And when you treat yourself to an oh-so-refreshing cup of tea before you head out of a morning, only boil as much water as is absolutely necessary. The sound of a kettle being filled to the brim may wake the neighbours, and soon they’ll all be demanding a brew. Oh, and never, ever leave the hot water tap dripping.

An average week’s worth of wasted hot water could fill half a bath.

Definitely something to ponder as you take a soak. All your troubles can be saved by doing an easy home energy check. A few simple questions and you could save up to ÂŁ280.

THE 10 COMMANDMENTS The Trust outlines a few simple tips on its website, a ‘top ten’ of simple yet effective measures aimed at saving you money and doing good to the environment.

1) Turn down that thermostat! Turning down your overall room temperature by as little as a single degree could save you £60 a year, a ten percent cut on your heating bills.

2) If you find your water is too hot, check to make sure your cylinder thermostat is set at 60 degrees centigrade/ 140 Fahrenheit.

3) Always turn off the lights when you leave a room, common sense really!

4) Use energy-saving lightbulbs. They last around ten times longer than ordinary bulbs, and can save you £55 over their average lifespan, or £120 if you’re giving a high-wattage incandescent bulb the boot.

5) Only boil as much water as you need at any one time – making sure to cover the elements if your kettle is an electric model.

6) Dripping hot water taps waste energy! Make sure they’re fully turned off and fix them should the

need arise. A week’s water from a dripping tap fills half a bath, so just think of the relaxing soak you could have a"er a spot of DIY! 7) Fill up your tumble dryer/washing machine/ dishwasher before you do a load – one full load uses much less energy than two half-loads, so no excuse not to get it done in one hit!

8) Never leave appliances on standby, or charge laptops/mobile phones unless absolutely necessary. Simple, maybe. But sit back and watch your electricity bills tumble.

9) Make a short dusk ritual of checking for draughts around windows and doors, and close curtains to stop heat escaping.

10) Take advantage of the Trust’s ‘Home Energy Check’ system – just answer a few questions and they’ll tell you how you could save up to £280 a year with a few simple changes – visit energysavingtrust.org.uk and get cracking.

CLEANING UP YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT The science behind the carbon footprint is simple – put into the easiest terms, it adds up to the amount of carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere as a direct result of the fuel and electricity we all use in our day-today lives. With better understanding of its effects we can reduce its impact and help make the United Kingdom more energyefficient, one person at a time.

You could start by checking out the Government’s carbon footprint calculator as well as following some simple sample guidelines, from opting to travel on foot, by ‘pedal power’ or public transport over a gas-guzzling car, to taking your holidays in good old Blighty rather than burning up air miles. SOUNDS RUBBISH You’d be forgiven for wondering just how you can freshen up what you’d otherwise throw out, but there are a number of websites which can help – for starters try www.greenlivingonline.com and www.eco-chicliving.com. Essentially it’s all about thrift and recycling – browsing any possible sources to find bits and pieces which you can transform into something new, easing the strain on dear old Mother Earth.

You’d be surprised what it can turn up if you go in knowing how much you can afford to spend and what your creative muse has in mind for your prized finds. An example of eco-chic DIY could be acquiring a former church pew as a woodwork project and turning it to good use, perhaps as bedroom headboards as just one idea.

Car boot sales may also be of benefit, so keep an eye on community newsletters/noticeboards and the local paper for details, or try www.activportsmouth.com for a comprehensive list, while also remembering to set the alarm clock (yes, even if it’s a Sunday morning and you fancy a lie-in) to nab the best bargains! You could be the next David Dickinson in no time, hopefully minus the tango tan. Cheap as chips!

For the fashion-conscious among you, this could be an outlet for your inner designer. Eco-chic living positively embraces looking great, and there are a number of ways to do so. But before you go running for the sewing machine, bear in mind that you should only use organic cotton, silk, hemp and similar green fabrics for clothes with a conscience.

Or, why not try your hand at recycling clothing? The concept is simple – used or vintage clothing is redesigned and re-sewn to make a new and original garment. Since the trend began in the early noughties several books have been released on the topic – try the Generation T series (which began in 2006, containing instructions on how to change old T-shirts into A-line skirts and string bikinis among other items).

And here’s the clinche – by doing so you mark yourself out as a creative talent while showing off ecological awareness. So it’s a win all round!

Since 1965, the World Conker Championships have been held in Oundle, Northamptonshire and, from this crucible of horse chestnut combat, a King Conker and Queen Conker are crowned.

Are you currently a King or Queen? Do you long to wear a crown without feeling like a fraud? Then pay attention and let Mayhem! guide you on your path to becoming conker royalty…

SIZE OF YOUR NUTS! Unfortunately for you, and the geneticallymodified conker industry, the World Conker Championship keeps the playing field level; both the conkers (all of which are a regulation 1.25 inches wide), and the strings used to make them into offensive weapons, are provided by the organisers.

Thus, your skills as a conker gladiator are the sole determiner of victory – not the size of your nuts.

Once you’ve received your conkeron-a-string, a coin is flipped, and whoever wins the toss get to go first; you or your opponent are allowed three swings of your conker at the opposing conker. If it survives the first salvo; it’s allowed three retaliatory strikes. And so on until the game is won. Two further stipulations exist – if a conker falls from the string but remains intact, it’s still live, and may be reattached, and if a game goes on for more than five minutes, a further nine strikes are allowed each; if no shatters have occurred after that, then the winner is the competitor judged to have scored the most hits.

Entry costs £15, though as the proceeds go to charities for the blind and visually impaired; you’ll have the chance to be a benevolent and generous conker monarch; which at the end of the day is what we all strive for.

1) It’s been erroneously reported that it’s mandatory for children to wear eye protection while playing conkers; the Health and Safety Executive reports this is not a healthy and safety policy; just a voluntary measure taken by some schools. Despite the fact that some insane schools don’t enforce this measure, there have still been no cases of conker inflicted blindness. Definitely a cover-up.

2) Some schools have also banned conkers because of a perceived risk of exacerbating allergies… they were probably playing it wrong.

3) The first recorded game of conkers was played on the Mayhem! waterlogged doorstep; the Isle of Wight, in 1848.

4) The world record for most conkers broken in an hour was 306,

by Eamonn Dooley.

THE HUNT FOR RED-FACED OKTOBER The festival in its present form owes its scheduling to the massive impact of the reunification of East and West Germany – since 1994 it has been protocol that should the first Sunday in October fall on the first or second day of the month, the festival goes on until 3rd October (German Unity Day).

Its roots go back to the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig the first and Princess Therese on 10th October 1810, who gives her name to the focal point of the festival – 14 MAYHEM! | OCTOBER 2012

Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the after-party, including a parade, which is recreated as a key part of the festival each year.

Eight thousand Bavarians in traditional costume walk to the festival site from Maximilian Street through the city centre, led by the Munchner Kindl (Munich Child), based on the symbol of Munich’s coat of arms, the role taken by a young woman.

ON TAP Since 1950, the traditional opening to Oktoberfest has been a 12-gun salute, followed by the mayor of Munich tapping open the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at midday – the cry of ‘O zapf ist!’ (meaning ‘it’s tapped!’ in the native Austro-Bavarian language) being the cue for much drinking and merriment after the first pint is given to the Minister-President of the State Of Bavaria.

There are many rules governing a beer’s qualification for status as an official festival drink – it must conform to the Bavarian Purity Law, meaning that only barley, hops and water may be used in production, with a maximum alcohol percentage of around 6%, and must be brewed within Munich’s city limits.

Six main brewers have met the criteria and can, as a result, be classed as official festival brewers – Augustiner-Brau, Hacker-Pschorr-Brau, Lowenbrau, PaulanerBrau, Spatenbrau and Staatliches HofbrauMunchen take the plaudits.

Many countries around the world have their own

equivalents to the event, both inside and outside the German diaspora.

Australia, Ireland, the United States, Canada and parts of South America are among those determined to prove that beer is indeed a universal language.

BEER AND BUNDESLIGA If you do decide to take a trip to Munich, why not combine the beer with arguably its most common bedfellow, football? Unlike in England, you can drink in your seat at games – good news indeed should you opt to take in a game at either Bayern (Germany’s most well-supported club) or their near-neighbours TSV 1860 Munich. Both share the Allianz Arena, with either red or blue lights visible from outside depending on which is playing at home.

THE RETURN OF RAMA Diwali is a commemoration of Lord Rama’s return from a 14-year exile after winning a battle against Ravana, a demon king. Sounds a bit seventies prog-rock concept album so far, possibly? But all this is of vital importance to the festival. Upon Rama’s return, the people of his kingdom celebrated by bursting firecrackers and lighting diyas (the aforementioned clay lamps).

New Dhan (wealth) is accumulated through the purchase of gold and silver or other precious metals as a sign of good luck, and ‘Bhajans’ – devotional songs to Lakshmi – are performed, with offerings of sweets, and in farming communities, cows (worshipped as deities of sorts, especially so as they are the main source of farming income in India).

The first day of festivities (followed by four more) is called Dhanteras, the ‘dhan’ meaning ‘wealth’. It also marks the traditional start of the financial year for many Indian business communities, in line with its customs – business premises and houses are given a touch of renovation and decoration to please Lakshmi, with footprints drawn in rice flour to indicate her anticipated arrival.

Day two is Naraka Chaturdasi, marking Lord Krishna’s slaying of another demon, Naraka, followed swiftly by Amavasya – commemorating Lord Vishnu’s banishment of King Mahabali for trying to conquer the universe, Mahabali eventually taking up a throne in the underworld following his exile – marked on the fourth day, Kartika Shudda Padyami.

The finale brings brothers and sisters closer together – Bhai Dooj seeing sisters inviting their brothers to their homes. As the immigration of Indians around the world has increased, so too has the range and diversity of Diwali celebrations – from Britain and the United States to Australia and New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and several other Asian countries.

Inner light, though, is the overarching spiritual concern, within the self (or ‘Atman’ in Sanskrit) – a ‘true’ self, understood through Atma Jnana (self-knowledge) and the understanding of Brahman (‘universal spirit’). The concept enjoyed a wider Western airing in 1968, when George Harrison of the Beatles composed ‘The Inner Light’, as a B-side to their ‘Lady Madonna’ single of 1968, having been interested in Eastern religion since the mid-sixties, introducing it to the other three of the Fab Four with songs such as ‘Within You Without You’ from their ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album.

ONE TO ONE WITH… Your real name is Jenny Clare Hargreaves but you’ve always been known as Jenny Eclair, how did this come about as a stage name?

In 2010 you headed out to the jungle with ‘Celebrity get me out of here’, what were your initial thoughts when you were approached by ITV?

Apparently I was pretending to be French in a night club in Blackpool – cider may have been drunk – then later I was in a punk cabaret band and we all had daft names and Eclair stuck.

I thought, I’d better shave my pubic hair in case I get caught on camera in a swimming costume!

You studied at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre, what were hoping to become during those years, and when did the comedy side of your career begin to evolve?

An actress, it was a drama school! The comedy side kicked in when I couldn’t get any acting work!

You once had a go at life modelling which must have taken some guts, how did you get into that and can you describe the feeling?

I had a go loads of times, sitting on my naked arse is one of the least taxing jobs I’ve ever had in my entire career, I couldn’t care less about nudity and I loathe primness. of the Perrier comedy award, an for female comedians, but despite being hugely successful how do you feel about female comedians within the industry in comparison to the guys?

There are loads more now and they’re loads better than we were. We were pretty rubbish, there were no role models, we kind of made it up as we went along.

There’s still some way to go but the more experimental and brave women get, the better we are.

You recently appeared on ‘Celebrity Master Chef ’, where did your interest in cooking come from?

I’m not interested in cooking in the slightest! I just thought I should learn something, I’m a bit embarrassed by how crap I am in the kitchen.

What did you learn from the experience?

I’m not as mad as some people!

What were your favourite moments while appearing as a panelist on Loose Women?

Arguing with Carol about art, having a laugh, wearing some nice tops and the omelettes in the ITV canteen!

‘Life, Death and Vanilla Slices’ is the name of your new book. Could you talk us through it, what ’s it about and where did you draw inspiration from?

I could talk you through it, but it would take forever, be quicker for you to read it. It’s essentially about mothers, daughters and sisters, it’s about guilt and the things that you have done that come back to haunt you in later life.

Eclarious is the new tour which you began in September, how is it going? What is this tour all about?

I’m still doing try-out dates, we kick off seriously at the end of the month, there’s a whole heap of stuff from tears that taste of cooking sherry to dry cracked heels and the ridiculous notion that men make good spies.

Your input into ‘Grumpy Old Women’ has been a huge success on television and in the West End, what are current pet hates?

What is your favourite dish?

I really hate the X factor!

I like huge salads with lots of surprises in (but not tomatoes as I’m allergic to them)

ONE TO ONE WITH… There are loads of young comedians entering the industry, do you keep up with emerging talent and who should we lookout for?

Anyone who made it onto the Foster Comedy Award at The Ed fest is a good place to start, try and see someone live in a room above a pub, much more fun than a big arena tour and loads cheaper.

Writing, performing and touring must be exhausting, what do you do to relax?

I like swimming but I’m pretty happy working, it’s not like it’s a proper job.

If you weren’ t writing and performing what would you be doing?

Freaking out with boredom!

Is there anything you would like to achieve in your career or just in life? What’s on your bucket list?

I’m afraid I really hate the phrase ‘bucket list’, it’s mawkish and American and I don’t feel close enough to death to be thinking ‘bucket lists’ thanks. However, there are still things I’d like to do career wise, I’d like to write more novels and I’d like to have a crack at writing for TV or film.

Can you talk us through your writing process?

I mostly do it in my pants – there are no secret, you just do it, until it’s done.

As a teenager in the 70’s, what are your thoughts looking back on the fashion trends in that era?

We were so thrilled with new fashions, it was so exciting, but I suppose being a teenager is exciting whatever the trends. However, the great thing about 70’s fashion was you truly hadn’t seen the stuff before, the next time there was a radical fashion movement was when punk came along which was very tribal and not aimed at the masses.

When you’re off stage and among friends, are you still the funny one or is there a serious side to your personality?

It depends who I’m with, I have friends for laughing with and friends for doing other stuff with.

Can you offer some advice to aspiring talents looking to get into the biz?

Its over-crowded and there’s no money left in telly – sorry, it all got spent in the 90’s – shame.

Not only can you add or remove more or less of the ingredients you love or aren’t so keen on, but you can also use the products you like best. Free range chicken eggs, instead of barn eggs mean your cakes have more colour and flavour, or you might just prefer plain chocolate chips in your cookies to milk chocolate ones (or at least tell yourself they’re a little less fattening for your diet!)

Let’s also be honest, if you’re invited round for a cuppa and somebody produces a freshly baked Victoria Sponge, it’s a little more appealing than watching them open up a cellophane wrapped Battenberg. Having said that, I’m not one to bad mouth Mr Kippling, and he does make ‘exceedingly good cakes’ but sometimes he needs a holiday, and it’s a lot easier than most imagine!

It’s always good to start with the essentials, so if your cupboards are bare, and you’re a bit short on funds, then grab the staples; flour, eggs, butter, caster sugar and vanilla essence. Tools are just as important. Get yourself some scales, a mixer, measuring spoons and cupcake cases and you’ll have everything you need to bake your first batch of cupcakes! Once you get more advanced you can upgrade your instruments as required!

AND…BREATHE In its present form hatha can be understood as physical exercise with accompanying stress relief, focusing on opposing forces (both mental and physical) in an effort to unify mind and body. Should you choose to investigate further you’ll be working on asanas (physical postures), controlled breathing exercises and meditation.

All of which should help you next time you find yourself under any kind of stress, whether its your boss giving you an unreasonable deadline at work, a delayed train or a dull relative.

BUT IT’S NOT RELEVANT NOW, IS IT? Oh but it is. In 2010 the Apple’s genome was decoded, leading to new understandings of disease control and selective breeding in it and other foodstuffs – and, like it or not, in order to safely feed an expanding world population, such an understanding is vital. And don’t forget, in a modern world where most of us have abandoned the concept of healthy eating, the Apple remains a healthy, adaptable, tasty and very available option to your diet. And don’t forget all the geeks who have named their technical whizz bangs after them – Steve Jobs knew a good name for his products when he saw one.

In a world that also celebrates Formal Announcement Day (9th February) and World Tapir Day (27th April) it’s safe to say that the Apple more than most deserves some recognition. Its history, longevity, health benefits alone merit it-and, added to all that, it tastes damned good in a pie with custard!

SO WHEN IS IT? It’s on 21st October this year. Apple Day events can be large or small, from apple games in a garden to large village fairs with cookery demonstrations, games, apple identification, juice and cider – while, on a wider platform, it’s held as a celebration of the importance of physical, cultural and genetic diversity.

Pride rallies and parades have become an important part of celebrations across the world, with symbols including the brightly coloured rainbow flag (a symbol of togetherness and harmony, designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, with a simple colour scheme of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet) – in a reflection of a natural rainbow.

The Thrashers have been based in Southampton since 2011, having previously called Winchester and Andover home – founded as Andover Thrashers in 2003.

Currently competing in Division One of the British American Football National Leagues, which play by standard NFL rules except for the inclusion of a promotion/relegation system, in line with what Americans would call ‘soccer’.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BRAWL GAME You’d be forgiven for thinking that the name of the game was big blokes hurting each other, like a sort of combat rugby. But it’s actually a lot simpler, if not less painful, and a great deal more accessible since the BBC launched its Super Bowl coverage, with at least one National Football League (NFL) match a season played at Wembley. ESPN America and Sky Sports also show matches if you’re lucky enough to have a digibox, a free weekend and a few Buds, both in the ‘friends’ and ‘rather refreshing beer’ senses.

Games are around 60 minutes in length, split into four ‘quarters’ at fifteen minutes apiece, with the referee in charge of timing (the ‘game clock’), with each team allowed three time-outs, to be used at any time. A CHAT WITH…

Self described as “Five lads boshin’ out some tunes” Spector seem to defy any labels and pose as a band who don’t take themselves too seriously – yet the meaning and passion behind their music runs deep. Their sound has been compared to The Killers, The Strokes, Pulp and even Frank Sinatra and they appear to have launched themselves into the music scene faster than you can say “Mayhem!”.

Despite only forming a year ago, Spector have already rocked the stage alongside Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Noel Gallagher, made the BBC’s Sound of 2012 list, been selected as GQ’s best-dressed and played arena’s with Florence and the Machine. So they must be doing something right! We take a moment to catch up with guitarist Jed Cullen to find out the secret to the bands whirlwind success…

Most bands go through years of endless gigs in small venues before they get any kind of reward or recognition – how has Spector achieved so much so fast ?

What is your secret?

For starters the majority of the band have played years of endless gigs in small venues in different outfits prior to the formation of Spector. This can be a formative experience and teach you many skills like stage craft, confidence and what some prefer to as ‘trooperism’ (being able to carry on when it’s all going to shit and/or no-one gives a crap about what you’re doing). While this is all important I believe it’s also a good idea to realise when you’re flogging a dead horse! If the shows are really crushing you, it might be time to get back to the songwriting stage of the project. Never give up if you believe in something but think about why you play each gig. Before Spector presented themselves to the world, we had played gigs at venues we knew no-one would go to. We wanted to separate the first gig jitters from our public presence and it’s this kind of thinking which Fred and Chris are both really good at. Treating the band as a project that has many different arms which can and should be addressed and defining them as the artists wish. Secondly, Fred’s been working at this game for nine years!

The reason Spector rose quickly is largely to do with it being based around an incredible body of work from his musical experience. There are bands who turn 16 and write hits. They are great but there are also bands who reach a different spot in your consciousness, a more artistically considered one. I think we’re a mixture of that. We are jesters of experience and clowns of innocence all making music and co-operating. That initial rise was fun and exciting and owing a lot to Mr Fred Macpherson, my friend and band mate. Maybe some of us are lucky to be in the band, we have time to prove ourselves. But if anyone tries to tell me Fred doesn’t deserve everything he’s got this year, I’ll knock their teeth out.

How would you describe yourself to anyone that hasn’t heard of you yet?

Five lads boshin’ out some tunes!

Has it always been music or were there ever other career options for you?

Among other things I’m a very talented close up magician! This didn’t interest me much though. I didn’t like the magic always being the reason people wanted me at parties. I wanted girls to like me for who I was, a guitarist.

What is your worst ever job?

I was saving up to go and live and study in New York for six months and had three jobs. One was working in a Scottish shop selling kilts. The best part of my day was when my boss would ask me to put a kilt on and stand outside on Portobello Road to get my photos taken with Italian tourists.

It’s really similar to what I’m doing now but maybe more sexy! The other was trying to get people to sign up to a stop smoking program in the streets of Camden, which was really amazing and I met some proper nutters including Craig Charles’s son. The other was definitely the worst. I was putting on my own club nights in central London at the time but to earn that extra money I was flyering every Friday and Saturday for this awful imitation smash and grab night that was commission based. So I really had to push the night on people even though I personally hated the whole vibe around it. It wasn’t even the music it was just the commercialism of it and the way everyone who worked there thought they were dons! It was the opposite to what I was doing with my club night and it made me feel so dirty. Blurrrrrghhhhh that was the worst job I ever had.

How did the opportunity to support Florence and the Machine earlier this year come about?

I don’t know but whoever booked us is a genius. Her fans are brilliant!

Are there any other bands or artists you aspire to share a stage with?

There’s a lot that I would like to personally.

As Spector I think there are enough egos on the stage already, I’m not sure how that would work out... maybe if we got Rick Wakeman to play keys I could concentrate more on shredding. RAAAAOOOOCK!!!!

How has the release for your new album ‘Enjoy it While it Lasts’ gone so far?

Really well. The response has been unreal and we are just so excited to have people responding to it and having such an overwhelming amount of love for it.

My favourite part is when people expect to hate our music because they think they hate the context of our band but can’t help admit they like it. It’s like finally the thing we actually do care about is out there and people can judge us for what we are here for.

A CHAT WITH… What was the inspiration behind the album name?

It’s very straight forward. It is a charge to the world and nothing to do with our position or our context as a band. It is part of the album and there for the same reason the lyrics in the songs are. Although I feel it does offset the sentimental nostalgic elements of the lyrics with the nature of music being about the present. Fred is such a talented lyricist that some people might be taken away from the ‘presentness’ by his words. The album title is there to re-enforce the idea that the music is still a celebration of the present even if it’s in relation to the past. That’s why it’s music. The only intangible art form existing in time but never through it. That’s why we’re a band. If we weren’t interested in enjoying the present, we’d probably just write sad poetry instead.

B) Couch Potato Danny, because he just loves to chill and put his feet everywhere!

Match a band member to each of the following and explain why they have been chosen: A)The Joker: Danny, because we are all incredibly funny but that word just fits Danny the best somehow.

What are you plans for the rest of the year and 2013?

Play some shows, sell some records and write some music. Personally I want to re-connect with God and engage with his never-ending love for all of mankind, that’s not sarcastic, it’s truly my main priority.

C) Party Animal Fred, because I think different members of the band go through phases of this depending on their individual crises but Fred maintains an ability to go hard every night we are back in London and still perform the next morning. I think this might be down to the fact he only started drinking two years ago, I remember having about a five year grace period before hang-overs existed when I started drinking.

D) The Dreamer Me, because I always do this thing where I stop realising someone is talking to me or wants my attention because I am thinking about something. It’s really rude but accidental.

The Southsea Fest kicked off its 5th birthday on the 15th of last month in the scorching sunshine. Scores of revellers descended on Albert Road, eager to settle into a day of live music and festival fever.

The Day of The Rabblement kicked off the Pie & Vinyl Stage at The Wine Vaults, and did a truly fantastic job. The Indie Folk band had the room jam packed with tapping feet and nodding heads to their unique sound.

Emily Edwards, 21, won her ticket courtesy of Mayhem’s competition. “I’ve only just arrived but it’s already amazing.

Mayhem! managed to grab a few quick words as The Day of The Rabblement packed away their instruments…

How did you get together as a band? “Danny and I are married” laughs Khaleda, “Catlin is my best friend and we met Ollie at The Wine Vaults actually!” How would you describe your music? “Great!” shouts Tom as the band all laugh and nod their heads in agreement when Khaleda chips in, “I guess you might say original Indie Folk but very traditionally influenced. We all have different tastes in music, so I guess our influences are just a hybrid collection of all our favourite bands and music. My favourite is probably Bob Dylan.”

It’s clear from every question, when any one band member answers, they ask each other for agreement on every comment and check for any additional statements, which just highlighted what a genuine group of friends they are.

What’s your most embarrassing gig? “That would be New Years!” laughs Ollie and the others, “Tom had an embarrassing time anyway!”

Intrigued to find out more, Tom seems reluctant to divulge until Danny persuades him.

“Ok!” reluctantly Tom agrees. “It was a gig we were playing for New Year.

I was undoing my trousers, ready to display, when our next song was announced by the band. I had to start playing so I couldn’t do my trousers back up. How they didn’t fall down is unbelievable!�

Signed to Psychadelia Records, the band were spotted in November 2011 and seen as a new, upcoming idea for both the band and the record label, and Khaleda says their long term aspirations are simply “to play music and not be skint!!�

The band have recorded an album, Night Time Rallies which they hope will be out before Christmas.

Away from the crowds, recommendations to see Mamas Lips, a Southampton based band performing in Little Johnny Russells, caught ear.

Front man Jack Birks spent a few moments after their set to give the low down on this fantastic unsigned four piece.

How long have you been together and how did you meet? “We’ve been a band for only about eighth months. We are literally just really good friends who enjoy music and formed a band!�

During the set, Scott had to restring his guitar, but it didn’t put them off and the remaining members had a

jam while the guitarist sorted out his strings. The crowd managed to fill the time with wild clapping and cheering, encore style.

Long term goals? “Probably just to be signed and make it big time! We’d love to be able to afford to do this full time.�

Jack describes their music as simply “Rock N Roll!� and denies any particular influence. “Our career highlight so far has to be the Southsea Fest! We’re just so happy to be performing here to get our name out there and heard.� After a quick handshake he was off mingling with the crowd which filled the venue.

Lee Henderson, 45, from Portsmouth is a big Mayhem! and Southsea Fest fan, “I come here every single year!� he laughs “It’s a pity some of the acts this year were cancelled, but regardless, I can safely say I’ve never seen a bad band yet. I think it’s brilliant exposure for the bands. It’s great to see so many talented people, none of that X-Factor s**t!�

Of course there were so many other amazing, talented acts, and sadly far too many to mention.

If anything, the Southsea Fest has once again, managed to prove that the level of talent some of these extraordinary dedicated people have is limitless, and the whole day was nothing but a huge success. Until next year!

WORLD HISTORY!

October is ‘Black History Month’, an annual observation and celebration of the history and culture of important people and events within the African Diaspora. However, despite the fact it’s widely celebrated in the UK, as well as in the USA and Canada, it remains an event that many people are aware of but actually know very little about. Mayhem! investigates further...

WHY WAS ‘BLACK HISTORY MONTH’ INTRODUCED? Former London Mayor Ken Livingstone summed up the importance and purpose of Black History Month by stating the importance of African influences on so many things held dear and ‘owned’ by traditional Western society. For example, medieval and renaissance music in Europe is something that has long been seen as typical of European, especially British origin. But this is not so and Livingstone, rightly, wanted to change this, stating that Africa’s contribution to many historical traditions have been, “omitted or distorted in most history books.”

SO KEN LIVINGSTONE LAUNCHED IT? No, but he was, and remains, a big supporter of Black History Month. The person widely credited as having set up Black History Month in the UK is Akyaaba Addai Sebbo who was the co-ordinator of Special Projects at the old GLC in London. He consequently worked alongside and got to know Livingstone who, via the GLC held the first event on 1st October 1987 when Dr Maulana Karenga visited from the US – an African-American professor of Africana Studies, activist and author.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Addai established the long term project of recognising not only the contributions of African people to history and the economic and cultural life of London and the UK, but those from Asia and the Caribbean. October was thus formally ‘adopted’ as the Black History Month in the UK. It celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

WHO CELEBRATES IT? Everyone! This is very much an inclusive celebration and is open to participation by everyone, one managed and delivered as an educational and historical awareness experience by those with an African, Asian and Caribbean heritage but celebrated by everyone as part of world history.

SO IT’S QUITE SIGNIFICANT THEN? Last year there were very nearly 4,700 separate Black History Month events across the UK – with that figure likely to be exceeded this year. Get out there and find one for yourself. www.blackhistorymonthuk.co.uk

HAIRY HISTORY The first recorded mention of the ‘fro’ harks back to America’s colonial past, when the slaves imported from Africa initially disowned their natural style in an attempt to mimic their new masters.

The American showman P.T Barnum had other ideas at the dawn of the 1860s, however, when he recruited afro-wearing women to join his ‘Circassian Beauties’ – despite the name, no actual Circassian ancestry was needed, big hair and a willingness to have strangers gawp at you enough to get the job done.

A CIVIL RIGHT TO REMAIN FUNKY With the rise of the Afro-American civil rights movement in the early Sixties, the style enjoyed a new level of popularity. An associated ‘Black Is Beautiful’ movement led all involved to return to what they believed was a more natural look, not unlike the hippie movement taking their white brethren by storm at the time.

It was also a symbol of sorts for the Black Panther Party, a reactionary socialist group initially founded on the simple manifesto of protecting African-American neighbourhoods from police brutality. It quickly spread, much like a well-grown afro, to become a counter-cultural force, much to the delight of founders Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, though FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was mortified, calling the party ‘the greatest threat to the internal security of the country’.

Consider the number of musical icons who sported bad-ass barnets at the time – Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone and a young Michael Jackson (in his Jackson Five period). In fact, it’s harder not to spot at least one member of any funk band of the period who wasn’t keen to show off a spot of hairstyling handiwork... consider the likes of Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire and the Ohio Players.

A ROLLER COASTER RIDE WITH… How did your name come about?

Our ex-bassist visited a Christianthemed theme park in Buenos Aires, the centerpiece of which is a huge animatronic Jesus, which ‘resurrects’ hourly out of a mountain.

He suggested ‘Jesus Theme Park’ as a name, we chopped off the Jesus bit and here we are.

How would you describe your sound?

Essentially, danceable pop music.

In the most direct sense, people making ambitious and danceable QPQ NVTJD -$% 4PVOETZTUFN Arthur Russell, Prince, Bowie are all favourites.

Why do you think you get compared to ‘Talking Heads’ so much?

The verse melody in ‘Milk’ bears certain similarities, but I think we’re fairly different bands beyond that.

Perhaps people find it easier to remember and categorise bands in a ‘file next to’ sort of a way. I know I’m guilty of doing that sometimes.

You developed quickly as a band what are your secrets?

For sure, people have always been very generous with their support online, and the Reading goers were certainly no exception.

You were number one on ‘Amazing Radio’ for three weeks consecutively, how did this help the band?

Gill Mills and the Amazing Radio team were super supportive from the very start. It gave us that instant and tangible reassurance that people were listening to us.

What was it like working with Luke Smith on your debut album?

Luke’s a really great producer, he has very clear ideas about how to bring a track to where he feels it should be, and he’s a real pedant for the best quality recordings.

You’re the main support for Bloc Party’s UK Tour, that’s a huge achievement, are you looking forward to it?

Absolutely! They released Silent Alarm when we were all in mediocre school bands aged 15 or 16, so it’s kinda surreal to be playing alongside them now.

After we established the Theme Park sound – the kind of songs we wanted to write and the aesthetic we were seeking – it became a lot easier. After that, simply hours and hours of hard work!

Two of you are brothers, is music in the blood?

You just played Reading Festival, that must have been a crazy experience, you’ve only been around a year or so, how was it playing such a huge venue so early in your career?

Where were you guys heading, career wise, before all the success?

Fantastic! We were on at 12:30 in the morning, but loads of people whom I presumed would be asleep or hungover still came and made it a great gig.

The crowds at Reading are massive this must have been a real platform for you guys, have you seen a rise in social media activity since then?

Well, Marcus and Miles were named after Marcus Miller and Miles Davis!

Music has been in all of our lives before we were even conscious of it.

We all retain interest in film. I know Miles has been working on his own screenplay for an episode of Game of Thrones and an original film idea.

Maybe if the Theme Park empire crumbles, it’ll come to fruition one day.

What has been the best gig you’ve ever played? Not the biggest but the most entertaining, best crowd...

Actually, one that sticks in the mind is an extra gig we did at Leeds festival. We were on at 9:30pm, clashing with all the biggest bands, but a handful of people came to see

us instead. It was an honour really, and such a good party.

What big names have you supported so far?

Well we’ve been lucky enough to support Florence and The Machine, Mystery Jets, Two Door Cinema Club. Playing with Bombay Bicycle Club was probably the most fun as some of us went to school with them. behind your music?

Mostly from music we love, but equally a great book or film can put you in a creative frame of mind.

What are your plans for 2013?

Firstly, to get the album out, and then, all going according to plan, travelling the world and playing it to as many people want to hear it.

Whose the joker in the group and whose the mother?

Drummer Phil is 30 now and has done it all before, so I guess he’s probably the mother. Miles is an FDDFOUSJD SBNCMFS .BSDVT MPWFT to prank. Both are hilarious.

Have you been on tour yet or is there one in the pipeline?

Both! When the album’s out there’ll be a big tour, but there’s only supports and odd shows til then.

What do you guys do to entertain yourselves when waiting around backstage or on the tour bus?

Much reading, watching of films and so on. In fact when we’re on tour we try to collect good weapons (not real ones, don’t worry), and battle.

Who are your favorite artists?

A bold question! Too many. Terrence Malick springs to mind. I had the good fortune to see a film called ‘Pierrot le Fou’ by Jean Luc Godard the other day which was just fantastic. Check it out.

If you had to be a tribute band, what band would you tribute?

Prince, no doubt.

FORT WIDLEY

OLD PORTSMOUTH Jack Aitken attempted to burn down the dockyards in Old Portsmouth. He was hanged for attempting to commit arson in the naval dockyard and his body was displayed in a gibbet. To this day, the chains are said to still be heard clinking in the wind. Felton House lies in Old Portsmouth and is a derelict 18th Century townhouse.

A family once lived here but is now in disrepair since they felt forced to move out after constant ghostly activities. The house was put on the market, but nobody dared buy it.

Haunting spirits include a sergeant major who whistles while he walks.

The old sergeants’ mess in the fort is allegedly an intimidating area to visit. Running deep beneath the fort, the tunnels are reported to be haunted by a little boy. It’s claimed he fell to his death down the spiral staircase running from an officer.

WYMERING MANOR The oldest house in Portsmouth, this building was even recorded in the Doomsday Book and is now open to ghost tours. The manor is steeped in history and famous for reports of paranormal activity including, whispers of children, strange apparitions, and items of the buildings moving on their own accord.

The White Swan is haunted by the ghost of a Victorian barmaid who was murdered by her husband.

The Theatre Royal have had strange paranormal reporting’s including those from an actor who cut his throat here in the 1800’s. The Southsea Castle has reports that a white lady has been seen walking in the castle and people have been pushed by an unseen identity.

Reports also include strange scratching noises from the ‘time tunnel’ exhibition. The White Garter public house was pulled down and bodies were found underneath where the building stood. Legend has it that the landlady and her male friend stole from their guests and then murdered them. These guests still haunt the area to this day.

The 1946 return of executive producer James Carreras, following World War Two, proved something of a rebirth for Hammer, as suppliers of ‘quota quickies’ (low-budget movies designed primarily to satisfy the Cinematograph Films Act, brought into law in a bid to stimulate a declining British film industry).

Hammer Horror was officially born in 1955.

The real-life Dr Frankenstein was theatre comedian Will Hammer and the first film produced by Hammer was a comedy: 1935’s ‘The Public Life of Henry the Ninth’. It tells the story of Henry Henry, a down on his luck London street musician – and currently on the British Film Institute’s ‘75 Most Wanted’ list of lost and long forgotten films not known to be available or within cinematic archives.

Its first picture was an adaptation of the BBC science-fiction serial ‘The Quatermass Experiment’, directed by Val Guest and released as ‘The Quatermass Xperiment’ – a ploy to cash in on the then-new ‘X’ certificate for explicit films.

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification), were not happy, though. The company voluntarily submitted all its scripts to the national censors at the time, and examiner Audrey Field commented of ‘X The Unknown’, an intended next step in the Quatermass series: “Well, no one can say the customers won’t have had their money’s worth by now. In fact, someone will almost certainly have been sick. We must have a great deal more restraint, and much more done by onlookers’ reactions instead of by shots of ‘pulsating obscenity’, hideous scars, hideous sightless faces, etc, etc. It is keeping on and on in the same vein that makes this script so outrageous.

They must take it away and prune.

Before they take it away, however, I think the President [of the BBFC] should read it. I have a stronger stomach than the average (for viewing purposes) and perhaps I ought to be reacting more strongly.”

CREATURE FEATURES The late 1950s saw the release of the first wave of the sort of films most fans associate with the studio – ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, starring Peter Cushing as Baron Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as his monstrous creation, hitting cinemas in 1957, followed quickly by a sequel in shape of ‘The Revenge Of Frankenstein’.

Clearly the public was hungry for more, and Cushing and Lee (plus composer James Bernard’s eerie music) were soon appearing in 1958’s ‘Dracula’, Lee in the title role as the bloodsucking count and Cushing as vampire hunter Van Helsing. Just a year later they were back in the first film of another retrospectively popular franchise – ‘The Mummy’, (though Bernard had been replaced with German composer Franz Reizenstein) with Lee spending hours in make-up once again for the role of Kharis, a mummified Ancient Egyptian high priest, Cushing portraying his intended victim, archaeologist John Banning.

These three massively successful series spawned 17 sequels between them across a period from 1959–1974, a success rate that the ‘new’ Hammer, resurrected as of 2007, will be looking to replicate, ‘Let Me In’ and ‘The Woman In Black’ (starring Daniel Radcliffe) a good start since their rise from beyond the grave.

PHOBIAS Well, for some the thought of ‘going away’ can strike terror into their hearts, literally, and this is probably because they have a phobia. A phobia is a morbid fear of something and can be really, really scary. Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, a feeling of dread or even a feeling that you might die, and they can be debilitating.

Some are outright weird though. What do you reckon this is a fear of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?

Whoever decided the name for this phobia is probably a little bit cruel and should be avoided at all costs.

This is the name for a phobia of long words!

But there are loads of phobias, with the most common phobias being; Arachnophobia (spiders), Ophidiophobia (snakes), Acrophobia (heights), Agoraphobia (the fear of situations from which it’s difficult to escape, Cynophobia (dogs), Astraphobia (thunder and lightning), Trypanophobia (injections), Social Phobias (the fear of social situations), Pteromerhanophobia (flying) and Mysophbia (the fear of germs or dirt) and another really common phobia is Emetyphobia (the fear of being sick or around people who might be sick). There are literally hundreds of phobias, from the extremely bizarre to the downright understandable.

You know, one of the most interesting things about phobias is that they can be turned around really easily, sometimes in just an hour. Think about it, a lot of phobias come about because of one situation which created a fear so great you remember to be afraid for weeks, months, even years after the event. Some people can’t remember to put the bins out each week. So here’s the rub, if you can remember to be afraid from just one experience, you can learn to be unafraid just as quickly…pretty cool.

I think I will. It’s something I’d wanted to do for a long time, so when the opportunity came up to be able to do it for ‘Les Mis’ I leapt at it. It was really scary when I did it but then once it was done I found it just really suits my lifestyle much more. I’m excited for my fringe to grow in though.

I think once I have that then the world will be my oyster.

YOU CAN DO ANYTHING THEN?

Then there is no stopping me. I’m really excited, I feel like I’m gonna get through all of the ‘Les Mis’ press and then I think I’m gonna just blow it out platinum and just start doing all the tangerines, pinks and I’m gonna have some fun. I’m basically gonna do everything that I should have done when I was 13 when I’m 30.

SO CATWOMAN, WOW. I HEARD IT WAS A DREAM OF YOURS TO PLAY HER?

I mean, it was a very vague sort of pipe dream that I had when I was a kid, but I think a lot of people had it.

It wasn’t like a specific dream that I ever pursued it just kind of happened. But it was one of those cases where reality ended up being far better than my dreams.

WE SAW THE COSTUME ON DISPLAY AND IT WAS LIKE,‘WOW, THAT IS HOT’. WHEN YOU PUT IT ON DID YOU FEEL ALL FELINE?

You know, I didn’t even focus on that. The character doesn’t think of herself as feline, so I was just kind of in her headspace. She’s a con artist and a jewel thief, so she puts it on to do a very specific part of her job. I don’t know, it didn’t actually cross my mind.

SHE’S PRETTY COOL THOUGH.

She’s very cool. She’s very independent-minded.

IT’S TINY AS WELL – DO YOU THINK YOU WERE IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE FOR THIS FILM?

So far. Maybe there’s another place to go with it but, yeah, I’ve never been a gym person or, like, a vegetable person quite frankly, but I became both on this and actually I enjoyed it.

I know that’s really, really annoying to say but I liked getting healthy.

WERE THERE SOME MORNINGS WHERE YOU THOUGHT ‘OH REALLY?’, KNOWING THE WORKOUT YOU HAD TO DO THAT DAY?

There were some mornings after some nights where I was like, ‘Oh god why? Why did I do that?’ I remember – and this is a little personal – but the first time I did a full workout with a hangover I realised I’d entered a different phase of my life.

IT’S NOT FUN…

It wasn’t fun but I did it and there was something very, very inspiring about it. I’m not even gonna let a hangover stop me! I’m that person now!

AND IT MADE YOU FEEL BETTER AFTERWARDS?

It did, it did. And it made me want to have fewer hangovers.

I SHOULDN’T IMAGINE YOU HAD MANY HANGOVERS WHILE YOU WERE TRAINING FOR THIS FILM?

No I didn’t. I was very well behaved on this one but I had the occasional night out. Gotta have a bit of fun.

SO HOW DID YOU ACTUALLY GET INTO THAT SUIT EVERY MORNING?

A lot of determination – and elastic.

WAS IT COMFORTABLE ONCE IT WAS ON?

I mean it’s not sweat pants or anything like that! It’s not something you want to sit at home in on the couch but it wasn’t terrible. I had a huge range of mobility so that was alright.

WHAT DID YOU WEAR UNDERNEATH IT?

I can’t tell you!

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON A FILM WHERE YOU HAD TO KEEP SO MANY SECRETS?

I actually enjoyed it. Present company excluded, sometimes when you do press it can get a bit routine – ‘tell us about the film, tell us about your character’ – and with this one it was so great to not be able to talk about things. I think it forces the questions to be a little more creative.

DID THE BOYS ON SET LOOK AFTER YOU?

Yeah, I think everyone took me under their wing a little bit because not only was I a newbie to the cast, I was the only person who hadn’t worked with Tom [Hardy] before – so everybody was really nice to me.

AND WORKING WITH CHRISTOPHER NOLAN? AMAZING?

Oh yeah. Oh my god, amazing. Like best-director-in-the-world-amazing.

He’s just really in a class by himself.

I can’t think of another filmmaker who is so great in so many ways.

The thing is – and it’s fun to be able to tell people – in addition to the films that he makes which are obviously completely brilliant, the way he runs a set is so beautiful and respectful and refined and fun. And who he is as a person is just delightful and so he’s just across the board wonderful and an inspiring person.

AND WHAT ABOUT CHRISTIAN BALE BECAUSE WE HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT AN INTENSE ACTOR HE IS. IS THAT THE CASE?

I think Christian takes his job extremely seriously. He’s there to work. He doesn’t mess about with other peoples’ time and money. But he is so extraordinary to work with.

Sorry, I don’t want to use the word inspiring again but it’s true, he is.

I think he’s an incredibly original thinker and I think he’s a really kind person. I really loved working with him and I hope – I mean it’s selfish – but I really hope I get to do it again.

I WONDER IF YOU WILL?

That would be nice. I want to. If you can pull some strings for me I’d really appreciate it. I remember one day just looking into his eyes and there was so much power coming off of him and I was like, ‘Ah that’s why you won that Oscar, OK I get it!’ He’s a really remarkable person. I really enjoyed getting to know him on this movie and I love the way his mind works. And I felt very privileged to get to do scenes with him.

WAS THERE ONE SCENE IN PARTICULAR YOU HAD WITH CHRISTIAN WHERE YOU WERE THINKING ‘ THIS IS JUST FANTASTIC’?

The last scene we shot together is the scene on a rooftop, but it was my last day and it was Christian’s last time in the bat suit and we were on top of a god-knows-how-many-storey building in Manhattan, looking out over the skyline and there was a full moon and it was just goose-bump inducing, the whole night. So I mean they’re all pretty cool, but that one was pretty amazing.

AND WHAT ABOUT TOM HARDY – THAT IS A REALLY FEROCIOUS COSTUME WITH THAT MASK?

Yeah Tom is such a love though, you couldn’t really be scared. I just felt so bad though because whenever we would be like in between takes he would talk to me and I couldn’t understand a word he was saying.

So I would always kind of nod and ask really neutral questions so I didn’t show I had no clue what he was talking about.

AND YOU DID ALL YOUR OWN STUNTS? THAT’S AMAZING?

Thank you. Yeah. I was lucky because sometimes when you’re asked to do things way outside your comfort zone you’re expected to do them right away and this whole film just got behind me and supported me and taught me how to do everything I was going to need to do. I had the most amazing stunt team possible.

WHAT IS LIKE DEALING WITH THE EXPECTATION WHEN A BIG FILM LIKE THIS IS COMING OUT?

You know it’s nerve-wracking. But the response has been really positive.

I’m happy with it and I know Chris [Nolan] is happy with it and that’s all I can really focus on.

FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WOMEN WHO THINK IT ’ S JUST A BOYS’ FILM?

It’s a great movie and I think great movies appeal to everyone regardless of gender. But if you’re looking for some bait, I mean Tom Hardy – big muscles, Christian Bale – just beautiful and Marion Cotillard is gorgeous.

WHY DO WE DO IT? The change from BST back to GMT has taken place since 1916 when, following wartime enemy Germany’s lead, the clocks went back to give farmers more daylight in the mornings to work their fields.

ALL TO DO WITH THE WORLD WAR ONE THEN? Yep – and we’ve stuck to it since.

Germany had already adopted the policy so, in order to ensure that the oh-so-cunning Hun farmers didn’t get a sneaky advantage, the British Government followed suit!

AND THE ARGUMENT FOR DOING SO? AND WE’VE DONE IT EVER SINCE? Indeed. Although there is an increasingly growing lobby suggesting we abolish he practice and keep to BST all year round – meaning the farmers would work later in the day rather than earlier.

SO WHY CAN’T THEY? Well – they won’t. They are, in the main, completely against scrapping putting the clocks back. Their argument is if you DON’T put the clocks back they then won’t be able to start work so early in the morning and that livestock farmers, in particular, would be inconvenienced in having to wait for daylight until they could feed their stock.

Simple – one of safety. The major argument in favour of scrapping putting the clocks back is that the lighter mornings will mean less road accidents in the peak travelling times, especially regarding the hoards’ of school children that are travelling at that time.

BIT OF AN IMPASSE THEN? And one not likely to be resolved soon. One possible scenario is that it is scrapped in England and Wales but not in Scotland – the farther North you travel, the less daylight there is anyway. Britain has had different time zones before – pre 1880 for example and the introduction of GMT, Truro was 20 minutes behind London: imagine the confusion for train travellers there!

Ball soon became concerned at the overuse and over familiar repetition of his creation – it was everywhere, an ever present part of modern culture which popped up everywhere and was adopted by many sub-cultures including the Hippy scene of the late 60’s where having a smiling face and being happy was often, rightly or wrongly, associated with a fondness for the occasional chemical. Smiley face was, in short, being abused...

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT THEN? You’ve all seen the famous smiley face haven’t you? That was created by an American artist, one Harvey Ball in 1963, a yellow and black icon that went onto become one of the most recognisable symbols on the planet.

SO BALL KICKED BACK? Indeed he did. He decided to reclaim his symbol and its intent by launching World Smile Day, an idea that, for one day every year, we should all, without exception, devote our time to smiling at our fellow man and dedicate ourselves to kind and selfless acts throughout the day. The

first World Smile Day was eventually held in 1999, and has continued from those humble origins in Massachusetts to being celebrated all over the world.

HARVEY MUST BE A VERY HAPPY CHAPPY THEN? Let’s hope it’s a fitting legacy. He died in 2001 but not in vain: the Harvey Ball World Smile Federation was ultimately set up in order to honour his name and memory as well as to perpetuate the concept of, well, smiling at one another!

WHEN IS IT BEING HELD? It’s 5th October this year – so get out there and do Harvey and his famous icon proud by doing an act of kindness and helping someone smile – you might make a real difference to someone’s life by doing so.

Tarantino’s back, every bit as confident, stylish and self-assured as ever before.

Just the way we like it...

“This is it,” says Quentin Tarantino.

“This is the sweet spot.”

Six movies into his directorial career, with a seventh, Django Unchained, on the way, and “deep into his forties”, as he puts it, Tarantino is brazen in his self-belief. “Artistically,” he says, “I’m at my peak”.

“I’ve worked to this, this level of skill, this level of ambition. This movie is definitely my new Mount Everest.

Every time I do a big movie, that’s the next Mount Everest.”

“Well this is this Mount Everest; it’s a little higher than the other ones.

And Kill Bill was pretty high as far as mountains go. In my opinion of where I am living right now, I feel it’s the best.”

The best yet? In a run that includes Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds, that’s quite the statement. But Tarantino was never one for statements anything but bold.

The Best Director Oscar may still elude him, but in the estimates of his peers and critics, the Knoxvilleborn 49-year-old ranks among the best to ever live.

The aestheticisation of violence, the razor-sharp dialogue, and nonlinear storylines may be Tarantino hallmarks, but the True Romance writer has never been one to pigeonhole himself.

With the heist movie, gangsta flicks, chanbara and grindhouse covered, Tarantino has turned his attention to the spaghetti western.

“I’ve always wanted to do a western.

I always knew that when I did it, it would probably have a little spaghetti sauce on it to some degree or another.

“It’s funny”, he says “because Kill Bill Vol 2 kind of had a spaghetti western vibe to it, and even Inglorious Basterds, especially the opening”.

“I remember my script supervisor – who has been my script supervisor on all my movies –when we were shooting on that first day of Inglorious Basterds. It was that scene, and he goes, ‘Quentin, this is your first western!’”

Starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christoph Walz, Django Unchained focuses on slavery in the United States – a topic Tarantino admits he’s been keen to tackle for some time.

“I’ve been wanting to deal with that issue and I’ve been wishing other people would deal with that issue for a long time – and in lieu of anybody else doing it,” he says, “I’m going to throw my hat in the ring.”

“It’s a subject that means a lot to me and probably a subject that means more to me than anything else. I’m fascinated by it, but when it came to do the script, I didn’t look at any history books. I didn’t want to have the arms’ length of history. I asked myself the questions and I came up with the answers.”

Making a movie about something as sensitive as slavery is a typically brash move by Tarantino. The use of racial epithets in Jackie Brown, in particular, his homage to

Blaxploitation cinema, drew criticism from legendary director Spike Lee, while Inglorious Basterds took the unconventional route of making an action film about the holocaust.

But while he may not be consulting history books (“I’m not rewriting history here. No, everything that happened, could happen,” he says), his process is as meticulous as ever.

He draws inspiration from far and wide, paying homage to past cinema, and talks passionately, at length, about creating the perfect fake blood (“Sometime around Kill Bill, we solidified the exact colour of blood that I like. I like a much more Japanese style of blood where it’s like red and it almost has a paint kind of quality to it”).

It’s this attention to detail, and this knowledge of cinema, that has landed him among the all-time greats. Riding on a wave constant success, how does he stay grounded?

“The thing is,” he says “it’s kind of easy to get back to being humble.

Part of the reason people respond to me is because I do the work – and the work keeps you humble.”

“It would be easy to give somebody else the script and develop it and do this and do that, but I don’t do that. I write from scratch. And so,” he says, “I can have a big success with Basterds and that’s all great… but, now, when I face all those blank pieces of paper, I’ve got to write the new one.”

“I’m right back at square one again.

That keeps you humble.”

WINDOWS 8 WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? SOFTWARE UPDATE!

The 26th October sees Microsoft launch the next version of the Windows platform – Windows 8. There are also some big updates coming to the Xbox system and Windows Phone platform, but that’s another story.

The trend over the last couple of years has seen the use of touch screen phones and tablets grow hugely, and as users these devices are perfect because they are so simple, always turned on and most of the information you need is available at the touch of a button. In fact, at home this has meant that laptops/ PC’s are more often than not just sat there gathering dust simply because they take so long to turn on. For those of you that have tried to use tablets for business you have probably found that things aren’t quite as simple. available on tablets and systems that business are using, and in fact, some businesses have invested a lot of money in creating apps that can be used on tablets but in general this just isn’t happening often enough.

So, you are probably wondering what is going to be so great about Windows 8. The most basic concept of Windows 8 is that as a platform it’s been created with touch at the very heart of it, but also with the full power and compatibility that you would expect from your standard Windows PC or laptop. This platform will bridge that small (but important) gap

between the mobile device (phone/ tablet) and the computer (laptop/ desktop). Windows 8 is, however, not really any different from Windows 7, XP or any other version of Windows you are used to using. It will still allow you to run any of your normal business applications, or even the latest games. Windows 8 has also improved it’s functionality, with built-in connectivity to the Microsoft cloud system (SkyDrive) and a fairly new technology called DLNA which allows you to play media content (YouTube videos, music etc) to other DLNA compatible devices such as some of the latest TV’s or an Xbox.

SOFTWARE UPDATE!

THE CONTROVERSY The most widely talked about part of Windows 8 is the new start menu it has changed in a big way, and when I say big, I mean it is now full screen. Think of it as the home screen for your tablet of smartphone, it has all the apps pinned to it that you use regularly. Each app is a big rectangular tile that is most definitely designed for touch use. Each of these tiles is alive, showing me my next calendar appointment, the latest tweet or a snapshot of photos or news headlines. There is so much information available without actually having to open the application.

The start menu button at the bottom left of your desktop is there, but it’s invisible. Moving the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen will show the new start button.

THE MOST CONFUSING BIT! There are actually two versions of Windows 8 – WinRT & Windows 8 Pro. WinRT is a slightly cut-down version of Windows 8 and is designed for the ‘ultra’ mobile devices that only need charging once every couple of weeks.

The big catch here is that WinRT will not run a lot of your existing software (there is a big technical reason for this), so if you are on the hunt for a new device double check that you get the correct version for your needs.

For those of you that want to give Windows 8 a go you will find that it will pretty much work on any machine that is currently running Windows 7 or Vista, and probably work quicker!

A CATCH UP WITH… RUSSELL HOWARD

Not on e jot. A sevent h se ries of his hit come dy show Russell Howard’ s ‘Good News ’ will air later this mont h, an d the ever-mocking 32 year old has no plan s to ease of f just yet...

Russell Howard’s droll, laissez-faire attitude has cultivated a triumphant stand-up act and, ultimately, the root of his success.

Makes sense then that the 32 year old funnyman would rather perform a highland fling on a carpet of dirty hypodermic needles than modify his act for the slightly more offendable folks across the Atlantic.

Howard went down a storm in the States with his first appearance on the Conan O’Brien show last year and reveals he’s currently working on a few projects that could bring a more permanent US move.

“Working over in the States,” he says, “I felt like an 18 year old rookie again, which is nice. It feels like a clean slate where anything can happen. I’d love to do more in the States. It’s fresh territory and I’m talking to a few people now, so we’ll see what comes of these conversations”.

“The appearance on Conan’s show wasn’t so much nerve-wracking, more unsettling to see how I would be received out there. I wondered whether they would get my humour, but it seemed to go alright.”

“American’s are so PC though, you could really find yourself walking on eggshells. But to ‘make it’ as they say, out there, no, I wouldn’t do that at all.

There’s no way I’m modifying what I say to adhere to a norm. It’s not even a sticking-by-my-principles attitude.

I just couldn’t be bothered.”

“I’m doing alright in the UK, and if they have a problem with what I say in the States, then, whatever. They can write a letter of complaint.”

Howard, who will soon return with a new series of his hit show Russell Howard’s Good News, did have a rather memorable encounter with Croatian tennis ace Novak Djokovic, another guest of O’Brien’s on the night.

Djokovic, it seems, took harmless small talk to another level.

“It’s ridiculously difficult to believe a show with my name on it has gotten to seven series. It’s rather absurd really if you think about it. I mean, who am I? Just some random punter blathering on about whatever comes to mind.

I often think, ‘Who wants to hear what I have to say?’, though I try to not entertain those thoughts – they’d definitely keep me awake at night.”

“It wasn’t long after he had won Wimbledon and, I have to say, Djokovic So does the comedian who can boast is a bit of an odd character, kind of of being the youngest ever stand-up reminiscent of Sacha Baron Cohen,” says to sell out London’s O2 Arena have Howard. “He congratulated me on my any changes for the upcoming series? show, saying in this big, animated voice, ‘Well done, you are really funny’. “So, as it turns out, the sheen from his Wimbledon win was wiped clean simply because I didn’t make an appearance at the Wimbledon men’s final in 2011. Otherwise I’m sure he would have carried me on to Centre Court on that big plate trophy thing they win. Which, to be fair, sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon.”

Taking a swipe at the funniest and, frankly, most bizarre current stories, Russell Howard’s ‘Good News’ has been a ratings winner for the BBC. And at seven seasons and counting, no one is more surprised than the man himself at the longevity and success of the show.

With ‘Good News’, commitments to panel shows like ‘Mock The Week’, his stand-up tours and designs on the American dream, it makes you wonder where the Bristol native fits it all in?

“The trick is, I never actually combine any two things I’m working on. That would do my head in. I find if I split my stand-up and keep it separate from my TV work, I can manage much better. Saying that, I never have any time off. My own fault, of course, but I like it that way.”
