world Peace day World peace? Yes please. It’s up there as one of the things that some people would opt for if they were given three wishes. Sadly it’s an ideal that many believe will never be achieved – but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. Mayhem! looks at one such initiative.

What’s it about? It’s a globally observed day of peace held every year on 21st September. Established by the United Nations as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.

What’s the aim? It declares that the International Day of Peace: “shall henceforth be observed as a day of global cease fire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities”.

has there ever been World Peace? It’s probably fair to say that there’s probably been no significant period in the history of planet earth when there hasn’t been some sort of armed conflict going on somewhere, whether all consuming world conflagrations, such as World War II or more locally observed hostilities such as that between Great Britain and Zanzibar in 1896. 10 MayHEM! | summer 2015

britain declared War on ZanZibar!? Yep. Zanzibar is now part of Tanzania. Said ‘war’ lasted forty minutes and is recorded as the shortest war in world history! Typically it came about because Britain disapproved of who was ‘in charge’ and went to war. In doing so took the opportunity to install their own man.

War. What is it Good For? absolutely nothinG! Damned straight. We recently saw the centenary of the beginning of World War I. It’s commonly believed that it was a straight scrap between Britain and Germany – but there were actually 36 different nations involved in the fighting, including Brazil and Cuba!

Definitely – and people thought it might, it was originally called ‘The War To End All Wars’. Over 16 million people died as a result of that conflict with a further 20 million injured. Yet a little over two decades later it all kicked off again – only this time 75 different nations were involved!

the next one isn’t Worth thinkinG about is it? No! Another conflict on a global scale really could be the ‘war to end all wars’ – but not in the way we might want it. Hence the importance of World Peace Day. Remember, millions and millions of people are unwittingly dragged into wars because of the actions of an aggressive few. We, the countless millions, need to be as vocal and demanding as possible in our calls for peace. Only then might it have the tiniest chance of being a reality.

The World Economic Forum no less. It polled the views of visitors to 140 different countries with Iceland coming out on top as the place that gave foreigners the warmest and most genuine welcome of the lot. New Zealand came second and Morocco third.

Absolutely! In much of mainland Europe and the UK; ‘foreigners’ – whether visitors or immigrants – are treated with suspicion, fear and even hostility. Not in Iceland. Most of the resident population can trace their lineage back to the fi rst settlers so they welcome the sight of a little diversity – and not only that, they’re genuinely flattered that people should choose to visit their country.

so What makes it so Friendly? The country has always had a tradition of welcoming strangers. Way back in its history, residents of the island were required to treat guests, no matter who they were, with the very best in hospitality. hoW many PeoPle visit? Approximately 300,000 people visited back in 2000 and by last year, that fi gure had doubled – that’s nearly twice the population of the entire country!

Water caPital Over 2,500 participants are joining the World Water Week this year as well as 200 organisations from 130 countries all over the world. Sweden’s capital proves to be a worthy host of this special annual event, seeing as 30% of the city is water. In addition, Stockholm is spread out over 14 islands and has a watergate which separates the Baltic Sea’s salt water from the Mälaren’s freshwater.

World Wide Water World Water Week is no drop in the ocean either. The 2011 celebration concluded with the so called Stockholm Statement, an agreement participants signed that was discussed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. This agreement involved targets that are to be fulfi lled by 2020, including the increase of eﬃcient water use in agriculture and energy production as well as a 20% decrease in water pollution. Thus, World Water Week is creating a stir in the international environmental and political arenas.

Gabrielle Aplin has seen the world, and she’s heard the world. Eighteen months’ international touring, 63.5 million Spotify streams, 80 million YouTube views, 1.5 million sales of singles from her debut album ‘English Rain’, a UK Number One, two Australian Number Ones, proper fan mania in Japan, a gold-selling album in the UK, a BBC Introducing YouTube channel whose views trumps those of Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Royal Blood, a signing by Storm model agency – all of that has fed, bled and rushed into her second album.

“I love putting music to ﬁlm, and seeing what can come out of that combination” The result is a bigger, bolder, fresher and brilliantly louder singer-songwriter. ‘Light Up The Dark’ is a collection of songs, written and recorded in a producer-friend’s house in a corner of Stoke Newington, North East London. Both intimate and expansive, they bristle with energy, crackle with atmosphere and swagger with a Feist-meets-Cat Power brainy cool. These are songs with attitude and ideas, written from the head and the heart, bound for the soul. “I’ve just seen stuff, and I wanted to write about more stuff,” is the 22-year-old’s simple explanation of the progression – expansion – evident on new songs like the euphoric title track and the punchy, scorchingly soulful fi rst single ‘Skeleton’. “The more you play the better you get. I did [2013’s debut album] ‘English Rain’ and then I went on tour for months and months. I got better at electric guitar, I got better at piano, I got better at writing. I met musicians and I hung out more. All of that was so good and useful when it came to writing and recording this one.” Lest we forget, Aplin was only 19 when she signed her record deal. Some of the songs on her debut album dated from the early teens of the country girl from Wiltshire. And, while she was a self-taught, self-made teenage artist who had founded her own label aged 15, and cultivated a huge social media following amongst her peers, she was still young. Then the world sat up. She was approached to cover Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power Of Love’ for John Lewis’ 2012 Christmas advertising campaign. Unlike, it seems, every other new (and established) artist in the country, Aplin hadn’t pursued the sync that is now – let’s be frank – one of the biggest exposure opportunities in the cultural calendar. She was just asked. The song hit Number One. “Then, outside of the UK, Japan was the first place to go mental,” Aplin grins. “They’re so into British culture in Japan, really fashionable and cool, so kind, and so passionate about music generally. And they really embraced me. They would really analyse my lyrics, and take such an interest in me and my music. I feel really comfortable there,” she says, as well she might after “six or seven” trips to the country.

And then Australia decided to blow up, too. The spark that lit the fi re Down Under was ‘The Power Of Love’. “I really love how music and film can go together,” says a woman with a keen visual eye (she conceptualises all her videos and artwork). “That’s why I did the John Lewis advert here: I love putting music to film, and seeing what can come out of that combination. So I wanted to see if I could do more with that than just that advert.” Sure enough, the power of the song transcended the UK festive market. In Australia, Aplin’s version was synced with TV drama called Resurrection. The show was a hit, and so was the song, all over again. “It went to Number One in Australia, so then I got called over to sing on their version of Dancing With The Stars. Then a girl on their X Factor used ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ – she was amazing and they made a massive deal of it. So they got me over too, to play on The X Factor,” she beams. Early last year, fi nally back in her adopted home of London, Aplin decided that she would alchemise all those places, ideas and experiences into her second album.

“It’s a bit loungey, a bit sleazy, and I can’t quite believe that I wrote it.”

Aplin went to the home studio of her friend Luke Potashnick, guitarist with blues rock band The Temperance Movement. They had co-written ‘November’ from ‘English Rain’, and she knew there was a creative spark and kinship there. She wanted to write with him, and have him produce her album. And she gathered around her a selection of musician pals, including her boyfriend Alfie and his brother Harry, the siblings who comprise Irish rock/folk duo Hudson Taylor. It was quickly apparent that something magical had been established. They worked in Stoke Newington for most of last year. “It was so much fun,” she says intently. “But it always felt like I was just hanging out at my mate’s house. It didn’t feel like work.” ‘Light Up The Dark’ is the first taste of the album of the same name, and it instantly telegraphs Aplin’s fresh outlook and new working methods. ‘Skeleton’, slated to be a single, is another case in point. Energetic with synthesised brass stabs, pounding piano and Hudson Taylor’s violin 24 MayHEM! | summer 2015

player, Aplin and her circle of intimates “bashed it together” in an hour. ‘Sweet Nothing’, with its infectious syncopated beat and giddy rush of a vocal, is another startling, invigorating left turn. ‘Fools Love’ was inspired by a Christmas trip to New Orleans. “We fired up the JUNO keyboard and got some weird brass sounds on it – rather that than get a brass section, which was the obvious thing to. It’s a bit loungey, a bit sleazy, and I can’t quite believe that I wrote it. That was another turning point for me.” ‘Shallow Love’ is something different again, a pulse-stopping ballad rich with gospel-inspired backing vocals that sound both heavenly-high and down-home. Then there’s ‘Heavy Heart’, currently Aplin’s personal favourite, a bluesy groove that showcases the new depth and range to her voice, and which was recorded on a vintage microphone. “I didn’t think mics mattered before, but they really do. And now, generally, it doesn’t sound like I’m trying too hard

when I sing. One of the main differences with this album is that before I felt I had to sing everything an octave above because of the size of the productions. Whereas this time I was really in to the production on ‘The Reminder’ by Feist – her voice is just here, right at the front, and everything sits around it perfectly.” Job done. On ‘Light Up The Dark’, Aplin has smashed it… It’s a heartfelt, homemade, sky-high collection of songs, “A lot of which are technically the demos – I’m really happy about that.” states this whip-smart, confident artist who knows what she wants and how to get it. Similarly, she wants to maintain artistic integrity over her new signing with prestigious modelling agency Storm. “It’s not like I want to go and be a model or anything. They’ll only ever book me to do something that reflects me and fits my music.” Gabrielle Aplin has seen the world, and she’s heard the world. And now the world is about to see and hear her all over again – in new, widescreen colour.

scientiFic marvels brute strenGth Take Asha Rani, 20, who successfully attempted the farthest distance to pull a plane by hair, female category, in Leicester. It seems she can be forgiven for this weird display of hair strength – her uncle Manjit Singh successfully pulled a double-decker bus by his hair prior. Asha pulled 6.8 tonnes of actual plane over 5 metres using a rope attached to her ponytail. 42 MayHEM! | summer 2015

Ok this one doesn’t really count as a wacky, ingenious freak of nature, but it certainly is relevant. It comes from the guys at Brewdog, an independent brewery in Scotland, who have just broken the record for a beer with the highest ABV ever (55%) aptly named The End Of History. Only 12 bottles were made, infused with nettles from the Scottish Highlands. They also come packaged in actual squirrels, thanks to a taxidermist who peeled them from the roadside.

only the irish This next record involves the Irish and Guinness. A very tall Guinness at that. The Auld Dubliner Public House filled an 8-foot-tall glass with 430 gallons of Guinness and got into the Guinness Book of World Records. I couldn’t find a source to confirm whether ‘most Guinness consumed in an hour’ was another record broken, although plenty of pubs on Paddy’s day would contest this I’m sure.

Italian vocal powerhouse, Andrea Faustini, came third in 2014’s series of X Factor and was a firm favourite in the competition after his very first audition. His debut album – the self penned gospel infused album, ‘Kelly’, released in July, reflects Andrea’s positive nature. “I’m such a positive person and I like to smile even in tough times”, he said, “give a little love!”. We catch up to find out more… For anyone not familiar with you, can you describe who Andrea Faustini is? I'm just a normal easy going guy you know, a little bit shy, I just like to know who's around me and then I'm fi ne. Last year you were runner up in the X Factor, were you gutted not to win or was it a blessing in disguise? I'm actually very happy because I've had the chance to work with a great team who really understand me. 44 MayHEM! | summer 2015

Despite not winning, you signed a record deal and released your debut album, 'Kelly'. What is it about? I co-wrote the album, so there's a lot of me in it. It's very gospel. The message I want to get across is to be kind to people you love and smile even in tough times. Kelly is a girl who is very brave who follows her dreams. She is my alter ego.

The album includes eight original songs. What can we expect from it? Well, there's a little bit of everything in this album. There's the positive funky side of me, there are ballads, and I can see myself reflected in this album. What is the idea behind your single, 'Give a Little Love'? The idea was to give a good preview of the album with gospel and R'n'B references. I wanted the album to be a positive message that reflects my personality. Tell us about your experience in recording the album… It was amazing. I never really like being in the studio, because it lacks emotion, but this time was different.

“I’m trying to live the moment and embrace everything that’s happening”

Is it easier to find fame and make a career of singing in the UK than in Italy? I think it's a very different industry musically. On one hand the UK offers more opportunity, but it's much harder. In Italy it's just diﬃcult for young people to express their music and get it out generally.. How often do you get back home? If depends, after the show I spent a month before returning for the X Factor tour. After that I tried to get back every week. Tell us about your experience since leaving the X Factor? The X Factor was incredible and I would do it again. It was very tiring, but it was so good, I did things I would never have been able to do, which was great for a young guy like me. If singing and the X Factor didn't work out, what was your back-up plan? Back home I was at University studying Chinese. I wasn't clear on a dream job, but I knew I wanted to do something with language that would involve traveling and learning new things. Employment in Italy is tough at the moment, so learning Chinese could land you with a great job.

So, from Rome in Italy, what brought you to the UK in the first place and how did you end up in the X Factor? The first time I came was for a holiday. I actually missed an email about the audition and returned home six days before they started. So I quickly booked a hotel and flights two days before the audition and came back. I’m a massive fan of the show, it has amazing opportunities. I wasn't expecting anything, so I just thought ‘go for it’. I actually entered the Italian X Factor and got four yeses, but I chose to stay with the British show. MAYHEMMAG |

How do feel about X Factor looking back? I just think it's been an incredible experience, and I've grown so much a person and artist, I don’t feel like I've changed much, I'm more open, but I'm still the same guy. Are you still in touch with any other live show competitors? Yeah, we all have a fun group chat on Whatsapp, so we keep in touch. What do your family make of the new album and your success? They're really happy, but they fi nd it hard to understand from so far away with me living here. They're very proud and excited for me. How have you kept yourself grounded over that last 12 months?

I feel like I'm the same person, so I just do the same things as I did before, I'm trying to embrace the experience. How do you maintain such positive energy? I don't have to maintain it, it's just there. Although it's a really hard job, I'm always asking myself ‘am I doing ok?’, and sometimes I'm afraid, but I'm coping and staying positive. When did you start singing? I started singing when I was very young, maybe three or four. Nobody told me to sing, I just needed to do it. I still just need to express myself by singing. Who are your inﬂuences? I love gospel and R'n'B music, so my influences are Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Jazmine Sullivan, Lianne La Havas, Beyonce, Alicia Keys and I actually love James Blake, I think what he does is so cool and soulful. Who would love to meet if you could? I would love to meet Stevie Wonder, he's one of those artists who is so big, if you meet them you can feel the energy they give. Where do you get your amazing shirts and sweaters? Well I love shopping and I love clothes and I'm always looking for new brands, but I also like cheaper clothes. I think Primark is amazing, H&M too, and I get a lot of stuff from ASOS. One of my favourite brands is Cos. Who inspires your fashion style? I'm fascinated by a lot of fashion bloggers who wear a variety of things, not necessary expensive things. They show you how to dress without spending loads. The world is your oyster right now, what does the future hold for Andrea Faustini? I just don't know, I'm trying to live the moment and embrace everything that's happening.

Production The animatronic, in this case a shark named Bruce by the crew members, is a trademark of Steven Spielberg. The sad fact is, Bruce spent most of its time broken down which meant it was unavailable for certain scenes, mainly due to the circuitry coming into contact with water. To overcome this fairly major issue Spielberg decided to cleverly roll the camera from the perspective of the shark which actually resulted in a more exciting, edge of the seat fear among movie goers in 1975. More amusingly, while visiting the set of Jaws to see his good friend Steven, George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars) as a joke put his head inside the animatronics head. Prankster Spielberg decided to sneakily close Bruce’s jaw with the controls legitimately trapping Lucas inside the animatronic. The story goes, once Lucas was freed from the clutches of Bruce everyone had disappeared afraid they’d broken the shark. 48 MayHEM! | summer 2015

imPact Initially released with an ‘A’ rating Jaws was unsuitable for younger viewers – the movie contained realistic violence and scenes of horror. The after effect left people afraid to swim in the sea fearing an attack by a great white shark, interestingly known as Galeophobia, which funnily enough saw a significant increase thereafter. Jaws made $7,061,513 in it’s opening weekend and made $260,000,000 in it’s initial run in theatres across the United States. This was almost doubled with worldwide exposure making $470,700,000 positioning Jaws as the highest grossing movie until Star Wars came along in 1977.

The movie industry has developed enormously since 1975, but there are occasional subtle nods to this cult classic due to it’s success. The most recent featuring in Jurassic World, produced by Spielberg, where the Mosasaur eats the shark. In Disney Pixar’s Finding Nemo the great white shark is named Bruce, which is an homage to the original animatronic. In Back to the Future II, also directed by Spielberg, Marty goes to a ‘future’ cinema which is reshowing Jaws with a huge futuristic hologram of the shark. That, as they say, is a wrap but keep your eyes peeled for sneaky shark references in Speilbergs future classics. Queue the music!

First movement The Proms can trace its origins back to 10th August 1895. Musical impresario Robert Newman hit upon the idea of attracting concert hall audiences, who had little to no access to formal classical music recitals, into a higher strand of culture, with a simple goal – he is believed to have said ‘I am going to run nightly concerts and train the public by easy stages. Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music.’

hoW did he do it? The answer was simple – low ticket prices and a relatively informal atmosphere. Eating, drinking, and smoking were all allowed when the first ‘prommers’ (as audience members came to be known) settled in for performances – the move to the Albert Hall was brought about by German bombs in 1941.

henry takes the staGe Classical music. It’s for snobs, or people wanting to appear cultured, right? Not necessarily. For eight weeks each summer (this year, from 13th July to 13th September) the Proms brings a little sophistication to the season, with the Royal Albert Hall giving over to an enthusiastic celebration of high musical culture.

Conductor Sir Henry Wood was brought on board by Newman to select and oversee works by various composers for performance by orchestra, initially offering a mix of popular and classical music before opting to turn his baton solely to classical by the early 1920s. He is also responsible for the now standard setup of the majority of Proms ensembles.

Eagle-eyed viewers of BBC Four coverage of the Proms schedule will notice that the fi rst and second violins are placed together to the left of the conductor, while the cellos are to their right, just one of many Wood innovations stumbled upon as he toyed with the possibilities open to him – most of which he seized, exposing audiences to more than 100 British works in ten years (1900–1910) as well as European composers (Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner among them). Indeed, Strauss was so moved by Wood’s performance of his Symphonia Domestica that he wrote “I cannot leave London without an expression of admiration for the splendid Orchestra which Henry Wood’s master hand has created in such a short time.”

modern classical The fi rst and last nights of the Proms tend to be seen as the main draw – this year’s event starting with an exploration of the fascinating relationship between music and the mind. Enjoy big band jazz with vocalist Clare Teal. Radio 6 Music returns for the second ever 6 Music Prom. Actor Mark Gatiss joins presenter Matthew Sweet for the first ever Sherlock Holmes Prom, exploring the famous detective’s musical passions as well as music from TV and fi lm scores. This years Proms round up with Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

a liFe For me Ever fancied cutting loose from dull old reality and sailing the high seas? Sadly, legally it might be a bit tricky – but fear not, landlubbers, for September 19th is ‘International Talk Like A Pirate Day!’ Created by friends John Baur and Mark Summers, or Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy, as they’ve been known since creating the holiday in 1995, it’s been hailed as a celebration of the golden age of piracy. So, climb aboard and prepare to set sail – all hands on deck!

the Golden aGe The idea for the holiday itself came about as an unlikely result of a racquetball injury and the subsequent cry of pain – a loud ‘ Aaarr!’. From that moment on an idea was born and the two friends sent a letter to Miami Herald humour columnist Dave Barry, who helped them get media coverage for the event, which quickly spread internationally with the result that people in several countries have now embraced the madness. But what is the golden age of piracy? Historians have it as a period from approximately 1650–1726, in which three crucial states of events took place, widely believed to be the following: 1) The ‘Buccaneering’ period of approximately 1650 to 1680, characterised by Anglo-French seamen based onJamaica and Tortuga attacking Spanish colonies and shipping in the Caribbean and eastern Paciﬁc. 52 MayHEM! | summer 2015

2) The Pirate Round of the 1690’s, associated with long-distance voyages from Bermuda and the Americas to rob Muslim and East India Company targets in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. 3) The post-Spanish Succession period, extending from 1716 to 1726, when Anglo-American sailors and privateers left unemployed by the end of the War of the Spanish Succession turned en masse to piracy in the Caribbean, the American eastern seaboard, the West African coast and the Indian Ocean.

PoPulaarrr culture See, it isn’t all Captain Jack Sparrow. Several pirates from the Golden Age have been immortalised in literature, music, film and television. Most of you will probably be aware of the likes of Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach (played by Ian McShane in Pirates Of The Caribbean – On Stranger Tides, drawing inspiration from the 1987 novel On Stranger Tides, with the film’s make-up people seemingly turning him into a nautical equivalent of shock-rock titan Alice Cooper) Bartholomew ‘Black Bart’ Roberts and Henry Avery, (mentioned by name in the 1966 Doctor Who serial The Smugglers, in which first Doctor William Hartnell finds himself thrust into the search for Avery’s gold and appearing on screen played by Hugh Bonneville alongside Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor in The Curse Of The Black Spot) – but the most lauded of all must be Treasure Island’s Long John Silver.

As well as lending his name to a trouser style, he has his own American seafood restaurant, several appearances in cinema. Robert Newton’s portrayal proving most inﬂuential, winning him the reward of becoming ‘patron saint’ of ‘International Talk Like A Pirate Day’, having appeared in the ﬁlm which set the standard for future screen pirates – Disney’s 1950 adaptation of Treasure Island, after which he appeared as Silver again in 1954’s Long John Silver and a follow-up TV series, The Adventures Of Long John Silver).

hail the ale! It’s impossible of course not to mention the inevitable soundtrack to skullduggery. Scottish ‘pirate-metal’ group Alestorm have released three albums of belowdeck barnstorming – ‘Captain Morgan’s Revenge’, ‘Black Sails At Midnight’ and ‘Back Through Time’. If that’s not enough to get you wielding an air cutlass, I don’t know what is. With Alestorm currently the only band flying the pirate metal flag, why not form your own? The combination of guitar, bass, drums and lashings of rum can only end well… can’t it? Or if you fancy something a little more sedate, there’s always the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, ‘The Pirates Of Penzance’. It tells the story of Frederic, a young man released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates on his 21st birthday. So far, so ordinary. But he was born on February 29, meaning he only has a birthday each leap year – under the terms of the apprenticeship he must serve his pirate masters for another 63 years. Beats a visit to the job centre I suppose! The most popular song from the production is undoubtedly ‘The Major-General’s Song’. All together now – I am the very model of a modern major-general…no? Getting a dog is a big commitment for a couple and should never be entered into lightly. Mayhem! is here with a few things to consider

make sure you’re ready You need to have some serious conversations about whether you’re ready to look after a dog, not just now but in 10–15 years time. Dogs aren’t just a commitment in so far as walking them and picking up their poo, they’re a huge fi nancial commitment too and will dictate how you live you’re lives for the foreseeable future. No more swanning off to festivals or going on long weekends for example (unless you take the dog with you). You also need to consider how you’d handle going on holiday or deal with life changing decisions such as moving house, having kids, travelling, the list goes on. 54 MayHEM! | summer 2015

do your research Firstly have a discussion about what you both want from a dog. If one of you wants a big, boisterous dog to play with and the other wants it to be carried around in a little bag and sit on a velvet cushion looking cute, you’re going to have problems from the outset. Once you have a criteria of what you both want, you can go and look at the breeds available to suit your needs. For example, if you suffer with allergies then a poodle or short-haired dog which doesn’t shed would be high on your priority list. Also try to be flexible and don’t set your sights on a particular breed just yet, you may think they’re cute, but they may be completely unsuited to your lifestyle.

do more research Once you’ve decided on a couple of breeds for your shortlist, do even more research. Many dogs have genetic problems which could lead to huge vet bills as they get older. Alsatians, for example often suffer from arthritis in their hips and spaniels are particularly prone to gum disease. That’s not to say you shouldn’t go for those breeds, just go into it forearmed with as much information as possible. Visit your local dog shelter and ask any questions you may have. They’ll be happy to help and would rather that than end up with your dog when you decide you can’t look after it any more.

Get insurance Pet insurance can be expensive too, upwards of ÂŁ30 a month in most cases. However it will save you a world of pain if anything happens to your dog. A broken leg could cost over ÂŁ1000 to set if you pay in one go, so that monthly payment is well worth it to avoid those unexpected bills. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just accidents to worry about, Schnauzers are particularly susceptible to diabetes, for example, and your insurance will contribute toward its care for the duration of the illness within policy limits. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be tempted to put it off, if you get insurance once an issue has already been diagnosed the policy may not cover it or you could end up paying more.

be sociable Introduce your dog to as many experiences as possible when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re young. Things like other people, children, other dogs, cats, people on bicycles, people with beards, loud noises, cars, roads etc etc etc! Your dog needs to understand that these are part of their world and nothing to be feared. Fear is usually the cause of wider issues like aggression so the more you do the better your dog will be. Take your dog to puppy socialisation classes where they can learn basic commands and play with other dogs in a controlled environment. This is great for their development. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting an adult dog, make sure you fi nd out if they have any behavioural issues fi rst and see an expert trainer to see if it can be corrected, it will pay dividends later.

traininG is onGoinG Teaching your dog to be obedient is a lifelong task. While most dogs will learn basic commands quickly, if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enforce your â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rulesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; early on and become lapse in your training your dog will quickly realise and start misbehaving. Continue your training while on your walks too. Most dogs will perform in the comfort of your own home when you have a treat in your hand, but the real trick is for them to do it when they have distractions around them and you have empty hands! Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all heard the saying â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a dog is for life, not just for Christmasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and nothing could be further from the truth. However if you have thought about it fully, done all your research and are committed to their welfare and training, you will have a happy, loyal and well behaved friend for life!

Perhaps it’s down to his overwhelming self-criticism. “I get down on myself,” he explains, head cast downward, obscuring those deep soulful blue eyes. “I never feel like I truly get a part. Like I really nail it. You constantly hear you should have no regrets but I do, I always do.” On that cheery note, the hunky bearded star – best known for blockbusters Prince of Persia and The Day After Tomorrow and more recent darker fare, Nightcrawler and Prisoners – is in passionate mode for his latest release. Directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua, Gyllenhaal is a champion boxer whose world crumbles when his adoring wife (Rachel McAdams) is tragically gunned down. Unable to cope with life, he loses custody of their daughter and spirals into pit of despair. Until a rogue boxing promoter (a spirited 50 Cent) gives him a second chance. Critics are calling Gyllenhaal’s performance a revelation and predicting a second Oscar nomination after a Best Supporting Actor nod for Brokeback Mountain in 2005. Let’s firstly speak about your transformation, your physical transformation, which is breathtaking, especially after how different you appear in Nightcrawler. How did you do it? A lot of training. Hard-training. Training like a boxer, existing like a boxer, or at least how one can to play a boxer in a movie. But what did you do? Weights, resistance, yoga...? It was mostly about skill. Learning the skills, the knowledge. I trained for five months, went to a training camp. Immersed myself in that skill. Not just for the body but also for the mind. I was trying to hone the unconscious, have it become part of my routine, two times a day and with that, stuff, it just happens to your body. But this film was a full-on commitment. All of them are, and I treat each job the same but some require more commitment than others and this was full on. Especially as I hadn’t ever really boxed and within the movie world, there are some remarkable sport films that raised the bar. MAYHEMMAG |

But it’s his pumped up, ripped torso that’s gaining all the headlines, especially as it comes straight after he lost 30lbs for a tour de force performance in Nightcrawler. The currently single star, who’s previously dated Kirsten Dunst, Taylor Swift and model Alyssa Miller, is not giving up the secret of his brawny prowess however, crediting his success with ‘energy and truth’. In a buttoned up black shirt, he does speak about his ‘dark’ career direction, sibling rivalry with fellow movie-star sister, Maggie, wise words from godfather, Paul Newman and the enduring appeal of his breakthrough, Donnie Darko.

Surely you were happy when the physical process was over? I’m never satisfied to say goodbye to a character because I never feel I get them fully. But as regards the physical, yes, the dedication and the time you have to put into it, the rigour and sacrifice, I’ll be honest, I’m not planning on doing again anytime soon. It’s a powerful story about one man’s struggle against emotional and physical odds. What do you hope audiences will take from Southpaw? It’s a very human story. About fragility, loss and life. It’s about the people that support you, that give you heart to get through the pain that makes you into a champion. And ultimately a real man. Aside from the training itself, did you immerse yourself in the boxing world? We worked with the best, the most honest people with pure energy that fed into the film and which hopefully the audience will feel. And yeah, I watched fights. It wasn’t so much research but it was important for me to see two men in a ring, asking themselves who they really are.

Your roles of late have been complex with intricate personas and intents. Is this what you go for? It’s not about a genre, or a specific character, I never go for that. I want an honesty and a beating heart that exists underneath the material. I want to feel the emotion of the story. Someone said to me once, my mother being a screenwriter, she’s not going to agree with me at all, but great movies have been made from not so great scripts and not so great movies have been made from wonderful scripts. And you do need a great script, I totally agree with that. But ultimately, you need an energy and a drive and belief, whatever that is. And that drive, that belief can change a film from its inception and creation to the result.

lEft Hook Would you agree that your roles in the last few years have resided in a dark place? Have they all come from a dark place? I don’t see it, that’s not how I would describe it. There’s an honesty there that could be misconstrued, or easily misinterpreted as dark. They operate in darker worlds, but many of them have decent moral compasses. Most of them. Dark worlds have an authentic feeling to me. They feel more real to me than happy, shiny bright. But good to move away from dark from time to time? I’m about to go on Broadway, for Little Shop of Horrors, there’s certainly a combination, and a variety there. I’m trusting my decisions, I trust myself to know what’s right. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done and the people I’ve worked with. And my goal is to keep mining, keep going down, do my thing, moving towards those depths. I stay true to my gut, my instincts. I’m calm. That’s all that matters. I try to not let anything else come into my mind. You’ve certainly moved away from blockbuster fare of Day After Tomorrow and Prince of Persia? That’s all down to growth and maturity. I’m no longer the person that was in movies I made ten years ago. I’m a different incarnation of that person. And one of the aspects that changes your career is that, in the initial stages people are telling you what you fit into. That’s part of it and you listen. Then time passes and you might do some things that people like, affording you the decisions to make yourself. Who gave you the best advice in your career? lights and the business of movies, so often can get you enticed because it’s amazing, but your life and your family are the priority. Is there a healthy sibling rivalry between Maggie and yourself? No, I think we’re too old to have those feelings. We’d never think about it. Maybe when we were younger, sure but that’s normal. It’s about being incredibly focused and concentrating on the good work for us. We want to encourage one another to do good work. Honest work. We don’t always manage that but we’re trying. And that goes for my brother-in-law, Peter Sarsgard, too. It was the family business, so to speak. Were you always headed towards acting? It is a family business, you’re right! There were questions of doing other things maybe, when I was growing up, even a few years ago. It’s only recently become my true life’s passion. This is what I want to do. Are there certain roles that helped you come to that realisation? If I ever did that I would be taking a lot of people out of the mix, quite honestly. So I’m not at liberty to pick any one in particular. A few then? If I had to pick, I loved Jarhead with Sam Mendes. That was a special fi lm for me, mainly because my brother-in-law was in the movie with me, though he wasn’t my brother-inlaw at the time. That was wonderful, and training as a marine, that was great. Donnie was a great experience too.

It’s always the same people, coming from a specific age group, 18–25. It’s like a rite of passage. Earlier this year, you were robbed of an Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler. Does acclaim matter to you? I’ll be honest – I would have been thrilled if Nightcrawler had been recognised that way because it means more people see the fi lm. But I don’t do the job for that. I do what I do to educate myself about life and learn to practice empathy. When you do your research, you see what real people are doing in the world. Although there is nothing compared to what the people do for real. So what’s next for you? A few more acting jobs coming out. I did this movie about Everest, based on the terrible tragedy in 1996. It’s such a powerful moment and an amazing movie, it’s going to be with Jason Clarkem Josh Brolin and John Hawkes. And after that, a fi lm with Jean Marc Valee called Demolition. Are you working towards directing at some point? I love filmmaking, so that’s sort of where I’m headed. It sounds presumptive of me, but we all have to have goals.

Why is Donnie Darko such a special film for so many? It wasn’t for a long time so for that reason, it makes you wonder what exactly equates to success. I remember making it, we felt we had done something hugely successful. But it took it’s time. I woke up a few

mountain bikinG If you already have a bike then great! If not, you can usually get a half-decent one for around £150, both in store and online. A more common problem is fi nding a good spot to ride it. Luckily, there are lots of bike sites available online to help solve that problem, with details of routes through local beauty spots such as Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Eartham Wood, Duncton Down, and Bignor Hill (north of Chichester).

mountain boardinG This sport was developed by those perpetual adrenaline junkies, snowboarders, who were looking for some summer fun. It’s best described as a hybrid between skateboarding and snowboarding. Your feet are strapped to the board, much like snowboarding, but if you fall there is no soft landing, like skateboarding… exhilarating!

sand yachtinG If you like the seaside, but prefer not to get cold and wet – try sand yachting (aka land yachting or land sailing). There are a lot fewer things for you to have to fiddle with than in a real boat and a second-hand craft can be yours for as little as £200. But, beware, if you get a taste for it, a top-of-the-range model can easily cost 20 times that.

canoeinG kitinG One for adults and children alike – or just the child in you. This is a popular sport on most Portsmouth beaches and parks when the breeze picks up. Portsmouth also has its own International Kite Festival on Southsea Common. Is this a sport? Well, the amount of kite kit available suggests so, and trying to wrestle with large pieces of wind-battered sail for hours will certainly give you a workout! There are some rules however – for example, did you know that you can’t fly a kite higher than 200ft at night unless it has lights? MAYHEMMAG |

Most have us have been canoeing at some stage in our lives, probably at some forced-fun school trip a hundred years ago. But it’s fantastic exercise and a great way to get back to nature and relax. You will need a licence to drop a boat in one of Britain’s many waterways, but this comes free when you become a member of Canoe England (membership £32.75 a year). They can also hook you up with a club in your area so you can get started. You can also get a used canoe for about £100 – a small price to pay for paddling down a willow-lined canal and taking in the summer paradise.

Fell runninG If you’re a keen jogger, then why not take it to the next level this summer? Fell running is basically off-road running, but hardcore fell runners take part in competitions where their navigational skills are also tested – a bit like high-speed orienteering! It’s also a great way to keep super-fit and take in the Hampshire countryside and make new mates.

If you're prone to fi nding yourself on the London underground whether commuting to and from work or just as one of London's home tourists, you may be familiar with a plethora of information or warning stickers plastered throughout the tube trains and platforms.

British Transport Police are however battling a wave of guerrilla graﬃti artists of a different kind. The work of an anonymous clever-clog has appeared in place of the oﬃcial stickers with subversive messages set in the same colours and fonts. This is illegal vandalism but we think some of them are quite funny!
