Dani Cooper – “Yeah I definitely think you can be friends with the opposite sex without an attractions…” Philip Hunt – “I ’m sure there are some people that can make it work. If you like someone enough to be good friends, you probably like them enough to fall for them…” Chelsea Leigh – “I think many couples cannot be friends with their exs, but I am friends with all my exs and its something that is not normally an issue with my partner at the time! THEATRE WITH A DIFFERENCE‌ CHECK OUT WWW.WRONGCROWDTHEATRE.CO.UK Why were you so captivated by the story?

I loved the idea that disobedience and a refusal to conform might ultimately be the thing that gets you where you need to be going. It’s also full of such fabulous, strange imagery and unexpected turns to the story. It keeps you on your toes.

Total Theatre Awards Nominated 2011

Hannah, you’re the show director, and Rachel you design and direct the puppets‌ how did you both meet?

We met working on a children’s opera called The Jailer’s Tale, with about 120 young people in it, as director and designer, two years ago. We immediately had a really great collaborative relationship and wanted to carry on making work together. How did the name ‘ The Wrong Crowd’ come about?

It’s a perfect example of why collaborating is so brilliant. We were brainstorming ideas around teenage rebellion and I said, “like falling in with the wrong crowd or‌â€? and Rachael said, “That’s it – The Wrong Crowdâ€?.

MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

Can you describe the story of ‘ The Girl with The Iron Claws ’ in a sentence‌

A fearless, wild girl dares to follow her heart’s desire, deep into the woods and beyond. Where does the story of ‘ The Girl with the Iron Claws ’ originate?

It’s a Norwegian folk-tale which is usually known as “Valemon, the White Bear King, though in time-honoured tradition we’ve also made a few of our own changes to the story. I first heard a version of it from a wonderful storyteller called Martin Shaw, sitting around a woodburner on Dartmoor.

How does this fairytale differ from ones we may have grown up with?

You’ll probably recognise lots of classic motifs and the story almost certainly shares its roots with Beauty and the Beast, but it’s a bit more twisting and epic. Also if you grew up with the Disney versions of fairytales, or some of those from children’s collections, this might strike you as keeping some of the darker and more sexual elements than you remember from bedtime! What does the use of puppets bring to the performance?

Hopefully wonder and playfulness – when puppetry works it’s like a fantastic game that is played between the audience and the actors, breathing life together into an inanimate object. There are also things that we can do with puppets that it would be difficult to do in any other way and because they aren’t ‘real’ we project so much more onto them as an audience.

To advertise in Mayhem! Magazine call us on: 023 9229 4408

THEATRE WITH A DIFFERENCE… CHECK OUT WWW.WRONGCROWDTHEATRE.CO.UK Do the puppets have personalities of their own, or are they just props?

They definitely aren’t just props. They are characters in their own right and we do all the same detailed work on them as we do on the characters played by actors. They have names too – one of them, through some bizarre twist of events in the rehearsal room, ended up being called ‘Broland’. You’ll have to guess which.

tools that only live theatre can offer. We’re also not in any way against theatre that plays with all the wonderful possibilities offered by technology – it’s just that right now, as a company, we want to make work that asks the audience to engage their imaginations and to fill in the gaps with us. It’s a different creative choice and it’s one that we’ll make each time we have a new story to tell.

Definitely the person – character has to come first. Having said that, because we work very instinctively, Rachael will also discover a lot about the character by making the puppet, just as I will by writing the script and so we stay open to surprises. We don’t necessarily always have very fixed ideas of how it will emerge.

Were there any complications with the puppets, any heads falling off?

Did the Edinburgh Festival offer a test run before the big show?

How do you choose what to re-work?

Rachael makes them robust enough to survive the shows and travelling in between. Because we made our Edinburgh show very quickly there was a famous incident of the sister’s arm falling off in the middle of a show, but there was some admirable improvisation all around to deal with it!

The Girl with the Iron Claws is our first show as The Wrong Crowd and we made it for the Edinburgh Festival last year in its own right. Of course, as a new company, your hope is that the show might have a life afterwards but we had no idea that it would take off in the way that it did. We took the show to Edinburgh to test out what sort of work we might make and to develop creatively as well as to start to find an audience for our work.

Again, I think it’s instinct and it was brilliant in Edinburgh, being able to watch the show in front of many different audiences and feel what worked and what didn’t. In the end it comes down to personal taste but we had so much really useful feedback and responses from audiences, we came away from Edinburgh with a pretty clear feel for what could be better.

with the puppets?

All of the actors in The Girl With the Iron Claws play various characters as well as puppeteer other characters, so they were cast for their versatility. They’re brilliant at juggling lots of different characters as well as operating different puppets throughout the course of the show, so I wouldn’t say it was hard – they’re great performers, but it’s certainly a marathon show for them to perform and they sweat buckets! What qualities do you look for when recruiting for The Wrong Crowd?

Playfulness, versatility, openness and a natural feeling for the puppetry, although they don’t necessarily have to have worked with puppets before. I think if they hated these sorts of stories too, that might also be a problem! Your production echoes back to traditional story telling. What are your thoughts on bigger theatre productions? Do they lose touch with the real theatre aspect?

I don’t think scale is the issue – I think it’s about embracing all the amazing

What have you tweaked from the original…

We’ve made some new puppets, clarified areas of the story and darkened some moments, including bringing in a new song when our heroine is lost in the forest. We’ve also expanded the set a little bit to work with all the different venues we’re taking the show to and the ladders can now be climbed on. Some people who have seen the show in both its lives enjoy playing spot the difference and others can’t figure out what’s changed! Did you see much of yourselves in the heroine?

As a writer there’s always got to be something in a story you’re going to work on that touches some aspect of your own life. I think that in starting our own company, especially in financially straightened times, we’ve had to embrace a bit of her determination, fire and some might say foolhardiness! So far it seems to have worked!

or the person?

How important is the audience and how should they react?

The audience is the final and most important ingredient. Without them, the show wouldn’t ever really exist – it’s made for them. It’s still a real honour to have people coming in to see your shows. But as to how they should react? That’s up to them. What’s next for The Wrong Crowd?

We’re weaving together a number of tales from Slavic folklore, which feature the same amazing and somewhat terrifying character. We can’t wait to get our teeth stuck into it. Keep in touch with us via our website www.wrongcrowdtheatre.co.uk – you can sign up to our newsletter on our Contact page. Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

SUZUKI POWERS INTO PORTSMOUTH AT THE POWERBOAT & RIB SHOW

Gunwharf Quays played host to the Suzuki-sponsored Powerboat & RIB Show on 11th–13th May, where the free-toenter event featured a wide selection of RIBS, powerboats and associated products for sale – as well as free Suzuki RIB rides for those who wanted to get out on the water! Suzuki ran the popular RIB Experience and Wetwheels – which uses a twin 300hp Suzukipowered Cheetah catamaran to allow wheelchair-bound boaters the chance to experience the thrill of powerboating – to provide free powerboat rides to those people who just wanted to go out for a bit of fun on the Solent. As ever, these rides were hugely popular and enabled over 500 people to get out on the water, including 30 disabled people. Suzuki also exhibited a range of products from its other divisions, including cars, motorcycles, ATVs plus its new clothing and merchandising range. 10 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

Gareth Lumsdaine, Sales and Marketing Manager for Suzuki’s ATV and Marine Division said, “We were pleased to be the title sponsor of the first Powerboat and RIB Show and thoroughly enjoyed exhibiting at Gunwharf Quays. Not only were we able to create awareness of our brand and products, but the setting enabled us to take so many people out on the water to try our products or to experience a RIB ride for the first time.” Look out for the show when it returns next year, but in the meantime, if you can’t wait to experience powerboating first-hand, Suzuki will be running their RIB Experience and Wetwheels at the PSP Southampton Boat Show from 14th–23rd September. GIVE ME SOME SUGAR!

Last year’s winner of The Apprentice, Tom Pellereau, on a big year in business

GIVE ME SOME SUGAR!

It’s fair to say that the winners of BBC1 reality show The Apprentice have enjoyed mixed fortunes after being ‘hired’ by Britain’s favourite grumpy taskmaster. For every Tim Campbell, the accomplished victor of the first series, Lord Sugar has chosen a Michelle Duxberry, the disastrous 2006 winner who somehow beat Ruth Badger and proved that the ex-Amstrad supremo hasn’t always been the shrewdest of judges when it comes to picking his staff. Yet in last year’s winner Tom Pellereau, Lord Sugar seems to have made a sound investment. The man from Kingston-on-Thames – affectionately known as ‘the mad professor’ – has so far made a great success of what he excitedly describes as a “life changing dream come true”.

nature of the boardroom. From Ricky “I truly am the reflection of perfection” Martin to “once seen never forgotten” Jenna Wittingham, the 2012 season has its usual share of characters and (misplaced) egos. In contrast, Pellereau’s quirky and likable charm impressed Lord Sugar as much as his sharp business mind and obvious creative flair. Not that his charisma has saved him from the wrath of Lord Sugar. Far from it, and Pellereau has a warning for the winner of this year’s series: “Lord Sugar can make life as demanding as you imagine. “Lord Sugar is certainly...” he starts with a serious tone, choosing his words carefully... “well, what’s so good is the fact that he’s been there and done it. And you can see the success that he’s had. He’s actually lived what he preaches. So you can have respect in the fact that you know he knows what he’s talking about.”

“Lord Sugar can make life as demanding as you imagine”

And investment is just the word, given that Pellereau was the first recipient of a £250,000 prize and the opportunity to become a business partner with...rather than mere employee of...Lord Sugar.

Pellereau’s first product in collaboration with the former Tottenham Hotspur chairman was called the Stylfile, a collection of nail files that the 31-year-old says are ‘revolutionary’, and that have already proved a hit with shoppers and stylists alike. “The first is the S-shaped file,” Pellereau begins in his infectiously affable way. “It’s curved to go with the natural shape of your nail and makes it really easy to have beautiful, gorgeous looking nails. Then there’s the S-buffer, which follows a similar principle, albeit with an additional buffer that you can use at the top of the nail. And the curve makes it much easier to give a really shiny finish”. “The third item is the Emergency file, which is a mini file that can be attached to a key ring. It’s for those occasions when you’re caught out, and the response to all three has been amazing.” For the business wannabes starring in the current series, Pellereau is an example of how to conduct yourself during the procession of demanding tasks, not to mention the cut-throat ‘each for their own’ Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

“But,” he admits, getting to the crux, “he doesn’t make it easy for you. I’ve been shouted at a lot. If he doesn’t think something is up to standard he will just tell you. If he thinks you’re being a bit naive he’ll tell you. He always lets you have it straight, and he can make things difficult for you. But I’m here to learn. I came onto The Apprentice because I held my hands up and said ‘I don’t know everything. I want to learn from the best’.” He may not know it all, but Pellereau has come a long way from the unknown entrepreneur struggling to make headway in a fiercely competitive marketplace. Now in the most enviable of positions, can one of the reality show’s most endearing contestants ensure his partnership with Lord Sugar has longevity? “I’ve certainly been looking into things; I’ve got ideas for the future,” he says, barely containing his excitement. “But this is a small venture and I have to be careful not to bury it in new things. That’s definitely one of my failings. I have to focus on making sure this becomes a success, listen to what consumers are saying, react to that, and try to improve for next time. But hopefully this is a long-term thing. I’m determined to make the most of this opportunity.” JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

bes May hem! puts on it s ro an d ge ts chan ting ... THE SCIENCE BIT... The Summer Solstice occurs at the moment the axial tilt of the Earth’s semi-axis in a given hemisphere is most inclined towards the star that it orbits-in our case, the Sun.

MEANING? All we really need to think about is that it’s the day in the year when we have the longest period of daylight!

WHEN IS IT? Well, if you’re aiming to see the sun rise at Stonehenge (the place to be on such a day) then its on Thursday June 21st-with sunrise at 5:14am. 14 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

WHY STONEHENGE? Stonehenge is special. Its perhaps the most sacred space in the country and amongst the most sacred and spiritual in the world. According to some archaeologists, it was built nearly 5000 years ago – so those old stones have seen and heard a few things. Pagans and Paganism, the ancient and original religion of these islands gather at Stonehenge to see the sun rise, aligned on that morning with the Heel Stone and Slaughter Stone (yes, that’s exactly what it was used for). Think of it as a giant cosmic computer-built with frighteningly accurate precision.

WHAT ARE THE PAGANS CELEBRATING? For many it marks the marriage of the God and Goddess of the Earth, their union creating the natural force that ultimately creates the fruits of harvest. It is a time to celebrate growth and life, but, as well as that, also a time of reflection, for, after this day, the hours of daylight inexorably fall away, day by day, thus there is also acknowledgement, even now, that the sun has began its slow decline towards Winter.

Pro: One of the best Twitter alternatives for the iPhone, it has too many features to mention them all, but there’s definitely something for everyone. It’s fully customisable down to what kind of notifications you want to receive (that’s if you need any) and you don’t need to pay any extra for Push Notifications.

Con: Can’t really fault this app – it does have a price tag of £1.99, which some people refuse to pay as there are free alternatives, but if you’re a true Twitter addict, then this is the one for you! Overall: Definitely recommended for people more confident with the various features of Twitter and also people that use the iPhone a lot, as it can be confusing for people who want a simple app.

TWITTER Pro: It’s one of the more simple Twitter apps, doing exactly what it says on the tin with a similar layout to the Twitter website. The feature that makes this app stand out from the rest is that you can see a list of retweets/favourites/new followers in the Interactions tab. Con: It isn’t heavy on features, and some features that are standard in many apps just aren’t in this one – such as the ability to translate a Tweet, or have Tweetmarker support. Overall: Good to use if you don’t use Twitter very often, or if you’re not confident with more complex apps. It’s also free to download, which is always a plus.

TWITTELATOR NEUE Pro: This has got to be the best looking Twitter app I’ve seen, especially how the photos are displayed and enlarged. You also have the ability to tweet from multiple Twitter accounts all at once. Also plenty of other features, but not as many as Tweetbot. Con: There are still a few bugs that need to be ironed out. You also need to pay for Push Notifications after paying £1.99 for the App. Overall: If you’re the kind of person who wants a beautiful looking Twitter app that breaks away from the norm then Neue is definitely for you!

FOR THE LADIES!

LOOK YOUR BEST TO SCORE THE PERFECT JOB Whether you’re looking for a career change,

WRITTEN BY TORI HARRIS

job, looking your best for the interview is very important. Not only are if you look great, it boosts helps you shine!

If during your interview you express that you pay great attention to detail then you need to reflect that in the way you look. Start preparing a few days before – start with a manicure. Neat, clean nails look professional and demonstrate attention to detail. If you have a number of interviews coming up or are prone to chipping nails it is worth paying a bit extra for a gel manicure – Gellux or Shellac start at around £15–£20 and last up to two weeks without chipping! Perfect if you have a week of interviews and handing out CV’s lined up! Light, plain colours on nicely shaped nails look best. In the few days before the interview use Elizabeth Arden 8hr Skin Protect on your lips, this will help to moisturise and heal }any cracks. If they are particularly dry use a lip scrub – Floozie by Frost French Cupcake Kisses lip scrub is just £4.50 in Debenhams. 18 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

MAYHEM! TOP TIPS DO… q "MXBZT MFBWF ZPVSTFMG extra time to get ready… Getting hot and flustered before an interview is not ideal!

SIMPLICITY IS KEY Overdone makeup gives the wrong impression. Stick to thin foundation or if your skin is good tinted moisturiser teamed with a natural blush and highlighters will give you a fresh dewy look. Benefit’s Watt’s Up! (£24.50) is really easy to use – lightly drag across the top of the cheekbone and onto the apple of the cheek and blend slightly. To give your face more definition, shape define your eyebrows by using a little eye shadow to fill them out and shape them. To contour your face use a little bronzing powder without shimmer or a slightly darker face powder and lightly brush along your jaw line and in the crevasse of your cheek. For eyes use natural colours – browns are fairly safe. While you want it to look like you it’s important to come across professional and not to look like your going to be going out partying Thursday through Sunday – even if you are! Use eyeliner if you can do it well – if not swap it for an extra coat of mascara to really open your eyes up. A nice natural gloss such as MAC’s Boy Bait is a great finishing touch, however, if it is an office job or highly professional atmosphere you are better of going with a lipstick – peachy or pink tones which blend in nicely with your natural lip colour are good options. WHATS IN A NAME? The British have always had a thing about their sporting events – believing they are all the original and best and, as a result, need no further introduction. Look no further, for example, than the leading golf tournament – it’s just called ‘The Open’. And it’s the same with the tennis…there are four major world championship-type events, namely the Australian, French and US Opens. But there is no British Open. It’s just ‘The Championships’ or ‘Wimbledon’.

22 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

DEUCE!

WIMBLEDON? The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in, erm, Wimbledon, is in a leafy and exclusive suburb of London. The Club introduced their annual invitational to the world’s best players to compete in their Championships in 1877 and it’s been going on ever since.

WHAT COMPETITIONS ARE THERE? Numerous! There are, for example, ones for Juniors, Seniors and Wheelchair Players. The main ones, however, (and the number of entrants for each) are as follows; Gentlemen’s Singles (128 draw); Ladies’ Singles (128 draw); Gentlemen’s Doubles (64 draw); Ladies’ Doubles (64 draw) and Mixed Doubles (48 draw). Traditionally, the two ‘top’ events – Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals (note ‘Ladies’ and ‘Gentlemen’, not ‘Women’ and ‘Men’) are played on the final weekend, the Saturday and Sunday afternoons respectively.

IS IT EASY TO GO AND WATCH? Yes and no. If you are happy to queue along with everyone else, then go along and buy a ticket that gets you entrance into the grounds for a day’s play. For the first week of the tournament its £20 per person and £14 after 5pm. The price for a Centre Court ticket for the first week of the tournament (if you are lucky enough to get one) is currently £44 for the first day, rising to £120 for the last day. If you want to go, head for Southfields on the Underground (District Line) rather than Wimbledon – it’s about a fifteen minute walk from there, but there are buses and taxis.

WHO’LL WIN THIS YEAR? If Mayhem! was a betting magazine, we ‘d suggest a little flutter on Novak Djokovic for the Mens...sorry, Gentlemen’s Singles and Victoria Azarenka for the Ladies’. The winner of each, incidentally, receives a prize of £1,100,000! Anyone for tennis? JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

KEEP THE FAITH!

Following the release of her new Album ‘Fall to Grace’ and ahead of her appearance at the Larmer Tree Festival this month, we catch up with Paloma Faith to get the gossip on her dream collaborations, what’s coming up next and who to look out for in the world of fashion! You released your single ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ last month – can you tell us what this song is about?

It’s about being in a relationship with somebody who you think might be on the rebound but you’re not sure. They’re recovering from the past relationship and what it’s like to be in that position when you’re doubting yourself and your role in their life. For your album ‘ Fall To Grace’ you’ve stated that you ’ve taken a more cinematic approach with the album, with it being the ‘soundtrack to your life’, was this a conscious decision on your part, to combine your music with your love of acting to make the album more personal?

It was a conscious decision but it wasn’t really that I wanted to combine it with my love of acting; it was more that I wanted to combine it with my love of film as a viewer. I watch a lot of films all the time so I wanted to somehow cultivate the atmosphere of films into this whole album and everything we put out. Do you have any favourite tracks? What track are you most looking forward to fans hearing?

I love all of them, but I think some stand out ones are probably ‘The Next Thing’, ‘30 Minute Love Affair’ and ‘Blood Sweat and Tears’ they’re kind of… more dancey ones, which make me excited to have a dance! I’m really looking forward to the emotional side of things ‘Just Be’ and ‘Streets Of Glory’ I’m really excited about, ‘Just Be’ as it’s a very stripped back ballad with piano and then ‘Streets of Glory’ is the opposite, it’s got bells and whistles and everything all in one. They also have string arrangements from David Arnold who I think is incredible. You’ve previously said that “A lot of people write songs because they want to record them in a studio” whereas you write songs so that you can perform them live. do you prefer performing the chilled out songs, or the more upbeat numbers?

I think a mix of both. Like light, you need light and shade; gigs are full of light and shade as well. Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

KEEP THE FAITH! You collaborated with lots of artists, from rapper Ghost Face Killah for a remixed version of ‘New York’ to Cee Lo Green at the Brit awards. Who would be your dream collaboration?

Andre 3000. Going back to your acting career, television dramas. You’ve recently been announced to appear in the BBC adaptation of Blandings – can you tell us a little more about your character and how this came about?

I’m just appearing as a character called Jordan who’s in episode five of the series; she’s basically a 1920s version of me! She’s a London cabaret performer and is a bit playful, and quite cheeky. I had an audition – I don’t think they even knew I was an actress! I went to the audition and they said that they liked my interpretation of the character and I said ‘I’m just being myself!’ You’ve been hailed in the press as somewhat of a fashion icon - who would you say were your biggest are there any new designers we should look out for?

Biggest inspiration is probably Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Coco Chanel – I love the way she dressed – Bjork and Grace Jones. Designers I love are Dolce and Gabbana, I keep wearing them, Alexander McQueen I think is incredible, I love all the high-end stuff like Jean Paul Gaultier. New designers I think Piers Atkinson and Victoria Grant are amazing. You mentioned that Bjork is one of your fashion inspirations – you recently worked with Nellee Hooper (Bjork, No Doubt, Madonna) who produced your album; what was it like working with him? Did you learn anything from him?

I learn new things everyday! I learn new things all the time. If you go through life not learning it’s a bit weird. I learnt loads; it was amazing working with him. We were a match made in heaven, as he’s really into visual things and so am I. So I suppose he’s the first producer I worked with who understood my language, as 28 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

I sort of speak in pictures! My old A&R from my record company left and this guy called Colin Barlow took over the record label. I told him what I was after and how I didn’t really know who to approach and he suggested Nellee. He said ‘I’ve got a really strong feeling about this, and you’ve got to trust me’ and I did, and I met him, and I thought he was brilliant! You were a mentor for Danny’s team on BBC’s ‘The Voice’ to help prep the vocalists for the ‘Battle’ round of the competition. What was the main piece of advice you gave to them, and how was the experience for you? Did you learn anything by going through the process with them?

I think the main piece of advice I was giving them was about performance and how I think it’s not enough to just stand on stage and sing the song, you have to do extra, whether it be physically moving around and giving depth to the song physically or giving a more physically emotional performance. I just feel like to me it’s important that we have something to look at, so I focused on that. I learnt how much talent there is out there, and how it’s a really strange industry as, at the end of the day, not that much talent breaks through. It’s unbelievable sometimes when you just take a minute to think ‘actually, there’s loads of people who could be wearing the exact same shoes that I’m wearing’. It makes me feel grateful for what I’ve got and what I’ve achieved – obviously I’ve worked bloody hard for it but I think there’s a certain combination of hard work, perseverance… and a little sprinkling of luck. What are your plans for the rest of the year; do you have any live plans or plans to tour?

I’m doing some warm up shows this summer, I’m yet to find out dates – I’ll be promoting this record then I’m hoping I’ll tour towards the end of the year but I won’t if people don’t buy the album! So I’m waiting to find out if people will buy it so I can go out on tour and show off!! I’m very nervous about the release, I keep ringing my manager up… I’m a bag of nerves! To advertise in Mayhem! HEADS UP, BOOK WORMS!

We catch up with Waterstones – Portsmouth, to find out what’s leaping off the shelves this month. Why not get in touch and tell us what you’re reading at the moment… Facebook.com/themayhemmagazine.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY E L JAMES One of the most talked about books of recent times, an internet sensation now available in paperback for the first time! This is the first in a somewhat steamy and passionate trilogy about a young woman who finds herself drawn to the powerful business man Christian Grey. Incredibly addictive and definitely not one for the kids.

DANCE WITH DRAGONS GEORGE R R MARTIN For all those who follow Sky Atlantic’s amazing show ‘A Game of Thrones’, the latest two volumes in this epic fantasy series are now available in paperback. If you haven’t read any of the novels yet (there are five so far) then now is the perfect time to start – this is a world which will completely swallow you up whole! 30 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN MITCH ALBOM THE HUNGER GAMES TRILOGY SUZANNE COLLINS

The recent film ‘The Hunger Games’ has really stirred up interest in Suzanne Collins’ fabulous trilogy. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, 16 year old Katniss is forced to compete in the annual Hunger Games, a live televised fight to the death – the ultimate reality show?

THE KASHMIR SHAWL ROSIE THOMAS An epic tale of doomed love and family secrets, set against the backdrop of 1940s Kashmir. This is an incredibly well-researched novel, with breathtaking descriptions of the rich valleys of Kashmir, and the intrigue about the origins of the mysterious shawl – found wrapped carefully around a lock of child’s hair 70 years later – will leave you unable to put this book down!

Not a new book but a bestseller for us here at Waterstones Portsmouth, and my personal favourite book ever. Difficult to summarise without giving away most of the story, you will simply have to take my word for it that this book will change your life. You have to read this book.

two new book s you mig ht hav e mis sed (but nee d to read!): THE ART OF FIELDING BY CHAD HARBACH A novel about baseball that turns out to be about everything BUT baseball – one of the most surprising reads of the year, and one that you will love. THE SONG OF ACHILLES BY MADELEINE MILLER Shortlisted for the Orange Prize 2012, this is a sexy update of the classic tale The Ilead – a passionate love story set in Ancient Greece.

Like a certain protagonist in the Harry Potter novels, we do not speak its name. It’s a word that’s whispered else disguised into a more gentle form – indeed, if you hear that someone is suffering from a ‘long illness’ or is ‘seriously ill’, then there is a strong likelihood that they have been, or are, battling Cancer and all its attendant woes, including the treatments which,

while becoming more and more effective, can be brutal and the cause of many an uncomfortable and long lasting side effects. But what, exactly, is Cancer? Very broadly speaking it refers to a group of various diseases all of which involve unregulated cell growth – hence the dreaded appearance of a ‘lump’ or, as the specialists might say, a malignant neoplasm. But let’s just call it a lump.

But where might we find one – and how? And does the presence of an unknown lump, shape, bump or protuberance on our body mean that we have Cancer? Well – in most cases, no it doesn’t. But it pays to be aware of the possibilities and to check ourselves as much as we can – just incase it does. So let’s explore ourselves a little and get to know those parts of our body that we really ought to get to know as well as the back of our hands and, ladies and gents, this means starting with your most personal areas. No room for blushes here either – as the phrase goes, don’t die of embarrassment... 36 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

THE DON INVESTIGATES THE A–Z OF…

TESTICULAR CANCER

One of the first signs of testicular Cancer is often a lump or swelling in the testes – so chaps, in essence, you need to get up close and comfortable with your balls. Learn to self examine. It’s often easiest to do this in the bath or shower when the old chaps are relaxed and dangling at their best. Each testicle should be smooth with no lumps or swellings. Also, bearing in mind it is unusual to develop Cancer in both testicles at the same time, you can, if you are wondering if one is feeling normal or not, compare it to the other. You might also want to ask your partner to do this for you or with you. If something does feel a little unusual or, if you have had some other symptoms – a sharp pain or dull ache in the lower abdomen/scrotum, a feeling of ‘heaviness’ in the scrotum or any sort of discomfort in that area, then always, always have it checked out by your Doctor. He or she would far rather you came in and were either sent on your way with a clean bill of health and an explanation than put it off until, well, until you can’t put it off anymore.

For more reading try these websites: http://cancerhelp.cancerresearchuk.org www.cancerinformation.org.uk www.macmillan.org.uk (Information if you or a friend/loved one has been diagnosed with Cancer)

The Don will be looking at some of the other forms of Cancer etc in next month’s issue – maybe inviting people to contribute with questions or queries about the subject that the Mayhem! health professional can answer?

BREAST CANCER

The same applies here for the ladies. Learn to self examine the breasts and, again, if anything feels a little unfamiliar, a lump or swelling in a place where you can’t recall there being one before – then, again, do pop along to see your Doctor and let them check things out with you. A lump in a breast does not, by any means, signify you have Cancer – it could, for example, be a harmless, non-benign cyst. Your GP or local hospital can soon tell you if it is – and, if that is the case = peace of mind. If it isn’t = early self diagnosis and a highly likely chance of full recovery.

These are, of course, hugely personal and intimate parts of your respective bodies and those which people hold to be as sacred and ‘special’ as any – and after all, it’s likely that, after you, then the only other person who sees them, knows them and gets to know them almost as intimately will be your lover. So, again, think about making them part of your selfexamination process. Take time out to think about your health, their health, and share your concerns.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

It needn’t take long and it certainly needn’t be painful or embarrassing. But regular adherence to regular self examination might just help prolong or even save your life one day. So don’t be shy, least of all with yourself and your worries – and remember, if you have any at all, no matter how stupid, trivial or groundless they might seem – go and see a health professional and discuss it with them. From 80’s legend MC Hammer’s big and blingy breakdancing britches to today’s ubiquitous skinny jeans, the weird and wonderful world of what to wear over your underwear is celebrated on Wrong Trousers Day. On the 29th of June Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation encourage everyone to don their daftest drawers and donate £1 to help sick kids in children’s hospitals and hospices across the UK. The day is inspired by the cracking short film, The Wrong Trousers, which features both the least convincing chicken disguise, and the best indoor chase scene ever committed to film. If you can’t think what to wear this Wrong Trousers Day, here’s three loopy legwear ideas from music history, and, if you’d prefer not to take part, we’ve also helpfully provided three songs not to wear pants to. If you want to combine two brights, use ‘complementary’ colours. It’s not all black and white! This means combining opposites on the colour wheel of red/ green, blue/orange and yellow/purple.

Pastels and nudes are still around so if you feel scared by the overwhelm of bright ness, consider paring with nude shoes and a sheer, paler blouse or t-shirt.

Your choice of footwear can change the whole look. High heeled courts and open toe wedges lengthen legs and give the air of sophistication and look great with both full length and cropped styles. Team with sports luxe – another trend – and trainers or high top wedges for running around. Girly colours, such as bright pink, worn with brogues and a blazer for an enigmatic masculine twist.

Dumpster DESIGN

Making her way up in the world of high fashion and one of the featured artists at last months prestigious Brighton Fashion Week, Daisy Harris-Burland, Aka, Dumpster Design, is setting her sights on big things! We last heard from Daisy in November 2011 where she hosted her own fantastic fashion event here in Portsmouth to show off her Couture and Apparel range. The night was a massive success and it was clear at that point Daisy was a force to be reckoned with. Daisy has always been fascinated by how you can take things that might otherwise be thrown away and use them to create a thing of beauty. Her Dumpster Couture line does just that – whether made from table cloths, old train tickets or magazine covers, each piece is a work of art in itself. “The Couture collection, inspired to tackle today’s throw-away mentality, is an eco-friendly approach to fashion with the result being unconventional and eye-catching one-offs that are quirky and lots of fun!”

Among her current collection Mayhem! features three bespoke dresses and a top-hat with tails for the gents, aptly contructed from our Bear Grylls Issue. All part of a wider collection which will comprise of 10 handcrafted pieces completed to coincide with, and celebrate, not only our own our first birthday, but Dumpster Design’s first birthday too. So with that in mind we set about a collaboration which has lead to amazing results. The pieces will then be up for auction! o get bidding among yourselves and join us later in the year to see who will go home with each of these superb one-off collectables from Mayhem! magazine and Dumpster Design.

TIP TOP TATS

So one day you wake up and finally decide to get a tattoo – correction – your first tattoo. That’s great, but you need to know a few things before actually doing it. Since Portsmouth has one of UK’s most tattooed populations, it seems appropriate that Mayhem! should give some advice to any tattoo newbie out there. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GET? Whether you appreciate the fine body art, you’re a rebel or you just think it’s the right thing to do – but what should you get? Whether it’ll be a butterfly, dragon or lettering, think it over carefully because a tattoo usually aims to either make a personal statement, help you remember something dear to you or just decorate your natural canvas. Also make sure you have figured out where you want to place it and take into consideration whether or not your choice will affect your job prospects. Don’t forget that the big companies show a rather conservative outlook on tattoos.

PICK YOUR TATTOO ARTIST Ask your friends or just people you know whose tattoo you like. Check out a few studios and talk to the artists – you’re looking for someone who’ll take time to sit down with you and discuss ideas, whether they’re applicable for the body part you’d like to get inked and whether your design can be modified to look better. Once you’ve found the right artist, make sure the studio is clean and the equipment is sterile and new. Everything needs to be opened in front of you – from the needles to the gloves.

First tattoos are exciting because you don’t know what to expect. Pain is dependent on your individual threshold, expertise of the tattoo artist and of course the place where you’re getting the work. It will probably sting a bit, but it’s manageable. Most importantly – be well rested and relaxed so you don’t feel any discomfort and don’t take any painkillers, alcohol or drugs before your appointment as they can make you bleed more.

PRETTY FLY FOR A RABBI The idea for speed dating was originated by a Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of the Orthodox Jewish Aish HaTorah school, which to this day owns the trademark to the name (registered as SpeedDating). Soon similar franchises were spreading like wildfire across the United States, with the first official event taking place at Peet’s Cafe, Beverly Hills, in 1998 – before long the phenomenon spread around the world, with a niche market quickly opening as organisers looked to match people by interest, ethnicity, religion, and almost anything you care to think of.

START YOUR ENGINES It’s a relatively simple concept – time with other singletons, with a time limit, usually signalled by a bell ringing, glass clinking, or similar. The limit is anywhere between three and eight minutes, participants are encouraged to mix with as many different people as possible, creating a vibrant mix without the pressures of having to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a potential match (the matching process beginning after the main event), creating a pub or nightclub atmosphere without the awful music, tight trousers and overzealous bouncers.

LOOKING FOR LOVE

SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE Interestingly, the format has been studied by academics from various universities looking to better understand certain aspects of the business of how the dating actually works – for example, factors which lead to increased desirability (age and height, according to a 2006 University of Essex study) and first impressions, deemed vitally important in research by the University of Pennsylvania, which showed that both men and women made their minds up within just three seconds of meeting a potential partner.

ANYTHING

GOES Vintage Clothing

BUSINESS TIME ‘Speed Networking’ is another spin-off, allowing business conferences to borrow the best aspects of speed dating in an effort to create relationships between companies (and possibly their employees, though this would almost certainly be a by-product), encouraging quick sales pitches and information exchange in one of three ways. ‘Round robin’ random pairings, ‘stationbased’ pre-assigned meetings and simple wider groups are the most popular methods. And remember, you can fly solo or bring friends depending on preference, the most important thing is good old fashioned fun – just be yourself and make things as comfortable as possible, making sure you’re well prepared for anything and everything that comes your way.

THE LOOK OF LOVE Another more recent addition to the dating stable is stare-dating. Also known as ‘eye-gazing’, the premise is startlingly simple – contact beginning from the ‘windows to the soul’, before progressing into the usual chat. An even number of people get together, given brief instruction in the art of eye contact, and mingle for two minutes at a time, just gazing and feeling the vibes, for 45 minutes. What follows is a more standard meet and greet, all from the mind of Michael Ellsberg, author of The Power Of Eye Contact – Your Secret For Success In Business, Love, And Life.

CATCH UP WITH…

THE INTERVIEW BY TORY NAIRN

TEMPER TRAP

You’re returning to the music world

Aussie band ‘The Temper Trap’ hit the UK charts with their catchy single, ‘Sweet Disposition’. Mayhem! caught up with the band to discuss their new album self-titled ‘The Temper Trap’ and to see how it’s all going…. 54 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

You guys formed in Melbourne, Australia, how hard was it to break into the British music scene?

addition of Joseph Greer on the piano…why did you decide to add a new member?

We were quite lucky that Korda Marshall who runs Infectious, which is our record label in the UK, came out to see us play in Melbourne and after signing with him it allowed us to move over to the UK where we had a lot of support from the label and the team of people working with us over there.

Well considering I am the fifth member I’ll try to give you an accurate reason why they asked me to join. Basically I’d been touring with the band for the last four years but just as a touring member and we all got along so well it just felt like a natural progression to come on as an official member at the beginning of the writing for the second album.

You’ve started your worldwide tour throughout Europe, Canada, United States and Australia. Tell us about some funny moments so far?

Well everyone has started to become very fitness obsessed on tour so if you come down during sound check you’ll see a make shift badminton set made up from mic stands and all of us playing very competitively!

We saw you live in Portsmouth and we were very impressed with the powerful vocals and array of comes the concept, lyrics or sound?

Usually the music comes first. We all sit down together and write the music and then Dougy takes it away and works on the lyrics and melody.

CATCH UP WITH…

check out

www.t he tempert rap.com for more in fo! You said in a recent interview that you went into the studio with 40 songs and worked them down to 12…how did you decide which songs make the cut?

It was a long process and a lot of discussions. All of us had songs that we would have loved to make the album but I think we managed to settle with something we are all happy with. ‘Conditions’ was such a success, what kind of expectations are there for your new album?

I think we would all love to continue the same success as before. We are a really hard working band and put a lot of expectation on our selves and it’s no different this time. Hopefully people will like the new album as much as the last.

Tr ap’ ‘T he T emper lbum s elf t it le d a is out now !

How did the Portsmouth crowd receive the tracks from your new album? How was the gig in general?

Portsmouth was the second show on the tour so we were still finding our legs a little bit and getting used to playing a new set but the crowd was great which always makes a difference for us. Have you played at any historic venues that have blown you away, when thinking about how far you’ve come and what other great bands have performed on the same stage?

We are about to play at the Sydney Opera House in a few weeks which will have to be one of the most amazing places we would have ever played. It’s such a landmark venue.

‘London’s Burning’ was written about the aftermath of last summer’s London riots. What were your thoughts on the uprisings?

Your new album is self-titled ‘The Temper Trap’. What made you decide to just go with your band name as a title?

To be completely honest, we couldn’t decide between the five of us on a name that we all liked so we ended up going with a self titled. Boring story but it’s true.

I think we were all really ready to get into it. We had toured for two and half years with the first album, then we had a month break but most of us got bored pretty quickly and wanted to start writing.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

We all live in Hackney, East London which is one of the areas it was happening so we all felt quite affected by it. I think Dougy wrote the lyrics as an observation of the situation and not really picking any sides. Are there any bad habits on the tour bus?

When people talk on their phones while in their bunk, when everyone is trying to sleep. We were researching superstitions for a recent content piece. Have you got any superstitions?

I know that Toby won’t walk under ladders but I think that’s it. What’s on your Ipod right now?

At the moment I’m listening to Beach House, Django Django and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

OLD-SCHOOL JAM

The history of jam consumption in this country is believed to begin in Tudor times, as a delicacy at the courts of kings and queens – though the art of actually making the preserve as we know it today most likely rests with the Crusaders who introduced it to a wider European audience following their trials elsewhere, 19th Century West Indies- based Spaniards having perfected the craft of fruit preservation. Every stately meal at Louis XIV’s Palace Of Versailles is said to have been rounded

off with fruit preserves made from the product of the royal gardens, all of which forms what we see and enjoy today.

And from the old faithful Jammie Dodger to the jam roly-poly, there’s nothing it can’t do – so show it some love and why not try making your own?

5) Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until the mixture thickens to the desired consistency.

3) Wash the rose hips and put them in a saucepan of water to simmer over low heat until soft, then puree them in a food mill or blender.

6) Ladle into a hot sterilised jar and seal according to manufacturer’s directions. 7) Process jars in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes.

JAM SESSION

Watch out for a high fruit content, whether buying or making your own, ideally 55 grams in every 100 is the happy medium. There is an easy way to learn the craft – Michelle McKenna, founder of Clippy’s Preserves, is touring the country with her preserve-making workshops.

The authority on this and most cooking matters, as well as boozy rants at Norwich City fans, is probably Delia Smith. Her ten-step guide to perfect jam-making is most likely the baking equivalent of Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book (with apologies to Mary Berry and other kitchen goddesses), and it can be found at www.deliaonline.com

HISTORY The earliest cookbook dates back to 1st Century Rome (called Of Culinary Matters), which contained recipes for making jam. Originally created in the Middle East using the sweetness from sugar cane and honey mixed in with the native fruits. Crusaders returning to Britain brought the jams and recipes backs with them. Marmalade came into existence in the 16th Century when Mary Queen of Scots’ physician mixed orange and sugar to help

with her seasickness. Thus, marmalade became a favourite of royalty. Louis XIV of France had a variety of jams at his feast made from fruits from the palace gardens, which include pineapples and other exotic fruits. Once it became known that Vitamin C prevented scurvy, jam became part of the staple used on ships. Fresh fruit did not last long, but the jam lasted for the length of the trip providing the sailors with the vitamins they needed to maintain health.

Robert Pattinson can barely venture out during daylight hours, Zac Efron needs an armed guard whenever he leaves the house, and One Direction may as well bed down in an underground bunker – their days of wandering the streets unnoticed are long over. But another rather unlikely candidate can also empathise with the lack of personal space when encountering the public, and Warwick Davis has had to deal with it for over three decades. Ever since George Lucas cast him as Wicket, chief Ewok in Return of the Jedi, privacy has been hard to come by. “For years, they’ve camped in my front garden, and put graffiti on my walls displaying messages of devotion,” he laughs. “And every time I move house, they always eventually catch up with me. But that’s Star Wars for you. No-one knew at the time how big it was going to be, so who could have predicted the outcome would be like this… for me of all people?” “I get accosted on the street all the time, but I’m glad of it. It proves I’ve done such a wide range of things in my career. People want to talk to me about any number of movies or shows, and it’s lovely. It means you’re doing something right and, as an actor, you want people watching what you do; you want to make an impact. So no, it never bothers me. It means I’ll hopefully still be in demand for a while yet.” After his big break in Jedi, Davis, measuring only 3ft 6in, went onto to star in Ron Howard’s fantasy epic Willow, with Val Kilmer and Jean Marsh, in a role specifically penned for him. He followed that up with leading roles in Leprechaun, The Chronicles of Narnia, and as Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter series. Presently, the 42-year-old dad of two has struck an unlikely alliance with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, appearing in last year’s Life’s Too Short, a series based around Davis’s experiences as a small person in the

movie industry. The show was relatively well received but critics tore into what they claimed to be “a mean-spirited dig at those afflicted by dwarfism”. Davis however, has a rebuttal for the naysayers. “I was really happy with the reception,” he says. “Critics are one thing, viewers are another. Saying it was insulting to small people was so ridiculous. The show’s about me and the joke’s not on me. And that’s the reaction you get as a short person in real life anyway. Anything Ricky’s involved in will lead people to judge - it’s a sport now. They did it with our show, they did it with Derek. We weren’t trying to push any buttons, it’s about a guy who’s not entirely comfortable in his own skin and it’s realistic. Most people out there aren’t very PC about short people. Believe me, I know.”

Warwick is happy to report that a special episode has already been commissioned by the BBC. But why not a whole new series? “Everyone’s busy with our own work and it’s really all we can manage between us, so we decided a ‘special’ was the way to go. A series takes six to eight months to put together. We don’t have that sort of time.” Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter starred in the debut series,

which aired just before Christmas. Who can we expect for the special? “There are some names involved, but Ricky will kill me if I breathe a word. Personally, I’d love Robert Downey Jnr to take part and I know we’ve reached out to him, but whether he’ll pick it up is another story. I shouldn’t have even said that!”

Before Davis – a brand ambassador for the Make a Wish Foundation gears up for the next instalment of Life’s Too Short, he’s preparing for his next Gervais adventure, this time with Karl Pilkington in the new season of Sky smash hit An Idiot Abroad. The details of Warwick’s involvement are naturally hush hush, but we can expect him to be the voice of reason against Pilkington’s xenophobic tendencies? “I can’t wait to get started on the series, but I want to maintain, I’m definitely not the idiot – that’s Karl’s department,” he laughs. “I can’t say where we’re going, but trust me, it’s an epic journey. Travel and exploration is one thing – doing it with Mr. Karl Pilkington is quite another.” “We see things from a very different perspective, so yeah, it’s more me reacting to his reactions. I‘m excited to see things that I might never have had the chance to see. And Karl is hilarious, it’s going to be brilliant.” JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

KNOCKED OUT BY…

Tenacious D hit the road this June in support of their new album Rize of the Fenix. Kicking things off in London with 3 back-to-back years, Tenacious D describes the making of the album as “journey similar to that of Gandolph in The Lord of the Rings.” We jump into the ring for a few rounds with the boys themselves!… You haven’t released any songs since 2006, what brought the group out of its hiatus?

K. Well, I guess…love of the game? Yeah I’m gonna go with love of the game J. Yeah, I’m gonna go with love of the game. Though it should be a multiple choice, you should give us all of the possible reasons as to why we came out of hiatus and then we choose one! J. OK, let’s go with love of the game. What has ‘ Tenacious D’ been up to in this time?

J. What have we been up to since the last time? Well we’ve been working on our meditation, a lot of meditation. There’s been a lot of time spent in the Himalayas. There’s been a lot of exercise and diet. There’s been a lot of nose to the grindstone. We put out a DVD, about three years ago. K. That’s true. The Complete Master Works 2. J. This time even more completer! We’ve been working very hard to complete a masterpiece, you know. But what else have you been up to? K. I’ve made babies since last time. J. I’ve been making babies too, but I just can’t find them. K. Did you lose them? J. I don’t know where they are. Maybe we’ll find them somewhere on the road! So can you tell use a little bit about the inspiration behind the songs on this album, and a bit about your song writing process?

J. Well my inspiration was really just my children. It’s kind of like when Creed found out about his baby and he wrote all those songs about it – like ‘With Arms Wide Open’. This is kinda my Arms Wide Open album.

Would you agree? K. I don’t know, that’s the first I’ve heard! J. I guess the inspiration was the haters, the non-believers, they inspired us to fight much harder. I mean, it’s definitely our comeback album. We’ve been gone for years. What was the inspiration K, besides fighting off the haters and the critics? K. Well every song has its own story really. I mean, ‘Low Hangin’ Fruit’ was inspired by sexy, you know, sex. ‘Senorita’ was inspired by sex. Okay so I guess there’s a lot of sex in there. J. The cover of the album is really a big raging boner. I guess the inspiration was orgasms. We should put orgasms on the special thanks list, I don’t know why we didn’t really. How are you hoping the critics will receive the new album?

K. I hope they rave about it. I’m gonna read every single review. J. I hope that they speak the truth – my only fear is that they’ll speak what they think they’re supposed to think. They’re gonna say what they’re supposed to say oh these guys are just clowns right? We don’t take these guys seriously, right? It’s lazy. I’m open up to critics who will really listen to it and say what they really think, as I honestly think it’s the greatest album in the last seven years. And you say ‘why seven Jack, why not just one year?’ Well seven’s just the number that came into my brain. Have you received any feedback, have you read any reviews yet?

J. The songs are better than orgasms, it’s been proven scientifically. They’ve wired people brains and when they listen to the album their pleasure

cylinders fire on all cylinders. K, can I get your back up on this? K. I’ve read every review so far and they’ve varied about 90% positive. There was a bad one. J. Who dared?! K. I can’t remember who it was! It said the big comeback falls short. J. Well my mum likes it a lot. K. That guys either a liar or has the worst taste. What’s it like making music together again and being back together as a group? Is it the same dynamic or has it changed?

J. You know, it’s better than ever, really. The older I get the more I appreciate the camaraderie and the creative buzz that we get – it’s been a pleasure. I love to rock. How do you spell that? K. ROQUE? J. I do love to roque. Roque and roll! So a fair chunk of your tour is going to be spent in Europe in June. What do you like about performing are you hoping for these shows?

J. Well we’ve never played in Germany before so that will be interesting. We’re looking forward to seeing if the hunger for The ‘D’ is as ravenous as we’ve heard. But the UK has always been some of the best shows we’ve ever had. They just have a deeper appreciated for rock than the rest of the world. And it makes sense, I would say most of the best rock has come from the UK, and it makes sense that they would appreciate it more. Wouldn’t you agree K? K. I do, I think the people in the UK are just a little smarter, a little more sophisticated. Thank you UK. JUNE 2012 | MAYHEM!

Talking of British rock, what kind of British rock do you like?

J. I don’t know if you’ve heard of these kids, the Arctic Monkeys? I like some Arctic Monkeys and have you heard of a band called Biffy Clyro? We had to open for them. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, there’s just some really great bands. So what are your favourite things to do in Manchester?

J. I like to go out for some curry and I like to just wander the streets, on a little bicycle built for two. I like to do a lot of tandem biking through parks, and just meet some people. K. Get up close and personal. J. I like to go to a book store and curl up in the corner, read some Sherlock Holmes and talk to some different British people, and the Mancunians. I like to have a spot of tea and a crumpet. Or just stay in the hotel room. I remember that Manchester rocked extra hard though. It’s the Philadelphia of England. That’s a compliment; they’re a very rocking audience. And you played Glasgow in 2006, what are your memories of the show there?

J. Well that was one of the best shows ever, remember that K? K. Yeah J. I think that was the biggest show 70 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

we played in the UK, and it was off the scale. I remember some ‘ole ole ole’ before the show started, and I remember our opening act we were almost killed by being pelted with pennies. Then we went on and the sound of the audience was similar to thunder, Kyle almost had a cardiac arrest because it vibrated his chestal cavity so intensely. K. I tell you, that would have been a pretty cool way to go. J. Kind of. ‘He died because his heart was such a pussy’. He just couldn’t survive the roar of the crowd, and what a roar! And they just kept it coming, we rocked them and they rocked us. And we were rocking back and forth all night long we got a tremendous climax. I imagine the people of Glasgow are waited with baited breath for our return, because no one’s loved them like that since. I think they will be. You’re playing the same venue as last time too.

J. Well I hope they’ve reinforced it, because it shall be shaken. You’re doing three dates in London – can you tell me a bit about what your favourite things are about London, and what you’re looking forward to doing?

K. It’s awesome, I love the London fog. J. In all honesty, the parks are the most beautiful feature of London as a town. You don’t get a lot of towns in the world any more with so much beautiful green parks. I would go down and swing the Frisbee a lot. I’ll be meditating, playing Frisbee and having a little picnic. I’ll be there everyday. And you’re also going to be playing Download festival in June. What can we expect from your set?

J. Well I’ve heard that if they don’t like you they throw urine at you. Hopefully we’ll be well liked. But you should expect an umbrella – I’ll bring an umbrella just in case. As much as I appreciate the golden showers, I don’t think it would be safe –

there’s possible electrocution. K. I think we’ll be playing fewer songs than we usually do. J. That’d right, the festival crowd – you’ve got to keep it tight. K. Look forward to a very economical set. J. You can expect a spirited… no, muscular set. There should be a sexier word than muscular, but it’s gonna be a good set. K. Enthusiastic? J. No… K. Stimulating? J. But you’ll be hearing new songs. We’re gonna kick the teeth right out of the gig with some new songs. K. We’ll massage their libidos in the second half with some old favourites. J. But it’s probably gonna be about 45 minutes of love. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

K. Whatever you do, UK, do not download this record. Go to the store and buy it. J. Are you really lecturing them on piracy? No one wants to hear you lecturing them about piracy. That is the death knell of record sales! K. I’m gonna buy up all the vinyl, there won’t be any left. That’s a good investment. J. Yeah if you buy it all imagine how valuable it’s going to be? It just like buying stocks. It’s like the most precious stock you can buy. Okay I take it back, that’s good sound economic advice – not a lecture at all. You’re looking out for the fans. K. Make sure you put it in a safety deposit box. Don’t take it out of the wrapper. J. Unless you have us sign it. But then they’ll never see that gorgeous poster inside of you and me naked, coming out of the flames. J. But thanks UK, we’ll see you soon. And one more message for Europe: just stay alive. Because it would be a shame if you died before the D came into town. You don’t want to miss this.

THE BAND OF INTERVIEWED BY TORY NAIRN

BBC Radio 1 have called you a blues/rock band, how would you describe your sound?

You’re playing the Isle of Wight Festival this June, who are you looking forward to seeing?

We are rock and roll band. But we love blues and and music that’s got some heart and soul to it.

I hope we just get some time to see the festival...and catch up with some friends.

The album is titled ‘ Sweet Sour’ which is also the name of one the album tracks. What’s the story behind the name?

How did you all meet?

One of your tracks was featured on the Twilight Films, how did that help the success of the band?

It’s a song about karma. Or our idea of it anyway. Be nice or get your ass kicked. Something like that.

Matt and I met when we were kids and Emma joined when we’re at art school. You’ve been compared to bands like The Kills and the White Stripes, are you comparative to them?

We like the music of both those bands, but we don’t set out to sound like anyone. 78 MAYHEM! | JUNE 2012

It was a song that wasn’t on a album. But it hopefully got our name out there a bit more. How does this album differ from

Radio 1’s Scott Mills has made you his record of the week! Has it been hard to break into the UK music scene?

It’s a more contrasting album. Heavier in parts. And more beautiful moments.

As hard as anywhere else. But if you believe in what you do people will discover it.

A CHAT WITH LOCAL GUYS…

Emma, you actually produce the artwork for the album yourself, do you doodle while touring, or do you set aside a few weeks to get creative?

Emma sketches all the time. I guess it would be impractical to set up the easel on the bus. Matthew and Russell, do you have any hidden talents or party tricks?

We’re both grand master landscape painters. Listening to your album, Russell and Emma harmonise a lot together on the tracks, how do you get your voices to work so well together? Is it simply a case of lots of practise?

Yes we’ve been singing together for a while now, it’s a case of not standing on each others shadows.

SKULLS You say on your website that you didn’ t have much success with song writing in Norfolk . What key ingredients make a good writing place?

The band was originally called ‘Fleeing New York’, you then hosted ‘Club Skull’… how did the name Band of Skulls come about.

We got a lot more done there than we realised at first. Sometimes you need to step back from the canvas to see where you’ve flung the paint.

It was a new chapter for us as a band, so the new name was our way of giving ourselves the freedom to make any music we wanted.

At the Beachside Festival in San Diego, a fan went so wild he was tazored by the police! Can you share any other crazy fan stories with us?

Your name implies quite a heavy metal sound, yet your music is very soulful. Do you ever get mistaken for a metal band or has the name caused any confusion over genre?

That’s one of the more extreme moments. A guy named joe proposed to his girlfriend during our show in Washington DC. ( She said yes btw ).

There has been the odd confused goth. But I think the confusion has dissipated now.

Check out our website for even more... www.mayhemmagazine.co.uk

We understand the band’ s original demos were recorded in a shed! How does the quality compare to the bigger, high tech studios you’ve recorded this album with?

We try to keep it as low tech as possible, but the rooms do get bigger. And we get a little more help. Sometimes you can spend hours recreating the sound you got in a shed. You supported The Black Keys recently, how did the opportunity come about and what was one of your most memorable moments?

We were kindly invited. Three nights ally pally was a whole lot of fun. As you’re a local band from Southampton have you got any tips for aspiring musicians?

Stick to your guns and be true to yourself. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? What are your plans for the future?
