IN EVERYDAY FOODS While it’s important to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly, did you know that some food can actually reduce your risk of cancer, prevent sunburn, or even reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s? Read on to find out more… Chili PePPers Fancy a vindaloo tonight? Mexicans have sworn by chili peppers for their health benefits for many years. The ingredient Capsaicin which is found in the hotter peppers is great for reducing inflammation, pain relief, heart problems and fi ghting colds! The green ones are the best.

tea

A good cup of tea will make things right. Tea helps soothe stress and keep you relaxed. Three cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Whether it’s black, green or white tea, the ingredient Catechins, is a diseasefi ghting type of flavonoid and antioxidant. (Can’t go wrong with another antioxidant). The longer you steep the tea, the more flavonoids in your brew.

Prepare your salad the day before you eat it. When the lettuce is shredded the day before it will quadruple its antioxidant content. Shred the lettuce and place in a plastic bag with a paper towel, to absorb any extra moisture and pop it into the fridge until the next day.

tomatoes Not just sunscreen can protect our skin in the hot summer months, but tomatoes too. The paste is the most effective, (eat it, don’t spread it on your body). Lycopene is the natural pigment in tomatoes that makes them turn red. This Lycopene ingredient fi lters out the sun rays to protect our skin from sunburn and keep your skin looking young. 8

ARE YOU

saD? If you’re finding it hard to get out of bed in the mornings you could be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, (SAD). This is a seasonal depression disorder which occurs during those cold winter months. Mayhem! explains…

what is saD? SAD is a seasonal depression disorder, known as a winter depression because the symptoms mainly occur in the winter months. The main symptoms of SAD are low mood and a lack of motivation. SAD sufferers tend to sleep more and be less active. The symptoms vary from person to person, such as; feeling irritable, feelings of despair, feelings of guilt, low self-esteem, indecisiveness, tearfulness, stress, anxiousness and a reduced sex drive. 10 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

what’s the Cause?

who is aFFeCteD? It affects around two million people in the UK and over 12 million across europe. SAD is most common in women, in fact woman are three times more likely to be affected with SAD than men. SAD normally develops in people aged between 18–30.

Unfortunately there isn’t an exact cause of SAD, it’s been linked to reduced sun exposure and the days getting shorter. That’s why SAD symptoms are most severe during December, January and February. Sunlight triggers the brains’ chemicals and hormones, which stimulates and controls a person’s mood, appetite and sleep. You can get an assessment from your GP to confi rm if you are suffering with SAD.

what to Do NeXt? SAD is a common type of depression and it can be very difficult to live and carry out normal day-today duties. There are a range of therapies available to help prevent symptoms such as; light therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, (CBT) and medication. Speak to your GP to assess your mental health and they will suggest a recommended treatment, tailored to you.

Portes Des soleil

BaNkso One of the best places to set your skis on the snow is the resort of Bankso, southwest of Bulgaria. A popular destination that certainly won’t leave a dent in your wallet. Bankso, full of rich Bulgarian tradition and history is fast becoming one of eastern European’s best ski resorts. With an impressive investment granted it now boasts a modern ski centre complete with a ski school. With 75 pistes ranging from 1000m to 2600m, there are runs for all abilities. The town of Bankso is set at the bottom of Pirin National Park, a world heritage site. Skiers and boarders are spoilt with the spectacular views when coasting down the slopes. There are plenty of places to rest your weary legs after a day on the snow and enjoy the apres ski. Check out Bulgaria Ski (bulgariaski.com) for all your accommodation and ski needs. A little closer to home, try the popular destination Portes des Soleil, nestled perfectly between France and Switzerland. If you’re after a traditional and characteristic resort then head to Morzine. A picturesque French market town which has kept it’s traditional alpine roots despite being a busy tourist destination. Morzine is ideal for families and school excursions. Like many other resorts, a ski school is on hand to instruct beginners and those wanting to refresh their knowledge. Morzine has a total of 81 pistes ranging from green (easy) to black (hard) and 67 ski lifts to get you to your desired piste. MAYheMMAG |

asPeN If you fancy a longer break and in need of an indulgence, why not venture further afield to America. Aspen in Colorado is a favourite for the keen skier. The silver mining town is home to four resorts, Snow mass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk each offering something different, depending on your ability. Buttermilk is excellent for the newbie on the slopes, with plenty of green runs. If you’re an experienced skier and have a somewhat daredevil streak then give Highlands a go, famous for the Highland Bowl, seen to many as real hardcore skiing. Aspen has one of the world’s best ski schools, so your money will certainly be put to good use. There is plenty to do after a days ski with many restaurants and bars. Accommodation ranges from bed and breakfasts to five star hotels, all dependant on what floats your boat. For more detailed information visit ski.com or coloradoski.com Flights leave from London Heathrow. These are just a few of many destinations across the globe to unleash the inner skier in you.

FeeLing FuLLer For Longer

huNger GAMES Not sure what you should or shouldn’t be eating, not to mention when! Don’t worry, Mayhem! has it covered with this simple guide to keeping your hunger at bay throughout the day.

BreakFast

eleVeNses

luNCh

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Aim to eat breakfast 30 minutes after waking up in order to replenish your blood sugar levels. This should be the largest meal of your day and allows for the most carbohydrates.

The time between breakfast and lunch can seem like forever. These healthy snacks will keep you going and avoid the temptation of the vending machine. Go for potassium fi lled snacks, such as a banana or dried fruit.

You’ll be ready for lunch around four hours after breakfast. Choose something that fi lls you up for the rest of your working day, instead of falling into a food coma as soon as you’ve fi nished. Something fresh and lean that’s bursting with Iron.

Porridge, yoghurts, fruit, eggs

Nuts, fruit, crispbread

Potato with tuna or cottage cheese

Some cereals, fruit juices and pastries

Biscuits, fizzy drinks, chocolate

Fast food or ready-made sandwiches

3Pm sNaCk

DiNNer

miDNight muNCh

We usually crave sugary treats during an afternoon slump. Opt for a healthy nutritious snack to keep the cravings at bay, and to make the end of the working day more productive. A low fat calcium snack is perfect.

You should be eating dinner approximately three hours after your afternoon snack, but not too late or your food will take longer to digest. At this time you need protein, as well as some low carbohydrates.

Avoid anything too heavy at this time of night. If you’re still hungry when you wake up in the middle of the night, opt for lighter choices such as milky drinks, or cheese and crackers.

Sliced apple with peanut butter, crackers with houmous, low fat yoghurt

Vegetables, meat, whole wheat pasta or brown rice

Granola, crackers, plain popcorn, wholemeal toast or banana

Crisps and sugary sweets

Dessert. Wait an hour and if you’re still hungry, opt for fruit or yoghurt.

Heavy carb foods such as chips.

green Fingers WRITTEN BY grAhAM brown

There’s no need to pack your BBQ and outdoor furniture away just yet. With another spell of warm weather predicted, we at Mayhem! believe it’s the perfect time of year for all things green fingered, so here are our top five garden tips for the coming months.

eVergreeNs aND PereNNials Although the seasons have changed you don’t have to wait until next year to update your garden. There are plenty of evergreens and perennials to plant now that will give interest, colour and variety to your borders, like honeysuckle, grasses or hardy ferns.

AUTUMN

garDeNiNg Clear the Clutter

sPriNg iNto aCtioN

While the weather is still mild take advantage of the extra daylight hours to tidy sheds and garages, clear up weeds, pressure washer patios, preserve decking and fences, sharpen tools, and empty out ponds and borders. Protect or bring inside plants that may not survive the harsher winter temperatures, and pick any remaining ripe fruit.

Autumn is the essential time for planting bulbs while the earth is still warm and before the frosts set in. It provides a great opportunity to prepare the garden for spectacular spring colours. Use good quality compost and choose from daffodils, tulips, crocus, snowdrops, the list goes on. Check out your nearest garden centre for a massive variety.

16 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

greeN grass It’s called ‘the fall’ for good reason. Leaves dropping off trees may look picturesque, but can still do damage to your lawn if left for weeks. Regular raking of leaves ensures lawns stay looking green for longer, and prevent encouraging slugs and other garden pests. Also adjust lawn mowers to higher setting as grass grows at slower rate during colder months.

timBer! Think of employing a professional surgeon to help prune any trees you may have, especially the harder to reach branches where specialist equipment is required. This will prevent any worries come the strong winter winds, and also help shape the trees. keep them in good health and stimulate new growth for years to come.

FOR YOUR HAIR AND SKIN

FaCial sPriNg CleaN Before we introduce our amazing treatments for soft, nourished skin, you need to give yourself a deep facial cleanse to remove any dirt and dead skin cells. Use this mask at least once a month for a deep cleanse. This treatment is suitable for all skin types. In a blender, mix some cabbage for 30 seconds, then add one tablespoon of honey and olive oil and mix for a further 10 seconds. Once combined, apply the mixture onto cleansed skin including your neck. As we’re deep cleansing the skin, the mask needs to be kept on for at least 30 minutes. 20 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

FaCial NourishiNg treatmeNt One way to achieve soft and smooth skin is to get rid of excess dead skin cells. This treatment is perfect for a little pick me up or as a weekly mask and is perfect for all skin types. Beat one egg yolk and mix with one teaspoon of olive oil, then mix two to three teaspoons of oatmeal. If you have no oatmeal, use one mashed banana. After mixing thoroughly apply to your cleansed face and neck and leave for 15–20 minutes. Rinse and leave skin at least 10 minutes before applying any make-up or other skin care products.

hair treatmeNt FaCial aCNe remeDy When it comes to acne, it’s important to take more care as we don’t want to irritate the skin. This two ingredient mask is perfect for new or old acne, scarring and overall nourishing of the skin to look more hydrated. Apply once or twice a week. Grab an orange and grate the peel, add one teaspoon of honey and mix. Apply to the skin for about 5–10 minutes allowing the mixture to be absorbed. Before rinsing, exfoliate the dried mask to get rid of those unwanted dead skin cells. Rinse and apply moisturiser.

In winter, our hair becomes dry, brittle and is prone to split ends. To get your hair looking smooth and sleek all you need is a few oils. In a bowl, mix four tablespoons of olive oil and three tablespoons of one of your favourites (almond oil, coconut oil, etc). Apply the mixture over the hair avoiding the roots. Distribute the treatment evenly using a comb. Wrap the hair in a towel for 25 minutes. Then wash out and follow with your chosen shampoo and conditioner. hello beautiful hair. Before proceeding with any treatment it’s wise to test a small amount of the mixture on your arm to ensure you have no unwanted reaction. If you are still unsure check with your GP.

HOW TO THROW A STRESS-FREE

WRITTEN BY FionA stAnton

DiNNer Party

There’s nothing quite like getting around a table with your nearest and dearest to share a meal and a few bottles of plonk, but for the host it can be a very stressful }event. We’re here with a few simple tips so everyone can have a good time, including you!

Cut yourselF some slaCk Most importantly, try not to stress out. It’s a casual dinner party and the guests will be happy to see you and enjoy your company. Take shortcuts where possible, buy appetisers that are simple, “chip and dip, anyone?”

laugh it oFF Your guests aren’t expecting the meal to be perfect and if your dish is slightly overcooked – at least your food mess-ups will make the dinner party memorable. Don’t take yourself too seriously, enjoy the evening and laugh with your friends. Try to downplay any mistakes and never apologise, after all that’s how it’s supposed to look and taste. 22 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

CleaN as you go keeP it simPle Stick to dishes that you know well and are easy to cook. That way there’s little room for error. Try not to experiment too much unless you’re a seasoned pro.

PrePare Do all the peeling and chopping in advance – cutting down on your cooking time gives you more time with your guests. Try setting your table in the morning and don’t forget the dessert.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a dishwasher try washing up as you go to cut down on the pile of dishes you’ll be faced with at the end of the night. If you don’t have a dishwasher, try asking a friend who does if you can host at theirs?

set the toNe Nobody wants awkward silences at a dinner party or if your guests are too busy enjoying your delicious cuisine to worry about talking. So have some ‘atmosphere’ music in the background, set it low so it’s not overpowering, but just enough to break the silence.

Luxury Chocolate Gifts Party games

Dim the lights Don’t make it uncomfortably romantic among friends, but dim the lights a little so they’re not so harsh – think mood lighting. Use candles and soft lighting. It’ll make you and your guests look prettier and set the mood for the evening.

Delegate like a Boss If you want to keep things really casual and chilled out, divvy up the jobs. Ask guests to bring a dessert or drinks. This takes the pressure off you and is a totally acceptable request. Guests always ask “Can I bring anything?”, so why not take them up on it?

Choose guests wisely If you are throwing a dinner party for a large number of guests, think about personality clashes, especially if they don’t know each other. Party games can be an ice-breaker and help everyone feel relaxed. Pick an “Anchor Guest” who is proactively funny and choose the guests around him/her.

If your food leaves guests wanting to grab a McDonalds on their way home, then you can still redeem yourself by choosing some excellent memorable party games at the end of the meal, (when they’ve had a few too many). Here are a couple of ideas:

1) One person at a time has to tell a ridiculous story that’s hard to believe, it can either be a truth or a lie. Have an opening line and the other diners will ask you questions to figure out if you’re lying or not. 2) Grab some post-its and play the good old fashioned celebrity game. Player A has to secretly write down a celebrity on a post-it. Player B sticks it on their forehead and player B has to guess who it is. 3) With the same post-its, jot down a few funny phrases like, “I used to be a skateboard champion,” pop these cheeky phrases under each person’s dinner plate. Try to throw it into the conversation and see if anyone notices. Whatever you do, don’t play Monopoly!

THE

With the upcoming Victor Frankenstein movie we can’t help but get pumped up, but before you get too excited, let’s take a moment to look past the monster and acknowledge the man standing behind him.

FraNkeNsteiN MAN

WRITTEN BY sonni cArpenter

Frankenstein is one of the most beloved ‘monster’ stories of all time, but it’s not just the Shelley novel that sparked this cult obsession with the creature that defies both life and death; it’s the hundreds of movies and TV shows in which Frankenstein himself has been portrayed and turned into one of the greatest anti-hero’s in film history. Over the decades since the 1930’s the key question has changed, who is the true Frankenstein monster; creature or creator? In many renditions of the story, Victor Frankenstein has been portrayed as crazy, miserable, broken, obsessive, scared among other negative emotions and ideas. But the doctor may be simpler described and labelled than with cognitive issues and science; the strong underlying purpose of the 24 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

doctor is that he is both life and death. The Frankenstein man is famous for his reanimation of a still corpse, giving him that aspect of physical life, yet the involvement of loss, murder and a wave of consequence gives him a personality trait of death. however, this is how we know Victor to be in the past, he may be different in this future. With all the Frankenstein movies made over the past 70 years or so and the success of hit TV show Penny Dreadful, audiences are getting excited to see more. The new movie Victor Frankenstein, in cinemas this autumn is taking you to a different corner of the story putting assistant Igor at the forefront. The pressure is on for those involved in the production of this movie. They’ve found a small pinch of

originality in an already tired idea and have a very important character showing you the Victor he knew. But who is Victor? Who will Victor be other than a mad creator who is a horseman within himself? With this movie being based more around Victor than his creation we know that this new rendition can go many ways and take Victor to places we’ve always seen him, but with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe playing the master and assistant duo, we have no idea what to expect from our own little Victor in this generation of classic appreciation. So who is the true monster; creature or creator? Well it turns out that question will be asked again this Halloween in cinemas around the globe and the question may just be answered.

The new Outback is now in its fi ft h generation and has really come of age. It features Subaru’s much-loved symmetrical all-wheel-drive system making it highly able on the road and nearly imperious off it. There’s acres of space inside and cabin quality has moved up a notch too. Luggage space is 512/1848 litres. From £27,995.

sPaCe ESTATE OF MIND! Peugeot 308 sw The new 308 SW is hard to beat if it’s space you’re after. It can swallow 610 litres of luggage, plus another 70 in an underfloor storage area. Drop the rear seats for a whopping 1600 litres. Proven engines, well-equipped, comfortable and a good solid drive, what’s not to like? From £17,145. 26 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

With car buyers falling over themselves in the rush for the ubiquitous crossover or SUV, is the estate car market in danger of imminent demise? Not a bit of it! Here in the UK, we bought 292,911 new estate cars last year proving that the conventional two-box estate still remains the preferred family load lugger. Here’s our pick from the current crop…

kia Cee’D sPortswagoN Now here’s an all-round bargain. It has a decent sized boot (528/1660 litres), the prices are honest and it’s inexpensive to run. Well-equipped even in base-spec ‘1’, the Cee’d Sportswagon is a comfortable car and a reasonable drive – and don’t forget that 7-year transferable warranty. From £15,650.

VolVo XC70 Based on the already spacious and refi ned V70, the XC70 gains ride height, front and rear scuff plates, body cladding and chunkier tyres to offer a more rugged appearance. Add Volvo’s reputation for safety and the XC70 makes a lot of sense. But it’s pricey though. Boot space: 575/1600 litres, priced from £34,470.

VolkswageN Passat estate It may look similar to the previous model but the newest, eighth generation Passat estate is better to drive, more practical and has more space than ever (650/1780 litres). Lighter than the model it replaces, the new Passat estate has improved ride and handling, good fit-and-fi nish, improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions. From £23,870.

DaCia logaN mCV Dacia’s ‘Maximum Capacity Vehicle’ offers exemplary load carrying ability for an extremely modest price. The 1.2-litre model in austere Access trim is the cheapest estate car available in the UK, so is ideal for those on a restricted budget. There’s a very useful 573/1518-litre boot capacity too. From £6,99.

auDi a6 aVaNt The A6 Avant estate offers an excellent range of engines and all Audis have attractive looks and well-built interiors. It may not be quite as fun to drive as the BMW 5-Series, but it’s got a huge 565-litre boot that rises to 1680 litres with the rear seats down. From £34,345.

maZDa6 tourer The Mazda6 Tourer is a stylish option – with all the substance you’ll need. It’s one of the most engaging cars to drive, while the strong petrol and diesel engines return excellent real-world fuel economy. At 525/1649 litres, some rivals fare slightly better, but few are as nice from the driver’s seat. From £21,725.

Bmw 5-series tourer If load-lugging ability and a premium badge are your requirements, the 5-Series should be on your driveway. A 560/1670-litre load capacity is on offer and the classy cabin gets plenty of standard kit. Refi ned at speed, it also proves great to drive with a superb blend of ride and handling. From £33,065.

ŠkoDa suPerB estate The all-new, third-generation Superb estate went on sale in the summer to critical acclaim. Superb in name and by nature, it’s supremely comfortable, affordable and absolutely cavernous inside. The boot totals 660 litres with the rear seats in their normal place, or 1950 litres with them folded down. From £19,840.

hyuNDai i40 tourer The recently refreshed i40 Tourer is a strong all-rounder that’s good value for money. Passengers will appreciate the interior space and smooth ride but its luggage capacity of 525/1719 litres is where this car really impresses. 10 REASONS TO

Love ’em or hate ’em, Spiders are one of the most important and versatile creatures on our planet. There are around 44,000 different species known to inhabit every ecosystem, climate and continent on earth (except Antarctica). They’re world class hunters adopting thousands of different techniques and tactics to catch prey, from using their silk for lassoing, diving underwater with an air supply, ambushing and good old fashion web building. As your mum always said, “They’re more scared of you, than you are of it”, it” but then *Spider again, Mum doesn’t have a GCSe to her name and a lot of people find research is spiders terrifying! So let’s look at a few facts… inconclusive, most likely not resulting in money.

e of the Spiders are on tants of oldest inhabi . They ’ve our fine planet ely remained larg r about 200 unchanged fo and they do million years uch more this planet m good than us.

**Spider research is fictional. ***100% genuine.

In the winter when spider webs freeze over they look so lovely and beautiful and whimsical and magical. You could totally take a photo and Instagram it and maybe get a few ‘likes’, which we all know is the only way to validate ourselves nowadays.

In England we have it easy. We have a total of zero poisonous (to us) spiders and although every spider can bite there’s very little chance of one doing so. However if you were to be bitten by a spider, its only a matter of time before you start shooting webs out your hands. Fact** Spiders are a gardeners best friend. If you have spiders in your garden, chances are you’re going to have a great harvest this summer.

They’re so cute and wear little water droplet hats – OMG! Did you know a spiders legs are actually fi lled with gas and operate on a hydraulic like system. That’s why a dead spiders legs curl in on themselves. *** 30 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

In Australia they have the aptly named Goliath Bird Eating Spider. Luckily they’re on the other side of the planet along with all the other stuff that kills you!

They eat fl ies. Duh! Just so you understand why this is a good thing, lets break it down. Flies spend most of their time walking on poo and dead pigeons, then they land on your nice egg and watercress sandwich without wiping their feet and proceed to vomit on your food. If only there was an eight legged super insect (technically not an insect) to take care of them!

uB40 MAYHEM! Meets…

INTERVIEW BY DAnieL tiDburY

32 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

The autumn leg of UB40’s ‘Getting Over The Storm’ tour comes to a close at the end of October – by which time the band will have completed ninety UK shows and performed to over 170,000 people since March 2014, making it the biggest UK tour of UB40’s career. We catch up Robin Campbell ahead of their show at Portsmouth Guildhall on 21st October.

ADVertise with us » 023 9229 4408

MAYHEM! Meets… Tell us about the title of your tour, ‘Getting over the Storm’. What’s the meaning behind it? We’ve been through a bit of a storm since Ali walked out, but we’ve come out the other end. The title had a resonance for us, which is why we made it the title track of the album. Previous front man, Ali Campbell, has been promoting his own solo career and touring as ‘UB40’, which has seen a legal fight between the current formation and his own. So, who is the real UB40 and what defines you? Both morally and legally we are the only UB40. When Ali left we continued to record and tour and never stopped, so for him to come back and try to claim the name seven years after he walked out was ludicrous. It was Ali’s choice to leave UB40, he wasn’t pushed. It was very painful, not just for me but for every member of the band – everybody felt like their brother had walked out. When Ali left he knew UB40 would carry on and be successful without him – and he was right. After all, our line-up includes five of UB40’s six founding members, and in Brian, Jimmy and myself you have all of UB40’s principal songwriters. And we’re a reggae band; no other band in the world can replicate the sound of UB40’s rhythm section of earl (bass) and Jimmy (drums). They’re the backbone of UB40’s sound. And for the record, Astro and Mickey (Virtue), two other former members of the band, are not founding members of UB40, despite Ali constantly claiming that they are – and they know it. Astro’s now a backing singer for Ali’s band. he’s not a founding member of that band, either! How have things changed for UB40 since the early days? We’re much more in control of our craft than we were in the early days. I think we’re a better live band now than we’ve ever been. MAYheMMAG |

You’ve been touring since March 2014. It’s been a long time. How do you maintain the energy and keep your performance fresh? I prefer to go home and relax and chill out. When you get home after touring the last thing you want to do is go out, or even go on holidays. My perfect day would be spending my time in the garden, sat in the shade, just enjoying what’s been a pretty good summer. When we’re not playing in the UK we’re often playing tours and festivals in other parts of the world, so with four to five shows a week, every week, there aren’t that many quiet periods. In fact, before we start the fi nal leg of the UK tour we’ll be in the studio recording new material. We get about a month before starting all over again. Who is your audience? Are you finding a new following or is it mainly long term fans? We have thousands of hard-core followers that have been following us everywhere for over 30 years. It’s great to see those faces that you see time and time again over the years, but it always surprises us how many younger people attend our shows these days. When you get teenagers in the front row singing all of your songs it’s fascinating. The even more amazing thing is how they all seem to know lyrics. I have asked our younger fans “how do you know us?” and a lot of the responses that we get are “through social media”. How has your process of creating music and writing changed? It hasn’t really. We create the music together and write the lyrics individually and then put them together, fitting the lyrics to music we’ve made. That process is exactly the same as when we fi rst started. For those who may not be familiar with UB40 – and they’re discovering you now. Can you describe what you do and what you’re about?

We’re the world’s premier reggae band, as it happens! When we started we tried to play Jamaican reggae but it came out different because we had different influences and lived in a different country. What can we expect from your show? It’s always a mixture of a few tracks off our latest album, some old stuff resurrected and, of course, the hits that everyone is expecting to hear. With a greater variety of music styles today, how does reggae fit into the current charts? It’s a cyclical thing. Styles come and go. Reggae is an established part of both world and commercial music, and probably the most influential music of the last forty years. It’s up there with blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s become one of the classic genres and, being the most recent of all of those, it’s probably the most influential on modern day dance music, with drum and bass, jungle and house all informed by reggae. There are bands from twenty, thirty years ago reemerging in the mainstream with new albums, living off their name and repertoire. What makes UB40 different to this? We’ve never stopped recording and performing as UB40 since we released our debut album ‘Signing Off ’ in 1980. We make new albums to keep fresh, or otherwise you become a cabaret act. What can we look forward to from UB40? We’re about to go in the studio to start recording our new album, which we’ll release at some point in 2016. Is there anything else you would like our readers to know? Ali has a habit of repeating things in the press until they become his truth but, no matter how many times he says it, Ali Campbell’s backing band are not and never will be UB40.

CITY BREAKS

Prague

Steeped in history and rich with culture, Prague is definitely the place to visit this winter. While capturing and exploring this beautiful enduring city there are plenty of cosy cafes and dare I say it…Christmas markets to peruse. Take a tour of this fabulous city with Mayhem!

Culture It’s safe to say that Prague has its fair share of cultural hotspots. The liveliest and most popular area is the old town square, a former medieval marketplace where you’ll find the wonderful Astronomical clock and Gothic churches. If you’re a fan of classical music there are regular, free entry, 60-minute concerts within the local churches to keep its legacy ongoing with Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart once embracing the city with their composed symphonies.

seasoNs Late November or December is ideal if you want to indulge far into the Christmas spirit. Twinkling Christmas markets are based around the Old Town and Wenceslas Square selling traditional wooden toys, beautiful and glittering ornaments and the latest must-haves for winter woollies. Take a walk through the town to discover the best winter beverage, hot chocolate to keep you warm.

Natural woNDers WRITTEN BY JuttA LAsner

Antrim, Northern Ireland Legend has it that these basalt columns were erected by an Irish giant who was challenged by a Scottish one, and that he built the causeway all across the Northern channel so the two opponents could meet and lock horns. Scientists believe that this beautiful phenomenon was rather caused by a volcanic eruption about 50 million years ago. Get the audio guide and explore the sight in the evening. There will be less tourists and you’ll get to see the stones in the sunset! For more info, check out nationaltrust.org.uk/giants-causeway.

All adventurers dream of visiting the natural wonders of the world: snorkel with fish around Great Barrier Reef, do the Grand Canyon skywalk or climb Mount Everest! Sadly, those destinations aren’t exactly around the corner. That’s why we at Mayhem! decided to backpack around the UK instead, and discovered few wonders that aren’t so far away.

DaN yr ogoF Swansea, Wales Also known as the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, Dan yr Ogof is a cave system that stretches over eleven miles and is said to be the largest cave complex in europe. It’s one of the most astonishing natural wonders of Great Britain that has many tales to tell. Large parts of the system have not been fully discovered until this day, so it makes for a mysterious and awe-inspiring day out! Find out more at showcaves.co.uk. 42 MAYheM! | autumn 2015

CheDDar gorge Somerset, England This is one of the most spectacular views you’ll ever enjoy in england: at 400 feet deep and three miles long, the gorge started to be formed around one million years ago. There are multiple paths and routes that you can follow to take in the amazing landscape. You may also spot feral goats or ponies along the way! Go to cheddargorge.co.uk to plan your visit.

Orkney, Scotland Way up on the island of hoy on the north coast of Scotland, you will find this curious sight – a 449 feet high stack carved from old red sandstone. An erosion sometime after 1750 created it, and it might not be there for much longer! It will take you a few hours to walk there, but the view will be worth it. Make sure you bring enough water as it can be quite a tiring hike! You can also take a picnic and watch as people climb the Old Man. There you go, explorers! Pack your bags and get going, and remember what Wordsworth said: “Nature never did betray the heart that loved her.” Bon voyage!

Sam Smith has been keeping a very big secret for the past year. But after months of speculation, it’s finally been announced. The Grammy Awardwinning singer/songwriter will sing the theme tune for the new James Bond film ‘Spectre’. The song, recorded in January, is called ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ and was co-written by the 23-yearold and Jimmy Napes, who has previously collaborated with Sam on tracks including ‘Stay With Me’ and ‘Lay Me Down’. The British star says the song took twenty minutes to write, calling it “the quickest song I’ve ever written” and has described it as “a classic love song.” He spoke about his thrill at taking on a Bond theme plus how hard it’s been not being able to speak to anyone about it. He also gave a hint as to what we can expect from the track plus the latest on his new music...

So congratulations Sam, it’s not a secret anymore. You’re singing the new bond theme – how does it feel? I still feel like I can’t speak about it. I was just in the car on the way here and I was talking about the rest of the year and certain things we’re doing with Bond and I still felt like I couldn’t say the word ‘Bond’ but I can now so it’s great. It’s been such a whirlwind year for you with the grammys and the brits and now this? Oh completely. It feels like, ‘when is it going to stop?’ The Bond thing is fantastic. Doing a film I think for any artist, as a singer, as a musician, is interesting and new and different. To be a part of this whole Bond franchise is unreal. I can’t wait for people to hear the song. It must feel great to finally be able to talk about this? It feels amazing. I’ve been keeping this a secret for a year now! So many amazing people have performed bond tunes – how does it feel to be a part of that? It’s even weird just talking about it now. It’s amazing. To be in the list with people like Nancy Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Madonna and Adele and all these people. It’s unbelievable and I genuinely sit and look at the wikipedia page all the time just trying to figure out how I got on this page. It’s amazing and I just hope I do the film justice.

You said it took you just 20 minutes to write? Yeah, the quickest song we’ve ever written. I was actually recording the vocals to ‘Lay Me Down’ on the day that we wrote it. I wasn’t even in for a writing session. Me and Jimmy Napes, who wrote the song together were so hungry to do it – so we did it. Is it a traditional bond song or are you going to bring something new? I think what’s new is the lyric and hopefully me. But you can’t not go traditional with bond, so that’s what we tried to do. It sounds classic and traditional. Sad as always, as I’m a sad person. This song isn’t going to be a big pop song, it’s a bond song and that’s what I want it to be and I hope people are ready for that. Did Adele have any advice? I spoke to Adele after my vocal operation. She gave me some amazing advice about singing but I haven’t spoken to her about bond. I couldn’t tell anyone. When you got that phone call to say they want you for a bond theme tune – you must have told someone? It was my dad and my mum immediately actually. But it didn’t happen just like, ‘we want you to do it so do it.’ They gave me the script to read! I wanted to get the song perfect before I confirmed in my mind that this was actually happening, which I still kind of haven’t done. Turn to continue.

one to one with… So you’ve read the script for ‘Spectre’? Can you give us any hints about it? Yes I’ve read the script but I can’t give you hints. I would genuinely be shot right now if I did. I promise you everything to do with the fi lm is top secret. It’s unreal. There was this whole thing, is Ellie Goulding going to sing the Bond theme? Is it Sam Smith? What did you think about that? I felt really bad and I have to apologise because people took the words all out of my mouth and mixed it all up. I never said that she was doing it, I just heard that people were rumouring that she was doing it, and that Radiohead were and stuff. So when I was asked, ‘who do you think should do it?’ I said, ‘I heard Ellie Goulding is doing it.’ But I never meant to put her in it. She would be great as well. She would 100 per cent be the best person for it so hopefully next time she’ll do it. You’re on the new Disclosure track, but when can we hear more music from you? I’m writing when I want to. So when bad things happen in my life I’m going into the studio and writing about it. Whereas with the fi rst album it wasn’t like that. I was just put in the studio and I was trying to fi nd all the things I wanted to say. I’m excited. It’s not going to be anytime soon. I think people are going to get bored of me if I carry on. I’m just trying to make it the most honest work I’ve ever done. Aren’t you in love at the moment – so why are you still making sad songs? I’m not in love at the moment. I need to be in love. I’m still a bit heartbroken.

What else have you got coming up? Loads of stuff. I don’t really want to give away any surprises but I’ve got loads of things going on towards the end of the year, so I’m just going to have fun and enjoy it. Finally, sum up how it feels to be singing the new bond theme? You want your music to last forever and bond lasts forever so that’s all I can ask for – it’s amazing.
