TASTE!
The majority of us love food – however with the high demand for unique and rare produce, the prices of particular foods have soared. Even to taste some of the worlds delicacies you’ll have to be willing to part with a whole lot of cash. Mayhem! is here with just a few to feast your eyes on.
ITALIAN WHITE ALBA TrUFFLE
£95,0
00
how much would you pay for a fungus? you might be surprised just how much some people really will. Rare truffles like the Italian White alba can be sourced around the world and found among the roots of trees. In huge demand, truffles are proving harder to fi nd, which is reflected in the price, although those who can afford it are still willing to pay for this fabulous fungus.
DENSUkE BLACk WATErMELoN Save your time searching the fruit aisles for this rare watermelon. The black skinned fruit grows on the island of hokkaido in Japan. Sweeter than your typical watermelon which is available pretty much anywhere, the Densuke Black Watermelon is in high demand. But with a harvest only gathering around 20 pieces at a time, you have to be very lucky and very rich to get your hands on one.
£3,60
0
ALMAS CAVIAr
£ 60 0
THE MATSUTAkE MUSHrooM mushrooms can be picked up for a pound a punnet in most stores, but for the matsutake mushroom you won’t be getting such a good deal. The most expensive mushroom in the world has previously been found on a number of continents including North america, asia and europe, although it is now proving incredibly hard to fi nd. The matsutake mushroom is especially sought after by the Chinese and Japanese who are particularly enamoured by its spicy-aromatic odour. 10 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
It’s widely known that caviar isn’t cheap, but this is a little over egged! almas Caviar is sourced from Iran, and the rareness of this particular variety is what makes it so expensive, not to mention the 24 karat gold packaging it £15,000 comes in. Thoughts of splashing this much cash on something that isn’t even cooked and will be gone in seconds is only an achievable privilege for the very wealthy.

TECH
PArkING IS A THING oF THE PAST Self Parking cars are also a reality and Google are working hard to bring this to the next level – with various cameras and sensors strapped to the outside of a car, it will maintain a speed and awareness of objects around it. This car reads the road and determines when to move based upon the junctions it approaches. Not current tech enough? mercedes along with a number of other manufacturers have created production line vehicles which will park the car for you, hands-free! The mercedes C Class Sport with active Parking assist comes as standard, for those who tire of parallel parking.
rEMoTE CoNTroL DELIVErIES
Consider this scenario for a moment: you awake in the early morning for work, wander down for breakfast to find that your milk was delivered direct to your fridge. After breakfast you wash, change and head off to work – with your car parking itself when arriving at your office. Towards the end of the day you decide to order the latest best selling book online, delivered to your door within a few hours and conveniently dropped off by a delivery drone which flies direct from the warehouse. Science fiction? Science fact. 14 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
Finally, what about delivery drones that drop your items at your front door, literally? Google have you covered. With amazon Prime air going through its paces, amazon are looking to utilise GPS and drone technology to service its customers who are nearby a depot. While we won’t be seeing the skies full of delivery drones just yet, testing is currently underway and their feasibility is looking more and more likely.
FrIDGES No LoNGEr JUST kEEP THINGS CooL you see, fridges ordering groceries on your behalf isn’t as far-fetched as you might think, thanks to the likes of LG’s LFX series refrigerators. These keep a tab on what’s in your fridge, when its content is past its use-by date and can even submit a shopping list to your phone, should you be running low on your favourite foods. The downside is it’s going to set you back around £2,000 for the benefit.
Beware! With the use of smart technology invading our homes scientists believe they have treated their first case of technology addition; a 31 year old man who used Google’s Glass technology – a headset with a window which beams messages and web browsing to your field of view – consistently for 18 hours a day, found being disconnected a disconcerting experience. While our technology might become an advantage with us always being connected, it could also become a hindrance.

STIMULATING SHADES
We all know there’s more to colour than just a treat to the eyes, they often represent and can even influence our emotions. So dig out your old mood rings and read on to find out what hue is best to spark your energy or calm those nerves. 16 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
If you’re looking to decorate your office or buy a colourful case for your laptop, but don’t know which colour to go for, try looking towards the blues and greens. Bright blues help to stimulate working performance, mixing calm concentration with happiness, keeping you focused but not feeling dull. Green colouring is known to help calm and positively encourage people to work – hence performers’ Green Rooms. Watch out you don’t go too deep with the shades, as too pastel a shade of green can be chilling, and too deep a blue can make you, well, feel blue.
ENErGISING BrIGHTS Bright yellow and orange are colours that, although sometimes sore to the eyes, are proven to increase a person’s energy levels by expressing happiness and enthusiasm. The sunny delight of a yellow can give you that little boost of energy you feel when you wake up to the sunshine cracking through your window. Orange is an exciting colour that gives you energy and enthusiasm – maybe now you’ll look twice at those neon coloured running shoes? But don’t over do it, too much yellow can induce anger and frustration.
PrETTy IN PINk Typically feminine colours like pink and purple can be used to create a joyful, calm environment. When first exposed to a pink shade, people are found to appear a lot calmer. The connotations of romance give this shade a cheerful feeling, although prolonged exposure can be agitating, so don’t go blushing too many permanent fixtures. Purple awakens the creative part of your brain, and a deep, rich tone will induce feelings of luxury. Shades that are too pale could produce a less calming effect, so keep the tones rich.

TUMMy rUMBLEr Red, an understandably popular colour in restaurants can increase a person’s appetite. a dramatic shade can be stimulating to the body, which creates a lively atmosphere especially when a group is mingling with food. It’s best kept away from bedrooms or living rooms as the wrong circumstances could easily disturb harmony and cause unwanted heat.
NEUTrALS If you don’t feel like having your emotions controlled by the colour-wheel, then the more modest, less dramatic colours such as creams and browns will suit you with their soft , welcoming tone. Black and white, when used in moderation, will create a steady balance that won’t disturb your emotions, and can be used to help settle the impact of other colours in order to create a peaceful mix.

WinTer heAlTh SUPPLEMENTS Staying fit and healthy isn’t easy, especially during the long winter months. Joining in with the festivities, hitting the booze and overeating can be tempting, but what about exercise? Exercise; what’s the point, now the sunshine has gone? Unfortunately these are all contributing factors when it comes to lowering our immune system.
mIND & BODy Here are a few ideas that can help you feel good during the winter months.
yoGA
Yoga has been around for hundreds of years. This spiritual exercise focuses on breathing and balancing the body. The flexible movements can help you lose weight, and energise and strengthen your body. During yoga oxygen levels are boosted to the brain, lowering stress levels, and helping you feel calm.

Packing in your seven a day of fruit and vegetables has massive health benefits. Snacking on fruit and veg as part of a healthy balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy too. Fruit and veg are packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
SWEAT IT oUT
Working up a sweat by power walking, running, a work out at the gym – or just using the stairs instead of the lift – not only flushes the toxins out of your body, but also helps control mood swings. German studies suggest it is like an invisible force-field against germs.
WATEr IT
Our bodies are made up of around 60% water, so drinking water helps maintain the balance of your body fluids. Hydrating your body helps energise your muscles; this can also keep you looking young and improves skin, as dehydration can make your skin look dry and wrinkled. It can also help you to lose weight; dieters have found drinking more water can contribute towards weight loss by giving the body what it needs and curb hunger cravings.

20 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
A FrAGrANT rEMINDEr Perfume preference is a very personal matter. When giving as a gift ideally try to find out what scent the recipient usually wears or favours and do a bit of research. If they like something light with citrus notes, presenting them with a heavy, floral scent may mean your gift ends up sitting unused on a shelf or is quickly passed on. This beauty editor is a big fan of Jo malone’s online boutique where the perfumes are helpfully separated into categories such as spicy, woody, citrus and floral with advice for creating a custom made fragrance by wearing different combinations. however if you’re completely stuck she has yet to meet any woman who strongly objects to the fresh and invigorating smell of Clarin’s eau Dynamisante. Perfume isn’t always the cheapest option with some scents above the £100 mark so if you are aiming for a more budget friendly gift , check to see if someone’s favourite scent has a matching deodorant or bath product which enables them to ‘layer’ their fragrance. When choosing a perfume for yourself, take your time. Don’t try to test too many at once or complete confusion may result! avoid instant decisions too. Perfumes develop over time so something you weren’t sure about at fi rst sniff could turn out to be a winner 15 minutes later or vice versa.

Noel Fielding is about to embark on his first solo tour in five years. The comedian, who thanks to his work on The Mighty Boosh, Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy and Never Mind the Buzzcocks, has an enormously loyal following, is starring in a new show, simply entitled, “An Evening with Noel Fielding.” Featuring Noel’s inimitable blend of stand-up, animation, music and appearances by some of his best-loved characters, including The Moon, The Dark Side of the Moon and Fantasy Man, it’s a blinding show. as Noel himself puts it, “you’d be a fool to miss out. Come along, bring your Nan. Fancy dress optional.”
“ It’s like being in a dream. It’s a real buzz.”
The critics have been queuing up to praise this comedian who can be summed up by all those adjectives beginning with C: charismatic, comic, charming, compelling. The Daily Telegraph calls Noel, “a comedy wunderkind”, while The Guardian has described his work as, “a neo-psychedelic riot of mirth.” and Phil Jupitus, no less, labels him, “a Gothic George Best.”
Because it’s so deeply original and innovative, Noel’s comedy can divide people. But he thinks that the infectious nature of his stand-up show can help to win over the agnostics. “Some people might think they’re allergic to you, but if they come to a live show and see everyone is laughing, it’s hard to say that it’s not funny. It was the same with the Boosh. Sceptics were convinced when they came to our shows.” “As a stand-up, you spend all day being nervous. But as soon as you step onto the stage and get the first laugh, it’s magic time. It’s like being in a dream. It’s a real buzz.”
The five years away from the live arena have only whetted Noel’s appetite for stand-up. he can’t wait to get back in front of an audience. The performer, who has spent the last few years occupied by the meticulously produced, semianimated e4 show, Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy Comedy, begins by underlining that nothing beats the rush generated by live work. “The problem with TV is that it takes years to make, and after a while you can’t remember what it’s like to tell a joke and get a laugh from it.” “The great thing about live comedy is that it cuts out the middle men – all those TV producers and directors. It takes out everything that gets in the way, so it’s just you and the audience. It’s a really pure set-up.”

Noel, who for many years has been a highly popular team captain on BBC2's widely-loved and very long-running pop quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, is also relishing the prospect of touring the country. “It’s great,” he enthuses. “You get to visit all these nice places you’ve never been to before. When you arrive at a lot of towns, you just go, ‘wow!’” The comedian, who will be joined on stage in “An Evening with Noel Fielding” by the loose stylings of his brother michael Fielding (best known as Naboo and Smooth from The Mighty Boosh) and the physical lunacy of Tom meeten (who plays andy Warhol in Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy), proceeds to let us in on the plot for “An Evening with Noel Fielding.” …continued…

“The Chicken Man was more of a gamble, but people really seem to like him. They’re also really enjoying a section where Tom plays Antonio Banderas and Michael plays Hawkeye, the living embodiment of the tennis line judge. It’s great to think up these ideas and then watch them take flight.” The comedian attempts to sum up the style of the show. “It's so abstract. It's like you turn the radio dial, and something random comes on. You’re not quite sure what it is, but you warm to it.”
“The first half is set in a cabaret club,” he reveals. “Then I get kidnapped from my own show, and in the second half the rest of the characters have to find me. I'll be playing other characters during the second half. It becomes like a play. It's a sort of farce.” The show promises a typically uplift ing variety of disparate elements. “That's why I've called it ‘An Evening with Noel Fielding’, because it's not something I'd usually do,” the comedian explains. “It's more like something Barry Humphries would do.”
as an example, Noel says he’s been working up the character of Chicken man. “He's like a fi gure from a Jodorowsky Spaghetti Western. He’s half man, half chicken. He has to fi ght a bandit, and he's got Tourette’s. He's like a cross between A Streetcar Named Desire and Foghorn Leghorn. He keeps flipping in and out of madness.”
So what does the comic hope that audiences will take away from ‘An Evening with Noel Fielding’? “I hope they have a really good time,” Noel declares. “I hope they laugh their heads off. I've always been very concerned not to sell people short. But the only danger is that the show ends up as long as the film Gandhi!” ever philosophical, Noel carries on that, “I suppose if it doesn’t work, I'll have to do something else. What would I do? MIA’S MoUNTAIN MISSIoN
Former editor and friend to Mayhem!, Mia Habens, is gearing up to swap her laptop for her walking boots to take part in a gruelling 10-day climb for charity. ascending to a lung-bursting 5,895 metres above sea level, mia will be joining a team of around 30 climbers to take on the world’s highest freestanding mountain – mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania – in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for the hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance. Taking place on 7th February 2015, but with training already underway, mia’s certainly looking forward to the challenge: “I love a nice walk as much as the next person, but this will easily be the biggest physical challenge of my life! I’m an asthmatic with dodgy knees and no mountaineering experience, but this is such a worthwhile local charity, who was I to say no!” “Every day the Air Ambulance crew provide response to road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses, and many other incidents throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Plus, the more money we raise, the longer we can keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.” each climber has an individual fundraising target of at least £3,500, but the team is hoping to achieve many times this amount and will be putting their fundraising knowledge to the test, with company branded t-shirts for the climb, cake sales and much more. mia added: “I’ve taken part in many fundraising events before, both at work and personally, but this feels like the ultimate challenge. Once I’ve reached my fundraising target I can actually get my head around climbing the mountain!” Mia is looking for local businesses to sponsor a ‘patch’ on her summit t-shirt. For as little as £100 you can have your logo displayed on the shirt she will wear to get to the summit and all the photos taken of there will have your branding on for any press releases or promotional literature after the event.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to make a personal donation, Mia’s fundraising page can be found at: uk.virginmoneygiving. com/MiaKilimanjaro. For more information about the Hampshire and isle of White Air Ambulance, go to: www.hiow-airambulance.org.uk

WINE a standard glass of wine contains a huge 126 calories and is just over two units of alcohol so a bottle could be about 315 calories. Drinking one glass of wine a week would cost you a whopping £182.00 a year.
SPIrITS One double spirit with a mixer is two units of alcohol (about half the recommended daily allowance for a male). That’s a massive 173 calories in just one glass and drinking one of these a week would cost you around £208.00 a year. adding the mixer makes your drink last longer but also adds to the calories you’re packing away. 30 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
BEEr AND CIDEr a pint of anything ale related is around two units of alcohol. This is pretty much the recommended daily allowance for women and equates to a ridiculous 215 calories. Drinking just one pint a week might mean the most fatty points, but would only cost £130 a year. If you make it a shandy it’s going to be less alcohol units for you.
ALCoPoPS One bottle of this sweet stuff is about 1.4 units but still crams in a huge 198 calories. So after six of these ‘easy drinkers’, you would have had 1,188 calories which is over half the RDa for a female (and probably very drunk!) and just one of these a week in your daily shop will cost you £130 a year.
BREAK THE HABIT If you’re used to pulling the ring pull back or twisting the cork at a certain time of the day, break it by doing something else. PACE YOURSELF Drink a glass of water or a soft drink in between each alcoholic drink. DROP AN ABV That’s Alcohol By Volume, so simply swap your usual drink for one with less alcohol content. Check the sides of the bottle because these often have fewer calories too!

to be, or kNot to be!
TAkE A BoW (TIE) everyone knows bow ties are timeless. That’s the only explanation we can think of as to why not one but two incarnations of Doctor Who have worn one. Before matt Smith’s eleventh incarnation of the Time Lord made them ‘cool’ with his fi rst appearance in The Eleventh Hour (indeed, sales of them rose in the immediate aftermath), Patrick Troughton’s second doctor had already worn one in all of his appearances as well.
shoelace or ‘bunny ears’ knot – which handily means that should you fi nd yourself invited to be dapper you can take care of your fi nest polished pair of formal shoes and best tie at once before hitting the town. handy eh? and if you happen to be a paediatrician you’ll fi nd the bow tie doubly useful – the little ones in your care won’t be able to nab it off your neck, for starters!
Troughton’s tie of choice was more often than not a simple black one with spots, pre-tied and safety-pinned to the collar of a crumpled shirt in line with his ‘cosmic hobo’ style appearance. Smith was more inspired by the costume harrison Ford wears as Indiana Jones during the ‘teaching’ segments of Raiders Of The Lost Ark . The history of the bow tie stretches far beyond 1966. It’s popularity is supposed to have fi rst gained prominence during the 17th century Prussian Wars, where Croatian mercenaries used scarves to hold together the openings of their shirts. This was in turn adopted/adapted by the French, who gave the new fashion the name cravat (the French word for ‘Croat’, after the men who’d originated the trend). It then gave rise to the tie/bow tie, which means we’re back where we started in a sense. If you do opt to tie a bow tie on your own, fi rstly well done. Secondly, it’s most common to tie it by means of a mayhemmaG |
TIE FIGHTEr moving away from the bow tie, you could also look into alternatives – the ascot tie is a variation on the cravat, and there’s also a bolo tie should you want to really stand out! you might also know it as a bola or shoestring tie. more often than not they are indeed made of something similar to shoelaces, held together with aiglets (metal tags). If you really want to get creative you could improvise your
own, too. Fridge magnets, Christmas tree decorations and coins have all previously been used for that very purpose! If you were a Boy Scout you might also have fond memories of the neckerchief, the triangle-shaped sliver of fabric fastened with a woggle. Don’t tell us you didn’t secretly love it! Plus they’re part of the standard uniform for the US Navy and have been since the american Civil War. Possibly handy for ‘black tie’ events as well. although further research reveals that actually ‘black tie’ should be changed to ‘black bow tie’ alongside a white shirt, waistcoat, dinner suit and black shoes. Well, the whole thing does stretch back to the edwardian era so a little decorum’s expected. Indeed it was only in the years following the Second World War that what we’d now call ‘formal wear’ became something reserved for special occasions rather than standard evening attire – you might remember Stephen Fry’s General melchett sporting a variation for his date with the lovely ‘Georgina’ during the Major Star episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. If you can, though, try to avoid his elementary mistake. While he does look rather fashionable, Sir anthony Cecil hogmanay melchett takes a shine to a man in drag. Do be sure to check your intended lovely lady is actually a lady before you dress to kill (metaphorically)!

get set, go! If you’re looking to get fit, why not simply run from the problem? Not in the sense of ignoring it in the hope it’ll go away, but literally picking up a pair of running shoes and whizzing off ! Whether you’re simply looking to test yourself or go competitive, running takes discipline – but the pounds will soon fall off if losing weight’s the name of the game.
Written by cHris morLeY
So, set off at a canter as you join us for our morning run – to be frank we need the exercise. See you at the fi nish line!
on The
rUN SUPErCALIFrAGILISTICAUSTrALoPETHICUS amazingly running is widely believed to have been a human instinct for around four and a half million years! Our ape-like prehistoric cousin the australopethicus is the fi rst recorded species to develop the ability to walk upright on two legs, as humans do! But how did our cave-dwelling forebears use it? The most likely explanation is that it was a big part of the process of hunting – chasing the intended prey until it simply became too worn out, the ideal time to strike. Which might lead us to ask what the best running technique might be, even though we most likely have no need to chase our food these days! The most popular seems to be an upright posture coupled with a good forward lean – the science of running dictates that this means you’ll make good use of the ‘spring mechanism’ of your foot, allowing for a faster start. and as long as you’re relaxed before a big race, your chances of suffering an injury are sufficiently reduced! If you’re any good at maths, there’s an easy way to work out how fast you’re moving. Should you be focused enough to be able to count your steps per second (or ‘cadence’ as it’s also known) and multiply that by your stride length/rate, which increases the more you pump your arms up and down as you go in time with the rest of your body. In general sprinting you’ll need a mix of short/ fast strides, though if you’re going long-distance there’s more room for variation. and it’s good for you too! 36 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
rUNNIN’ AWAy Of course, if you’ve listened to Sly and The Family Stone’s advice, you’ll be careful not to go ‘wearin’ out your shoes’ while ‘runnin’ away, to get away, ha ha, ha ha’. Not very nice of the seventies funkmasters to laugh at you for your efforts, we know. But it’ll all be worth it in the end. Running has several crucial health benefits, which you should consider before putting it off. your cardiovascular health will be much better off, as will your bone density/ strength and cholesterol levels. It’s also good for your mental state, with neurons boosted in your brain. The state of euphoria often known as ‘runner’s high’ might well be why a good pavement-pounding session is often recommended as a good course of treatment for sufferers of depression and recovering addicts. With the physical and mental plus points of dragging yourself out for a run often combining to slow the ageing process – your mind and joints may well feel younger and more flexible! Little wonder it’s been a key part of both the ancient and modern Olympics. We don’t blame you if you don’t want to try the original marathon, though – for starters you’d need a ticket to Greece. Starting at marathon (site of the Battle of marathon in 490 BC), you’ll then need to make your way to athens. That’s quite a round trip, which the messenger Pheidippides is said to have made by running – just to inform his fellow countrymen the ancient Greeks had beaten the Persians in battle. No wonder he could only just about announce ‘we’ve won’ before keeling over. a lesson in not overdoing it if ever there was one!

TABATA TrAINING This is high intensity interval training (hIIT) and, although it might seem like a piece of cake, it’s actually pretty tough, but has plenty of benefits. Tabata training consists of performing a series of up to eight of the same strength empowering exercises, like squats, push-ups, pull-ups, crunches or sit-ups, for 20 seconds with a break of no more than 10 seconds between sets – until you complete a 4-minute workout. “I’m a woman now, I know what I want” Only Human is undeniably pop while managing to challenge convention in its own way. It’s thoughtful, considered, celebratory and hugely uplifting. Heavy on pop bangers, this is also a record that encourages the listener to tune into the albums overall message of overwhelming optimism. “I feel, for me, it’s my best work for many reasons. Looking back on everything that I’ve experienced personally, I think Only Human is a record that says ‘have fun, we’re only human, fight on when things go bad because it’s going to be fine again’. I’m a woman now, I know what I want, I know the songs are great and I’m excited for people to hear it. I’m not unsure of myself anymore and I guess that reflects in the album.” Only Human continues the cannon of Cheryl’s successful solo singing career, which includes four number one singles and two chart topping albums. In July 2014 the debut single from Only Human, Crazy Stupid Love, not only soared straight to number one with over 100,000 copies sold, but made chart history when Cheryl became only the third woman in British history to have four solo No.1s. Back in the charts with her new single I Don’t Care showcasing a dancier sound, “it has one of those feel free, have fun, don’t really give a sh*t mayhemmaG |
vibes and that comes across in the video too”, Cheryl explains, “it was fun!” It’s a very different feel to Crazy Stupid Love – “the album is pop but there’s a lot of different styles including a couple of R&B sounding tracks. The industry isn’t like it used to be where you had just one body of work and everything sounded similar, so I wanted to have fun with different sounds.” Cheryl couldn’t be happier and doesn’t give critics the time of day, “you can’t live your life worrying about what other people think or say about you, although I do hope that people enjoy what I do, I can’t make that the sole focus of my life.” She’s forsaken the make up, too! “It’s quite liberating”, Cheryl reveals, “in one scene I’m still wearing make-up from the night before, like when you wake up and you’ve forgotten to take it off and in another scene I’ve got no make-up at all.”

mayhem! meets… and what of her own musical make-up? “It’s the kind of music that I grew up listening to and who I am influenced by. Obviously I’ve been in Girls Aloud for 10 years and pop has been a big part of my career so it’s important. I wanted to include a little bit of everything: me, pop and hopeful messages which I hope come through.” Shaking things up, working with different people and sounds is perhaps the key to staying relevant as an artist, “I think keeping it interesting for yourself is important – if you’re not interested yourself you’re never going to interest your fans. Keeping an ear to the ground and going with your gut instinct is more important what is going on around you.” and it seems to be paying off, “yeah, I’m extremely happy with the record” even her television work feeds nicely into things, “It’s an extension of what I do now and it’s still music related – it’s helping someone else and giving them an opportunity to have what I have”, Cheryl continues, “look at One Direction and Cher Lloyd, people like that – people who have come from the X-Factor – to be part of someones journey like that is just as much fun as doing it yourself.” With maturity comes a wider philosophical awareness and this comes across on the album, with an opening excerpt from philosopher alan Watts. But how did you discover him? “A friend of mine played a snip-it of a speech he made I was really blown away – I really related to it”, she goes on to explain, “a lot of young people online are confused about life and which directions to take – I felt it was a powerful message to put out there so I included a small section at the beginning of the album.”
“I was really blown away”
So, on a philosophical note, what does the future hold for Cheryl? management? “It’s definitely something I am interested in and would love to look at in the future, but this year I’m just focusing on what is going on right now, you never know what can change.” Grab Cheryl’s new album, Only Human, OUT NOW!

doN’t be siLLY, WraP tHat WiLLY!
Do you ever feel like you have a lot to say but don’t know how? Here’s a chance to learn the facts and put your knowledge into action to help yourself and others. World Aids Day is the perfect opportunity to be a part of a great cause.
Creating awareness isn’t just about telling people that it’s World aids Day, it’s about helping others understand the necessity of this day. World aids Day brings awareness about safe sex and it isn’t something to shy away from. hIV is most commonly passed on via sex without a condom or by sharing infected needles, syringes or other injecting drug equipment. Over 90,000 people live in the UK with hIV and most of them don’t know it. World aids Day brings hIV to the forefront of everyone’s mind with honesty, kindness and most importantly a laugh. While fundraising you can enjoy yourself 48 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
and help out an important cause. There are activities from crazy cake baking competitions to the silly-sideways sponsored runs. you can fundraise any day of the year in whatever way you like but the 1st December is all about making people aware of hIV and being safe. most people are unaware that they’ve contracted the disease because they haven’t been checked. It’s a simple procedure where all you have to do is give a saliva sample. From a young age we’ve been told the same line ‘better to be safe than sorry’ alongside ‘don’t take candy from a stranger’. So it’s time to be safe
and get a quick check, there’s no week- long wait for the results and as soon as you know you can get all the support you need. Grab yourself the most stylish accessory around, red crystal bling in the form of a brooch to remind the world to always be safe. This is a worldwide opportunity to unite in the fi ght against hIV and to follow it on by raising awareness of hIV all year round. as a last note, here’s another phrase to remember from your teen years: ‘Don’t be silly, wrap that willy!’

The ArT of MAsTering A
DINNEr PArTy Don’t you just love chopping, measuring, sizzling? Cooking goes hand in hand with throwing dinner parties, be it with friends, family or colleagues, it can be quite a challenge. Mayhem! took the time to put together a little dinner party know-how. Chop chop!
DrESS CoDE STrESS The first step to a successful dinner party is this: don’t invite too many guests. you’ve probably heard before that “the more the merrier”, but keep the numbers down until you’re a seasoned pro! Planning the menu and preparing for fewer guests will reduce the amount of impending stress, and hopefully allow room for you to even enjoy the experience!
as well as providing an invitation, including time and place, think about how you’d like your guests to dress. you may want to theme your dinner party or make it formal with black ties and cocktail dresses. To avoid anyone arriving in their pyjamas expecting pizza and a movie let your guest know! If you want them to dress smart, tell them! It’s much better than having a dinner party with uncomfortable and embarrassed over or under-dressed guests.
DINNEr ATMoSPHErE Dinner parties make an excellent opportunity for your creativity to unfold. If you are going for an Italian theme, play some Italy-inspired music in the background. If you’re making a curry, dress your table with colourful candles and flowers. There are no limits, so go all out with decorations and themes and make it night to remember.
The most essential part is, of course, the menu. It needs thorough planning and preparation. It might even be nice to organise some simple appetisers, but you don’t have to do everything at the same time. Consider preparing elements that will keep a day or two before. It’s great to try new things, but be sure to cook a meal that you have done before and you’re confident preparing, otherwise you might be ordering pizza after all!
So that’s it gourmets! Get into the kitchen and dive into the fun world of partying over dinner! Bon appetit! 50 maYHem! | winter 2014/15

a never ending winding stream of stalls selling everything from tree decorations to gardening shoes, you’re able to lose yourself (literally) in all things merry and all things Christmas.
BATH Bath is a beautiful city, full of elaborate buildings, the famous Bath spas and of course, the annual Christmas market. Full of warmth, food and traditional stands, you are sure to find something for everyone.
SoUTHAMPToN Open from the 21st November, Southampton Christmas market offers a wide range of traditional stalls. With the festive lights, delicious food and even a stage available for local groups or carol singers, this is the place to be for some festive cheer.
BrIGHToN Let’s face it – it’s here. Christmas was basically here as soon as Halloween was over. As soon as the last of the tricksters retreated back to their homes with chocolate smothered faces and sticky hands. Then all of a sudden the 1st November rolled around the corner and it was Christmas adverts filling up the X-Factor breaks, deals popping up in supermarkets, rain splattering down the windows and people started to wonder where the John Lewis Christmas ad was. But it’s not all fun and games... 52 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
The dreaded Christmas shopping! Where desperate shoppers push their way through crowded shopping centres, where you get bashed with bags and end up crying in the corner wondering why you didn’t start Christmas shopping earlier. however, whilst Christmas gift buying can be an unwelcome thought, there are a number of lovely Christmas markets available in hampshire and the surrounding areas. you can slowly detox away the shopping centre blues and amble around enjoying the festive ambiance with a mulled wine, or two. Mayhem! is here with a list of firm favourites!
Located in Churchill Square, the traditional German market is already open for business and will remain so until Christmas eve! This seaside town Christmas market hosts stunningly decorated stalls which sell perfect Christmas gifts as well as the traditional German food, insanely tasty crepes and a never ending supply of delicious mulled wine. So go and absorb as much Christmas cheer as you can, and create some memories with family and friends while enjoying our regions festive markets, filling yourself with mouthwatering Christmas goodies and drinking as much mulled wine as you like – it’s Christmas after all.

AUTISM
Musicians For Autism is an exciting new Havant-based community project, aiming to raise awareness of autism/ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders). With its first compilation album Infinity’s Door due for release, Mayhem! takes a look at the story behind the record and what it’s helping with! Check out www.musiciansforautism.org
THE MUSIC artists ranging from Peach and The New Beats and the men From montgomery to earl Webb and Karla Bell have donated songs, which are interspersed with readings written by parents of autistic children or in some cases autistic people themselves, some of which are read by the authors. 54 maYHem! | winter 2014/15
among these readings are Laura miles’ Just Me, Sue Norris’ I Am Sue and alison mcKnight’s Why Am I So Different? – and the process of recording them has benefited the authors and everyone involved with the album. We caught up with Bob Ross, the man behind the business side of the whole operation – “I have seen with my own eyes the positive and life-changing effect that a combination of specialist help, together with an effective local support group, can have on a youngster who has been diagnosed with ASD. This positive change seemed so palpable to me, especially as someone from outside the immediate family. In such a short time I could detect an obvious and almost exponential rise in capabilities, understanding and communication abilities. These enhanced qualities and functions were attended with many smiles, and much happiness. In short, this was an absolute joy for me to behold, and kindled in me a wish to do something to help.
So I asked some of the most talented people I know if they might be interested in writing and donating a recording of a song towards an album aimed at raising awareness and funds for local Autism support groups. Once underway, the project to make an album seemed like such a creative opportunity to also invite people either diagnosed with, or impacted by ASD, to express themselves in their own words. We’ve recorded these insights and interspersed them with the songs on the album as ‘readings’. We hope you enjoy our debut album, Infi nity’s Door, as much as we’ve all enjoyed making it.”
THE CoNDITIoN autism is officially categorised as a neurodevelopmental disorder – meaning an impairment in the growth or development of the brain. Symptoms generally begin to show at around the age of six months, becoming known in various ways as any child with the condition grows up. Struggles with social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviour are most common, including a lack of eye contact and a failure to recognise changes in emotional or facial expression. Music might just be the key to answering to all of that. So hit play!
