Yo ho ho...

When the summer sun shines and the warm breeze drifts through the Mayhem! studio I want nothing more than to crack a beer and hit the beach. Sadly, for most of us, work must go on, but it’s not all bad. We’re here with our usual mix of fun and frolics to keep you entertained while the boss is out or your lecturer is busy playing solitaire. The Mad Hatter himself, Johnny Depp, drops in for an exclusive natter about the latest in the world of wonderlands and someone called Alice. Who the … is Alice, anyway?

volunteering environmental

Local charities are constantly putting on all kinds of volunteering events. Helping to clean up a local park or nature reserve is a great way to do your part and make some friends.

written By Craig Sheldon

Fundraising If you’re a little more serious about doing some charity work then fundraising is a perfect way to help a charity close to you. Whether you’ve been personally affected by a disease or condition or just think they’re a worthy cause, putting together a fundraising scheme is another great way to give back. You could get sponsored for a sporting event or organise one yourself, or if that seems like too much sweating, you could put on your own local bake sale instead.

abroad The very word ‘volunteering’ can send a lot of people running for the hills. And while it’s true that most of us are too busy to commit fully to any particular cause, there are some ways to lend a helping hand without exhausting yourself or breaking the bank.

Homeless sHelter We can all spare a few quid for the homeless now and again but how about spending the afternoon cooking up a hearty meal to take down to the local homeless shelter. Homeless shelters rely on volunteers for support and your contribution will go a long way in helping out. Lasagne’s, pasta bakes, casserole’s and mac and cheese are all good options. 8

MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Food bank Dropping off some tinned food on your way to work or to meet friends is another easy way to help those in need without taking up much time or money. So have a rummage in the back of your cupboards and see if there’s anything you could do without. I mean who needs five tins of chilli, really?

There are also plenty of opportunities abroad for anyone looking to see the world while helping their fellow man. There are lots of fairly cheap volunteering packages to sign up for all across the globe, from India to Africa and Mexico to Turkey ranging anywhere from a week to six months or more. Activities include helping to teach English to children, building shelters, sports coaching and nature conservation.

tHe beneFits oF animal sHelters volunteering

It’s not just humans that need your help. Rescue shelters always welcome aid from anyone wanting to help tend to the various animals that require looking after. You could help clean out some cages, (If you’ve got the stomach) feed the animals or even just spend a few hours playing with some cute cuddly wuddly’s. Get in touch with your local shelter and see what you could do.

Volunteering doesn’t just affect those you help. There are plenty of rewards for you in return that you might not get anywhere else. Volunteering is a great way to not only meet new people, but also gain new and invaluable skills that are useful in your everyday life. These charitable acts also look great on your C.V and will put you above other applicants when applying for a job or internship.

oF Fun Climbing ACTiviTieS for The whole fAmily Climbing is a great way to get fitter and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Fortunately, the local area has lots of climbing activities to try out, meaning you really are spoilt for choice.

So what are you waiting for? After all, nothing beats that sense of achievement you get after scaling a 30ft rock face!

go ape, itcHen valley Unless you’ve been living under a rock for years, you have probably heard of Go Ape and their tree top high ropes courses. With a course as close as Itchen Valley Country Park, Go Ape is definitely one to consider. There is a minimum height restriction of 1.4m (4ft7”) and a maximum weight of 20.5 stone. Participants can be as young as ten, but even the younger ones can have a go at the Tree Top Junior Course if they don’t quite measure up! Prices start from £25 per head for this Tarzanswinging, net-scrambling, ladder-climbing activity.

calsHot activity centre, calsHot spit For a slightly warmer climb, you might try Calshot Activity Centre located at Calshot Spit, Southampton. Prices start from £7.50 off peak per person to climb their indoor walls, but any novice climber will have to be signed in by a member. That aside, it is still a great place for those new to climbing or even those looking to hone their already existing skills, even if it is a bit further afield. They also offer equipment hire should you need it.

rock up, WHiteley For a less traditional climb, Rock Up in Whiteley is a great alternative. Unique, brightly coloured walls with innovative designs make Rock Up both fun and engaging. The minimum age for this is four years old and pricing starts from £8 off peak for a session that lasts about an hour and a half. However, Rock Up does operate on a pre-booking basis, so you’ll need to plan ahead if you want to have a go.

boatHouse 4 & action stations portsmoutH Historic dockyard Boathouse 4 is the Historic Dockyard’s newest visitor attraction. Recently opened in October, this breath-taking building houses a working boat yard, an exhibition on historic small boats of the Royal Navy and a mast climbing experience. The mast climbing experience has a minimum age of six and a minimum height restriction of 1.1m. For £6 per person or £20 for family of four, you can climb both sides of the 7.8m purpose built mast and even traverse the yard arm (if you’re brave enough!). Every climber receives a certificate as proof of their climb, as well. Also, you don’t need a dockyard ticket to access Boathouse 4, making the mast climbing experience both fun and inexpensive. 10 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Boost your spirits with a fab new summer fragrance – we’re loving DKNY’s Be Delicious Electric Bright Crush which is sweet without being cloying with notes of Bergamot and Cassis. Alternatively try Dad’s Garden – Chamomile and Honeysuckle, for a scent that screams summer from Lush.

Clarins new Ombre Iridescente is a waterproof cream eyeshadow designed to stay put even in the pool which comes in four gorgeous shimmering shades, while their Fix’ Make-Up is a refreshing rose scented mist containing aloe vera that sets make up to help prevent it sliding off in the heat.

A facial moisturiser with high SPF is a must – a tanned face today isn’t worth the wrinkles tomorrow! Million Dollar Moisturiser by Lush has an SPF 30 and flattering reflective pigments. £32.50 www.lush.co.uk.

Happy Holidays If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off abroad for a week of sun, sea and sand then you’ll want to look your best without lugging half the John Lewis beauty hall along. Think imaginatively, consider what you can’t live without and what you can (generally more than you imagine) and do some basic prep beforehand. 12 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Clinique’s Stay Matte Universal puts paid to shiny noses (and chins and foreheads) without the need to pile on layers of make-up. £26.00 www.clinique.co.uk.

A spray tan is our must have salon treatment before a break away (along with a Shellac pedi). It instantly puts you in holiday mode and with a tanned face you can get away with minimal make up. For a holiday day time look, a tinted moisturizer with SPF, lip gloss (don’t bother travelling with bullet lipsticks which often melt in the heat) and waterproof mascara should be plenty. If you want a heavier base for nights out an all in one foundation and

powder compact will help keep your make up bag minimal and a dark powder eyeshadow can double up as eyeliner for smoky eyes. However if there’s a product you absolutely swear by then by all means, make the space – we recommend Photofi nish Foundation Primer (Smashbox, £25.50) and eyelash curlers. Whether it’s a gold shimmer spray or heating tongs, making an effort for evenings out is part of the fun of a holiday.

get UP and go!

GuIDe tO travelling

solo it’s summer again and you’ve got itchy feet, but your friends need to save for a mortgage/new car/Xbox? it doesn’t matter, go anyway! Travelling solo is one of the most beneficial things you can do. To help you get started, we have some useful tips for you on how to hit the road, solo.

blend in

take time Getting away is all about slowing down from your daily grind, and the great thing about travelling solo is that you don’t have to stick to anyone’s agenda but your own. Give yourself three days: the fi rst to get over jetlag, the second to do organisational stuff like exchange money, maybe get a travelcard etc., and on the third day you can get exploring. You’ll be less overwhelmed if you give yourself time to settle in. 18 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Familiarise Travelling by yourself can be very scary at fi rst – you don’t know your surroundings and the only one you can rely on is yourself. If you want to ease in, don’t go to all the popular sights fi rst thing, but look for places you’d hang out at home: a bookshop, a little café, a park. You can also bring things that make you feel comfortable, be it your favourite music on your iPod or a favourite book to lose yourself in.

Another great thing about hitting the road on your own is that you can pretend you’re local. If you’re alone, people won’t recognise you as a tourist (unless you’re wearing an ‘I love NY’ sweater while in New York) and just think you’re one of them. Make sure you know where you’re going before you leave your hotel so you don’t have to walk around looking at Google Maps when you’re out and about. If you do have to ask for directions, lie a little if you don’t want strangers to know you’re alone: ask if they can point you in the right direction and that you’re meeting a friend.

stay sober As much as holidays and cocktails o’clock seem synonymous, it’s advisable to hold yourself back when it comes to booze. Travelling solo means that you’re the only one who’s going look after you, and that’s going be really hard if you’re wasted and don’t remember where your hotel is. Know your own limits: stick to what you know and then stop. You’ll thank yourself later in the evening!

tHor’s Well CAPE PERPETUA (USA) Sat intimidatingly on the Oregon coast is the infamous Thor’s Well. It’s been described as a ‘gaping sinkhole’

The world is a big, wonderful and weird place, there are thousands of locations that embody the bizarre and the ambiguous. Mayhem! looks at the strangest places you’ve probably never heard of, and will definitely want to visit.

that appears bottomless despite the constant, unbroken stream of water that falls into it. It’s understood that it’s most likely only twenty feet deep and is an amazing sight to behold. Despite the risk it poses to visiting

tourists and locals (survival is highly unlikely should anyone get swept into the oceanic turbulence), it’s extremely popular among photographers who flock there to capture it’s unique beauty.

cat island TASHIROJIMA (JAPAN) It’s as fascinating as it sounds, and trust me, you’ll want to go there unless you’re seriously allergic to feline’s. The island of Tashirojima during the Edo period (1603–1868) was used for the breeding and raising of silk-worms which produced textiles. Mice are natural predators of silk worms, but cats are natural predators of mice, resulting in a surge of kitties that roamed the island keeping the mouse population at bay. Overtime, the unneutered cat population flourished, eventually outweighing the human population. This doesn’t pose too much of a problem however, since locals believe cats bring good fortune and the influx of tourists means the island is doing great fi nancially. 20 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Fly geyser NEVADA, (USA) Adjacent to the Black Rock Desert, the stunningly man made Fly Geyser sits on the edge of private land as a result of an energy company in 1964 drilling way down into geothermal waters. Today, it’s a scalding hot fountain that grows a little higher every year due to mineral build-up, its unusual green and red hues are a result of Thermophilic Algae. Unfortunately, the owner of the land has prevented trespassers from getting too close with a locked gate, but it’s large enough to be seen from a dirt track nearby.

sedlec ossuary KUTNA HORA (CzECH REPUBLIC) If you’re a horror fan, then this one is defi nitely for you. Not only is the place itself the epitome of spookiness, but the backstory is pretty incredible too. The Sedlec Ossuary is a small Roman Catholic church comprised majorly of human bones. In the 13th century, the abbot at the time returned from his travels to Palestine with holy soil which he sprinkled sporadically onto the graveyard surrounding the area. As a result, it became a highly sought after place to be buried amongst aristocracy of Central Europe. Eventually, the space could not accommodate the number of burials, thus the bones of 40,000 people were exhumed and stored in the chapel. The site attracts many tourists, in particular its enormous chandelier which allegedly contains at least one of every type of bone in the human body.

Fingal’s cave SCOTLAND (UK) now for somewhere a little closer to home. At 72 feet tall and 270 feet deep, Fingal’s sea cave is so visually astounding that it’s become a legend amongst the irish and Scottish Celts, who call it ‘the Cave of Melody.’ the tale goes that the irish giant ‘Fionn mac Cumhaill’ built a bridge from Fingal’s Cave to the Giant’s Causeway in Scotland in order to fight his equally enormous rival, Benandonner. the cave is made up of the hexagonal columns of basalt, that make up its interior walls. you can visit the cave by taking a cruise which travels past it, but the best way is by hiking right into it so you can get a closer look at its stunning walls.

Heart broken

(and be okay)

So many songs, poems and plays have been written about love and heartbreak. It’s something that almost everybody will experience at some point – and it’s never nice. having your heart broken is excruciating and devastating, but unfortunately there isn’t a lot you can do about it. at first. written By hannah gooding

tHe mourning period A breakup does feel like mourning, because it is. It’s the death of a relationship. You and your significant other made something together, fed it, watered it, and now it’s gone. So by all means cry as much as you can. It’s okay if you don’t eat for a day or two (just remember to drink lots of water. If anything so you can cry more). It’s alright if you don’t want to see anybody and spends hours mindlessly scrolling through Twitter. That’s fi ne. You’re doing fi ne. Mourning doesn’t last forever.

tHe lack oF control tHe initial sHock All of a sudden the person who was your ‘is’ is now your ‘was’. It’s a shock to the system and plunges you into a strange inconsolable state – something that might actually be new to you. How the hell are you expected to deal with the weird bouts of crying hysterically, not eating and being reminded of them by literally everything? At the moment, you don’t have to. You don’t even need to understand what’s happened (although this doesn’t mean acting as if you weren’t broken up at all, I’m sorry but you were). Try your hardest not to contact them at all. Honestly, this will help. 22 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Being the dumpee and not the dumper is an entirely different experience. It hurts so much more because you have had something taken from you against your will – you may have wanted the relationship to carry on, but the other person didn’t, so now you don’t have that option. Sadly that’s just a bittersweet part of being in a relationship with another person: you have to share and compromise, even when you don’t want to. Perhaps you can’t talk to them anymore, or maybe you don’t even want to (that’s probably a good sign for now). Not having control over the breakup does mean, however, that you have control over yourself now – you aren’t committed to one other person anymore and are living for yourself. That’s the most important thing to have control over, too.

coming out tHe otHer side After a break up, you’re really not expected to jump back on the relationship horse after a week. Or even a month. All you can do is feel your feelings and give it time. The length of a relationship doesn’t matter; your reaction shows how you felt about the person. So if anything, it’s a good thing you’re feeling this hurt because it means you must have really loved that person. That’s nothing to be ashamed of! If you loved once, you’ll love again. Humans are built to love. You will feel okay eventually. You’ll eat a full meal, you’ll socialise, you’ll fi nd someone else. There’s seven billion people on this planet, so even if only 1% fancy you, that’s still 71,250,000 people who do. Those are good odds.

Silent treatMent!

WHat are tHe symptoms? Being ghosted often leaves the victim feeling confused, hurt and often times, pretty humiliated. Even if there was no ‘label,’ a couple could be texting back and forth, dating, or even having a relationship before one party suddenly fades out without a clear break. Whatever the situation, being ghosted can leave the victim feeling powerless.

WHy do people gHost? There are many reasons that someone might decide to disappear from your life, often they might have met someone else and can’t bring themselves admit their new love interest, or they might just have realised the relationship is not for them and would prefer not to tell you. This makes the fade easier for them.

is it ever okay to gHost someone?

maybe it’s happened to WHat is you, or maybe you’re guilty gHosting? Heart-throb Elvis Presley warbled of this time old relationship about ghosting in his 1962 hit Return trend. ghosting is nothing to Sender. In short, it’s the ultimate silent treatment. The term has been new, but no less heartcirculating as the defi nition for breaking for the one being effectively ending a romantic or ghosted. This guide looks platonic relationship by cutting off all contact with the former partner at what it is, how to deal or friend and ignoring any efforts with it, and if it’s ever okay. to communicate. 24 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Yes. If the relationship is toxic or causing emotional or physical abuse, then it’s totally okay to get out without a complimentary coffee chat. You can look for the signs of a toxic relationship at thisisabuse.direct.gov.uk, and if you feel in danger of leaving an abusive partner, contact friends, family or police. If you feel a friend is at risk or too scared to leave the relationship, encourage them to phone the National Domestic Violence Helpline.

can it be avoided? Unfortunately, there’s no predicting whether someone will suddenly decide to ghost you! It can happen to anyone. If you’ve been ghosted (and trust me, it’s happened to lots of people) you’ll be fi ne. Honestly. And to anyone who’s ghosted, do the honourable thing; don’t resurrect yourself in the form of unexpected text messages and late night phone calls, simply wish them a fond farewell and don’t come back!

mayhem! MeetS…

Johnny Depp is back as the mad hatter in ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’. Mayhem! catches up with Johnny to talk about what it was like to return to his character and what we can expect from the movie and more... The follow up to Tim burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is directed by James bobin; when Alice wakes up in wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical sceptre that can stop the evil lord of Time before he turns forward the clock and transforms wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. with the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of hearts back on the throne. Firstly you must have enjoyed bringing this wonderful character back to life and exploring different characteristics that we didn’t see in the previous film? Yeah it was great to come back and explore this story of Alice and the Hatter. It shows a very different side of the Hatter, beyond that of a multi-personality. It shows a Hatter that goes near to his lowest point. Coming back into the Hatter is a real treat because you always feel, and I’m not a big on watching my own movies, like there’s something more you can do and you always feel like, ‘God maybe I should have put that there.’ We had the opportunity to do that and I think it made a more interesting performance. We see the Mad Hatter as a young boy, very sweet and creative but we’re left wanting to know more. How did he become mad? Well actually the thing with the hatters back in the 19th century was that when they’re doing a beaver pelt top hat, all the glue that they used to stick the pelt and to dress it up was rife with mercury, so it ended up at that time that hatters actually started going cuckoo and they figured out it was MAYHEMMAG |

the mercury. Hence the sort of orange and the green, he’d spent his entire life around it. The tea party scene where Time (played by Sacha Baron Cohen) attends, how was it done? It was probably 30 minutes of James just letting go of Sacha and I. When you’re 15 minutes into this giant improv and you don’t see any way out, peripherally, I just saw crew members walking off to lunch, thinking we probably have to end this soon, but we didn’t, it was too much fun. You’ve touched a bit on how you had to explore different sides to your character. How was it playing a slightly less mad Hatter for this version? You’re dealing with the Mad Hatter who has gone noticeably further down the road of insanity. It’s like that thing, if you’re crazy, if you do have some sort of mental dilemma in the brain, if you’re not aware of it, it’s great. If you are aware that you’re crazy it will eat you alive. So it’s taking the Mad Hatter and making him infinitely more mad, more confused, more lost, more paranoid, more violent. So that was a great challenge.

mayhem! MeetS…

“music was my first love at the age of 12 and I haven’t stopped playing since…” Part of the movie is about family and getting the family back together. If you could say anything to yourself as a young boy, give him any advice, what would you say to him? The fi rst thing I would say is search from simplicity. Stay away from anything that makes a bunch of people stare at you, or makes them follow you in cars and motorcycles back to your hotel. Try to avoid people who write incredibly, sometimes entertaining, but incredibly ludicrous fiction about you and your family. 28 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Finally, you’ve been touring with your band the Hollywood Vampires. When you’re on stage are you the real Johnny Depp? Well, music was my first love at the age of 12 and I haven’t stopped playing since. It’s still my first love. But there was a certain point when I reached what they call a ‘career’, where people start to know who you are from one particular field. And having been a musician all my life, I knew that it was over. The dream that I’d had since I was 12 was done with. I played on people’s records, friend’s albums and what-not

and just kept a low profile. And then we had Alice Cooper in ‘Dark Shadows’ and he asked me to jam with him at the 100 Club, which was a real honour. We played a few songs and then he asked me if I felt like writing some songs with him and so I wrote about five or six songs. I thought I was writing songs for Alice Cooper and then suddenly it turned into this Hollywood Vampires thing. So in a weird way the dream that I’d left behind became a reality. I play the guitar, stand in the dark and it’s a gas. It’s like making movies has become my day job.

spice up your liFe

Spice is the variety of life, and since times long-past, spices have been used worldwide to intensify the taste of dishes, taking them from bland and boring to intense and exotic. written by roBert heWitt

cHinese Five-spice

turmeric

With subtlety and depth, Chinese and Asian dishes regularly use spices to enhance the flavour and give that real, authentic taste. Take for instance Chinese Five Spice, a combination of Szechuan peppercorns, cinnamon, fennel seeds, star anise and cloves. Its combination of flavours brings extra life to dishes like Five Spice Sticky Pork Belly, especially when the meat is left to marinade in the spice overnight.

Ranging from the north to the south, curry dishes have the connotations of heat and after-burn. However, the range of spices used in authentic curry dishes can often surprise you. Take for example turmeric, with its warm, peppery yet slightly bitter aftertaste has been used for thousands of years. Traditional uses include to aid digestion, detox and strengthen the liver, and as an antiinflammatory agent.

30 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

ginger In either it’s powdered or natural form, ginger is a common spice used in Asian, Thai and Indian dishes. With the same history as turmeric, research also suggests that ginger can be used as an anti-nausea remedy, even if taken as herbal tea. With its strong and memorable flavour, ginger can be used in a variety of dishes, from a lemon and ginger drizzle cake to Thai prawn, ginger and spring onion stir fry.

saFFron This is easily one of the most memorable spices, but not purely for its delicate taste. Saff ron itself is made from the stigma of a blue crocus flower. To make 1g of this spice, it takes anywhere from 200–500 of the stigma, so saff ron cultivation is a time-consuming yet lucrative business to be in. Saff ron can be used in recipes such as paellas and many other sea-food dishes or sauces. Even for the most novice cook, there is a spice to match most dishes. All it takes is a little research, a taste for the unknown, and sure enough you’ll soon be bringing the exotic tastes of far-away lands, right to your dinner table.

the new rules!

Freelancer The definition of a freelancer is someone who is self employed and not necessarily tied to one employer. Nothing remarkable there perhaps, but with the advent of mobile technology this has launched new industries and helped redefine what it means to freelance. There is a great freedom for you to be had in tapping into a worldwide audience that is just waiting to discover your talents, and happy to pay you for it whether through product placement, advertising or blogging

volunteering Businesses like charities and trusts constantly rely on volunteers to help grow and support their companies. Also bosses are realising the equal importance in the power of the individual as well as the qualifications. While this may not initially pay financially, it could be a great entry into a new work sector that leads to further opportunities. It is also invaluable for that much sought after experience to convince you to make the leap of faith from a job you hate, into one that unleashes your passions.

linkedin & social media

live to work or work to live? That is the eternal question – and in this fast paced ever changing 21st Century it is more relevant than ever. Is a job for you merely the enabler to earn a decent salary and afford a comfortable lifestyle or is the lifestyle more important than the money? Certainly the concept of one career for life our parents used to aspire for no longer exists in the corporate cost cutting, downsizing workforce. It would seem that we are now looking at more flexible ways of working, and even holding down two or three different jobs to satisfy our curiosities/talents that fit our lifestyles. Mayhem! takes a closer look at some of the widening work opportunities to help build your work portfolio. 32 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

The six degrees of separation theory suggests that everyone or everything in the world is only six or less steps away from each other. In social media terms this is being realised for LinkedIn users, where job seekers, business managers and recruiters alike can create targeted CV’s and introductions. The search can be further honed to include universities, education by using 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree contacts to strengthen their contacts. This means that you can make contact with the future boss or industry professional you’ve been hoping to get connected to. It may even lead to a brand new job or way of life!

MaY the forCe Be With YoU

what were once thought only as cool, lightsabre wielding warrior monks in a fictional story from a galaxy far far away, have slowly led to a rising of uber fans who have adopted the ways of the force and created what some are calling a possible new religion, Jediism. but is this all just a bit of fun, or something more?

WHat is Jediism? Jediism is the belief that a unifying force flows through every living thing, binding the universe together, creating both good and evil (The darkness and the light). Although this core concept is obviously lifted from the major fi lm franchise, these ideas are hardly new. Star Wars creator George Lucas in research for the fi lms took many ideas from other existing religions, like Buddhism, which also uses the idea of an all-encompassing force that inhabits all living things. Unlike the fi lms where the force can be used like telekinesis and even mind control, Jediiism equates the force more in terms of the Chinese ‘Qi’, which has more spiritual implications, and focuses on wellbeing for the mind and body. It’s also worth pointing out that although lightsabres are not real yet, we do have hover boards now. Sort of. So get to it scientists and remember, “Do or do not, there is no try.”

WHat do Jedi’s believe?

The riSe of The

Jedi

Unlike most religions, Jediism does away with a traditional doctrine, instead adopting a more generalised set of beliefs. These include, ‘believing in the sanctity of life and the opposition of torture and the death penalty.’ And ‘a world without discrimination, where all races, genders and sexual orientations are accepted.’ But are these proclamations the foundation for a religion, or a set of ideals we should all just adhere to anyway? I guess only the Sith would take umbrage with statements like those. Even if they do have cooler lightsabres.

HoW did it start?

The concept of a Jedi religion began back in 2001 with a national consensus where 0.7% of people opted to describe themselves as ‘Jedi’ for their chosen religion. It was initially perceived as a joke, but since then hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world have signed up to become a member of the Jedi church. But at what point does a belief system become a religion? Jediism currently exists only as an online community and have yet to be accepted by any governmental body, although many petitions have been made in attempts to build Jedi temples, none have been given the go-ahead yet. A new census taken in 2011, recorded over 176,000 ‘Jedi knights’ residing in the UK, which was nearly triple the amount of Atheists and Agnostics combined. The same census stated only 2,418 people described themselves as Scientologists. A fairly new religion itself that was only founded in 1953. So perhaps it’s only a matter of time before Jediism becomes a legally recognised religion and I can pop to the shops in my robe without getting funny looks. 36 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Yes! The fi rst production of rum goes back to the 17th century in the Caribbean. Originally called kill-devil, rum is a distilled drink made from the by-products of sugar making, which made it a cheaper alternative to beer and wine. It eventually spread through the Caribbean and from 1655 onwards, sailors of the Royal Navy would consume rum instead of beer. Because they would often get incredibly wasted, it was soon decided that the alcohol had to be watered down. Anyway, the Royal Navy was busy chasing pirates, but whenever a fleet was boarded the pirates would seize rum, which they would provide as rations. The pirates, however, drank it straight.

rum around tHe World Pirates weren’t the only people enjoying this beverage, though. Almost every country has their own brand of rum nowadays. The Caribbean remains the biggest producer: 80% of the rum consumed in the world comes from the Caribbean islands, mostly Puerto Rico. That’s also where the biggest rum distillery is located: the Bacardi distillery in San Juan.

Black or dark rum has ripened the longest, giving it its smokysweet flavour. Lastly, you have spicy rums, which are aged just as long as black rums, and have added spices and caramel colourings to give it a spicy sweet flavour.

HoW do you drink it? Summery cocktails such as the Pina Colada, Daiquiri, Mai Tai and Hurricane are some of the most popular drinks made with rum, and you can’t go wrong with a good old Cuba Libre. It doesn’t always have to be mixed, though: in recent years, people have started drinking rum neat or on the rocks, raising awareness that rum is not just for mixing colourful cocktails, but also a sophisticated drink. Served at room temperature in a snifter, rum ranks high alongside scotch and brandy.

Twenty One Pilots emerged out of seemingly nowhere with their huge hit Stressed Out. It certainly suits today’s group of young people – “Out of students loans and treehouse homes we all would pick the latter.”

you knoW i’m no good AMY WINEHOUSE Winehouse’s best selling Back to Black was released in 2006, making this song 10 years old. It’s still as sexy as it ever was. The slow drums will make you roll your body and bat your eyelashes at everyone that walks/drives past you.

WHere are Ü noW SKRILLEX AND DIPLO, FT. JUSTIN BIEBER Almost a year old already (29th June 2015), this song gets everybody up and ready to dance at the chorus. Easy lyrics to remember, too.

First date BLINK 182 Emerging out of the 1990s, punk band Blink 182 shook the world by influencing boys and girls alike to wear over-sized hoodies and skateboard everywhere. Oh, and perhaps bleach their hair. Having said this, First Date is actually pretty romantic – “I really wish it was only me and you, I’m jealous of everybody in the room.”

Perhaps you’ll recognise the riff from the BBC Formula 1 adverts. Comprised of only six verses, most of which are repeated at least once, The Chain is another great breakup song. “If you don’t love me now, you will never love me again.” But it’s alright – Candi Staton wants you to love you for the rest of your days.

try tHis at Home FRANK TURNER British punk-pop-guitarslammin’ tattooed-Turner hits the nail on the head for all musicians when he claims “we write love songs in C, we do politics in G, we sing songs about our friends in E minor.” Many of his songs are politically charged which always makes for a good listen.

drunken lullabies FLOGGING MOLLY Like a slightly more aggressive Mumford & Songs, Flogging Molly makes you want to be Irish. You’ll most likely put on an accent to sing to this song too, it just seems to happen.

Although everyone wants to make the most of what little sun we get in Britain, costs inevitably build up. Fancy decoration, food and cocktails (or “mocktails”) for ten to twenty people can suddenly look very intimidating cost wise, particularly at the shopping belt when the numbers start to soar. But don’t worry, you can still be the host with the most and save for that holiday in the sun with these great ideas.

WHat’s your limit? First things first, actually figure out your budget. Now is not the time to invest too much energy on fancy finger foods such as mini duck confit burgers and jars of sundried tomatoes. The main reason anyone goes to a summer party is for the excellent company and conversation, so stick to good old-fashioned sausages and burgers (veggie options are plentiful in supermarkets too!).

get guests involved Assign one to potato salad duties, another to condiments and the rest to meats and salads. Everyone likes to be involved in the makings of a good party and some love to show off their culinary skills. Ask a few to arrive a couple of hours early to help set up and get any expensive equipment out of the way (just in case your guests get a bit wobbly as the evening goes on). That being said, alcohol really makes a dent in any party budget, so ask guests to bring their own.

and portable barbecue’s. Make the most of these and make sure to check the alcohol isle for ‘basics’ and ‘best buys.’ Don’t go for official brands as these tend to be triple the price. Again, it’s not lavish, but it does the job. Your party doesn’t have to rely on posh nosh.

clean up your act! Spend some time cleaning up your house before you throw your summer bash, as this gives you less to do after everyone has stumbled off home. Make sure you provide somewhere for people to leave their rubbish and a box for recycling. This way you can just pick it up and take it to the nearest recycling bank rather than spending forever collecting everyone’s abandoned cans and bottles.

Have Fun! Cliché advice, we know. But seriously, don’t stress yourself out planning a party, see the budgeting aspect as a fun challenge to get as creative as possible. Set your budget before you start sending out invites and take some time to plan a summery playlist for the day. Don’t go out and start panic buying new patio furniture (unless you plan on using it a lot over the coming months) and use picnic blankets for sitting in the sun. SUMMER 2016 | MaYheM!
