AIRBNB
IS CHANGING HOLIDAYS
Back in 2008, two American guys were struggling to pay their monthly rent, at which point they had a lightbulb moment. They put up a couple of airbeds in their loft and rented them out to guests. Eight years later Airbnb has taken the world by storm.
WRITTEN BY hannah birkbeck
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? The concept is simple, if you have a room going spare or an even an entire house, these can be rented out at a cost you decide on. As a host you register your accommodation free of charge and add information and images to entice potential travellers. When travellers enquire, hosts sometimes like to know a bit more about who they’re renting their property out to. It gives both sides a chance to get to know each other in an informal way. Many hosts require a deposit to secure the room or property and the final amount is then paid upon arrival. Airbnb make their money by charging both the host and guest. 8

Fun getting Fit!
written by sara niVen
If you’re determined to get fit…
ENJOY EXERCISE BE REALISTIC PLAN AHEAD If you haven’t set foot in the gym for years, aiming to suddenly spend five hours there a week may be hard to keep up! It may be better to commit to three half hour workouts a week or one formal one and just up the amount of activity you do on a daily basis like walking. 14 MayheM! | winter 2016
Check your diary at the start of each week and decide where your fitness routine can be factored in. Vaguely hoping you’ll find the time at some point probably means you won’t! If you can, commit to exercising with a friend who is likely to stick to an agreed plan as an added incentive.
SET YOURSELF DO WHAT A GOAL YOU ENJOY It can be as basic as improving the time it takes to walk/jog a mile, swimming ten laps of the pool without stopping or training for a fun run or half marathon. Getting sponsored for a worthy cause is always a great incentive not to pack it in.
Some people like the sociability of a work out class, for others being able to stick on an exercise DVD or go out for a solitary jog is more up their street. Varying things so you don’t get bored and are working different muscle groups is also a good idea.

BEST ON A BUDGET
written by geMMa hunt
Let’s face it, money matters, and if you’re on a tight budget then you’ll want to get the best possible tablet for your money. Of course it’s possible to hunt around for deals and find a premium tablet at a fraction of the price, but if you want to walk straight into your local retailer and buy your tablet off the shelf then the Nexus 9 is the best tablet on the market for under £200.
TABLETS
IN 2016
Prices for this piece of kit have tumbled over the past couple of months. Generally considered one of the best Android tablets on the market, the Nexus 9 has a high resolution 8.9 inch display screen, and is obscenely fast. With good quality speakers and a minimalist appearance (that isn’t to everyone’s taste) this tablet is simple looking but certainly doesn’t pack the visual punch of some of its peers. In terms of its functionality, you definitely won’t find better for the money. Some reviewers have revealed a few quibbles over the build quality of this tablet, so if you decide to invest in this piece of kit, it’s well worth ensuring you protect its body work. While it’s recommended that every tablet owner ensure their tech is protected with an adequate level of insurance, this is particularly true if you purchase a budget model.
The electronic tablet market is becoming increasingly saturated. Despite a wide range of models already on the market, more tablets than ever are set to be released in 2016.
The launch of the iPad Pro, as well as the release of new Android models from brands such as Samsung and Acer, are being awaited with huge anticipation in the fi rst quarter of the year. With so many options available it can be hard to make up your mind particularly when a new contender or model upgrade is released every couple of months. Choosing a tablet can present a real challenge. But depending on your budget and your specific requirements, Mayhem! is here with a few of the best tablets currently on the market. 16 MayheM! | winter 2016

APPLE’S OFFERING
Think tablet and you many of us think Apple. These giants are the market leader and with new tablets released on a regular basis it can be difficult to decipher the pros and the cons of each newly released model. The iPad Air 2 is considered to be the gold standard of tablets and the model that all other tablets should hold themselves up against. While that makes it one of the most expensive tablets on the market, for your money you are getting the lightest Apple tablet yet (ideal for those on the go). High quality rear and front facing cameras and an improved A8X processor makes the tablet faster than ever before. However if you can’t quite stretch to the Air 2, the good news about its release in 2015 is that it means the original iPad Air is more affordable than it has ever been, and that model is still one of the best models on the market, particularly if you’re not wanting to break the bank. If you’re a tech-obsessive who only wants the latest gear then you may have already bypassed the iPad Air in favour of the iPad Pro. The fi rst version of the iPad pro was released in November 2015 and this is both the largest, the most powerful, and the most expensive iPad yet, with the 128GB version equipped with both WiFi and 4G data connection costing £899.
THE BEST ANDROID Prefer a tablet that uses an android system but still has all the raw functionality of the iPad? the Samsung Galaxy tab S2 9.7in is the very best android tablet model on the market. this tablet provides superior image quality (thanks to its incredibly high pixel density), is only 5.6mm thick and weighs in at just 389g (that’s actually 10 percent lighter than the Apple Air 2).
We can expect to see an updated version of this tablet released at some point this year, but with such positive reviews of the original model, those wanting to be ahead of the game in terms of the tablet they use, this is the perfect model to choose.
Despite its lightweight feel this is a solid and sturdy tablet that looks slick and performs at incredibly high speed. if you’re looking for the best Android tablet model (irrespective of price or value) then you certainly won’t find a better model right now than the Samsung Galaxy tab S2 9.7in. For a new android model on a budget, January 2016 will see the release of the Samsung Galaxy tab e 7.0 which is expected to cost around £160 when it is originally released: with its compact 7 inch screen and upgrade to a faster processor, this new tablet is being keenly anticipated by fans of the Samsung body of work. A FLIPPING-GOOD GUIDE TO
PERFECT PANCAKES
with it Pancake Day brings p but ru sy d lemon, sugar an de the hi to ed are they only us eath? rn de dismal pancake un r ou We all want to show ey flipping skills but th op. So, fl a up d en normally and slightly here are some top, Pancakes’. odd, tips to ‘Perfect
THE MIXTURE The basics needed for a pancake mixture are flour, eggs and milk but too much or too little of these simple ingredients can be disastrous. BBC’s Good Food website suggests 100g flour, two eggs and 300ml milk for eight easy pancakes. But, the Guardian online says a little more flour, a little less milk and one egg for eight perfect pancakes. But, who needs boring, simple ingredients? Why not try peanut butter pancakes? Just add six tablespoons of smooth peanut butter to the mixture and bake on a low heat to give a nutty surprise for dessert. Or for something a little healthier just add either slices of apple or pumpkin to make fruity pancakes. 18 MayheM! | winter 2016
THE FLIP It’s every pancake-makers worst moment – the fl ip! To balance the batter on the edge of the pan and prepare it to somersault through the air can make even the most confident chef shake. And that is the last thing you need when holding a hot frying pan. And speaking of pans, make sure yours is a non-stick or a burnt pancake is on the cards. To get the 180 degree fl ip, edge the batter to the lip of the frying pan and, with good wrist movement, toss it in an upwards, outwards and back movement ensuring it lands flat and on the uncooked side. Or put simply, up and hope for the best.
AND FINALLY... Toppings. Simple lemon and sugar can be nice but why not go all out with the whipped cream and berries and chocolate chips and a tablespoon of golden syrup just for good measure. Honestly, there are no top tips of toppings. This is the one part of the pancake making process that can’t go wrong.

SOCIAL WRITTEN BY craig shelDon
ETIQUETTE
FOR THE MODERN MAN OR WOMAN
Being a socially alert, conscientious modern man or woman can be tricky. The constant effort to go about your day without incident is fraught with pitfalls. Here’s a little guide to help you master the art of social intercourse.
AT THE COFFEE SHOP When waiting in line at a coffee shop, avoid getting to the front of the queue and being asked “what can I get you?” before taking your fi rst look at the menu. Worse still, avoid asking “what drinks do you do?” when the drinks menu is on a large chalk board behind the counter. This may cause a rather time consuming detour to the hospital as fellow customers in urgent need of a caffeine fi x pummel you in front of the pastries. 20 MayheM! | winter 2016
ON THE BUS When travelling on a bus you may observe strange oval shapes covered in hair floating above the head rests in front of you. These are other passengers. Things such as pulling down on the head rest when you get up to leave, playing music without the aid of headphones and discussing at volume how much of an idiot Gary is for cheating on Sarah can cause these passengers to become irritated.
IN THE STREET As wet weather takes hold, many of us will inevitably seek to take an umbrella with us on our travels. These handy accessories are perfect for keeping us dry, making us look more sophisticated and taking people’s eyes out. The more observant of you may notice those sharp little metal spikes that protrude at the edge of your umbrella always seem to be just at eye level. That long line of people squinting in agony behind you as you saunter to work visibly smug at the lack of perspiration on your suit isn’t some bizarre form of street performance, it’s the many pedestrians you’ve just blinded.
AT THE SUPER MARKET Contrary to what some may believe, supermarkets adhere to the same laws of the universe as the rest of space/time. Having a large trolley does not give you permission to ignore the rights of other shoppers. It is commonly known that no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time. So when barrelling down the aisle with a trolley full of sugar induced groceries, do not expect to simply pass through another person in your way. They have as much right to be in the biscuit aisle as you do. Despite only having a basket.

BEN VOLPELIEREPIERROT
BIG COUNTRY Formed in 1981 and with their debut album release two years later The Crossing broke the band massively worldwide with their classic singles Fields Of Fire, Chance and signature song In A Big Country, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over two million copies and driving the record to three prestigious US Grammy nominations. The run of success continued throughout the 80s with the anthemic single Wonderland and the second album Steeltown (1984), which debuted at No 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles East Of Eden, Just a Shadow and Where The Rose Is Sown. In 1985, Big Country appeared at Live Aid in London followed by further successful 24 MayheM! | winter 2016
album releases The Seer’(1986), which included the bands biggest UK hit Look Away. At the start of the 90s ‘Through A Big Country’, featuring all the bands classic hits was released, followed by the fi ft h studio album No Place Like Home (1991) taking the band’s total record sales to well over five million copies. Further studio albums Buffalo Skinners (1993) and Why The Long Face (1995) followed, which saw Big Country landing the special guest slot on the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge european tour. In August 1998 they were once again invited to open for the Rolling Stones on their Bridges To Babylon tour of europe prompting Mick Jagger to say that Big Country were “one of the best opening bands we ever had”.
Curiosity Killed The Cat instantly became one of the hottest and most popular bands of the late eighties after forming in 1986. While gaining a large teen following, Curiosity Killed The Cat’s appeal was far wider, their cool, funky, distinctive music being a very long way from typical teen fodder. Curiosity Killed The Cat’s many hit singles include Down to Earth, which peaked at number two in the charts and sold 1.5 million worldwide, Misfit, Ordinary Day, Hang On In There Baby and Name and Number, which later went on to be a hit single for De La Soul. Curiosity Killed The Cat’s debut album Keep Your Distance went straight in to the UK album charts at number one, selling over 1.5 million copies while Curiosity’s second album, Get Ahead, also made the top ten. In addition, Curiosity Killed The Cat were well respected within the music industry and won a BRITS nomination for the Best New Act of 1987 as well as winning the Music Therapy Best New Act award.

rolling back the years
MIDGE URE Recipient of many awards that include Ivor Novello and Grammy awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records, Midge Ure needs very little introduction. Musical success is seldom measured in time spans of more than a few years, so the fact that by the time Midge’s single If I Was went to No 1 in 1985 he had already crammed several musical lifetimes into a 10 year professional career speaks volumes – Slik, The Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy, Visage, Ultravox and of course the most famous one off group in musical history Band Aid had by then all had the guiding
hand of his musical navigation. Ultravox was a major influence on the new romantic and electro-pop movements of the early ’80s. Their successful trademark was combining Midge’s powerful guitar riffs with sweeping synthesiser motifs, enigmatic imagery and state-of-the-art visuals. Tracks like Reap the Wild Wind, Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, Love’s Great Adventure, All Stood Still, The Voice, Hymn, The Thin Wall and 1981’s timeless Vienna were all massive hits the world over as they charted with awesome regularity, not only on single, but with seven consecutive top ten albums in just six years.
MIDGE URE
NICK HEYWARD
NICK HEYWARD His music career began when he formed Haircut 100 in 1981. The band had four UK Top 10 singles – Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) (No 4), Fantastic Day (No 9), Love Plus One (No 3) and Nobody’s Fool (No 9) and turned Nick into a major pop pin up! Their debut album, Pelican West, reached No 1 in the UK MAyHeMMAG |

THE BEST COMEBACK EVER Adele is taking over the world right now with her long-awaited new album 25. In this compilation she talks about her latest music, fame, motherhood, body image and more... written by Jenny DaVis
Adele has been storming the charts worldwide with her latest album. The British singer/songwriter’s long-awaited follow-up to 21 – which features the hit single Hello – has been breaking records for music sales on both sides of the Atlantic. In its first week of release 25 sold over three million copies in America, a record in US history. The album sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release in the UK – the highest ever figure for a single UK chart week. Meanwhile, tickets for Adele’s 2016 tour dates announced so far have sold out in minutes. It’s an incredible comeback for the Someone Like You singer, who took time off after the success of her last album to focus on her family. Adele has admitted that she found writing 25 to be quite challenging because she was in such a great headspace it was hard to find inspiration to draw from. She needn’t have worried. It looks set to become one of the biggest, if not the biggestselling albums of all time. On her comeback single Hello… Hello is just about reconnecting with everyone else and myself. I couldn’t get over my guilt of leaving my kid to MAyHeMMAG |
go and write a record and stuff like that. So it’s getting over that – getting on the other side of that. It was just, you know, in general, hello to everyone. On breaking the internet with Hello… I did a Kim Kardashian. Thank god it wasn’t with my ass. It would’ve actually broke the internet if it was my bum. On her album 25… I think the album is about trying to clear out the past. Becoming a parent and moving past my mid-twenties, I simply don’t have the capacity to worry about as many things that I used to really enjoy worrying about. Life is so much easier when you don’t hoard your past. On why the new album took so long… Obviously, I took a bit of time off because I became a mum. Then when I thought I was ready to start writing I wasn’t. So I took some more time off. And then I was ready. So a couple of times I thought I’d dried up. On the pressure she felt after the success of 21… Because of my last album, because of what it went on to do, it was kind of a write-off to ever expect anything with this album, the new one, like that. So actually it made it a bit easier. On the titles of her albums… I think this will be my last age one.
I feel like the idea of naming albums after my age is always to show a photograph of what’s going on in my life at that time. I feel like not that much is going to change profoundly in me from now on, in terms of how important years of my life are to myself. On being the queen of heartbreak… Heartbreak can definitely give you a deeper sensibility for writing songs. I drew on a lot of heartbreak when I was writing my first album, I didn’t mean to but I just did. On fame… When I walk into a room full of people that I don’t know, they stop talking. And I understand that. I get it. Because I’ve done it myself in the past. On being a star around the world… I’m very British. I don’t think you can really get more British than me! On awards ceremonies… I hate the red carpet. I don’t feel insecure, I just feel like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to do this’. I literally get a stomach cramp. On her classy style… I just wear what I like, what I like rather than what’s on trend or what other people say to wear. I like to feel comfortable otherwise if I don’t, I freak out a little bit. And just classic really, for my figure and stuff like that.

one to one On body image… I do have body image problems, for sure, but I don’t let them rule my life at all. And there’s bigger issues going on in the world than how I feel about myself and stuff like that. On self doubt… There was quite a long period where I didn’t believe in myself.
haven’t broken up. We’ve never broken up. We’ve been together. We just haven’t felt the need to get married. We’ve got a kid together. I feel like that’s a big enough commitment. On motherhood… There’s a lyric in one of my songs which is about becoming a mum, which was ‘I fi nd it funny that you’re the only one I never looked for’
On juggling her career and motherhood… My son comes everywhere with me. He’s the fi rst person I see in the morning and last person I see at night. I make time for him, like I always have. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been away [from the music industry] for so long. My kid is more important. My kid comes fi rst; my music comes second. On whether her son likes her songs… He likes Twinkle Twinkle, Row, Row, Row Your Boat, Batman, stuff like that. He’s not interested in what I do. He knows I’m a singer and he loves it, and he’s proud. He knows that it’s going well. But, yeah, he’s not – he wouldn’t buy my record if he could. On getting older… I’m sort of in that weird limbo state where you’re deciding, what is the next chapter of my life? That’s what all my friends and me are going through: We’re having that early-life crisis you have at around 25, looking at 30. We know we have to enter adulthood, but we’re all a bit frightened and sad about it. On her fears… I’m ballsy. I have guts. I’m not afraid of anyone. The only person I’m afraid of is myself.
On suffering with stage fright… I get so nervous with live performances that I’m too frightened to try anything new. It’s actually getting worse. Or it’s just not getting better, so I feel like it’s getting worse, because it should’ve gotten better by now. On her relationship with her boyfriend… I have said a million times I’m not married and everyone still says we are. But, yeah, we’re still together. We 28 MayheM! | winter 2016
because I was always yearning for something and I never knew what it was and then I got pregnant and he makes me realise everything about myself, that I like and don’t like. On how becoming a mum has changed her... I haven’t got time to fall apart. I’m the backbone for my kid, and I want to be there for him. And I want to be there for my boyfriend as well, and I don’t want to bring them down with me for my art.
On her advice to young artists… Don’t believe the hype. Don’t read any press. Just do it for the reason you started and not because of what everyone’s saying. I read a lot of [my] press, and it makes you hate yourself a bit. (Laughs) So I’d say do the work and make the music how you did before anyone cared. On happiness… I’ve never been happier and I’ve never been healthier. So I’m good.

VINYL
At the end 2015 Art Vinyl launched ‘Best Art Vinyl 2015’, in search of the most creatively designed record cover of the year, joining an archive of stunning designs from the past decade. A diverse shortlist of 49 striking record covers, including Dave Gilmour Rattle that Lock, Linden Rest and Be Thankful, Squeeze Cradle to the Grave, Left field Alternative Light Source and Kendrick Lamar To Pimp A Butterfly were nominated for the award and we the public were invited to vote for our favourites. To mark its 10th year, the Best Art Vinyl 2015 nominations were chosen by a panel of highly respected music industry design experts and previous winners, creating an experts’ eye collection of sleeve art. Last year over 16,000 of us voted with the winning place going to Dan Hillier’s Falls for Brighton Rock Duo, Royal Blood’s eponymous album. Founder, Andrew Heeps explains; “While the vinyl revival has quietly gained momentum, Art Vinyl has become the home and archivist for contemporary sleeve design, achieving our mission to document the art of this amazing music format right up to the present date. I founded Art Vinyl back in 2004 as I believed that a new generation would still appreciate this format and the added artistic value from the sleeve designs. That generation has now famously been labelled ‘Hipsters’ but at the end of the day it is the original vinyl record designs that shine, this annual celebration however is most certainly both genreless and ageless.

AND THE
WINNER IS… Covering a complete range of creative disciplines, including traditional fine art, photography, sculpture and computer graphics, the winners display a diverse mix of techniques with strikingly beautiful photographic and digitally enhanced designs. David Gilmour’s Rattle That Lock album taking first place, Drenge’s Undertow coming second, and Tame Impala’s Currents in third place. The concept and production for David Gilmour’s cover was created by The Creative Corporation, art directed by Dave Stansbie in collaboration with Aubrey Powell from the legendary Hipgnosis design studio, who produced album covers for the likes of Pink Floyd, Led zeppelin and T Rex during the 60s, 70s and 80s. This is the fi rst year such an established artist’s record has won Best Art Vinyl, but notably the design team have historically been responsible for so many iconic sleeve designs and their talent and creativity to match the musicians’ wishes clearly shone through.
2ND
PLACE Drenge Undertow
1ST PLACE Dave Gilmour Rattle That Lock
It’s interesting that two of the top three are conceptual compositions, using photography as the core of the design and all three use digital design skills to great effect, showing that designers are using all tools available to them throughout the creative process. 32 MayheM! | winter 2016

Since his debut #1 album, Hand Built By Robots in 2007, featuring the hit single Dream Catch Me, Newton Faulkner has released three further Top 10 selling albums, including the #1 Write It On Your Skin. Newton is now back on tour performing tracks from his latest album, Human Love. We catch up ahead of his show at the Portsmouth Pyramids on 21st April to find our more. interview by Daniel tiDbury
“I took this opportunity to do whatever the hell I wanted” Tell us about the title of your album … The title is Human Love; it’s the name of the last song on the album. The main reason I liked it as an album name is the massively different and opposing ways people interpret its meaning. Some people find the word human inherently negative; others the word love [maybe the recently dumped]; others find it a purely positive name and it’s exactly what world need rights now. What inspired the lyrics? everything; I try not to rule out any avenues of potential inspiration. This one is deceptively dark lyrically. Change comes up a lot, in all its forms, good, bad, impending, needed. There’s no definite story, it’s not a concept album. Your last album was created live and streamed online for people to watch. How did that process affect the way you recorded Human Love? The main thing I learned from streaming the making of it entirely live was not to stream the making of another album entirely live. No, it MAyHeMMAG |
really was fun; the streaming aspect was fascinating, getting feedback on tracks as you record them was awesome. I would do it again, but maybe for an eP. Human Love and Studio Zoo are almost polar opposites. How did you develop the sound of this new album? In the past I’d always been conscious of what kind of artist I was perceived to be, not just by the public, but by the label releasing it. Having changed label at the beginning of last year I took this opportunity to do whatever the hell I wanted, which was very nice. As usual the album features a cover track; how do you choose which songs and artists to cover? I do a huge amount of covers live … everything from Bohemian Rhapsody to the Baywatch theme tune. I usually start with the question “What shouldn’t you cover?” Bohemian Rhapsody was the answer to the question, “What would be physically impossible to cover?” Get Free was the answer to “What would people not expect me to cover?”
There is a sense of a new chapter in your musical career being started with Human Love. What are your thoughts about that? yeah, as I mentioned, it’s a new label. I’ve got a live band. There’s definitely been a massive development in the sound, live and production-wise. You’ve worked with a variety of producers in creating this music. How does working with different people affect the way you work personally? The main reason I like working with a variety of people is that I learn something from every single one, whether it’s as a writer, a producer, an engineer. What did you learn from those you collaborated with on this album? We were really lucky on this album to work with some amazing people, everyone from empire of the Sun to Dutch artist Tessa Rose Jackson. Much in the same way as working with different producers, working with different artists opens new musical ideas as a singer, as a guitarist.

“music transcends any language barriers so grooves and melodies, if they are good, translate into any culture”
Does working with a variety of different collaborators make it difficult to pull together the tracks as one piece of work? No. I think I’m sure enough of my own musical identity and how I want things to sound, that even when there are lots of people involved there is a solid chain of thought running through the whole process. Who’s on your music radar right now? Laura Mvula and Auary are both doing amazing things right now. I discovered a lot of world music researching for this album, the main highlight of which being the Chinese band Hanggai. Check out the track Flowers if you get a moment. What can we expect from your latest show? It’s bigger, it’s louder. There is a much larger dynamic range adding the new material to the work of the previous albums. We wrote it for festivals, it’s really fun. What are you most looking forward to while on tour? I think the main thing I’m looking forward to is playing the new material now that people have had the chance to hear it. There’s a huge difference in playing people songs they know, compared to what they don’t know. 36 MayheM! | winter 2016
You said once that you would prefer for your albums to stand the test of time than to make number one. So how do you promote the discovery of your older music to new listeners? Just by releasing more music and hoping when people buy the new stuff they’ll go back and check out the old stuff. Following the hair cut, which you must be fed up talking about, how much thought and time do you dedicate to your physical/sartorial style? Considerably more than I used to, to be honest. It was never at top of my priorities but after ten years of looking almost identical, I fi gured it was time to step up my physical and sartorial game. When at college you would practice techniques and melodies in your head while going to sleep. You said it felt like cheating. How do you go about developing skills and new music today? I still practice in my head, I’ve always written guitar parts I can’t actually play so in order to play them I have to put the time in and get better. With tribal beats running throughout the album, how do you think the native people of Africa and Asia would respond of your music? I would hope that they would like it.
When writing this album we took influences from all over the place but one of the main aims was for it to translate live. We thought, if I heard this in this distance at a festival, would it make us want to go and investigate? Music transcends any language barriers so grooves and melodies, if they are good, translate into any culture. Touring is presumably a welcome break from writing and working in the studio, but what do you do to get away from music all together when you get a chance? Computer games, movies, books, exercise, but I tend to do music pretty much all the time. I listen to new stuff while exercising, and play guitar or piano while watching movies. So it’s very rare that I actually stop. What is the hardest part in the music making process for you? Lyrics, I spend more time on that, than anything else. I take what I put out into the world quite seriously, sometimes too seriously. We’re looking forward to seeing you in Portsmouth, is there anything you would like our readers to know? I’m really looking forward to playing, it’s going to be hard not to have a good time.

DO WE DEPEND TOO MUCH ON ELECTRONIC DEVICES? Recent reports say that all 11-year-olds must know their 12 times tables before leaving school. Technology has been blamed for proving too many cheats and discouraging brain power. Mayhem! explores if we depend too much on electronic devices or if they’re secretly the best thing ever. 38 MayheM! | winter 2016
Are you able to do quick arithmetic without using your calculator? Are you able to tell me the time without glancing at your phone? Are you able to remember your next appointment without looking at your calendar? Are you able to keep in contact with friends and family without using instant messages? Technology has become an essential accessory in our everyday lives, we don’t even think twice before using it. We use mobile phones for everything from inputting birthdays and important events to keeping records of credit card numbers and passwords. We’re able to keep in contact with friends without actually having to leave our homes. Tablets,
phones, gaming devices and computers can all be used for surfi ng the internet. It allows us to fi nish tasks at work without actually being there, entertain ourselves with home movies or educate ourselves. When was the last time you headed to a library to fi nd a book rather than typing your questions into Google? It’s not surprising that today’s young people are becoming more tech savvy rather than learning. But hasn’t technology made everything just that little bit easier? If it wasn’t for never ending developments of technology for our devices then we would never be able to check our bank balances, transfer money or pay bills from just one

And most importantly, we would never be able to keep important information, dates, meetings, numbers, daily notes and to-do lists and instead end up with endless amounts of paper screwed up in the bottom of our bags. Being honest yes we depend too much on electronic devices but where would we be today if it wasn’t there? Just think how much technology has helped with modern day medicines, solutions for schools education and developments in order to make things better and easier. Ultimately technology has become a bitter sweet invention that has made our lives easier and convenient, however it has made us become socially unhinged as we’d rather message friends that live around the corner and most importantly, it’s made generations stop using, testing and expanding their knowledge. YOUR FACE!
You look at it in the mirror every day – sometimes quite often. Our face is what we present to the world on a daily basis and the way we look is, more often than not, how we’re judged by those around us.

what your Face says about your health
So, what does your face say about you? More than you might think. Changes in your facial appearance, even little subtle ones, can be an early indicator that all may not be as it should be with regard to your overall health. Mayhem! takes a closer look at all things facial...
HAIR It’s considered ‘normal’ to lose about 100 hairs a day – typically the amount you might find left over on your hairbrush or in the plughole. If you seem to be losing more, it might be worth checking out possible reasons. Some medications can cause hair loss, such as the hormone Progesterone which is found in some forms of birth control as well as some Vitamin A derivatives.
EYES First and foremost, you should be having your eyes examined every two years – and not just to see if you need glasses, a simple examination tells the optometrist far more than that. They can help detect the early signs of glaucoma as well as cataracts and macular degeneration – or even suggest other issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
NOSE Nose symptoms vary a lot and depend on what an underlying condition might be. Typical nose symptoms include it being dry/itchy; a nasal discharge (which could be clear, yellow, MAyHeMMAG |

white, green or speckled with blood); repeated sneezing; sores/pustules (no, this isn’t nice, but read on!) at the base of nasal hairs or the loss of your sense of smell. Unexplained or unexpected symptoms which originate in or around your nose which don’t vanish quickly or respond to treatment are always worth checking out.
LIPS Cold sore anyone? yep, nasty little buggers aren’t they. Those vicious little white spots which flare up on the lips are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and usually clear up without treatment within seven–10 days. There are two types of Herpes Simplex virus; HSV-1, which is usually responsible for the ‘standard’ cold sore and HSV-2, which can occur as a result of having oral sex with someone who has genital herpes. Not nice for them and certainly not so for you as a result. No kissing for a while for starters! If you have an outbreak of them on your lips and they just don’t want to clear up, even if you have been treating them, get it looked at. winter 2016 | MayheM!

A GUIDE TO
WORK EXPERIENCE Whether you’re a student, graduate or unemployed school leaver, many of you will be hoping to boost your CV’s with the holy grail that is work experience. Play your cards right, and you could land yourself a job. Make a wrong step and you’ll be blacklisted, doomed to never work in this town again. OK, a little melodramatic but you get the idea.
IMPRESSION TEA TIME
ENTHUSIASM When applying for a coveted work experience spot it’s important to choose your words carefully. Don’t waste precious type space telling them what should already be a given. Instead focus on what aspects you love about the industry and what you believe you can bring to the role. Try to get your personality on the page. Making them laugh while reading will endear you to them tremendously. 44 MayheM! | winter 2016
INITIATIVE Go the extra mile. Show them you want to be there, excited to get stuck in and be a team player. Don’t waste your time doing menial tasks that won’t benefit anyone. Making a few extra copies of a something for the whole room can be useful and show initiative. Bleaching everyone’s mug after every use is a bit extreme. Pick your battles.
It’s an unwritten rule that anyone on work experience is expected to get all the ‘norms’ tea and coffee whenever asked. you’re essentially a runner. It’s a rite of passage and more often than not it’s because no one can think of anything else for you to do. It is however a great opportunity to introduce yourself to everyone. A simple “Can I get you a coffee?” is the perfect way to approach a worker you’re unfamiliar with.
Now, when I say make an impression, I don’t mean accidently set fire to the entire office or use someone’s computer to send a document and inadvertently end up deleting all of their files. Make yourself heard. Don’t shy away in the corner, slipping out the door come five without so much as a goodbye. Go out of your way to talk to people, even if you’re intimidated. When they’re deciding on who to invite back they won’t think to offer the job to someone they can’t remember.

April 16th 2016 Imagine this, you’d certainly get an extra half hour or so under in the sheets. you could just roll out of bed and straight into the office, no faffing around with ironing shirts or finding a pair of tights without holes.
July 10th It’s summer so why not have a cocktail to celebrate? The blend of classic coconut and sweet pineapple, with a light hint of rum, makes the Piña Colada the perfect palette cleanser.
NATIONAL NAPPING DAY LEI DAY
WORLD SISTERS DAY

May 1st 2016 Let your inner Hawaiian babe out and don the flowery accessories. Whether it’s a rainy day in May or we’re graced with blistering hot tropics, pretend you’re on a beach and celebrate world Lei Day.
August 7th 2016 While appreciation should be shown for sisters all year round, use this one day in particular to spoil or be spoiled. It falls on a Sunday, so why not have a celebratory lunch or picnic on this summers day.
February 11th 2016 Step out of your comfort zones and be extra nice to strangers. On this day, go out of your way to meet someone new and expand your friendship circle.

It’s quite likely that you know someone who has suffered from an eating disorder. What’s more probable is that you didn’t know that they are experiencing it, as those who have the condition are likely to keep it under wraps, a secret they’d rather not share with anyone – even you.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (22nd–28th February) aims to bring the condition and awareness of it to a wider public audience, including illustrating how it affects the lives of those in the UK who have been diagnosed with it. WHAT CAUSES AN EATING DISORDER? Precise causes are currently not fully understood, however, contemporary evidence suggests that it may be linked to other medical conditions. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young girls has been linked with eating disorders as has Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is also the relentless peer pressure and portrayal of idealised body types as illustrated in media.
SO WHAT’S NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS WEEK ALL ABOUT? Its ultimate aim is to prevent eating disorders and negative body issues while removing the stigma that surrounds them. It is critical to remember that these are not ‘fads’ or choices but potentially life threatening illnesses – hence the importance of prominence and the need to recognise pressures, attitudes and behaviours that shape the disorder. This year’s NeD Awareness Week theme is ‘everybody Knows Somebody’. For more information and to find out how you can get involved, visit www.nationaleatingdisorders.org. If you think this condition is affecting your life or that of a friend or family member, always consult a qualified health professional.
