Owning a property is a commitment to consider, but it saves you money in the long run, so here are our tips to make sure you feel right at home. bORROWiNG bUSiNeSS A mortgage broker is the fi rst person to call as they can search the market for the best deals but don’t stretch to the limits of your budget as additional one-off expenses are waiting round the corner. Deposits, valuations, legal fees, land register, estate agents commission and insurance premiums are all necessary and can cost anywhere between £2,000 to £5,000, so do the maths! 8

Make a list of all the criteria you fancy in your home and be realistic. You may not get a pool but you’ll be swimming in disposable income. Before asking to view a property there are two things to check before going the distance. Is it freehold which means you’ll own the full property, or lease specific? And is it registered or unregistered by the state? It may take some time to get it right but remember it’s a marathon and not a sprint.

Once you’ve found the perfect property for you and done all the research, don’t let it go! Make a move because it’s a changing market out there and chances are that others are circling in too. Start by offering less than the asking price as owners will expect this and will often take an offer. Begin low and negotiate through your agent, but make sure it’s all done legally and not with the shake of a hand – handshakes are not legally binding!

As soon as you’ve come to an agreement that suits both parties call a broker or lender to sort out your mortgage application. Think about fluctuations in interest rates before you sign on the dotted line as this catches a lot of first time buyers off guard. To seal the deal ask your solicitor to write up a contract and when signed the seller’s deeds will be handed over. All that’s left to do is celebrate your new home with a bottle of bubbly!

Perhaps start with a spot of bicycle touring (finding a place and exploring it by bike at leisure) to break yourself in gently before going on to the serious stuff ! Both field and ice hockey seemingly continue to slip under the radar when it comes to sporting matters, but the Great Britain women’s field team won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games!

Andy Murray’s continuing struggle with his nationality (ever noticed he’s British when he wins something and a useless Jock when he doesn’t?) aside, you could opt for a game of squash. The British Baseball Federation was founded in 1987 and now oversees a Great British national side as well as club leagues at all ages and abilities from youth to adults. The game was introduced here in 1890 by Francis Ley of Derbyshire, who had come across it on a visit to the States. Perhaps it’ll be no surprise then to learn that one of the first proper clubs in the country was the Derby County Baseball Club, whose home ground was later also used by Derby County FC from 1895–1997. Team made up eyes with more subtle lips to avoid both ﬁghting for attention. A neutral gloss is the best bet although bright red lips with a bold slick of eyeliner are a classic retro combination. Don’t attempt to try a new look with a bright or smoky eyeshadow if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to blend carefully. If every second counts, sweep a neutral eyeshadow over the whole eye socket area up to your brows and use an eyeliner for added emphasis instead. Eyeshadow can double up as a liner to save on cash. theatre with a difference How would you describe what the Reduced Shakespeare Company does to anyone who’s never seen a performance of yours before? We take big weighty subjects and reduce them down to small easily digestible bite-size pieces of hilarity. It must have taken ages to put together an abridged version of the Bible! What inspired the decision to have a go at tackling it? Growing up, the Bible played a part in all of our lives in one way or another. Every night we ask the audience who among them has ever read the Bible cover to cover, and in an audience of several hundred, only a handful of people will raise their hand. So, really, we feel we are providing a public service.

into an hour and a half and moving from street theatre to proper venues with paying audiences. The Bible was just an obvious next step on our path of reduction. How does this show compare to The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare, The Complete History Of America and The Complete World Of Sports? The subject matter changes, but the style for all of them is very “Reduced”. We may act like idiots up there on stage, but we are well-versed on the topic at hand. You once had more West End shows running than Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Have you ever thought of turning your comedic gaze towards his work? We only reduce things we love.

What would you say to anyone who objects to you treating the ‘word of God’ in such a way? In what way? Fun? Exciting? Enthusiastic? I’m afraid we can’t be held responsible for the humour-impaired.

With so many issues/topics ripe for re-interpretation, how do you decide which to work with in the process of writing shows? We ask one simple question. Does it make us laugh?

Have you met any real opposition from people of faith? Just browse the web for stories on the “kerfuffles” of Northern Ireland. The only people we’ve encountered so far that question our motives or morals are people who haven’t actually seen the show. We may be “wacky, zany, and a little profaney”, but it all comes from a place of love.

How does performing on stage differ from radio comedy, and if offered the chance to make a more permanent move into radio or television would you take the leap? We’ve performed in every medium available and enjoy the challenge of them all. However, the audience is our 4th member, and we love talking directly to them and even bringing them on stage for special scenes.

Do you see yourselves as the punk rockers of comedy, reducing quite weighty subjects into shorter pieces of work? I think we’re closer to pop rockers; more hair spray than substance.

When did the three of you first meet and decide to perform together? We were all released from prison within a week of each other, so it was fate really.

You’ve been working together since 1981, can you tell us a bit about your early days? It started with a “pass the hat” routine at Renaissance Fairs in America. Short versions of Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet turned into a full show cramming all 37 of the Bard’s plays

Have you always been interested in topical comedy? Of course. The more people are familiar with the subject matter, the more they can relate to the jokes. Although, we don’t mind going past the topical and going straight to the bone when necessary.

Did you actually read the Bible as a whole before deciding to perform it in your own way? We read the Children’s Illustrated Bible. It has everything. Even ponies and cotton candy. How did you decide what to include and leave out? OK, honestly, we cheat. We remove all the boring bits and go straight to the sex and violence of which there is plenty! Are any of you actually religious in any sense? Within the company, there are a multitude of faiths. We have a Catholic, a Baptist, and even a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Would you consider performing the work inside a church or other place of worship if asked? Absolutely. We have played many churches. Several on this tour alone. Who is the inspiration behind your brand of comedy? Marx Brothers, 3 Stooges, Monty Python, George Bush. With the ‘other RSC’ (Royal Shakespeare Company) also operating in theatreland, would you be open to a collaboration? Our lawyer has advised us not to comment on that until the lawsuit is settled and restraining order removed. What’s next for the Reduced Shakespeare Company? Our new show “The Complete History of Comedy (abridged)” has just enjoyed a successful debut in America. We hope to bring it to the good people of Britain very soon.

ThAT All SOUNDS A biT iNVOlVeD! Well you don’t have to do all of that you know! Most Mums will admit that the most special thing for them would be just to be remembered and appreciated on that day, and, if it does mean that hastily purchased box of chocolates, then they’ll know that it is, above all, the thought that counts.

iS iT YeT ANOTheR ‘AMeRiCANiSM’? Not at all! In British days of yore, and we’re talking the 16th Century here, the traditional fast during

Lent was ‘suspended’ on Mothering Sunday so that a light fruit cake called a Simnel could be eaten by a Mother and her family.

iT’S NOT JUST COMMeRCiAl NONSeNSe TheN? Nope. Like Valentine’s Day, it’s now a major day of celebration and relevant tat will be everywhere as the day itself approaches. But the day and its meaning is as old as the proverbial hills and, with 365 days warning every year – there’s no reason to forget. Besides, why should you? If it wasn’t for her, you wouldn’t be reading this!

Mothering Sunday is held on the fourth Sunday of lent – or exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. This means it always falls at around the same time of year, from around mid-March to mid-April.

hOW iS iT CelebRATeD? For most it’s the opportunity to rush out of the door at 7:30am on that morning to join the panicked rush for the last of the cards as well as a box of chocolates. Others may commemorate the day by cooking breakfast and serving it to Mum as she has a lie-in – thus risking spoiling her day by giving her a dose of botulism. Or, if you’re a seasoned Mothering Sunday pro, by accompanying her to a special church service, ideally one held at the church where her children were christened. 16 MayheM! | SPRING 2014

Not only will they be truly organic and nurtured by your own fair hand, there is, believe me, nothing quite like harvesting your fi rst crop of new potatoes in May and tasting them. You’ll notice the difference in quality straight away and you can grow them in specially designed pots or sacks.

GARDeNiNG? i’M NOT ReTiReD YeT! Think again. A pursuit that was long thought to be the exclusive reserve of the grey haired and genteel generation has never been more popular amongst younger people. Capel Manor College in Enfield recently reported a 25% increase in demand from 16–18 year olds for courses in Horticulture while the Askham Bryan College in York announced that the percentage of its students studying Horticulture had grown from 20% to 80% in only five years.

i’Ve AlReADY GOT A JOb! That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy gardening as a relaxing hobby. It’s a massive growth industry in the UK at the moment: the RHS reckon there are nearly 19 million active gardeners in the country spending around £2,000 million a year on plants and gardening products.

AND FRUiT? So many fruits are easy to grow and harvest. Tomatoes need virtually no help at all, just a little water now and again. Strawberries and raspberries can be easily grown as well and will always provide fruit. If you’ve time on your hands and the room, you can even have your own vine and grow some grapes!

So much travelling to do, so little time. So how about cherry picking jokes. And that’s a shame because Bruges is one of the loveliest travel destinations on some of the best destinations and heading for them the continent. bARCelONA One word best describes Barcelona: cool. It never stands still; a city that is always changing, evolving and reinventing itself. Some of the world’s most iconic buildings are here such as Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, a building that redefi nes the word spectacular. Work on it began in 1882 and continues to this day, a building which once seen is never forgotten. A hAiRY eXPeRieNCe blONDe AMbiTiON iT’S beST TO TeST Unless you’re planning a really drastic change, always check out the colour guides on the back of packs. They’re a great indicator of the fi nal result before taking the plunge. Try a wash-in wash-out pack fi rst to see if the colour suits you appropriately. Remember, once permanent dye is on, there is no going back. Ask around! People who are confident at self-dyeing can give you tons of tips and advice.

Every shop bought pack will advise you to do a skin sensitivity test at least 24 hours before you dye your hair. This really is important especially if you suffer from allergies such as eczema or dermatitis. Why not also try a tiny spot underneath your hair to see what the colour will look like once set. Dyeing your hair by yourself can be tricky, so even if you’re prepared to colour on your own, get somebody to give it a once over when you’re finished to ensure even coverage.

eGGCelleNT OMeleTTeS Eggs are so versatile, as long as you have a couple in the fridge you can poach, scramble, fry or boil them for use in many meals. Omelettes are always a favourite way of using all the ingredients in the fridge. For the ultimate hangover meal fry chopped mushrooms, basil, bacon and olive oil in a pan until golden. Add to a greased cup, stirring in the cheese, and break 2 fresh eggs whole on top and place in oven for 10 minutes at 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. UlTiMATe hANGOVeR bACON bUTTY For the best in post pub grub, you need good quality bacon, preferably smoked, a very hot griddle pan, butter and a couple of spoons of brown sugar. The sugar will caramelise and give the bacon that awesome crispy American flavour. The bread for the sandwich should then be cooked in the pan, soaking up the lovely juices and ensuring the sandwich isn’t soggy. Finish off with rocket, beef tomatoes, cheese (brie works a treat), salt, pepper and your favourite sauce!

bReAD ‘N’ bliNGeD UP PUDDiNG For a great twist on the old bread and butter pudding classic, forget calorie counting and instead substitute normal bread for croissants, brioche, or even left over Christmas pudding and milk for double cream or white chocolate for the ultimate blinged up desert. The joy with this dish is it doesn’t matter how stale the bread, or what extra ingredients you add, as long as you have enough eggs (6 egg yolks and 3 whole eggs) which are then mixed with sugar, chocolate and cream and then poured over the bread in an oven dish and baked in the oven for 20–25 minutes at 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4. Serve with custard or ice cream.

belliSiMO bANANA FRiTTeRS & CARAMel SAUCe For the perfect way to use up the last few bananas sat in the fruit bowl, try this easy recipe for a desert or a midnight feast. To make the sauce; melt butter, brown sugar and double cream in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer. Sift 125g of self-raising flour, adding one egg and cold soda water (190ml), stir until the batter is lump free. Heat the oil in a hot pan and then simply dip the bananas in batter and gently lower into the oil. Cook for 2 minutes until golden. Drain and serve immediately with the caramel sauce. Warning, this is seriously addictive!

SlOW AND STeADY Despite being cost free, you should defi nitely consider investing in a good quality pair of running shoes. Visit your local sports shop, try some on and get professional advice. If you have any injuries or health issues, visit your GP to get medical advice on training. If you’re just a bit out of shape or inactive, start with walks and slowly progress to power walking, jogging and eventually running. It’s best to start off gently and regularly with some short distances twice a week rather than a long route one week and nothing the next.

RUNNiNG AheAD It’s easy to fi nd excuses like bad weather so staying motivated can be difficult. Why not start running with a friend? Or join your local running club? Keeping a diary will help you to stay focused and using a pedometer can help motivation by seeing how far you’ve managed and how many calories you’ve burnt. Find some inspirational music to help you stay in an up-beat mood. Set some goals, and monitor your progress.

WAlKiNG WONGA Once you feel fit, you could always try entering a local charity event. Not only will you be putting all your training to the test, but you’ll also help to raise money for a good cause. Running the same courses can be tedious, but by running in an event you’ll enjoy a new route and maybe even make some new running friends along the way!

DON’T FORGeT Always warm up and cool down before and after your run to avoid cramps and injuries. Plan your route before you go and tell somebody where you’re headed. If choose to run in the dark, stay on illuminated main roads and invest in some high visibility clothing. Most importantly, have fun!

a chat with… How did you acquire the nickname ‘The Reverend’, and what inspired the formation of ‘The Makers’? Well I kinda had a rep as being a bit of a right-on-brother. So it’s just a nickname that stuck really. There’s no deep meaning behind it. The ‘makers’ bit came out of me wanting the band name to sound like Bob ‘n’ the Wailers or Sly and The Family Stone. They’re my favourite bands.

I’m at ease being 32. I’ve nothing to prove so it’s almost back to our debut where we just write tunes for tunes sake. It’s liberating and I think it’s our best work. We’ve tried hard to combine the two things that make Sheffield ace which is the elctro thing from the Cabs, Heaven 17 and the Human League combined with the lyrical thing which people like Jarvis Cocker are so good at.

Bassist Ed Cosens has been with you throughout your career – what does he bring to your music? He does my nut in to be honest! Not really, he’s my best mate from school. He’s like the straight guy in a comedic duo. He gives me licence to be a mad-man. He’s like my musical wife. I give him stick but he loves me anyway.

What’s it like working with Youth as a producer? Amazing! He’s produced a handful of my favourite records and he’s a proper out-there fella. He had me painting. I made this mad tricolour flag with a big prange section. It was like the flag of an as yet unfounded nation of summit. He said it was great but I reckon he knew it was rubbish really.

You sold out The Plug in Sheffield while still an unsigned act, how did you do it and what advice would you give to new bands today? Just from having a vibe online I guess. This was in the days before record labels knew how to hype a band online out of nothing. It was real and came from the tradition of me and the Arctic Monkeys and others just giving our music away initially so people turned up knowing the songs. Having collaborated with several Sheffield-based musicians in your early days, how would you describe the music scene up in the North? It’s amazing. It’s so divorced from london culturally as to almost be another country. Then, once a decade they remember we are dead cool and we get five minutes in their sunlight before hairdressers like Grimshaw take over again. But yeah the North is a vibrant hotbed of talent and always will be. Your new record promises a change in sound, can you tell us more? I think it’s a bit of a continuation of the last album really. We’ve hit a point where we have this cult following,

You’ve announced that in support of ThirtyTwo you’ll be playing free gigs for fans in the comfort of their own homes. How did this come about and how are yo choosing where to play? I’m on it right now. I’ve been everywhere – had smashed windows, riot vans, a dog named after me, a car crash and even a wedding proposal. It’s amazing. The word of mouth thing is brilliant and it’s my way of connecting with the fans. It’s as if to say to the fans, this is real music about your lives, because I’m one of you. Look im in your living room! Crucually though it’s a laugh and if you cant have a laugh doing this then I think you’re in the wrong line of work. Three albums into your career (The State Of Things, A French Kiss In The Chaos and @Reverend_ Makers), what’s next for you? Well, Thirty Two is out and the gigs are all selling out so who knows. World domination beckons. Serisouly though I’m excited for folks to hear the new stuff. It’s a myth peoples first albums are their best. Not always. This is our best record.

What’s it like having your wife (Laura Manuel) in the band? Amazing. It irks me we’re known as a LAD band. Laura is a massive part of the bands sound and plays three instruments and sings. She’s a superstar . Having initially set out as a poet after gaining a first in History and Politics at university, was it a great leap into music or a comfortable transition? I always had my eye on doing this to be honest. My third year was a write-off because all I wanted to do was play music. You list your key influences as Bob Marley, John Cooper Clarke and Oasis, it seems an eclectic trio, but is there a common thread that links them to you? Yeah. It’s music or poetry about real life. Cooper Clarke’s all rehabilitated and trendy now but for years he couldn’t get arrested. All three are in some way seen as passe. Not considered by serious music journalists who sneer at the folk who like them. Certainly Bob and Oasis. And that’s the point. It’s not for them. It’s for the people. I’ve been in 32 countries and every one loves Bob . There’s a reason for that that eludes the critics who just associate it with smoking weed and hippies. What does the future hold for Reverend and the Makers? Onwards and Upwards. We keep on going from strength to strength on our own terms so I feel really positive about the future. and we are enjoying it which wasn’t always the case so yeah, good vibes.

In August 2013, she recreated Fleetwood Mac’s Don’t Stop for a John Lewis advert and reached 61 in the music charts. Lily Allen Hard Out There After spending some time out of the musical spotlight, Lily Allen is back. The singer, known for chart topping successes Smile, Not Fair and 22, has released one single, Hard Out Here, from her forthcoming album. The song talks about body image and women letting themselves go. Classed as controversial, records are selling so she’s clearly doing something right! Foster The People Supermodel This quirky band from Los Angeles already have one successful album, Torches, with its most popular song being Pumped Up Kicks. The fi rst single from the new album Coming of Age was released on 14th January. Lead singer Mark Foster told Rolling Stone, “In the fi rst record I was looking at my vision for the project through a piece of opaque glass”. The next album will be “a clearer picture of what I’ve had in my head when it comes to that vision.” The new album is due for release on 18th March.

Iggy Azalea The New Classic The album The New Classic was supposed to be released in October 2013 but put on hold until March this year. The Australian born singer has had three chart hits including Work, Bounce and Change Your Life, which featured rapper T.I. Keep an ear out for this new album! Shakira Shakira is well known for her dance moves, good looks and sensual voice. She recently partnered up with popular singing sensation Rihanna on her latest single Can’t Remember to Forget You. Shakira’s previous collaborations include the likes of Beyonce and the new album will be released 25th March. Example 31 year old rapper and singer Example is known for songs such as Kickstarts, Won’t Go Quietly and Watch The Sun Come Up. The new album reportedly lacks his trademark rapping. The second single, Kids Again, will be released 16th March.

Competition for places at the top universities is now so fierce that interviews now feature seemingly stupid questions for candidates with their chances of getting a place depending on the scope and imagination of their answer. Some of those asked at Oxbridge interviews include:

Everyone’s heard the saying ‘No question is a stupid question’ – it’s a staple of any meeting after all. But you all know that sometimes, just sometimes, people really do ask the most stupid and inane questions. Mayhem! takes a closer look...

“How high up a mountain can I go having only eaten a Mars bar?” “Think of a painting of a tree. Is the tree real?” “What problems do fish face underwater?” “Don’t you think Hamlet is a bit long?”

Tourist boards the length and breadth of the country have had to put up with a few corkers over the years. Suitably intrigued, a leading newspaper asked for some examples of the most inane queries put to them. Among the gems they got were: “Why on earth did they build Windsor Castle on the flight path to Heathrow?” “Is Wales closed during the Winter?” “Which bus do I get from the Orkney Islands to the Shetland Islands?” Topping even those off was the one asked by a visitor to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, the famous summer residence of Queen Victoria and the place where she died: “Is this really where Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne live?” 38 MayheM! | SPRING 2014

Yep, people’s academic lives and, quite probably, their professional futures can be mapped out depending on how well they answer those questions. And yet...maybe there really is no such thing as a stupid question. A leading CEO tells of a colleague who, when attending only his second board meeting grew weary of all the acronyms his colleagues were using throughout. Eventually, and, understandably, fearing a little ridicule, he asked them: “This might be a stupid question, but do you have a sheet of paper that says what all of these acronyms mean?” After a brief period of silence, the board member sat next to him, one of the main culprits, said: “that’s a great idea. I still don’t know what half of them mean.” He’d been on the board of that company for 11 years!

We’re all guilty of wanting to lose a few pounds from time to time, but some people are willing to go to extreme lengths to shed those unsightly love-handles. Mayhem! explores some of the worst fad diets out there… wrItten by Mia haBens

CAbbAGe SOUP DieT This diet involves living off homemade cabbage soup – that’s it. Long-term this can result in nutritional deficiencies and, in most cases, users fi nd it a struggle to manage on the cabbage soup and start to dread mealtimes. You’ll also smell like a compost heap so any of the positive effects of losing weight are instantly negated.

MAPle SYRUP DieT ZONe DieT Well Beyoncé did it, so it must be good, right? It’s based on the Medal Bal natural tree syrup – made from the sap of the maple tree. The idea is that it cleanses your body of toxins, when mixed with lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper and the user is supposed to drink half a pint up to nine times per day – this results in an intake of way below 600 calories. Diets under 600 calories per day can be dangerous to health, and this one contains pretty much no protein, fibre, vitamins or minerals!

WARRiOR DieT Also known as the Hunter or Caveman diet, it comes in several variations but in general is based on eating one main meal per day between the hours of 5–7 pm when the hunters are thought to have come back with the goods. The remainder of the day involves grazing on foods such as nuts and dried fruits. Remember eating breakfast and regular meals is key to losing weight and maintaining weight loss long-term. Even nuts and dried fruits, though high in nutrients, are also high in calories and can add up.

If you want complexity then this is the one for you! The zone has no room for flexibility and is based around meals being 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30% fat. The time and inclination required to work out the food groups and meals is probably more complicated than making small changes to intake that will result in long-term healthy weight loss.

blOOD GROUP DieT The inventor of this diet believed that blood type influenced how each different nutrient is broken down in the body. • Blood Group A – Vegetarian based diet with no dairy products • Blood group B – Varied intake • Blood group AB – Combination of diets for A and B – so on one hand varied intake and the other a vegetarian diet? • Blood group O – the most common blood group – high meat, no dairy or wheat/grains – sound familiar: think Atkins The problem is that cutting out foods for certain blood groups can lead to problems e.g. decreasing dairy foods in the diet can mean a risk of a calcium deficiency if followed for long periods. conclusion – get oﬀ of your lazy behind and get down the gym… it’s not rocket science!

TWiTChiNG TO GO Sadly not the more sedate pastime of birdwatching, more’s the pity for those who frequently suffer from an attack of wobbles in the eyelid. But what causes the twitch? Rubbing, blinking or a good scratch won’t solve it no matter how hard you try! Science has the answer here: alcohol, caffeine, stress and tiredness are all culprits in disruption to the optic nerve. These rude interruptions as it goes about its work are what causes you to look slightly manic as you try so desperately to get things back on track. By taking the simple step of reducing your intake of the amber nectar or its morning equivalent, getting enough sleep and cutting down on stressful activity you can start to look normal again, and people might even sit next to you on the bus or train once more. 42 MayheM! | SPRING 2014

hORSePlAY If you’re still not sleeping well at night, an errant horse could be to blame. His name’s Charley and he gives his name to those often quick but painful spasms that occur around the calf area, often while you’re away in the land of Nod. Charley-horses, as they’re known, are a mystery to medics, and the root cause is open to speculation. Some believe they could be a sort of delayed response to strained muscles, or on a more scientific level an imbalance of electrolytes in the body. Either way they’re rather painful! But the remedy is easy enough and who doesn’t want to treat themselves to a he-man or woman moment as they flex their legs? Still, naughty Charley!

NeeDleS AND PiNS Sticking around a while longer in a similar area, we come now to pins and needles. Yes, it was a chart hit for the Searchers at one point, but nobody knows if Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono wrote it after a particularly crippling bout. The uncomfortable sensation is simply caused by compromised blood supply, typically to an arm or leg, and is properly known as paraesthesia. The tingle you feel as you shift back into a more comfortable position is the relevant nerves getting back into the groove of sending the right messages to your brain! Yes, it is ruddy painful, but grin and bear it – your noggin just needs time to adjust.

mayhem! Meets… For someone who has just landed on the planet, describe who you are what you do... I’m a British Musician that raps and makes exciting and feel good music. I perform at a high level with a DJ and/or a live band and co-own an independent record label called Disturbing London and a clothing line with the same name. You’ve spoken about writing music as an art that can’t be rushed. What is your writing process and how long does it take for you to develop a new track? It all depends really, sometimes I hear a beat and an idea comes to me instantly. Other times I don’t even need to hear music or be in the studio. The inspiration can come from an observation or a thought and might even just be a line or a few sentences that could take weeks to eventually complete. I find those are usually the songs that are a little more emotional. Rapper turned artist. What’s the difference? To me an artist is someone that can make music across all genres and can actually make a comprehensive song. When I first started rapping I wasn’t able to do those things. Sharing your time here and abroad, what influence does the mix of culture have on your music? It just makes me more open I suppose. I’m more aware of the different types of music and the popularity and impact of my songs and how well they do in different parts of the world. It’s made me more experimental with the sound and style of my music and even the subject matter. I can make references that people in other parts of the world can relate to and so it feels like I can talk to a bigger audience. I’ve discovered so many amazing artists and producers that I wouldn’t have otherwise and have been able to get inspiration and work with a few.

You’ve mentioned while recording in the States that people are too complimentary and positive, and you much prefer blunt honesty in critique of your work… do you think this is evident in the musical output of America in comparison to here? Not at all. I think you can always hear the quality in an American song. Whether it’s Bone Thugs and Harmony or Miley Cyrus and maybe in some way all that positivity wills it to happen. For me however, I just feel that I’m at a stage musically where I need people to be real. I’m still learning and constantly trying to refine my craft so I need people around me who can tell me how I can make things better and not that everything is perfect and amazing. You’ve been referred to alongside the likes of Adele and Chris Martin from Coldplay, but who would you choose? I’m a huge fan of Chris and Coldplay. I like the consistency of their music, the energy in the performance, the back catalogue of hits and the cool collaborations he’s been involved with. “I’m like the reverse of Clark Kent” is how you once described yourself. If you could be a superhero, what would your powers be? Invisibility and the ability to fly. There are times I would just love to go and do something regular out in public in peace and sometimes it’s not easy. That’s where invisibility would kick in. And flying because it’s just cool. What is it about London that you Love so much? I love the diversity. The different races and cultures. I love the fact that you can get everything in London and that there’s opportunity. Anything and everything can happen for you in the big smoke. Voted best dressed man by GQ in 2012. So, what happened last year? Someone else won it hahaha.

How influential have your family been in your success? Very. They have kept me grounded and helped me maintain a sense of reality and normality in the weird and wonderful very fast paced world. What are you listening to at the moment, and who did you listen to growing up? I really like Drake, Solange Knowles, Dom Kennedy, Laura Mvula, Banks, and Kaytranada at the moment. Growing up I listened to Dizzee Rascal, so solid Crew, Eminem, Ja Rule, DMX. All of that good stuff. Back in 2011, you saw yourself as voice of the generation. Do you still? I’m constantly striving to be with my actions as well as my words. I want to make a great contribution to the culture as someone of this generation and I want to inspire people and instil hope that you can achieve whatever you set out to, as long as you have faith, luck and are willing to work hard and smart for it. Once an obsessive tweeter, how important is social media for you right now? I think it’s a great way to keep fans and people who are interested in me up to date on what I’m doing, where I am and what I’m thinking. It’s also great way to share and promote my music, videos, clothing; touring in a more personal and direct way, plus it let’s me know who my fans are and what they think and that’s very important to me As a well educated man, if the whole music things gets boring, what would you like to do instead? It will never get boring but I would love to do anything that challenges me creatively. I have figured out that’s what gets me excited – music, fashion, film, television (acting and writing) anything that is artistic and creative and will allow me to continue to allow me to express myself in the way I know best. mayhem! Meets… Fashion is clearly important to you… but how much of your style comes from within as opposed to stylists and designers? Honestly, most of it. I had quite a clear idea of how I wanted to come across. Stylists and designers help of course because they have access to things that you don’t necessarily and they can show you things patterns, prints, different fits, trends, new designers etc. But I know what I like and what works for me and that’s all from within. Gaining awesome exposure to the movie elite, opening the 2014 Baftas, is the movie industry something you’d like to become more involved in, and in what capacity? It was a huge honour to open the Baftas and defi nitely one of my proudest achievements to date. I’ve always been interested in the movie industry and would love to play roles at some stage that challenge me as a person and as an artist. I’d also love to write or be part of a team of writers for something comedic. That would be amazing! The Disc-Overy album features a wide range of collaborators, from Labrinth to Ellie Goulding. How did you decide that you wanted to work with those artists? I liked thier music, it’s as simple as that. I also felt that on those particular songs thier contribution could help me add the final touches to the picture I was trying to create. You then went in a more electronic direction on Demonstration, what inspired that shift in dynamic? There are also many live elements in Demonstration too. Pianos, strings, electric guitars, drum fills. I wanted to make Demonstration feel more musical and mature. I wanted the listener to feel like they could be listening to an artist of any genre. 46 MayheM! | SPRING 2014

How did you discover your tour support act, Big Sean? I’ve been a massive fan of his for a while now. I have a lot of respect for him and his music. While touring in America I got to know him well and I like his energy and ambition. He’s one of my favourite rappers from the states. You’ll be appearing on a Ministry Of Sound compilation cut, Tsunami (Jump) later in the year. Has the club scene always played an important part in your musical development?

Defi nitely! It’s where it all started and where you can always go to get that real nod and seal of approval from the fans. If it works in the club and makes people feel good then you’re on to something. How did the collaboration with DVBBS and Borgeous come about, and how would you describe them to those who perhaps haven’t heard them before? The label got in touch and said they were looking for a rap vocal for the track and had me in mind and I was up for it. Their sound is dark, urban and heavy. You’re involved with your own record label, Disturbing London London, have you signed anyone we should expect to hear more from? Yes we signed an amazing group called ‘A ll About She’ who had a top 20 hit with Higher last year they are set to drop an ep and a few more singles this year. We also have Sasha Keable who is featured on Voices on the Disclosure album. She’s has just been on tour with the boys and is about to go on tour with Katy B I’m really excited about what she has to offer this year. With Nigerian parentage, would you ever be tempted to experiment with Afrobeat and other ‘native’ styles on future records? Absolutely I love it, it’s one of the most infectious styles of music out at the minute. We also have an artist called Wiz Kid from Nigeria who is about to sign a massive deal over here and that is a style of music he does really well which I been really inspired by. Whether it’s a project or a few songs there will definitely be signs of it in my music at some point.

Other than Jeremy Kyle telling people to ‘put something on the end of it’ on a daily basis, it’s pretty unlikely that STDs are something you hear much about or, heaven forbid, talk about with your friends. In honour of STD Awareness Month here’s our lowdown on why and how to get checked!

The STATS Anyone can be affected by an STD but young people are the most at risk, with 16–24 year olds accounting for up to 63% of new cases of chlamydia. To make things worse, most people with chlamydia don’t have any symptoms and left untreated it can lead to infertility.

As the only contraception that protects against STDs, condoms are the must have accessory when it comes to safe sex. Not only that, they are 98% effective against pregnancy too. Sure, they might cause a slight, erm, delay in proceedings but it’s better to be safe than sorry and you can pick them up for free at sexual health clinics and doctors surgeries too.

GeT TeSTeD So going to the clinic might seem like the scariest thing in the world, right? Wrong. Answering sexrelated questions and having a quick test is not half as terrifying as worrying whether you’re in the clear or not for the rest of your life. Worse still, the longer you wait the more chance you’ll have of infecting a new partner if you do have something.

If a test reveals you do have an STD it may seem like the end of the world, but it really isn’t. Everything is treatable, including HIV, and with professionals to help you, you’re defi nitely not alone.

Think of St Patrick’s Day and what comes to mind? Most likely copious amounts of Guinness and a drinking session that threatens to leave you in a worse state than Father Jack Hackett after a night on the “drink!” But there’s also something altogether better for your health brewed on the Emerald Isle, so come into the Mayhem! kitchen while we knock you up some soda bread to ease that aching head. Your eyes, be they Irish or not, just might be smiling on this one!

WheN iRiSh TUMS ARe hUNGRY AMeRiCAN bReD Soda bread gets its name from the fact that instead of the more common yeast, baking soda is used as a leavening agent in the baking process. The fi rst to tuck into it were the vast waves of European immigrants (including Irish men and women) to the Americas from the beginning of the 17th century, though it took the publishing of American Cookery (1796) by Amelia Simmonds to popularise it across the wider USA. A mere few years later, in 1824, Mary Randolph’s The Virginia Housewife got in on the act, trumpeting a recipe for “soda cake” and the wider world was able to enjoy it at last, once bicarbonate of soda became available for import across Europe. 54 MayheM! | SPRING 2014

Traditionally in Ireland the tasty treat is made using cake or pastry flour (which actually contains less gluten than standard bread flour) in a remarkably minimalist process. Most seasoned bakers recommend not kneading dough and keeping the mixing of ingredients to a minimum.

There’s also a Society for the Preservation of Irish Soda Bread (sodabread.info). It’s probably the tastiest facet of the Irish trip to the States but it was a productive one, clearly.
