It could be argued that link ing your coffee to your per sonality isn’t an exact science, but body language experts Jud i James and James Moore, and clin ical psychologist and profess or of psychology Dr Ramani Dur vasula believe you can tell a lot about a person from the coff ee they drink:

INSTANT COFFEE You’re laid back and take life as it comes, but tend to procrastinate and put things off. A cheerful and straightforward kind of person, unfortunately you’re not known for your planning skills.

BLACK COFFEE You like to keep things simple and are resistant to change. Patient, efficient and a bit old school, you also have a tendency to be dismissive.

LATTE A real people pleaser, you’re generous with your time and go out of your way to help others. Young at heart, this could be interpreted as immaturity. You like your creature comforts, but don’t always take good care of yourself.

ESPRESSO You tend to be impatient and can be moody, but you’re a hard worker. With short-term goals and an interest in leadership, you’re often an exciting but not very reliable lover.

DECAF Overly sensitive and a bit obsessive, you’re a perfectionist who likes to be in control. You monitor your health, making healthy choices for your body, but can focus too much on rules and order, and tend to worry. 10 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

BRITISH

SANDWICH WEEK

WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

The humble sandwich – over 2000 years in the making. No, not the one you got from the petrol station the other night – but ever since Hillel the Elder* wrapped a piece of cooked lamb in his flatbread and found it both convenient and tasty! LUNCH TIME FAVOURITE!

2000 YEARS AGO? BLIMEY! Exactly. They’ve been around for a long long time. Not surprising really as the premise is such a simple one – take something yummy and wrap it in something bready. Simple, quick, convenient, tasty - and, crucially, portable!

A WEEK OF CELEBRATION! Yep, a week of sandwich related chicanery will take place from 12th–18th May, led by the British Sandwich Association who describe themselves as: “the voice of the British sandwich industry” with a stated aim of promoting excellence and innovation in sandwich making.

ARE THEY SERIOUS? Hugely, so don’t mess with them – they have a mission statement, management committee and a code of practice. They take sandwiches very seriously!

WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR SANDWICH? It’s chicken – and by quite a long way. Cheese sandwiches come in second with egg coming in third. It’s estimated that the Brits alone eat eight billion between them a year, making us world leaders (we had to be in something!) in sandwich production and eating.

Our quest to bring great brewing, matched with great locally sourced seasonal food is now on offer at The White Swan in Guildhall Walk. We are so committed to great beer, that we actually brew our own beer on site!

HOW MANY PEOPLE INDULGE? The BSA estimate that nearly 70% of the British population eat a sandwich at least once a year – with most people consuming them regularly. Our eternal love for the sandwich means around 300,000 people are employed within it, one way or the other, that’s more people than those working in agriculture!

I LIKE A BACON ONE MYSELF... Lots of studies have been done on those! One conducted by the University of Leeds found that the optimum time for cooking bacon was seven minutes under a pre-heated grill at 475 degrees F/250 C.

MOUL E S & BE E R FOR TWO

I’M HUNGRY NOW! How about trying the world’s largest ‘pre-packed’ sandwich then? Believed to be one created by Roberts Bakery in Norwich, it was 2.5 metres long and filled with Marmite, Princes tuna and Hellmann’s mayonnaise – weighing in the same as 1,000 loaves!

CRAFTY!

Those creative folk among you might already know that 11th–19th May is Voluntary Arts Week. A celebration of amateur arts and crafts across the nation, this is your chance to find your crafting fingers, get creative and have fun. So what’s it all about? Voluntary Arts Week is an annual, week-long event across the UK and Republic of Ireland. It was started in 2011 by Voluntary Arts, the national development agency for arts and crafts. This year, they’re kicking off the week with the first ever national CraftBomb.

WHAT’S A CRAFTBOMB?

WHAT IF I CAN’T?

It’s basically an explosion of colour and creativity. The idea is that crafters come together in their community to add a splash of colour to school railings, park benches, anything you can hang a pompom on! Whether you crochet, knit, paint or quilt, this is your chance to get together with other creative folk and decorate your neighbourhood (but please ask permission from whoever owns the site of your proposed CraftBomb!). “We see the CraftBomb as a way to encourage groups and individuals to showcase their creativity, not behind closed doors, but in public spaces where anyone can stumble across their work and be inspired to join in!” says Cassandra Barron, marketing and events officer at Voluntary Arts Scotland. 14 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

Voluntary Arts Week isn’t just for crafters, it’s a celebration of all the arts, so that means music, dance and drama too. If your amateur dramatics company is working on a play, why not hold an open rehearsal so the public can come along and see what it’s all about?

FOR THE LOVE OF IT Cassandra says: “We want to nurture a better understanding of the important creative work that takes place week in, week out, right across the country, and encourage more people to take part, for the love of it!” For a free CraftBomb pack, or to add your show or exhibition to the list of events, go to voluntaryartsweek.org. Spread the word of your CraftBomb on Twitter using hashtag: #CraftBomb.

FEELING FAINT?

CARRY ON

NURSE We all get bumps and scrapes from time to time, some more serious than others. And who have we to thank for making us all better? We at Mayhem! love nurses, not least because they give us sweets and stickers for being brave boys and girls!

So join us on the wards in celebration of possibly the kindliest souls on the planet. Now, if only we could reach the buzzer...Nurse!

GOING WITH THE FLO

“I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practise my profession faithfully. I shall abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and shall not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I shall do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming The Nightingale Pledge, a variation of the to my knowledge in the practice of my Hippocratic Oath taken by newly-trained calling. I shall be loyal to my work and nurses, is also named in her honour. It’s devoted towards the welfare of those existed in at least three different forms since committed to my care.” its inception in 1893, having been revised in 1935 and replaced with the more modern Compare that to its revised modern Practical Nurse Pledge. Hands on hearts (and let’s face it, boring) counterpart and nice clear voices, then, and picture dear which you can find online at old Flo herself watching you proudly as you www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk. recite the following original pledge:

International Nurses’ Day is marked on 12th May, an important day on every ward sister’s calendar. It’s the birthday of Florence Nightingale, considered by many as the founding mother of modern nursing. She was dubbed ‘The Lady With The Lamp’, owing to her habit of making her rounds at night to check on wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. She also founded the nursing school at London’s St Thomas’s Hospital in 1860 (now part of King’s College London) upon her return from service.

FEELING FAINT?

SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES What you may not also know is that Hampshire has a part to play in the story too. Florence is buried at St Margaret’s Church in East Wellow in the Test Valley, and a special service is held annually on the Sunday after her birthday. Westminster Abbey also has a specially dedicated Nurses’ Chapel (dedicated in 1950 in memory of UK and Commonwealth nurses killed on duty during the Second World War), and a special service is staged each year in which a symbolic lamp is passed from one nurse to another and then on to the Dean, who places it on the High Altar as a neat bit of symbolism of the passing of knowledge from one nurse to another. The reality of nursing is about as far from Danny Boyle’s romanticised song and dance depiction of it in his 2012 Olympics opening ceremony (unless the NHS has somehow sneaked a clause into their contracts allowing them to do so on their rounds as they so wish), but we’re going to sneak it in anyway as a little treat for any sisters reading this… After all, what would we do without them, eh?

LOOK INTO MY EYES!

MYSTIC MAYHEM Just what is a psychic? Television shows and magazine articles often present them as people with some kind of special ‘gift’ – but we think that’s hogwash, and they’ve got more in common with those funnylooking weirdos you see at county fairs with tea-towels on their heads staring into fish bowls and telling you what you want to hear. But scoff no more, for you could soon be that weirdo, thanks to our resident mystic’s handy guide. Step into the tent, stare into Madame Mayhem’s crystal ball and all will be revealed... 18 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

LIFE LESSONS Step one in our handy ‘how to guide’ – dealing with a difficult customer. After all, some people will come straight out and give you their views on any given subject, no matter how tricky it might seem. But some will leave you to figure it out for yourself, making your job that much more difficult. Or so you’d think. Look into their eyes! If they follow your gaze like a dog after a bone, you have them, hook, line and sinker. They’re a liberal thinker, and are most likely trying to see your point, bless their little hearts, no matter how many tangents you go off on. If, however, someone gives you the dreaded gaze of steel, they’re most likely a conservative and don’t like being told what to do. It’s a bit like being a spin doctor for the Coalition government, really – a thankless task but also necessary. Perhaps the best advice we can give is if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull – a trick Madame Mayhem says she also learned from Cameron and Clegg. To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

LOOK INTO MY EYES!

ALL TOMORROW’S PARTIES Hey, being a psychic can be fun! Just because you have a spiritual gift, the fun doesn’t have to stop there. Parties can be an especially fertile breeding ground for the amazingly deep –look at what those around you are eating and drinking. Sweethearts are perhaps the easiest to find – there really is truth in that old saying ‘sweet as candy’ – people who eat a lot of sweet foods generally tend to be genuinely nice, if a little rotund. When it comes to the game of drink, there are several ways to look at it. Of course the easy way is to monitor everyone’s alcohol intake, but where’s the fun in just watching everyone else drink? Madame’s experience on the club circuit has taught her a few things, and she thinks you should know that those with light eye colours can handle more booze before they drop, while brown-eyed people are more sensitive to it, hitting the floor faster than John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Good news indeed if you fancy a drinking contest or dance-off.

LOVING SHOE Let’s say your gifts work their magic on a lucky man or lady. You take them back to your place for a coffee and they get comfortable and slip off their shoes – take heed. Those who go for what most would call ‘sensible’ shoes tend to be kind and agreeable, uncomfortable-looking pairs tend to be worn by calm, sensitive souls, while aggressive types tend to go for ankle boots (it makes a fantastic sound as they go stomping around, apparently). But the one to really watch out for is the seemingly nice-looking, well looked-after shoe. Who could wear such things, you gasp in horror! These house the feet of the anxious or clingy. Use this knowledge well, and take into account people’s feelings. The real gift in all of this is knowing when to use it at all!

MONEY MONEY MONEY Perhaps fittingly, the last item on our list is money. As the saying goes, it makes the world go round. But it might surprise you that seemingly poorer people nod and smile more, while the materially rich appear disinterested or distracted for the most part, with a few honourable exceptions.

$%3)'. 02).4 - ! 2 + % 4 ) . ' 05",)3().' 0(/4/'2!0(9

This behaviour is also common in people who just generally aren’t that nice, or have inflated self-esteem, though judge not lest ye be judged, after all with great power comes great responsibility.

So, now you’re set to go and read people faces, minds and wallets, but remember, they might just be reading yours!

Should statements – you try to motivate yourself by telling yourself that you ‘should’ do something. So you just end up feeling guilty if you don’t.

By taking the time to do this, you start to interrupt your negative thinking, you start to change your thought patterns and then you’re able to start changing your future! The mind is an incredible thing!

Emotional reasoning – if you feel a certain way, then it must be true!

Catastraphising – something minor happens and, all of a sudden, the world’s going to end. Things get blown out of all proportion.

The good news is you can start to break this way of thinking by writing down all your distorted and negative thoughts when you have them, identifying what type of thought it was from the list above and taking the time to consider what a more appropriate or positive thought would be.

PRINTERS & STATIONERS NCR Sets

Mind reading – you imagine others are thinking negatively about you, with no evidence! You jump to conclusions about situations.

Personalisation – you take responsibility for a negative event when there is no need to – you think it’s because of you and take responsibility for it. A mum might decide they have failed as a mother if their child gets a bad report at school, for example.

Invoice Books

Disqualifying positives – you filter out all the positives in your life, focussing exclusively on negative thoughts. If someone pays you a compliment, you immediately discredit it, a positive experience is deemed as ‘luck’.

Forms

Over-generalisation – perhaps you’ve tried something once and, OMG, failed. Now you believe you’ll never be able to get fit, pass that exam, find love etc.

Labelling and mislabelling – huge over-generalisations, for instance ‘I’m useless’ when you may have just made a mistake. If someone irks you with their behaviour you label them with an equally colourful label describing the event.

Business Cards

All or nothing thinking – you think you’re useless if you make a mistake or fail at something.

WISH YOU WERE HERE! and things started to hot up. Artists like Donald McGill had begun to craft what we would now recognise as the typical ‘saucy’ postcard, featuring stock characters (the put-upon husband, larger ladies and vicars, to name just three), double entendre and innuendo. And as every schoolboy knows, when someone asks you for a double entendre you give them one!

WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY

A CONSERVATIVE STAMP

POSTCARDS FROM ANOTHER AGE On the run up to the great British Summertime, you may not realise that we take our holidays in time and space… courtesy of the office TARDIS. Just last year we went back to 1937 and helped George Formby write With My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock, after all who doesn’t like a bit of sauce at the seaside? And it’s with that in mind that this year we’ve decided to fire up the old girl and travel back to the dawn of the risqué postcard. Step through the doors and try not to touch the console.

THE POST PERKS UP The Royal Mail first approved the sending of picture postcards in 1894 – the earliest designs included pictures of famous landmarks and photographs/drawings of celebrities, printed by Stewart’s of Edinburgh. At about the same time the steam train was taking off as an affordable mode 24 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

of transport, taking holiday makers to the seaside in droves, who of course would want to tell family and friends all about their adventures in Southsea or further north in Blackpool, as just two examples. Fast forward a few years to the early 1930s (as we did, we couldn’t resist),

McGill could have been forgiven for running to the hills come the election of a Conservative government in the early 1950s – concerned by what they saw as a sharp decline in the morals of our green and pleasant land, they launched a crackdown on this proud bastion of seaside tourism and went after dear old Donald, who they saw as a thorn in the side of decency. Thankfully in retrospect people have come to see them more as a bit of harmless fun, and the postcard emerged triumphant, even now seen by some as an art form thanks to a surge in popularity in the more liberalised atmosphere of the Swinging Sixties, a time we also enjoyed when we went back, even if we did have to install a randomiser to hide from Cliff Richard as he went about making ‘Summer Holiday’ – sorry to disappoint any nans reading this, but he’s actually a regeneration of the Master, and not to be trusted. Luckily the universe has us to ensure it still gets its yearly dose of good old-fashioned bawdy humour! BUDAPEST During the summer months Budapest makes a transformation unlike any other city in central Europe. From the hibernation of winter the city moves everything ‘al fresco’, which makes this a superb time to visit this historically beautiful city. Split symmetrically down the middle by the majestic Danube it’s almost perfectly formed with the old town, Buda, on the west of the river and Pest, the new town, on the east. Although not as cheap as it once was, Hungary’s currency is still the Forint which makes it a much cheaper option than other European city breaks using the Euro. Be sure to pack the sunscreen though, Budapest can get hot in July and August!

LISBON Often overlooked in favour of more popular city breaks Lisbon really does pack a punch. A condensed city centre makes wandering on foot an amiable pursuit. Base yourself within the Bairro Alto and have easy access to some of the most charismatic and lively bars in Europe and with a huge Brazilian influence this area can often come alive in the summer months as people spill out onto the streets. With beautiful seafood, an enchanting history and relatively cheap prices compared to the rest of the Eurozone, Lisbon always makes a top weekend getaway.

KRAKOW Located in the south of Poland, Krakow is a city unlike any other. Steeped in history, completely intact for generations, it remained unscathed from the worst of the ravages of the Second World War. Fast becoming a popular destination with Brits looking to stretch their pound it has an easily navigable city centre lined with street side bars and cafes which, due to the value of the pound, won’t set you back an arm and a leg, costing between £1–£1.30 for either a beer or a coffee. With Krakow being a small city packed with stunning Gothic architecture, if time is of the essence this could be the perfect city to spend a couple of days.

MAYHEM! MEETS… Michael Bublé is the most successful male solo artist of the 21st Century. Over the course of six studio albums and countless sell-out live shows, Bublé has wowed audiences with his distinctive style which builds on the legacy of big band and swing music from the era of Frank Sinatra and co. The Canadian singer-songwriter and actor, having sold over seven million copies of his last Christmas album, now follows this up with To Be Loved – a record for which he has written four of the songs, with the rest comprised of classic cover versions. The latest single from the new album, It’s a Beautiful Day, turns the love song on its head and celebrates the end of a relationship. Bublé explains how he came up with this idea: “I just sit down at the piano and it just comes out. The first words that popped up in my mouth were ‘I don’t know why you thought that you could hold me when you couldn’t get by by yourself’. As I wrote it, I thought ‘This is a great concept. I’m not writing a love song – it’s like, you know what? You messed with me and I’m glad you’re gone!’

“I played the song for my mother and sisters thinking they would say they didn’t like it but they loved it. Women relate to it and say ‘That’s about me and my ex-boyfriend’. So people are attracted to the song even though the message is not a positive one.” His distinctive style is very much set around one genre. This is quite deliberate, he says, for one main reason: “I absolutely love it. I’ve tried to be cool and tell people I love cool music but nothing moves me like listening to Frank Sinatra. People ask me how I can go out and sing other people’s songs. I love it. I get to continue the legacy of guys I completely idolise. I get to be a small part of re-introducing it to generations of kids out there, all over the world.” Melody is the main driver in Bublé’s passion for music. “Everything I do and love to listen to is melody-driven,” he says. “I don’t listen to a lot of modern, groove-driven music. It’s fine if you want to go to a club and dance to it. For me it’s a nice beat but where’s the melody?” This is clear in his writing style too. “I can’t play the piano, but I write. I punch all these chords. Everything I do is pretty syncopated. I write melodies the same way a horn player would play. I’ll swing stuff. It’s weird – it’s very me. If I played my co-writer 10 songs by different writers, he could tell which one was me.”

A man obviously very passionate about his music, he’s also committed to giving his fans what they want. “I really try to practise being in the moment and realising how lucky I am connecting with all those people,” he says, emphatically. “Who gets to throw a party for 20,000 people every night, and be the host? It’s very easy to get complacent but we have to remind ourselves that every night is important. For everyone who comes it’s a big night. It might be your 80th show, but you’ve got to give it 100% every time.” Bublé recently found himself comparing notes with another hugely successful pop star – Robbie Williams. “It’s nice to talk to a guy who’s been in the position that I’m in,” he smiles. “Robbie stands on stage in front of people and has moments of doubting himself. I wake up some mornings and feel like the biggest fraud in the world – how long until they find out? “Robbie is a superstar, one of the world’s greatest entertainers. It was nice for me to talk to him about having kids – what is life like; can you have both; is there a balance and all that stuff? He propped me up and said ‘Mike, it’s the greatest thing that will ever happen to you. You can have both. You can be a good dad and be good with your business’.” With such an incredible career so far, Bublé has still got a long way to go. “Now I’m 37 and as I get older I start to become more aware of my mortality – we all do,” he notes. “I doubt I’ll ever look back and think I could have been bigger or worked harder. I just want to make sure that I’m a good husband and a good dad. That’s probably what will end up being most important to me.”

MAYHEM! MOVIES…

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER

GUIDE Summer is rapidly approaching and judging from the weather we’ve had so far this year you’re not going to be outside sunbathing, or enjoying too many barbecues. As with last summer there’s a cavalcade of cinema releases clamouring for your attention, so why not stay dry and warm in the comforting glow of a blockbuster? As always, Mayhem! has got you covered; here’s a guide to eight of the most exciting looking summer blockbusters this year:

IRON MAN 3 Robert Downey Jr. returns for his first post-avengers stint as crime-fighting billionaire Tony Stark, combating Ben Kingsley’s international terrorist The Mandarin. As with all the recent crop of Marvel film adaptations, Iron Man 3 looks set to deliver on the action and special effects fronts; expect pretty explosions and multiple robotic super-suits!

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 The Fast and Furious franchise continues to gather speed; many previous cast members return, including at least one character killed off in a previous iteration. The street racing and heist committing action is enhanced by new villain Luke Evans, playing a ruthless ex-commando. He also has a tank. Which, in street-racing terms, seems a bit like cheating. 30 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS The follow-up to 2009’s successful and entertaining reboot, Star Trek Into Darkness sees the crew of the Enterprise go boldly in search of Benedict ‘Sherlock’ Cumberbatch’s murderously rogue federation agent, whose plans seem to involve blowing up a whole heap of spaceships. We at Mayhem! happen to think that those are the best kind of plans. To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

MAYHEM! MOVIES…

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY It’s scary to think that Monsters Inc. came out all the way back in 2001, but a new film is finally in the works: a prequel showcasing Mike and Sulley’s wild student days. The first film was an animated comedy masterpiece and Pixar very rarely make a film that isn’t worth watching.

MAN OF STEEL Another Superman adaptation; Man of Steel is hoping to improve upon the lacklustre reception of the last few by adopting the darker tone of the Dark Knight Trilogy. All superhero films could learn a thing or two from Christopher Nolan’s seminal series; Man of Steel could certainly be looking for inspiration in worse places.

AFTER EARTH After Men in Black 3 failed to redeem his fading career last year, we have high hopes that After Earth could finally turn around the fortunes of Will Smith. Director, Producer and co-writer M. Night Shyamalan must have his fingers crossed for a similar return to form, though it looks like both parties may be onto a winner with this sci-fi survival adventure. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

THE HANGOVER PART III The final entry to the Hangover series looks to up the insanity from the already high bench-mark set by the previous instalments; with the trailer alone featuring smothered chickens, decapitated giraffes and pig-masked gunmen. Just like an average night out in Guildhall Walk really.

PACIFIC RIM In a summer packed with reboots and sequels, we’re always happy to see an original property looking so good. Pacific Rim is the latest effort from cult horror director Guillermo del Toro, and seems to be a combination of Transformers and Godzilla; giant robots versus huge monsters from another dimension. Sounds good to us! MAY 2013 | MAYHEM!

INTERVIEW BY CHRIS DONNELLY

You had a quiet 2012, playing a European tour in February, and presumably readying your new album. Is there anything you’ve missed about being a band in that time? Oh definitely, touring! I’ve missed playing gigs week in, week out … it’s the main reason we’re in a band to play music in front of people, to have fun on stage and getting reactions from people. ‘We Met At Sea’ is your fourth album to date – do you think it brings a changed style from your previous albums as well, perhaps in the song writing and the way you’ve developed as a band? 34 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

In some respects yes. We have changed as musicians and are all better performers on our respective instruments. I find that this album is a mix of styles whereas on previous albums we would have generally one sound that would carry through the album. Song writing wise, we nodded back to our early stuff in terms of getting that infectious, instantaneous feel through the use of melody but there’s a certain maturity to it we have gained which you may have heard on ‘Up, Guards and At ‘Em’. The last few albums have been recorded all over the place; including Wales and New York. Did returning

to your hometown of Leeds this time change things at all, or maybe make you more nostalgic – it’s where it started with ‘Wait For Me’ after all? It certainly put us in a ‘back to your roots’ mindset. We have travelled the world but this time there was something nice about recording in our hometown again, with our own sound engineer and remembering what being in a band’s about. We tried to get that feeling back which we had when we recorded our first album in Leeds, where we had a point to prove and the stakes were high. In the end it worked well, we worked insanely hard.

A CATCH UP WITH…

“Your heart needs to be in what you are doing…”

You’ve mentioned that you wanted to regain that live sound and ethos with the album, sometimes using live takes. Did you find it a bit more challenging to record in this way, or were you all just making sure you’d rehearsed well before the recording process? Yeah, I mean we did A LOT of takes for most of the songs on there. We recorded most of the instruments together and tried to overdub as little as possible when it came to the core instruments. So it was a case of using one take with a good vibe to it but without too many mistakes. It’s harder than it sounds, Dave and Ryan

could be doing the best take of their life but then I could be physically or mentally fatigued on that take, especially if we’d already done 12 takes! We rehearsed well for the sessions but when you listen to the song coming through the studio speakers you may end up completely re-writing your part or re-arranging the song so then everything has to be rehearsed again! Talking about the last album from 2011, Up, Guards And At ‘Em, Matt voiced concerns at having felt as if you were “going against instincts” with it. What do you think led to you doing that, and how did you make it

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

feel more natural and avoid that this time round? We had written a lot of songs a certain way which became our first two albums and we wanted to do something different. Your heart needs to be in what you are doing and at that time we needed a change. ‘Up, Guards and At ‘Em’ was created by using melodies which are more subtle and the recording was made by putting each instrument to tape, piece by piece individually. To avoid that was simple: we went back to our instincts but obviously this record sounds more mature than our early records as we are all older and wiser! MAY 2013 | MAYHEM!

A CATCH UP WITH… It seems hard to believe it, but next year will see you reach a 10 year anniversary since you formed. Have you got any special plans or ideas to celebrate? We do have some plans which I shall keep a secret at the moment but I think what we should do is find out the anniversary of our first gig in Leeds and NOT play a gig that day. But just get together, drink some champagne and have a good chinwag. I think we have worked hard enough to chill on that day!

Are there any other moments you can recall where things have been particularly ‘rock star’; be it the old school breaking things in hotel rooms or something else? Ha, er, I’ve ripped a toilet off of the wall. I say ripped, Dave pushed me into it and I dragged it off to keep me upright. I say pushed, he nudged me and I wasn’t exactly there in body or mind after being under the influence for a few days. That was in a Japanese nightclub, they tried getting the money back the next day.

What have been some of your most treasured and memorable moments as a band so far? We’ve heard rumours of a lot of things, including a full-on fight with Kate Moss egging you on… That moment is quite memorable, getting chucked in the deep end with many celebrities a la Keanu Reeves, Bob Geldof, Kate Moss at our first ever festival (O2 Wireless), you know that’s going to end up with some of us in a fight we were excited. Other than that I’d say my most treasured moment is playing Leeds and Reading for the first time. We’d built up a bit of fan base but when we stepped out on stage at Reading and there were people trying to get into a full tent, that was something else. No scratch that, it’s Paul McCartney tapping his feet to ‘Take Her Back’.

Music as a whole has changed hugely in the time since you started; bands you once supported like The Holloways and Dirty Pretty Things have ended altogether. What do you think has been the secret or best way to stick together the way you guys have for so long? I think it is very important to stay good friends and stick together through thick and thin. The music business has a lot of up and downs just as any other business does. We’ve kept a good work ethic up and just continued to enjoy writing, recording and performing music.

36 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

In terms of the shift in music altogether, which has definitely been away from the kind of indie-rock that you started out with, what do you make of the shift from guitars to synths and computer production nowadays? I think a lot of it has no heart or soul and also some of it actually has no thought behind it whatsoever. Well the electronic music that’s on the radio waves anyway. But if you search there is some great electronic music. At the moment I’m liking Purity Ring, James Blake, Grimes, Crystal Castles etc. But in terms of what’s popular; the charts chops and change all the time, guitar music had gone silent chart wise in the early to mid 90s until Oasis came about. It runs in cycles.

Is there anything that you’re still ambitious and keen to achieve as a band? Yeah we would love to headline a major festival. You see some bands headlining and they just can’t put on the show or work the crowd. If you could give out an award to another band for ‘Best Album’ based on your own listening habits recently, who’d get it? The last album which I loved was Beach House’s ‘In Bloom’ but I don’t know if it got the credit it deserved. It’s amazing, the songs are so simple and there’s not very much actually going on but it doesn’t matter, there’s such depth to it and an atmosphere created using only really a vocal, organ and guitar. The record just keeps growing on you. Imagine your manager has just phoned up and told you you’re all allowed a three month holiday to go on a road trip together. Where are you heading and why? America. We recorded there for two months and we had probably the best time of our lives. We’ve played a lot of towns there but it’d be good to explore all the towns we haven’t been and maybe delve into Middle America. We can do this in a Cadillac convertible with a cassette player and lots of cool beer in the back! Other artists have started doing a lot of cool merchandise, and you’ve given fans a chance to have their names in the album artwork for ‘We Met At Sea’. What other merch would you really like to start making if you had the chance; home-brew maybe … some proper home-made jam even? Chutney; definitely chutney. It’s amazing I’ve been trying lots of different flavours made in Devon, we could do some funky flavours. But no, not pigeon flavour thank you very much! Don’t forget to check them out on 11th May at the Wedgewood Rooms!

Harping back to the days of lateEighties house music, this tune has had considerable success already after reaching the dizzy heights of number 2 in the UK charts. Its swirling synths and electronic bassline combined with instantly likeable vocals could see this tune straddle itself between both mainstream and underground music sensibilities. Certain to be a winner at any number of Mediterranean resorts from Ibiza to Malia it is instantly catchy, the making of a true summer hit. 38 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

Another track destined for the sand-strewn floors of a beachside cafe of Ibiza, this track is everything a summer track should be. The infectious beats backed up by A.M.E’s fine delivery should see this become a consistent club favourite. Having already seen commercial success in the UK after reaching number 1 in the official download charts, it will no doubt fill the clubs right up until the first signs of the Autumn chill. If the video is anything to go by then this track will be a force to be reckoned with a huge mass appeal across a huge audience.

PRIMAL SCREAM – IT’S ALRIGHT, IT’S OK

FRANK TURNER – RECOVERY DISCLOSURE (FEATURING ALUNAGEORGE) – WHITE NOISE

DUKE DUMONT FEAT. A.M.E – ‘NEED U (100%)’

If a song could be legitimately compared to a muddy Shropshire field in front of a few large speakers, with a cup of warm cider in your hand, surrounded by your best friends then this would be it. A song that, on first listen, instantly brings a smile to your face. Frank Turner, who has been around for over eight years as a solo performer always seems to have a knack at making strippeddown songs that are ripe for a sing-song, and this is another. The song, like most of Frank Turner’s material over the years is both fun and creative, making it an instantly likeable track that is ripe for those summer months spent on a blanket in the sun, or at least dreaming of it.

The boys are back, better than ever and with a revitalised sound that will have them attracting a younger crowd as well as keeping their regular fans just as happy. This track, off their upcoming new album, More Light, sees them adopt an approach to song writing that is more akin to songs off their third and most famous album to date, ‘Screamadelica’. With homage played to the bluesy rock of the early seventies combined with now standard gospel choir, this is Primal Scream at their infectious best and a track that is three minutes and forty-seven seconds of sunshine. If the temperamental British summer fails to materialise again over the next few months then sit indoors, put the kettle on and press play, you’ll be in the sweaty deep south before you know it.

A CHAT WITH… You started out by uploading your own covers on YouTube. How surreal was it to go from that to touring and getting signed? It’s getting more common, but it’s still not something many artists do! It was surreal I guess but the process was built over a long time, so it was like we were working towards it. Being signed this way really allowed me to work my music and experiment to the point where I knew exactly what I wanted to be before we did the deal, and I’m grateful for that! Your cover of ‘The Power of Love’ got seriously big over Christmas, not least because of those cute snowmen in the advert! What was it like hearing your cover get so much recognition and become a part of many people’s Christmas? It was an absolute honour to do the song for John Lewis, I was a big fan of the adverts and I worked so hard to get the opportunity to do it. The fact it went down well was just a lovely bonus. Is there anything in particular that really compels you to pick out songs to cover? It’s always random. Either songs I like or suggestions from fans. Your debut album is titled ‘English Rain’ – but aside from getting a lot of it, what was the idea behind the name? It’s a lyric in my song November. We used lots of props when shooting the artwork and it went with the umbrella shot, but we really decided to name it ‘English Rain’ after we recorded the strings on the album. It suddenly had this ‘English war-time’ vibe. And what can we expect from the album as a whole? Are there any surprises or songs that you’re keen to see people respond to? The album is a diary of the last few years of my life. Having a label has allowed me to fund sounds that I couldn’t do before. So I’m excited for people to hear new things.

In the past you’ve explained how each of your songs is a story in itself. Are there any older songs on the album that you now look back on that make you realise how much things have changed? Take Me Away is definitely a world away from who I am now. On some of your recent singles you play with a band as opposed to just yourself and a guitar. Had you always hoped to make your sound a lot bigger and maybe look at having more of a band-feel behind you? Yes of course. Obviously when making YouTube videos it’s more practical to just be acoustic, but I love playing and recording with a band. Looking back at some of your videos for those recent tracks, you often play out part of a love story – is this because your music is heavily influenced by love and romanticism, or are there other things that keep you inspired and creative? I think it’s just a coincidence that the singles we’ve released so far are about that. I don’t actually think there are any more on the album that are influenced by love and relationships at all! Mostly just life in general. You’ve just started your own record label – what’s it like being able to step back and work on behalf of other people’s music? I actually set it up when I was 17 to release my own music. When I got signed I was able to keep it so I’m using it to bring through people I really believe in. I think it’s important to only do it if I really believe in the artist I’m supporting, which makes it so much fun. All of a sudden there’s lots of talented young singer-songwriters around – Lewis Watson, Hudson Taylor, Orla Gartland and loads more. What do you think might have inspired so many fellow musicians to break out, in such quick succession?

We are all friends, literally all of us. I think success comes from all of us helping each other out and wanting one another to do well. If there was a piece of advice you could give anyone, either in music or just everyday life, what would it be? The advice I’d give myself could be completely wrong for another person. However I think just being yourself and living how you want to is a good place to start. It seems fair that we take a moment to give Ferris some of the limelight now. He’s got his own Twitter, comes to some of your shows, and brushes up well in a tuxedo – and he’s a ferret. How did you and possibly the most showbiz-ferret come together? A friend of mine moved into a smaller house and couldn’t take care of him anymore, so I took him in! It’s often mentioned how you grew up in a tiny village in Wiltshire. Is there anything you really miss now having moved to London where everything’s so much bigger and busier? I live in a really small lovely suburb of London. It’s only an hour away so I get the best of both worlds really. There were rumours lately that Ed Sheeran invited you on tour with him in Australia via text message. Are there any other big names in your ‘Contacts’ who you’re a fan of? He did! You know I don’t really have anyone ‘famous’ in my phone book. Even if they are famous, they’re just my mates really! It’s not been long since you finished touring here, and you’ve already announced the next tour in October. Are there any places you’re excited to return to or hope to enjoy and explore more this time round? I’ve actually never played Bournemouth or Liverpool so I’m looking forward to them.

CANOE DIG IT? WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY

A CANOE AND A DIDGERIDOO?

The Aborigines of Australia first made canoes from almost anything they could lay their hands on, including hollowed-out tree trunks. However, the oldest surviving example of what we would now recognise as a canoe today is most likely the Pesse canoe, built between 8040 and 7510 BCE (standing for Before the Common/Current/ Christian Era), measuring in at 298cm long and 44cm wide, fashioned from a Scotch pine log. It was discovered in 1955 during the construction of the A28 motorway in Holland, and can now be seen at the Drents Museum in Assen – and in an amazing experiment a replica was built by archaeologist Jaap Beuker and proven seaworthy by a canoeist in 2011. These and other examples of early canoes were popularly used for transport, though by the late 18th Century they had become primarily a sporting concern, particularly in Britain. In 1866 John MacGregor, barrister, boat designer, travel writer, distant relative of Rob Roy and artist, founded the Royal Canoe Club in London – following it up with the American Canoe Association for our cousins across the pond in 1880. 44 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

CANOES OF FIRE Flat water canoeing became a recognised Olympic discipline in 1936 in time for the Berlin Games, though it had been a demonstration sport in 1924 in Paris. If your ambition doesn’t stretch as far as making Team GB in time for Rio 2016, however, you could try slalom, marathon, or freestyle. If that doesn’t float your boat, have a go at ‘recreational’ canoeing, most commonly meaning a simple punt on your nearest lake, or fishing, which could offer the chance to test the old proverb ‘give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, give him a boat and he’ll sit in it and drink beer all day’. On the other hand you could try packing your water wings and heading for www.gocanoeing.org.uk or www.portsmouth-canoe-club.org (and no, they don’t just borrow the pleasure boats from Southsea) – you don’t even have to know the words to the Eton Boating Song, although the first line is endearingly chipper, so all together now... SHIPS AHOY!

REBIRTHING PORTSMOUTH’S ROYAL RELIC AT THE NEW MARY ROSE MUSEUM

When their world ended, our story began… The ship that captured the world’s imagination when she was raised from the seabed in 1982 is the only 16th Century warship on display anywhere in the world.

Thirty years after it was raised from the sea, the 16th Century Tudor navy warship is in its final years of preservation and the newly built museum environment will offer a tantalizing peep at life below decks. 46 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

Opening its doors at the end of May, the Mary Rose Museum is a fantastic, purpose built, three-storey museum, which will showcase not only the ship, but many of her 19,000 artefacts and will tell her story and those of the crew. It’s been a labour of love for the team who, since its discovery in 1971, have worked tirelessly to give the ship a fitting resting place. Built here in the dockyard in 1510, the Mary Rose sank as she led the English fleet out of Portsmouth Harbour in 1545. Boarding netting trapped most of the crew on deck and only 30 men survived from the 500 strong crew.

Preserving itself in the mud, the hull lay at rest until its rediscovery in the 1970s and the long process of raising it began. The Mary Rose Museum opened in 1984 and was viewed lying in a dedicated ship hall. During construction of the museum, the conservation of the hull continued inside a sealed ‘hotbox.’ The complete conservation will still take another three years, so the new museum was built over the ship in the dry dock. When the polyethylene glycol sprays are finally turned off and the process of controlled air-drying will begin, by 2016, the hotbox will be removed and for the first time since 1545 the ship will be revealed dry. Until then, peep boxes will allow you to look at the ship during its final drying stages.

SHIPS AHOY!

SO WHAT DIFFERENCES WILL THE NEW MUSEUM MAKE? Well, the old and the new museums are incomparable and when you see it, you will agree, it cost (£27 Million – yes, an awful lot) and delay will be worth it. Not only a museum, it will be an international center for maritime archaeology and provide better facilities for education and outreach. With so much to view, it’s impossible to take it all in with one viewing and there are further developments due. With a high input from many of the team, it’s clear that their dedication will help to make it a world-leading museum which enhances its setting in the Historic Dockyard, next to The Victory. From clothing to longbows, musical instruments to cannons, the most comprehensive collection of Tudor artefacts in the world are displayed sympathetically and for the first time, using forensic science, crew members will be brought to life giving visitors the chance to come face to face with the carpenter, cook, archer and even the ship’s dog, ‘Hatch’! Members of the team will regularly be available to give a valuable insight to the work behind the scenes as well as offering information and answering questions. When the Mary Rose arose from the sea bed, all those years ago, who knew that Portsmouth would welcome home one of its own and make sure it would be given a new lease of life. It’s a wonderful addition to Portsmouth’s heritage that can and should now be enjoyed and accessed by all. The Mary Rose Museum opens to the public on 31st May. FESTIVITIES 2013 Almost upon us, Portsmouth Festivities this year promises to be the best yet. Now in its fourteenth year, the Festivities celebrates the arts, culture and heritage of the City of Portsmouth. Established by the Partnership Portsmouth initiative in 1998, the Festivities aspires to celebrate Portsmouth’s rich heritage and showcase a packed programme of over 70 events. Each June, the 10-day festival offers something exciting for everyone. Music, theatre, dance, art, literature, talks, film, outdoor events; plenty to do for children and families. The festival will take place from 21–30 June in many of the city’s unique historic venues with almost half of the events free to attend. As well as creating opportunities for new and local artists, the Festivities are thrilled to bring acclaimed performers such as the King’s Singers, Breakin’ Convention of Sadlers Wells in London, Tubular Bells for Two, Michael Rosen and Kate Mosse to Portsmouth for the festive celebrations. At the heart of this year’s Festivities is the world premiere of a musical work specially commissioned to mark the opening of the new Mary Rose Museum.

Local schools and community choirs come together to perform jazzed-up shanties and toe-tapping Tudor tunes in the splendid setting of the Guildhall hosted by local actor, comedian and star of Outnumbered and Mock the Week; Hugh Dennis. Don’t miss Alexander L’Estrange’s musical extravaganza, Ahoy! With an expected audience of 20,000 people, the Festivities has grown in stature and this year will include for the first time, a singer/songwriting competition for the 17–25 year olds with an amazing prize package which will support and develop their profile. An exciting arts trail through Spice Island, is a unique opportunity for local artists – professional or non-professional – to showcase their work to members of the public in the historic venues of Old Portsmouth: The Royal Naval Club, Royal Albert Yacht Club, Portsmouth Cathedral, The Square Tower and The Round Tower provide the backdrop. IMPACT DANCE is an exciting programme of dance events and workshops taking place throughout the city. Highlights include free performances by dancers from the world’s leading hip hop dance

theatre company, BREAKIN’ CONVENTION of Sadlers Wells, London. Education and community are at the core of the Festivities – Portsmouth schools will be offering workshops and performance opportunities throughout the city and audiences will be encouraged to get involved in creative projects. Roll up for the finale event; a celebration of life on wheels. Portsmouth Festivities and the Portsmouth Lions invite everyone to bring their bikes, blades, scooters, wheelchairs and skates to Castle Fields between 10am–12noon and decorate them carnival-style with the help of local artists. A wheeled carnival along the seafront will close the festivities in style. Bring along your family and friends and join in the fun as Portsmouth bursts into life with arts and culture this summer! 21–30 June. For further details visit: www.portsmouthfestivities.org.uk

ELEMENTARY MY DEAR!

INTERNATIONAL HERITAGE Portsmouth City Council is the custodian for this outstanding international heritage. The collection was a bequest to Portsmouth in 2004 from the Conan Doyle scholar and collector Richard Lancelyn Green.

EXHIBITION WORKSHOPS The first big thing this year will be the 10 exhibition workshops, which are to be set up in Portsmouth schools and community centres during the summer and where different themes chosen from the vast Green collection will be on display. Judith Stinton and Kate Hebditch, better known as the two partners of Common Heritage, have been appointed Exhibition Co-ordinators for “Sharing Sherlock – the story of a Pompey Lad”. Between them they have 30 years’ museum experience and have particular expertise in interpreting literary and biographical exhibitions. They also have experience of working with community groups and volunteers in the creation of interpretative materials – exhibitions, labels, publications etc – and in training them in best practice. They believe that the wide range of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s interests and the extent of the Richard Lancelyn Green collection give a great deal of scope for exhibitions.

ONLINE COLLECTION The next exciting project will be the online collection which fans all around the world can access. Cllr Lee Hunt, Cabinet Member for Culture believes that “An online exhibition also means we can share all the wonderful collection pieces more widely and make them much more accessible. We want to capitalise on people’s appetite for the world famous literary detective and offer immediate, interactive material.”

AN ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS There are plans to recruit volunteers, each of whom will become key members of the project, receiving training to support on various elements including the delivery of the schools’ workshops and the development of the online exhibition.

BIG GAY WEEKEND AWAY

WRITTEN BY LEWIS SHAW

FLYING THE FLAG!

With the International Day Against Homophobia coming up on the 17th May, we thought we’d throw the naughty list in the bin and give you a whistle stop Rainbow Bus tour of the countries that deserve your colourful economy this summer, to make sure the Flintstones aren’t the only ones having a gay old time.

USA

Admittedly Uncle Sam’s relationship with travelers from the gay community has hardly been a simple one over the years, but compared to other countries around the world, it’s a pretty good life being out and gay in the USA. With iconic holiday destinations like New York, Walt Disney World in Florida and the famous beaches of California, we’ve never heard a visitor say that the United States wasn’t worth the visa.

BRAZIL

SWEDEN INDIA Rest assured that if colourful theatrics are something you look for in a holiday then you can look no further than the home of Bollywood: India. One of the few Eastern countries to abolish laws against gay couples, India is one of the more forward thinking holiday destinations to rise out of the heat, entertaining holiday makers with the hustle and bustle of Bombay and the grand architecture of iconic spots such as the Taj Mahal. 52 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

If India isn’t exactly your climate, you might find yourself more attracted to the quaint streets of Stockholm, Sweden. Widely regarded as one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world, Sweden is a must-see for all you angel-headed hipsters, with streets filled with record shops, bookshops, and a fabulously chic street fashion scene – and if it’s too cold out, Sweden is also the homeland of genius films and series such as Wallander and The Millennium Trilogy.

Wising up in recent years to the power of the pink pound, local businesses in Sao Paulo saw a 25% rise in revenue during the 2011 LGBT pride event – and with the upcoming Olympics, what better a thing to do than make sure you’ve seen every sight before it comes on television? With a wide variety of sandy beaches and bright blue ocean, over the years Brazil has earned its name as a dream-like tourist destination on a continent that is mostly gay-friendly.

THE NETHERLANDS Calling Amsterdam the gay capital simply doesn’t do it justice: The first country in the world to legalise gay marriage, the home of the world’s first gay and lesbian bar, and the world’s only pride event to be held entirely on water, Amsterdam is widely accepted as one of the most friendly and welcoming cities on the planet – and they make no exceptions to the gay community.

POP YOUR CHERRY!

YOU SAY TOMATO I SAY TOMATO... WRITTEN BY CHRIS MORLEY

60 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

POP YOUR CHERRY! Would you be so kind as to join us in the Mayhem! greenhouse? We could use a hand cultivating the tomato plants, you see! Redder than the average clown’s nose and juicy too, they add that little bit of spice that makes life extra nice, which is where British Tomato Week (20th–26th May) comes into full bloom! So put on your gardening gloves and come on down, taking care to mind the gnomes on your way of course.

A VEGETATIVE STATE Ah, you made it! Don’t be alarmed by our classical Hollywood musical-style gardening attire – it’s just our way of putting the glam back into doing chores, as well as paying homage to ‘you say tomato, I say tomato’ – the line comes from George and Ira Gershwin’s ‘Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off’, written for the 1937 Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers classic musical comedy Shall We Dance? And indeed, dancing does put the fun into tending the tomato plants (or solanum lycopersicum, to give them their collective Latin name). Somewhat confusingly, the tomato is technically a fruit, though we tend to think of it as a vegetable. One thing we do know for sure, though, is that the average tomato weighs between 102–105 grams, and tastes pretty good too!

RED JOINS WHITE AND BLUE Tomatoes first spread to merry old England in the 1590s, and one of the first cultivators was John Gerard, who published his ‘Gerard’s Herbal’ in 1597, one of the first treatises on the tomato to be written on these shores. He plagiarised much of his work from a similar text by Rembert Dodoens, a Flemish counterpart – so much for the gentleman gardener, you might say. But it wasn’t until the 18th Century that the tomato was deemed edible in Britain and its colonies in North America, as Gerard had asserted that the fruit was poisonous (it does contain very low levels of a toxin called tomatine) – no need to spit out that cheese and tomato sandwich, though, as it’ll do you no harm! The British Tomato Growers Association (www.britishtomatoes.co.uk/tomatoweek) lead the way in preaching the juicy red gospel, and you could say they have plenty of greenhouse churches in which to do so, their parish stretching far and wide – the largest UK tomato glasshouse covers 26.5 acres, but is currently being extended to 44.5 acres, or 18 hectares. That’s the size of 25 international football pitches! Why you’d want to have a kickabout in there nobody knows, and you don’t have to be Einstein to work out that using a tomato as a ball can only end in disappointment (unless you’re clever and simply paint a standard ball red), but score yourself a sandwich, salad, or even a tomato juice for best results.

FIGHTING THE MUNCHIES!

KEEPING HUNGER AT BAY Are you trying to lose a few pounds for when summer makes its long awaited appearance, but find yourself plagued with those pesky cravings that destroy your diet by Monday afternoon? Well here’s a few hints that will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, without stomach rumblings getting in the way of your goal.

BREAKFAST It’s easy to dismiss porridge as boring ‘prison gruel’, but it is absolutely packed with vitamins, minerals and an amazing amount of protein and fibre. Being a great source of slow releasing energy, it genuinely keeps you fuller, for longer. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be plain and boring either. With great flavours, from mango and passion fruit to sweet cinnamon, porridge tastes great AND keeps you going throughout the morning. 62 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

FILL UP ON FRUIT

SMALL CHANGES HUNGRY? HAVE A DRINK Making a few small changes

If you begin to feel peckish between meals, instead of reaching for the dreaded cookie jar, only to feel immensely guilty later on, grab some fruit! As they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Although it’s advised to eat five pieces of fruit and veg a day, there is no limit! So fill up on your favourite fruit, which will in turn deliver an abundance of health benefits.

Never underestimate the power of a glass of water! We should all drink around eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated, yet people often mistake thirst for hunger. When we think we are hungry, we are in fact actually just dehydrated a lot of the time. So instead of grabbing the nearest snack, first try drinking some water and see if that cures the cravings.

to your diet can not only keep you full up for longer, but also provide you with all the nutrients for a longer, healthier life. Swapping the crisps for nuts and berries, or the chocolate bar for a banana, will make a world of difference. Remember that it is okay to treat yourself once in a while, and is not the end of the world if you have that occasional takeaway on a Friday night!

A GLOOMY ECONOMIC OUTLOOK... IN YOUR 20’S As reports of the economic downturn grow increasingly into talks of a second depression, where does this leave the 20-somethings? MAKING THE MOST…

ENTER AN EVENT

WWW.MOTHERKELLYSFISHANDCHIP S.CO.UK

Whether it’s training on murky Monday mornings in preparation for that first ever 10k or taking on Oxfam’s 100km Trailwalkers challenge, preparation is free and the entry fee is, most of the time, relatively modest, ranging anywhere between £5 and £45 per running event to £60 for Trailwalkers. As with any physical exertion it will keep you healthy in both body and mind and, more importantly, will help you rein in the weekend spending as you focus on drinking less and training more.

START COOKING! Most people know how to cook a little bit, from beans on toast to a basic Sunday roast but now is your time to actually become a really good cook. Nothing impresses more than someone who can cook good grub for a large group of people and without the responsibility of children you have the time to do it. It takes practice and a good palette but with prior planning it can be a fun and cheap hobby. Especially if you get your mates round to help you enjoy your new and scrumptious creations.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER All the way through school, teachers, tutors and careers advisors told you to do volunteering work to add to your CV, which is correct. But volunteering can be an interesting and fun way both to meet other like-minded people and do something beneficial for the most disadvantaged. There are numerous websites that provide details of all different kinds of volunteering opportunities that enable people of all ages to match their skills to the right opportunity.

START A SMALL BUSINESS Despite some small, initial costs, starting a small business can be rewarding financially. Get on the look-out for old, but potentially attractive pieces of furniture, give them a respray and a clean-up and sell them on for a small profit. That is the theory, in reality small enterprises take a while to take off but in the meantime it unleashes your creative drive, gives you the opportunity to meet other people and above all, is a low-cost way to spend your time doing something constructive.

TRAVEL Travelling in the UK has never been as expensive. However, that doesn’t mean to say that travel has to be expensive all of the time. If booked in advance, rail fares can still be extremely low for some days on certain routes, wiping as much as 75% off the regular ticket price. You could also start reconnecting with your local area, seeking out the weird and the unique, all within a short train or car journey.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS!

WHEN IS IT? It’s being held from 21st to 25th May in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital in London. It’s organised by the Royal Horticultural Society who have been holding flower shows in London since 1833. This year’s is the 100th to be held at Chelsea.

IT’S A BIT GRAND THOUGH ISN’T IT?

WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

Maybe, but anyone can go… around 157,000 attendees every year to be exact. However, only members of the RHS can attend on the first two days. You could argue, however, that only season ticket holders get to see their favourite football clubs regularly. Gardening is enormously popular with no social or age divides – hence the event’s popularity.

IN FULL BLOOM THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

CAN ANYONE EXHIBIT THERE? Anyone can apply. You don’t need to be an Alan Titchmarsh. In 2009, James May, the bloke with the long hair from ‘Top Gear’ had an exhibit at the show, entirely made of plasticine!

Whether you’re a window box gardener DID IT WIN AN AWARD? or have a few hundred acres to play No. But it showed that around with, the Chelsea Flower Show the RHS have a sense of And May has is a must if you want your green fingers humour. since admitted he isn’t into tickled with some gardening inspiration. gardening, saying his main role is standing in the Mayhem! puts on its wellies and gets doorway and saying: down among the herbaceous borders... “that looks nice”. 66 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

SO WHAT AWARDS ARE THERE? There are five categories in total and 11 special awards, including Best Show Garden, Best City Garden and the RHS Presidents Award. But that’s not all... They also have a Plant of the Year – last year it was the Digitalis Foxglove ‘Illumination Pink’. There was even a Product of the Year – won for a framework design that enables gardeners to easily build cages for growing fruit.

CAN YOU BUY THE PLANTS? Yes, but only at the end of the last day and, be warned, it gets a bit rough: imagine the January sales only with plants – which are heavier and far more cumbersome than clothes! Better just to go and look.

HOW DO I GET THERE? Train up to Victoria mainline station then a walk of about a mile – or you can get the tube to Sloane Square. Bear in mind non-members can get in on 23rd–25th May only – and you need to buy a ticket in advance, no entries are permitted at the (garden) gate. Alternately, watch it on the BBC!

Gardener A MAYHEM! EXCLUSIVE

Monty Don has been gardening for over 50 years. In advance of this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC in June, he talks about his passion for organic growth and reveals a problem that needs urgent attention.

ONE TO ONE WITH…

“Concentrate all your efforts into growing healthy plants in healthy soil. Don’t worry about slugs and snails and pests and diseases…” With a passion for and knowledge of gardening built up since he started tending his family’s large vegetable garden at the age of six, Monty Don has become one of Britain’s best loved personalities and an authority on organic gardening in particular. Set to take to the stage on the Saturday and Sunday of BBC Gardeners’ World Live (at the NEC, Birmingham, from 12–16 June), alongside other gardening experts and stars, Monty will be giving a number of talks in the celebrity theatre and in the new Kitchen Garden area, as well as signing books and generally chatting about his garden and offering tips and advice.

and those looking to follow in his footsteps will be given plenty of food for thought. His advice for the perfect organic garden seems to be based on common sense and paying attention. “Look, listen, watch, see what’s going on,” he says. “Gardening is not something you impose on a space; it’s something you do with a space. You have to work with nature from day one. Where does the sun rise? Where does the sun set? Where does the wind blow from mainly? Which are the dry bits? Which are the wet bits? What’s growing well?” There is some detective work involved too, he says. “Take stock of what is there even if to the untrained eye that’s not much. Everything will tell a story.”

Everything in the garden – every insect, every bird and every plant – works together, Monty explains. “They are all inter-related in a way that we are only beginning to learn about. Every time you take something away or damage something, there will be a knock-on effect. Most of the time you won’t know what that knock-on effect is. Think of the bigger picture.” This thinking extends to a big issue which needs more attention. With the UK government helping to stop a proposed ban on the use of neonicotinoid pesticides, as patron of the Bees for Development Trust, Monty is a vocal critic of what he calls “a disaster” and the lack of interest in the environment from the leading politicians: “The evidence we have is that neonicotinoids are at the very least potentially harmful to bees and there is good evidence from a study which shows that through uptake of the pollen from plants, they are damaging bees’ homing systems so bees gather the pollen and basically get lost between getting the pollen and going back to their hives.”

His passion for growing edible plants Monty is also candid about the organically is obvious. “It’s much, importance of being positive about much better for the whole ecosystem,” a garden rather than dwelling on he says. “Gardens are only part of the any problems – real or perceived. whole natural world, of which humans “Concentrate all your efforts into are just one part. The main point of growing healthy plants in healthy soil. organic growing is to do as little harm Don’t worry about slugs and snails and as possible and to work in tune with pests and diseases,” he urges. nature as much as you can while at the “The best analogy as a human being: same time growing as delicious and if you want to be a superb, healthy healthy food as possible. BEAT THE COMPETITION! For the first-time job seeker, interviews can be a daunting task. With Costa Coffee recently receiving over 1,700 applications for eight positions, competition is fierce. Read these top interview tips to increase your chances of gaining that sought after retail summer job.

GET THE

JOB W RITTEN BY ROBERT HEWITT

GOOGLE THEM Interviewers like applicants to do their research. Before the interview, your new best friend is the humble search engine. In the endless matrix of web pages, the company will have a website. Read their ethos, understand their aims, and impress the interviewers with your understanding. Knowledge is power after all.

WEAR THEIR UNIFORM Sounds simple, but interviewers will look at how you dress. Subconsciously they will see you as part of the team if you are wearing similar attire to their own employees. That does not mean stealing an employee’s uniform – you will get a jail sentence, not a job – but give them an idea of how you will look as part of their team.

PRETEND TO BE A SPY Retail is very much about customer service. You are an undercover operative, infiltrating the establishment, with the main aim of getting served by the manager. They lead their team by example, so gather information about how they meet, greet, serve and understand their customers. This information is beneficial when you get asked: “How would you give exceptional customer service?”

PRACTICE YOUR FLEXIBILITY When asked whether you are flexible, be honest. There is nothing more mentally draining for a manager who employs flexible people, who bring their own working guidelines. If you have prior commitments, then explain they can be rearranged, with notice. For the interview rookie, these top tips are essential when attending interviews. The competition is fierce, and you have to stand tall to get into retail. Aim to impress, and that coveted position will be yours. Good luck! 70 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

HEADS DOWN!

ASSOCIATION If you’re like me, so much trivial information takes up too much space in your brain, so that the really important stuff tends to leak out. So, why not use all those useless facts to your advantage? For example, associating number and words with birthdays or pictures can really help the finer details stick. And you might even remember to buy your Dad’s birthday card this year too!

REVISION

TIPS

Where did the time go? You’re still finding your feet after a year of studying, partying and playing the field, but now final exams are right around the corner and it’s time to hit the books. Problem is, revising is HARD! I know… I tried it once. Those 17 minutes have, however, officially qualified me as the Mayhem! expert on revision techniques, so I’ve thrown myself into exhaustive research for all my crammingchallenged comrades out there to come up with some helpful hints and tips. 72 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

Yes, it’s a real word! Mnemonics are memory aids using the initial letters to make a word you need to remember. For example: SMART objectives: Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Realistic; Targets. Clever eh?

COPYING No, not that type of copying! We at Mayhem! don’t condone cheating of any kind. By copying, I simply mean typing out your hand-written notes onto your computer. This active method of studying allows you to not only review your notes, but to organise them more efficiently as well. They’ll also be legible, which is a real bonus if your handwriting is anything like mine, and you can always sell them to next year’s newbies! If you didn’t actually take any notes, then maybe you should consider…

This one’s for the creative types in the crowd – random facts have been proven to stick in the better when they are put into verse. So, channel your inner Shakespeare and get your groove on with that Quantum Physics book: ‘Planck theorised constantly, Duality came from Bohr. Einstein added relativity, Unified field and more.’ One unfortunate bit of irony though… this method is not quite so effective if you’re actually studying poetry!

PRAYER: Get out those rosary beads, rub Buddha’s belly, send a solemn ‘A men’ up to the skies… whatever it takes to bring you inner peace and enlightenment. Because sometimes the best thing to do is remember that, in the grand scheme of things, your final exams pale in comparison to the vast mysteries of life.

BACK TO THE FUTURE!

1999 THINGS WE STOPPED DOING IN

Remember all the fuss everyone made about the millennium? Computer systems around the world would crash, nuclear power stations would go into meltdown and aircraft would, in an en-masse ballet of falling metal, plummet from the sky. Yet here we all are now. And nothing much has changed. Or has it? Mayhem! pops back to the later years of the 20th Century and discovers 20 things that we all did then – but barely anyone does, uses, or knows about now...

LEG WARMERS Still a mystery. Most people managed to keep their lower legs warm with socks.

MAZDA RX-7 Mazda threw off the shackles with this beauty – then reverted to tedious type. A true car of its time.

BIG MOUTH BILLY BASS THE GENERATION GAME

A wall mounted fish that sang. Let’s leave it there.

Uber cheesy BBC family based quiz show. In an era of new versions and reboots it has stayed, thankfully, hidden.

DOT COM BUBBLE The rise and rise of internet companies. Swiftly followed by the dot com bust. 74 MAYHEM! | MAY 2013

BACK TO THE FUTURE!

TOP OF THE POPS

BASEBALL CAPS

Watched by millions in the 80s and 90s. Now regarded as cutting edge, musically, as Justin Bieber – hopefully he’ll go the same way.

Their final fashion comeback was in the 1990s – when one was to wear them back to front. How we all laughed.

TAMAGOTCHI Poorly pixilated virtual pets that died if you ignored them. Now extinct.

LINE DANCING A choreographed (apparently) dance with repeated steps in which people danced in rows, executing identical steps at the same time. Now restricted to draughty village halls in deepest Norfolk.

RADIO RENTALS Where you went to pay the monthly rent on the TV and video recorder. Mass ownership of such items dispatched these glorified pawnbrokers into history.

MAGIC EYE BOOKS Page after page of migraine inducing pictures of nothing – but in which a ‘real’ one was supposedly hidden. Which, of course, it wasn’t.

FURBYS

Hideous owl-like creatures that were a ‘must have’ toy worldwide. Fourteen million of the little rascals were sold in 1999. Most now reside in people’s lofts, thankfully forgotten.

POCKET CALCULATOR

LACE FINGERLESS GLOVES Made popular by Madonna in the 1980s. She prefers the huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ look now. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

As much a ‘must have’ at the time as a decent mobile is now. Even if you didn’t understand most of the symbols.

ROLLERBLADES You may catch sight of these in Regents Park occasionally. But the people wearing them are desperately sad and need help. MAY 2013 | MAYHEM!

DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!

SODA FOUNTAIN An oldie but a classic! You need a packet of Mentos mints and a two litre bottle of fizzy drink. Add the Mentos to the liquid and stand well back as fizzing carnage ensues! What’s the science? Carbon dioxide is pumped into fizzy drink bottles using lots of pressure – while water molecules, strongly attracted to each other, cling together, surrounding the bubbles of gas. The surface tension is so strong, most of the gas stays suspended in the liquid, and cannot expand to form more bubbles. Mentos contain gum Arabic – the proteins of which break the surface tension of the water molecules, releasing the Co2 gas… leading to the frothy reaction.

EGG IN A BOTTLE You’re going to put a hardboiled egg in a bottle, but for the magic to happen, make sure your egg is wider than the opening of that bottle! Light a match and put it in the bottle. Then place the egg on top of the bottle and watch it get sucked in!

SCIENCE WRITTEN BY EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE

IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!

or garden!

What’s the science? The burning match heats air molecules in the bottom. They move away from one another and some air gets out of the bottle. When the flame goes out they move closer together again, but the air that escaped can’t get back in as the egg is in the way! Thus the pressure of air outside the bottle is so great that it pushes the egg into the bottle!

An easy one this. You will need a lemon, some plain paper and an iron – yes gents, they do have a use. Use the juice from the lemon to write your message on the piece of paper and let it dry. That’s right, all you have is a blank piece of paper. But then heat it with the iron... and voila…the message is plain for all to see! What’s The science? The acidity in the juice weakens the paper. Hence when the paper is heated and it discolours as a result, the weakened paper where the lemon juice is discolours more quickly – revealing the message! Ta dah!
