendly and is very customisable. The great thing about it is that it is known as ‘open source’: “a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design” (according to Wikipedia). It’s therefore available to download for free. You can create, add and edit content at your leisure, without the need to go into the code. If you choose an already designed theme for your website (a free or a paid one), you won’t have to code at all as the work has already been done for you. If you want a bespoke custom theme,

you can discuss it with your designer and still have access to the dashboard later on, allowing you to chop and change content. This will mean less cost for you in the long run as you won’t have to ask the designer to keep making changes.

searcH engine optiMisation Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the technique used to get your website high up the ranks when someone searches for the type of services you offer. WordPress has a number of free SEO plugins, and many SEO-friendly features already built in. The designer does not have to incorporate the SEO in the initial build itself although configuration is still necessary with the plugins. Once set up, the plugins have the fantastic task of steering you in the right direction regarding your content. Your content needs to be, of course, meaningful, descriptive and well-structured, employing keywords to enable the customer to easily find you on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). There is also ongoing developer support through the WordPress forums and software updates to maximise the SEO.

otHer Features Other WordPress plugins can be incorporated and easily add wonderful, marketing-orientated features to your site. For example, if you want to add social media buttons to your site, such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ so that people can like and bookmark your site, WordPress facilitates this functionality.

neW content Adding new, fresh content brings more and more people to the website as it’s pushed up the page rankings and is more easily found when your potential customer does a Google search. A blog, if added to your site, will also work wonders and will act like a customer-magnet especially regarding page rankings.

cLean Look For that polished, clean look, WordPress is the ultimate winner of hearts. Originally conceived as a blogging platform, it has evolved to further support custom themes so that it can fit in with the look and feel of a website. Since it’s also interactive and easy to maintain, has got lots of additional features and gives your website more visibility online, it’s the winner all round. in the fickle fashion world, models come and go, but then there are those who have that special something – and few of those stars shine brighter than Erin o’Connor… The late Gianni Versace claimed she was “the best catwalker” while Karl Lagerfeld once called her “one of the greatest models in the world”. But i can’t Write a noVeL in one MontH!

WHy Was nanoWrMo created? The idea is that novel writing isn’t an elite craft that can only be done by professionals. The majority of NaNoWrMo contributors are not professionals, they’re hairdressers, shop workers and accountants but by the end, they’re novelists. It’s grown from 21 members in 1999 to more than 250,000 in 2011 and even more today. 52 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

From amateurs to established writers, everyone will tell you that starting is the most difficult part. The beauty of NaNoWrMo is that with so many people starting at the same time, you’re provided with a built in support network which everyone can benefit from. The online forums are full of tips and tricks and the Portsmouth group has regular meetings throughout the month. The target is 50,000 words in 30 days – in case you’re wondering, that’s two-thirds the length of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (77,508 words). You’re not expected to produce a fully-fi nished, ready-topublish novel by 1st December, but you should be on your way to a fi rst draft, ready for editing and completion.

HoW do i take part? The fi rst step is to register free on Nanowrimo.org and start planning. You can’t start writing without an idea but the more research and preparation you do before the start of November, the better chance you will have to get something written in time. Tell your friends, family, classmates and colleagues and get them enthused – you’ll need their support when the going gets tough. All you’ve got to do next is get writing! So make a start on 1st November, and don’t give up.

WHoa, HoLd on a Minute. an engLisH WHisky? Absolutely – there are a few small distilleries producing whisky in England including one in Norfolk which began production in 2006. They created a limited edition whisky in 2011 at the time of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton which had an eye watering abv of 46%.

WHat’s tHe diFFerence BetWeen scottisH and irisH WHisky tHen? Good question. It’s essentially down to the distilling process. Scottish whisky, ‘Scotch’, is distilled twice whereas Irish whisky goes through the same process three times – this gives it that particular lightness of taste that is so distinctive. There are other differences (eg) Scotch is cask: aged for at least two years, Irish for three. But the distilling process is perhaps the most notable one.

The icy winds and snowbound months of winter are fast approaching and more than a few people will be thinking of a little tot of whisky, an indulgence enjoyed whilst out in the cold else sat, relaxed in front of a roaring fire. Mayhem! bids you come close and learn more about the golden nectar itself.

aH yes. WHisky. it’s FroM scotLand. Well, yes and no. It is, of course, famously known as the drink of the glens and highlands and as Scottish as tartan and haggis. But Scotland is just one of many whisky producing nations.

sucH as? Ireland for a start – Irish whisky was one of the earliest distilled drinks in Europe with records dating back to the 12th century. However, whisky is also manufactured in the USA, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Japan and Wales. There is even an English whisky. 54 MAYheM! | Autumn/wIntER 2013

WHat aBout aMerican WHiskey? Ever seen the old Westerns when a cowboy swaggers into the saloon and calls for a ‘redeye’? That was the name for a whisky of dubious quality back in the 19th century. They’ve moved in since – Bourbon is a type of American whisky whilst Southern Comfort is a liqueur with whisky flavourings. Then of, course they have the ‘daddy’ of them all (in this writer’s opinion), Uncle Jack, aka Jack Daniel’s, a brand of sour mash Tennessee whiskey that is the bestselling American whiskey in the world.

HoW do you drink WHisky? There are myriad ways – but one golden rule, take your time. Whisky is all about quality not quantity. Adding water to your whisky dilutes it down a little and, as well as making the taste more manageable, it will also release more flavours and scents in the drink. Smell it, sip it, savour it. And select the right type of glass: tumblers are best, especially if adding water or mixers.

i’M conVinced. any recoMMendations? Whisky is an intensely personal drink. Go to an independent off-license and ask someone there. As a general rule, Scotch is slightly more ‘raw’ to the palate than Irish, which most people fi nd smoother and lighter. American whiskys tend to be sweeter than their counterparts here. But try some out, see what works – and what doesn’t. And remember – it’s a drink and an experience to cherish. So treat it with respect. To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408
